WHAT'S NEW
------------

KEVIN SHIRLEY

Last week we mentioned some of Kevin's current projects... and Kevin replied...

Thanks for the blurb - actually Iron Maiden's new album is called 'Brave New World', not 'Majesty oF Gaia' - this was a rumour that began when some mail-order people were trying to rip-off fans by selling them a (non-existant) bogus package!

Also, no classic Black Crowes songs made the release ('Live At The Greek') because of a clause in their contract with Columbia re release of recent issues, and as they had just put out a box-set 'Sho-Nuff', including all their albums, they could therefore release nothing!!!

All the best

Kevin Shirley

Visit Kevin's excellent website at:
http://www.cavemanproductions.com

This website has a full discography of all the artists Kevin has worked with over the years, including Aerosmith, Black Crowes, Iron Maiden, Joe Satriani, Dream Theater, Trevor Rabin and of course SA's own Springbok Nude Girls and Big Sky.

Also on the site is a pic of the Council. They were a mid-80s SA band featuring Kevin, Brian Davidson (ex-Freedoms Children), Jock Laing (now living in Knysna) and Dave le Warne.

Take a look at:

ASHTON NYTE

After years of great success and popularity both in the media and with the public, Ashton Nyte, the man behind The Awakening's three albums and two EPs to date, is going solo. Since Ashton Nyte is the sum total of The Awakening's studio existence, one might see this as redundant, but Ashton himself does not. In order to create a clear distinction between his past work in the Gothic genre and his current work that is very much Pop. Treading the glitter-paved line between 70s Glam Rock and 80s Synth Pop, the first solo album by Ashton Nyte, 'The Slender Nudes' will be released on 22 May, with an exclusive launch party on 25 May. The first single, 'Glam Vamp Baby' is already doing the rounds on national and Campus radio.

NOT MY DOG

South Africa's hardest, funkiest hardcore band are busy recording their first full-length album, the follow-up to the massive success of the 'Jack Brown' EP. The album, entitled 'Dogumentary' sees a more mature, fuller sound, produced by Lani van der Walt of Wolmer Studios, and features several cameo appearances from giants of the South African hip-hop scene. Mr Vet of Brasse Vannie Kaap, Hamma of Darker Shades of Phunk and the legendary Ready D all showed their belief in this band by laying down some rhymes and scratching that will feature on 'Dogumentary'. The first single, the heavy and extremely amusing 'Safari Music' is currently featuring strongly on 5FM and Radio Tuks, and promises of an album that will once and for all put Not My Dog in a category of their own.

CONCERT REVIEWS

DAVID HEWITT BENEFIT CONCERTS

For many years David Hewitt has been regarded as one of South Africa’s
finest classical guitarists. His solo albums, displaying Hewitt’s
versatility and sensitive interpretations of the acoustic music of
Africa, are still big sellers, as are his renowned guitar duets with
Tessa Ziegler. For some time now, David Hewitt has been suffering from
the debilitating effects of Alzheimer’s Disease and it was decided to
arrange a series of benefit concerts to raise money for his care and
medical treatment. On May 4th and 5th, the sixth annual ‘Guitars For
Africa’ concerts were performed and all the proceeds were passed on to
Wendy Hewitt, David’s wife.

These two concerts were arranged by The Centre for Creative Arts at the
University of Natal, in association with 3rd Ear Music, and featured the cream of South Africa’s guitar talent, including Madala, Nibs van der Spuy, Ken E Henson, Bongani Sokhela, and Tessa Ziegler. Although these concerts were only available to Durban fans, contributions to the David Hewitt Benefit Fund have been pouring in from all round the country. Those wishing to make a donation to this extremely worthy cause can do so by contacting David Marks <mailto:thirdear@iafrica.com>

WILD GOOSE

Tumbleweeds in Paarden Eiland rocked to the sounds of Wild Goose on Saturday night. This 3-piece band features the stunning guitar work of Jimmy Ray Hawla, the powerful drumming of Brian O'Donnel and solid bass of Toby Tyler. They played a mixture of original rock songs ('It Ain't Fiction', 'Revenge Of The Animals' and 'Clipping Tigers') and covers ('Smoke On The Water', 'Radar Love', 'Knocking On Heaven's Door', etc).

Tumbleweeds owner and bar lady, Nikki, took the mike for a powerful version of 'House Of The Rising Sun' and guest vocalist, Brenda, entertained the small, but very enthusiastic, crowd with a great version of 'Summertime'.

One of the highlights of the evening for me was an untitled blues/rock jam based around Free's 'Mr Big' that even sounded like Pink Floyd in places.

Catch Wild Goose at Tumbleweeds again this Saturday (13th May).

See you there.

SMOOTH AFRICA

Last January Dave Love, president of the American record label Heads Up
International Ltd, visited South Africa with saxophonist Joe McBride,
who performed at the annual Jazzathon event. Love was completely smitten by the music and musicians he encountered on his trip and began planning a way to assist in exposing this music to the international community.

In September 1999, Love returned to Johannesburg for Andy Narell’s appearance at that year’s Arts Alive Festival. He grabbed the opportunity and took Narell, New York percussionist Roland Guerro, and a host of top SA musicians into the studio and produced ‘Smooth Africa’, the newest release on the Heads Up label.

The resulting "smooth" South African jazz collection features, amongst others, guitarists Errol Dyers, Russell Stirling, Tony Cox, Louis Mahlanga, and Jimmy Dludlu; saxophonists Buddy Wells, Robbie Jansen, and McCoy Mrubata; bassists Sipho Gumede, Gito Baloi, Denny Lalouette, and Musa Manzini; pianists Paul Hanmer, Andile Yenana, and Jacob Jansen; percussionists Pops Mohamed, Jethro Shasha, and Rob Watson; as well as guest and solo spots from Jonathan Butler, Hugh Masekela, Joe McBride, and Gloria Bosman. With a star-studded line up like that, one would expect a notable release and ‘Smooth Africa’ is just that and more. (A review of the ‘Smooth Africa’ CD will appear in the next few weeks.)

WOEMA
--------

This week we welcome Theunis Engelbrecht to our editorial contributors
list. Theunis, who was the chief inspiration behind the "alternatief
Afrikaans" classic album by Die Naaimasjiene, will be posting reviews of the better contemporary Afrikaans pop albums appearing on our shelves.

There will also be an updated Woema charts and hot songs list. In
Theunis’ own words: "Woema is 'n nuwe rubriek in Afrikaans oor

SPOTLIGHT ON... DIE NAAIMASJIENE

The story behind Die Naaimasjiene’s cult "concept" album, ‘Die Saai Lewe’, is actually mostly that of Theunis Engelbrecht, musician, poet, author and respected member of the "Voelvry" ‘80s alternative Afrikaans rock movement. He grew up in Bethlehem, a stifling Free State town, and discovered Rodriguez’s ‘Cold Fact’ album while still at high school.
‘Establishment Blues’ inspired him to write his first protest song, ‘Jong Dames Dinamiek Maak My Siek’. He later published two collections of Afrikaans poetry (‘ ‘n Gedig is so onskuldig soos ‘n eier’ in 1982 and ‘Skreeuparadys’ in 1983). He also wrote the youth novel ‘Kinders van die Kierangsee’ in 1985 (later translated as ‘Boys of Summer’ in 1986) and the novel ‘Om ‘n laaitjie te maak’ a year later.

In 1988, Engelbrecht contributed a Warrick Sony-assisted remix of ‘Jong
Dames Dinamiek Maak My Siek’ to Shifty Records’ groundbreaking ‘Voelvry’ album. This song appeared on the album under the alias "Randy Rambo & the Rough Riders". Using the same name, Engelbrecht and Willem Moller later recorded a 12-song album that was to be released as part of a Shifty Records low-priced cassette series. In 1990 ‘Die Saai Lewe' by Randy Rambo & the Rough Riders was released and immediately banned for distribution and possession on the grounds of obscenity, the "kiss of cult" in those bleak times. In 1996, with a new government and consequently a new Publications Board, in place, Wildebeest Records suggested resubmitting the album. The ban was lifted but an 18 age-restriction was slapped on it anyway, furthering the mystique. Some of the original 12 songs received a tweaking while three newly recorded songs and four recent songs were added for the April 1997 CD release on Wildebeest Records.

The band’s name on this CD was now Die Naaimasjiene, a name change based on a chance remark by Jonathan "Radio Rats" Handley. Although a studio project, the "band" did make four epochal live appearances. For his first gig at Houtstok 2 in 1992, Engelbrecht recruited some immigrant musicians from an East Rand punk band to accompany him. No further live work was done until 1996 when two shows were performed at OppiKoppi to promote the CD. For this, and his later concert at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunsfees in Oudsthoorn, he worked with some students from the Pretoria Technichon. For his second concert at OppiKoppi, he added two fat bodygaurds, three blonde showaddy-waddy girls, two bellydancers, the sax player from Dorp and Ampie from Boo on congas and firedancing. Ja, die saai lewe indeed!

USA FOR AFRICA
----------------

Kurt Shoemaker is a Texan who has never been to South Africa, but has discovered a love for SA pop and rock music that started only last year. Kurt will be giving us a new perspective on some of the albums, artist and songs that we know so well, but are brand new to him.

JACK HAMMER - ANTHOLOGY (February 2000, Wildebeest)

Great stuff, perfect guitar rock. More ballads than I expected, but the soaring guitar never fails to sound wonderful. While there are no tunes I don't enjoy, a few do stand out at this point (list likely to change as I listen more): 'January's Son', 'Sarajevo', 'The Fisherman', 'Codename Ruby', 'April', 'Liberty', 'Welcome to Azania', and 'Gypsy Wind'. This is my kind of rock: guitar-dominated, pure and cool music.

I thought 'Welcome To Azania' was powerful before I understood it: that striding guitar, the insistent walking drum beat, the cryptic and urgent lyrics -- but now that I'm beginning to penetrate the real meaning it becomes chillingly powerful.

The whole CD is a pleasure to listen to: Piet's guitar has all the right sounds, the lyrics are thoughtful, and the drum and bass move the tracks along nicely.

In 'Gypsy Wind' the "MoPac" railroad referred to is the Missouri-Pacific Line, and in Austin the highway that parallels it is called MoPac.

CLASSIC SA ROCK
------------------

John Samson has been supplying album info and cover scans to the SA Rock Legends website for a while now. John has written short reviews of some of his favourite classic SA rock albums (and also some pop albums; "Face To Face", anyone?). Every week we will highlight one of John's favourite albums.

HERE COMES THE ROT - éVOID (1986, WEA)

After the runaway sucess of their debut album 'éVoid', the Windrich brothers left SA for London and began work on 'Here comes the Rot'. This album starts where they left off with 'Dance the Instinct' which has a similar sound & feel to 'Shadows', but you soon realise that this is a more mature sound, musically & lyrically.

The album also benefits from a tighter production, but does not lose the essence of éVoid. 'Altar Pop' is a thrashy, punky number that ends the first, upbeat side. The b-side is more melancholic and finds the Windrich's in a more reflective mood. 'Shuffle in the Dust' is a gem of a song. Think 'Taximan' played in a minor chord and at half the speed.

An instrumental track 'Winter' is a sad sounding piece of music that leads into the closing track 'Here Comes The Rot'. Listened to back to back, this is definitely the superior of éVoid's albums. It may not have the catchy singles of their debut, but is a more coherent work.

Get your hands on a copy if you can.

"Well it comes as no surprise
Swimming in a bottomless ocean
Further away from a middle ground
From the place that is my home"

From "Shuffle in the Dust"

This album is not yet available on CD.

Surely not, but if you really must, then just reply to this e-mail,
saying "I'm bored" or "get me out of here" or "I've had enough" or whatever. I'll get the idea, eventually.

"unsubscribe digest" has been known to work too...
