Over the past few months the Freshettes have been hard at work on a number of new projects as well as overseeing several exciting international deals. The hottest ticket here at Residence au Fresh (not to mention the most played) is the debut album by BLK SONSHINE....a melting pot of Afrikan laced pop fused with soul, elements of blues and jazz, hiphop and folk (I kid you not!). The duo of guitarists/vocalists Neo Muyanga and Malawian/LA troubadour Masauko Chipembere are currently one of the most talked about artists around, their performance at this years WOMAD as well as their opening slot on the Mary J Blige tour have had the critics shaking their collective heads in disbelief...songs like the current single 'Born in a taxi', the hip hop soaked 'Crazy' and folk tinged Sotho ballad 'Bahlalefi' are defining what post millenium contemporary music should be about...great songs, stunning voices and a sincerity seldom felt in music these days. Egyptian Nursery's new single, a remixed version of 'Oyebisi 'nga', is the fourth track from the award winning 'New Anthem' album and despite being ignored by mainstream radio (so what's new ... take a bow 5FM and Metro) further underlines this band's growing reputation as one of the more innovative artists to emerge from the African continent. Currently enjoying great airplay, not to mention stunning reviews, in Europe (via BMG's Blue Flame label) the album had now been picked up by Australian indie DMP and will be released there shortly. Rumour has it that the band will be in the studio shortly recording their sophomore album.
Also hot on the international market but totally unknown on their home turf (prophets without .....) are Cape Town hip hop fusionists Mr.Mann & Pointblank. Picked up by Universal Music U.S. and Toco International, Europe on the strength of an advance copy at this years Midem their debut single 'The Bermuda Triangle' is a potpourri of Cape Flats hiphop mixed with inner city urban beats, an aspiring opera singer and a sample of the baddest mo'fo in the universe, Ludwig Von Beethoven... it`s true! This pumpin' single complete with mixes and an additional ditty titled 'Kiss my Black ass' will be released sometime in the near future. An advance copy to a major national pop station evoked the standard "We don't play this kind of music" response.... mmmmm oh yes!
RETRO
We are proud to announce the birth of a brand new Fresh label.... RETRO ....catering for moi's long and passionate love for 60's, 70's and 80's pop and rock. RETRO will shortly be releasing albums by some of the classic artists of yesteryear including some never available on CD before. Over the coming months you can expect albums by Hawk ('African Day'); Otis Waygood Blues Band ('The Black Album'); Falling Mirror ('Zen Boulders'); Via Afrika ('Via Afrika'); éVoid ('éVoid' & 'Here comes the Rot') as well as a new career defining retrospective of Lesley Rae Dowling ('Conspirare').
Each album will be carefully remastered either from the original analog
tapes or in certain cases from virgin vinyl (where masters do not exist) and come complete with extensive liner notes, rare photos and extra tracks and mixes... not to mention at a good price too! In the near future we hope to bring you gems from The Dynamics, Peach, Tribe After Tribe, Flash Harry, Niki Daly as well as additional catalogue albums from the Mirror ('Johnny calls the chemist', etc), Lesley Rae Dowling (the debut, 'Unravished Brides'), Via Afrika and maybe even some Freedoms Children (if we can convince the powers that be).
Also in the planning stages for this year are companion volumes of Rerooted as well as some new off the wall multi artist collaborations ...Rerapped, Revamped and an unusual Unplugged album......but more about that later.

JORGE CARLOS - LIVE - A DIFFERENT ORBIT
On Sunday night, June 11th, Jorge Carlos will be performing a one-off
solo set at 206, showcasing new and unreleased material, as well as
selections from his successful ‘Trip Of Africa’ album. With a new album
in the pipeline, Jorge has temporarily shifted from the experimental
dance orientated trance of ‘Trip Of Africa’ to explore, as he terms it,
a new "Funky Ambient Groove".
This more relaxed, new sound never strays too far from its trance roots,
but is here anchored by a fixed groove, a sound closer to that in
Jorge’s head, heart, eclectic experience and roots. Mixed into this
multi-instrumentalist’s musical hybrid are elements of Jeff Beck rock
guitar licks, James Brown inspired funky beats, Herb Alpert Latin roots,
Bob James and Stanley Clarke jazz touches, and djembe-based Afro-Latin
percussion.
Jorge Carlos recently completed his stint on bass with Colorfields. He
has played a series of gigs to promote ‘Trip Of Africa’ (which has been
released in Europe), and the acclaimed dance compilation sequel ‘Future
Sound Of Cape Town: The Second Coming’, for which Jorge contributed the
opening track, ‘Dye@Koke’. The next album will be recorded in his new VX
Sound Production recording studios at Sasani at the Waterfront.

STATE OF THE NATION
By now we should all have realized that voting for politicians only encourages them. But here's an opportunity to vote for something that can make a difference. The Winston State Of The Nation concert is now in its third year, and this year this major SA musical expose will be presented in both Cape Town (Three Arts, Saturday July 1) and Johannesburg (Wembley Stadium, Saturday July 8).
The SA-only line-ups for these concerts are decided through a public vote. Whichever acts are democratically selected get to perform at both concerts with full access to top class lighting, sound, and audiences. Last year, Fetish and Nine were the two bands that emerged with the "most likely to succeed" tags. So a showcase of this scale is invaluable to all and any upcoming SA musicians.

THE LATEST GARAGE SOUND TO HIT SOUTH AFRICA IN JUNE
Dance floors in Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town will vibrate to the
latest in international Garage sound at the Solanti’s Sensation over the Youth Day long weekend. Headlined by London DJ, Dominic Spreadlove and MC Creed with local maestros DJ Slender, Mbuso (from YFM), Glen Lewis and DJs @Work (Christos & Da Vinci), audiences are guaranteed a taste of the hottest dance beats. Serial Boyfriend - Frank Opperman and Prime Time Addiction
Not close to what one would expect from a Frank Opperman and Michael Maxwell collaborative album. Give a listen to ‘Serial Boyfriend’s’ stunning acoustic rock tunes with angst, cynicism, humour, power and intelligence. He’s no Sinatra this Frank (so who is?), but he’s got a fresh songwriting touch and a sincere folky delivery. ‘Come Clean’ attracts each time and has picked up some radio play. Pleasantly recommended. (SS)
Lesley Rae Dowling - Clear
So let’s welcome back SA’s own ‘Stone Rose’. Lesley Rae Dowling’s ‘Clear’ album was released late in 1999, probably in time for the SAMA Awards, and won a few, notably one for its very effective cover. Lesley looked as glacially spooked as ever when accepting them, probably not used to the bright lights and big (Sun) city after spending lots of time on the family farm in the Helderberg Mountains above Stellenbosch. She took seven years to release ‘93’s ‘Unbounded Waters’, which rode on the back of local acclaim to garner a UK release on EastWest Records. EastWest waited a few months and then sent over one of their producers to work on the next album. Bad idea, bad chemistry. The project was closed and Lesley took another extended break. She travelled around Europe, cleared her head, learnt how to make wine on the farm, and kept scribbling. She also, possibly, listened a lot to the recent Fetish and Sugardrive albums. Just a guess.
In 1998 Lesley connected with the Jurgen von Wechmar who had produced many of the ‘Alternatief’ local legends including Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart, Springbok NGs and The Led. It took them a while to get the songs out in Von Wechmar’s home studio in Banhoek, and they used a group of local musicians who were a far cry from the A-list that worked on ‘Unbounded Waters’. But the back-to-basics approach and style worked out well, and ‘Clear’ arrived in the "end of 1999" rush. It’s a pity it did so then as this is no hurried stab at the pop charts. The cover certainly deserved its award, Dowling’s turquoise eyes transfixing and engaging from their minimalist, sharp, bright background. And it actually sets the tone for the music inside.
Eleven brooding compositions that avoid the standard verse/ chorus format for altered lyrical patterns, wrapped in some truly strong, sensitive and restrained rock arrangements. Dowling’s growly croon is as emotionally taut as ever, but there’s a new vulnerability in her voice, and a sensuality in her lyrics. ‘Touch’ boldly opens the album with a rock swagger, but ‘Size’, ‘Camp’ and ‘Jealous Heart’ settle things down with their low seductive spark. ‘Clear’ is an absorbing album that simmers throughout, always edgy but rarely exploding. When it does, towards the end on ‘Swimmer’, it feels timely. And then the delicate ‘Quiet’ wraps it all up. Semi-sweet, a little dry, mildly intoxicating. I wonder what her wine’s like? (SS)

WOEMA: VoëL IS WARM!
Voël is een van die warmste verskynsels in die Afrikaanse vermaaklikheidswêreld (as 'n mens bv. die liefdesverse van heteroseksuele digteresse lees) - en nou is daar ook 'n groep met die naam Voël wat 'n great debuut-CD, '34 grade Suid', deur Afrimusik uitgereik het. Volgens beskikbare inligting kom die groep uit Bloemfontein, maar bly hulle nou almal iewers in die Kaap. Die man agter Voël is Werner Carstens (kitaar, sang en liedjieskrywer). Die groep se klank is vars, hulle rock bedonderd op 'n track soos 'Vliegtuig oor die see', en wat veral opwindend is, is dat Voël heeltemal 'n unieke musiekidentiteit het. Van spore van verwagte invloede (soos bv. Kombuis en Swart) is daar geen teken nie. Carstens het 'n sterk, individuele en oorspronklike aanslag. '34 grade Suid' bied 'n moerse lekker luistersessie van twaalf stewige songs -- en een van die beste en vermaaklikste hidden tracks wat ek nog ooit op 'n CD gehoor het! - wat 'n mens keer op keer herhaal wil hê. Dis maklik om verslaaf te raak aan Voël. Enigiemand wat van SA musiek hou, moet vinnig hardloop om hierdie CD te koop voordat die voël uit stock uit vlieg, maar 'n mens wens hierdie groep nog vele ooievaars toe met CD's in hulle snawels.

5.SPOTLIGHT ON... NAGUAL

First there was just Trance, then it became Ambient Trance and now Nagual has developed (what has been termed) Tribal Ambient Trance, a genre that seems to be developing very quickly in the South African music scene of the late ‘90’s/early 00’s. The differences between these genres are not always easy to define, but Nagual’s sound has achieved a personality all of its own. Nagual (an Amerindian word describing “all things that cannot be given a name”) are a Cape Town-based foursome whose debut album has quickly established them, along with Jorge Carlos and THC, as the leading lights in the unique, new live African trance scene. The band was formed in 1996 in Cape Town where the underground trance scene was beginning to emerge. Damien (guitars and effects), Xendrick (percussion and woodwinds) and Derrick (keyboards and programming) had performed in various outfits including Transmission and Earth Dreams, while Chelley added her didgeridoo skills later. The group honed their live trance/acoustic techno over the next few years and appeared at a multitude of parties, raves, clubs and festivals, before approaching their Knysna-based producer, Howard Kenrick-Butcher, to help them develop a more condensed Ambient Trance orientation. The group entered the Eden Studios in the Reenendaal area of Knysna in July 1998 to begin recording their debut album, ‘Shamanarchy’.
The group’s mentor/patron, Dave Alexander, was tragically killed in a car crash on the way back from the Rustlers Festival and the band has remained self-managed since then. Based on the critical success of the ‘Shamanarchy’ album, the band has since begun planning the recording of its second album in a converted garage/studio in Plumstead. Xendrick left to spread the Nagual word in Europe and Lucky joined the group on marimbas, djembes and cowbells to add a more African element to their sound. They also worked with a BBC editor to produce a short video documentary on the band and its music.
The group is styled on the look and feel of the hippie era of the 1960’s but utilizes the techno and trance sounds of the 1990’s to achieve a trippy and ambient direction. The band work best as a live outfit and succeeded in capturing that live sound on the eight compositions that make up their debut album. ‘Shamanarchy’ is a calming and hypnotic album that consistently delivers the basic Trance element of their music while simultaneously exploring a wide range of influences and styles. Here, live electronic music is blended with a variety of acoustic instruments, including marimbas, guitars, didgeridoos, flutes, monochords and African drums and percussion, to produce an album that swirls through one’s consciousness like a musical dream.
The album consists of eight tracks lasting just over 50 minutes. The tracks flow into one another creating a warm patchwork of trance sound, without an obvious single jumping to the fore. From the gentle synthesizer melody that opens the album on the track ‘The Rolling Square’, through to the textured didgeridoo drone of the closing ten-minute track, ‘Perfect From The Very Beginning’, ‘Shamanarchy’ is a trippy and evocative piece of music that offers a new perspective on where popular music will be heading as the new Millennium evolves. It mixes beguiling melodies with a panorama of traditional acoustic and contemporary electric instruments. Standout tracks include the fizzy ‘Transmission’, the ska-ish ‘Cyberdredd’ and the mysterious and mystical title track. ‘Shamanarchy’ is a vocal-free collection of rolling grooves that works equally well (play loud!) as a pumped-up party/dance album as well as (turn it down!) ambient chill music. Nagual’s second album, ‘Sikedelik I’Afrika’ will be available shortly, expect anything and everything.

6.USA FOR SA

THE BEST OF THE BATS
If I were younger, the range of pop and rock styles these guys play would dismiss them as hacks -- mostly because they didn't rock all of the time, and even though 'Shabby Little Hut' is one of my favorite South African pop songs. Now that I'm older I hear in this collection talented guys who can play a range of styles: pop, rock, novelty, classic Tin Pan Alley, and so on.
There are no ethnic selections from their days as Impi. My guess is that music was fine but the audiences were not as...consistent as they had been with the pop sound. If anything, The Bats would fit in more with the British music hall tradition than the American bar band style because the Bats are entertainers. The range of musical styles is also accounted for by the fact that The Bats lasted a while and this is a collection of their work, not a lone moment-in-time album.
I haven't seen the Bats live, and chances are better than fair to middlin' that I will never see them perform, but based on personal accounts and their choices of material, The Bats saw themselves as entertainers rather than just "a band". Proof of this is a rousing version of 'There's No Business Like Show Business' which sounds like their mission statement. Further proof that they were entertainers, aside from entertaining songs and the liner photos that suggest a stage show, is that most of the Bats later went into acting. I'll bet their shows were nothing but fun.
As an aside, South African musicians seem to move into acting careers with some regularity. I can cite a few American musicians who became actors, but citing a few Americans and reading many entries in The History of Contemporary South African Music about a pop or rock musician going into acting are two different occurrences.
Back to the music: the tunes range from mostly melody pop ('Shabby Little Hut' and 'Who's that Girl'), rock 'n' roll ('All I Got'), to outright rock ('Hold Your Head Up'). There are a number of mainstream vocal tunes with a backbeat, songs in Afrikaans, and even a couple of novelty songs ('Fatman and Bobbin' is one). The Bats even have cricket songs on their other CD, 'Not Out', available from One World. 'The Best of the Bats' is mostly pop songs, but contains nice musical variety.
'The Best of the Bats' is a pleasant CD to listen to for the musical variety. Admittedly, the most of the songs are pop. 'The Best of the Bats' is not like listening to Four Jacks and Jill alternating with Battery 9 tracks. Most of the material appears to be original (further proof of multi-talented talented guys). Though 'Hold Your Head Up' is the Argent song, they play it differently enough to make it their version, not merely a cover.
This CD is reasonably priced, and you are assured of finding some enjoyable songs on it, almost no matter what your taste in music.

PEACH - ON LOAN FOR EVOLUTION
This record really rocks. South African's own Siouxie Sioux, Angie Peach, captures all the anger and aggression of the late 70's punk movement. The album announces itself with the 1 minutes 9 second 'Look Sharp' with a roaring guitar and this is quickly followed by the catchy 'A Lot of Things' (SA Top 20 no. 7). 'It's so Luverly' is a brilliantly punky ska tune and which deviates a bit from the pure punk feel of the record. The second side opens with a dark cover of XTC's 'Complicated Game' which is available on the 'Sharp Cuts vol 3' Compilation CD. It's followed by 'Nightmare' (SA Top 20 no. 6) which I think is the standout track on the album with a superb vocal performance by Angie. I do think that Peach ran out of ideas a bit on the last 5 tracks of the second side as they seems to meander somewhat. Still, this side and a half of brillant punk tunes is worth having in any collection. Pity there was no follow up album.

LOOKING FOR LOVE
A friend of mine in Germany has told me that he has heard a brilliant
melodic rock song from South Africa called 'Sister Love' but he doesn't know the group. I know the groups Off The Edge, Little Sister and Stingray but this song is not from these groups. He means that the song is from 1995 or 1996. May be you can help, because I know there are not so much melodic rock groups in South africa.
