Henry Ate, with possibly the full line-up, will be gigging and building a following in the US for the next year or so. So the two Cape Town dates on Henry Ate's current national tour are actually a long-term, but not final, farewell to the band's very strong fan-base in the Cape. The first concert will be at Dockside, by Canal Walk (Thursday 10 July), and the second will be at the band's happy hunting ground at the Mercury Live (Saturday 12 July). In an amicable settlement with lawyers representing Cape Outspan Pty Ltd, African Dope agreed to change their logo and trading mark on all printed and publicity materials released by African Dope with immediate effect from the end of May 2003 - in order to resolve copyright infringement issues due to similarities between the old African Dope logos and marks owned by Cape Outspan. In the end, AD are very happy with the outcome as they have a new logo, hand drawn by Waddy Jones, which they believe is phatter than the last one and a positive step forward for the label - and of course they avoided being sued. AD insisted that it was never their intention to diss anyone (except Durban FM radio stations), and they are grateful to Cape Outspan and their legal representatives for the reasonable and conciliatory nature of their dealings with them. However - please note that any usage of the old African Dope logo is now highly illegal and could cause havoc for the AD label. So please update your records with the new logo as soon as possible, which can be downloaded from http://www.africandope.co.za/nulogo The label's brand new website is rapidly approaching completion - redesigned by Cape Town webheads, Raygun. It will henceforth be domained at http://www.raygun.co.za, and was due to go live on July 4, so maybe catch a last look at the old site before it's gone...at: http://www.africandope.co.za. LISTEN http://www.SAmp3.com/africandope.html -------------- TRIBE AFTER TRIBE IN GERMANY André Wilms, the webmaster of the official and very excellent Robbie Robb/Asylum Kids/Tribe After Tribe website recently had the man, the band, and Tim Parr all on his German home turf for a full tour. So André caught many of the concerts, met everyone a few times, including Tim Parr, and has added plenty of Live Reviews (in his 'Tour' section), and live pics from the tour to his Tribe After Tribe website at http://www.robbirobb.com ... so have a look! -------------- VOËLVRY DOCCIE ON THE BOX The documentary on the Voëlvry Tour will be flighted on KykNet (Channel 35 on DSTV) on the 5th of August at 20:00. It will include live footage of the various artists who toured on the Voëlvry Tour in the late 80's, such as the late Johannes Kerkorrel, Koos Kombuis and the late Bernoldus Niemand (aka James Phillips). Sheer Sound recently released the live album called 'Voëlvry - Die Toer', which was originally recorded in 1989 and remastered by Lloyd Ross for the album's first release in April 2002. The album consists of some of the best live songs performed by Johannes Kerkorrel, Koos Kombuis and Bernoldus Niemand. Sheer Sound also re-released the first Voëlvry album, simply called 'Voëlvry', in 2002. Between us, within an incredibly short period of time, our websites have climbed to join the best in the genre, we've organised 6 CD compilations and delivered overseas bands ENTOMBED (Witchdoctor) THE HAUNTED (Witchdoctor) & SEVEN13 (Wicked Rock) to South Africa. It's a union of forces as we invite you to join our monster CD project that'll easily eclipse our past endeavours and give you greater exposure than that which you've had. The 'Heaven & Hell' double CD will boast great hard rock, extreme metal, commercial rock and innovative alternative music. Disc one will be titled 'Heaven' and will appropriately feature the clean face of rock. 'Hell' will naturally be the darker second disc. The majority will be of South African composition but due to our contact with incredible overseas bands, a quality portion will be international. Our system puts the money into the artist/bands' hands and helps generate exposure for all globally. We will press 2500 units that'll be disseminated as follows: · 200 for promotion & giveaways. · 1800 delivered to the 36 participating bands/artists (50 units to each). · 500 for Witchdoctor Records and Wicked Rock to retail. The overall benefits are enormous. Firstly, you receive 50 CDs that will double your investment. Alone, the posters, flyers and stickers are probably more than any independent artist has utilised. The system ensures that all the bands work together. Combined, we are enabled to achieve more. It's that same unity that brings Wicked Rock and Witchdoctor's resources together. We are ensuring that you get maximum media exposure with a financial return. Additionally and importantly, the bands retain all the rights to their music. NEW MP3's: Mitsoo - 'Hillary' http://www.SAmp3.com A classic old school chick-punk-trio from Cape Town, with influences all the way from the Slits to Sleater-Kinney. This is a short, blasting tribute to Hillary Clinton, depending on how you view the word "tribute" though (we know about the "ugly lovechild", but does she really have an "alien lover"??). True to the spirit of '77 when rock songs were short, fast, and screamed! Pay attention boys! ---------------- Roger Lucey - 'Lungile Tabalaza' http://www.SAmp3.com Based on a true story, 'Lungile Tabalaza' (who "fell" to his death while in police custody) was one of the reasons Roger's 1979 album 'The Road Is Much Longer' was banned in 1982. The Directorate of Publications wrote on the 22 October 1982 (ref: P82/9/115); "The song Lungile Tabalaza... is extremely dangerous to the State. It creates the impression of violence and torture where the police force people to speak. ...the committee is of the opinion that the record should be banned and that its possession would also be prohibited." Available on SAmp3.com by kind permission of David Marks (3rd Ear Music) and Roger Lucey. ----------------- Piet Botha - 'Jeffreysbaai' http://www.SAmp3.com A fond instrumental tribute to the surfer's paradise of J-Bay which closes Piet's lastest CD 'Die Mamba'. Leon van Zweel blows the sax. This wonderful spot between Knynsa and Port Elizabeth has been an inspiration for many... take a listen to Brian Finch's 'Song To Jeffrey's' and Jamie Jupiter's 'The Blue (J-Bay)', both also on http://www.SAmp3.com --------------- READERS' CHOICE: 14-year Curmic from Cape Town sent us some of his impressions: Wildebeest featuring Piet Botha - 'Bossies' This is what happened to the soldiers during the Border War after being too long in the bush. Constant beat, catchy, fast. Canaan's Banana - 'Bob's Your Uncle' Humourous, bouncy, lighthearted, but it pertains to Zimbabwe's current crisis and Robert Mugabe. Dayspring - 'Psycoparalysis' It has outstanding guitar solos and although the lyrics appear to be meaningless, it is still one of my all-time favourite rock songs. Piet Botha - 'Die Mamba' Interesting song, it has a very different unique tune, beat and beginning. Then comes the fantastic electric guitar playing in the background. I heard this song by Piet in concert recently and it is even better on stage, especially Jonathan Martin's guitar solo at the end. The effect is magnified live. This is definitely a song to download. Serving Suggestion - 'Grateful' Loud but not too energetic. It's punk rock with an almost ska feel. Reminds me of Tweak or Offspring. Rodriguez - 'Sugarman' Psychedelic spacey music, all about different types of drugs. Far out. {Rodriguez turns 61 on Thursday and there is news of a collaboration with David Holmes on a new re-recording of 'Sugarman' to be released on Mercury - watch this space. - Ed.} Tweak - 'Tweak Sampler' (micassomix) I was consulted on the creation of this sampler. This is a typical Tweak collection: teen punk rock. Perfect for skateparks... in fact I saw Tweak in concert earlier this year at Boogaloos at Canal Walk. It was awesome. Download all these mp3's at http://www.SAmp3.com --------------------------------- Coming next week: Exclusive peek --------------------------------- Lazarus - 'Make Your Own System' Air guitar riffs, cool Chad Kroeger vocals, 80's rock sound. This song sounds like it could be used for the next SuperSport advert (the lyrics don't quite fit, though). Curmic mailto:curmic@rock.co.za -------------- Email your MP3 reviews to mailto:editor@sarockdigest.com?subject=mp3reviews Download South African mp3's from http://www.SAmp3.com South African Music: Loud 'n Proud ----- CDs ----- SPOTLIGHT ON: KAREN ZOID >From busking on a Melville pavement to becoming an SA rock icon in two short years is no mean feat. It may have been a bumpy ride at times for Karen Zoid, but with the release of her second album, 'Chasing The Sun', some Levi Strauss-sponsored SA concerts, and a tour to the UK and Europe pending, everything's working out well for this adored new SA rock star. A Johannesburger, who matriculated at the National School of the Arts, Zoid was a young rebel who lived the drugs and rock 'n roll lifestyle long before she even got near the swing doors of any studio. She ran away from home, and worked in Cape Town as a waitress, while still completing her schooling via correspondence, returned to her family, entered a Johannesburg film school - and, somewhere in between, joined a metal band. That was when she took to the streets with an acoustic guitar. There she was noticed and heard, and some demos followed, before she was signed by EMI SA, who released her stunning debut, 'Poles Apart', a collection of songs in Afrikaans and English that was a unanimous choice for the SA Rock Digest's Best Album of 2001. Extensive airplay followed, but it was her Afrikaans compositions that really caught the attention of an audience desperate to find their own voice. Volksliedjies like 'Afrikaners Is Plesierig' were suddenly given a whole new relevance. Zoid spoke on behalf of a new generation and voiced their boredom, their indifference to the past, their hatred of suburbia. They were even dubbed the "Zoid Generation" by Rapport. She was post Koos Kombuis, post Valiant Swart, was suddenly being quoted about issues like the "survival of Afrikaans"!. Zoid's influence wasn't only due to her honest and powerful lyrics and strong tunes, but also to her riveting live performances. Someone who could work an audience and combine visuals with raw rock power. Leather outfits, Groot Trek dresses and fire eaters. And every now and then she would reveal more than the crowd bargained for.... Round here we call her "Janis Morrison" for an assortment of reasons! (Stay away from places called Florida if you're going to expose yourself on stage!) 'Chasing The Sun' is her new, second album and once again it explores life in South Africa, suburbia, and post Gen-X boredom. The 14 tracks are a mixture of Afrikaans and English songs and also includes a moving, aggressive tribute to Johannes Kerkorrel's legacy, with the searing lyrics "Ons helde hang aan bome en die media steel my drome en die meaning gaan verlore..." ('Foto Teen Die Muur') The influence of Don Reynecke, her right-hand man and guitarist, is obvious in the arrangements and fuller, wider sound. He fills the gaps, answers her vocals with melody, or rocks hard if needs be. But most of Zoid's initial anger and frustrations seem to have been left behind on a concert stage somewhere. The lyrics are now more focused and introspective. Zoid sings about the labels she has to wear (Levis?), the adoration and media attention she has to endure, the life of a rock star on the road in South Africa, and of course love, that most enduring theme of all, is also well covered here ('All My Love', 'Beautiful'). But, then again, so are 'Dinosaurs', so, amongst all the personal growth and maturity going on, Karen Zoid has not lost her sense of humour or perspective. These five were hot favourites with viewers during the final stretch of the show - and their combined singing, performing, dancing and songwriting ability earned the group a contract with EMI South Africa. Richard was born in Wellington and raised in a small township called Mbekweni, Nigel hails from Ottery, Cape Town, Ernest was raised in Grassy Park, Naseera grew up in Mitchell's Plain and Lois spent her youth in Middelburg. For their debut album, Afro Z worked with Gabi Le Roux (of Mandoza fame) at his studio in Fish Hoek early in 2003. Le Roux was also the creative force behind 'Phenomenal', the debut single from the group, which was released last year and is still in high rotation on radio stations throughout the country. 'Phenomenal', with its Mbaqanga and kwaito threads and urban edge is obviously included on 'Ain't It Funny'. The song was sourced through Zomba Publishing in the United Kingdom and was penned by Michael Power, Connor Reeves and Raf Walters. Other album highlights among these 13 tracks are 'Playin' With My Mind', 'My Coldest War', and 'Don't Lie To Me'. 'Ain't It Funny' also features the very beautiful song, 'Condition of my Heart', which was penned by global star, Brian McKnight. -------------- VARIOUS - 'HOMEGROWN VOL 2' [EMI] The second in this series of contemporary SA pop-rock compilations with 20 SA pop songs that have received some decent airplay and exposure over the past year or two. But the time span leaves this collection sounding a little rusty. There's Watershed's first single, 'Shine On Me', instead of say 'Closing Down', the excellent first single off their new album, 'Wrapped In Stone'. Wonderboom currently have a new album out, but here we get their cover of Rabbitt's 'Charlie' from 2001? Tweak's 'House Party' gets to open the album, with its Emmarentia meets Los Angeles accents singing about the FBI raiding an out-of-control party (the FBI??? Do your homework boys), and 'Girlfriend (Of Mine)' finds Semisane's now-ex-vocalist Tikara doing a Kelly Osbourne-type rap. There's Mandoza's 'Tornado' - the successful sequel to his mega 'Nkalakatha'- alongside tracks from Cutting Jade ('Fight You'), Nianell ('As One'), 101 ('Rewind'), Afro Zee ('Phenomenal'), Seether ('Gasoline' - The Digest Single of 2002), Candice ('Hello'), Jo Day ('Above My Room'), Spoonfeedas ('Rain'), Henry Ate ('Finally'), and Sugardrive ('Disco Lazarus') amongst others. -------------- HILTON SCHILDER TO LAUNCH 'NO TURNING BACK' The debut album by the Cape Town-based jazzman Hilton Schilder, called 'No Turning Back', has just been released by Mountain Records. This album represents the continuation of the label's romance with Cape Jazz as Mountain Records has already released albums by Jonathan Butler, Basil Coetzee, Robbie Jansen and others. This new release was nominated in the recent SAMA Awards as best contemporary jazz album of the year. 'No Turning Back' will be launched with a concert at the Bassline in Mellville on the 14th of August. Hilton Schilder will also perform at the same venue on the 15th and 16th August. Hilton will be supported by a full band, including some of the performers who helped him record the album. The production of the CD was completed in studios in Cape Town in 2002. Schilder is a multi-instrumentalist but will concentrate on keyboards for the forthcoming shows. Tickets for the event are available by email request to - newmusic@email.com or by calling the Bassline Mountain Records, Cape Town. http://www.mountain.co.za -------------- SOME DOPE NEW COMPILATIONS There are two new albums currently in production and due to be released soon by the very un-lethargic team at the African Dope headquarters in Gardens. Despite the label's brand-altering run-in with the Name Police (see 'news' above), their new and hip music factory is buzzing. There is 'Muti Media' from The Kalahari Surfers, the follow-up to 2001's 'Akasic Record'. That album saw Warrick Sony, "The godfather of SA electronic futureafro dubnology", expanding on the concept with some "delicious dubby grooves hinting at every corner of the planet with lots of hednod afrikan flava" it says here, you decipher... The other new compilation about to appear is 'African Dopeness', from resident African Dope producers DJ Dope and Orpheus, who have been lost in cybersound for months, we're told, in collaboration with CT's premier ragga/dancehall/reggae crews - The Chronic Clan, Black Dillenger, Theba, and Zorro. This upcoming collection is decribed as "a nuskool afrikan smokers sound that will redefine how you perceive the word 'skank'". Due in September! Also just released, along the same lines, is the 'Area 69' compilation from Afrogalactic Records featuring a dubbed-out, funked-up selection of classics from the SA beats underground and featuring previously unreleased tracks from various artists like the Kalahari Surfers, Mr Mo, The Sticky and Joshu, as well as Cyber7, Binary Dredd, Black Lab and others. Check www.afrogalactic-records.co.za for more info Another chilled compilation is the follow-up to last year's 'Cape Town 2AM And Lounging'. This one's called 'Cape Town 2AM...Approaching Dawn', and is released through Ready Rolled. This is described as "a delicious mixture of jazzed and souled lounge grooves" from SA's premier producers, including Felix Laband, My Sisters Pulse, Nix Fallow, Anti-Hero, Delphi Affair and Kaolin. More info - www.readyrolled.co.za -------------- MARC OSBORNE - 'MILKY WAY' [INDIE] Marc's first track at age seven was 'Can't Change my Mind' and it got decent reviews so he headed off on his music career. A string of productions followed until September of 2001 when Marc got cracking on his debut album, 'Milky Way'. He enlisted the aid of drummer and producer, Bruce Wallace, and brought in Mauritz Lotz (guitar), Denny Laloutte (bass guitar), David Jooste (piano and keyboard) and Charl Coetzee & Peter Psaros (electric guitars) to flesh out these songs. The result is a combination of strong lyrics with deep uplifting melodies, inspirational rock ballads, a few pop tracks, and even a jazz number is thrown in to display Marc's versatility. -------------- JUNE RELEASES FROM ONE WORLD http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Here are last month's new releases now available online at One World: Soundtracks Various Artists - 'Amandla! Musik Ye Afrika - 'United We Stand' Second offering from this Zimbabwean group featuring Oliver Mtukudzi, Chiwoniso Maraire, Louis Mhlanga, Jimi Indi, and Sam Mataure. Gito Baloi - 'Ekaya/Na Ku Randza' A double CD re-release from the well-known Tananas bass player, containing two of Gito's early solo albums. Wanda - 'Voices' Wanda was previously with Ghetto Luv, but this is her solo album, with the unmistakable production touch of Jimmy Dludlu. In that spirit, this really is a wicked compilation. Disc One opens strong with Kelvin Declined, The Parlotones, and the Finkelstiens, then slides into a bit of punky sameness in style among the next half dozen songs, then picks up variety and radcool with Karen Zoid's 'Set of Wheels (Karoo Anthem)' and 'Madhatter' by Henry Ate, tracks 12 and 13. From those ladies on, it's strong rock to the finish of this 20-track disc. Those songs of "...a bit of sameness of style..." are all listenable, some more than request a listen--but if told they were an EP by, say, The Swaggering Proteas, I'd believe it. For the most part, Disc One is the new generation of South African rockers demanding to be heard. Disc Two has a mix of new generation and...mature rockers--even one no longer together, No Friends of Harry. Mixed among the new bands are The Awakening, Sunways, Squeal, Fetish, Just Jinger, and Battery 9, making a strong disc. Some of these newer bands, such as The Flowerheads and AK Massive, I've heard on 5FM's third 'Showcase' CD. Others, like What Now?!, Ohm, Duck & Cover, 33, Vernix, Pyramid Tongue, and Hog Hoggidy Hog, I know by name or know nothing about except their song on this comp. is cool. Who on the first disc will survive to graduate to the second disc of a future Wicked Mike collection? I don't know, but I'm going to stick around to find out. Thanks, Mike! Or shall I just call you Wicked? Anyone taking a journey Via Afrika would be greeted with this very distinct cry as it opens the eponymously titled first track on the eponymously titled first album from the semi-eponymously titled Via Afrika. This welcoming cry opens no less than 4 songs on the Retro Fresh CD re-release of the album as there are the original song and a dub mix from the original album, then a 2000 mix of both the song and the dub mix. Despite a lot of Via Afrika-ing going on there is still space on the album for a good deal more of that exotic, erotic, fresh `n bouncy driving jive that was Via Afrika. The band, consisting of René Veldsman, Lukas Crouse and Michele Rowe, had a very distinct exciting sound that was and still is unmatched anywhere. Drawing on a variety of styles they seemed to know just what ingredients to put into a song. Be it the African ululating vocal sound on 'Via Afrika', the Latin styling of 'De Tango' or the snaking North African rhythms of songs like 'Chiggi Chiggi', they never tired of trying new styles. And it's this fact that has preserved this album and makes it sound as fresh and invigorating today as it did back then. Of course back then, there were the colourful costumes and exciting stage shows to complement the music. Today, there's us to look back and compliment the music which stands up quite fine on its own thank you very much. Perhaps the driving force of Via Afrika was Rene Veldsman who had worked on some of the big Disco albums of the late seventies, working with John Ireland and ex-Rabbitt Neil Cloud on his solo album, she is also surmised to have played on the Disco Rock Machine album that featured that other Rabbitt Trevor Rabin. With that sort of grounding it's interesting to see the change in style as her power vocals charge up an album of ethic afro-punk dance music. 'Via Afrika' is an album that stands up to repeated listenings and still emerges as a powerful statement that despite all the hardships facing Africa (then and now), there is still a vibrant pulsing heart that screams out paaaaaaarrrrrrttttttyyyyy!!!!!!! So go on, blow your whistle, who knows, someone may just blow theirs. Stealers Wheel were riding high with the popular 'Stuck In The Middle With You'. The Wheels were made up of Gerry Rafferty and Joe Egan. Rafferty had played in a band called the Humblebums which featured none other than soon to be popular comedian Billy Connolly. 'Stuck In The Middle With You' featured in Quentin Tarantino's 1992 film 'Reservoir Dogs'. In 1977, Hot Chocolate took the Russ Ballard-penned 'So You Win Again' to the top of the UK charts and to number 31 in the US. This version of the song did not dent the SA charts, but a year later, Copperfield took their version of it into the top 5. Copperfield was a British band that had re-located to SA. With Bonnie Tyler firmly entrenched in the number 1 spot in 1983, it was time for the attack of the novelty single. Enter 5 colourfully dressed young ladies calling themselves Toto Coelo which is Latin for "entirely" or "utterly". Apparently these young lasses ate cannibals. Despite their weird tastes, they had to change their name in the US to Total Coelo after the band Toto made threatening noises. The song made number 8 in the UK but did not fare so well in the US. A pity really as I was looking forward to Weird Al Yankovic's version entitled 'I Smoke Cannabis'. 1988 saw no change in the make-up of the top 5. Kylie was into her second week at number 1 while the previous number 1 'Beds Are Burning' was making a hasty retreat. Even the once mighty Rick Astley seemed content to lurk at number 5. See http://www.SAgigs.com for details and other SA Punk gigs -------------- LIVE REVIEWS ------------- THE TOM AND JAMIE SHOW There was a lot of SA music nostalgia tied up in the set performed by James Stewart and Tom Fox in the first of their series of Sunday afternoon concerts at the beautiful Nova Constantia Wine Estate a week ago. Tom Fox was an original member of Bright Blue in the '80's, but joined The Usual in the '90's, alongside Stewart, Paul Tizzard and Yo-Yo Buys, when Bright Blue began a long sabbatical. The Usual released two EP's - 'The Shape That I'm In' and 'Like A Vision', and one full album, 'Born In A Storm' - before they also took a long break. James Stewart recently kick-started his solo career with a new website (http://www.jamesonline.co.za) and a bunch of new songs released on mp3, while Tom Fox and his old Bright Blue band-mates, Ian and Peter Cohen, and Dan Heymann, have stepped back into the spotlight with their current 'Madiba 1990' single, now at http://www.cd.co.za/brightblue. So the songs that washed over and around 150 well-wined and picniced fans in the farm's long, white-washed (temporary) venue included Usual favourites like 'Shape That I'm In', and 'Born In a Storm', alongside newer Stewart solo material like 'A Man Like Me', 'Shine', 'The Kind Of Love I Need', and 'If You'll Only Let Me In' (the pick of this excellent new bunch of songs), all played in slowed-down, uncluttered style with Fox strumming (and singing) gently on an acoustic Fender and Stewart entertaining on his new upright piano. The two have an innate and long-standing rapport and clearly enjoy the rapturous reception that classics like 'Shape That I'm In' and 'Weeping' receive. This was the first of four concerts at this venue, and if the idea of an arvie on a lawn of a well-stocked wine farm, followed by a concert by two of South Africa's finest pop-folkies, appeals to you, then you will find all the details at http://www.jamesonline.co.za And at http://www.SAgigs.com ---------- GIG GUIDE ---------- The SA Rock Digest list of recommended gigs can be found at: http://www.SAgigs.com Please send all gig info to mailto:sugar@sagigs.com?subject=gigs in a plain text e-mail. ___________________________________________ 9.INFO ------- ------ LINKS ------ Links to artists, gig guides, resources, record labels, recording studios, music trivia and more at: http://www.sarockdigest.com/links --------------- SUBSCRIPTIONS --------------- To subscribe - please send e-mail to: mailto:subscribe@sarockdigest.com?Subject=NewSubscriber Address changes - please send an e-mail to: mailto:subscribe@sarockdigest.com?Subject=SubcriberAddressChange To unsubscribe - please send a blank e-mail to: mailto:unsubscribe@sarockdigest.com?Subject=Unsubscribe ------------ BACK ISSUES ------------- http://www.sarockdigest.com/archives Online and keyword searchable ----------------------------------- PRESS RELEASES & CONTRIBUTIONS ----------------------------------- Please submit all press releases, contributions, reviews, gig & festival dates, requests, searches and comments to mailto:sugar@sarockdigest.com?subject=SARockDigest -------- EDITORS -------- Brian Currin & Stephen Segerman mailto:editors@sarockdigest.com?subject=SARockDigest --------------- CONTRIBUTORS --------------- John Samson Kurt Shoemaker Carina Laubscher Don Bryce Tertius Louw Daniel Neville Wicked Mike Gabi Muller Proofed by Ronx A SUGAR MUSIC PRODUCTION <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
