Here are some of the nominations that I have got in so far.
CLEAR - LESLEY RAE DOWLING A striking picture, the steel grey colouring making it particularly noteworthy, but is it just the scan, or has Lesley Rae lost her nose? | CONSPIRARE - LESLEY RAE DOWLING Someone's been listening to Alan Parsons Project's "Eye in the Sky". Another classy classic from a classic classy. |
HIGH ON THE BLUES - VARIOUS ARTISTS Brings new meaning to the phrase "Blues Guitar". |
TRIP OF AFRICA - JORGE CARLOS Son of a Beach. |
ONE DAY SOON - KARMA Not too sure about the avocado green colouring, but any picture of Karma is worth looking at. |
TASSENBERG ALLSTARS - VARIOUS ARTISTS Willie Nelson, Van Morrison and Bryan Adams all on one album!! Surely Not. |
BURN - VENESSA NOLAN Remember the ANC logo in the First National Bank tree? Look carefully, Venessa's fringe spells "NP" undoubtedly harking back to the Old South African Government. Sultry yet sumbliminal. |
NOWHERE LAND - AGE OF INNOCENCE This missed my list because the album is not in my collection. Brings new meaning to the phrase cover art. Sucked from the brain of Mark Raats at Pixstar Digital, this image was made up without the use of photos. In a word awesome. |
JUST ANOTHER BAND - OFF THE EDGE Bubbling under my list is another great image from Mark Raats (see 'Nowhere Land' above). It just missed the cut as it reminded me too much of a building at my old school. |
WIE IS BERNOLDUS NIEMAND? - BERNOLDUS NIEMAND (A.K.A. James Phillips) A sublimely cool dude with the purple shades. Prince must be envious. |
VOËLVRY - VARIOUS Nero played the violin while Rome burnt, this boeretannie leapt for joy while Joey's (?) burns. A symbol of hyper conservatism in a pose of total abandonment. Makes you want to jump for joy just looking at it. |
FIGHT IT WITH YOUR MIND - THE ASYLUM KIDS If you translate those soundwaves that are pulsing through the x-rayed brain, you actually get Bles Bridges singing nursery rhymes...and you thought the Kids were punks. |
AFRICAN DAY - HAWK The Band silhouetted against a brilliant sunset. No prizes for guessing which one's Dave Ornellas. |
ANCIENT DUST - EDI NIEDERLANDER The cosmos with a strip of African print at the top. African, but out of this world. |
IT'S ALRIGHT - 004s 4 Ou's in a 4 and way ahead of James Bond. What can one say about this cover other than It's Alright? |
TEN LIGHT CLAPS AND A SCREAM - OTIS WAYGOOD BLUES BAND Not a album cover that you'd want to bring home to meet your mum. |
SILVER TREES - ABSTRACT TRUTH Psychedelia without the colours. This bizarre silver cover is intriguing and mesmerising. Check out http://www.new.co.za/~currin/silver_trees.html for more details behind the photograph. |
A SHABBY LITTLE HUT - THE BATS The Bats trying to look like the Fab Four outside a...well it's a Shabby Little Hut. |
INTO THE NIGHT WE SLIDE - RADIO RATS A bit of a rats nest of a cover but is effective. Looks like one of the rats has been nibbling the corners of the one that's scanned here. |
I WANT YOUR SEX - CASEY B The dusty pink colouring in the background livens up an otherwise dull cover. (Not a serious choice of cover, but I do agree she is kinda cute.) |
SPRINGBOK HIT PARADE The original Springbok Nude Girl adorned this series of cheap covers of contemporary hits, but these cover form part of SA's musical heritage. Hands up all those who never bought one. |
Also mentioned are 'Turn On' by Hennie Bekker and 'Live at Jamesons' by the Cherry Faced Lurchers. If anyone can help with covers scans, please e:mail them to me at Thesamsons@aol.com. |
