WHATS NEW
-----------
A MOTHER (CITY) OF A MUSICAL WEEKEND
What a weekend it's been here in Cape Town! The North Sea Jazz Festival drew thousands of delighted jazz fans to the two nights at the Good Hope Centre, and all reports indicate that it was successful on many levels. On Friday night a medium crowd at the Three Arts in Plumstead rocked to the Heather Nova/Joan Armatrading/Afro Celt Sound System Womad-offshoot bill, and then went back on Saturday night to catch Shawn Phillips in concert. On Saturday night the FNB/SAMA Awards ceremony was broadcast on SABC-TV, at the same time as the screening of Alanis Morrisette's recent concert in Gauteng, on another SABC-TV channel (who schedules these programs??). So it's now time to catch up on some sleep, and to spend some time reflecting on all these musical events. Full reports on all of these will be forthcoming in the weeks to come.

Included in the lastest batch is the early Uriah Heep back catalogue including 'Very 'Eavy... Very 'Umble', 'Salisbury', 'Demons and Wizards', 'Magician's Birthday' and a completely redone 'Best Of Uriah Heep'. Excellent stuff.

RENE HUNTER
New SA pop-singer, René Hunter recently visited Cape Town to promote her debut, eponymously-titled album. Hunter, a feisty 17-year old, was plucked from her Randburg obscurity by David Gresham who signed her to DGR. She spent two years recording this 16-song album under the songwriting and production guidance of Ziggy and Allan Goldswain. The album is a sprightly pop collection in the Britney/Christine mould and, to date, at least three songs have received radio airplay ('Bye Baby', 'Shut Up And Dance', and 'What's The Fuss About?'). The Africanized version of Garth Brooks' 'The River' is also an obvious future single. Although she has sung with an assortment of smaller bands for a few years, Hunter is a still a comparative innocent in the "big" world of SA pop. She is slightly bewildered by the various reactions and playlisting choices of the SA radio stations, but is determined to prove to David Gresham Records that their instincts about her were spot on and will bear the necessary fruit. She's confident and mature and could just be SA's first pop star of the new century. Hunter also appeared as a presenter at the FNB SAMA Awards ceremony, and her album was nominated in the 'Best R&B Album' category.
The Digest has 5 autographed copies of this CD to give-away, thanks to David Gresham Records.
Name 2 tracks off the René Hunter album and put your answer and postal address on an e-mail to mailto:sarockdigest@crosswinds.net

CHRIS TOKALON - DANCE IN DE LIGHT (MUSIC FOR OUR CHAKRAS)
Chris Tokalon's debut album works on a number of levels and succeeds on them all. A flute and saxophone expert with over 20 years experience in the SA music industry, Tokalon found his musical career beginning to intertwine with his interest in sound as a healing medium. 'Dance In De Light' (subtitled 'Music For Our Chakras') his self-produced debut album, comprises seven pieces of music, each composed, arranged and designed to systematically tune the body's Chakras (energy centres) by utilizing various forms of rhythm, mood, pitching and intention. The album works on one level as a calming and evocative piece of ambient music that would not be out of place in a chill room at a rave. But when listened to with the necessary intent, the music begins to function as something way beyond the normal ambient piece. It in fact becomes more of a healing musical journey whereby the body's main chakras are toned in ascending order, initially as a gentle "awakening" or "stirring", and later as a mantra-like process. Each of these melodies function individually as a complete journey and integrate with the other pieces to achieve a balanced and effective "tune-up" for one's mind, body and spirit.
These musical pieces are all composed of simple melodies and harmonies, performed by Chris on his well-known flute and saxophone. To flesh out the arrangements, he called in his longstanding musical ally and friend, guitarist Greg Georgiades, and percussion maestro Dave Reynolds. Georgiades also plays the oud (fretless lute), alongside the ever-present and hypnotic overtone singing and echoing monochords. The resulting album is a piece of music that defies simple categorization or description. It retains a broad musical appeal while functioning on a far deeper level as an uplifting and therapeutic sound journey. All of these songs operate as functioning parts of the whole album, and doing critiques of the individual tracks is to grossly miss the point. To borrow the title of one of Chris' well-known cabaret-type shows, "Don't tune Chris, he'll tune you!"

NAKED NATIVES
Tomislav (Tomi) Svornic finally got to make his own album, after over two decades at the forefront of the SA pop/rock scene. Calling in favours from musical friends past and present, Svornic, alongside producer Andrew Philip, put together a collection of 10 songs that fizz with invention, style, and a firm grasp of the rudiments of solid pop. Opening track, 'It's Alright', sets the pace with an energetic arrangement and quality hook, with Tomi and Doris Svornic sharing the vocals. 'I Should Have Known Better' is not the Beatles' song, but is still a surging rock song with Robbie Boake's guitar and Bruce Baker's drums adding thunder to the production. 'Call Me' is a slower ballad in the 'Stones tradition, while 'Some People' also conjures up images of the "Glimmer Twins", Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. 'Smile' is a straight-up rocker with Craig Nash's drums powering the song along. 'Anyday' adds a sinister Nick Cave vocal touch to the album and 'Bad News' finds Svornic singing over a minimal backing with only a skittering drum track, Robbie Boake's guitar flashes, and Candice Nel's additional vocals to keep him company. Candice Nel pops up again with the lead vocals on 'Rustler's Valley', the lovely tribute to one of SA's coolest music festivals before the album ends with 'ReCall Me', an alternative drum 'n bass version of 'Call Me'. All in all, Naked Natives is an assured and extremely enjoyable album and is all that we expected from this experienced and talented SA musician, and more!

A BIG NITE OUT
By the time Lenny Kravitz and his four-band supporting bill hit the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, all the minor kinks had been tweaked and approximately 20,000 Cape town fans roared their support for a great evening's entertainment. Lenny was obviously the one they had all come to see, and he played an impressive set backed by his hot collection of backing musicians. His set tended to drag in the middle due to some over-long jamming, but he finished off powerfully with a combo of his biggest hits, 'Fly away', 'American Woman', and 'Are You Gonna Go My Way'.
Fetish drew the short straw and had to open the concert in broad daylight at 5.00, not an ideal environment for their darkish, brooding material. But their short set contained all their better material and Michelle Breeze charmed the already large audience, finishing with her acclaimed duet of 'A Reel's Romance' with Nine singer Farrell Adams. The Springbok Nude Girls completed the SA section of the bill with a confident and rocking set that began a little weirdly with Arno Carstens seemingly singing a different version of 'Bubblegum On My Boots' to that which the rest of the band were playing. But that was soon smoothed out and they paraded their strongest numbers 'Blue Eyes', 'Giant Love Affair' (dedicated to DJ André), 'Genie' before closing with what was announced as "a new song", a solid, punkish sizzler, whose name still remains unknown to Amuzine (any ideas??).
Up next were The Cult who recently reformed (so to speak) after a long break. Looking like Alanis Morrisette flanked by The Edge and the Billy Idol twins, the band tore into their strong back catalogue and Ian Astbury continually goaded the crowd into behaving like a real rock audience. Eventually the crowd responded and the evening's energy hit a new high. Astbury did the diving into the mosh pit thing before mooning the audience and walking off triumphantly. The Goo Goo Dolls are a solid college rock three-piece who achieved huge international exposure thanks to the success of 'Iris' on the 'City Of Angels' soundtrack. They played most of the songs off their 'Dizzy Up The Girl' album with commitment and obvious enjoyment before finishing off with 'Iris', followed by an ill-advised and unasked-for encore of some crappy song that undid all their good work so far. Then Lenny stepped up and the huge crowd went berserk. All in all, a solid "Nite's" entertainment, and hopefully a positive message to the promoters that these multi-band bills are the way to go, provided that there is a decent SA representation on the bill.

éVOID
Last issue Benjy Mudie asked for any info on éVoid's Lucien Windrich.
Well here is reply from Digest subscriber Stephan Forster in the UK:
Hi Benjy
Just got off the phone to Lucien, told him that you were looking to get in touch and he was happy for me to give you his phone number. éVoid play here at the Springbok Bar on Sunday nights - I must make a plan to get down to London soon!
Stephan
-----
The digest also received these 2 e-mails this past week:
I am a South African currently living in New Zealand and have been desperately trying to get hold of some éVoid stuff. I have searched everywhere and your website is one of the few which mentions the band! Can you suggest anything?
Thanks.

I am trying to find any albums that éVoid made, in their brief but wonderful SA career. But, I want them on CD - do you know if this is possible? Were CD's even in this country then?? Who knows. Can you help?

Left for London in 1985. Came back for SA tour in 1986. Changed name to Race Of Tan in 1987 - the line-up consisting only of the 2 Windrich brothers. Currently performing as éVoid at the Springbok Bar in London.

JABULANI IN KENYA
We are writing from Nairobi, Kenya. We are launching a one-hour weekly
radio programme on Kenya Broadcasting Corporation's station Metro FM
that will exclusively feature South African music, art, culture and
entertainment. The programme premiers on 2nd April 2000. However, we
are constrained by the paucity of South African music in town. We are,
therefore, urgently seeking a reliable and steady supplier of South
African music and information about the artists to be featured on the
programme for as long as it will be on air.
Background
Metro FM radio was started four years ago and not only commands the
highest metropolitan audience in Kenya but has maintained the number
one position for the fourth year in a row, according to statistics from
Research International, an independent market research firm. Metro FM
radio transmits from Nairobi to all Kenya's eight provinces on six
frequencies. It is the only FM station that covers practically the
entire country.
On its 24-hour transmission on the station, a variety of music is aired
from all over the continent and the rest of the world but nothing
specific from Southern Africa. It is against this backdrop that
Jabulani has been conceived. The programme will be a rave musical
safari through the sensation and heritage of the Southern Africa region.
The 1980s was a period in which Southern Africa music achieved a
sensational following in Kenya and East Africa. Musical groups and
artistes like Chicco, Brenda , Chimora, Hotline, Steve Kekana, Caiphus
Semenya, Yvone Chaka Chaka, Maitai, Sipho Mabuse, Cheek-to-Cheek, Pat
Shange, Alec O'Khaoli, and many more, became household names that ruled Kenya's airwaves and dancehalls. However the last ten years have
witnessed a musical revolution of sorts in which Central African music
(Lingala) took over the airwaves in a musical storm.
Despite that change however, there is still a large following and
yearning for sound offerings from Southern African as evidenced by the many fans who call the station to request for South African
repertoire. Now we even hear there is Kwaito but, unfortunately, the
few music shops in town do not stock much South African music.
Jabulani, therefore, will not only fulfil the nostalgic memories but
act as the window into the current South African entertainment scene in
dance and song. It will open the way for renewed cultural exchange and
discovery.
We are therefore looking for South African music companies that can
supply:
1. The music for airplay
2. Promotional material (CD's) on the artistes
3. Contact information and profiles of South African artistes.
4. Any other facilitation
The logistical planning of the programme is already underway and the
first edition of the same airs on the first Sunday, April 2. We would
appreciate if you can get back to us to us at your earliest
opportunity. We surely hope we can establish a link of mutual benefit
with you or recording or distribution companies as a back-up to the
programme. That would be the beginning of the promotion of both the
musical legacy of the South and its artistes which will increase the
demand and hence a market for business.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely
David Makali (Producer)
Anne Lemaiyan (Presenter)

MADHOUSE
Hi, I don't know if you'd remember me from my days with Radio 5 (1986-1989) Yes, I did the Quiet Storm, but I did an lot of other stuff as well. Even got a gold disc from Gallo (CBS/Sony/Epic) for 'Outstanding contribution to the music industry'. Now I'm here in the UK with my own radio and TV production company - Madhouse Productions.
Madhouse Productions is in the process of launching a new UK radio station and is looking for new, unsigned bands with original material. (NO covers please). As part of the deal we are negotiating a TV deal which will involve flying one band per week to the UK to record a 'live session' for TV as well as radio. Absolutely any style of music from anywhere is welcome, just send CD's, minidisc or GOOD, broadcast quality tapes to:

Surely not, but if you really must, then just reply to this e-mail,
saying "I'm bored" or "get me out of here" or "I've had enough" or whatever. I'll get the idea, eventually.
"unsubscribe digest" has been known to work too...
