Review:
This CD was recorded live at the Tassenberg Stalteater at the Klein Karoo
Nasionale Kunstefees, Oudsthoorn earlier this year (The first CD in this
series was recorded at last year's festival). If you were there at the gigs
to see Valiant Swart, Jack Hammer (featuring Piet Botha & Jonathan Martin),
Not My Dog, Beeskraal, Akkedis, Spinnekop, Delta Blue, Frosted Orange and
Mikanic rock the KKNK then this CD will be a great souvenir. If you weren't
(and I know I wasn't), then this is a perfect reminder of what we missed.
If you've always wanted to have at least one concertina-driven traditional
boeremusiek song in your collection, but you know you are just too "cool"
to buy a Nico Carstens, Klipwerf Orkes or Worsie Visser CD, then your
worries are now over. In between the hardcore rap-metal of Not My Dog (they
do a brilliant version of Led Zep's 'Immigrant Song' on their own 'Disco
Very' CD), the delta blues of Delta Blue, the raw guitar rock of Valiant
Swart, Spinnekop and Akkedis and the intelligent virtuosity of Frosted
Orange and Mikanic appears Beeskraal with 'Strate van Pretoria' (sounding
vaguely like the J Geils Band's 80s hit 'Centrefold'), 'Noord-Transvaal'
and 'Zol'. I have never heard a concertina (or a banjo) rock like this
before and I'm sure there can't be many boeremusiek songs about smoking
'Zol' (Marijuana)!
This CD was launched on Friday and Saturday night (17th & 18th August) at the
High Street Theatre in Durbanville, and by all accounts a great time was
had by all.
This was the fourteenth CD release by Trippy Grape Records, and further information can be
