JUST JINGER
Just Jinger, arguably South Africa's most successful rock group, will be embarking on their first national summer tour for over a year. The band experienced some personnel changes with their guitarist, Verny Scholtz, leaving the band on the basis of the infamous "musical differences", and new guitarist Gavin Morein joining Brent Harris (drums), Denholm Harding (bass) and Art Matthews (vocals and guitars) in the new-look line-up.
The Just Jinger tour will begin at Roxy's in Johannesburg on 3rd December and will end in Cape Town on 3rd January 2000. The band will be previewing their new material which should form a major part of their upcoming second album, 'Here's To You', due to be released during September 1999. Scabby Annie became one of the first South African acts to exclusively release their new single on the Internet two weeks ago. Already this route is paying dividends as they now occupy the number one spot on the Digital Cupboard's download statistics. Displacing Yvonne Chaka Chaka, the 'Scabs' have had the most downloads for two weeks in a row! They are also way ahead of recent 5FM number one holders, Sugardrive, whose track, 'I Love You, Discuss', is languishing at number 15! The end of the 90s has seen a number of new albums from the
"Grandfathers of Rock". Last year we had Deep Purple's superb 'Abandon', as well as 'Walking Into Clarksdale' from Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant and Jimmy Page. The beginning of this year saw Uriah Heep's 'Sonic Origami' album and now we see (and hear) 'The Ladder' from Yes (unfortunately, Trevor Rabin left before their last album 'Open Your Eyes') and Jethro Tull's brand-new and appropriately-titled 'Dot Com'.

McCully Workshop

On the South African front, McCully Workshop released 'Buccaneer' last year on their own MicMac label, available on the Indie Music Explosion racks in Musica stores country-wide. Don't be fooled into thinking this is just a re-hashed, re-recorded compilation of old hits. Of the 12 songs on this CD, 6 are 1998 recordings. So if you want to know what the current McCully Workshop sounds like, give this CD a listen. The old tracks like 'Buccaneer', 'Why Can't It Rain', 'Guinevere' and 'Chinese Junkman' get new leases on life while the new tracks sparkle and shine.

MOSES TAIWA MOLELEKWA - GENES AND SPIRITS

Much has been written about this shining new star in the SA jazz firmament since this, his second album, was released on the MELT2000 label. Moses Taiwa Molelekwa was born and raised in Tembisa township during the apartheid years but has risen above the despair of those times to lead the new generation of SA jazz musicians into the new Millennium. He is a pianist of immaculate pedigree and skill and has been acclaimed as the exciting successor to established and inspirational figures like Abdullah Ibrahim and Hugh Masekela. But Moses felt that he preferred to move away from the traditional jazz structures and has attempted to appeal to a wider and more crossover audience, without compromising his roots. This he has done with ‘Genes And Spirits’, an album that welcomes a variety of African, Cuban, Jamaican and Brazilian influences as well as a selection of quality contributors including the Cameroonian drummer Brice Wassey, the Cuban pianist Chucho Valdes, and the remarkable voice of Flora Purim.
‘Genes And Spirits’ is a ten-track album that finds Moses exploring a range of styles while still underpinning these tracks with his fluent and understated expertise on piano and keyboards. It is an album that maintains a traditional jazz core wrapped up in a seamless selection of contemporary sounds, with all the songs being his own, original compositions. There’s the exuberant gait of ‘Down Rockey Street’, the shimmering drum ‘n bass of the autobiographical ‘Spirit Of Tembisa’, the trip-hoppy vocals by Faith Kekana on the opening track, ‘Tsala’, and the repetitive simplicity of the title track. And simplicity is the keyword here. Moses Molelekwa was confident that the emotion, skill and effort that went into this album would be enough to elevate it above many of the other current SA jazz albums. He was right; ‘Genes And Spirits’ rewards repeated listenings with evocative music that will consistently and deeply touch anyone who allows it to.

We are a new Record Label, based in Stellenbosch, we have just released 2 CDS, our first compilation SONVANGER featuring the epitome of Stellenbosch folk namely Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart, Gert Vlok Nel, Gerhard Geldenhuys, Nicole Holm, Eugenie and the Sun Orchestra.
The 2nd CD features DELTA BLUE, a Stellenbosch based blues group. Incredible blues, including covers from Canned Heat, Willie Dixon, John Lee Hooker, Buddy Guy, Sonny Terry & Brownie Mcghee, JJ Cale.

Oom have had a CD out for a while now called 'Beats And Peaces'
which you can get through One World <http://www.oneworld.co.za> and which is really a great album.
The 'Whito Kwaito' song is off the new album, 'No Loitering', both of which are only available at http://www.digitalcupboard.co.za or http://www.MP3.com.
But, I spoke to Ian Osrin (the person behind Oom) and he said the new album will be available on CD in the near future. So I suggest you get the first album through One World and wait and get the new one as well when it is released.

The talk around the table over coffee this morning at the UN mission
in Bangui was about South African music.
Local colleagues from the Central African Republic, with access to
television, watched the Kora awards, and were more than impressed with
Brenda Fassie. Brenda's music (including Memeza) features regularly
(at least daily) on Radio MINURCA, UN radio based in Bangui, the
capital. Last Saturday we featured James Phillips, The Aeroplanes, and
Matthew vd Want. It's true!
I've been asked by a number of locals here (and today wasn't the first
time) why South African artists never perform in Bangui. The only
foreign musicians to grace the stage on the banks of the Oubangui
River are, for the most part, from the Democratic Republic of Congo
(the last concert, and there aren't many, was two months ago by
General Defao and his Big Star Band from Kinshasa).
The time is ripe for a change.
Radio MINURCA broadcasts on 100.8 FM in Bangui, and throughout much of
Africa on shortwave.

9500kHz from 6h00 to 16h00 gmt in the 31 mb
5900kHz from 16h00 to 6h00 in the 49 mb
Bangui is accessible by air via Douala, Cameroun on Air Afrique (also

I had some luck yesterday. I went into Austin, the state capital [of Texas], and
went to a used bookstore and a CD store. In the bookstore I found nice
copies of "The Washing of the Spears" by Donald R. Morris, and "The Great Anglo-Boer War" by Byron Farwell. In the CD store I found copies of Three Fish's 'The Quiet Table', Manfred Mann's Earth Band's 'Somewhere In Afrika', and, a surprise and a thrill, Freedoms Children's 'Galactic Vibes'. <http://www.rock.co.za/files/vibes.html>
Colin was, is, very talented, obviously, and belies the old gag about the typical rock band being "three musicians and a drummer." I enjoy Brian's voice, too: powerful, yet expressive. Julian, excellent guitarist, if muted in the mix. I'll be looking for more of his work. I guess this CD was taken from a vinyl copy. I can promise all of South Africa that if this album is put out on CD in SA from the master tapes, I'll definitely buy a copy. For now, if I ever meet any of the guys from the band then the drinks are on me, even the groupie in the picture. The guilt over buying it is because I would prefer to support the SA scene directly, and because the CD might be a bootleg. But then again, maybe it's not, because the back photo, the color picture on your web pages, is said to have been provided by Brian Davidson. Anyway, it's a great album. The bass really chugs along, especially on 'Homecoming' between the first verse and the drum solo. I see in your poll pages that their other two albums are rated higher. I have a treat waiting for me when I find those two.
Manfred Mann's album, which you are probably familiar with, is from 1984, and expresses the common world opinion at the time. It is more a dance music album, whereas 'Galactic Vibes' was more the chair-boogie sort of rock. Trevor Rabin does a guitar solo on one song, and Third Ear Music gets thanks in the liner notes. A very listenable album. Valerie didn't turn it down like she did Freedoms Children (a testimonial to the power of that group). I lucked into these and feel glad that they are all great music.
I feel I've stumbled onto a great music scene, full of great ideas and optimism.
Off The Edge's album <http://listen.to/offtheedge> is a must-have for me, based on the samples you posted. I love female rock singers, I guess, because I own quite a few albums with female leads, from Heart to Janis to Shocking Blue to...yup: Four Jacks and a Jill. (Not that I'd call Glenys Lynne a "rock" singer, of course. I have ordered a solo CD of hers from One World -- I've made three orders now and feel I can consider myself a regular customer.)
Another question, One World offers an album called 'Die Best Afrikaans
Album in the Wereld...Ooit!' Do you know if it is a mix of rock and folk and pop, or is it mostly on the crooning lounge act side? Naturally, I'd prefer it to be on the rock side of music.

Brahm Malherbe
Museum was formed shortly before Hawk left on their British tour by multi-instrumentalist Keith Hutchinson and myself, after a major dispute with the then Hawk manager (Give me an "F"!).
The lineup was as follows:
Keith Hutchinson - keyboards, saxes, flute, percusion, backing vocals.
Barry Irwin - bass, vocals.
Louis Ribeiro - vocals, acoustic guitar.
Andy Dimitriou - guitars, vocals.
Brahm Malherbe - drums, percussion.
We rented a small farm at Little Falls on the Hills and worked ten hours a day on a classical rock opera written by Keith on the life of the "rapist-killer" - Jack the Ripper (90 minutes).
We played sessions - Florida town hall, etc, (Hi Andrew [King], glad you enjoyed it with us!) and then took "Jack" on a mini national tour - artistically most satisfying I must admit. (Richard Mitchel - Award winning engineer at Bop Recording Studios was our live-in roadie/sound engineer - Well done Richard!!)
Andy had to go back to Zimbabwe to tend to the family business and Museum, finding venues in support of original music scarce, was invited to be resident band at Swaziland's Highland View Hotel and to provide backing for various cabaret artists - I recall one busy evening after we had smoked a little Swazi tobacco and were backing Terry Fortune doing "Bridge over troubled waters", the band got serious giggles and he got so mad he walked off stage in a huff (Sorry Terry - s--- happens!).
After Swaziland, Barry left for L.A. - USA (Where he is well respected - Well done Barry!) and Keith and myself went on to form Razzamatazz featuring:
Glen Veal - bass, vocals (Dropped out of Wits to join the band)
Jeff White - guitars
Assi Delport - trumpet, vocals
Keith Hutchinson - keyboards, saxes, flute , harp , vocals
Brahm Malherbe - drums, percussion
We did another of Keith's fine intellectual compositions, this time an instrumental (Tubular Bells type) classical rock opera titled "The Tarrot Suite" - there being 26 cards in the major Arcano - 26 songs reflecting the mood and colour of each card (That was great Keith!)
Beautiful chicks were hanging around and s--- happens! (Still). We split up - Keith and myself after eight years of crazy rock and roll and all the madness that goes with it.
I took a break and two hoses and travelled the foothills of the Drakensberg for a month - what a rush! When I got back Dave and Mark contacted me and wanted to know whether I would consider a Hawk farewell tour with the original members, as "Joh'burg Hawk" had fallen apart at the seams in England - I gladly agreed because Hawk was a family, not just a band. We took over the basement of the Oxford Hotel in Rosebank and got our touring concert together, while we were earning by running the club ourselves and playing over weekends. What a vibey crazy tour it was indeed. Then we split - the best of brothers. Bound forever by the power---- of rock and roll.
PS There are some amusing rock and roll tales that came to life while touring with Jerico and the Troggs and the stripper and her French girlfriend in Salisbury, etc. etc. that I would like to share with ya all - maybe next time.

A NAARTJIE IN OUR SOSATIE
I just wanted to ask your advice on a trip I'm doing to the US next
month. I thought it would be a good idea to try to distribute some of
the 'A naaartjie in our sosatie' CDs over there, and could take some
over there with me. I have had two responses from the US asking if
there is a US outlet for the album. Do you have someone on the list
who I could contact who would
a) be directly interested in taking some on or
b) who would be able to recommend an outlet?
I suppose a slightly alternative shop or cyber shop would be ideal. I'll be travelling in the North East (from Nashville to Boston) so it would have to be someone in that area.

A BEGINNERS GUIDE TO SOUTH AFRICAN POP AND ROCK ON CD

This will be a regular feature, recommending various easy-to-find
CDs that highlight the history of SA pop and rock music.
This week, 2 great pop collections:
* Quality Moments - Love Songs (EMI, 1999)
* Take My Heart - a collection of love songs (Gallo, 1998)
Together these 2 CDs highlight SA pop music of the 60s and 70s.
6 songs actually appear on both compilations, but that still leaves 37 original tracks between the 2 discs.
'Quality Moments' has 12 Springbok Radio number hits from between 1968 and 1978. If you, like me, grew up in South Africa in the 70s, then this CD will bring back some wonderful memories. If the first waltz at your wedding was Dave Mills' 'Love Is A Beautiful Song', (I know mine was) and you've always wanted it on CD, then here it is. Talking about weddings, Jody Wayne's 'The Wedding' is also included here. Apparently McCully Workshop played backing on this track.
These 21 pop classics, every one an SA hit, are sure to bring some treasured memories rushing back. The Flames, The Staccatos, Alan Garrity, Richard Jon Smith, Margaret Singana, Tommy Oliver, Roy Bulkin and Bruce Millar are all here. 'Quality Moments' has extensive and detailed liner notes covering each artist and track including chart information.
The 'Take My Heart' CD from Gallo has only 6 Springbok Radio number hits, but covers more of the Sixties with some great pop songs from Virginia Lee, Billy Forrest, Gert Potgieter (the Bee Gees 'Words'), Lorne Shields and Four Jacks and A Jill (a cover of Sandy Posey's 'Single Girl').
So, if you want to impress your loved one, or you have finally admitted to yourself that "pop" music has some of the best tunes, then you can't go far wrong with these 2 CDs. Just remember the word "pop" is short for "popular" and there is no denying the popularity of the songs on these 2 compilations.

HIDDEN GEMS
Remember a "gem" is a "hard rock" so here are 3 recent hard rocking
South African gems, some more hidden than others...
Shot - Springbok Nude Girls (1999)
Thumping, pumping 90s hard-rock at its best. A very "busy" song with a lot of stuff going on, and a catchy chorus of "ricochet, ricochet".
From the recent 'Surpass The Powers' CD.
Speed Train - Frankie's Playground (1999)
A thundering hard-rock track in a Ritchie Blackmore style (before the mandolins and female singing and other stuff took priority).
The drumming is incredible (look out, Ian Paice), searing guitar solo (though far too short) and great classic rock vocals. Its not often I get cold shivers listening to a new song...this one is a spine-chiller.

Big Six Blues (alternate version) - Jack Hammer (1996)
Jack Hammer's 'Death Of A Gypsy' CD lists the last track (number 12) as
'Time' with a track time of 4.57. After the song ends we get about 2 and a half minutes of silence and then a completely different recording of the track 'Big Six Blues'. A true hidden gem!
Talking about hidden bonus tracks, the cleverest ones I've ever found are the 2 tracks BEFORE track 1 on the 'Songs In The Key Of X' soundtrack CD for "The X-Files" TV series.
Known as 'The Lost Nine Minutes' you have to rewind back from track 1 to hear...
