Their single, 'Open Your Eyes', off the album has hit top spot on MFM radio. 'Open Your Eyes' has already been nominated "Best Hip Hop Song of the Year" by the readers of hip hop e-zines amuseafrica.com and africasgateway.com Alexander Gregori, CEO of the Mothermix Group, commented: "Obviously we're ecstatic about KGB's success, especially because the album has not even been released nation wide. This should give other record companies something to think about. If a totally unknown Hip Hop group can make such inroads in the acceptance by the public in such a short time, maybe it's time to invest more money in South African Hip Hop releases. To our knowledge, the only other release of a South African Hip Hop album over the past 12 months was by Skwatta Kamp. While they too are doing exceptionally well, theirs is an independent, artist driven project". Get more info on KGB and Mothermix Records at www.themothermixgroup.com KGB's debut album "The First Born" is available from Cape Town taxi drivers, selected stores and http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?id=cdmm001 for under R50. -------------------------- PET FLYZ ALBUM COMPLETE - LAUNCH DATE ANNOUNCED South Africa's top Emo-punk act, Pet Flyz, are poised to release their debut full-length album through Intervention Arts. 'Motive For Breathing' is an "emotional" collection of songs showcasing the technical skill and songwriting talent of a band who have grown up through the ranks of punk rawk and emerged as a serious musical force. The album adds a new SA voice to the flourishing Emo scene worldwide, which has recently come to the fore with the successes of bands like Jimmy Eat World and The Juliana Theory. 'Motive For Breathing' will be launched at The Nile Crocodile in Pretoria on Sat 15 Feb with ATFN as support. Entrance fee is R80 and includes a copy of the new CD! --------------------------- SA ROCK DIGEST ON SAfm MOVES TO MONDAYS In line with recent program changes at SAfm, which began last week, Digest co-editor Stephen Segerman will now be presenting his SA music slot on the Bruce Millar Show on a Monday evening between 9 and 10 o'clock. With the daytime slots now all mostly news- and talk- focused, SAfm have rescheduled their evening slots to include more music and special features. The Bruce Millar Show will now be on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9-10pm, followed by Rafe Levine in the 10-12pm slot. In an interesting and welcome move, Leon Economides will be joining Levine on his Friday evening show. Economides will be playing his distinctive rock selections as he did for all those years on the Phil Wright Show, which was recently axed from its late-night 5fm slot. Richard Haslop will be filling the Tuesday night 9-10 slot and repeating his eclectic repertoire on Sunday afternoons (see "Underground Radio" in the Forum below for more SA Radio news). SAfm is at 103-106fm. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.SAmp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES ----------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ Some recent releases on SAmp3.com: 'All You Become' - Starseed Epic rock from Starseed who are currently based in the UK. This track is off their recently released 'Three Point One' EP CD. 'Mag Boogie' - Mike de Jager Mike de Jager plays one mean guitar. 'Medley nr.1' - Anton Goosen Even Afrikaans pop can rock and here's the proof. In 1980 Anton Goosen recorded a medley of some of his most well-known songs. Included here are: 'Blommetjie-Gedenk-Aan-My', 'Mari Van Okanjaberg', 'Byeboerwa' and 'Harlekyn'. Released on Anton's 'Putonnerwater' CD in 1999. 'Otis' - November 5 A song about a lift! "Otis you take me down". Read John Samson's album review below under the "A Naartjie In The UK" section. This spook is gonna get you! Listen to all the mp3s listed above at the biggest South African mp3 website in the world at http://www.SAmp3.com ----- CDs ----- ANIKA - 'KILLING TIME' You'll lose Anika if you listen to 'Killing Time' while clipping your Rottweiler's toenails. Sit down - chill - listen to her. Find her in vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, piano and keyboard. You'll also hear Peter Auret on drums and percussion, Anton Beukes on bass, Albert Frost with his electric machine, Nic le Roux's soprano and tenor saxophones, and Greame Curry's double bass. You have 16 tracks, most of them played previously on tiny stages in Oudtshoorn, Pretoria and Nelspruit. Here you get sharp, feverishly jazzy rhythms, often changing pace in one song, and other songs that kill you with their simple beauty and a voice the colour of honey - but sans the cloying sweetness that numbs the fastidious ear. 'Tommy' takes you first. Simple, strong and short. Anika's voice draws the picture in nuances of innocence. "So he jumps on his bed, and slowly begins to talk, and says his daddy forgot to say goodbye...". This one's almost ethereal, but never placid. 'When It Rains' tweaks around with the rhythm, the soft sax teasing in-between, with Anika happily strumming and taking that voice up, away and back. Other jewels are the cocky 'Content & Real' - "I love sunrise in Pretoria!, Ek's mal oor sunset op Bloubergstrand... It seems I talk in riddles, It seems I'm too difficult to grasp". Listen to the one behind the microphone. When lyrics get lost between drunken conversations and dead brains, the muso will never be heard. "Thousands of eyes are gazing at me, on stage, off stage" - but she never stops singing. There's the achingly beautiful 'Misty Weather' with its sad sighs from the sea's belly - "I'll just wear you down like my undercoat, Or my deepsea waterboat". 'Flower Picking' refuses (charmingly so) to conform. "I beat you baby, Do you hate me now?" talks in an apparently manic pulse, but you get stuck on the perky tongue of her guitar. "I'm bursting with laughter, No I can't go any faster, I'm stuck, I'm f*cked, My luck is nowhere 2B found". Check out the mellow reggae snippet in 'Medusa'. But don't chill too long with this one. Anika put a few rapids just around the corner. 'Bluntly' gives you an amazingly yummy piano morsel, presented in funky fusion with the fresh voice. Beware. This song you might want to inhale every day. Same goes for 'I Slowly Push'. Effortlessly she takes you up and down the ladder with a bunch of notes trained specifically to inflict the pain of good music. You hear peaks and lows, never fuzzy - "Now let's blow the candles out, And focus on what's really going on..." Focus on fearless words, individuality and a uniqueness in her voice as clear as the hand-written lyrics. The vacuum of conformity stops here. Listen to the mp3 of 'Content and Real' at http://www.SAmp3.com Buy http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=OBR01 (Carina Laubscher) ---------------------- HALF PRICE - 'BUSH, BIN LADEN AND MY MOM'S NOUGHT' As the words "All I wanna f**king do is play in my punk rock band" blare out of my hi-fi all, I wanna do is get up skank like there is no tomorrow. This CD contains all of the Half Price favourites from 'I Drink All Day' - a song about drinking all day and falling over - to 'I Guess it's War', a very serious song about all the political and social problems that we face in today's society. The CD is peppered with little tracks that have been ripped from the radio, which serve to make the CD very funny (like almost every thing Half Price do). The more you listen to the CD the more you realise that Half Price are really just a bunch of misfit punk rockers who love what they do, and do it rather well, the way punk rock should be. I think of writing: this is a worthy addition to your collection and no self-respecting SA punk should be without a copy..... then I think naaah! that's stupid, so instead I get back to the sounds of Half Price doing what they do best... playing great SA punk rock. 7/10 (DN) If you would like to get hold of a copy of the Half Price CD Please email: mailto:grypet006@mail.uct.ac.za or mailto:drunkpunk@thepub.co.za ------------------------ TOO OLD TO ROCK - 'TOO DUMB TO QUIT' For once, a band's name and album title that are honest! Too Old To Rock is the group formed in 2002 by Jim Reindel and Chris Hattingh (both on acoustic and electric guitars, with Hattingh on drums and bass). Hattingh is an ex-Durbanite now living in Florida, USA. He previously played the Durban scene with musicians like Denny Lalouette, Keith Henderson, Mark Kahn, Graeme Currie, Johnny Fourie, Howard Belling, and Jethro Butow in bands like The Palm Boat Band, Truth, Fagan, Tangent and Freewheel. Too Old To Rock's debut album, 'Too Dumb To Quit', was released in December 2002, and features the 12 all-instrumental tracks, primarily in a progressive hard rock vein (the old kind!), with a few excursions into funk, acoustic balladry, shred metal, psychedelic rock and exotic eastern-flavored music. Their songs have titles like 'Pass The Geritol' {from the left hand side maybe? - ed.}, 'Second Mortgage Blues', 'Dance Of The Coffin Dodgers', 'Viagra Falls' {okay we get the picture - Ed.}. This is beautiful rock, not prettified or pansy-colored fluff, but honest rock with drums, bass, a huge guitar, and a lovely voice up front. Sometimes thoughtful and thought-provoking, other times loud and big. For years I've cruised the Texas Hill Country with Off the Edge, hearing the musicians mature and grow from sophisticated bar band to architectural rock outfit, building cathedrals of sound with guitar, buttressed by bass, grounded with drums, and overflown by soaring female vocals. By musicians I mean primarily Peter Hanmer and Tony Groenwald. Peter started in a band called Boss and an early version of Off the Edge. Sometimes including other musos, Off the Edge primarily has been Peter Hanmer on guitars and keyboards, Tony Groenewald on bass, and Judy Marshall-Schutte or Giselle Mynhardt singing, with Sherry Lee-Jones on Age of Innocence's 'Nowhere Land'. Also in the Off the Edge oeuvre, two CDs of the Off the Edge rock music sans singing, the aptly titled 'The Instrumentals' and the similarly monikered, 'The Instrumentals Volume 2'. I don't know which version of his songs could be considered for the purists, with singing or without singing, but both are creative achievements of monumental proportions. So listen to Off the Edge and Age of Innocence. Start with the recent 'Unfinished Business' or 'The Instrumentals Volume 2' and work backwards. Feel the inspiring music, and think inspired thoughts. Now I must confess that as a lightie I was dead scared of fireworks and would not go outside and watch the ones that made big bangs, but did venture out to hold the occasional sparkler. Maybe that is why this album appeals hugely to me. It's not about big bangs but rather takes a gentler approach to lighting up you life. Okay, so maybe that sounds a little bit lightweight, and yes this is not an album for hardcore Nirvana fans, but may find favour with Nick Drake fans. Abraham, he that is November 5, has a delicate voice that is wrapped in the cotton wool of the gentle at times orchestral instrumentation. He has a good ear for great tunes and has been able to flesh these out with a full sound that draws you into the music. Probably the quietest track is track 5, simply entitled 'Five' which consists of about 2 seconds of silence. Other quiet tracks are the lilting 'Grand Parade' and the gentle 'Wish You Were Here' (not a Floyd cover), while there are some more upbeat tracks like the opener 'Otis' which has a strong, catchy chorus and 'Tell' which builds up around a relaxed Joshua Tree guitar. '617' is not just a number and November 5 is not just Guy Fawkes night, this is a rather special album by an unassuming talent that needs more exposure. Despite the picture of a mermaid on the cover, there is nothing fishy about this album other than that it was recorded in Fishhoek. With it's finely crafted songs, delivered in a beautiful, full bodied manner, you'll be pleased to remember the fifth of November. A SPACEMAN CAME TRAVELING.... The first wave of stargazing came to light most likely through Syd Barrett's 'Astronomy Domine', 'Interstellar Overdrive' and 'Set the Controls For The Heart of the Sun' (written by Waters) via the mystic trips of Pink Floyd. The spaceships had already hovered over Psychedelia and a landing was imminent. During the wake of the seventies the free flowing spirit of the hippies had given way to the power of the Mellotron and the Moog. Minimalism had finally come of age and supergroups like Yes, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Genesis and Caravan erected their gothic cathedrals and empowered the masses with a blend of classical and rock. Beneath the complex strains of progressive rock a glittering embryo of spacemen had arrived. These silvery costumed aliens with painted faces would remind us of life on another planet. Their glam significance, although short-lived, would enshrine a period that we could never return, but the galactic power of this cosmic vibration would instil the new romantic fervour into the eighties. Like all genres there has to be a birth so let us begin with a spaceman lost in his shuttle, gazing at the ozone blue earth and knowing he would never return ('Space Oddity'). The birth of 'Space Oddity' in parallel with Neil Armstrong's moonwalk happened in 1969. The song's emotive arrangement and mellotron washed keyboards by Rick Wakeman were sheer progressive wonder. Bowie's songwriting and arrangement of this epic were literally heralding the NASA achievement. The aliens were coming and from the North they landed in the form of Be-Bop Deluxe. This was primarily Scotland's greatest thrust with guitarist Bill Nelson slicing into the charts with 'Jet Silver and the Dolls of Venus'. Glam or scam, close encounters of the third kind would continue to transgress the seventies. Marc Bolan, who had left John's Children and Tyrannosaurus Rex, glided into the charts with the space aged 'Cosmic Dancer', while David Bowie kept the message with the thought provoking 'Starman', courtesy of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Pink Floyd visited the dark side of the moon and Golden Earring caught the tan. Moonage daydreams were boundless as they skipped the Milky Way, eventually finding transmission on our wireless sets. Santana went one step further by releasing another self-titled album with a magnificent apparition of a man in space. Star sickness had arrived with Steve Hillage of Gong launching his eleven-minute 'Lunar Music Suite' on his underrated 'L' album. South African Manfred Mann powered into the progressive arena with his Earth band on the stellar 'Solar Fire' album exuding prophetic 'Pluto The Dog' and eerie 'Saturn'. Deep Purple kept the comets rolling with the power driving 'Fireball' and 'Space Truckin'' while the globe's most underrated progress-band Captain Beyond kept the shuttle afloat with 'Drifting In Space', 'As The Moon Speaks (to the waves of the sea)' and 'Space Interlude'. In 1975 the cosmic fire burned even brighter with Todd Rundgren's 'Initiation'. These were probably some of the finest landings from the great unknown. So away with 'Bennie and the Jets', 'Ballroom Blitz' and "The glitters of Gary" but rather give me 'See To The Stars' by Andromeda featuring the awesome vocals of ex-Atomic Rooster John Du Cann. Or the galaxy's tour de force epic 'Justin And Nova' which tells of alien abduction by the Exa planes. This was space rock complexity in its supremacy as displayed by the Zionist group Jericho. Lastly, as if to leave the planet for all time, we settle on the tip of Africa and wave our hands to 'ZX Dan' by the Radio Rats. This fine epitaph that landed in the South African charts in 1979 will probably return with gifts for the future. ----------------------- SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS http://www.cd.co.za/charts This week [Last week] Title - Artist 30 YEARS AGO (9 February 1973) 1 [1] I'd Love You To Want Me - Lobo 2 [2] Woman (Beautiful Woman) - Don Gibson 3 [3] I Don't Wanna Play House - Barbara Ray 4 [4] I Can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash 5 [6] Dreams Are Ten A Penny - Kincade 25 YEARS AGO (10 February 1978) 1 [1] Subsitute - Clout 2 [2] It's Heartache - Bonnie Tyler 3 [4] Free Me - Uriah Heep 4 [7] You Light Up My Life - Debby Boone 5 [6] How Deep Is Your Love - Bee Gees 20 YEARS AGO (11 February 1983) 1 [1] I Don't Wanna Dance - Eddy Grant 2 [2] Words - FR David 3 [4] Let's Go Dancing (Ooh La La La) - Kool & The Gang 4 [5] Heartbreaker - Dionne Warwick 5 [3] The Clapping Song - Belle Stars 15 YEARS AGO (13 February 1988) 1 [1] (I've Had) The Time Of My Life - Jennifer Warnes & Bill Medley 2 [2] Mony Mony - Billy Idol 3 [3] Never Gonna Give You Up - Rick Astley 4 [7] Always On My Mind - Pet Shop Boys 5 [4] Faith - George Michael Kincade was actually a guy called John Kincade from the UK. His 1973 hit 'Dreams Are Ten A Penny' was his only hit in South Africa a feat he failed to accomplish in either the US or his native UK. Lobo meanwhile enjoyed his 5th week at the top and Barbara Ray was stuck at 3. Clout clung to the number 1 spot in 1978, seeing off strong competition from Bonnie Tyler. 'It's a Heartache' was a rather apt title for Tyler's second number 2 hit, and she would have to wait 5 more years before hitting the top of the SA charts. Debby Boone was the daughter of 50's star Pat Boone. She spent 10 weeks at the top of the US charts with 'You Light Up My Life' which was from a movie of the same name. The Bee Gees were starting to have hits form the extremely popular movie 'Saturday Night Fever'. 1983's top 5 didn't have much movement. Local interest was to be found further down the charts where Lloyd Ross was lurking with his rather marvellous guitar instrumental theme tune to the popular TV series 'Vyfster'. The Pet Shop Boys had proven themselves as purveyors of intelligent pop. Their third straight top 5 hit was a cover of the song that both Elvis and Willie Nelson had made popular. Local act Cinema had come close to a top 5 hit the previous week, but dropped from number 6 to number 9 this week in 1988 with their hit 'My Kinda Girl'. Despite what most right-thinking people in South Africa believe, listening to the radio is not a pastime reserved for those people among us who have a deficiency in the taste department. Admittedly, most Alternative-minded people would rather mutilate their genitals with a rusty bread knife than listen to the radio, but that's because they don't know when to listen... For a while now there have been several DJs around South Africa playing something other than vapid pseudo-music from several genres not favoured by daytime playlisters. And you've been ignoring them. Shame on you. But here's your opportunity to tune in, turn on, and go out with a cop. Or something. Barney Simon: Okay, odds are you have heard of him. Legendary supporter and promoter of all things alternative, Barney is a veteran of S.A. radio and his show has recently (sadly) been moved to Sunday nights between 17:00 and 19:00 on 5fm. Barney is da bomb. Lest we forget. Jean-Pierre: Tuks FM (currently only available in the greater Pretoria area, but watch this space...) is Gauteng's top Rock station and still has some Alternative DJs playing everything from Punk and Ska to Hardcore, EBM, Industrial and Goth. Jean-Pierre has been doing it for years and still plays the best variety of Alternative music out there. Richard Haslop knows a scary amount about music you didn't know existed. From middle-Asian folk music to Alternative Country and Lo-Fi, 'Roots To Fruits', his show on SAfm (104-107), will teach you more than anything else on radio about the real underground. Catch him in a new slot on Tuesday night, 9pm and a repeat at 3pm on Sunday. Highly recommended. Richard Maspero: Late night radio in Stellenbosch would not be the same without Alternative Night Radio. MFM hosts a new time slot for ANR: Wednesdays at 00:30. Tune in for the darker side of music. Any help will be appreciated. These all come from the Springbok Hits series of the 70'/80's: 'A Whole Lot Of Woman' (S Hits 30) 'Candy Lips' (not the one by Doris Day) (S Hits 21) 'Over And Over Again' (Is this by Daniel Boone?) (S Hits 9) I am also looking for 'Scooby Dooby Dum Dum Day' by The Attractions. Does anyone know where I can find this song and the others above? Also if anyone wants any info about the Springbok hits series I am willing to help. Thanks Kobus mailto:jgb1900@freemail.absa.co.za -------------------- SPRINGBOK HITS PART 2 Can you help? Are any of those fabulous old Springbok Hits LP's from the 70s and 80s available on CD? Where can I find them? Hugely grateful for any suggestions. Anne Stanford mailto:Hgstanford@aol.com {Ed's note: The Springbok Series recently released by Gallo on CD has nothing to do with the old series except the covers featuring scantily clad women.} -------------------- OH PETERSEN BROTHERS WHERE ART THOU? Hello! I wonder if you could be of assistance. I am looking for information on The Three Petersen Brothers. I think one of the brothers, Andy (Andrew?) married a BBC Television Dancer in the late 50's and we then heard that they had gone back to South Africa. I am trying to trace the lady concerned, her name was Angela Bradshaw. I have scoured the web for info on the Brothers, and can only find one reference to a record called 'Fanagalo', and another reference to Wally, who married Betty Driver, a UK Television actress. Do you know if the group can be contacted at all? My mother Daphne was also a dancer in the same Television Show, and has been in contact with all the original members, and Angela Bradshaw is the last member of the troupe to find. If you can point me in the right direction for further contacts with The Petersen Brothers I would be very grateful. Thank you. Tragedy has chosen the music scene again. Energetic UTOC rocker, Dale, and his girlfriend, Cindy, died in a car crash last weekend. Louise of Quzo (currently in the U.K.) puts it best when she says "Let's hope he's in guitar heaven with a Les Paul, a Fender Stack and unlimited jamming time". After a long time knocking at the door, Spoon Feedas have finally delivered their debut CD. 'True North' is a solid production that contains the popular songs 'Alone' and 'King With A Crown'. Having gained a new lead singer in the form of Peter Guthrie, sponsorship from Life Clothing and D2 Squared, and distribution by Legend Music, Spoon Feedas have got their act sorted so that we can expect to hear a lot more about them. Theatrical rock band Seven 13 will be leaving the States for the welcoming arms of South Africa's April month.
