Up to 40,000 people are expected to attend '466 64 - The Concert', the 3-hour show (7-10pm) taking place at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday November 29th. The dazzling line-up of international, African and South African artists expected to appear at the Green Point Concert continues to grow. To date it includes: Beyonce Knowles, 50 Cent, Bono, Jimmy Cliff, Ms Dynamite, Anastacia, Queen (Roger Taylor and Brian May), Zucchero, Samantha Mumba, The Corrs, Eurythmics, Peter Gabriel, Yusuf Islam, Moloko, Youssou N'Dour, Angelique Kidjo, Paul Oakenfold featuring Shifty Shell Shock and TC, Johnny Clegg and Sipho Mchunu, Baaba Mal, Watershed, Danny K, Bongo Maffin, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Ready D, and Zola. Sir Paul McCartney is rumoured to be making an appearance as well. Peter Gabriel and Yusaf Islam will perform together in what will be a historical moment in music - Yusaf, more widely recognised as the legendary 70's singer/songwriter Cat Stevens, makes a rare live performance appearance. For Gabriel it will be the first time that he will perform his song 'Biko' - the song written as a tribute to the anti-apartheid activist killed in 1977 - before a South African audience. Sir Paul McCartney was among the first global artists to respond to the 46664 call to artists to contribute new music which would help create awareness and raise funds through 46664's ground-breaking global telephone and web campaign. McCartney's collaboration with 46664's founder, Dave Stewart, the new and original track, 'Whole Life' was recorded at London's famous Abbey Road studios the day after former President Nelson Mandela launched his campaign in London. In a single day Stewart and McCartney wrote, recorded and mixed the song, 'Whole Life', which can now be heard from anywhere in the world only by going to www.46664.com The November 29 concert will be one of the biggest rock events ever staged in Africa and will also be the most widely distributed media event ever, with hundreds of TV and radio partners taking the concert around the world. The concert will be broadcast free to hundreds of millions around the world via TV, webcast and radio. Tiscali will be broadcasting the concert live on the internet, and MTV's Staying Alive are premiering the concert on all MTV channels on 1 December - World AIDS Day - and it will be made available rights-free at no cost to all TV and radio broadcasters worldwide. It is expected to reach an audience of more than 3 billion people in over 90 countries across the world. In South Africa, SABC will broadcast the entire show live. The scope and scale of the concert is already becoming apparent. As the 46664 Concert at Greenpoint Stadium begins to take shape, forty thousand kilos of concert equipment have already been transported to Cape Town by FedEx who have donated their services in support of the 46664 - Give A Minute Of Your Life To AIDS campaign. The '46664' campaign is calling for people around the world to join a global petition via local call-in numbers on which they can hear songs written by contributing artists, contribute directly to the fight against AIDS in Africa, and be directed to the 46664 website to hear more music; purchase exclusive 46664 tracks; download ringtones; make donations and leave their email addresses. The slogan of the '466 64' multi-project (pronounced: "four double six six four") is "Give 1 Minute of Your Life To Stop AIDS" - Dial 082 1 46664 or connect to www.46664.com NOW and Join the Global Petition '46664' The CD and '46664' The DVD are planned for release in early 2004. Proceeds will benefit the global fight against AIDS, and will encourage customers to join the global petition. Tickets for the '466 64' Concert at Green Point Stadium are still available at Computicket and will range from R65 to R450. Gates open at 2pm and the concert starts at 7pm. -------------- SEETHER SA TOUR 2003/4 - MORE NEWS AND DATES South African rock act, Seether, are set to return home after two years touring and establishing themselves in the United States. In that time they have had three successful Modern Rock chart tracks, Billboard Album and Single success, and sales that are expected to reach Gold (500,000) in the USA by December 2003. The purpose of this tour is twofold. Firstly it represents a homecoming for the band as they say thank you to South African fans for their continued support over the last two years, hence their preference to play concerts where they found their fans originally. Secondly, these concerts will conclude their touring of their first album as the band are preparing to enter the studio in Los Angeles in mid-January to begin work on their second album. Original SA band members Shaun Welgemoed and Dale Stewart have now played over 475 concerts along with band members Pat Callaghan and Kevin Soffera. SA audiences who supported the band when still called Saron Gas will now be rewarded by seeing the band in venues that they frequented when they were living in South Africa. Shaun Welgemoed explained the reasons for the tour: "We really wanted to return to our roots and show our American team just how advanced the SA music scene is ... and we wanted to prepare ourselves for the recording of our second album, due to start in Los Angeles after our return from SA. Our musical base will always be South Africa and we thought a tour would be the best way to prepare ourselves for the new record." SA bands Soul Proxy and Faultline will support the band on the tour. One of the Cape Town gigs will be an under-18 concert. The band will not be playing for a fee other than on New Year's Eve and have agreed to take their revenue from door sales only. This is unusual, and a special dispensation from the band to us to make the tour possible. The Seether Tour itinerary is as follows: 29th December 2003 - Blue Moon - Nelspruit 31st December - 5FM Festival - St Francis Bay (New Year's Eve) 2nd January 2004 - Mercury Live - Cape Town 3rd January - Mercury Live - Cape Town (afternoon under-18 concert) 4th January - Mercury Live - Cape Town 7th January - Wavehouse, Gateway, Durban 8th January - The Roxy's - Johannesburg 9th January - Sin Bin, Pretoria 10th January - The Doors - Johannesburg For more information and ticket bookings contact Musketeer Records on: (011) 463 8876 or 082 457 5711 LISTEN http://www.SAmp3.com/artists_l_s.html -------------- OPPIKOPPI FESTIVAL - PRETORIA/TSHWANE Friday 28th & Saturday 29th November 2003 This year's Oppikoppi "city festival" is an even more progressive shift left-wise, following 2002's well-received makeover. Apart from the headline acts many artists on the bill can be described as groundbreaking, ensuring that this year's festival again falls in a league of its own. The new venue at the Pretoria show grounds is the perfect setting for a variation on the OppiKoppi festival theme and a wild start to the South African summer holiday season. The two-day celebration begins on Friday the 28th with pop and rock line-up and progresses from there into break-beats and electronica on a dedicated 206 birthday stage. Saturday morphs into a Phat Hip Hop, House and African rhythms line-up including a titanic Harambe set with all the exciting new faces of urban South Africa. Apart from these broad focal areas, the festival will throw in abundant dashes of performance art, comedy, physical theatre, street theatre, short films, home grown beats and electronic art. Among the artists appearing are: Brenda Fassie, Max Normal, Skwatta Kamp, Tumi and the Volume, Godessa, Carlo Mombelli and the Prisoners of Strange, Wambali, Tamara Dey and the Boys, A Blunted Stuntman, Boo!, Beef (Netherlands), The Boogieman, E-Quad (Netherlands/ Zimbabwe), Flip Kowlier (Belgium), Mabulu (Mozambique), Rise, The Narrow, 't Hof van Commerce (Belgian Hip Hop crew), Ultrasonic (Belgian DJ), Wambali (Malawi), and Zampano (France). mailto:info@oppikoppi.co.za Tel: (012) 346-2011 www.oppikoppi.co.za for daily updates and news flashes. -------------- SUMMER PARTY IN THE KLOOF Kloofendal Amphitheatre is situated in the Witwatersrand koppies west of Johannesburg and is an ideal venue for an all-ages Summer Party. On Saturday 29th November, a selection of top SA bands will be there to entertain fans from 12h00 till 22h00. Barney Simon will introduce the bands and keep the patrons entertained in between live acts as the day's MC/DJ. The line-up includes: Mean Mr. Mustard - South Africa's most popular live tribute and pop/rock band with a string of original hits under their belts, including 'Buttercup', and 'Secret Places', the title track off their best-selling album. Tweak - One of SA's most exciting punk rock outfits, the young band have broken attendance records at their shows and their second independent release is rumoured to have reached sales figures of around 25 000. Wonderboom - Rated by the South African public as one of our best bands, Wonderboom is committed to creating songs which will carry them over the seas to international markets - proving that South African artists do have great musical talent. They brought life to classic South African songs such as 'Charlie' and 'Johnny Calls The Chemist' as well as releasing their own album of hits. Nianell's staggering 3½-octave vocal range will fill the Amphitheatre and captivate both man and beast at the event. She has won several music awards including the prestigious Crescendo prize for 'tone setting' and has performed as far afield as Ireland, Belgium, Botswana, and France. Also performing will be retro's Onyx, newcomers Belljar and Summersalt, as well as The Finkelstiens, currently South Africa's fastest-rising pop/rock band. The Finks have been described as a tight, energetic, melodic, fast-paced rock outfit with modern influences. Tickets cost R80.00 at Computicket (courtesy Sovereign newsletter) -------------- 'D-RATED' - THE DUNCAN FAURE STORY Legendary SA rock star Duncan Faure and Nationwide Airlines recently joined forces to film a Bio-pic called 'D-Rated - The Duncan Faure Story'. The project is a combination of live music concerts - due to take to the road from February to April 2004 - and the filming of a 52-minute music video special. With locations in South Africa, the United Kingdom and Europe the video production takes an overview of the life and times of the Pretoria rock guitarist/keyboardist who shot to international fame and stardom as a member of two super-groups, South Africa's Rabbitt and Scotland's Bay City Rollers. Neil Hetherington, the creative director of Creative Media Projects, told the Digest that CMP are currently in the early stages of production of 'D-Rated'. At the end of November the crew, Duncan Faure, and his entourage will move to Europe and the UK for filming. They will be shooting more scenes in South Africa, Kenya and Mozambique from mid-January until end April 2004. A series of television specials will also be produced at this time and the 'D-Rated' production will air in the USA and worldwide in July 2004. Last week Neil Hetherington and Creative Media Projects completed the shooting of a new video to promote Duncan Faure's new single called 'This is the Christmas'. Karen Zoid, Amanda Strydom and ddisselblom were the multiple winners at the prestigious Geraas Afrikaans music awards, which were presented last Monday evening at Gold Reef City's The Globe Theatre. Sponsored by SABC 2 and Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoër Onderwys (PUKKE), GMT, which honours the country's leading Afrikaans musicians, performers and their achievements over the past year, kicked off in dramatic fashion with a risqué encounter between hosts Geraas presenter Jacques Du Preez and Belboks presenter Eloise Cupido as the two locked in a Madonna/Britney-esque kiss. The real drama, however, was provided by the awards themselves, which proved that not only is Afrikaans music in a healthy state, but it is as creative and inspiring as ever. Karen Zoid was the dame of the night as she walked away with the most awards with her album 'Chasing the Sun', collecting GMT's for the prestigious 'Album van die Jaar' award, 'Beste Rock Album' and 'Beste Liedjieskrywer' awards. Zoid, who led the nominations pack with five, lost out only to Amanda Strydom who, with her album, 'Verspreide Donderbuie', picked up the 'Beste Solo Kunstenaar' award and 'Beste Volwasse Kontemporêre Album' award, an award she also won in 2001. Zoid and Strydom were joined on the multiple-winners podium by folk pop group ddisselblom, who won 'Beste Duo of Groep' and 'Beste Musiekvideo' for their song, 'Bang'. The evening was not without its surprises as Joe en Jaco walked away with the 'Beste Pop Album' award for 'Wie's jou Pappa?' ahead of fellow nominees and favourites Juanita du Plessis and Kurt Darren. Another surprise, perhaps, came in the 'Beste Nuweling' category with talented newcomer Jak de Priester taking the award ahead of favourite Gian Groen. The announcement of the awards and the ensuing celebrations were superbly complemented by the event itself, which included performances by Anna Davel and Steve Hofmeyr. Davel, who was unlucky not to walk home with an award having received four nominations (second only to Karen Zoid) showed no disappointment as she entertained with passion and flair, singing the title track of her critically acclaimed album, 'Gypsy'. Veteran rocker Piet Botha and performance theatre group Stok, a powerful team of musicians and percussionists, consisting of Wouter van de Venter, Jahn Beukes and Leon Ecroignard, added to the entertainment, while ddisselblom showed The Globe audience just why they were amongst the evening's top winners. Perhaps the highlight of the evening's celebrations, however, was Sonja Herholdt's performance of the much-loved song, 'Ek Verlang Na Jou', performed in a jazzed-up style that highlighted the artist's creativity. "As expected the GMT's was a roaring success. Everyone present was impressed by the standard of Afrikaans music and the obvious growth in the industry. SABC 2 congratulates all the winners, but at the end of the day it's us - the listeners, the ones who buy the CDs and watch the music videos, who are the real winners. Thank you to Geraas, the GMT's and most of all the artists for bringing us this superb event," commented Aletta Alberts, General Manager of SABC 2. New SA label, 'Open Record', were pleased with the evening's results. Open Record boss Ross Campbell said: "Jacqueline Stecher won the Geraas Award for 'Best Design' for Alex Van Heerden & Derek Gripper's album, 'Sagtevlei' - fantastic news for Open Record! So much went into the design of these albums and I was really hoping we'd win this one. Congrats also to Roxanne Spears for her huge contribution with the overall package layout and logo across all the albums. 'Sagtevlei' was also a nominee for 'Best Classical Album' (a rather dubious category), but they didn't have a 'Best Sort Of Jazz/Vastrap Crossover with Classical Leanings' one.' Enkeleen's 'Ek Is Legio' was also a nominee for Best Electronica/Dance Album. Belboks, SABC 2's interactive Afrikaans music show, had a live broadcast from the stage of the event, giving their viewers the first opportunity to see some of the nominees arriving. Those that don't want to miss the glamour and drama can catch the excitement on SABC2 with a GMT special on December 18 at 21h30. Entitled 'National Conference on Cultural Tourism', this conference aimed to look at the potential of cultural tourism as a means of attracting greater numbers of tourists focusing on its impact on the economy, job creation, and status of the city/region/country. It targeted politicians and decision-makers. While the conference put forward a range of key issues, the follow-up on the ground has been low. In 2002, Sheryl Ozinsky of Cape Town Tourism attended the International Cultural Impact conference in Liverpool and returned to start a process to develop a similar conference in Cape Town together with support from Mike Van Graan of PANSA (The Performing Arts Network of SA), with the hope of influencing both strategy and policy in Cape Town and the Western Cape. In 2003, the Cultural Impact Programme was established through the partnership of British Council, The GrandWest Cape Culture and Heritage Foundation and Cape Town Tourism. So what is the Cultural Impact Programme? Cultural Impact is a series which examines the way in which cultural tourism can be a powerful force in stimulating regional regeneration and growth. It consists of a series of discussion forums addressing various issues specific to interest groups and works towards an international conference in late 2004. Views on the importance of cultural tourism vary significantly and this series sets out to quantify just how important a subject and practice it is, especially in a regional context. Culture in its broadest sense will form the springboard at this series for information which proves invaluable to tourism organisations, cultural institutions, government bodies, academics, investment and planning agencies, architects and urban regeneration practitioners looking for imaginative ways to capitalise on the economic potential of the region's cultural assets. Cultural Impact asks the big questions in tourism today: What does cultural tourism actually mean? Can the tourism and the economy in Cape Town and the Western Cape be improved by developing policies and strategies for cultural tourism? Can culture really lead to urban regeneration? Is there any point in having a cultural marketing strategy? How important is it to develop the capacity of gateway airports? Are their any tangible long-term benefits of being the capital of culture? What has architecture got to do with tourism? Who says sport and culture don't mix? Can music, fashion and club culture positively encourage tourism? How much does film and TV influence, for good or bad, cultural tourism? Can expertise in cultural tourism be exported? Selling culture and tourism-How important is the need to market the concept? From mid October 2003 - late 2004, a series of discussion forums will take place at Artscape On The Side once a month. These sessions will focus on specific interest groups and issues: e.g. performing arts, cultural mapping, an events calendar for arts and culture, Literature and cultural tourism. During the process a set of stakeholders will be developed and some issues problematised. The sessions will also look at developing possible strategies and "products" which will ensure its area to find a connection with cultural tourism. These will be documented and made available. In late 2004 an international conference will be held which will take forward the notion of Cultural Tourism and its impact on society drawing on previous work done in the country and internationally. Sessions in 2003: 8 December An Events calendar for the arts: Cape Town is a highly creative city with events taking place on a regular basis. Yet, we are either spoiled for choice or have no choices at all. How do we programme our city so that we are always a destination for great events held over a period of time. What would be appropriate mechanisms and how do we programme what is happening already in the city so that it makes the most impact. Events are dependent on people and entities putting them on and the session will also look at independent producers in the city and their impact on the city. Examining the social and economic impact of events in the city. The international conference in late 2004 will involve a range of players and will have opportunities for stalls and marketing. Proposed topics for forums in 2004: Firstly, Music in Cape Town: Music is the heartbeat of a city and Cape Town is the home to many musical styles and traditions dating further back than 350 years, and with a range of hybrid forms thereafter. This fresh, musical treat features a whole range of guests, giving it a loose, varied, hoedown kind of feel. There's Frank Opperman on one track, and Barbara Tellinger also sings a bunch, as does Gary Herselman (GBB, The Kerels), who co-produced the album with Willem Moller. Gary (bass) and Willem (guitar) originally played together in Die Gereformeerde Blues Band. Gary wrote the songs for the Blomkrag album with Neil Fishwick, who was the drummer from the first Kerels line-up. Willem Moller is one of SA's finest guitarists, and has appeared with Rodriguez, Nataniel, and Big Sky. Willem has also produced a long list of top SA acts and albums. The recording of the album became a kind of reunion for some of the well-known names from those crazy '80's. Fellow GBB cohort, Jannie "Hanepoot" van Tonder, popped in to arrange horns and play trombone on two tracks, while David Poole helped out on saxophone. Mark Bennett, from The Softies, Cherry Faced Lurchers and Hip Replacements, took the mike for two songs as well. Michael Simpson, from Instant Lawn, sang one, as did Tonia Selley who fronts The Pressure Cookies and was the girl behind the mike in Khaki Monitor. Other notable names on the album include Cliff Armstrong, ex-Acoustic Kitchen, who played some acoustic guitar - and Greg Leisegang from Scooters Union who swung the piano accordion and played some keyboards as well. Dylan Quiroga popped up with the headache powder, which is not what you will be needing when you buy this album. It's for good moods, but it gets sad. It rocks and it swings and it shows even more influences besides Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and Nick Cave. But, despite all of these influences, it still sounds like Blomkrag, the stuff that you put in your head to feel right. The lyrics are right on the button and it's all very organically recorded. It sounds like a band - and you'll realise that you haven't heard that for a while! The CD comes complete with an eight-page full colour booklet that contains all the words for your heightened listening pleasure. On your second listen you'll be singing along! And... "Blomkrag" is Afrikaans for "Flower Power" ... the Summer Of Love 2004 starts here, I guess! [DS] -------------- MIRIAM MAKEBA - 'LIVE AT BERN'S SALONGER, STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, 1966' [GALLO] That's a particularly longish title for this newly released Miriam Makeba live concert recording from 1966. But it is an important one as there is a fascinating story behind the first release of this CD on the Gallo label. By 1966 Miriam Makeba was already a star who had ventured far from her "discovery" in the cultural melting pot suburb of Sophiatown in Johannesburg in the 1950's. She gained attention with, amongst others, the Manhattan Brothers (kings of the period with their African-jazz marabi style), the all-woman group, The Skylarks, and the musical 'King Kong' in the late '50's. When cast as a shebeen singer in the film, 'Come Back Africa', her invitation to attend the Venice Film Festival for the film's premiere in 1959 was among the origins of her passage. A chance meeting with Harry Belafonte resulted in his becoming her mentor. Between them they won a Grammy Award for their album 'An Evening With Belafonte & Makeba' in 1963. With her hula-hoop style of dancing and Xhosa intonations on songs such as 'The Click Song', the Miriam Makeba look and sound began to attract magazine covers and audiences all over the world. According to the CD's sleeve notes by a Swedish gentleman called Alec Holm, Miriam Makeba performed for the first time in Sweden at the Bern's Salonger in Stockholm from January 17 to February 28 in 1966. For these performances she was accompanied by Sivuca (guitar and accordian), Leopoldo Fleming Jr (congas) and William Salter (bass). In 1967 this concert was aired on Swedish Television. Alec Holm, then 18 years old and an avid admirer of Miriam Makeba, recorded the show from the TV transmission. Fast forward to 2002 when Miriam Makeba was in Stockholm to receive the Polar Prize. Alec Holm decided to make a copy of that 1966 concert soundtrack, which was still unreleased, and presented it to the South African singing legend as a gesture of his gratitude for "the joy she had given me these past 30 years" as Holm explains in the sleeve notes. Alec Holm remembers well the moment when Miriam Makeba received the copy of the CD, and is very honoured to be a part of this historical release. The 'Live At Bern's Salonger, Stockholm, Sweden, 1966' CD has just been released on the Gallo Records label and features 16 tracks from that performance including 'Mbube', 'Click Song' and 'Oxgam'. A video of Miriam Makeba performing the track 'Chove Chuva' off this CD was flighted recently on SATV. It showed the young, gorgeous Miriam Makeba singing that sultry salsa track, clad in the same body-hugging leopardskin print evening dress that she wore for that legendary performance and on the cover of the CD. No wonder Mr Holm became an instant fan! You will too, if, for some reason, you aren't already! [DS] -------------- SPOTLIGHT ON: OPEN RECORD - "THE SOUND OF MUSIC" Mick Raubenheimer takes a long, hard look at Open Record, a new SA label with a unique agenda, and discusses its intriguing roots. No one is sure where it began. As early as 1917 Erik Satie's new ballet 'Parade' caused quite a stir with its frolicking bleepwork of sirens, pirouetting typewriters and lottery wheels a-curtsy - a riot ensued; a recuperative two decades passed before Edgard Varese unleashed 'Ionisation', a percussion-from-hell monstrosity with bigger and better sirens (not a ballet) - more riots. A little to the side John Cage could be seen violating the fragile harmonic nervous-system of his grand piano by inserting screwdrivers and rusted bolts into its intestines. What were they after? Round about 1916 the Original Dixieland Jazz Band had unsuspecting audiences squirming in seats with their members inventing new melodies and asserting them over and into the anticipated song-structures. A year later their hugely successful vinyls would popularise the then-fledgling form Jazz - that 'idiom' of music that has contributed more than any other to freeing music from the shackles of prescription and predicate and into her own skies. But all this was no more than an obscure premonition: It would take a clenched handful of decades for experimental classical music to be regarded as more than a contradiction in terms, and that raw passion Black-American jazz was soon glad-wrapped into stale formulae for the neat delight of coffee-table generations. All this has changed. The fertile energy unleashed by these original frustrates has found its ground and soon the very skies will be dancing to the tune of their own mad ephemera. All around the world a new music is coyly undusting itself, smiling shyly into the millennial dawn as strummed by the disparately intertwined likes of Aphex Twin, Badly Drawn Boy, Bjork, Kalahari Surfers, Looper, Radiohead, Tortoise and myriads squirming snugly with them in the alphabets of sound. For the first time a music is being embraced, and therefore funded, the stylistic parameters of which are being defined (or hinted at) by nothing but the given composer's idiosyncratic whims and wit. And not only in that infinitely wealthy vista of humanity we idealise as Overseas lads and gems - there is something delightedly South African swooning itself on our very own shores thanks to the pioneering balls and womb of a company called African Dope (the unabashed champions of local madness) and now a mysterious new label aptly scribed Open Record. Open Record has deliciously unveiled itself through the simultaneous release of four artists anonymous to the scrutiny of South African music at large (with the relative exception of Benguela, who have released a disc of discretional repute elsewhere). Recognisable only by a trademark halo of circles embossed on their cardboard-sleeved covers and the sheer anonymity of the artists (save, ahem, you-know...), Open Record is offering rare and wonderful fruit indeed.. Joined by nothing but a passionate relation to the muse and original expression of their affairs with her the artists spotlighted create their own psycho-cosms of sound, of the beauty they experience in and with music. And it tells. Each disc has an individual voice, tapestrying the involved composers' experiences in note and beat. The music is as gratifying as the energy which promotes it: free-floating (or thumping, or scampering, as applies...) between the instruments involved it is above all music emancipated from categorisation, the only code applicable being the artists' obvious love of and intimacy with their medium. These are not folk who settled with the traditional compromise of establishing themselves commercially in order to facilitate their art through side-projects. Instead they've been tinkering in the shadows, honing their art and biding their breath. Which is why Open Record should be sent Christmas greetings and good cheer all year round. For grand and voluptuous exhalations these are, and may they inaugurate new breath! He grew up in Bethlehem, a stifling Free State town, and discovered Rodriguez' 'Cold Fact' album while still at high school. 'Establishment Blues' inspired him to write his first protest song, 'Jong Dames Dinamiek Maak My Siek'. Theunis later published two collections of Afrikaans poetry (''n Gedig is so onskuldig soos 'n eier' in 1982 and 'Skreeuparadys' in 1983). He also wrote the youth novel 'Kinders van die Kierangsee' in 1985 (later translated as 'Boys of Summer' in 1986) and the novel 'Om 'n laaitjie te maak' a year later. In 1988, Engelbrecht contributed a Warrick Sony-assisted remix of 'Jong Dames Dinamiek Maak My Siek' to Shifty Records' groundbreaking 'Voelvry' album. This song appeared on the album under the alias "Randy Rambo & the Rough Riders". Using the same name, Engelbrecht and Willem Moller later recorded a 12-song album that was to be released as part of a Shifty Records low-priced cassette series. In 1990 'Die Saai Lewe' by Randy Rambo & the Rough Riders was released and immediately banned for distribution and possession on the grounds of obscenity, the "kiss of cult" in those bleak times. In 1996, with a new government and consequently a new Publications Board in place, Wildebeest Records suggested resubmitting the album. The ban was lifted but an 18 age-restriction was slapped on it anyway, furthering the mystique. Some of the original 12 songs received a tweaking while three newly recorded songs and four recent songs were added for the April 1997 CD release on Wildebeest Records. The band's name on this CD was now Die Naaimasjiene, a name change based on a chance remark by Jonathan "Radio Rats" Handley. Although a studio project, the "band" did make four epochal live appearances. For his first gig at Houtstok 2 in 1992, Engelbrecht recruited some immigrant musicians from an East Rand punk band to accompany him. No further live work was done until 1996 when two shows were performed at OppiKoppi to promote the CD. For this, and his later concert at the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunsfees in Oudsthoorn, he worked with some students from the Pretoria Technikon. For his second concert at OppiKoppi, he added two fat body guards, three blonde showaddy-waddy girls, two belly dancers, the sax player from Dorp, and Ampie from Boo on congas and firedancing. Ja, die saai lewe indeed! The patchwork of poetry, anti-establishment rants, 'kewl' tunes and other madness that is the album 'Die Saai Lewe', is best described by briefly quoting the liner notes. Above the list of people not allowed to listen to this album and alongside a copy of the 1997 semi-unbanning letter from the Publications Board, is this sentence: "'Die Saai Lewe' is nie 'n konvensionele pop- of rock album nie. Dit is 'n psigedeliese soap opera in negentien episodes". Says it all, but what does it sound like? It's certainly not conventional rock but it has a rich and deep (sometimes gloomy) presence. One of those albums for rainy nights, candles, red wine, and that fresh bankie. The album's basic theme reflects its creator Theunis Engelbrecht's alienation from the Afrikaner way of life in the '80's and early '90's. He also preferred adding music and "soundscapes" to his poetry instead of publishing them for students and academics, a similar situation that pushed Koos Kombuis into his musical career. Here, in tandem with guitar and studio guru Willem Moller, Engelbrecht touched on a wide selection of styles (blues, rock 'n roll, folk) and a strange brew of sounds and samples to create one of the most original, absorbing and enjoyable SA albums of the nineties. Ruben Samuels (drums) and Jannie "Hanepoot" van Tonder (trombone) played on some of the tracks, and Spiral Staircase, a band from Pretoria, worked on the four new tracks that were added later. Songs? I'm not even going to mention or describe any specific songs, it would do this "konsept" album a disservice and spoil the surprise. 'Die Saai Lewe' is a 19-song, old and new South African album and is a valid music snapshot of an important political, historical and personal era in SA rock history. 'Die Saai Lewe' Tracklisting: Die Saai Lewe, Raai-Raai, Liefling, Warmsoet Lemoen, Girlfriends In Die Wimpy Bar, Jong Dames Dinamiek (Maak My Siek), Pulp Friction, Manlief, Die Generaal, Bring Die Sherrie, Elegie, Kwela Vir Mandela, Ek Gaap, Se 'n Gebed, Jy Is A Leë Huis, Waar Is Alles Heen, Aai-Aai, Ek Verlang Na Jou, Die Reen Is Hier BUY http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=WILD002 [SS] -------------- THE ZAZONE.COM SA BAND SPOTLIGHT http://www.zaZone.com LAD, the dedicated webmaster of zaZone.com, throws his regular spotlight on one of the many SA bands currently affiliated to his SA music site. LUNA Luna, who hails from Stellenbosch, has a refreshing style of music, which is a cross between folk, blues and light jazz. She carries the crossover between genres very well. Her band is made up of Luna on vocals, keyboard and occasionally guitar; Barry Steenkamp on bass; Tinus Van Dyk on lead guitar and Francois Kruger on drums. Luna found out that she could sing at the tender age of 12. She used to sing soprano in the choir and had a sort of angel-like voice, not at all like she sounds now. Her grandmother bought her a mic for Christmas and she plugged it into her mother's Hi-Fi and sang along to all her albums. The first song she "sang", which made her realise her abilities, was 'I need a hero!' by Bonnie Tyler. The first major sighting of Luna was in an Afrimusik production called 'Eve: women in the garden of song' where Luna performed alongside Lesley Rae Dowling, Laurinda Hofmeyr, Eugenie and Nicole Holm. Luna toured with the 'Eve' production, appearing at Aardklop 2002 and KKNK 2003. Then in early-2003 Luna hooked up with Francious (Springbok Nude Girls), Barry (Akkedis) and Tinus and this new line-up began performing at various events and festivals. I saw Luna play at the Lemon Connection in Cape Town recently, and was really impressed by her style of music. It was relaxing, yet captivating. In particular her song called 'Lullaby' is a song which will give you chills listening to the words. It describes how a young mom feels after obviously having to give up her baby... it's a song that could bring a tear to many an eye, it's excellent -- you must hear this one. Her gigs are not all sombre though, and move from the sad to the bluesy/jazz feel quite easily. Don't expect hard bass lines and snares here - it's a relaxing, soulful trip down a jazzy, bluesy road which leaves you feeling awakened. Luna's performance is, in a nutshell, emotional and heartfelt with great soothing melodies. Luna and her band have also released a 7-track EP, which was recorded at the Sunset Recording Studio in Stellenbosch. The CD is only available at the gigs. Luna has performed at various events and festivals, including Wingerdstok 2003, KKNK 2003, the Cederberg Festival 2003 and Oppikoppi. You've already missed a large portion of her tour, but can still catch her at the Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory (alongside Plush) on 25/11 and at the Harbour Music Club in Muizenberg on 26/11. Then she will be at the Big Blue Cafe on 6/12 in Melkbosstrand (call 021-553-1932 to book). Luna will also be performing a solo gig on 11/12 at the Dorpstreet Theatre in Stellenbosch; and then at Distrix in Cape Town on 12/12. The cover charge is R50. VARIOUS - 'RE-ROOTED: BEATZ FROM THE GROUND UP' [FRESH MUSIC - COTCD-024] From the title one might think there's a whole lotta thumpin' goin' on here--but there's more to this album than a rhythm machine making bass music to annoy one at a red light. The CD starts with the jazzy 'Seven' (7 Year Itch Shooz Remix) by Tananas and closes with Sugardrive's 'Girl You Make Me Bad', an easy song to listen to. In between Tananas and Sugardrive is diverse music linked by steady beats and varying tempos. Some songs are pleasant background wallpaper and don't get in the way of doing or thinking, which can be good--but they won't offend Miss Grundy, either, which can be bad. Some are danceable tunes, which for 'Junk City' means repetitive, but the Fresh Music folks have packed great variety in under their "beatz" title, and, for all I know, most of the eleven official languages are here. RSL's contribution is a neat male chorus akin to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, but with drums and jamming, followed by Baba Do singing in one of the official languages of modern Jo'burg, interspersed with towering rock licks. Dubious 101 gives us a raving techno number, 'Stable Riot (Flaring Nostril Remix)', and a western civ beat, 'Dragg' and 'One'. So before the CD is half over we've hit four or five genres. Egyptian Nursery contribute the darkish electro 'Learning to be Healed', followed by Naked's strangish 'Wash Your Hands (Stone Cold Remix)', then my favourite, the rock-edged 'Energyroots', followed by the slammin' 'Dusk (Nexus Mix)' by Light Year featuring Billy, the soulful 'Noyana' by Herman Tladi, and then the aptly titled 'Funky 'n Loose (Mystic Marimba Mix)' by The Original Evergreens. Lots of musical variety, but the unifying beats theme prevents jarring, as Producer Jay Savage made a CD easy to enjoy played loud, and one easy to play softly for rhythmic ambience. And check out the liner noted for scads of musos whose work we know well. So chant "Yebo, china!" a few times, and dance physically or mentally to cool songs that satisfy and thump. READ http://www.fresh.co.za Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com -------------- 5.A NAARTJIE IN THE UK London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music: ANTON GOOSEN - 'BUSHROCK' With all that was happening in London this last week, I was scouring my collection for something about which I could write 'This sounds like Bush meets Queen in the Palace Brothers living room'. However I couldn't find anything that was grungy in a slightly camp rock, alt.country kinda way so I listened to Anton Goosen's 'Bushrock' instead. This album is probably about as controversial as the recent visit of Dubya as it is subtitled 'A White Kaffir of Africa'. The song by that name starts with a spoken piece explaining that the Arabic word 'Kaffir' means heathen or non-believer and that we are all heathen (or Kaffirs) to someone else. The sleeve notes go on to explain that this was an attempt to kill off the word. After having probably caused a good deal of his local listeners to turn off this CD, he focuses his guitar on much bigger fish with 'The Whole Wide World Hates America'. If nothing you've got to admire him for speaking his mind. Or should that be singing his mind. So yes, this album is political, but you don't often get as political this musically cool. The songs are drawn from both the sakkie concertina sounds of Boeremusiek and the lively marimba and township sound to create a relaxed, feel-good sound. There's the bouncy reggae chorus of 'Heitha Mr. President' and the joyous 'Cape Town Groove' to get you tapping your feet to. This is tempered by the quieter acoustic 'Red Rainbow Lament' or the sunset in the bush sounds of 'African Day'. Musically this is an exciting and quite lovely album and deserves a listen purely for this reason. While a strong album in itself it seems to lay the ground for the later 'Vis In Die Bos' which personally I would choose over this for listenability, however it's a tough choice as 'Bushrock' is the more lyrically challenging. With numerous Monty Python phrases in the sleeve notes and the decidedly African flavour to the music, one can be forgiven for thinking that Anton wants us to always look on the braai'd side of life, but it's deeper than that. I guess whether you like this album or not will depend on whether you like your shrubs George W'd or Tony G'd. The song was sandwiched between two Tommy's. The local Tommy (Oliver) was charting with his debut single. 1978 saw Marshall Hain enjoying a third week at the top. As in 1973, a local Tommy was making his presence felt. Tommy Dell's 'Teddy Bear' was no relation to Elvis', but was rather a sentimental country tune based around the old CB Radio and a whole bunch of truckers all rallying round a crippled boy whose daddy had died. Puts a lump in your throat it does. Toto Ceolo washed down their cannibals with some coconut milk as they enjoyed their 2nd top 5 hit of 1983. Billy Joel had not charted since 'You May Be Right' in 1980, but 'Tell Her About It' had made top 5 and re-established him as a major recording artist. The song was from the album 'An Innocent Man' which made number 7 on the SA album charts. In 1988 Yello made history by becoming the only Swiss act ever to top the SA charts. In fact never again would a Swiss and Hawaiian act occupy the top 2 spots. Kylie's previous effort, 'Got To Be Certain', had just failed to make the top 5, stalling at number 6. However in November of 1988 she was back with the Little Eva standard, 'The Locomotion'. Rod Stewart was back (again) in the top 5. Of the 3 other Stewarts only Dave Stewart made top 5 (alongside Barbara Gaskin with 'It's My Party'). HOG HOGGIDY HOG -'NAKED' - THE LAUNCH OF THE NEW SINGLE First the Gig review... Whenever the Hogs play at the Turtle, there are always so many people there that it is very hard to move, and this being the launch of their EP 'Naked', I was expecting nothing different. So when I arrived just before Vol took to the stage to open I was surprised to see quite a sparse crowd and I thought this was perhaps due to the venue changing so near to the date. Vol were a kind of metal/hardcore band with a hint of System of a Down in them. It was their second and last show because their drummer is emigrating so not much point in me talking about them but to say it's sad to see another SA musician leave our shores. When Incorruptus, the next band, started, the crowd had grown and I spent most of their set doing a sort of Irish jig thing because, with the addition of a violin in their line-up, Incorruptus sounded a bit like Flogging Molly and doing an Irish jig seemed to be the thing to do. Then the almighty Hogs took control and thrashed out their usual tunes. George taunted the crowd saying that they weren't going to play 'Naked' even though it was the single on their EP. They also played that very popular song about Sean's mom, 'Crack Wh*re'. I was so hot and sweaty after the Hogs (it must have been about 30 degrees in there) that I had to sit down to watch Tonight We Die, plus I didn't feel like joining the pit and getting punched. From what I heard they were sounding good and Wilbert looked mean on stage. Ultimately it was a good evening with not as small a crowd as I thought when I arrived, must be the Hog's incredible aura. I then went home to listen to the Hog's new single which I thought was not going to take me very long since it only had a single and two live tracks on it. What I failed to realise was that the videos that were included on the CD were going to be highly entertaining. The videos were meant to be released on the now infamous 'Hogumentary', but we never got the 'Hogumentary' because some plonker destroyed half of the footage that was meant to go on it (that's what George told me anyway). So anyway, the kind boys from the Hogs decided that they would put the remaining footage onto this CD. My favourite one by far is the 'Flag of Freedom' video that was filmed live at the Riot in The Mad House concert. But enough about the videos now and back to the actual tracks. Obviously the best track on the CD is 'Naked': it is a brilliant song that is set to become the Hog's next anthem. Then there are two live tracks included on the CD - 'Peter Wino' and 'John & Philippp's song'. Mr Boss from the "Rudies" does a guest appearance on 'Peter Wino' and you can plainly hear Pete from Half Price shouting "Sean Sean Sean Seaaaaan" during the sing-along in 'John & Philippp's song'. 'Naked' is very well recorded and it does its job in making you want more... well if we want more we are just gonna have to wait till the Hog's next full-length album, which will hopefully be coming soon. [DN] -------------- FUZIGISH SA Punk also received this message from FuziGish who are currently touring Europe: Hello From Fuzigish... Hello SuiD afrikA... Well all is rocking and skanking out here in Switzerland. We had three shows and they been cooking. Swiss are made to skank. This is like a ska mecca of some sort and Fuzi has been getting good feedback. Our biggest show was at the Skaladdin CD launch last Saturday, with about 1000 people at the Beer Hubbel. It's an amazing club and Frank Black is playing at it this weekend. The sound/lighting is really top class. So it was a fat ass evening and Skaladdin's new CD is mighty fine. Anybody want? We also got put on the guest list for "The Toasters" show in Zurich last night, and they are a great band live. Kicked ass. Ok well tonight we in Austria at Komma. Its a club in the middle of snow-covered mountains where some other bands like Sepultura, Biohazard and Overkill have played. Looks like it will be kick-ass. If you're not aware, we have a new drummer on board. He be called Lee and he has been featured in Cosmo Man many times. Anyways things are rocking and Fuzi is still kicking out fat ska beatings. After the obligatory bubbly apple juices, glasses of red wine and highballs of clear iced whisky, it's obvious the theatre is filled to capacity. People whisper as they come in and find their seats. The mourning is a thing you can taste in your throat. But it's alluring. Jana Cilliers and Grethe Fox give us elegant and accurate verbal utterances of his angry words, his deep lyrics, and his life. Their bodies swathed in dark evening wear are sometimes tense, then relaxed, then animated as the heated words find their way through them to us. Behind them a visual display of the man called Ralph Rabie, Johnny K, Johannes Kerkorrel. The images blur, move erratically in front of the quiet crowd, the faces and hands of the dead man tinged in a desolate shade of blue. On the stage a set of drums, a row of microphones in front, a piano, and three guitars in flavours of Gibson and Fender to the left. The words fall from Jana's lips. She gazes upward, her regal features serene and entrancing. Grethe blends in with a seamless grace, her shoulders curves of porcelain in the spotlight. A figure walks in the darkness behind them to the guitars. He picks up a guitar. It's Valiant Swart. The crowd erupts in sounds of surprise, joy and respect. He smiles into the light, starts playing "Revolusie", and the quiet comes. As it does with every song. As each artist materialises from the back into the hungry white beam of light, the applause drowns the song's first few notes. It cannot be helped. It's Amanda Strydom. Sleek and stunning in black, eyes bright with unspent tears. She sings "Ek Het Gedroom" and Floors Oosthuizen's guitar is with her every step of the way. She closes with a catch in her throat - "... dat jy altyd jonk en vry sal wees en die lewe jou nie brand." It's hectic. We scream for her in unified longing to dilute her pain, we scream for the song, for the art, for everything that lives forever. Out steps Karen Zoid. Her band ready and able. And sweet Mother of Medusa, they give us "Sit Dit Af". The sound is a monster, Karen in the mike, Karen in our heads, Old PW Botha with finger aloft, the rhythm a dark thumping of rebellion and anger behind your breastbone. She moshes, her hair a golden torrent. "Sit ..." and moshes, "dit ..." and moshes harder, "AAAFFFFF!!!!" and the applause explodes. Same with Stef Bos. He takes the piano chair, quiet and unassuming, but fiercely passionate in sharing his grief. His voice clear, the words cloaked in memory. He sings "Hillbrow" and the frantic images of a lost world are depicted with sober empathy on the wall. Junkies, slummed sidewalks, hobos, Fontana, a young prostitute in a bright pink halterneck, Estoril Books. I shiver as Kerkorrel becomes alive in each note. In Stef's "Pilgrimsrus", in Valiant's quiet but harrowing "Kleinmond Koebaai", Karen's throaty dark rendition of "BMW" and the insane "Foto Teen My Muur", in Amanda's version of "Hoe Ek Voel", in Janine Neethling's crystal fingers from the throat of her piano, then, next to Stef Bos, the accordion a muse beneath her hands, in Stef and Amanda's intense "Taal Van My Hart". I want to cry but the cold lump in my throat stays put. In my head the sense of loss is a cold dead hand grasping for life. Then it's Karen, Valiant, Amanda and Stef on stage. The current standard of this stunning country's artists right there in front of us. Their feet start to shuffle the rhythm. Valiant grins, Amanda takes Stef's hand. Karen looks at us, pulls the mic closer. And they sing "Halala Afrika". We're stunned. Out of these four people the voices blend into a tangible tribute, passionate and warm, from within the roots of this place, while Amanda with a quiet "Thula thula, Mn'tanami..." takes the grief to a distant place. They finish in a breathless "hissshhhh, hissshhh" and in a heartbeat we're on our feet, the shouts and cries from our guts, there are tears and yells from hoarse throats, unadulterated appreciation in the hands that clap and clap and refuse to stop - and the artists bow. They bow, and turn around. They join hands, look up at Johannes Kerkorrel's face on the wall and the song begins. He stands somewhere on a mountain. He looks into the sun and he sings. "Al lê die berge nog so blou ..." and the lights around us dim to a twilight shade. "Sy woorde sal ek steeds onthou." Johannes Kerkorrel. We will remember your words.
