SPAMMING

We've had some enquiries from potential subscribers to the Digest,
asking about our subscribers' mailing list, and how secure and private
it is. That is not an unreasonable question these days for obvious
reasons. We have often been approached by "Dr. Spam and the Junkie Mailers" type of groups, and we know you don't appreciate chain e-mails (although, if you send the Digest on to 100 of your friends, you will get lank good vibes from us!!... s'true!). So we are using this small section of the Digest to assure all our subscribers that the Digest mailing list is used only for weekly dispatching of the Digest, and is not made available to any outside parties or interested groups. We promise!

Also plain text e-mails can't carry viruses, so need to worry about that either.

EVAN MILTON TO HOST RADIO SHOW

Besides being the music editor of the World Online home page; writing
and compiling the weekly Cape music column 'Band Stand' in the Cape
Argus; and a respected SA music judge, critic and afficianado, Evan
Milton is now hosting a two-hour radio show on Fine Music Radio (101.3
FM) every Wednesday at midnight.

"Muso Mag", as the show will be known, will be showcasing South African
music - past, present and future. Evan's broad knowledge and taste
ensures this will always be a worthwhile program, but he is also
renowned as a champion of newer acts and sounds across the musical
spectrum, so expect some breaking material and future stars.

A WATERSHED IN SA ROCK

When it was announced that Watershed were to be the SA support act to The Cranberries on their recent three-date SA tour, frowns and alarms went up and off respectively. Unknown new SA act to open for big international group? And who or what were Watershed? Those questions were mostly answered at the concerts when many observers were surprised, and a little impressed, to see far more of the audience (than one would expect), singing along loudly with this band's first single, 'Shine On Me'. It seems this rocky song with the stirring high chorus has grabbed a noticeable amount of radio airplay over the past month or so. And the rest of their set sounded fresh, hooky and tight. So, who are those guys?

Watershed is essentially a duo/band comprising Craig Hinds on vocals, acoustic guitar, piano and pen, and Paul McIver on lead guitar. When performing and recording they draw on the skills of ex-Amersham bassist Nathan Waywell, and drummer Tulsa Pittwaya. The band recently signed to EMI SA and their debut album, 'In The Meantime' will be on the shelves by June. It has 11 tracks and, besides the first single, includes 'Indigo Girl', 'Yesterday Again' and 'Rite Of Time', plenty of material to continue the chart attack.

SUNWAYS

Sunways are due to go back into the studio soon to complete their full length album, THE MOON IS A SPOON. The band received two SAMA Award Nominations for their critically-acclaimed debut release NO MORE HEAVY, and the single VENUS IN HER EYES from the same release was a national and regional radio hit.

Ten new songs will be hitting the shelves soon and the band are busy shooting their third music video, in preparation for the release. Last year the band played The State of the Nation concert, The Easter Rock Festival, Oppikoppi and the Natal Royal Show, as well as numerous club gigs. This year the band has performed at The Southern Cross Festival, Splashy Fen and supported UK group The Mission. Expect to see Sunways at this year's Oppikoppi 2000, Woodstock as well as the Festival of Living Treasures where the band will be performing new arrangements of their songs with a choral group.

Sunways also performed two new songs live recently on DSTV's Draadloos (Kyknet) and played live on Michelle Constant's Saturday SAFM show. Tours are planned around the country this year, including Cape Town. This will be the first time that Sunways will be taking their music to the Cape. Watch the press for details. The band can be contacted at mailto:sunways@mweb.co.za

2.ON STAGE

STATE OF THE NATION

By now we should all have realized that voting for politicians only encourages them. But here's an opportunity to vote for something that can make a difference. The Winston State Of The Nation concert is now in its third year, and this year this major SA musical expose will be presented in both Cape Town (Three Arts, Saturday July 1) and Johannesburg (Wembley Stadium, Saturday July 8).

The SA-only line-ups for these concerts are decided through a public vote. Whichever acts are democratically selected get to perform at both concerts with full access to top class lighting, sound, and audiences. Last year, Fetish and Nine were the two bands that emerged with the "most likely to succeed" tags. So a showcase of this scale is invaluable to all and any upcoming SA musicians.

There are three ways you can cast your vote(s), you can email mailto:vote@realsa.co.za, you can visit the Real Concerts website at http://www.realsa.co.za, or you can phone the 5FM voteline at 083-910-5555. Tickets for the concerts are available through Ticketweb. So drum up some support, get you favourite act on to the Winston State Of The Nation bill, and be there to support them. Do the right thing, make a difference, and party on!

CLEAR - Lesley Rae Dowling

A new direction from Lesley Rae Dowling... powerful, moving songs superbly performed by a band of young musicians and produced by Jürgen van Wechmar.

OM TE BREYTON - Various Artists

A CD of diverse Afrikaans artists performing the poetry of Breyten Breytenbach.

SERIAL BOYFRIEND - Frank Opperman and Prime Time Addiction

Forget whatever you might expect from Frank Opperman or Michael Maxwell and give a listen to an album of stunning acoustic rock tunes with angst, cynicism, humour, power and intelligence. Highly recommended.

PUTONNERWATER - 21 Unreleased songs en Greatest Hits volume 2 - Anton Goosen

The original "Boy van die Suburbs" is still at it after more than 20 years and still doing it well...

SMOOTH AFRICA - VARIOUS ARTISTS

It's difficult to decide exactly who the producers of this collection were hoping to attract. From the sepia bleak landscape cover and bland title one would imagine it was those tourists to SA with too much money and too little time. A quick listen to the contents however brings those MOR SA jazz fans into the marketing glare, sounding as it does like a commercial free hour of "smooth jazz", SA style. But a closer inspection of the sleeve, and a few more listens, begins to make sense of this album. That recent Helmut Lotti album 'Out Of Africa', featuring the Belgian Cliff Richard doing versions of all our sacred classics (so to speak), left a bad taste and a general suspicion of any overseas musical entrepeneurs looking to repackage some SA music for the international market. This album is the brainchild of Dave Love, head of Heads Up Records (USA), who accompanied Joe McBride to Cape Town for the Jazzathon concert and flipped for the local stuff. He returned, lined up the hot SA jazz gang, hauled them into a handful of studios, and released this 12-song collection.

So, how did he do? Well, the quality of the artists appearing here are beyond question. Besides the big names - Hugh Masekela, Jonathan Butler, Jimmy Dludlu, Joe McBride, Pops Mohamed, Andy Narell – the balance are all those illustrious names currently listed under the Sheer Sound banner. There's Gloria Bosman, Paul Hanmer, Gito Baloi, Tony Cox, Sipho Gumede, Errol Dyers, McCoy Mrubata and Robbie Jansen, all working with each other to record these 12 pieces, and the results are pretty impressive. This is "Smooth" South Africa jazz beyond doubt, but not much to do with Africa in general. But these are small quibbles because this collection will charm the pants off both the tourists and those jazz fans with glass tables and swish stereos. But it will also bring many of these artists to the attention of many folk in between. Jimmy Dludlu's delicate 'Point Of View' off his 'Essence Of Rhythm' album; Paul Hanmer's 'Meeting Of The Woman' off his seminal 'Trains To Taung' album; Joe Mcbride and Jonathan Butler's brave attempt to rework Abdullah Ibrahim's classic 'Manenberg'; Gito Baloi's cool 'Cape Vibes Got 'Em', and the evocative 'When Days Are Dark And Friends Are Few' from Sipho Gumede.

To top this all off, Dave Love contributes a song as well, and he's called his lovely trip hoppy jazz piece, 'Smooth Africa', and explains why on the sleeve. Love says: "The perception of dark Africa can only be overcome by visiting the wonderful continent. There is a smoothness that can only be experienced by a visit". So that explains the motivations behind this album, and credit to the "Love" man for getting this recorded and released. It's a strong collection of SA smooth jazz and will give great value to whoever buys it and deserved exposure to all these great artists. Not bad at all for an "uitlander". Pay attention Mr Lotti!

AMANDA STRYDOM - EK LOOP DIE PAD 20 JAAR

Nadat Amanda Strydom die afgelope jare 'n merkwaardige terugkeer gemaak
het met produksies en albums soos "State of the Heart", "The Incredible
Journey of Tinkerbell van Tonder", "'n Vuur gevang in glas", "Vrou by

Strydom se loopbaan soos "My kamer", "Rit deur die lang Karoo", "Rit
huistoe", "Trapsgewyse", "Stoom", die triomfantelike "Ek sal staan"
asook haar weergawes van "Marieke" en "Non je ne regrette rien". Op dié
album met sy 17 snitte wys Amanda Strydom hoekom sy dié Diva van die
Suid-Afrikaanse kabaretverhoog is. Vir iemand wat nie haar vorige CD's
het, nie, is "Ek loop die pad 20 jaar" 'n goeie keuse om 'n sterk
versameling uit haar werk op een CD aan te skaf.

5.SPOTLIGHT ON... SYD KITCHEN
------------------------------------

Still one of SA music’s better kept secrets, Syd Kitchen has been
working the SA live scene since the ‘70s and recently emerged as one of
the Aquarian Quartet, a live collaboration between Steve Newman, Tony
Cox, Greg Georgiades, and Durban's favourite son. This poet/guitarist
with the laconic voice began with the Kitchen Brothers in the ‘70s
before exploring the jazz/rock movement of the ‘80s with bands like
Equinox and Harry Was A Snake. A short solo period followed before the
formation of the seminal Syd Kitchen and the Utensils and their cult
classic, ‘Waiting For The Heave’, and the live album, ‘Oops! Warts And
All’ (both unavailable on CD… as yet!).

Syd then worked with Tony Cox and Steve Newman in the Flying Sombre Ous
outfit and performed extensively nation-wide (both solo and with various
combos) at all the major festivals. Despite his prodigious output as an
artist, writer, performer and producer, Syd Kitchen has still not
achieved the mainstream appeal he deserves. To date, he is still living
and working in Durban and is finishing his Masters degree in Musicology
at the University of Natal.

'City Child', Syd Kitchen’s first CD release, was recorded and released
in 1995 and acquired a popular following thanks to strong word-of-mouth
marketing. Moving away from the protest polemic of his earlier albums,
‘City Child’ is a cool collection of ten, self-penned jazzy, poppy songs
that swing, groove and gnaw their way into your brain. With Syd Kitchen,
Marc Duby and Mike Drake handling the guitar, bass and drums
respectively, it is the flute, violin and viola touches, added by Dave
Tarr, that give this album its sparkling Celtic punch.

Kitchen’s laid-back, yearning vocals add layers to his considered lyrics
and keep this album fresh and un-boring. The title track kicks the album
off on an autobiographical note and is followed by the percussive
‘Shorty’ and the slower croon of ‘Changes’. There’s also ‘Shame’, ‘The
Great Beast’ and ‘Report Back’ to tantalise your ears and brains.
Although Syd’s strengths lie in his biting but lovely folky numbers,
‘City Child’ is a perfect introduction to the mind, music and talent of
this neglected artist. If only ‘Waiting For the Heave’ could get its
deserved CD release, Syd Kitchen could finally achieve the success and
critical acclaim he has worked so hard for. Vinyl copies of 'Waiting For
The Heave' do pop up in 2nd hand stores and should be grabbed on sight.

RABBITT

Pretty music by four pretty guys. I see now why they were adored by teenaged girls, and I hear go-ahead rock songs that the teenaged guys must have found irresistable rockers. I find it all smooth, bouncy, and likeable, too.

Regarding the pretty songs for the girls, the reason I can see the connection now (having bought the CD for a mere R49.99 from One World) and heard it many times through, is that their music is definitely non-threatening, there are no elements of down-and-dirty visceral -- though their version of "Locomotive Breath" rocks nice and hard. Rabbitt is not nasty or aggressive listening, but pleasant rock. I imagine at a show the girls heard pretty songs while watching four pretty guys, and everybody got to dance.

I had expected their music to rock more and somewhat harder, perhaps to sound more consistently like their cover of "Locomotive Breath", instead of halfway between that song and "Charlie", but I'm extremely pleased, not disappointed, in this set of The Hits. In fact, their apparent languid, melodic, ballad manner is misleading, because the majority of the songs are not slow, and some of the slow songs do have uptempo parts, as in "Lifeline", which speeds up periodically, and includes a hot and wailing guitar solo.

Again, their smooth harmonies and apparent ballad manner are misleading, because rocking tunes rip through periodically, usually about everytime I think, "Gee, there sure are lots of pleasant, mellow, harmony vocals songs..." along bounces a mid-tempo or uptempo song, such as "Lonely Loner Too", "Locomotive Breath", "A Croak and a Grunt in the Night", "Morning Light", "When I was Eleven", "Savage" or "Auld Lang Syne" -- in fact, the CD opens with a moving-along rocker, "Hard Ride".

The overall song order on the CD is well paced, and if this is representative of Rabbitt's music, then I'm ready to go beyond the greatest hits package and into the albums themselves -- maybe some label could generate interest with two-fers, two albums on one CD?

The above paragraphs are not to say that their slow songs have no interest, because they do. All of Rabbitt's songs, slow or fast, are full of interesting touches and variety. Pretty rich music overall, replete with a distinctive individual style, smooth vocals, and all the other signs of quality listening -- this was a band of talented members.

This CD was an eagerly-awaited addition to my collection of SA rock, and has become a well-played part of it. Need I suggest that you Play Loud? And what was it y'all used to say? Rabbitt Rules, OK?

JOHNNY CALLS THE CHEMIST - FALLING MIRROR

This is a fascinating album drawing on a variety of music styles from
synthpop ("Automaton Town"), through rock n roll ("Encounter in a take away Shop") to pure rock ("Makin' out with Granny"). The album loosely tells the story of Collette, a girl working in a Chemist in Automaton Town, supplying the local junkies with their fix. She is the subject of Johnny's fascination. "Johnny calls the Chemist" with it's Dylanesque vocals was a big (by Falling Mirror's standard) hit and rightly so. {reached #1 on 5FM-ed}
It is catchy tune with an odd title & lyrics that caught the imagination of South Africans, many of whom probably didn't realise that Johnny wasn't just suffering from a little sniffle and needed some Benylin. Despite it's dark subject content the album doesn't get bogged down in the quagmire of drugs and obsession, but is kept bouyant by the up beat tunes and great guitar riffs (especially Makin' out with Granny). It was probably too clever an album to get mass appeal.

"Johnny Calls the Chemist" and "Makin' out with Granny" are available on the compilation CD "Shattered". If you want to hear the rest of this great album, you're gonna have to find it on vinyl.

SOUND JOURNEY

I will be coming to Gauteng from 15th June to 26th June, with two amazing musicians, David and Casper. We are looking for venues to perform some Sound Journey Ceremonies while we are there. If you would like to arrange one at your home please let me know.

We will have a Marimba, Venda Ceremonial Drums and a Badembau amongst our usual array of instruments.

I have done Journeys for up to fifty people, but groups of between 10 and 20 are nice, depending on the space available. There should be enough room for everyone to lie down. I like to start at between 6:30 and 7:30. The Journey lasts about an hour and a half. There should also be a minimum of 8 people.

Follows is some info about the Sound Journey.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Healing with Sound

Journeying is an ancient technique used by Shamans from many
cultures around the planet. The Sound Journey is one of those
techniques. Niyan creates a space in which one can journey. In this
safe space where the mind and body are simultaneously relaxed, the
Soul can travel. This Soul Travelling is the healing that we need to
experience. The Journey is unique to each individual.

Instruments such as Didgeridoo, Tibetan bowls, Gongs, Chimes, Drums,
Flutes, Rainsticks, Marimba, Badembau and Umbiro are used with voice and shakers.

During the session, you will lie down and Niyan will guide you into
meditation, working around your body with the musical instruments for
about an hour.

Sound is a valuable tool when used in ceremony.
This is known as Sacred Sound.

If you would like to experience a Sound Journey Ceremony, please call Niyan to make an

ASIMBONANGA

Something I was listening to recently which was quite interesting
was a cover of Johnny Clegg's 'Asimbonanga' by Joan Baez. The backing vocals were arranged by Ciaphus Semenya and this adds a great bass voice to the clear strong vocals of Baez. She has a great voice which does this great anthem justice, but I think I prefer Johnny Clegg's version.

11.WHATS ON
--------------

OPPIKOPPI
http://www.oppikoppi.co.za

3-6 August - Northam
11-13 August - Worcester

In South African music the month of August has become synonymous with one word - Oppikoppi. This habit is bound to be strengthened with the first ever Oppikoppi festival to be hosted in Worcester in the Western Cape over the weekend immediately following the bushveld event. This major next step by the Oppikoppi crew comes in answer of an overwhelming call from the Cape for a glimpse of the tunes that have made the festival so famous. The organizers are hoping this could be a vibrant new addition to the activities of Oppikoppi. It is also hoped that the new festival in the Cape will go a long way towards creating a high quality sustainable festival circuit in Southern Africa (One of the express aims of the Oppikoppi organization).

The live music phenomenon now in its 6th year has grown in size and scope to become one of the most relevant and cutting edge showcases of mainly South African music. Moving from a rock based start the festival has grown to incorporate a wide array of music including, rock, jazz, dance, world, cabaret, folk, acoustic and traditional music as well as late night DJ'ing. The diverse nature of the festival has resulted in thousands of music lovers of all descriptions flocking to the festival as an almost spiritual annual pilgrimage.

The bushveld leg of the festival in 2000 will incorporate 5 different stages. These are the Mainstay Main stage, The Gauloises "le Bleu" stage, The Tassenberg Acoustic and Dance stage and the Savanna Jazz & Blues stage. After the success of impromptu performance artists during the 1999 festival, the 2000 festival will also feature a brand new performance art area.

The festival planned for Worcester, will be hosted at the "Kleinplasie" grounds and will be a slightly scaled down "highlights" package of the bushveld leg. At this point it is envisaged that three stages will be in operation: The Mainstay Main stage, a Savanna Jazz & Progressive stage and an intimate acoustic stage. Similar to the bushveld event the scope and scale of the Worcester leg will be nurtured and expanded in future years.

Tickets for both events are available from Ticketweb from 10 May and will be priced at R220 for the Northam leg and R200 for the Worcester leg. Prices include access to all the stages, toilets, showers and camping fascilities. Ticketweb can be contacted on 0861400500 or http://www.ticketweb.co.za.

A great deal of information regarding both festivals will be made available shortly on the Oppikoppi website. A regular Oppikoppi update, with the latest news and information, can also be obtained by subscribing to the Oppikoppi mailing list from the website or by emailing mailto:oppikoppi@icon.co.za
