MUTANT HARMONY TRIO
Nebula News
There has been a very positive response to the recent 'Song For
Ancestors' album by the Mutant Harmony Trio. This Pretoria-based trio,
comprising Greg Georgiades, Marc Duby and Wynand van der Walt, will be
appearing on the SABCTV program Geraas on Tuesday, November 30, where
they will be showcasing the new video for 'Brazouki',the opening track
on the album.
The band are also considering an offer to tour Oman in January, as well
as the possibilty that 'Song For Ancestors' will be released in the
Middle East and Europe early in 2000. Greg Georgiades, who fronts both
the Mutant Harmony Trio and The Jazzhounds, has been one of the top jazz guitarists in Pretoria for many years. These two bands have made a
string of creditable appearances recently. The Mutant Harmony Trio
performed at the Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Bloemfontein, and will
be playing at the Crossroads Jazz Cafe in Pretoria during December.
These appearances will feature their new drummer, Rob Watson, who will
be replacing Wynand van der Walt when he leaves for an extended overseas trip.
The Jazzhounds appeared at the recent Aardklop Festival in
Potchefstroom, and will be performing at the upcoming Standard Bank Jazz Festival in Kimberly.
Georgiades has also been working with Asish Joshi, and a new album from
this duo, titled 'Samraad', is set for an early 2000 release. The duo
will be performing at the upcoming Festival Of Living Treasures to be
held in Shongwene on December 18. As with the Mutant's album, the
predominant instruments featured on this album will be the oud (fretless lute), bouzouki and nylon acoustic guitar.

SUGARDRIVE
It is with pleasure that we announce that Sugardrive will be the official curtain raiser for the 5FM Alanis Morrisette on her South African tour on the 3rd, 5th and 7th of December.
The tour coincidences with the launch of Sugardrive's website, http://www.sugardrive.com and the release of their CD single "A Single and Some Remixes." The CD single features remixes of the 5FM #1 single "Disco Lazarus" and the current radio single "35 mil" as well as the incredible collaboration with the funk masters, Plum. Plum and Sugardrive spent the day at Downtown studios re-recording the Sugardrive song, "Navelgazer".
The onslaught of the Plum sharp-edged-rock-rap will shock and enthrall listeners and is a historical first as two SA rock bands record a collaboration for commercial release. The CD single will also feature an interactive section which will give fans a personal view into the professional lives of Sugardrive.
Sugardrive's website will feature a full e-commerce section, which will cancel all fans complaints of "I can't find your CD any where!!".

INTO THE NIGHT WE SLIDE - RADIO RATS special CD re-issue
Kurt Shoemaker
We all relate new entertainments (books, movies, music) to similar items we already know, but I can't do that with this album. I cannot think of any performers or groups to compare the Radio Rats to, so I'm left with the conclusion that in rock this is original stuff. Additionally, while possessing a distinctive style, each song is different from the others. The album doesn't sound like the same song played over and over. Many bands confuse style with the repetition of a sound so their albums sound like twelve versions of one song -- but not so in this case. This is fun and original and rollicking rock that doesn't lend itself to analogy. Stand-out tunes for me: "ZX Dan", "Plague Cafe", "I'm In Love", "Rocking", "Mucking About In the Dungeon All Day", "Rocket Road" and "Padded Rooms"-- though I don't know why I mention these songs separately because I usually just put on the disc and let the music play through from the first track to the last.

STING
Well I had seen Sting in concert on 3 previous occasions, 1986 in Sydney Australia and twice later in San Diego. I volunteer for a local youth charity and part of my mission is to aquire autographed items for their annual celebrity auction. It was with this in mind that I stood, armed with 2 new basses, by the backstage door at Sting's show in San Diego. I got there at 2pm. My goal being to get the guitars autographed and hopefully meet Sting in person. The charity I volunteer for is well known and the security and promoters were all really nice, but wouldn't let me or the guitars inside. So I waited along with about 10 other autograph seekers for "the man" to appear. Well after about 3 hours some black vans finally appeared. An entourage, including Sting's manager emerged. I approached him "Hey Billy" (I had never met the man but was given his name and description). He thought I was totally nuts but accepted a letter I had written and said Sting was not there yet but he would see what he could do. Well at around 7pm Sting's limo finally showed up. He emerged and gracefully began signing for all the fans. When he got to me he had a pen in his hand from one of the other autograph seekers and he said "who does this belong to" I replied "I'll take care of it" and proceeded to tell him that I was a huge fan and had a photo taken with me. It was surreal standing and chatting with my longtime hero in person. The basses were eventually signed backstage and I stayed for the show -- which was awesome.
Also last week I was up in LA (another long story) but met this ex- South African Dane Gillibrand. He is part of what appears to be an amazing charity organization. Check out this website. It's a very cool story.

JUST JINGER WOW FRENCH FAN
The new CD of Just Jinger is really cool! The 26th October I saw Just Jinger at the Walkabout inn, Shepherd's Bush, London.
Great gig: The atmosphere was great... They played very good and there was a great moment when it was the drums solo, magic!! I had spoken with Art and hisgroup, they are in good harmony. They are cool...
I think that I was the one French at the gig!! So Art dedicated my three albums and we taked pictures together.
You know, in my opinion Just Jinger is a great group like REM, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eels, Cranberries, Offspring, Radiohead, Nada Surf, Verve, Smashing Pumkins, Everlast... even if it isn't the same kind of sound! But they are better than Blur, Oasis, and boys band like Backstreet Boys and the others...
They merit to be famous when I compare them with many.... groups.
What do you think about it ?
Cheers,
Baudouin Le Normand <baudouin.le.normand@libertysurf.fr>

USA FOR AFRICA
Don't know if I mentioned before that I played a couple of tracks of Big Sky on my "Women In Music" show on KRVM. OK, I know, Steve ain't no lady, but I get away with playing South African boys as a feature called "Leigh's Pics". They got a great response, and I will be giving the "Going Down With Mr Green" CD (the only one I have of his), more airtime in future. Unfortunately, I only have my copy so I can't leave it at the station for the other DJ's to play.
Rodriguez also got a good response, which I think I mentioned to you. Again, it would be nice to be able to play him on the other shows during the day, but that is for record companies and agents etc to decide. The people in this area really enjoy that genre.
It was my first anniversary of presenting the show on Tuesday, and I spent a lot of the time chatting about adjusting to America (it'll never happen!), and playing music that is special to me - so Johnny Clegg's "In My African Dream" got place of prominence! I have a friend from Seychelles helping out in studio, so we were really getting homesick and weepy on air. It was combined with a fund raiser (the station relies on public giving generously to stay on air), and the phone was ringing off the hook. Also played Little Sister and Qkumba Zoo. Guess I'm doing something right!
All for now!
Regards to all and will someone please wave at Table Mountain for me..

MIRIAM STOCKLEY
Not sure whether this qualifies as 'rock' really, but are you aware
that Miriam Stockley (indeed of the Stockley Sisters) is making a good
career for herself here in the UK as a vocalist and songwriter.
She has recently released her first solo album (called 'Miriam' I
think; I haven't heard it); she has also had some success with
a group called 'Praise'; again I haven't heard their stuff). She
also appears on many other artists work.
You can check her out at:
http://www.miriam.co.uk/
I know a few people who have heard her music and say she is
spectacular; so perhaps I should find a copy of the new CD and listen
for myself.
I notice the CD is produced by Glenn Keilis (who also has some of the
song credits), who I remember as a keyboard player in a band called,
I think, Ovation, in the early 70's (in Jhb). I don't think they ever
made any records (just did weddings and barmitzvahs) but I could be
wrong.

MELODIC ROCK
I have tried everything to get more bands reviewed. One band I would really like to review is THE LOUD, but so far they never have been able to send me anything. I am going to check your website later, maybe you can help me getting more info on South African Rock. I would love to get to know more melodic rock bands in the style of OFF THE EDGE. It would be great to give them exposure and review their material. Let me know if you can help me with this.

LUNAR WAVES
My name is Alfonso Algora and I write for a Spanish prog-rock magazine called "Lunar Waves" (very known in Europe). Well, I've just interviewed Rob Granville, a SA musician who plays in a project called Tale with other SA players such as Kevin Kruger. I asked him about a SA band called JESTER and he gave me your e-mail. I am very interested about that band, because the only CD I own is the one called "Through a Weirdo's Eye" and I haven't any more news about them. Could you give more information about Jester and/or the musicians of the band. Have they released more CD's?
Kind regards,

THE DYNAMICS
Well, Life has a way of going round and round. I bumped Jimmy at the
Troupador in Kalk Bay on Friday night. Jimmy is together with Ex-Dynamics Bass player, Rob Whiting, who incidently, has just returned back from a two year stint in London where his band - NO I.D. - had residency in a couple of London Clubs. Rob came back with Girlfriend and NO I.D. Guitarist, Nadia - Ex-Ngoyi, to begin rehearsals locally again for a couple of exiting projects going forward in the New year. Needless to say, Jimmy, Rob, Nadia, Tony, Heather and another guy who`s name I can't remember, cooked the paint off the walls of the Troupador. The Band will will resident there till the New Year. So go check them Out! Good things happening there, I assure you!
Watch the space at AIR for a Review & Pics of Fridays gig at Troupador.

THE CZECH'S IN THE E-MAIL
You've almost compelled me to write something on the significance of Rodriguez' music to me! In fact, I think I will. I'm trying to teach myself HTML and have a fledgling site going. Take a look at: http://malfark.future.easyspace.com/
I go to EVERY concert out here in Prague - in fact, I chose the apartment I'm in because it's only 200 metres away from the Czech Republic's biggest and best venue. Next month - Nick Cave - for the second time. You name them and I've probably seen them! I've started writing up reviews of some of the shows I've been to over the years, and have been posting them to my website. I havn't added anything for a while - I was trying to go through alphabetically! Last concert was The Pretenders. I was front row in an audience of about 250. Chrissie Hynde kept on tossing plectrums at me, and I built up a nice little collection! I have stage "track listings" from, inter alia, The Pretenders and Offspring. I have programmes, T-shirts and tickets from just about everything... going all the way back to to The Everley Brothers' back in Pretoria in the late-60's! I'm a compulsive collector! I guess I'll still be working on concert reports long after I've retired - I see them faster than I can write them up!
Autographs - jeez! I have the B-52's, Debbie Harry, Chris Stein, all the Gereformeerde Blues Band (from the Voelvry Tour)... inc Andre le Toit (Koos Kombuis) and Bernoldus "James Phillips" Niemand, the Radio Rats from 1977/8... when I spent the night with them in a parking garage in Pretoria because we were all so motherless and couldn't afford to pay to get out of the garage!!... Ella Mental (I think), eVoid definitely (concert at the university of Pretoria). I've also been posting scans of autographs to my website, but I'm easily bored, and have not finished.
I have concert photos of Ella Mental and the GBB's. Peter Tosh in Swaziland, UB40 in Gaborone, the Amnesty concert in Harare. Mango Groove at the Free People's Concert. Asylum Kids at - believe it or not - "Verwordburgstadt" (aka Centurion Park). Via Afrika in Margate and possibly the Asylum Kids in Cape Town (Greenmarket Square). Black Sabbath at Sun City. Queen at the same venue. I'm sure that there's more.
Posters? SA bands from the 70's, 80's and 90's. Since moving out here 4 years ago I've acquired dozens from just about every concert I've been to. I've started having them framed, but have unfortunately run out of wall space!
For....security reasons....I won't mention anything about bootlegs!! ;-))
So many things and so little time! Unfortunately for me, most of the stuff is still in SA.
Hey... gotta work! Why do we have to do that???
Excuse my incoherent rambling, and I look forward to speaking with you again.
MAlfaRK PAUTZ

HIDDEN GEMS
Samurai - Dr Jive and The Blue Notes
I bought this seven single (remember those?) in 1982 and knew nothing about this song except that I loved its strange haunting sound and powerful Far-East imagery. Last week, reading through the Off The Edge biography on the net <http://listen.to/offtheedge>, I discovered that Dr Jive and The Blue Notes were a South African band!
Clive Ridgway from KFM in Cape Town takes up the story...
The band was formed and run by my older brother Greg who played
lead guitar and was the lead voice on the bands records. He was very
much the driving force behind the band and produced 'Samurai' which
was recorded at Spaced Out Sounds Studio with Kevin Shirley
behind the desk. My younger brother Tony was the drummer
and I sort of fitted in somewhere in the middle.
Under Greg's direction we played a progressive brand of pop that
reflected our broad musical influences. These included amongst
other styles, rock, blues, country, soul and funk. When Greg decided
to call it a day to focus on film and his other artistic interests,
Tony and I formed a country-rock called Rocking Horse.
-------------
Crazy One - Ramases and Selket
This track was recorded in 1968 by that obscure artist, Ramases (with his wife), who is known in South Africa for his classic album, 'Space Hymns' (remember 'Life Child'?). On 'Space Hymns' is a track called 'Quasar One'. Well, this track is an earlier incarnation of that song. Full of Egyptian-type drumming and flutes this song fused Arabic themes with psychedelia long before Arabic/Western rock fusion efforts like Mike Batt's 'Schizophnia', Page and Plant's 'No Quarter' or Three Fish's 'The Quiet Table' albums.
New Musical Express, March 1975:
They managed to persuade CBS to let them make a single. It was to have been 'Quasar One'. In fact, someone at CBS got his wires crossed and misheard it as 'Crazy One', so they recorded it as 'Crazy One'.
-- Pete Erskine, NME, 15 March 1975 - info supplied by Felix Reut, November 1999
This track is available on the 'Best of Rubble Collection volume 3' CD from Voiceprint records.
