SPLASHY FEN 2001
Splashy Fen, dubbed by regular punters as the "gentler music festival at a special place on the planet", will celebrate its 12th year when musicians and campers gather once again in Underberg at the foothills of the Drakensberg (now a World Heritage site) from April 26 to 29 to enjoy an awesome selection of South African music.
Ensconced on the South African entertainment calendar as one of the premier music festivals, Splashy Fen also has become renowned for being the largest camping event in the country. The landscape virtually changes over night from grazing pastures with cows to a vibey array of people and brightly coloured tents set against an exquisite backdrop of the southern Drakensberg.
Inspired by the legendary Glastonbury Festival in England, Splashy's original focus was on folk music. Over the years, the focus moved to include more rock and world music and some international artists were included in the line-up. This year, the organisers have made a conscious decision to focus on South African bands, and aims to present "the best of South African music" which will include a selection of rock, world music and folk bands.
Don't forget your camping gear, warm clothes, sleeping bag and your sense of fun! Leave behind your bottles, pets and worries!

UP THE CREEK 2001
It's that time of the year again, where music lovers get to chill out to the sounds of their favourite South African bands. The event; Savanna 'Up the Creek' Music Festival. The date is 2 - 4 March 2001.
The festival takes place on a farm just outside Swellendam, a two and a half-hour scenic drive from Cape Town. The campground is situated on the banks of the Breede River, with breathtaking surroundings. Tents are usually pitched in a field where music enthusiasts can enjoy the splendour of nature while kicking back, becoming part of a unique South African musical experience.
As usual Savanna 'Up the Creek' provides an incredible wide variety of music that will cater for any and every taste. With the brilliant sounds of Sugardrive, Madame Freak, Firing Squad, Brasse Vannie Kaap, Delta Blue, Moodphase 5, Robin Auld, Frank Opperman, Boomslang, Not My Dog, Blues Broers, Vusi Mahlasela, Swamp Funk Quartet, Virtual Jazz Reality and others, this years' Savanna 'Up the Creek' is set to be a huge success.
Besides for the performing bands, there will be food and craft stalls, workshops for kids, and plenty of entertainment to keep the crowds going.

SIEMENS FREEDOM FEST
Ten Top SA Bands (and some DJ's) at Siemens Freedom Fest
The Powerzone Live Band's Arena at the Siemens Freedom Fest musical extravaganza on Saturday 24th February will feature 10 of SA's top rock outfits hosted by Barney Simon. Those ten bands are: Springbok Nude Girls, Boo!, Fetish, Wonderboom, The Awakening, Henry Ate, Sugardrive, Brasse Vannie Kaap, Saron Gas, and Watershed. The Freedom Fest is brought to us by ICE Productions and 5FM and will be staged at the Electric Workshop in the Newton Cultural Precinct.
The Dance department for this year's Freedom Fest is particularly strong as top DJ talents from around the world duel head-on with South Africa's best. Dutch superstar DJ Sander Kleinenberg, new sensation Lee Burridge and UK turntable guru Slacker will join a host of SA spinners including Sasha Martinengo, Ian F and Derek The Bandit and a mixture of the country's top pop and rock acts and up-and-comers. This year the organizers decided to go for quality over quantity concentrating on five major arenas, which are bigger than previous years. This allows them to put on a better production in terms of sound and lights.

KEEPING IT REAL - FUDGE
"Go for that deal, keeping it real" is the opening battle cry from Fudge, an explosive new rap-metal trio from the Cape, hoping to fill the void in SA hard rock since Durban's adored Jimmy 12" announced their split. That statement of intent is the chorus off 'The Message', which is the first of six scorching songs on the just-released 'Keeping It Real' EP. The band formed in mid-'99 and only started seriously gigging six months later. Francois Marais (guitar and vocals) and Donovan Tose (bass and backup vocals), who are both 18 and visually impaired, are school-leavers. Jean Marais, the band's amazing 13-year old drummer, is blind (since birth) and still attends the Worcester Pioneer School for the Blind & Visually impaired, where the members of Fudge first met and began jamming together.
The band's sound is rooted in the current hard-edged crunching collision of metal, rap and punk of bands like Korn, Deftones, Pantera and Primus. But the hip hop influences of Ice Cube, Body Count and Eminem are ever-present, specially on the ominous closer 'U Are Not What You Are', a song that, as with the opening triple salvo of 'The Message', 'Scorn', and 'Fake', aurally resembles the sound of some dinosaurs stomping on a American Football game. Donovan Tose's bass sound is full and frightening, and with Jean Marais' thunderous drumming, creates a granite-like, Black Sabbath-ish booming rhythm backdrop for Francois Marais' guitar flashes and gruff, angsty vocals.
There is some temporary relief to all of this on the second last track, 'Worry When You're Dead', which is a slow, shimmering '70's ballad married to a Rage-ing '90's chorus. The band write all their own material with Donovan and Francois adding lyrics to the band's musical compositions. They have received a lot of airplay on Barney Simon's Modern Rock Show on 5FM and overall Fudge have evolved into a tight and dynamic band, damn certain to be noticed on the live rock scene over the next few months. PRESENTATION - GHOST
A 4-track demo CD from Malmesbury band "Ghost". This is thundering modern rock that would fit perfectly on the soundtracks to the new 'The Matrix' sequels or maybe the next John Woo movie. {So Malmesbury is not only the home of excellent wines and Weetbix? - ed}. Drummer Morgan O'Kennedy comes from the John Bonham school of drumming and drives this 4-piece band of mature-sounding youngsters along with interesting tempo changes. Stunning riffs, gruff vocals and a good rock sensibility lift this band above the normal and boring so often associated with the genre of angst-rock.
If you like bands such as Godsmack and Rage Against The Machine or just love good, powerful, hardcore modern rock then Ghost is a band to listen out for.

THE OUTLAWS
The story begins in the bustling trad clubs of London, 1960, with Billy Grey, Billy Kuy, Reg Hawkins, Chas Hodges and Bobby Graham, comprising The Stormers. It all started when a demo tape was sent to Joe Meek, (the 'Telstar' man). At that stage Meek felt he was guided by the spirit of Buddy Holly, also experiencing a premonition of Buddy’s death, including the precise date (3 February 1959), and attempted to warn Holly during the final UK tour. At that stage a young singer called Kenny Lord, who sounded uncannily like Buddy Holly, needed a back-up band. The plan had come together. Meek renamed the group The Outlaws. The date was 1961 and they released the twangy rendition of the traditional 'Swing Low, Sweet Chariot'. Joe Meek composed every track and even went as far as setting up a Radio Luxembourg series called "It’s the Outlaws". When it came to live performances, the present combo could not live up to Meek’s studio ability.
Thus in stepped Mick Underwood and Ritchie Blackmore from a renegade group, called the Satellites (part of Lord Sutch’s domain). During the summer of ’63 the Outlaws had the privilege of backing Gene Vincent and Jerry Lee Lewis. As time passed Blackmore’s behavior became more erratic, he would slip into orchestral pits during breaks and would add spurious notes to orchestral scores while the orchestral players would find themselves trapped backstage with all doors mysteriously locked and bolted. What followed was a thirty-minute hell for these classical musicians as they were forced to contend with Blackmore’s thirty-minute orchestral guitar solos. This behavior lost all form of pattern when Blackmore would take joy in releasing stink bombs into the audience and free beef burgers doctored with laxatives. Nevertheless, although Meek lost interest, he had achieved his vision with financial success and with nine singles under the belt, he ended the reign of this renegade group abruptly.
Blackmore went on to super stardom with Deep Purple and Rainbow. Chas Hodges had a short span with Cliff Bennett’s Rebel Rousers and then on to Heads, Hands and Feet with Albert Lee. The rest of the musicians found themselves doing session work for the Kinks, the Herd and Lulu. To date John Peel still ranks Ritchie Blackmore as the author of Heavy Metal and whether the Outlaws sound was enhanced by Joe Meek’s esoteric production technique or not, they are still regarded as the yang of the Shadows, in character and aggression.

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
SHATTERED - FALLING MIRROR
"What's one of your favorite South African rock bands?". The answer is two words, "Falling Mirror". 'Shattered' by Falling Mirror is a Best of CD of great songs, wonderful guitar playing, and wild lyrics.
Falling Mirror formed in Cape Town in 1978, taking their name from Nielen Mirror and Alan Faull, lyricist and vocalist, and guitarist, respectively. Pat Humphries, drums and percussion, left after their first two albums, 'Zen Boulders' (1979) and 'The Storming of the Loft' (1980). The other two albums in Falling Mirror's oeuvre are 'Fantasy Kid' (1981) and 'Johnny Calls the Chemist' (1986).
All of Falling Mirror's songs were recorded, remixed, and produced at Spaced Out Studios by the producer and multi-instrumentalist Tully McCully {Real name: Terence McCullagh - ed}. Any CD with Tully's name on it is well worth buying -- check out his work with Crocodile Harris, McCully Workshop and Lesley Rae Dowling, for example.
First released in 1989 on vinyl and then re-released in 1992 on CD (with bonus tracks), 'Shattered's' songs come from all four of Falling Mirror's albums and two subsequent singles, 'Let's Paint the House Pink' and 'Louise the Astronaut' (aka 'Cosmic Night').
The opening track is 'Neutron Bop', modern rock with a rock 'n' roll twist. Rock reviewers refer to a catchy song like this as "infectious", and it is -- try to shake this one from your head. Other high points: 'Revolver Wolf', 'We Build a Big Fire', 'Johnny Calls the Chemist', 'Making Out With Granny', 'We're All Lost in this Universe', 'Lost Your Way on a Rainy Day', 'Let's Paint the House Pink', and 'The Storming of the Loft'. The CD is eminently listenable, a quality work.
To my rock taste, 'Johnny Calls the Chemist' and 'Making Out with Granny' are two fine songs, period. The first is moody, mysterious, and beautiful; the second has a strong undercurrent of violence running under a veil of humor and is driven along by a pulsing bass.
Unfortunately, 'Shattered' is currently out of print, but Falling Mirror is due to get more recognition and attention when Retro Fresh re-releases their four albums on CD this year, along with a new one, 'Hammerhead Hotel' recorded in 1996. (Check out the three MP3s over at the Falling Mirror website). This Texan is one South African rock fan who eagerly awaits more music by one of his favorite South African bands.
Falling Mirror is a cool band name, too.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
SOULFIRE! - THE FLAMES
It's not too surprising that an international act championed the cause of the Flames, the strange thing was that it was Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys who helped them release 'Flame' on the Beach Boys Brother Records label. The music of the Flames was bluesy and soulful compared to the pop oriented Beach Boys music, but strong and powerful enough to rank alongside works by The Animals and Otis Redding.
My introduction to the Flames was the track 'For Your Precious Love' on the 'Best of SA Pop (vol 2)' compilation and, other than a powerfully sung chorus, did not really grab my attention. However from the first few beats of 'Lost', the opening track, I knew that I was in for a treat. The brass, bass and drums onslaught are reminiscent of the heyday of Motown, Stax and Atlantic soul.
Released in 1968 it shows the influence that the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi had had not only on the Beatles (who had visited him the year before), but on music in general. This is particularly evident in the trippy 'Solitude' which is a sitar laden eastern epic that would have kept a hippy's karma good for a a few joss sticks ('close your eyes, I want to sleep in your mind' - groovy man).
'Useless Illusions' is extremely close to the Moody Blues' 'Nights in White Satin' complete with the excellent bass and organ bits, but just a few notes different. Not quite a cover, but still a excellent blues track. Talking of cover versions, there is a well executed version of the soul classic 'Try a Little Tenderness' with a strong vocal performance set against an easy listening backdrop, but building into a full blown brass-filled, lung straining, get down James Brown blast.
In fact this album highlights everything that made the 60s musically great. Ranging from the great soul sounds described above, through the Doors-esque blues tinged rock and firmly tipping it's hat to the long haired psychedelia of the day, this must rank amongst the greatest SA albums of all time. If you want a momento of the 60s and want a change from the steady diet of Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Byrds et al, then try and lay your hands on this. I can't see it disappointing any ageing hippy.

Intervention Artists - Rock Against Rape Concert
Intervention Arts would like to thank Cool Runnings, Wonderboom, Tuks FM and all who attended the Intervention Artists Rock Against Rape benefit concert on Saturday 3 February for making it a resounding success. With a total crowd of 1096 people (the largest ever for a venue that has hosted South African legends like Koos Kombuis), as well as certain relevant Charities (Inter-Trauma Nexus and People Opposing Women Abuse), and the Commission for Gender Equality all in attendance, Intervention Arts raised awareness and R20 000 in profits for the charities involved. R10 000 each will be handed over to representatives of each charity by Ashton Nyte, managing director of Intervention Arts in Melville on 28 February {Make sure Ashton dresses nicely, hey! - ed}.
Crowds started gathering outside the entrance to Cool Runnings from before 7pm and the venue continued to fill up until much later. Matthew van der Want kicked the proceedings off with songs from his new album {It's called 'Play My Way' - Pedantic ed} and the crowd responded well to the fresh electronic direction of his latest material. By the end of his performance a sizeable crowd was packed into the performance hall to watch super-ska punksters Fuzigish play their brassy bouncy brand of rock to enthusiastic applause and cheering. The crowd, well warmed up by then, were ready for another ultra-dramatic performance by The Awakening.
The lithe PVC-clad figures of Ashton Nyte and his band undulated and swayed in true Gothic fashion on the 2m high stage, much to the audience's delight (and amusement at various comments about the altitude), and belted out the chain of hits that had attracted the full hall of hot and expectant fans. From the first cheer as the band ascended the ladder, to the roar as the first chords of the alternative anthem, 'Dark Romantics' was played, The Awakening, like Fuzigish and Matthew van der Want, did not fail to impress.
Finally, to cap the evening off, Not My Dog, on their home turf, played a farewell gig to their guitarist E-mail, which had the venue rocking well into the early morning. All the artists made very clear what the event was about, expressing in no uncertain terms their attitude to rape and rapists, and putting forward the anti-rape message. A fantastic time was had by all and a great deal of money and awareness was raised. Intervention Arts thanks all involved, at whatever level, for your help and support.

GREETINGS FROM THE US of A!
It’s been a while since I last sent you details on what I’ve been up to, so for those who don’t know me, here goes:
I am a South African, working as a volunteer on 2 radio stations in western Oregon, USA - KRVM (Women In Music) and KWVA (Africa Digest). (US public radio stations don’t pay their dj’s - we do it because we love it.) Since November 98, I have been including as much SA music in my shows as possible. My partner Tim, who is also world music director for KWVA, also includes a lot of SA music. So far, we average close to 2 hours of SA music each week on both stations.
Thanks to some artists and record companies, I have been able to introduce incredible artists like Amampondo, Springbok Nude Girls, Via Afrika, Lesley Rae Dowling, Lungiswa, Qzoo, Fetish, Sipho Gumede, Pops Mohamed, Liesl Graham, Mabi Thobejane and many more, to the listeners in this area. The response has been great.
Major problem - why is it that the CDs by these artists are not getting
into the CD stores here? The cultural boycott is over, folks! There are also many (probably thousands) of public radio stations in America who would love to play SA music, and some, like KLCC, another local station, play it at every opportunity. But their choice is limited, because record companies, or marketing directors, or someone in SA is not sending it to them.
For so many years, I heard the same old refrain about how difficult it is for an artist to break into the US market. The longer I live here and work on US radio, the more I start thinking it’s simply because some people don’t want to really work at it. Yes, it’s competitive, yes, it’s a big market, but America is constantly looking for new music, fresh, innovative sounds that countries like South Africa has in abundance! The market is more open now than it has ever been, and it’s time we started seeing some real marketing plans for our artists. Get those CDs into the stores, get some posters printed up, find an agent here who can market the wonderful music my listeners cannot tire of hearing! Get a distribution contract with one of the major sources that supply to CD stores here: Valley Media, Distribution North America and AEC. I cannot - will not! - believe that it is impossible to do.
It seems really sad to me that many of the individual artists cannot count on the support of the record companies to promote them, but have to do it at their own expense, and try to fumble through, finding contacts and resources - which should be a lot easier for a company that already has those contacts in place. It’s a whole lot easier to do something when you have the resources and "name" of a company, rather than try and do things as an individual.
Record companies in SA who spend more time marketing artists from Europe and America really should start putting their money and efforts into SA artists. I am not the only person on US radio who would love to hear more SA music played here. But, it’s up to all of you to stop making excuses and to get down and do some real hard work in seeing our musicians promoted and encouraged in this country. It’s not going to be an overnight achievement, but there needs to be more of an effort than whatever is taking place now.
It is very possible to break into the American market and with a little
effort, is probably a lot easier than anyone is going to admit. Support local music - it really is world class, and so much better than much of the dreck that is being produced in USA right now!
Oh, I just received a letter from the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Tech., "...the Music Industry Development Initiative Trust (MIDI) was nominated by key industry players to propose a body which will mobilise participants in music production and develop a convincing model of export trade for the SA music industry." I would hope that nobody is going to simply leave it up to the government to make sure SA music is available to America!

ARTISTS AGAINST APARTHEID
I am considering writing up a piece on music which protested
against the apartheid system in some form or the other - both
locally and internationally recorded songs. Obviously, some took
the form of explicit protest (eg. Johnny Clegg's 'Asimbonanga' {covered by Joan Baez, no less - ed}), whilst others registered a more subtle condemnation of the regime (eg. Bright Blue's 'Weeping'). Some represented an organised voice from without the country (eg. Artists United Against Apartheid's 'Sun City' recording), whilst others were individualistic or often lone voices (eg. Gill Scott-Heron and Mzwakhe Mbuli). Then, certain songs only make passing reference to South Africa
(eg. Rage Against the Machine's 'Township Rebellion') and treat
the system as part of a system of global apartheid.
With these comments in mind, might I ask fellow subscribers to
help in at least three ways:
(1) identify any songs which might make reference to apartheid so
that I might add these to my list;
(2) if possible, send me MP3 copies of such songs;
(3) any comments on such songs would also be appreciated, viz.
the context in which they were produced, the lyrical content, etc.
I would also like to obtain a copy of the infamous 'Information Song'
in which certain musos lent their support to the regime.

Your scene over there must be very intact, which can't always be said about things over here {Not quite sure where "here" is? UK, maybe? - ed}.
My question: Are the CDs of SA Bands like Suck, Abstract Truth, Steve Linnegar, etc on the Never Land Label (done by Japanese Record Store "Poor House") legal issues or not? Because they are of pretty bad quality and very expensive.
I personally have a small Label and am looking for interesting 60s/70s bands to release. If you ever had a band, even if you just have some homemade recordings, we would love to hear it. We are small but honest. Especially trying to find "Mr. Steve Linnegar" and members from the band "Museum". Thanks for your help! Rock on!!!

KRUGER DAY POP FESTIVAL 1970
I'm a comic artist currently living in Holland and plan to make a series of comics on my teenage years in SA. In 1970 I attended a 24 hour pop festival in Jo'burg which was held on Kruger's Day. In the night from Friday to Saturday the terrain was invaded by a mob of rightwing youth that molested some of the public. Can anyone here give me some more details about what happened there? Especially interested how the whole thing was set up. Big chance there was a deal with the police that were there the whole time for 'security', as they were all on the wrong side of the terrain (stadium on the Expo) when the s--- came down.

CHEMISTRY
The NME Album of the Year for 2000 was by a US band called The Queens of the Stone Age, and the opening track, and first single off that retro-rocking collection is called 'Feel Good Hit Of The Summer'. That song caught the attention of a number of SA music fans as it includes a chorus comprising a so-called drugs' "Shopping list". That song's chorus goes: "Nicotine, Valium, Vicodin, Marijuana, Ecstasy, Alchohol... c-c-c-c-c-Cocaine".
The reason why this goofy chorus rung so many bells was because it is very similar to the chorus on the song 'Chemist Girl' off the Falling Mirror "concept" album from 1986 called 'Johnny Calls The Chemist". In that song, the chorus is: "Valium, Mogadon, Lexotan, Phenzebul (?), Ativan, Vesperax, Obex and Seconal". So well spotted you all, including Matthew van der Want who emailed a query as well.

A LITTLE LOVE
In 1975 I was very fortunate to be given the opportunity by Tully [McCully] to record a single in the Cape Town studio [Spaced Out Sound]. I was only 20 and was the backing vocal to a guy who they told me was a coloured man in jail for a small time. He was a very good soul singer. I never ever met him. I cannot remember what was on the A-side but I was recorded doing back-up vocals for the flip side called "A Little Love". The single was released and through misfortune, I lost my only copy.
What would be the chances of obtaining a recording of this seven single recorded so long ago. I also sang with Crocodile Harris a song which he wrote entitled "The Way Of Love" and left South Africa for Australia so consequently never got to hear if it was ever released. So many great memories - just seems like yesterday. I would love to give my girls the chance to hear the single which was recorded with such talented people. My girls are now 19 and 27.
What do you reckon my chances are?

GIVE ME THE GOOD NEWS
I am in awe... I have been looking for the song by Crocodile Harris, 'Give Me the Good News'.... AND I JUST FOUND IT ON NAPSTER!! I heard this song for the first time in Brazil, my home country, because it was part of a Brazilian soap opera soundtrack. I knew the name of the band, and the name of the song, but that was about it. I have searched for this song for 18 years. I had given up, I searched for it online, at CD stores both in Brazil and here in the States, even on those IMMENSE books that some CD stores with every artist, every LP ever recorded, and nothing. This song marked my childhood like no other song has. Every once in a while, I would enter the name 'Crocodile Harris' on the search engine at Napster. It finally paid off.
This is very emotional to me, and to be able to find out where the band is from, it's a very touching moment. I apologize if I sound corny, but I am a 28-year-old man, who has just gotten back a little part of his past that was long gone, but never forgotten.
About Brazilian soap operas: I don't know if you guys have soap operas in South Africa, but contrary to the ones here in the States, the Brazilian ones are presented on prime time. There are 3 different time slots, for 3 different soaps, one at 6pm, another at 7:15 and the last one around 8:30. Depending on the popularity, soap operas can reach a total audience of 60-75% of total TV in the country, which makes them a valuable marketing tool. In a country with a population of 160 million people, 60-75% of all TVs is a lot of TVs!
As you can imagine, if a soap opera is successful, so is its soundtrack. Most of the time, the best songs on a soundtrack will become hits, and that's what happened with 'Give Me The Good News'. It was featured on a soap opera called (if I'm not mistaken) "Cocktail" and it was aired in 1983 or 1984 by Globo Television (the 4th largest TV network in the world).
I remember that 'Good News' aired so much that most kids my age, in the town I lived in, loved the song! I had a cassette tape with songs recorded off the radio, and I had the song recorded 3 or 4 times on the same tape. I loved it so much!
If you ever have a chance to talk to Mr. Graham, please tell him his song and poetry reached a small town of 15,000 in the pampas of south Brazil, and I'm sure the rest of the country too.

{'Give Me The Good News' was recorded by Crocodile Harris (real name: Robin Graham, from Somerset West, near Cape Town). It reached #14 on the SA Radio charts in 1982. It is currently almost impossible to find on CD. It was released on the 'Precious Moments volume 1' compilation
CD (Tusk, TIXD 400) in the early 90s, and also on the 'Sharp Cuts Volume 1' CD (Tusk, WOND 103) in 1992, both out of print and very difficult to find, so I guess Napster is the only way to actually hear this song at the moment. Shameful!
Another Crocodile Harris song with a similar theme is 'The World Is An Explosion' available on the 1998 'Cape Town Vibes' compilation CD (Rocking Horse Music, RHWCD3). Highly recommended - ed}
