DINOSAUR DAYS
http://www.geocities.com/dinosaurdays

Volume 2 of the Dinosaur Days CD series is out now. Sub-titled 'Classic Rock of Yesteryear' and compiled by Leon Economides with some input from Chris Venter of Universal Music, this is indeed a CD of classic rock.

Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Budgie, Pat Travers, Savoy Brown, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Camel are just some of the bands who appear here.

The obvious hits are ignored however and this CD features some classic album tracks instead. As Phil Wright writes in the sleeve notes: "I'm sure that if you've bought this album, you've got a copy of 'Smoke On The Water' somewhere". Damn right... buy it now...

WILD GOOSE AT TUMBLEWEEDS
Brian Currin

Hard rock is alive and well and living at Tumbleweeds in Paarden Eiland, Cape Town. On Friday night (11 February) this friendly little bar played host to one of the best 3-piece rock bands I've heard in a long time.

Wild Goose features Brian O'Donnel on drums, Toby Tyler on bass and occasional vocals and Jimmy Ray Hawla on guitar and vocals.

The band was scheduled to start at 10pm, but decided to do a warm-up set at 9.30. Most unusual! Opening with ZZ Top's 'Blue Jean Blues' and then straight into a Santana song including a drum solo from Brian!!

"If this is the warm-up", I thought, "I can't wait for the rest of the gig!".

Wild Goose played a stunning mixture of covers and original songs all in the rock and blues vain. I heard the best version ever in my life of 'Knocking On Heaven's Door' and the image of Jimmy Ray's bandana blowing in the breeze through the open door of the pub while he teased notes from his guitar will remain with me for a long time.

They played a wonderful version of a Jimmy Ray Hawla original, 'It Ain't Fiction' which some of you may recognise as an Off The Edge track off their 'On The Run' album. And Off The Edge have recorded another Jimmy Ray song 'Creatures Of Mood' for their new CD, due out soon.

I eventually left at 12.30, rocked out and exhausted and the band were still going to play another set!

So if you are looking for good rock music on a Friday night, then Tumbleweeds is the place to be. Tumbleweeds also serve Thai food including some fantastic spring rolls to help overcome the munchies.

Jimmy Ray has another band called King Rat which is playing at the Troubadour in Kalk Bay on Saturday, 19th February with none other than ex-Freedoms Children's member Brian Davidson on vocals. Guess where I will be next Saturday?

THE JAM SESSIONS/MUSICIANS' NIGHT
2nd February 2000
'keeping music live'

I have been receiving e-mails from musicians who are interested in jamming but live in others cities, and would like to know where they can go. I will encourage and advise any one who wants to start their own club. Mention of the jam sessions will be on 5FM Barney Simons show this coming Tuesday.

Lesley and I visited TUMBLEWEEDS in Paarden Eiland last Sunday night,
(contact Eugene at 510 2164 a/h) and watched 'Nikki-Lee and the Blues Jam' do their stuff. We also met Eugene who runs the place. TUMBLEWEEDS is one of very few venues that supports live music in Cape Town.
Wednesday nights is their JAM night, Eugene says that he puts the musos
together and then has them play on the Friday night 'as a band'. Its a great idea and gives musicians an opportunity to form bands.

The Harbourside Music Club, Kalk Bay have meetings on Wednesday nights
contact Rob at 789 1021 a/h.
The club is an acoustic club more along the lines of folk music, and
similar in way to how the BARLEYCORN <http://www.twisted.co.za/barleycorn> run their meetings with a line-up of performers. Rob tells me that he is thinking of making Thurday nights a jam night for 'electric'.

If any readers are aware of jams/ clubs in their area, Please I would like to know about them.

Recommended venues:

The Abelarde Sanction - JHB:
every Monday night for the Monday Blues hosted by Peter Makarube
some of of the top jazz and rock musos get on to the stage to jam
cnr Fulham and Ripley, Brixton ph 8375832

The Big Tree - Gants Centre, Strand.
Contact Werner Ph (021) 853 5654

Riffs - 21 Church Street, Wynberg. pH 797 0410
Jazz Jazz Jazz....
Jimmy Dludlu and his band play there on Thurdays and Fridays

PLEASE TAKE NOTE: Jam Sessions will now be hosted by 'Glen' at:
The SPORTS POST,
Village Shopping Centre,
Vryburger Ave, Bothasig. pH 5586651
Glen is an avid lover of live music, and complains that he has to travel wide and far to find it!! (tells you something doesn't it??)
Glen is willing to offer discounts for members and "Hey even mentioned
laying on a few snacks!!!"

ISSY FATAAR

Just heard from Issy Fataar's wife that he is in intensive
care in Zurich. He's had leukemia for some time and things are looking poor.

Issy is one of the greatest guitar players this country has ever seen and true to form never received the recognition he so richly deserved.

I'm sure many people out there will want to join all of us who know Issy, in wishing him strength and courage in this trying time. Thoughts also go out to Vreni and the girls, and the rest of the Fataar clan.

BERNIE BROWN

I'm originally from Cape Town, Athlone. I recorded "she's A yum-Yum' with the 'Lunar 5' in 1965.. big hit. Albums were 'Success is the Lunar 5'. Later I went solo and had many hits. 'In A Matter of a moment' composed by Graeme Beggs; 'Sing Out Glory'; 'The Shape of things to come'. Single 'Field of Yellow Daisies' bw 'Hi Hi Hazel' 'Come on Come on' produced by Gerrie Bossman '67.

Anyway, I left SA in 1971 after having worked on the Percy Sledge and Adam Wade Show. Since then I've travelled all around the world including the USA as an entertainer. Been in Australia since 1986 came from Italy.. married in Rome to Dane. Am still performing.

IMPORTANT!! I've just released a kids' album on the net. I'm looking for a release in SA. This is the site http://museek.net/berniebrown
Feel free to look it up and give me feedback.

VINYL TO CD (PART 3 - CONCLUSION)
How to get good CD-R sound from old records -
an article in 3 parts by Bas Mollenkramer

Critical Note

Several historic SA-rock recordings have found their way to CD in recent years. Many of these reissues are of deplorably bad quality. Some releases make no mention of the fact that vinyl sources were used, others at least admit that this was done. All CD's that I have heard could be easily improved on by adhering to the guidelines above. One famous SA-rock/soul album has been reissued many times through the years, even in the vinyl era. Each new reissue claims to be stereo yet they are all poor transfers taken from a worn mono record. And all this goes on while genuine stereo versions of these recordings really exist. Nobody appears to want the bother of going out and finding them.

Conclusions

Transferring beloved old records into the digital CD domain is painstaking work, requiring major footwork to locate the best possible copy of the original record, experience and skill in using unwieldy audio and computer gear and love and knowledge of the original music.

But when it's done well the results are very rewarding. I no longer have to play my priceless near-mint Flames albums. I can instead listen to fine sounding CD's featuring no more clicks, silence between the songs, and continuous play over the four sides of two albums.

Similarly I have single CD of Hawk's 'African Day' and 'Africa She Too Can Cry'. I have all the Otis Waygood stuff on CD. Soon I will make for myself a double CD featuring all three of their albums and their two rare UK Decca singles as bonus tracks.

MINI DISC

Very interesting article on burning CDs from vinyl in order to archive a collection.

I've been doing the same, but with less technique, using my Minidisc
recorder and my Rega Planar 3 turntable.

I've no way of correcting errors or improving recordings, but
notwithstanding the fact that MD discards frequencies audible to only bats and dogs, I end up with a replica of whichever album I've recorded.

It only takes me the time it takes to set up the recording levels and play the album.

With a boxful of MDs bought in Japan during my trip there last year, it's costing me £1 per album.

...and it's great fun digging out the old stuff again!

All the best

REQUESTS

MOUTH ORGAN MAGIC
For a French tin sandwich player, JJ Milteau,
I'm doing a bit of research as a favour:
I would like to know if there are South African
harmonica players who play African and/ or also
traditional SA music of Brit Boer, or any other
ethnic source.

My searches so far have drawn blanks.
Any suggestions?

TRIBE AFTER TRIBE

I was wondering if you could help me find any Tribe After Tribe rarities, as well as Robbi's older group, The Asylum Kids.

Thanks

CIRCUS

Do you know what has happened to Bernie Miller who was the lead singer for Circus? I have tried in vain to try and get a CD of "In the arena". Do you know where perhaps I can find a copy of this title?

{Ed: it has not been released on CD... a real shame.
Cover scan and track details here:
http://www.rock.co.za/files/circus_arena.html }

I saw Bernie doing solo in the 80's. He was then married to a girl from Clout. Her name slipped me now, it could have been Brenda.

{Ed: Glenda Hyam (nee Wassman, ex-Clout and McCully Workshop), see the Off The Edge and McCully Workshop family trees for some more info...

http://www.rock.co.za/files/sarock_family_trees.html

There are also plans afoot for a complete Clout/ Circus/ Hotline family tree in the near future... all input welcome}

I thought he had a good voice. I saw him a lot at a club in Jeppe str.-JHB. If you have some info for me please let me know.
Regards,
Frank.

HELP!

I am looking to find a copy on either cd/tape of Circus Album (Bernie Miller) & 'Help' Album (Hotline). I am looking for the song "Burnout".

{Ed: another great album not released on CD, visit:
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/pjpowers for more info on this and other Hotline albums}

Some friends & I are compiling our top ten local songs of all-time. There will be 5 couples taking part, whereby they will get a chance to play there top 10, starting with no 10 then 9 and so on. Each couple plays no 10 then we play no 9, etc. If you have any ideas/comments that may help us make this a wonderful evening of great SA music please let me know. (Avg age of guests is 38).

{Ed: 33% of SA Rock Digest subscribers are between the ages of 36 and 45 so you are in good company}

So we could expect the likes of Staccatos, Flames, Hotline, Little Sister, Circus, Clout, Mango Groove, Johnny Clegg, Freedom Children, E-void, Bright Blue, etc to crop up.

DAN HILL AND UNA VALLI

Do you have a contact address for band leader, Dan Hill? I need some
input from him on Una Valli's debut album which they recorded in 1964.
Bas and I are working on something (see Flames webpage) to re-instate
Una's image as SA's all time no 1 soul singer.

I believe that life has turned it's back on Una and that she is in complete financial distress. People tell me she lives somewhere in Turffontein. Any assistance to locate this woman will be appreciated.

THE FLAMES

At the instigation of my good friend and fellow collector (train-spotter?) Tertius Louw, I have added a significant Una Valli page to the Flames website.
http://www.the-flames.com

Also new on the Flames website is a real idiot page: 6 different lyrics to 'For Your Precious Love'. Some gentle reader from Durban suggested it. Go nuts!!

THE VIKINGS

Great news about the North Sea Festival. I live in the UK and hardly ever miss my weekend Jazz Fest, you're in for a treat!

I am writing a book about the South African jazz exiles:- Chris McGregor, Harry Miller, Louis Moholo, Dudu Pukwana, Mongezi Feza etc., and wonder if you have knowledge of anyone who could remember an R & B group called the 'Vikings' which appeared at the 'Orange Grove' in Johannesburg in the very late 50s and early 60s. Manfred Mann and Harry Miller were both in this group, and I would be delighted to get any info on it.
