It also includes 2 studio recordings from 1998 one of which is an earlier, rawer version of 'For Annette' released on the 'Anthology' CD in January 2000.

DAVE MATTHEWS TO STAR OPPOSITE CHARLIZE THERON?

Looks like Dave Matthews might join the growing number of singers who are making a move into the world of acting {Damn, you mean like Jon Bon Jovi - Ed}. The Dave Matthews Band, er, leader, who was cast in last year's 'Where The Red Fern Grows', (a project which unfortunately ran out of funds before it could be completed) may take a role opposite Charlize Theron and Courtney Love in ‘24 Hours’. This would be of some interest to SA audiences as both Charlize and Dave spent their formative years in this country - like I said, "some interest". Dave is probably a crap actor but Charlize is a human Magnum (the ice cream, not the hand-gun*) so we’ll reserve judgement and seats.

'24 Hours' is being co-produced by Glen Ballard, who produced the Dave Matthews Band's forthcoming RCA album, 'Everyday'. That means that not only are musos becoming screen actors but their record producers are simultaneously becoming film producers. So I won't ask who is handling the soundtrack for '24 Hours', assuming Dave gets the part. BIG NAMES TO PERFORM AT EXCLUSIVE ROBBEN ISLAND CONCERT

The Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Robben Island Jazzathon Concert to be held on Saturday February 17, will serve as a poignant platform for two South African musical icons whose lives and musical careers have been undeniably shaped by South Africa's apartheid heresy - Jonathan Butler and Miriam Makeba. They will be joined by Jimmy Dludlu, another of South Africa's biggest musical names. This exclusive two and a half-hour show will take place in the Robben Island prison hall with ticket sales limited to 350 seats. Tickets are available at Computicket, with auditorium seats selling at R300.00 (this includes a ferry ride to the Island.)

CUTT GLAS BREAK OUT

Cutt Glas, South Africa's only all-girl a capella group, is celebrating its tenth year with the release of a brand new album ‘Slegs Glas/Glass Only’. The award-winning group are well known both nationally as well as overseas and are renowned for their witty and popular cabaret shows. They have mastered the art of combining razor sharp witticisms with uniquely arranged South African and international hit songs.

'Slegs Glas/Glass Only' is this hard-working group’s fifth CD, and also marks a departure in that it is the first time they've arranged and recorded material specifically for the recording studio. Top producer Didi Kriel, who produced one of the first Cutt Glas shows ever, worked with the group again, resulting in a sophisticated, slick and polished piece of work.

'Slegs Glas/Glass Only' contains a selection of Cutt Glas' favourite songs, including The Everly Brothers' 'All I Have To Do Is Dream', which was the very first song the group performed. Also included on the set are superb versions of 'Rum & Coca Cola', The Eurythmics’ hit 'There Must Be An Angel' and R.E.M's 'Everybody Hurts'. FULL CIRCLE - TOXIC SHAME (Universal, CDSRBL 280)

Seven self-financed albums down the road and they finally managed to secure a record deal with a major company! All credit must go to Chris Venter of Universal Music for appreciating and acknowledging the songwriting and musical abilities of two very talented individuals. Jon Buckley and Deon du Toit are Toxic Shame and they've been around for a number of years. Like Off the Edge, who are pretty unique and
the best AOR band in this country, Toxic Shame have no equal in the hard rock stakes. There are many South African bands and artists that can hold their heads high when compared to some of their more illustrious and better known overseas contemporaries, and Toxic Shame are right there near the top of the list.

This fifteen track album, which includes an excellent selection
of their best tracks, should please lovers of good, solid balls to the wall AC-DC/ Judas Priest/ Budgie inspired hard rock as well as those who enjoy music of a more commercial, radio friendly nature. The South African music buying public needs to open their eyes and ears a bit and realize that we have some seriously hot talent here. Bands like Toxic Shame and Off the Edge also deserve to be heard on many more radio stations other than 5FM, who are firm supporters of home grown talent. Shame on those radio station managers who won't give these bands a chance because "it's not within their format". They need to unblock their techno/ rap/ dance/ schmaltz encrusted ears and realize that there's a wealth of excellent music out there - the guys just
need the breaks. So what if the music is more rock orientated - not
everybody likes to hear the crap that's been forced down their throats every day!

Well done also to Jon and Deon for having the courage to record this rose amongst the thorns. Don't be too surprised if this album does well overseas.

PLAY MY WAY - MATTHEW VAN DER WANT

‘Play My Way’ is the second solo album from St Matthew and, as he explains on the new, improved "Chilly Mix" of ‘Waterfall’: "It’s been a year since my last confession, life at the whim of a strange obsession". Appropriate and slightly daunting words from the SA singer-songwriter best described as both the Lou and Oliver Reed of SA music. ‘Waterfall’ is just one of the reworked tracks on ‘Play My Way, and was a highlight on ‘Low Ridings’, his second collaborative effort with Chris Letcher from two years ago. Before that there was that (still) impressive debut, ‘Turn On You’, followed by the ‘e.p. Tombi’ EP, the Van der Want/Letcher duo’s first controversial release.

Van der Want/ Letcher have since recorded another album with Lloyd Ross, and Matthew has also been collaborating with Gary Herselman (ex Die Kerels) and some other SA artists on an upcoming Koos Kombuis tribute album. But those two albums will have to wait their turn as ‘Play My Way’ gets first crack at our attention, and pay attention we must as it is Van der Want’s ‘Unforgiven’ album. The reference to Clint Eastwood is Matthew’s and, as with that Eastwood (Oscar-winning!) Western, ‘Play My Way’ was written, produced, recorded, distributed, marketed and, of course, played and sung by him (Matthew that is, not Clint!) and is also released on Matthew’s own Bitchin’ Pitchin’ label.

‘Play My Way’ finds Van der Want staying in his characteristic slow, lyrical song arena but utilizing more electronic devices to flesh out these arrangements and getting quite poppy in the process. First single, ‘One Time’, may be a tad slow initially for radio play but its patiently-developed hook and theme, as with ‘Madmaking’ and ‘Badmouthing’, clearly exposes a subtle songwriting touch. ‘Dying Of Love’ is credited to Trad/v.d.Want/Ferguson so I’m assuming that it was Jennifer Ferguson and not Gus Ferguson, as it is a mournfully elucidated dirge that could have Sinead O’Connor running for (a) cover.

‘Psychotropic’ recalls Julian Cope with its acidic swirls and abrupt pace-changes and ‘Caitlin’ is a mostly instrumental track with shades of late period Human League. ‘Badmouthing’ then makes a speedier reappearance in its ‘Super-surf Mix’ before Gary Herselman joins in on bass and backing vocals for the very strange closer, ‘The Worst Song In The World... Ever!’, with its spoken narrative over a staccato beat.

You ignore Matthew van der Want at your peril, and ultimate loss, as he is definitely one of SA rock’s brighter hopes. He still proudly retains his right to annoy his listeners for no good reason (as he does with that hidden Helium-voiced insert), and should really have thought longer about including that ‘Drugs Uncool’ track (off e.p Tombi) on this album as Koos Kombuis already did this cod-reggae so much better with ‘Babilon Blues’ off ‘Niemandsland and Beyond’. It’s a silly song, out of place, and to quote Bill Hicks: "Rock stars against drugs is like Christians against Christ". But those very minor grouches aside, ‘Play My Way’ has enough strong moments and ideas to confirm that the boy’s got something special. Matthew’s ‘Forgiven’. (7,5) (SS)

No dimension is more diverse and surrealistic, than the era of Psychedelia. But let us turn the clock back to the Rock and Roll culture of the fifties. Short lived as it had been, it would teach the next generation to define the idea of being hip and cool through the element of music.

The rise of the beatnik. In 1959 novelist Ken Kesey stimulated the use of hallucinogenic chemicals while participating in study at Stanford University. Kesey and his throng of followers comprising of hipsters and musicians created and underground market of chemists and powerful doses of LSD had a dramatic effect on the music of the day. America was discovering itself in one way or another and while the intellectuals experimented, a growing discontentment brew within FBI circles. The influence of Aldous Huxley on a young Harvard psychologist Timothy Leary regarding the use of mescaline, had opened more doors of perception to the growing fever that had run amok across the wastelands of the USA.

Historically 1965 could be seen as the birth of the Garage era which ended late 1968 although the archaeological dig could probably be rooted closer to 1964. The centrifugal force was AM radio and the folkies of 1965 was starting to go electric and for what its worth, something was happening out there. Folk rock combinations such as the Charlatans and the Byrds were most likely the first group therapy transformation. In the UK the Wilde Flowers, later to form a blend of Soft Machine, would have a permanent effect on Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd. Although one would like to think that influences were moving across the waters, there was a definite universal energy that had come upon the age of man. This is probably the most profound and significant fact over and above all the magic and tragedy.

Amidst the beads and incense were politically based elements that had a definite message for the generation. Detroit spewed forth a metallic thunder of garage with the likes of politically radical elements such as MC5, Amboy Dukes and The Rationals. This was a far-fetched cry from the Eastern intrigue that had embraced the Californian segment of Haight Ashbury. Detroit city had now been labelled as the official birth of Punk, but psychotic fever was rising up in all four corners of the USA. In the mid-west Soul was an influence on the sounds of the local bands, with the likes of The Cryan Shames, The Human Beinz and The Outsiders. Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys released 'Pet Sounds' in 1966, knocking the wind right out of the sails of The Beatles who were then hard at work on 'Sergeant Pepper'. A strange alchemy was taking place across the waters where Merseybeat in the UK had run its course and a new fuzz R&B came arrogantly forth with sneer and vigour with the likes of Them, The Pretty Things and The Yardbirds. Commonly known as the sound of '66, radio waves were filtered with the power of The Nightcrawlers, The Sonics, The Barbarians and The Chocolate Watch band. Big brother had a solution - send them off to Vietnam and ban local music.

The napalm heat of Vietnam had reached critical height and the FBI were doing everything in their power to shield the boys from the provocative propaganda that was rising up in the states. Of all the 'Nam music that reached the fox holes of Hanoi, it is now an accepted fact that the track 'Lets Live For Today' by the Grassroots, had the most dramatic comfort effect for the veterans. Initially a hit for an Italian band called the Rokes, Sloane and Barri changed the tempo more aptly for the American market. It reached top ten during the bitter sweet summer of love. In one sense the age of Aquarius was upon us and even the collar and tie business men sat cross-legged on the floor to the sound of paisley sitar. September, 1967 The Association released the Addrisi Brothers' version of 'Never My Love', a song thought to have launched a thousand love affairs. Scott McKenzie's 'Flowers in your hair' gave the world a positive theme which decayed radically overnight.

Heroes were found in a day, and lost in an hour. When The Ventures left Seattle, The Wailers were the most famous group. Paul Revere and the Raiders were most likely the biggest group to emerge out the North West. The San Francisco scene gave forth of Moby Grape, Grateful Dead and other candy coated delights, while the Mid West pounded with the sound of The McCoys and Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels. Few bands could match the intriguing splendour and guitar sound of The Electric Prunes with their distorted guitar and feedback. The introduction of Indian sitar into Paisley Pop first rooted by the Yardbirds in 1964 and Ray Davies of The Kinks, later to be popularised by George Harrison of the Beatles on 'Norwegian Wood', took power in the world of pop. Even the honestly straight flew their freak flag. (BJ Thomas - 'Hooked on a feeling', Joe South - 'Games People Play', The Boxtops - 'Cry Like a baby').

The power of James Marshall Hendrix had hypnotised the world. No-one had ever expounded the electric guitar the way Hendrix did. So dominating was his soul power that his back-up band, The Experience headed by Noel Redding, would often have a double feature as Fat Mattress.

Everybody was jumping on the band wagon. The Rolling Stones, thanks to the sitar ability of Brian Jones, came to oneness with 'Paint It Black' and 'Mother's Little Helper' while 'Dandelion' and '2000 Light Years From Home' stretched way beyond the blues repertoire. Acid days had arrived and it seemed as though the whole world was in a yellow submarine. Some of the American genius had been seduced across the waters to the UK, namely a mind-blowing talented band called The Misunderstood. Due to the financial promises of John Peel, the supernatural ability of Glen Campbell and Tony Hill, caught the attention of guitarist Jeff Beck. The band fell to pieces in the UK and split into two sections, Juicy Lucy and High Tide. Even the soul gospel of 'The House of the Rising Sun' was not free of psychedelic curse and in 1969 Frigid Pink released a power version that reached no. 7 on the Billboard charts. Various psychedelic assortments managed to even commercialise their appeal and one could find yourself jiving to the sound of 'Green Tambourine' of the Lemon Pipers or 'Venus' by Shocking Blue.

Described in the UK as Paisley Pop every thing was groovy and probably could be immortalised by the words "Bamboo Butterflies twice their normal size, flying around in my mind." ('Purple Shades' by Reg Presley of The Troggs). Record companies eye-balled Boston as a soft target due to the 250 colleges and universities and a number of commercial and community radio stations exposing grassroots level bands such as Orpheus, Beacon Street Union, Eden's Children, Ultimate Spinach and The Rocking Ramrods. So much so that the Wall Street Journal ran a story called "The selling of a new sound", quickly to be capitalised by the media. Axe welding flower children expelling eastern raga from their acid driven garage, yet combining innocence and melodic simplicity, captured a major space in the time circle. By 1967 the official funeral of the hippie had come to be and although the Monterey Pop Festival signified a new nation, the days were numbered. The aftermath of Woodstock, was a sad disfigured memory of what should have been, and the flower warriors of old were starting to fade (Hendrix, Joplin, Morrison) Only years later in the electronic nineties a new form of Paisley erupted with the sound of Suede and Kula Shaker, but that’s another story.

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

THE INSTRUMENTALS - OFF THE EDGE

Wow, talk about mature rock, beautiful rock, soaring and inspired rock! On 'The Instrumentals', Peter Hanmer's guitar does the singing so no vocalist is needed. At the risk of sounding trite and clichéd, the music goes beyond rock by taking the listener through time and space, yet it is always rock solid playing.

This is a masterful album, absolutely masterful. The guitar leads the other rock instruments through movements. The 13 tracks on the album flow from one to the next without seams, and some tracks are musically linked. The album opens with a gentle intro, moves into some elaborate rock numbers, eases up, then rocks again. Even during a languid number, the music moves. Always, the music conveys many emotions.

This CD demonstrates an electric guitar's usefulness as a symphonic
instrument, and here almost the entire symphony itself, in the rock form. Sound pretentious? I don't mean to be -- it's just that this music, this rock music, has power and majesty while keeping its feet solidly planted in its rock roots.

The liner note says that "all instrumentation" is by Peter Hanmer. That means especially the guitar. Peter plays so effortlessly, the notes fly from the strings as if his guitar is alive and singing.

This CD has passed the teenager test, too -- I played this for some students of mine while they wrote in their journals, and they enjoyed it and asked about it. After class, one student even came up to me to ask where he could buy the CD. So my next One World order will include a copy of 'The Instrumentals'.

About a year ago, I reviewed Off the Edge's great 'On the Run' CD and
suggested something to the effect that I thought some of the finest rock rock was instrumental, if it was made by musicians who had already worked through many of the rock forms. 'The Instrumentals' is the full flowering of that prediction and I'm grateful to Peter for making it come true. 'The Instrumentals' is a mature, wonderful, beautiful, rocking, and singing-guitar piece of work.

CELEBRATION - THE JULIAN LAXTON BAND

While the name Julian Laxton appears on just about every second South African rock album (as guitarist or producer), the Julian Laxton Band were not that prolific. 'Celebration' is one of the few albums produced by this band.

Opening with 'Blue Water' this is a great mixture of rock, funk and disco. From the start two things stand out; Julian's guitar work and the strong falsetto vocals of Eugene Havanga, the latter being reminiscent of Jon Anderson of Yes fame. The guitar work is tight but not clinical, it flows in a determined to be laidback kind of manner.

There is not one duff track on the album, with 5 of the 6 tracks making it onto 'The Julian Laxton Collection' retrospective CD released in 1994, but it's 'Blue Water' and 'Celebrate the Rain' that are the highlights. 'Celebrate the Rain' starts with the sounds affects of a torrential downpour with some thunder in the background, a synth is introduced, and then it's into some heavy tribal beats and chants. This gives way to more of Eugene's vocals and Julian's guitar, but goes a long way to encapsulate the feel of a highveld storm.

The album closes with it's funkiest track - 'Man to Man' which chugs along at a pace, forcing everything in it's way to dance. Clocking in at over 8 minutes this track has enough false endings to make even the most hardened DJ wary of playing this.

'Celebration' is just that, a celebration: of love, life, music and dance. A feel good album, that made disco cool for rock lovers.

Was wondering if there is some kind of South African mega compilation
containing those old hits in the All Time Greats chart. People like eVoid, Helicopters, Via Afrika, John Ireland, Ballyhoo, etc.

Some years ago, two double CD's were released - "Best of South African Hits" or something - unfortunately I never bought these while they were still available. Think the sleeve had a vinyl record printed on it?

Any chance of purchasing something along these lines nowadays? I'm in
London but assuming I can't buy this stuff at Tower, HMV, etc.

Any help would be appreciated.

THE KID HE CAME FROM... WHERE?

Question:
The one question of many that always puzzles me about Freedoms Children's 'Astra' album is the track 'The Kid He Came From Hazareth'. I always thought this was meant to be Nazareth, but on 'Astra' the words are actually sung as "Haz..."

Answer:
Well its actually quite simple. When we first recorded this song, it was called "The Kid That Came From Nazareth". When the album "Astra" was submitted to the SABC (Old Regime) for their playlist, they banned the album because of that track, as it was "Blasphemous". They said that if we changed all references to the word "Nazareth" including the recording, they would unban the album. So it was back to the studio and a re-recording of the lyrics as well as re-doing all the artwork. This was quite standard practice in those days. There you have it.

Watershed - In the Meantime - Great songs, magnificent melodies, they rock live, what more can you ask for? With decent backing they deserve an international market.

Bernard Binns - Physiognomy of the Soul - What a wonderful surprise of a comeback from the ex-Helicopters frontman, this bought back great memories of a mis-spent youth in smokey nightclubs. Contrary to some journos, this is a great album, and to get Bernard to play his first live gig in years in the shop, what a coup!

Jack Hammer - Anthology - Again memories of younger years get this here. No idea whatsoever why this band never got the recognition it deserved. The Stones would've been proud to call these rocking tunes their own.

CAPITOL 604

Some of you may remember Capital Radio 194 from London which started its life off in the sixties. In the late seventies a group of South Africans used (with permission) the style and format of Capital Radio 194 to create Capital Radio 604.

Capital Radio 604 was, by all intensive purposes, a pirate radio station, transmitting on 604 KHz Medium Wave from another country (Transkei) into South Africa.

In those days (1979) private broadcasters were illegal as the government owned SABC had complete control over the airwaves (for obvious censorship reasons).

Many South Africans grew up listening to Capital 604 and what the station brought to the radio landscape at the time, totally revolutionized radio in Southern Africa.
Capital 604 told South Africans the REAL news, and played really great music. They had professional presenters who were genuinely having a good time on air, and it showed.

Unfortunately in 1996, Capital 604 was forced to close down due to the South African governments insistence on not giving them an FM license so that they could compete in the now crystal clear FM Stereo arena. This was an obviously destructive and intentional move on their part, and it did bring a wonderful era of radio to a halt.

A fan web site was setup sometime in 1997 that is a huge archive of Capital jingles, videos, Bill Mitchell dropins, interviews and so on. This web site, now very popular, has sparked the return of Capital 604.

So, in the last week of February, Capital Radio 604 will be back on the air, but on the Internet, reaching a whole new, world wide audience.

The new Capital Radio 604 will derive its playlist from a very popular chart web site, called BeyondRadio. BeyondRadio compiles charts from all over the world, from personal charts to sales charts to airplay charts, and crunches it all down to a number of charts that represent what the worldwide public really wants to hear.

The new Capital Radio 604 will retain its history while moving into the future playing new music. Many ex-presenters will be back to do their old shows or totally new ones.

The first show to air on the new Capital Radio 604, will be SOLID GOLD SUNDAY. This show, one that used to air on the original Capital Radio 604, will be hosted by Dave Simons, one of the station's and show's original presenters.

Some new features that the new Capital Radio 604 will be making use of are, live chat rooms for listeners to chat with the presenters, email request lines, internet telephony for listeners to join in on live competitions without having to make costly land-line phone calls, and an MP3 copy of the show once it is done, so that people who missed it when it was airing live will have a chance to listen to it at their leisure using an MP3 player.

I am planning a trip to S.A. in July, and I want to try and get a few gigs set up before I come. I will just have released my new album, "Dark Heart", and will be shopping for a distribution deal in S.A.

Perhaps I can pick your brain about some clubs or smaller venues where I can perform. I would probably get a percussionist and guitarist there, and bring my bass player with me. I would like to play Jhb, Durban & Cape Town, just for old times sake. It will be so much fun. My music is sooooooooooo different to what I used to do, it will be quite a culture shock. I'm looking for smaller acoustic-type venues, even though I am planning on having a full band, my music is definitely Acoustic Rock. I would rather do smaller venues cause I'm not really a "name" - I mean it's been 10 years since I danced around in grass skirts and bangles with Zia. People forget, which is a good thing sometimes.
