LAST DIGEST, BUT ONE
This issue is the last proper Digest for 1999. The next issue of the Digest (#43) will be a sort-of '"Greatest Hits" compilation featuring articles and stuff taken from all the Digest issues since #1 (which was sent to 15 people on the 27 January 1999).
Watch out for it sometime before Christmas.

ROCKIN' AT THE CAVERN
The 200 tickets for Sir Paul McCartney's first
performance at The Cavern Club since the Beatles last
performed there in 1963, have been one of the most
sought after since the show was first announced this
past week. Now, thanks to MSN and Microsoft Windows
Media, on Tuesday, December 14th at 8:00 P.M. GMT
the world will play witness to the one-time historic event live at

ROCKING THE CLASSICS
Both Howe and Trevor Rabin have contributed tracks to an album of
classical pieces interpreted on guitar, produced by Steve Morse for
Windham Hill.

Petrucci ("Flight of the Bumblebee"), Marty Freedman (Messenet's
"Meditation from Thais"), Steve Howe (Bach's "Chantte 140"), Peter
Frampton (Bach's Concerto in F Minor), Trevor Rabin (Beethoven's 9th),
Dweezil Zappa (Suites from Bizet's "Carmen"), Al Di Meola (Piazzolla's
Tango), Albert Lee (Handel's "Largo"), Jorma Kaukonen (Pachelbel's

ORIGINAL EVERGREEN
The "censorship" of, and subsequent outcry over, the new Original
Evergreen album, 'Addictive Personalities', has, as expected, created a
huge interest in this album and the "offending" track, 'Groupie Bitch'.
With many requests already received for copies of the album, we are
pleased to announce that the band has made copies of the album available to its adoring, and extremely curious, fans. There have also beennumerous requests for copies of the previous OE album, 'Burn The Evidence'. So the band has decided to make a very worthwhile package available to all those interested parties. We Are The Stormers - The Stormers
released in 1999 on a CD single.
The Stormers couldn't take the Super 12 honours despite this rousing anthem. This song belongs up there with 'Eye Of The Tiger' and 'Final Countdown'. Produced by Ron Brettell and George van Dyk (old Circus and Hotline boys) and featuring Robin Walsh on vocals and guitars.

Through With You - The Lemon Pipers
A brilliant slice of late 60s psychedelia from the band that did 'Green Tambourine'.
This 8 minute plus track would not have been out of place on Pink Floyd's 'Piper at the Gates of Dawn' album. S'true.

from 'Autobiography' EP CD released in 1997.
Hard alternative rock - recommended, but not for the faint-of-heart.

SA-born Robbi Robb with Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament play songs to watch camels by.

South African Christian Prog-metal band (I'm serious!). Great stuff.
Mumbo Jumbo - Hawk
from 1974's 'Live and Well' album which isn't "live" despite the title. Stunning guitar solo.
There have been many great South African rock songs this year from the likes of Squeal, Just Jinger, The Usual, Springbok Nude Girls, Sugardrive... to name just a few... but I thought I would point out some of the more obscure tracks that I have discovered this year.

JAM SESSIONS
I grew up in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and started learning guitar when I was 10years old with my eldest brother.. He was a Shadows fan. We had a Gallosteel string beginners Guitar.
I started my first band in high school and played at house parties and weused to get into the Clubs and ask the Bands if we could do a couple ofnumbers.. we were all of 15 years old then..Dressed up to make ourselveslook older i.e. 18.
We used to go to watch bands like HOLY BLACK and Otis Waygood...
The Void.. try and have a jam with them. I only realised some years ago that if you have a band, and you are at a gig, then someone asks you if they could do a couple of numbers with you. Two things could happen.....He could either show you up.. or be absolutely terrible and ruin the wholegig for you... In those days a lot of bands travelled between S.A. and Rhodesia (I refe rto it as Rhodesia, because that was what is was then. Now its Zimbabwe)
I joined the British South Africa Police and signed on for 4 years but never had the time to start a band. I still played guitar and jammed with bands from time to time. When I finished up with the Police I started in bandsagain. Albatross and Pulp. We played at Le Coq D'or,The Savana, The India,and a host of private functions. I also got involved with the Harare Repetary Club (REPS) and played guitar a number of times in the orchestra. Me... a rocker... playing the music to SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS. Good experience and I learnt a lot of guitar chords that I didn't even know existed. The club had a number of rehearsal rooms and that's where the JAM SESSIONS started.. Could you imagine
an orchestra doing Heavy Rock... Smoke On The Water...
These jam sessions grew.. other musicians heard about it and eventually we had alot of musicians coming to the jam. Some were well known, some were novices, beginners, The point was that we were a group of people in one roomall with one common interest... Music.
There were drummers, bassists, Keyboard/pianists, vocalists you name it, some traditional African percussionists also attended one time. The point also was that we all started to learn from each other. The sessions started out as a bit un-organised and everybody just wanting to do their own thing, but eventually we organised ourselves into groups and started workshops, novices with experienced.
Now this is what I want to start up here in my local area. I have organised the venue and I have put up posters inviting musicians to contact me should they be interested in attending. The idea is that there will be sound equipment on stage and all you have to do is plug in and then do your stuff. I am based in Bothasig, Cape Town. Some more info on Miriam Stockley. She did vocals for a UK album series
called ADIEMUS. They released 3 different albums in 1996, 1997 and 1998. All 3 charted in UK. The second one reached Top 20. The third was a bit of a flop unfortunately ... She also did backing vocals among other for LOVE SHINE A LIGHT by Katrina & The Waves which was a big hit single in 1997,having won the Eurovision Song Contest. ONLY YOU by Praise was a one-offsingle with Miriam on vocals, hit the Top 5 in UK in about 1991.

THE BEST OF SOUTH AFRICAN POP
After numerous queries (well 2, actually) about the release dates of
'The Best of SA Pop' CD series, I've put together this synopsis...
In 1993 a 3CD box set (on the Gallo label with catalogue number CDSAPOP 1/2/3) was released in yellow, red and blue packaging in a 3CD slip cover and titled 'The Best of South African Pop'. I originally bought this through mail-order (Leisure Books, I think) in 1994 and it is still a prized possession.
It was released as a companion set to the "History of Contemporary Music of South Africa" book by Garth Chilvers and Tom Jasiukowicz (TOGA, 1994), which I eventually tracked down in January this year. This book partly inspired the SA Rock Files website and which in turn spawned this very Digest which you are now holding in your grubby little paws (oh, you know what I mean...)
Interestingly, the inside back cover of the book gives a track listing for a 4CD set. This 4th CD was only released the following year as disc 2 of 'Volume1' (confused? It gets worse!) For you trivia nuts, the track list also isn't quite the same as the actual CDs. Example 'For You Babe' by June Muscat was replaced by 'Chapel of Love', also by June.
The 3CD set was then re-issued in 1994 as 2 separate 2CD packs titled "Volume 1" (CDGMPD 40485) & "Volume 2" (CDGMPD 40486) and included a new CD released as disc 2 of "Volume 1".
In other words:
Volume 1, Disc 1 = CD 1 of 3CD Box Set (Yellow)
Volume 1, Disc 2 = New Release (Purple) listed in the book as 'Volume 4'!
Volume 2, Disc 1 = CD 2 of 3CD Box Set (Red)
Volume 2, Disc 2 = CD 3 of 3CD Box Set (Blue)
In 1997, the 1994 2CD packs were again re-issued. This time with completely new covers (looking like an old newspaper with a "ye olde English"-style font), but with the same catalogue numbers. A "Volume 3" 2CD pack (CDREDD 610) was also added to the series.
A 'Volume 4' was supposed to be released in September this year, but it never happened.

I've just been all through the Pop Shop pages as created by Rene Mullenders and I must say what a great job he's done in creating a virtual Memory Lane for me...! Superb.
Now how about all those on the list who have some of these old recordings converting them to MP3 files so we can relive them?
I'm not talking about piracy here, I'm talking about letting all of us who used to own these records and have paid our dues in terms of royalties etc(and I used to have a mobile disco back in the 80's, so SAMRO had their fairshare of my profits I can tell you!).
What are the thoughts of the list on this sort of thing? Legal? Immoral?Unjust? Or just plain sentimental?
