Once again a stellar array of both international and African artists has been assembled to grace the four stages at the now world-renowned Jazz Festival due to take place at the Good Hope Centre on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 March. The artists who were recently added to the prestigious bill include Busi Mhlongo, Neo Muyanga, Loading Zone, Dr Phillip Tabane, Godessa, Steve Dyer, Tony Cox & Barry van Zyl, Benguela, and the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Orchestra, which is another innovative festival showcase for emerging South African talent. The appearance of Dr Phillip Tabane is sure to cause great excitement among SA jazz aficionados, as performances by this memorable guitarist from the legendary Malombo duo have been rare over the past decade. Those other confirmed acts to date are India.Arie, Isaac Hayes, Deodata, Osibisa, Relax, Mukta, Jabu Khanyile feat Bayete, Pieces Of A Dream feat. Gerald Veasley, Yusef Lateef and Adam Rudolph Duo, Amina Meyers, Andreas Vollenweider with Pops Mohamed, Archie Shepp Quartet, Allou April, Bugge Weseltoft, Eric Vloeimans, Jonas Gwangwa, Floetry, Herbert, Andile Yenana Quartet, Marcus Wyatt, John Scofield Uberjam, Moses Khumalo, Zim Ngqawana, and the North Sea Jazz Super Band (whose membership is still a close-lipped secret, sorry!). There are also a number of SA Music Award (SAMA) nominees among the African acts appearing. From the hip Sheer Sound SA jazz label (who picked up a total of 34 SAMA nominations) there is Andile Yenana (Best South African Traditional Jazz album for 'We Used To Dance'), Marcus Wyatt (Best South African Traditional Jazz album for 'Africans In Space'), Moses Khumalo (Best Newcomer for 'Mntungwa'), Pops Mohamed (Best Male Artist for 'Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow'), and Tony Cox (Best Instrumental Album for 'China', and Best Duo or Group/ Best Instrumental Album for 'About Time' with Steve Newman). Other SAMA nominees on the Festival bill are Jonas Gwangwa (Best Adult Contemporary Album: African for 'Sounds From Exile'), Busi Mhlongo (Best Dance Album for 'Indiza'), and a special mention for Hotep Idris Galeta, the professor and driving force behind the North Sea Jazz Workshops, who also picked up three nominations (Best Male Artist, and Best South African Traditional Jazz album for 'Malay Tone Poem', and Best Producer on Zim Ngqawana's album). Among the international artists, India.Arie was a multiple winner at the recent 2003 Grammy Awards ceremony, taking the Best R&B Album for 'Voyage to India', and Best Urban/Alternative Performance for 'Little Things'. See 'Sound Solutions' section below for details on the NSJF Jazz Writing course! ---------------------------- HENRY ATE BACK IN CAPE TOWN It hasn't been easy keeping track of Karma and Henry Ate over the past year or so. First Karma was heading off to London to set up a demo studio with Neal Snyman. That didn't work out as planned, but Karma managed to make some strong London music connections. She returned to SA and assembled the usual Henry Ate line-up and began preparing for a US tour. At the last minute, bassist Brendan Ou Tim was forced out of the trip, but a hasty studio session saw Ou Tim accompanying Karma, Bruce McLaren-Lyall and Douglas Bean on their three-month trip, in slightly more than just spirit. Ou Tim was still back in SA, but his bass could be heard at most gigs courtesy of a mini disc (and after a while he was even being introduced to the audience!). Although Henry Ate began their tour around the South Florida area playing mostly covers, it wasn't long before the slowly filtered Henry Ate originals began filling up the set list. By the end of the tour the band were playing only Henry Ate material to packed houses and had built up a loyal following. Karma is currently recording and performing back in SA, and will be heading back to the US soon to follow up on some resulting "prospects". In the meantime she has recorded a 6-track live album (available soon), as well as a new song called 'Southern Skies' (an ode to SA), and a scorching cover of Dylan's 'Masters Of War', which is a song that really needs to be sung right now! (Coming soon to SAmp3.com!) But there's still that career retrospective ('The Singles 96-02') to promote, so Henry Ate are back on the concert trail. Karma has always offered showcase support slots on her bills to encourage emerging acts and to give them invaluable exposure and experience, as with Sons Of Trout, and with many other names through the years. Friday night (March 7) sees Henry Ate (Karma, Douglas Bean, Brendan Ou Tim, and Julian Sun) returning to the Mercury Live for a welcome (and probably sold-out) Cape Town concert. As is traditional, Henry Ate will be supported by Verity and Natalia, two emerging, young Cape Town artists. Verity has just released her debut CD and initial responses have been very encouraging. Natalia, who will be making another of her rare live appearances, has been building a very solid fan base around Cape Town and even further afield, following a constant stream of downloads off the SAmp3.com website for songs like 'Ugly', 'Bright Young Thing', and her new single, 'Beach Girl'. Natalia will be performing with Stacey Bass on backing vocals and, um, bass. The tour blasts off at at Carfax in JHB on Friday 7 March, followed by a concert at the Nile Crocodile in Pretoria on Saturday 8 March and then on to Burn Nightclub in Durban on Tuesday 11 March. For details of those gigs, support acts, and where you can buy tickets, see SA Punk in the Live section below or at http://www.SAgigs.com ---------------------- KGB NOW IN P'nP KGB's very popular debut hip hop album, 'The First Born', which until recently was only available in a variety of outlets, including from certain Cape Town Taxi drivers, will now be more widely available at Pick 'n Pay Hypermarkets, and still retailing for under R50. Mothermix Distribution recently closed a distribution and retail deal with retail giant Pick 'n Pay and music distributor Music For Pleasure (MFP). Alexander Gregori, CEO of the Mothermix Group, is striving to bring the price of SA-pressed CDs down to far more reasonable and affordable retail purchase prices, and is thrilled that the retail giant will be stocking the CD. Pick 'n Pay's Braam van Wyk: said: "We obviously have very strict criteria to meet when selecting titles for our stores. Apart from the excellent resumé of KGB's debut album it was really the price that caught our attention, so we're giving this a try. Selling a full album on CD for under R50 does conform with Pick 'n Pay's "We're on Your side" slogan. MFP's Jaun van Lingen added: "We're dealing with all record companies and 2002 was a great year for South African music sales. We're excited to be involved in this project, since a retail price of under R50 for a full 15-track CD is unheard off. We trust that Mothermix Records will really make an inroad here and offer us more good releases at this incredible price". Beeskraal combine traditional Boeremusiek instruments, such as the concertina ("Jong Bees op die pomp") and the banjo, with hardcore punk attitude. He gigged in and around Durban for the next few years with bands like Aquarius, before moving to Cape Town in 1989. Since then he has been playing with various bands like Night Shuttle in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Nuss is about to release his debut EP in the next few weeks, featuring the title track, 'Now That I've Found Your Love'. The EP was arranged by Richard Black of Street Level studios and was engineered and mixed by Black, Chris Tait and James Stewart. The musicians featured on the three-song EP are Peter Cohen (d), Tom Fox (g), Rupert Mellor (k), Nelson Barbosa (b), with James Stewart on backing vocals. A full album is planned for October 2003. Listen http://www.SAmp3.com/streetlevel.html 'Russian and Chips' (demo) - Jack Hammer In 1970 Freedom's Children released the classic 'Astra' album which included the Ramsay Mackay-penned 'The Kid He Came From Hazareth'. (The SA government of the time insisted they change Nazareth to Hazareth - to quote Ripley's: "believe it"!). In 1981 Wildebeest featuring Freedom's drummer Colin Pratley, Boet Faber, Karlien van Niekerk, the late Dave Tarr on violin and one J.P. Botha (better known nowadays as Piet Botha), recorded this song live as 'Russian And Chips' and released it on the 'Bushrock 1' album. This version has long been a part of Piet Botha and Jack Hammer's live repertoire featuring Jonathan "The Kid" Martin on lead vocals. And here is a recent demo recording of Jack Hammer's version of 'Russian and Chips'/'The Kid He Came From Nazareth' which just might appear on the new Jack Hammer album scheduled for October. Rubber Soul (named after the classic Beatles album) gigged around Cape Town in the mid-90s and this track is taken from a recent retrospective CD titled helpfully '1993-1996'. Listen http://www.SAmp3.com 'Wake Up' - Citizen Jones 'Cowboy Ranger' (released on SAmp3.com a couple of weeks ago) was a quiet tribute to Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott. The dynamic Durban band's close interaction with their audiences, coupled with the trademark dreadlocks of brothers Warren and Gary Hiebner, always ensure a wild and heady live show. Entering their second year in this current line-up, Jimmy 12" has been touring South Africa and happily discovering that their support has grown from small groups of people to what is now a steadfast fan base that fills most of the venues in which they perform. Following their 5-track EP, 'Diaphoraspora', Jimmy 12"'s (highly anticipated and long overdue!) debut album, titled '5 Star', is due for current release. '5 Star' will include an interactive CD which will give their fans access to live footage, gig guides and other 12" info. Listen to 'So Many Times' at http://www.SAmp3.com/songs_l_s.html ----------- INTERVIEW ----------- WHO THE F*CK IS MARTIN ROCKA? Carina Laubscher rounded up the sick boys and filed this interview... Early Wednesday morning in Mugg & Bean, Melville. Dude with sunglasses and evil grin goes and gets a refill at the coffee bar. On the back of his black T-shirt: "WHO THE F*CK IS MARTIN ROCKA?"* That's what I want to know. He sits down, between Paulie and James - tells me he's just a guy who digs to stomp around on stage with his mates, jamming out hardcore rock to the brave people, totally nuts about the effect of their music on audiences. There's the grin again - slyly he admits he's on a quest to find his inner selfish. I ask him why the hell are they not on more stages, inflicting the sick boogie therapy on all those pale souls in need? "No man," he mutters. "We don't wanna be everywhere - you can never get used to us." I prod them about 'Product Of Bad Breeding'. James smiles and Paulie looks exceedingly proud when Martin tells me that CD was recorded in four (4) yes - FOUR days. Martin wrote five of them, each one louder than the other, and definitely not to be used as chamber music for his Lordship the Duke of Edinborough. Combine the sound with the look and any lily-livered dweeb will most likely start peeing himself. Martin's got stacks of jackets in various foul-mouthed pimpy colours. His shoes can kill an armadillo. He is the eternal rug rat. One with vision. James is rather yummy and incredibly pristine. Paulie sports angry sideburns and a mean kick-ass moustache right to his jawline, clad in black leather and ice-cool attitude. He should ride a midnight black chopper. Right there on stage. All chrome and thick exhausts chugging out the throaty growls of a hungry black panther. Martin speaks. I get yanked back to reality. There's a new CD, out in March. I probe for details, get zilch. He says something about launching in any other place but a club, but no hint comes forth about bringing hard hats. This launch's going to be one lank bodaciously snazzy event. Watch this space. I ask who drinks the most. Martin sticks out his arms to Paulie and James. "They do!!!" I ask what they like. It's like a chorus: "BEER!!!" Next question - who's got the largest collection of G-strings. They look at me like I'm Carrie Fisher spewing pea soup on a priest. "Whaa ...?" I sympathise profusely and tell them it should have started aeons ago. Girls chucking their panties on stage, stuff like that. Paulie grins: "No man, we just like to see them caught up in wild fits of erotic frenzy." My heart reaches out to these well-adjusted, ambitious and hectically talented young men. They should be vamped into oblivion. When asked about their hidden talents, an intense moment occurs. The only secret snippet is that James plays putt-putt. And Martin plays piano. And knows how to deal with a guitar. Hmm. They know their art, but what's the dream? Paulie gets that glazed look - says he wants to see the world on a Harley. Far out, man. James says he can't really think of something right this minute and his mates kill themselves laughing. Then Martin says he wants to carry on doing what he's doing, rocking people like mad with the music he's kicking with his fellow musos, and being able to do just what he loves for a really looooooong time. Bring it on, boys. We ain't afraid of no James Brown or slimy bloated whale. BRING IT ON. *No asterisk on the T-shirt. Maybe, very soon, you can also BUY one. Cool. (CL) --------------- MORE REVIEWS --------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://www.cd.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________ 4.USA FOR AFRICA ------------------ Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music PIET BOTHA part 2: in English aka JACK HAMMER Jack Hammer, simply put, is my favorite South African band currently on the scene - out of some mighty strong competition, too. Also, Piet and the band are nice guys. The recent line-up variation of the Jack Hammer theme is the talented Jonathan Martin on guitars and vocals; Tertius du Plessis on bass; Paul vd Waal on drums, and Piet on vocals, guitars, piano and harmonica. One can't go wrong with greatest hits albums, and Jack Hammer's 'Anthology' satisfies. I'm in awe of the big, booming rockers like 'Sarajevo', 'Street of Love', and 'Welcome to Azania', and the ballads like 'The Fisherman', 'For Annette', and, especially, 'Liberty' are beautiful. I've said it before and will say it again: on 'Death of a Gypsy', the Gypsy Suite (the middle five songs) is rock art. 'Gypsy' is not happy happy baby baby music, but deep rock about life's darker edges. Then there's Jack Hammer's own 'Bootleg', a live greatest hits, plus the spirited 'Midnight Angels'. Audience participation is in the background without whistling and calling out favorites while I'm trying to enjoy the music. For the completist are multitudinous live appearances. And on SAmp3 are demo tastes of the new works, and even a song by Raven, an early band. Then there's the riotous blast of 'Wildebeest' whereon Piet plays bass. Jack Hammer proves that much can still be done with the rock form by a tight basic rock unit. To my taste, real rock sounds a certain way and this is it. Y'all are so lucky to be able to catch live the rock music of my people. Music from a nice guy in a band with other nice guys. The reason for this limited edition is to give the fans something before being caught up in recorded an album for Capitol in the US. Gosh, they could have called it 'Something For Now'. While Art maintains that this is material recorded since their last album, listening to it, it sounds like it was recorded from August to December. It's also no coincidence that the Counting Crow's frontman has dreadlocks like Art. That should give you an idea of the sound coming from my speakers right now. This album finds the band in a much mellower mood. There are no Like You Madlies and no Paradises in Summertime, but rather, this is a collection of gentle rock songs with Art's vocals approaching Nick Drake fragile at times. However some tracks ('Honest Me' for example) do build up to a point where Art's inner Vedder is let loose. While fans of the rockier side of JJ may be a bit disappointed with this quieter sound, this album could win over new fans. There are some quite beautiful tracks and none more so than Art's paean to Cape Town in 'Table Talk' where he cleverly name checks the Mother City's landmarks with lines such as 'If Table Mountain could talk would she whisper in the Lion's ears, what kind of signal would she give to the hill?' This is done to a tune that is almost more chilled out than the average Capetonian. The album closes with Just Jinger's contribution to the Santa Sessions album in the form of an acoustic version of 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas' which, other than its subject matter fits in well with the feel of the album. I have never been a huge fan of Just Jinger's albums, but this one may turn the tide for me. Its shows Art maturing as a songwriter with an ability to delicately forge a tune. I am not sure how the American market will take to this sound. I suspect the band may need to get back in touch with their heavier side. No matter what, we certainly wish the boys the best of luck in the US of A. Breck had started out life as a technician with the name Gerhard Breker. He won a talent show at which Louis Armstrong appeared as a star guest and went on to have numberous hits in Europe. He is still performing alongside his wife Astrid. 'Needles and Pins' was Smokie's 5th top 5 hit in a row, a run of hits that started in 1975 with 'If You Think You Know How To Love Me'. Smokie had started out as Smokey and were signed to Mickie Most's Rak record label. Despite a renewed challenge by Wings, Clout held the top spot for the 6th straight week. In 1983, Eddy Grant was spending his 6th week at number 1 while FR David remained glued to second spot, having been dislodged from the top by Grant. Hall & Oates made some progress at the expense of Kool & The Gang. Jennifer Warnes & Bill Medley ended their 5 week run at the top in 1988 as new pop sensation Tiffany (where is she now?) ruled the roost. A strong challenge came from another recent US number 1 in the form of Belinda Carlise's 'Heaven Is A Place On Earth'. Carlise had fronted the highly successful all girl group the Go Go's who had had plenty of success earlier in that decade. I have recently relocated to Cape Town and am looking for some established and equipped musicians to start some kind of project with. I am looking for a guitarist and bass guitarist who are experienced in rock music, and who own equipment, to join an original band here in Cape Town. Influences may be that of pearl jam, soundgarden, nine inch nails, U2, filter. Not too sticky on that tho' as long as the person has a lot of talent and motivation for original music. Sawubona Y'all, As a Boer currently living in the US of A, I am continuously amused by what passes for good advertising here. The irony of CCR's 'Fortunate Son' or The Clash's 'London Calling' being used in an ad for a luxury motor car doesn't seem to bother anyone. I have been wondering who the copyright owners of these songs are, and how they can allow the music to be used so "inappropriately". I was really suppressed to hear Qkumba Zoo's 'The Child (Inside)' used in an ad for a resort here in the USA. Mind you, only a very small part of the song, and it took me about a month to realize that it is actually Qkumba Zoo. I hope the owners of the music got their rightful reward. In this post-Napster world, one never knows. Pepe Marais, Pharaoh for the day and frontman by night, led the Egyptian-guised quartet down the Nile, adrift on their passing podium of fresh, light rock. Fans, friends and foreign faces hitched a ride on the enchanting ambience of their casual style. They disappeared behind palm branches for a brief repose and emerged with an even funkier second set. The audience took up the decadent merry spirit; hooliganing around the dance floor. Ripping bass licks from Woody Swart. More vocals from his side too please. Smooth entertainment from THESE dudes! And another styling month at Mercury Lounge. Lindsay Ravenscroft -------------------- COCKTAILS - SHAKEN AND STIRRED JUST A LITTLE Anton Goosen at the L.A. Cocktail Bar, Saturday 22 February 2003 The LA Cocktail Bar was once the Lorne Arms, so it was to familiar surroundings that Anton Goosen returned, having played here last summer. Although he did not have a full band with him this time, he had sufficient to make for a right jol. Mike Rennie on violin, Lise Swart on backing vocals and Schalk Joubert were bathed in the same glow from the halogen lamp as Anton on the small stage. The band were relaxed and oozed confidence as they strode through Anton's hits. The fun the band was having was quickly transmitted to the audience who responded well. The hardcore fans shouting and singing along to favourites while some of the more relaxed punters danced merrily in the bar area at the back. 'Kruidjie-roer-my-nie', 'Boy van die Suburbs' and 'Blommetjie gedenk aan My' tumbled forth from the stage and were greeted with a great singalong, at times the audience even adlibbing a few 'shoo-be-doo's'. Although it seemed to be it was the old TV theme tune 'Trompie en die Boksombender' that got the loudest reaction. Not one to shy away from controversy, Anton made a few attempts to launch into 'Wit Kaffirs van Afrika', but judging from the 'Ag Sies' that went up from someone nearby, the audience weren't ready for this. The song works on the original meaning of Kaffir as being a non-believer in the Muslim faith, but the negative connotations were too strong for the audience, so Anton soon abandoned this, but full marks for at least trying. As the concert drew to an end, the band quickly improvised on the repetitive clapping of the crowd, turning it first into 'We Will Rock You' which melted into the superb bass line from 'Another One Bites the Dust' with a few bars of 'Under Pressure' thrown in for good measure. The Lorne Arms used to have the old South African flag flying, but it was pleasing to note that the change of name brought about an updating of the flag, but when the flag flies at midnight it's time for Die Stem and tonight was no exception, so I guess those few of us Wit Kaffirs in the audience still have to wait awhile before our theme tune will be acceptable. However, one of the big strengths of this band has been their dynamic live shows and tonight was no exception. The small stage at the Walkabout did seem to restrict the band a little, but not enough to detract. The band mixed new material with old favourites, the former being warmly welcomed while the latter received enthusiastic responses. 'Sugarman' with its lengthened cosmic jam bit showed off the group's prowess with their instruments while 'Like You Madly' had the crowd jumping madly and roaring their appreciation. However, one of the biggest cheers of the night went up when Art told the crowd about their deal with Capitol, showing how important the success of a group is to their fans. There was also the traditional and exciting drumming display that has become a trademark of a Just Jinger show, and, for me, was the highlight of the show. Having made it through the show, those who wanted a copy of the limited edition CD on sale had to contend with what could almost be described as Jingermania as people jostled and pushed to get near the band who were signing copies of the CD.
