JIMI HENDRIX
James Marshall Hendrix, born Johnny Allen Hendrix on 27 November 1942 in Seattle, Washington, USA would have been 58 years old this week.
ELECTRIC GYPSY
He's been called a genius, a poet, temperamental, unpredictable and controversial. He was all these things and more... Jimi Hendrix, the Electric Gypsy, took the guitar to places it had never been before and rock and roll would never be the same again. He died on the 18 September 1970.

EDDIE KRAMER
Most of the tracks on the new box set are previously unreleased and were mixed by Eddie Kramer. Eddie (no relation to David Kramer) was born in Cape Town, South Africa, and as a child studied classical piano, cello and violin. He attended the prestigious South African college of Music. He left for England in the early 60s aged 19.

FREDDIE MERCURY
Thursday (23 November) was a special day - the 9th anniversary of Freddie Mercury's death from an Aids-related illness. The frontman of Queen was unforgettable, for that incredible voice, unrepeatable stage
performances, and a life that made no apologies. He may be gone, but
his music is still here to celebrate.

BACKSTREET BOYS IN CAPE TOWN
We’ve been keeping some impressive company recently. Not only did the
"very" successful boy band, the Backstreet Boys, deign to include Cape
Town/South Africa on their 100-hour five-city jaunt on a
specially-fitted 737 jet to promote their new album called ‘Black &
Blue’ (see, it works this publicity thing!!), but Cape Town also found
itself on a major city guerilla-publicity shortlist that included brief
stopovers/press conferences/happy snaps in Tokyo, Sydney, Rio de Janeiro and New York.
It was "Beatlemania" all over again, sort of. Fresh from their
prestigious ‘Best Group’ award at the MTV Europe ceremony, the five
members of this boy band met the Cape press and a fortunate selection of teenage fans at a press conference at the Radisson Hotel, close to the Waterfront. Jeremy Dowson, writing in the Cape Times, reported that the group had to field questions like "what would the band do if a fan
shielded them from a bullet fired by a sniper?". The band was
momentarily dumbstruck before band leader Kevin Richardson
"diplomatically volunteered": "We’d be very grateful". After a further
discussion it was agreed that the band would "definitely go to hospital
with the fan". Welcome to South Africa you ous!.
The band needs all the international exposure it can get if it is to
out-do label mates N’SYNC and that boy band’s record-breaking sales run
with ‘No Strings Attached’ earlier this year. There is also competition
from the two competing Rap juggernaut albums from Jay-Zee and Outkast
(currently first and second in the US charts), the new U2 album, ‘All
That You Can Leave Behind’, and some competition from the genuine
article, the new already-platinum ‘1’s’ album from The Beatles. This red with a yellow one on the cover is a one-CD collection of the band’s 27 No. 1 singles in the UK and US. So good luck to the Backstreet Boytjies as they head off to play in the big leagues.
This boy band phenomenon is becoming very annoying as there is something too mass-produced about the whole genre. Try differentiating between Backstreet Boys, Boyzone, BoyzIIMen, Westlife, N’SYNC, Five, Nine, and their soppy ballads. I submit that, as with the UK book charts where they mention that children’s titles are excluded from the Sales charts (for obvious Harry Potter reasons), all these boy bands should have their own charts where they can compete against each other for years. Give them their own channel on satellite and then we will start to see some real pop on MTV.
Like Jim said: "The men don’t know, but the little girls understand".

SOUND SOLUTIONS
SOUND SOLUTIONS is a new, Cape Town-based music resource that offers two main areas of expertise and assistance:
1) Music Searches - Assists in recommending and finding relevant music
soundtracks for television, cinema and radio commercials and
productions.
2) Music Licensing - Assists in obtaining the publishing and recording
rights for music to be used as soundtracks for commercials and other
productions.
Where necessary, international tracks are suggested, located or
licensed. However SOUND SOLUTIONS is striving to recommend more South
African songs for these commercials. This is seen as a way of bringing
extra funds back into the SA music industry and artists’ pockets, as
well as giving SA artists the opportunity of gaining the invaluable
exposure that a song on a TV or cinema advert can bring.
You have seen the Santam ‘Yellow Umbrella’ commercial, which utilizes
the Blk Sonshine song ‘Born In A Taxi’. This track was suggested by
Sound Solutions when the rights to the desired Bob Marley song were
denied to the producers of the commerciaL. Blk Sonshine were amply
reimbursed for licensing their track, and copies of the ‘Blk Sonshine’
CD now carry a sticker announcing "As heard in the Santam TV Ad...".

SARON GAS

Saron Gas - it's a strange name (acquired from the name of a sound effect, if you're interested), but it's also the name of a band South Africans are coming to call the most talented hard rock/grunge outfit in the country.
On Monday night (20 November) the trio comprising Saron Gas - Shaun Welgemoed (vocals and guitar); Dale Stewart (bass guitar and backing vocals); and Dave Cohoe (drums and backing vocals) - bought more rock to the Hard Rock Cafe in Illovo, Johannesburg, than the large poster of Mick Jagger adorning the wall might ever suggest it would.
The group did not only draw their very strong contingent of moshing Saron Gas supporters and every journo in Jozi, but SA's big band boys also showed up to get a taste of the Saron's offerings: Just Jinger, fresh back from the UK for their SA tour were skulking around the venue, and Sugardrive was just outright jamming to the Saron Gas sounds.
What is it that creates such a huge response to a band which has, so far, only released one single ('69 Tea' which made it to No 2 on 5fm and is soon to be followed by the second single 'Fine Again')?
Well, the fans were there because they have been following the group around on their live gigs and know what they capable of. A few others may have been blown away at festivals (Oppikoppi and Woodstock 2000), but I think the case with most is that upon hearing '69 tea', the realisation that a band who can craft such a phenomenal song has a lot more to offer is unavoidable, and they want to find out what that is.
Firstly there's the Nirvana thing. You cannot possibly help but be reminded of Nirvana when you listen to Saron Gas. This may sound like a negative attack on the group's originality, but it's not. Welgemoed's voice is chillingly similar to Kurt Cobain's, and Saron works in the same genre of grunge/rock, and so to make the comparison is a natural progression in categorising their talent.
Monday night saw the group go through all the tracks off their new album 'Fragile'. I must say that after having the album for a week and listening to it continually, I've become a touch addicted, and so seeing the group performing live was a real experience in butt-kicking music appreciation.
Who knew three men could produce such a loud, growling set, and in an instant change to reflect the unique subtleties of their composition - those catchy riffs under the slamming drum loops are just something else!
What's going to make Saron Gas go far, especially with this album, is that their brand of music is not just going to appeal to a hardcore (and very small) South African hard rock audience. They go beyond that because they have other elements cleverly woven into their tunes, and 'Fragile' can be appreciated by a very wide listenership (minus the kiddies who definitely should not learn Welgemoed's manner of expression).
And if 'Fragile' is not the most exportable product I have heard in a long time, then the amount of sweat Saron Gas sweated on Monday night was not enough to fill a bucket.
Saron Gas works for the music it produces, and it is not only 'Fragile' that is proof of this.
After all the work they put into the album, and the seething set they played on Monday, you could forgive the Sarons for sitting back and taking a break. But no - they were watching their CDs selling like hot cakes, signing autographs at a furious pace, and they're now about to embark on a nationwide tour that is geographically encompassing enough to be competition for the voortrekkers.
So, if like the rest of the South African rock-listening population, you want some more of what '69 tea' offered, check out Saron Gas's touring schedule and discover why I think they're one of the most talented and deserving groups to make waves on the SA rock scene in a while.

NEW RELEASES FROM BMG
BMG SA’s new jazz label, Giant Steps, has been churning out the goodies
since its inception earlier this year. Already we’ve seen album releases from various newcomers to the SA jazz scene including The Moss Mogale Unit (‘Forget Me Not’), Africa O’Ye (Moment Of Truth’), and Musa Manzini whose single ‘Renaissance Song’, off his album ‘New Reflections’, recently topped the P4 charts.
To further cement this exciting new label and expose the quality jazz it will be unveiling in the future, BMG SA has released a 14-track
compilation called ‘Giant Steps’ (natch!). On this collection we find
international artists like Tom Scott & The LA Express (’Smokin’
Section’) and Spyro Gyra (‘Silk & Satin’) rubbing shoulders with Blk
Sonshine (‘Bahlalefi’), Moses Taiwa Molelekwa (‘Itumeleng’) and other
excellent contributions from Louis Mahlanga and Eric van der Western,
Selaelo Selota, Africa O’ye, Moss Mogale Unit, Hugh Masekela, and Musa
Manzini.
New SA jazz diva, Judith Sephuma, is due to release her debut album on
the Giant Steps label during 2001, joining her new and illustrious
labelmates Vusi Mahlasela, Selaelo Selota and Louis Mahlanga and his
band Musik Ye Afrika.
Another new name on the BMG SA label is the female R&B artist Galatia,
who only decided to become a singer while living in Germany as an
exchange student. Galatia’s host mother convinced her to sing with a
local jazz band (Groove Unlimited) after hearing her sing in the shower. Galatia toured with this group during 1997 and 1998 before returning to SA. Two singles followed (recorded in Germany), before Galatia linked up with Cool Funk, Cape Town’s hot new production team, and the single ‘Back Together’ was the result. This EP also contains an R&B/Ragga track called ‘As Long As’, which is shaping up as a key summer dance track over the next few months.
Finally, besides the popular soundtrack to ‘Coyote Ugly’, featuring
LeAnn Rimes and her chart-topping theme from the movie called ‘Can’t
Fight The Moonlight’, BMG has given an SA release to ‘No Angel’, the
extraordinary debut album from Dido. Dido is the sister of Rollo from
the dance outfit Faithless, and she appeared on two tracks on that
group’s recent ‘Sunday 8PM’ album. She also found part of her song
‘Thank You’ sampled on ‘Stan’ a track off Eminem’s latest ‘Marshall
Mathers LP’. With songs like ‘Here With Me’, Thank You’, ‘Honestly OK’,
and ‘Don’t Think Of Me’ reflecting Dido’s stunning voice and keen grasp
of styles, ‘No Angel’ is going to be the chilled pop album of the

5.USA FOR SA

VIVID MEMORIES OF STATIC - SCOOTERS UNION
This is a gem of an album. I'm amazed that 'Vivid Memories of Static'
holds together so well, containing not only rock songs with beautiful vocal harmonies and lovely melodies, but country-tinged tunes, a couple of decidedly avant-garde numbers, and closing with an instrumental accordion track. Scooters Union holds it all together throughout.
The musicians on this gem are:
Nux Schwartz -- Guitar and vocals, and other instruments. Nux wrote
all but two of the songs, and those he co-wrote.
Greg Leisegang -- piano, organ, programming, vocals, synthesizer, pedal
steel, and many other instruments.
Danny Major -- bass
Steve du Plessis -- drums, vocals, samples, and other instruments and
effects.
Rhys Johnstone -- vocals
'Falling Domino' -- One of the three singles from the CD, and an
absolutely beautiful number to open with.
'Milk Cow Butterlake' -- Nice country-rock, and "country" as in classic
traditional country, not the rock 'n' roll with a Tennessee accent that
passes for country nowadays. And "rock" as in original Scooters Union.
One line I thought ironic because this CD came all the way from South
Africa to Texas for me to hear one of the Scooters Union guys say, "I sure can yodel!"
'FishDish' -- Nicely bizarre. For full appreciation of the strangeness
of this number, I recommend that one drive through Texas for an hour or two and put this on to pass through the prosaic town of Brady. Then the
contrast between avant-garde and ordinary will be more keenly felt.
'Okay' -- Country rock that really rocks along, nice and upbeat. One
of the three singles, as well it should be.
'Venus' -- Another quirky number, not so out there as 'FishDish', but
some nice sounds and effects pass through this song.
'Braveheart' -- This song makes me feel good. The refrain is
penetrating as well -- listen and later you'll hear the chorus slipping back into your mind. Another one of the three singles, perfectly radio-friendly. Great lyrics, especially the line, "...we're turning all our weapons into song...."
'Blueman in a Bulldozer' -- A long and harmonic rock song that builds
and then lets the listener down gently. Inventive and, in common with the other numbers on 'Vivid Memories of Static', it has well-written lyrics.
'Skoppelmaai' -- In my American ignorance I guess that this song sounds
like an Boer barn dance number, which thought is aided by the title.
Though the music of Scooters Union on 'Vivid Memories of Static' is
different from that of Wonderboom, I can't help but feel that the two bands are similar. Both are first CDs that demonstrate rock-mastery of idioms and the studio, while giving us some great rock songs. And Scooters Union's second CD is to be looked forward to, as was the second Wonderboom CD.
In these songs, one notices some diverse influences, but they are only
ghosts of influences that pass through the consistent originality of
Scooters Union. That consistent originality is what holds this diverse
album together.
I understand that Rhys has left the band and that Scooters Union is
carrying on as a four-piece rock outfit. They are working on a new CD that recreates more of their live sound.
I don't know how Nux and Danny and the other musicians in Scooters
Union will react to my adjective choice, but I think 'Vivid Memories of
Static' is a lovely album, though certainly not an ordinary one.

6.CLASSIC ROCK

DELICIOUS MONSTER - DAVID KRAMER
After the runaway success of "Hak Hom Blokkies" where was the Boland Bopper to go? Why back to the dorps of 50's South Africa where jollers and jivers cruised the streets in their Ford Cortinas. Where Ruk 'n Pluk (Rock 'n Roll) was king. For those of you who were put off by the Boere-musiek style of "Blokkies" you'll be pleased to know that there's not an accordian in sight on this record.
It is a record steeped in nostalgia, at times bordering on melancholic
depression. However there are enough uplifting songs to offset the more
sombre ones. There is pure Rock 'n Roll ("Budgie & the Jets" and "Bakgat Boogie"), some Country and Western ("Country & Western Town" & "Barman") and some pure pop ditties ("Ballad of an MCP" and "Suburban Dream"). There's even a take on the high octane rock of Meatloaf with "Father's Son".
As always with Kramer, the lyrics are astute. He probably had to have his tongue surgically removed from his cheek after lines like "a woman if she's married should never wear the pants/ her duty's to her husband and picking up his skants" from "Ballad of an MCP". However my favourite rhyming couplet comes from "Suburban Dream" is which he describes part of his house in Marais Road, Panorama with the line "The guttering is painted blue/ And round the back there's a braaivleis plek/ for the girl there's a separate loo".
There's even space for a bit of kwela on "Cowboy" which pre-dates Mango
Groove for the use of a penny whistle on a non-Irish "white" album.
The only throwaway song is a cover of Neil Sedaka's "Oh Carol" (Oh Kêrel?) sung in the veldskoened one's best Seth Efrikun eksent, and doesn't add anything to the album.
He may never regain the dizzy commercial heights he reached with "Hak Hom Blokkies" but he has certainly supassed it, musically with this blast from the past serving of pure Boere Bop. So put aside any Blokkies tainted view of Kramer and listen to him at his best.

HEY JOE (WHO DUNNIT?)
'Hey Joe' became an essential part of the mid-sixties sound track, yet label credits seemed confusing and tell a different story every time.
On record the first group ever to chart with 'Hey Joe' was a psychedelic band headed by Jim Pons, called The Leaves. Although first recorded in 1965, it sold poorly, then a new lead guitarist, Bobby Arlin bought himself a fuzz box and rearranged the version which became a colossal hit (US #31 in June 1966), but was however their last. Jim Pons went on the play with The Turtles and Frank Zappa. The song was credited to one Chester A. Powers (who was really Dino Valenti, later of Quicksilver Messenger Service), but the real composer was an obscure West Coast folk-singer by the name of William "Billy" Roberts.
In 1966 The Byrds, recorded a sloppy version of 'Hey Joe' on their album 'Fifth Dimension', listing no song writing credits. It became quite the rage to reflect at least one version of this particular melody on your album, and untidy versions were expressed by The Shadows on Knight, Music Machine and the Californian band Love.
The power of 'Hey Joe' came to fruition when released by James Marshall Hendrix (born Johnny Allen Hendrix on 27 November 1942) as a seven single which hit number 6 on the UK charts.
Thanks to Jimi Hendrix, British rock band Deep Purple brought forth an inspiring version on their debut album 'Shades of Deep Purple' in 1968. Johnny Rivers brought a tasteful version forth on his 'Realisation' album and cult band Spirit from California also recorded it. A young guitarist called Randy California created some of the most balanced guitar work behind this creative melody. Tight versions can also be found on Alvin Lee's Ten Years Later Live album released in the seventies and there is an astounding interpretation by Eddie Phillips, formerly with the British beat band, The Creation.
Last but not least American songwriter Tim Rose (famous for 'Morning Dew') now lays claim to this song. Tim Rose was formerly a member of a group called Band of Joy with Robert Plant on the vocals (pre-Led Zeppelin). The mystery still lingers...

WOODPECKERS FROM SPACE
Anybody looking for 'Woodpeckers From Space' by SA's own Café Society can find this track on the 'Top 40 Hits of All Time Volume 5' 2CD set
released by Scorpio Music at the end of 1999.
'Woodpeckers From Space' was a Number 1 hit in SA in July 1985 and stayed 19 weeks on the Top 20.

Great write up on the MELT 2000 releases. Tim and I have been playing them for a couple of months, and have had great responses from our listeners.
Probably my favourite tracks are: Lungiswa's Xhosa version of Marvin Gaye's "Inner City Blues", and Amampondo's "The Journey" off "Global Vibes". Every time either Tim or I play that one, the phones ring off the hook in the studio! It's a perfect blend of Celtic, jungle beat and techno - gets the spirit moving every time!
We've been playing a lot of South African music on US radio recently. Tim did a 2 hour show last week, which he called "South Africa 2000", featuring the music he doesn't get to play on his world music show. Artists included: Boo!, Springbok Nude Girls, Fetish, Plastic Ocean, Blacklist, Foot C Foot C (getting lots of attention for their "These Boots Are Made For Walking"!!), Ibomvu (Kwaito Jazz House), Trompies, Mafikizolo, Qzoo, and many more. Two hours of great South African music!
I am planning on doing another 2 hour SA Women In Music show soon, so if there's anyone out there who thinks I could be missing out on any great ladies, let me know! That show is more rock-pop oriented, and the last 2 hour special I did featured artists like Lesley Rae Dowling, Fetish, Karma, Qzoo and Little Sister.

All submissions need to be in plain text e-mail format with no attachments, please. You may, however, include URLs in your e-mails which point to websites or images on-line.
E-mails in HTML format, or e-mails all in lower-case or all in CAPITALS will tend to be ignored as they take too long to correct for inclusion in the Digest.
Any e-mail with an ".exe" file attached will automatically be trashed.
Bulk mailings which show everybody's addresses also tend to get trashed automatically.
