SA ROCK DIGEST ISSUE #217 http://www.sarockdigest.com Established 27th January 1999 15th September 2003 ---------------- EDITOR'S NOTE ---------------- Due to the large amount of info that we try to find place for on the Digest each week, we’re usually a bit short of space for an opening lengthy editorial. But this week we do have a tricky trivia question for you! We know that Hugh Masekela had a big US hit with ‘Grazing In The Grass’ in 1968, but please tell us which two well-known international rock songs featured Hugh Masekela on trumpet as a guest artist (on the one he was name-checked in the song as well!)? Email your answers to editor@sarockdigest.com?subject=quiz140903 The first correct answer will get a year’s free subscription to the Digest! If you miss any issues of the Digest, then you can still read each week's Edition, in full colour, online at http://www.cd.co.za (updated Tuesdays). You can also find all the previous editions of the Digest archived at: http://www.sarockdigest.com/archives The deadline for Digest submissions and SA gig info is Friday 12 noon. If you would like to contact us, please do not reply to this newsletter! Rather send an email to mailto:editor@sarockdigest.com?subject=Digest Thanks! The 23-minute movie was directed by Justin Cohen and produced by Tyrone Lipman. The two Johannesburg film students wrote the script and shot the film on a very small budget in Johannesburg in 2002. ‘Looking For Jesus’ stars SA actors and features original Rodriguez music on the soundtrack. The film has already received limited screenings, including at the recent Short Film Festival at the Cinema Nouveau in Rosebank in Johannesburg, and has also been slated for possible inclusion in the upcoming Motor City Film Festival in Detroit, and Sundance Festival 2003. ‘Looking For Jesus’ - Movie Magic Channel 5 on DSTV on Tuesday night, September 16, at 11:20PM (23h20). The documentary is a tribute to this talented, respected and still very missed South African artist, who passed away tragically and far too prematurely with so much music, humour and wisdom still left to offer the SA music world. James Phillips’ three albums released on the Shifty Label were ‘Sunny Skies’, ‘Soul Ou’, and ‘Made In South Africa’ (his greatest hits album released after his death in 1995). As his well-known alter-ego, Bernoldus Niemand, James Phillips also released: “Wie Is Bernoldus Niemand”, and featured on the Voëlvry Tour, alongside Johannes Kerkorrel and Koos Kombuis, and on both subsequent live tour albums - ‘Voëlvry’ and ‘Voëlvry - Die Toer’. And RetroFresh recently released The Cherry Faced Lurchers' 'Live At Jamesons' (from 1985) on CD with bonus tracks. The band embarked on their first international tour to South Africa in late 2002, and made their first appearance at Woodstock 4. The band will be back at Woodstock 5 next week, and will be one of the headline acts at the Macufe Rock Concert to be held at the Varsity rugby stadium in Bloemfontein on October 11th alongside Springbok Nude Girls, Karen Zoid, Soulja, Rhutz, dDisselblom, Springcan, FuziGish, Diesel Whores, Boo!, Kelvin Declined, and Orange. Rainshine are extremely popular on the American independent circuit. In April 2002, they were named New England Rock’s Band of the Month, with a sound that has been compared to Stone Temple Pilots, NIN and the Foo Fighters. In 2002, RAINSHINE opened for Sevendust and Filter at ‘Rock Free or Die II’ in Manchester, NH, as well as played in front of 45,000 people at the Boston Freedom Festival. In 2003, the band released a full-length CD, ‘Fallen Hero’, which sold well while touring across the US and Canada playing festivals and shows, including opening for the Foo Fighters and Sum 41. ‘Fallen Hero’s title track was written as a dedication to the six Worcester, MA fire fighters who died in the line of duty on December 9, 1999. ‘Fallen Hero’ is played regularly on both corporate and college radio stations in the USA. The album was recorded with notable producer Scott Reibling (Weezer, American Hi-Fi). Rainshine were also asked to play at smaller venues in KZN, to draw attention to the talented artists that belong to the new Wicked Bands booking agency. Because exposure is the main objective, they are seeking full attendances and will sell the tickets at only R20. The exception will be Hillbilly's where they'll sell for R30 (extra costs incurred by owner's beer festival set-up with the bonus being 5 support bands). The full list of Rainshine in SA dates, venues and artists are all available at http://www.sagigs.com -------------- FLATLEY MEETS MADIBA - LORD OF THE DANCE TO RETURN IN 2004 Nelson Mandela held a short meeting with ‘Lord Of The Dance’ kingpin, Michael Flatley, on Tuesday 9 September in South Africa. After the huge success of the first GMT in 2001, entries are being invited across 25 categories that make up the body of this celebration of Afrikaans music. SABC2 and Potchefstroomse Universiteit vir Christelike Hoer Onderwys (PUKKE), have stepped in as proud sponsors of the event. Five new categories have been added this year: Best Solo Artist Best Hip Hop/R&B Album Best Electronic/Dance Album Most Stylish Artist and Best Cover Design for an Afrikaans album or single. “Afrikaans music is thriving but not everyone is aware of it, which is why we created the awards”, says Erik De Jager, Executive Producer of Threshold Collective - the producers of Geraas (broadcast every Wednesday night at 6pm on SABC2). “There are young contemporary artists who are proud of their culture doing exciting new things and taking it forward. There are artists consistently selling thousands of CDs and packing out concert venues. Where there was a void was in the lack of recognition of this talent. GMT not only rewards Afrikaans musical achievements, but also make sure that people know what is going on”. In contrast with the trend in both national and international music award ceremonies, the GMT has decided to reduce the entry fee per category to R200 in the interest of giving independent artists a fair chance at competing with the bigger, more established artists. The categories judged this year include Best Adult Contemporary Album, Best Album of the Year (both previously won by Amanda Strydom for her album “Op ‘n Klein Blou Ghoen”), Best Jazz Album (previously won by Paul Hamner), Best Rock Album and Best Newcomer (both previously won by Karen Zoid). Other categories include Best Compilation, Choral, Classical, Gospel, Boeremusiek, Country and Pop Albums with the Best Pop Album previously won by Johannes Kerkorrel. Five of the awards for 2003 are not open to entries - the Lifetime Achievement Award (previously won by Anton Goosen), Most Stylish SA Artist (a new category), Best Selling Afrikaans Album (won by Juanita Du Plessis), Best SA Music Event (won by the KKNK), and Best Live Performer (previously won by Theuns Jordaan). There are also two categories decided by public vote, namely; ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best Live Performance’. In these categories five finalists will be appointed, with the public deciding who walks away as the winner. The public will also have the option of nominating an artist of their choice for an award in these categories. To nominate an artist, members of the public can fax their nomination (and the category for which they are nominating the relevant artist) to (011) 880-5504, or email their choice to christelle@thresholdcollective.com The Geraas Music Awards will take place on 17th November at a glittering ceremony at The Globe Theatre, Gold Reef City. Belboks - the interactive Afrikaans music show on SABC2 - will broadcast live from the event. The GMT will be broadcast on SABC2 on 19th and 26th November in the regular Geraas time-slot, with a GMT special on 18th December on SABC2. Entries close on Friday 19th September. Entry options include: e-mail: maito:christelle@thresholdcollective to request an entry form collect and deliver an entry booklet from: 259 Jan Smuts (cnr Smits Drive, entrance in Smits), Dunkeld West, Johannesburg Post to: PO Box 2194, Rivonia, 2128 Fax request addressed to: Christelle (011) 880 5504 For further information or to set up interviews please contact:- Sandra Briar mailto:sandra@total-exposure.co.za -------------- HIDDEN YEARS ARCHIVES ON SAFM Some of the excellent SA music currently residing in Dave Marks’ “Hidden Years Archives” will be getting a radio outing this week. But Soulja, like their name, are made of sterner stuff and overcame all obstacles to deliver a wild and dangerous set to the 2000 punters who turned out to see the Brazilian noise gods. ‘Plan My Attack’ is the band’s opening release, recorded at Paris Studios, with an album to follow soon. -------------- MY SHADE - ‘IMPRESSED’ http://www.SAmp3.com/mp3/my_shade_impressed.mp3 See band spotlight in zaZone section below... -------------- ONS KOM TERUG - ALTA JOUBERT http://www.SAmp3.com/mp3/alta_joubert_ons_kom_terug.mp3 Alta Joubert: vocals, harmonica, guitar / Henry Steel: guitar, bass / Barry van Zyl: drums / Zelda Myburg: piano / Wynand Davel : violin / Schalk van der Merwe: bass This is the opening track from Alta's latest CD 'Warrelwinde' (released by Hoezit Musiek). The track is a remixed version of the very popular song originally sung by SA pop group Ballyhoo. The remix is a contemporary dance mix and will feature several other club mixes from acclaimed European and Australian DJ/producers as well as top SA Producers. The track was originally released in 1981 on the Trutone Records imprint. The new version will open the track up to a whole new audience and the club mixes will open the door for a famous track to work its heat on the dance floor. Aliki leads the group with her angelic vocals while Nicos is the mastermind behind the sequencing and composing of the music. The new single was recorded, arranged and produced by Nicos Vouris in his Magnetik Studios Cape Town, and will be distributed to South Africa and Europe in September 2003. The track will also feature on various compilations such as ‘Bump 13’ in time for Xmas 2003. A music video will also be launched to SATV later this year. -------------- VAGABOND’S CURRENT PICKS Brian Currin selects some of the top songs (SA and other) that he has heard so far in 2003: 1) South African - New: Seven Day Story - 'Going Nowhere Slowly' ------------------------------------------ Where I heard/ found it: TV series on SABC3/ Promo EP What I think: Wonderful mid-paced song about being on the road with nowhere to go, and lots of time to get there. Pity there are no actual places name-checked to give it an SA flavour, but maybe that will help it get overseas interest. Or not? If you like that, try this: Karen Zoid - 'Set Of Wheels', Sugardrive - 'Road', Piet Botha - 'Laat Die Wiele Rol' Tait - 'In My Arms' ------------------- Where I heard/ found it: 5FM/ 'Back Seat Driver' CD What I think: A powerful, tuneful rock ballad in the Bon Jovi tradition... OK get those bic lighters ready. And James Stewart plays the piano on this one. If you like that, try this: Phringe - 'Need' Karen Zoid - 'Danville Diva' -------------------------- Where I heard/ found it: Live in Concert/ 'Chasing The Sun' CD What I think: Designer label-checking bilingual "tribute" to the girls my mother always warned me about. Driving beat and great guitar from Karen's fiancée Don Reinecke (Mr Zoid, anyone?). Uh-uh, indeed. If you like that, try this: Valiant Swart - 'Die Son Sak In Durbanville', Valiant Swart - 'Die Son Sak In Danville', Martin Rocka - 'Trash Like You' Martin Rocka - 'Trash Like You' ------------------------------ Where I heard/ found it: SL Mag cover disc (August 2003) What I think: New theme song for the Jerry Springer Show, maybe? Martin Rocka (AWOL from Wonderboom) has a wicked sense of humour and great style. Alice Cooper would be proud, Martin. If you like that, try this: Martin Rocka - 'James Brown (I Ain't)' (SAmp3.com), Rolling Stones - 'Bitch', David Bowie - 'Rebel Rebel' Wonderboom - 'Dead Right' -------------------------- Where I heard/ found it: 5FM/ 'Tell Somewhere Who Cares' CD What I think: This opening track from Wonderboom's new CD sets the tone straight away; this is a good-time album, to be enjoyed over and over again. If you like that, try this: Gary Glitter - 'Rock And Roll, part 2', T Rex - 'Metal Guru' Evolver - 'Let's Get Naked' -------------------------- Where I heard/ found it: SAmp3.com/ SL Mag cover disc (Sept 2003) What I think: Funky, spunky sing-along party rock from this PE band. All together now: "let's get naked... again". If you like that, try this: Wonderboom, Tommy Bolin-era Deep Purple ('Come Taste The Band', etc) Wickhead - 'Right By My Side' ----------------------------- Where I heard/ found it: SL Mag cover disc (August 2003) What I think: Remember how original the Spin Doctors sounded when they first hit the scene way back when? Well that's the feeling I got when this mix of acoustic guitar-picking, Just Jinger/ Counting Crows-style vocals and rocking rhythms jumped out at me from the August 'Selection' CD. These guys really are wick-ed. If you like that, try this: Dayspring - 'Psycoparalysis' (SAmp3.com) Janie Jones - 'Trip' ------------------- Where I heard/ found it: Live at the Mercury/ 'Rough Cuts' CD What I think: Kudos to 14-year old Rafi (Joe Drummer?) for following the tempo changes in this perfect little slice of teen angst. And Stacey Bass plays a great bassline behind Alex Baker's rhythmic guitar. Composed and sung by rock idol Natalia. Sounds like teen spirit to me. If you like that, try this: Curious George - 'Tripping' (SAmp3.com), Wonderboom - 'Tripping' Janie Jones - 'Kids In The Clubs' ------------------------------- Where I heard/ found it: Live at the Mercury/ 'Rough Cuts' CD What I think: The lyrics say it all; "Well all the kids are in the clubs, getting drunk and doing drugs, and that DJ music sucks". So punk rock is the new punk rock... err, ok. If you like that, try this: Punk rock from all decades, but especially the Clash! Tidal Waves - 'Harmonijah' -------------------------- Where I heard/ found it: SL Mag cover disc (May 2002) What I think: Laid-back reggae instrumental with a soulful blues feel. Great harmonica (hence the name I guess), and a very cool fuzz-guitar solo. Definitely has a place on my next 'Chill Or Be Chilled' mix CD. If you like that, try this: The Branch - 'Write My Name' (SAmp3.com), Jerome Arthur - 'Confessions In Dub', 340ml - 'Michelle' (SAmp3.com), Kaal - 'I Have The Blues' (SAmp3.com) 2) South African - Classic Songs: Mango Groove - 'Hometalk' --------------------------- Where I heard/ found it: KFM/ Mango Groove - 'Best Of' What I think: Heard this recently on KFM, and was reminded how great Afro-pop really was/still is. African rhythms fused with Western pop sensibilities. Lots of drums, brass and voices. Sit still to this only if you're dead. If you like that, try this: Mango Groove, Khumbula, Johnny Clegg 3) Non-South African: Free Association - 'Sugar Man' ------------------------------ Where I heard/ found it: CD from a friend in the UK... thanks Johnny! What I think: Pleasant enough new version by David Holmes and his group, I suppose, but not a patch on the original or even Just Jinger's version. And the female vocal thing, though good, has been tried at least twice before; by Stellar One Eleven in Oz, and Jenny Devivo from Martha's Vineyard in the USA. The psychedelic freak-out section is very cool, like those middle sections from 'Whole Lotta Love' (Led Zeppelin), 'Gypsy' (Uriah Heep) and 'Get Down Make Love' (Queen). And talking about Queen, the Chilly Gonzalez remix starts with the bass riff from 'Another One Bites The Dust', which works very nicely. If you like that, try this: Rodriguez - 'Cold Fact', David Holmes - 'Come Get It I Got It' Simple Plan - 'I'd Do Anything' ------------------------------ Where I heard/ found it: 'No Pads, No Helmets ... Just Balls' CD What I think: Tweak with American accents... err, Tweak also sing with American accents, oh well. This is a fun song and the band seem to be having a great time performing it... they must be great to see live. If you like that, try this: Tweak, Blink 182, Skwirmish (BC) -------------- ATTENTION! HERE'S SOULJA? This hot new Cape Town hard rock band grabbed the prestigious support slot on the recent Sepultura SA tour for the Johannesburg concert at Mega Music, read more... Let’s start with an unaccredited but accurate description of Soulja: “The polygamous marriage of nu-metal, melodic pop, in-your-face jump up and roaring reggae rapped up into delectable funk-spiced dark life with the aid of a solid beat, is massaged into a likeable cacophony that is devoid of any divorce of the above. Witness the energetic live performance and one may find the pleasantly intense nature of the front man coupled to the brute and professional execution of the music quite refreshing.” (Anon) Soulja is Warren Snaith on vocals, Lee Radmall on Lead guitars, Greg Seller on guitars and backing vox, Curve on bass and Stuart McLaren on the drums. Formed in 2001 by Warren and Greg, Soulja have gone through changes and mutations musically and in make-up - it’s hard to believe that the current explosive line-up is only 8 months old! Soulja were booked for Splashy Fen 2002 after their fourth gig. The band has played the Cape circuit for the last year and in that space of time has shared stage space alongside the city’s sexiest acts. They have headlined the mother city’s premier venues to capacity crowds and tantalized festivalgoers at Wingerdstok 2003 on their Friday night slot. Three music videos have been shot, with another one on its way by director Johan Nel. Soulja have embarked on gigs with Arno Carstens’ New Porn at Mercury Live and SAMA winners Not My Dog at The Whammy Bar in most recent times. Soulja also headlined the Sunday night at The Cause Punk Music Festival. The band supported Brazilian rockers Sepultura at the Johannesburg leg of their 4-date SA tour just over a week ago. It didn’t all go according to plan for Soulja but, they still performed with the confidence and energy that characterizes this tough bunch. A full national tour is on the cards and some challenging unplugged performances are in place now that the studio recordings of the band’s new material has been wrapped up recently with Cape Town producer, Paris Lucas. Watch out! ...... the Soulja army is coming! Soulja may be contacted via e-mail or telephone and a website is constantly under construction. This week: MY SHADE My Shade is a three-piece band from Cape Town. When naming the band the guys selected several suitable names, but found that every time that they'd settle on one they'd find out that "some Ethiopian Death metal band" or a "South Vietnamese boy band" already had the same name. They then looked for original names and came up with "No Shade" but decided to change it to "My Shade", a name which has a different personal meaning for every member in the band. What makes them different is that their drummer is also their vocalist. This is no easy feat considering that the band plays an extremely hardcore set. When asking the band how long they've been together they responded "3.6928 years, 3 months, 16 days, 5 hours, 45 minutes and 1 sec 2 sec 3..." The band’s high point thus far was being played on Barney Simon's Night Zoo and getting offers from local record labels in SA. They also jumped to second place on an internet chart after only being on it for 1 week and have since had over 1500 downloads of ‘Impressed’. The band wants to set up a local distribution deal, play all the big national festivals, do a national tour and will be releasing a full-length album next year. The band will be undertaking a small KZN tour towards the end of November so watch www.zaZone.com for more information and dates when they are confirmed. The band has an EP which they recorded earlier this year and is available from the band at gigs or by e-mailing mailto:myshade@webmail.co.za ‘Impressed’ is not as heavy as the band’s other tracks and therefore appeals to my tastes a little more. It is different from other heavy metal band tracks in that the lyrics are clear and the "casual" listener can easily pick up the lyrics and be caught up in the chorus and melody. The mp3 'Impressed' can be downloaded from http://www.SAmp3.com. Upcoming My Shade gigs include: 19 Sept 2003 - Pandemonium @ HTS Belville, Cape Town with Neshamah, 5 Star Society 4 Oct 2003 - Tygervalley Boogaloos Skatepark, Cape Town with The Narrow, Neshamah & 5 Star Society 25 Oct 2003 - Whiplash 2003 @ The Mercury Live, Cape Town with Toyland, Corruption of Virtue & 3 Metal DJ's 31 Oct 2003 - October Fest, Kraaifontein, Cape Town with 4 other bands Sponsored by zaZone.com Promoting SA Music... http://www.zazone.com LISTEN http://www.SAmp3.com -------------- Email your MP3 reviews to mailto:editor@sarockdigest.com?subject=mp3reviews Download South African mp3's from http://www.SAmp3.com South African Music: Loud 'n Proud -------------- ONE WORLD http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Selling South African Music To The World --------------- MORE REVIEWS --------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://www.cd.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________ 4.USA FOR AFRICA ------------------- Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music. SOUTH AFRICAN MUSIC CD’s ON EBAY - PART 2 Last week I said, "By the time y'all read this I'll know if I have won the eBay bidding for a Mango Groove CD." I won the bidding and the CD is on its way to me. Last week I also said, "eBay isn't a rich lode, but nuggets do appear" and yet I decided this week that eBay is a rich vein. For example, yesterday an auction ended on an import to the US of a two-CD set of both 'Galactic Vibes' and 'Astra' by Freedom's Children, with tracks from 'Hymn of the Broken-Hearted Horde'. Sounds like a bootleg, but it might be legit. Nonetheless, it was on eBay this week. There are also a few eBay dealers in South Africa who sell legitimate Retro Fresh releases, and SA releases of international pop and rock. I haven't bought from them, but I wish them success, and I check their wares often. For a while, A-Cads CDs were on eBay regularly. Now it's Qkumba Zoo. And if you want Qkumba Zoo, please don't bid on the one I'm bidding on, but rather go for the 99-cent one. Or have patience because more Q Zoo will be up next week. Sugardrive's 'When I Died I was Elvis' was on eBay for a few weeks with no takers. But I figure, after paying for it and the shipping from California to Texas, it would have been as much as I have paid from One World, and, given a choice, I support SA rock with my dollars-into-Rands. The US releases of Four Jacks and a Jill's 'Master Jack' and 'Fables' vinyl albums appear frequently, and if I didn't own two or three copies of both these records already, including the first one bought in 1968, I'd certainly be a bidder. What I haven't seen in a while is the sheet music for their song 'Master Jack'. A quick search on eBay this week in CDs only, for "South African", with the "items and descriptions" box checked, yields, among the usual Johnny Clegg, Miriam Makeba, Ladysmith Black Mambazo: Tribe After Tribe's 'Love Under Will', a two-on-one CD of Manfred Mann's, a couple of Benjamin Gate, and two by Trevor Rabin - whose name I recently saw for the soundtrack credit of the Nick Cage film 'Gone In 60 Seconds'. Speaking of Trevor, Rabbitt records and CDs sometimes turn up on eBay, most recently their Greatest Hits. Then, of course, there's Seether who get 80 eBay hits all by themselves. I bought Saron Gas's double CD from One World, and the American release 'Disclaimer' from Amazon. It was satisfying buying SA rock on Amazon. Sometimes I find nice deals (Bongo Maffin was worth the few bucks it cost me). Other times I pass on CDs that the sellers, as we say here in Texas about over-priced goods, "They sure think highly of that." But overall, eBay supplements my One World purchases and adds steadily to my collection. Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com _________________________________ 5.A NAARTJIE IN THE UK ------------------------ London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music: ‘FAREWELL STATION ROAD’ - WAYNE PAULI When the SA Rock Digest published its list of albums of 2001, I was intrigued by the comments made about the number 7 album 'Farewell Station Road' which had not yet reached these far flung shores of the (ex) Empire. I soon rectified the fact that I had not heard this album and I was quickly in agreement with my colleagues at Digest Towers in that 'Farewell Station Road' was indeed worthy of its inclusion in the albums of the year list. In fact it could quite easily be included in the album of the year list every year since it is one that I revisit often. A quick history lesson for those not in the know. Wayne Pauli played guitar on the Digest's number 5 album of 2001 which was Venessa Nolan's 'Burn', and so impressed those at Sunset Recording Studios (where 'Burn' was recorded) that they gave him some studio time to record this quietly magnificent album. If one were to draw an emotions graph of this album one would see a sort of roller coaster effect. Starting with the quite upbeat rock track 'Who? (Can Relate to You)'. Pauli then slows things down to the emotionally lowest point at track 4 where you have sunk with him into the bluesiest of 'Deep Black Hole(s)'. From there we climb out via 'My Father' and 'Santa Maria' to meet the beautiful 'Andrea', which after the opening track is probably the most upbeat. Then another little dip down to 'The Sound of Crying' and ending on the up with the Bruce Springsteen/ Nebraska-styled acoustic title track. Now remember that these peaks and troughs are emotional ones and have nothing to do with the quality, which is at an exceptionally high level throughout. Pauli's playing is superb and his vocals match the songs’ content with scary accuracy. He injects a growly world-weariness into 'Deep Black Hole', adds an imploring edginess to 'Your Silent Ways' and brings a whispered, breathy awe-struckedness to the quasi-religious 'My Father'. If, following the Digest's high rating of this album at the end of 2001, you still didn't go out and buy this, you can still get it at a very good price from One World and I am sure you'll be kicking yourself for not getting it earlier. This is quite frankly one of the best albums to come out of South Africa in recent times. It has certainly stood up proudly to repeated listenings here in London. Perry Como's 'And I Love Her So' bounced back for a third stint in the top 5 while local group The Dealians helped keep the SA content in the top 5 up as both Lauren Copley and Richard Jon Smith dropped down. It was just over 5 years previously that Gerry Rafferty had experienced top 5 success in SA. In 1973 it had been as part of Stealers Wheels, but in 1978, his first solo hit in SA made number 1 and 'Baker Street' has gone on to become an all time classic. Abba's 12th top 20 hit 'Thank You For The Music' became their 11th top 5 hit. 1983 saw no change whatsoever in the top 6 as local lad Pierre de Charmoy spent his 3rd consecutive week on the cusp of top 5 success. With Eddi Reader on lead vocals, the bouncy 'Perfect' by Fairground Attraction shot up the charts, climbing to the top spot from number 7 in 1988. The song had also topped the UK charts. They followed it up with a top 7 hit ('Find My Love') but subsequent singles failed to make an impression on the top 40 there. In SA this was their only hit. 'Simply Irresistible' became Robert Palmer's third top 5 hit in SA. After working on the new Watershed album (playing guitar and engineering), I then continued working with Brian O'Shea at "The Farm Studios" or rather "Musketeer Records" as the whole setup is now known. For the last 3 months I have been working on demos for the 2002 ‘Idols’ finalist "Ezra" (all his own material) and consequently producing the album trax on his CD (Brian is producing the singles), as well as engineering and mixing an Mbaqanga project called ‘Izingwe’. Ezra's CD is sounding great so far, expect something in a couple of weeks! (on BMG). Coming up are the various ‘Idols’ albums which I will in all likelihood be involved in, as well as some new Musketeer Records signings. So yes, I've been very busy and loving being back in studio again full time (I started working with Brian four years ago, but quit later on to focus on Watershed). Also, I have been doing recordings for private clients at my home-studio in JHB so please mention this to all the Digest subscribers and artists who wish to record demo's and full productions. Regards Paul McIver -------------- BUY A DUNCAN! Hi, Any possibility of Duncan Mackay’s recordings ever being released on CD? My old copies of ‘Chimera’ and ‘Score’ are not so good anymore. Regards Trevor Martell Canada mailto:tjmart@cogeco.ca Ed. - There are persistent rumours of 'Chimera' being officially released on CD sometime soon. The 'Chimera' CD released a few years ago on the Japanese Never Never Land label was done without the knowledge or consent of Duncan Mackay. 'Score' is a great prog-rock album from 1977 with vocal contributions from Steve Harley (Cokney Rebel) and John Wetton (Roxy Music, Uriah Heep and later Asia). Hi During the 2003 Tri-Nations Rugby between South Africa, New Zealand and Australia, the first match was held in South Africa and the Opening Ceremony included a theme song that was a duet by a female and a male artist. The first half of the song was sung in English and the last half in another South African language that I’m not familiar with. The chorus goes like this: "Everybody come, everybody sing, together we are strong, together we will win.........." The female artist is white with blonde hair cut just above her shoulders and the male artist is black and sings most of the other lyrics. Hi, The results of the Battle of the Bands competition (in Digest #216) surely contains an error. You wrote: “Some "Best musicianship" awards were also presented to: Lead guitar - Patrick Canovi (Metallic Sunn); bass guitar - Reggie Edwards (The Idiots); keyboards - Henry Barenblatt (The Idiots); drums - Denver Furness (Jam Rockers), and vocals - Dave Ornellas (The Idiots)”. I was under the impression that Peter Hunt was on keyboards for the Idiots not Henry Barenblatt?? I am an old toppie from the sixties and listened to The Idiots back then and also at the battle of the bands final and definitely the keyboard player of The Idiots is and was Peter Hunt. But maybe it was Henry Barenblatt from some other band that won the individual award? Pity if Peter won and Henry is getting all the praise, or if Henry won and everyone thinks he was keyboardist with the Idiots. We are so damn spoiled, I think we have the most moderate climate in the world right here in EL. We just can't take anything extraordinary. And oh yes, we ain't the windiest city. That title belongs to PE which is a long way from here. So now you know - sometimes they forget to close their door and a bit of wind leaks through to EL or CT. To all country fans/musos - I saw Lance James at the Pretoria Old Car show last weekend. I travel to PTA from East London every year to see the cars and I always spend more time listening to Lance instead! I was just thinking, and maybe it's just a dream, but dreams do come true. I mentioned it to Lance at the show and maybe he has given thought to it. What about a Country concert/festival in East London for old times’sake? There are lotsa Country fans here. If you pick this up, Lance, please contact me. I don't have your details. Of the old school, who is still travelling about and performing? And are there up-and-coming Country artists? Or is it a dying genre? If the concept is interesting, contact me. I can probably raise backing musos here, we have lots of talent, including several old style dance bands. Suitable venues could be Buffalo Pass resort, German Farmers Hall, and several other places in the vicinity. I can do a lot of organising this side. Due to my freelance connection, publicity is not a problem. Snags might be the cost of bringing the artists here and their fees. Accommodation shouldn't be a major issue though. We also have people who hire out large sound equipment. I am sure for the sake of an event like this they will be kind as far as price goes, it will also be beneficial for them By the way, Peter de la Rey [famous as leader of "Peters Clan" from Toeka se dae] is still here and just as full of mischief as ever. Great guy. I would suggest him for compere/MC [Down a Liooooon!] We have great musos, remember the du Preez family [Caroline, George, Louis, etc], well a lot of them live here and believe me, George is a terrific lead and bass player, Louis is a terrific drummer, and you all know Caroline. And what about Maureen Nel? She is also here, as are many of the musos who used to back the visiting stars in those heady days. Anyway, the other morning I surfaced from slumber only to hear the most amazing version of ‘While my Guitar Gently Weeps’ on my clock radio. I couldn't believe it, cos that's my 2nd favourite song, as you know, and it was being treated very well, [I also like the Jeff Healey version and that other little group, I can never remember their name, you know, the one where Eric Clapton played guitar and someone called George thought it was himself.] The group sounded familiar, but blowed if I could identify them. Then the announcer told us it was Toto, free at last from their onerous contract, and let loose on the world to do what they want. Sorry if this is old news, but I have been sleeping since autumn you forestand?? If you haven't heard it, on the other hand, get it straight away. Another incredible artist, very underplayed but not under rated, is Natasha Turner. Very hard to get, the CD, but I have ordered one through TOP CD in Pretoria. I am attaching a recent music review from East London*. Spring is sprung, and the sleeping giant awakes. This (Theuns Jordaan) show was packed, so you can tell the okes to start coming back. EL will support. Oh yes, one last thing. Where, oh where can I lay my hands on a Hammond L-300 or L-100? I want it for my student son, who is poor but extremely talented in that way. Preferably one in excellent condition at a very low price, but let’s talk. Best regards D-man from Slummies, Don Bryce mailto:brycefam@lantic.net Address: First turn to the left as u enter East London. * see Don’s review of Theuns Jordaan concert below. -------------- LIVE IN SA MOONSHINE AT THE BLUE MOON By Moonshine Lee Nestled in the scenic wooded bushveld koppies of Uitkyk, about 10 km east of Nelspruit, is the Blue Moon. This venue is situated in probably the most picturesque setting in the entire country. Blue Moon is managed and run by three of SA's most ardent pilgrims of local music, Anthony, Renate and partner Peter, who host a number of festivals at the Blue Moon throughout each year featuring many of SA's leading musicians. Their love and passion for music has made this their full-time invocation. Anyone who has been to Blue Moon will vouch that the whole set up is nothing short of magnificent. Designed predominantly for open-air festivals, it is a huge roofed arena with main stage, expansive wooden dance floor, flanked by large seating areas on either side. It is also ideal for indoor festivals or if the elements turn foul. (....so there's never an excuse for party pooping at The Blue Moon.....). Of course everybody's favourite is the bar area perched above the seating area on the west side of the arena and which looks down on all the action below. Here is where many, many long enjoyable hours are spent after the gigs and on Sunday mornings. The main arena faces east in the direction of the hills, surrounded by terraced lawns which lead up into the koppie, creating a natural amphitheatre which produces the most incredible sound. During every festival huge bonfires are lit on the terraces, creating an amazing carnival atmosphere. Anthony's latest innovation is the addition of a 'Top Stage' situated to the east of the Main Arena, where most of the 'unplugged' performances take place. The 'Top Stage' faces west looking down the surrounding valleys of Uitkyk and presenting a view from there that is nothing short of breathtaking. I'm sure that as one looks down you can almost see the entire Lowveld. It is serviced with a fully equipped and well-run bar and comfortable seating. Sitting up here, one cannot help but lose oneself into some magical, mystical nirvana. This was the venue for the Castle Lager Laeveld Lawaai II hosted on Saturday 30/08/2003. The festivities kicked off from the 'Top Stage' at 15h30 featuring the lovely Anika who wooed the crowd with numbers from her latest CD "Killing Time". Next up were Akkedis, all the way from the fairest Cape. Akkedis performed a Tribute to Neil Young, the legend, in very fitting style in very fitting surroundings. And the last duo to serenade the crowd from 'The Top Stage', with an incredible bushveld sun setting in the background, was none other than Piet Botha & Jonathan Martin, who played all their favourites and set the tone for the rest of the evening. The action at the main stage took off at 18h00 with Mel Botes, who from the outset got the crowd going. Time to do it ala 'Laeveld' style..... Mel played a whole selection from his repertoire and the tone was set for a good party. This was followed by Blackie Swart who played hits like "Laat hy val" and various numbers from his latest CD "Pers Kombers". Next up was Dozi supported by a great backing band. This is what many of the 'Laevelders' had come for and in no time he had the dance floor bobbing & jiving. Piet Botha and the incredible Jack Hammer followed suit, which instantly picked up the tempo a notch or two. The Blue Moon by this time was pumping with songs from Piet's incredible selection, including numbers from his latest CD "Die Mamba". Next up and fast becoming one of this old rockin’ roll junkie's favourites, was Southern Gypsy Queen, another gem from Molteno in the Cape. Yes, they certainly know how to play good solid rockin’ roll, playing numbers from the likes of Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin etc. which are really 'close to home' for me! And then last but by no means the least, we were rocked by the Akkedis trio, soon to be joined on stage by Piet Botha. This incredible combo had the hard-core stompin and head-banging deep into the Lowveld night. Wow - an incredible finish to a magical day! The Blue Moon.......yes, a Mecca to SA music and a pilgrimage not to be missed on your musical journey! It's a must on your music calendar! Anthony, Renate and Pete thank you, your hospitality is unequalled. There is plenty of accommodation available in the immediate vicinity for those travelling from Gauteng or any of the other provinces, and a stay over in this magical place will make this an even more unforgettable experience! Please call Anthony, Renate or Pete on 013-744 9033 for more information. Before us is a darkened stage and the words “Karoo Troebadoer” on the backdrop. Two guitars sit watching the capacity crowd. "Ooh, hy's so 'n pragtige man," a buxom tannie gasps, aiming for her seat. Her companion clucks in agreement. That is the general consensus among the ladies, including the one I have borrowed for the evening. This object of female yearning strides from the wings and addresses the audience in avant garde Anglo/Afrikaans, adding to the kultuurfees atmosphere. Howzit Oos-londen!!! The audience is spellbound by his gravelly, mellifluous voice. He turns on the skokiaan-and-60 grit sandpaper for Koos Kombuis' "Onder In My Whiskyglas" [….."3 skepe het my hart verraai"……….]. The voice reaches deep and grabs your heartstrings. His charming patter has the crowd absolutely charmed. Lots of Koos du Plessis, Koos Kombuis, and of course his own stunning compositions. Every song tells a story, plenty of friends and lovers gained and lost along life’s journey [and he is only 32!]. Accompanying Theuns on stage is electric guitarist Anton L'Amour, a phenomenally good musician in his own right. His smooth Shadows-type sound is the perfect foil for Theuns’ folky acoustic guitar. The quality sound and light engineering adds the dop to the mix. After interval and refreshments, Theuns announces a surprise guest artist: Andre Swiegers, no mean troubadour himself. We hear the "1966-Volkswagen-Beetle-Blues," inspired by an out-of-breath Volksie broken down next to the Ben Schoeman Highway. Through the funny words I pick up the excellent quality of his voice and guitarwork. In some of his songs I hear Leonard Cohen. Theuns and Anton give us [the Koos Kombuis song] 'Kytie', the ironic story of many South Africans ("Kytie was 'n ma vir my, 20 jaar by ons gebly"). The guitar duelling is brilliant in this song. Theuns then does several traditional loslit numbers, and the audience tiekiedraais in the aisles. We hear some English-language ballads, with Theuns' bottomless voice making the original artists, Neil Diamond, Cat Stevens and even Kris Kristoffersen sound like boy sopranos. Next time, I want to hear "Wanderin' Star." Theuns will handle that too. Theuns had humble beginnings in music, entertaining for pleasure and pocket money while he studied industrial psychology at Stellenbosch. He was doing his military training when he was noticed, and the rest is history. He has produced two albums, 'Vreemde Stad' [referring to Pretoria when he arrived there as a homesick Karoo lad] and 'Tjailatyd'. He is working on another one. It's a magical evening, and it's 11o'clock before we let them stop to sign CD's and pose for photographs. Luister manne, if Theuns comes back, en ek is seker hy sal, I'm there.
