SA ARTISTS GRAB FOUR KORA AWARDS

Jabu Khanyile, Lucky Dube, Bongo Maffin, Zenzi, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo were the South African artists honoured at the glittering KORA awards ceremony held at Sun City on Saturday night. Kaysha, a rap artist from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, won the prestigious ‘Best African Artist’ Award. Jabu Khanyile (ex-Bayete) won ‘Best Group or Artist’ for his solo album, ’The Prince’. Lucky Dube’s video for ‘The Way It Is’ won the "Best African Video" Award, Zenzi was voted "Most Promising Female Artist", and Bongo Maffin’s efforts with ‘Ndiphendule’ won them the "Best African Arrangement" prize.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo were honoured with a special judges prize for their contribution to African Music, and Kofi Annan (a non-musician as far as we know) deservedly earned the "Lifetime Achievement Award" for his sterling international peace efforts since becoming the Secretary General of the United Nations.

Other winners at Sun City were: Seba (Algeria) - ‘Best North African Artist or Group’; Andre-Marie Tala (Cameroon) - ‘Best Central African Artist or Group’; Sisqo (USA) - ‘Best Diaspora/African-American Artist or Group’ {for ‘Thong Song’? Surely not! - Ed}; Jean-Marc Volcy (Seychelles) - 'Best East African Artist or Group’; Wanamah (Ivory Coast) - ‘Most Promising Male Artist’; and Extra Musica (Democratic Republic of the Congo) - ‘Best African Group’.

The evening’s proceedings were hosted by Angelique Kidjo (The Benin Songstress), Kerishnie Naicker (Miss SA 1997), and Alex Taylor (Head of Radio France Internationale). The judges were Boncana Maiga from West Africa, Toun Adedoyin from West Africa, Princess Erika from Central Africa and Gallen TK Besson from East Africa. SA diva Sibongile Khumalo completed the panel of judges and acted as their president.

This awards ceremony was followed on Sunday by a massive ‘Million Against AIDS’ Benefit concert in Johannesburg, which included performances by many of these prizewinners and a host of the top names in SA music. Messages of support in the fight against AIDS, by these celebrities, were broadcast across the African continent.

SEMISANE
Hit The Seaside Tour Trail

With Semisane’s classy debut album, ‘A Life Less Strange’, having already yielded two successful singles - ‘Trying To Believe’ (No 1 on 5FM) and ‘Right Here’ (No 1 on the SA Rock Digest SA Songs Charts) - this Cape Town-based four piece are heading off on an 11-date tour along the coast to spread their intelligent pop music, and shape and expose a whole bunch of new songs for an unspecified next album.

Prior to that, Semisane will spend two weeks in Johannesburg shooting a video of the song (and next single) ‘Alright’. This song will join some other SA songs as part of the upcoming World AIDS Day broadcast on SABCTV 1 2 and 3.

The band and BMG SA believe there are still a few potential singles on ‘A Life Less Strange’ including ‘Alright’, ‘Time’, Now I Know’, ‘Southbound’ and ‘Never Alone’. So there’s no feeling of any urgency to get something new out just yet. Sascha Muller (drums), Tikara (vocals and guitar), Chris Acker (guitar) and Nick Acker (bass) seem to have the SA pop scene at their feet. Their songs draw roars of recognition when played live, and one invariably hears a comment along those old ironic lines of "I heard that song on the radio and had no idea it was a South African band". Going to be hearing that a lot more often!

There has also been some strong interest in the band from Germany, which is exciting news for Semisane and those who feel they are something novel and special. But there are no pipe dreams among this levelheaded gang, just an eagerness to get out on tour. The tour begins at Chilli ‘n Lime in Greenpoint on Saturday 2 December. It then moves to The Wilderness, Gonubie, East London, Plettenberg Bay, Knysna and George, before finishing off BACK IN Cape Town at the Independent Armchair Theatre on Friday 29 December.

Those December dates and venues in full are:

Saturday 2 - The Wilderness (Tom’s Tavern)
Friday 8 & Saturday 9 - Gonubie (Settlers Sports Club)
Wednesday 13 & Friday 15 - East London (Buccaneers)
Saturday 16 - Plettenberg Bay (Flashbacks)
Wednesday 20 & Thursday 21 - Knysna (Tin Roof Blues)
Friday 22 - George (Hermann’s Café)
Friday 29 - Cape Town (Independent Armchair Theatre)

Big Concerts sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience this may have caused Macy Gray fans.

However, on the brighter side: BIG CONCERTS and 5FM are proud to announce that the Australian pop duo Savage Garden will be performing two SA dates in December. The duo comprises singer/songwriter Darren Hayes and tunesmith/instrumentalist Daniel Jones The duo’s 1997 self-titled debut album achieved world-wide sales of 11 million, thanks to their world-wide hit singles, ‘I Want You’, ‘To The Moon and Back’, and ‘Truly Madly Deeply’. The pair's effervescent pop music made them stars in their native Australia in 1996, when "I Want You" and "To the Moon & Back" became back-to-back number one hits.

Their second album, ‘Affirmation’, has sold more than 2.3 million copies in the U.S. alone. Among the tracks on the album is first single ‘I Knew I Loved You’, ‘Two Beds and a Coffee Machine’, ‘The Animal Song’ (which is also found on the soundtrack to the recent Diane Keaton and Juliette Lewis film ‘The Other Sister’), ‘I Don’t know you anymore’, and the song ‘Affirmation’ that brought Savage Garden their biggest audience yet when they performed it during the closing ceremony of the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, on 1 October.

Savage Garden will be at the MTN Sundome, Johannesburg (December 14), and at the Big Arena, Canal Walk, Cape Town (December 17).

TICKET PRICES:

SMASHING PUMPKINS
The Big Arena, Canal Walk, Century City
14 November 2000

The first live performance of note for this great new Cape Town (Big) concert venue was celebrated ironically by the Smashing Pumpkins' final international concert. Billy Corgan was in a strange mood as he chatted to the crowd and rubbed salt in their wounds: "This is our first concert in Cape Town, and as you know, it's also going to be our last. After tonight we are going to do one more stadium concert in Chicago and then end off with a small club gig. But don't worry, there's lots of good new music out there to take our place, Britney Spears, Christine Aguilera, these are artists who are happy to rock AND dance for you". He basked in the crowd's continued adulation and pronounced them the best of the three cities he played in (sorry Joeys and Durbs). Generally a cliché, as we all pretend not to know, but from Billy it's a sincere compliment, he wouldn't say it if he didn't mean it. So he was definitely in an obliging and generous mood.

So big, bad Billy the King rode into Cape Town with his gang and anointed his last international audience with bottled water, and inaugurated this huge, majestic marquee that sprung up alongside the canal that encircles the new Century City mega-mallopolis. He gazed around the dark, lofty interior of this gigantic tent and asked if there were going to be elephants following the band on stage. James Iha later continued the pachyderm theme with his improvised "Respect the Rhinos of the Serengeti" jam-along ditty during the encore, obviously influenced by their recent safari.

The band also threw snatches of rock samples in amongst their dream set list. They played David Essex's 'Rock On', Cream's 'Sunshine Of Your Love', and a run through of plenty of their classic songs off their five wondrous albums - 'Ava Adore' and 'Perfect' off 'Adore'; 'Today' off 'Siamese Dream'; 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' and 'Tonight, Tonight' off 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness'; 'The Everlasting Gaze', 'The Sacred And Profane', and 'Stand Inside Your Love' off 'Machina: The Machines Of God', which was not their final album, as we had all believed. That honour, as explained by the pre-concert announcer, goes to an album called 'Machina II / The Friends & Enemies Of Modern Music', which was released in a limited edition of 25 copies and distributed among the band's closest family, friends, fans, and fortunate webmasters. It is now available on the Net as multiple downloads, if you have the desire. Many down the mosh pit obviously did, as they waved hands enthusiastically for the handful of songs off this new album, while everyone else took a short break.

Billy Corgan formed the Smashing Pumpkins back in 1988 with the intention of looking (and sounding) different to any other '90's band. That's why he enlisted the oriental-looking pair of James Iha and D'arcy Wretsky to complete the line up, with Jimmy Chamberlin on drums. D'arcy left about a year ago and was replaced by ex-Hole bassist, Melissa Auf Der Maur, who flanks Corgan like a young Rita Hayworth in a slinky scarlet dress. Iha, hunched over his guitar in a red Versace suit and long fringe, takes up his usual position to the left of Billy, the shaven-headed rock lighthouse dressed in a black polo neck jersey and long black leather skirt (looked very cool though!). Chamberlin was content to beat the crap out of his drum kit in a black cut-off T-shirt and long, short black pants (in case you're interested). So, the band Corgan finished up with still looks (and sounds) different to any other in rock, and they will be severely missed.

It was a tangibly sentimental evening with no support act to steal thunder (unlikely) or divert attention from the Smashing Pumpkins. It was their special night and they loved every minute of it. The band finished their final encore with Chamberlin joining the band on acoustic guitar for a stirring version of '1979'. Then they all reluctantly filed off, leaving Billy Corgan alone on stage. He joined his hands in a praying, thankful gesture and soaked up the crowds deafening adulation. Then he showed us his silver shoes, and was gone. We caught a final glimpse of him backstage, wrapped up in a hooded gown like a boxer, waving to his fans as he sped off in a Red Combi, back to the band's hotel in the Waterfront. It had been a very 'in-tents' experience for him, his band, the road crew, and an emotional Cape Town audience. (SS)

* The band are scheduled to play their final two shows in the US at the Chicago United Centre Arena (November 29) and the Metro Club in Chicago in December.

5.USA FOR SA
---------------

SHARP CUTS VOLUME 3

After I bought the first two in the 'Sharp Cuts' series, I bought
'Sharp Cuts 3'. I didn't buy it merely because I had the previous two
volumes, I bought 'Sharp Cuts 3' because I expected it to be as
listen-worthy as the first two.

The 'Sharp Cuts' series has some of the best South African hits of the
Seventies, Eighties, and Nineties. 'Sharp Cuts 3' is sub-titled 'South
African Pop Volume 2' because it's more like 'Sharp Cuts 1' in that both have more pop dance numbers than rock. That is not to say there aren't some "serious" or straight-ahead rock songs on this disc, but the tracks do emphasize dance and pop numbers.

'I Like' -- John Ireland. A song sensuous and sensual at the same
time. I know rock and pop are all about love and, and... you know, but this guy brings in a deli and really gets the juices going. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy this song -- and it certainly is an attention-grabber opening the CD.

'Baby You Been Good to Me' -- Robin Auld is a South African performer
who seems to be reaching for artist-dom. Bernard Binns is another who has pop roots yet plays a modern artistic rock nowadays. In this case, great hook. Robin Auld has a distinct manner that leads me to say, without any self-consciousness about stating the obvious, that no
one does a Robin Auld song like Robin Auld. It makes sense to me in that his music is distinctively his.

But how does a record label let a guy's greatest hits go out of print
just when he releases a new CD?

'Here We Are' -- Face to Face. Great slow-dancing make-out tune. I
wonder how many couples think of this as "Our song"?

'Working Girls' -- Working Girls. How's business? A jumping number,
sounds like the opener for a rousing rock and dance show.

'Teddy Bear' -- The Spectres. A classic-sounding song, of the night
club entertainment variety. It's an old-fashioned yet modern-sounding song in the genre of death rock -- a genre whose name sounds worse than it is, including as it does such numbers as 'Leader of the Pack' and 'Endless Sleep' (the latter is covered by Group 66 on 'The Best of SA Pop Volume 3').

'Celebrate' by Julian Laxton is the kind of quality rock song I've come
to expect from Mr. Laxton. I envy you all who can catch his blues rock
shows at his club, Julian's Bistro and Theatre in Johannesburg, without
driving 7,000 miles.

'My Kind of Girl' -- Cinema. A catchy dance number, a happy
My-Girl-is-Special song. The bass and drums thunder along nicely behind the vocals and organ. It has that back beat a rock 'n' roll song needs.

'All Dressed Up' -- Mac the Nite. I like the group's punny name and
their song. 'All Dressed Up' is light and nightclub poppy. Each time I
hear this song I remember how a college housemate of mine in Austin, Texas, got a "dear john call" just like the singer did. He also had two tickets for a show, so he and I went to the show, drank his cognac, and saw Yes. Some ou named Trevor Rabin was with them. I guess I can bring my own nostalgia to some SA rock songs.

'Hey Baby' -- Wooden Idols. Deliberate phrasing by a female singer,
nice "Hey baby" hook. Perhaps not as professional-sounding as the other
tunes on the CD, despite the fact that their album was produced by Kevin Shirley, but this number is simply well done.

'I Never Loved a Man' -- the late Margaret Singana. By the title this
sounds like it should be a slow and meaningful blues number, but it is
upbeat and more pop-gospel, with some revival church influence, complete with chorus and handclaps, in the arrangement. Miss Margaret belts it out admirably. Give with the hip swivel. Hallelujah!

'King of Swing' -- Soft Shoes (Elvis Astaire). One of several dance
numbers on this CD that would not have been out of place in a Fifties
nightclub. Kinda doo-wop, kinda big band, kinda hip.

'Shame On You' -- Flash Harry. Due to the description in 'The History
of Contemporary Music of South Africa', I expected Flash Harry to be a show band with a sense of humor. (Among his talents, Keith Berel is known also for "playing the fool"). But this is a long and serious rock tune with meaningful lyrics. Whether they play serious or funny songs, I look forward to the Flash Harry re-release.

'Julia' is a pretty song by Sue Kriel, but it is odd that Sue is a
woman singing a love song to another woman. A movie theme, perhaps? A
touch of lavender? Dunno. Pretty, though. {Ed: this is a cover of the Pavlov's Dog song off 'Pampered Menial' (1975)}

'Jazz Collection' -- Jax Myth makes a laid back song about
post-break-up with distant female vocals over piano, drums, and synthesized strings. Nicely written lyrics with smooth slides into the chorus. I don't expect the refrain, yet do anticipate it; cleverly sung.

'I Found Love' -- Alida White bounces a few times then jumps right into
a wall-of-sound pop-rock song heavy on the singalong chorus. Something
wrong with that? Heck no, it's desired in a pop song.

'Fire' -- The Boys. Arch vocals, cool instrumentation, and neat
cracking, clapping effect that shoots between the speakers. I can see the flashing lights in the nightclub now. Slide on out and move to the snakey rhythm.

I don't know if the 'Sharp Cuts' series is going out of print, but One
World has only 'Sharp Cuts 3' listed these days. Overall, this is a nice collection of songs as full of talented singers and smooth, professional musicians as you'll find anywhere. Three or four of the songs are available on other compilations, but the rest aren't so far as I know. You don't have to be a collecting completist to buy 'Sharp Cuts 3', it stands up well alongside the other two in the series or without them.

----------------

AG PLEEZ DEDDY - JEREMY TAYLOR
Gallo CDRED 608, 1997

Quite what the appeal of 'The Ballad of the Southern Suburbs' (or 'Ag Pleez Deddy' as it's more affectionately know) is, is somewhat a mystery to me. It's a very simple tune strummed on an acoustic guitar and sung by an ou who doesn't have the greatest voice, yet this little ditty has made it's way into South African musical folklore and is still regarded as a classic nearly 40 years on. Although I can't put my finger on why, I, like thousands of other South Africans love this song, possibly it's the reference to all those lekker things of one's youth like candy floss and eskimo pies that keep this song fresh and alive.

It opens this greatest hits collection of Taylor's and is followed by it's parody "The Ballad of the Northern Suburbs" featuring Valerie Miller on vocals and expounds on what the Northen Suburb girls long for ("Champagne, caviar, polo and jaguar..."), but Pa from Rosettenville still wears the pants.

Outside of his greatest hit at it's parody, the album is a great collection of lighthearted, predominantly, folk tunes, with incisive lyrics that make one smile but at the same time think about what was going on in SA at the time. As funny as the songs are some of the reasons the SABC gave for banning the songs such as "being offensive to a section of the population" ('Lift Girl's Lament'), "corrupting the morals of the youth" ('Confession'), and for mixing English and Afrikaans in one song for "destroying the purity of the languages" ('Mommy I'd like to be').

Taylor tries on various accents, Southern Suburbs SA, Northern Suburbs SA, Black, and even a cockney in "Jobsworth" and a number of styles from simple acoustic folk through Kwela to an almost country & western sound. This variety keeps one interested in the album.

Obviously it's worth having this album for 'Ag Pleez Deddy' on it's own, but there's a feel-good factor and a few good laughs to be had from the rest of the album as well as simple yet effective tunes that make this album a must have in any collection.

RELAXZOR - SPRINGBOK NUDE GIRLS

Let’s recap. This Springbok tight five led the successful Stellenbosch rock invasion, emerging halfway through the ‘90’s with their winning blend of sonic metal, strong and melodic songs, rousing and deafening concerts and iconic frontman and musicians. They released three classic SA rock albums (‘Neanderthal 1’, ‘Afterlifesatisfaction’, and ‘Surpass The Powers’) and a half-dozen collectable EPs, and bestrode the SA rock scene like talented and fully-confident rude boys, planning each step of their rock careers, yet striving to avoid the 'Blue Eyes’ path to (sell out) pop glory that kept opening up before them. They remained focused and a law unto themselves, both live and in the studio, believing in their collective ability to make their own decisions regarding styles, sounds, and set lists.

‘Powers’ producer Kevin Shirley only handled the mixing duties, this time, at the Hit Factory in New York. The band produced this 15-track collection themselves, hence the mixed reviews that greeted this new album ‘Relaxzor’. It is a similar criticism to that which has been leveled at Just Jinger, namely wouldn’t these bands benefit from a judicious objective opinion regarding material and editing. Anathema to groups like the Nude Girls, which is why everyone is looking so carefully and critically at this new album. But ‘Relaxzor’ is anything but. For starters it has a deceptive image with the ready-to-attack/defend androgynous, plastic Karate person on the cover. The feeling among certain SA rock critics is that the band has been over-feted and under-criticized, leaving them stuck in a creative and directionless rut of their own making.

Rut or not, they are still the most popular and adventurous rock band in South Africa. While there is still that classic grungy mix of hard rock songs and bloody hard rock songs with the occasional slowie, ‘Relaxzor’ takes a while to yield its many delights while still faithfully and enthusiastically tipping its hard hat to the Korn, Limp Bizkit and RATM school of punk thrash. ‘Relaxzor’ is not for the faint-eared and definitely not for those hopeful and dedicated pop fans. Jimmy 12" are just around the corner, so the Nude Girls are in aggressive mood, opening the album with the bicep-flexing roar of ‘Stronger’ just in case anyone’s in doubt. This track alone will scare off all those "headphones at the counters" potential buyers, but will bring a warm glow to the hardy faithful.

But relax sir, these boys didn’t earn their Springbok colours for nothing. Up step some archetypal Nude Girl gems to restore all that lost faith. Arno’s dervish wail riding the ‘Smiley Skull Of Faith’ (John Bonham on dustbins) stomp. First single ‘Unworldly Beauty’ is a slower ballad which welcomes back Adriaan Brand’s trippy trumpet, that Love-era sound that first helped to separate the Nude Girls from the boys. The sound on ‘Relaxzor’ very often resembles ‘Rise’-era PIL, clattering drums and wobbling bass (Oh Jah!), white-hot guitar, and that primal John Lydon wail over the top (so to speak). It’s a big, crisp and clean rock sound and although the album is too long and could have definitely benefited from some objective song-editing, there’s still enough classic Nude Girls material (‘Fist Or The Fun’, ‘Hard Dust’ ‘Schmetal’, and ‘Overdrive’) to please their many followers nationwide and keep the critics off their backs for a while longer. But there is still the lingering thought that the band is capable of a SA rock masterpiece. Till that arrives, ‘Relaxzor’ will keep the fires burning. (SS)
