RETRO FRESH
The series is off to a flying start with the éVoid and Via Afrika reissues, both albums have recorded extraordinary sales in the first
week of release with sales in excess of 1000 units each. There is a
tremendous air of excitement in the stores with the éVoid charting on the CD Wherehouse, Rosebank Top 40 sales chart.... 17 years after its first release! The media too have shown remarkable interest in RETRO and I will be ending my three year self imposed silence to do interviews with both radio and press in the coming weeks... the compliments on the remastering and repackaging have been coming in thick and fast and it is both gratifying and encouraging to know that there is such support out there for what is really a labour of love! The tentative release schedule for next year is as follows:
January 22:
Otis Waygood Blues Band (the legendary "black" debut
album)... remastered with three bonus tracks, new artwork,
fantastic rare pics of the band, liner notes by author Rian Malan.
February/March:
Hawk - African Day (with rare 1970 bonus live tracks)
Falling Mirror - Johnny calls the Chemist (with two bonus tracks and possibly a CD enhanced track).
Lesley Rae Dowling - Conspirare... a new 18 track career retrospective replacing the "Best of..."
The Dynamics.. a career retrospective featuring all three classic band lineups.
Freedoms Children - Astra ... a new remastered version with possible live tracks, rare pics, etc.

SOUND SOLUTIONS
SOUND SOLUTIONS is a new, Cape Town-based music resource that offers two main areas of expertise and assistance:
1) Music Searches - Assists in recommending and finding relevant music
soundtracks for television, cinema and radio commercials and
productions.
2) Music Licensing - Assists in obtaining the publishing and recording
rights for music to be used as soundtracks for commercials and other
productions.
Where necessary, international tracks are suggested, located or
licensed. However SOUND SOLUTIONS is striving to recommend more South
African songs for these commercials. This is seen as a way of bringing
extra funds back into the SA music industry and artists’ pockets, as
well as giving SA artists the opportunity of gaining the invaluable
exposure that a song on a TV or cinema advert can bring.
You have seen the Santam ‘Yellow Umbrella’ commercial, which utilizes
the Blk Sonshine song ‘Born In A Taxi’. This track was suggested by
Sound Solutions when the rights to the desired Bob Marley song were
denied to the producers of the commerciaL. Blk Sonshine were amply
reimbursed for licensing their track, and copies of the ‘Blk Sonshine’
CD now carry a sticker announcing "As heard in the Santam TV Ad...".

ABELARDE AWARDS
At this years Abelarde Awards held on Friday the 1st of December, against very stiff competition, Sharkbrother walked away with six awards. The most prestigious of these being the Abelarde Band of 2000. This is one more than last year with the addition of the best groupie award, where our faithful fans, Joanne, Lydia and Bromwyn took the honours. The full list of awards recieved is:

Sharkbrother would like to thank everyone who has made a contribution to making this year the success it was, the high point being the release of our second album 'Taj Mahala' to great critical acclaim. The biggest thank you must go to Taz, the owner of the Abelarde Sanction, whose commitment to providing a live music venue, where bands such as the ones honoured on Friday night, can play. It is also a venue where, due to the cult following among the bands who have played there, can meet and exchange ideas. It was also very noticeable this year that the overall quality of bands playing the Abelarde has got much better, and this can only be taken as a gauge of the state of the industry as a whole.

5.USA FOR SA

READY AND WILLING - LITTLE SISTER (1990)
After I bought Little Sister's 'While No One Was Looking', their greatest hits, I wanted their other CDs. A natural place to start was the first Little Sister release, 'Ready and Willing'.
The personnel on this disc are:
Jenni and Debbi Lonmon (lead vocals and voice harmonica, bass and vocals, respectively)
Sandy Robbie (a tuff-looking and tough-playing guitarist -- this guy fills up the rock tracks with great chops)
Marc Bentell (keyboards and vocals)
Johnny Burnett (drums and percussion)
'Ready and Willing' was produced by Ron (Bones) Brettell, Bernie Millar, and Sandy Robbie.
To guess by the inner sleeve photo, Marc looks like a fun hambone, while Johnny Burnett looks like he has a wry outlook on life. And the Lonmon Sisters... I suspect they are a nice combination of tough and sensitive.
Little Sister's 'Ready and Willing' has: rockers, smooth ballads, a cool anthem, a serious song that was a hit, and an extended cut of the opening track, 'Little Sister' (aptly sub-titled the 'Crank Up the Guitar 12" Mix'). Not only is this CD to my taste, but my daughter spontaneously sings along to many of the tracks. To appeal to such a range is no little feat but rather is a testimony to a fine debut rock album.
I enjoy writing about songs as I listen to the album. If you know the album well I hope this is meaningful. If you don't, I hope it makes you curious about the album. I also hope that my explications are not vivisections from which the patient does not survive. Anyway here's my song-by-song, play-by-play, of 'Ready and Willing', a fine and rockin' album:
'Little Sister' -- Start the entertainment with a sterling rocker, this
isn't chick rock, it's rock, a song that it demands your attention. This one and 'A.C.T.I.O.N' are my daughter's favorite cuts on this CD.
'Young Hearts' -- Slow the pace down a notch to a pretty melody. Here it seems like the Lonmon sisters decided to show their range, going from rocker to ballad in the first two tracks on this disc.
'Ready & Willing' -- They rock again, just in case we were wondering they were going to wimp out on us after the strong open. Cool bassy break, too.
'No Man Shall Fall' -- One of my favorites on the disc. This one builds to a plaintive, sincere choir-like refrain. This is the one song written by outside songwriters.
'You Got My Heart' -- A bouncy poppy number with some nice guitar work.
While most of the songs on this CD are written by the band and the producers (the names Lonmon, Millar, Brettell, and Robbie dominate), this one was co-written with Robbie by some ou named Benjy Mudie....
'A.C.T.I.O.N.' -- A show opener? A cool song that somehow makes me think of partying at the beach even though it does not mention the coast. It only has that spirit. You, too, can sing along to the chorus the first time around. Come on everybody: "The boys want girls, but the girls want men!"
'Lovesick' -- Sandy Robbie's opening guitar right away lets us know this is a tough and aggressive tune. If doubts existed, Jenni lets the guy she's singing to know that she's had enough, she means it, "I'm just sick of you!"
'Dear Abbie (One Night of Passion)' This number avoids being depressing, emerging as poignant instead. This was also the hit from this album, and deservedly so. Jenni has a touching, convincing voice.
I consciously do not compare SA artists with artists from around the world because I view performers individually; even if working within a certain style, sincere artists are their own man or woman. But I tell you what, the Lonmon ladies can take a song that is potentially depressing and make it, as said, poignant -- unlike Janis Ian, who is so often merely a drag. Right now I'm glad I'm listening to 'Dear Abbie' instead of 'At Seventeen'. (Don't tell Janis I said that, she is such a vulnerable artiste that it would hurt her feelings.)
'Watch My Lips' -- An assertive rock song. Tell him how it is, Sisters. Like 'Lovesick' this is a get-out-of-my-life-song. Nice mix of tough song with sweet female background vocals. This song and the next one both rock hard for the big finish before the 'Little Sister' remix.
'Daddy Was a Rocker' -- The title is reminiscent of classic rock 'n' roll, but this has a modern heavy guitar 'n' pounding drums sensibility, told from the life-hardened point of view of a girl raised on the road because her father wanted to be a rock 'n' roll star.
'Little Sister (Crank Up the Guitar 12" Mix)' -- Added effects, as one might expect with an extra minute-and-a-half running length, and, also as expected and welcomed, a cranked-up guitar. So we end where we began, but with more at the end.
You know, the musicianship on this CD is great, and the production is nice and clear -- but one thing that strikes me about the Lonmon sisters is the sincerity they sing with. When rocking, loving, or breaking up, I believe them -- especially Jenni, the lead vocalist.
Gosh, and at only R60 at One World I feel like I got a deal, even with
overseas shipping.
One of the things I like about South African music is that there is a
welcome lack of throwaway filler tracks on SA CDs. This album is typical in that each track is a welcome song. 'Ready and Willing' does have the energy and advantage of being a first album, so I'll see how the other discs match up as my Little Sister buying program continues.
The Sisters are back in the studio and making a new album. This is a band whose catalogue I'll certainly end up with, from the first release to the next one.

6.CLASSIC ROCK

MIRIAM MAKEBA
Recorded in 1960, Miriam Makeba's debut has all the innocence of the 1940's & early 1950's popular music, yet the voice is wonderfully mature. A protegé of Harry Belafonte, Makeba (one time wife of Hugh Masakela) was one of South Africa's most sucessful singers in the international arena. From the first Xhosa cry that opens the album, you know you're listening to a major vocal talent. There's a clarity and strength to the voice that is at heart African, but can handle various other styles with ease.
Most of the songs are African songs sung in Xhosa, Swazi and Zulu, but there are a scattering of English songs, and an Indonesian song. Makeba is probably at her best singing in her native tongue, Xhosa. Her clicks, so foreign to the western ear are a delight, especially on the "The Click Song". The classic "Wimoweh", listed here as "Mbube" is a stirring rendition of the song which is also known as "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
Amongst the English songs is a cover of "House of the Rising Sun" which is sung with great emotion. Then there is the rather irritating Austrian tune "One More Dance", the irritation comes from the forced laughter of the male voice and not from anything Makeba does. She maintains dignity while the overacted laughter grates in the background. This is however, the only low point in the album.
This is a great easy listening album. In the words of Harry Belafonte on the cover "The combination of Makeba, the music and the musicians erupted into a kind of musical spontaneous combustion rarely encountered in a studio". High praise indeed for an album worthy of it.
By the way for those who don't know Miriams Makeba's full name is Zensi

7. SHILOH'S CORNER

FRED NEIL
Songwriter, musician and mentor for the likes of David Crosby, Tim Buckley, Richie Havens and many more. With baritone voice and twelve string guitar, Fred arrived from Florida to join the minstrels that hung out at the corner of Bleecker and MacDougal street, New York city.
In the early days he played the Memphis scene with Buddy Holly and wrote songs for Roy Orbison. One particular track, 'Candy man' which he wrote for Roy Orbison was chosen for the b-side of 'Crying' and gave him a certain amount of public appeal. A regular at the Night Owl café, Fred finally got acknowledged for writing the track 'Everybody's Talking' which Nilsson brought to the charts on the cult sixties "Midnight Cowboy" sound track.
One of his songs 'Dolphins' has been sung by countless folkies while Jefferson Airplane took one of his tracks 'The other side of this life' to greater heights. During the late sixties Fred eluded interviews and media, performing only in small coffee shops and pubs. Unlike Johnny Cash, Fred was quite adept in mid range vocal and a young Bob Dylan would often assist him on the harmonica in the early sixties. His backing crew in 1965 were John Sebastian (Loving Spoonful), and Felix Pappalardi (Mountain) who assisted him in most live performances.
Neil left the big city life and retired to Coconut grove in South Florida. Apart from a few benefit concerts for dolphins and whales, he remains an enigma of the sixties. A source of inspiration for the likes of Nick Drake, Tim Buckley, Crosby, Stills and many more. And although his songs have been covered by a diversity of artists no one sings Freddy Neil quite like Freddy Neil.

Just a query of all the SA artistes currently subscribing... what do they think of Napster? I know the record companies feel they are getting shafted, but Fatboy Slim's label has gone on the record saying they dunno what all the fuss is about, they pay top dollar to market a group and here is a site that does it for them for free. Me, if I find a track I like on Napster I then go out and buy the album on CD... I treat Napster as a sampler.

I'm doing a website on Rabbitt. I'm from the USA and I'm a college student and this is my project. I chose Rabbitt because I always liked their music. I was following Duncan Faure's career when he joined the Rollers {originally the Bay City Rollers - ed} and backtracked to his old bands and Rabbitt popped up. It was a great band! I still listen to their music today - it just has a timeless quality to it. The four of them made a great team. But they never made it to the US as a group. I'm trying to find out more about Neil Cloud and Ronnie Robot for my website because there isn't anything on their backgrounds. If you know of anything, please let me know.
