SA Rock Hall Of Fame http://www.sarockdigest.com/halloffame SA Rock Digest Archives http://www.sarockdigest.com/archives ---------------------- FINCH AND HENSON REUNION CONCERT Kenneth Edward (aka Ken E or Kenny) Henson has been around since the 60s playing in bands like Freedoms Children, Abstract Truth and Harambee. This collaboration with Kenny led to a very successful career for the duo known simply as Finch and Henson. Brian and Kenny played together recently in Durban to capacity sell-out crowds and standing ovations. Now they are playing 2 gigs in Cape Town. The shows will include solo material from Brian including songs off his recent 'Hero for Heroes' CD. Tracks off Ken E's third and latest album 'Another Time, Another Place' will also be featured, plus of course, all the classic Finch and Henson songs like 'Oh Brother', 'Kokstad' (the ultimate "road" song), 'Operator', 'Free and Easy' and the brilliant surfing classic 'Playgrounds in Paradise'. IS BACK! Steve Newman - Tony Cox - Chris Tokalon Steve Newman and Tony Cox are household names in South Africa for their great friendship and musical partnership that has seen two decades of performance together. Several years ago Chris Tokalon - a musician/comedian/mime-artist, sound journey therapist/skrumunkle and old friend - fell into this already heady mix and the show 'Don't Tune Us, We'll Tune You' was born. A mixture of wacky humour, brilliant guitar/flute/sax playing, some crazy props (like a toy guitar) and lots of irreverent takes on golden oldies. This show plays to packed houses wherever it goes and has people holding their sides with laughter and being amazed at the standard of musicianship at the same time. If you love your music played really excellently combined with large doses of runaway humour, do all in your power to start the year off with a laugh and not miss this 2-nights-only show. Fri 3/4 Jan 2003 - Ford Little Theatre Computicket 20h00 Steve Newman and Tony Cox are also reprising their Durban run, see 'Concerts' below ---------------------- THE (SECOND) VARIETY SHOW At The Labia, Cape Town - Sunday 15 Dec Following the initial successful District Six-themed Variety Show at the Labia Theatre a few weeks back, Brian Weinronk and Beverley Gough are hosting the second one on Sunday 15th December. The programme for the 15th will showcase a similarly diverse cocktail of local talent. The Swamp Funk Quartet top the bill with funky guitar-based music. SFQ is Ted Baumann (ex-Woodshed) on guitar and vocals, Tom Fox (Bright Blue, ex-The Usual) on guitar, Paul Tizzard on drums and Yoyo Buys on bass (both ex-The Usual). The other musical slot is filled by Robert Sithole, "the best pennywhistler in the world", playing with guitarist Wandi Holo. His solo piece, with gravel voice singing and virtuoso pennywhistling playing with the Goema Captains at the last show brought the house down, and this prompted the organisers to include him on the bill. This will be followed by well known comedienne Stacey Sacks performing a crazy performance poetry piece backed by music composed by Jeremy de Tolley. After the interval, where food and drinks will be served, the movie segment of the evening begins. Short films by award-winning final year students at CityVarsity will be screened. All this creative energy will be pulled together by Master (Mistress) of Ceremonies, Cape Talk's Lisa Chait. And all door proceeds go towards the Music Library for street children now at the Clarrie Care Centre in Claremont. Admission is R30. Doors open 8pm, and the show begins at 8.30pm. Pre-bookings may be made at the Sunflower Restaurant at 111 Long Street. (tel 424 6560.) For any further enquiries, please contact: Smoke Signals, Brian Weinronk Tel. 021 461 9152 or 0823786636. mailto:varietyshow@kingsley.co.za --------------------- THE HOUSE OF USHER No not that Usher! Graham Weir has written original lyrics and music for this Chris Weare adaptation of the Edgar Alan Poe story. Additional music has been penned by Derek Olivier. Sven Golden handles musical arrangements and Chris Weare directs the cast - Graham Weir, Keren Tahor and Warrick Grier and musicians - Simon Ratcliffe and Sven Goldin. In this gothic horror story about the defunct band, 'The House of Usher', we follow the decline and apparent death of Usher's sister Madeline, her burial and her resurrection with all the consequent madness, passion, betrayal, love, incest, and live music imaginable in 75 minutes. The House of Usher is a must for theatre lovers. There will be only 8 performances of the show in South Africa before its planned run in the Czech Republic so don't miss out!! Performance dates 11th Dec to 14 Dec and 18th Dec to 21st Dec at 8.30pm. To book phone Susan Cole @ 021 480 7129 during office hours. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.samp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES ----------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ 'Dolly Mae' - Blues Broers The Blues Broers have been playing their own original blues songs since the early 90s. 'Dolly Mae' is off 1995's 'Sharp Street' CD which was produced by "Meneer Volume" himself, Willem Möller. 'A Million Miles' - The Space Committee A spacey, folky fusion of acoustica and electronica from the trio of Garth Luke, Alex Davidson and Matthew Marinus and produced by Grannysmith's Adrian Shannon. 'Nothing On' - Padded Room Padded Room hail from Sweden, and are named after a Radio Rats song! This is not so surprising when you discover that the driving force behind Padded Room is ex-Radio Rats, Corporal Punishment and The Softies bassist and guitarist, David 'Herbie' Parkin. The Britpoppish 'Nothing On' is off Padded Room's 'Love And Alcohol' CD released last year. 'Rock and Roll Man' - Bedrock Name-checking easy rock song from the Band in the Sand. Bedrock hail from Oranjemund, Namibia. An original composition with a retro style and feel. 'Wasted Time' - Illana May 'Wasted Time' is a self-composed bouncy country rock song from Umtata's Illana May. Taken off her 'I've Gotta Try' CD released by Yellow Rose Records. 'What Do I Do Now' - Sonja Herholdt So you think Sonja Herholdt sings only saccahrine-sweet Afrikaans pop like 'Jantjie' and 'Ek Verlang Na Jou'? Well, think again. 'What Do I Do Now' is a song about a woman in pain and Jim Steinman would have proud of this production by the guys from Spiral Staircase. Taken off the 'Reconstructing Alice' CD. 'When I Grow Up' (sampler) - Guy Buttery The December issue of SL magazine rates this instrumental guitar album by 18-year old Guy Buttery very highly. Take a listen to this sampler and hear for yourself. 'With You' (demo) - Dayspring More guitar rock from the guys who brought us 'Psycoparalysis'. We are watching this band very closely. http://www.samp3.com ----- CDs ----- 'SKOUSPEL! 2002' and 'AFRIKAANS MET ATTITUDE' CDs from 2 opposite ends of the South African musical scale have recently been released through Select Music. 'Skouspel! 2002' is a 2CD set with 34 songs from such diverse performers as Die Grafsteensangers (are they for real?), Amanda Strydom, Mimi Coertse, Cutt Glas, Steve Hofmeyr, Yvonne Chaka Chaka, Eden, Dozi and Kurt Darren. There is no denying the pop appeal of Juanita Claasen's 'Ska-Rumba' or Jannie Moolman's 'Valencia'. The old Clout pop classic 'Substitute' is covered by Shine4, and Yvonne Chaka Chaka breathes new life into the PJ Powers/Steve Kekana hit 'Feel So Strong'. Karen Zoid also makes an appearance, though with her style she should probably have been on the 'Afrikaans Met Attitude' CD! Possibly her band, who drink water and eat salad burgers (see http://www.karenzoid.co.za/huisgenoot.htm), have given her a new clean-cut image. Or maybe not. 'Afrikaans Met Attitude' is a great compilation of rock with Afrikaans lyrics. Almost all the Afrikaans Rockers are here; Koos Kombuis, Johannes Kerkorrel, Akkedis, Beeskraal, Spinnekop, Brixton Moord en Roof Orkes and more. Battery 9 take a leaf out of the Koos Kombuis songbook and sing a song about life on 'Kakstraat'. The chart-topping 'Hoenderman' by Kobus! is also on this CD. And newcomers Tynhys rock really hard with 'Stilte Voor Die Storm' which I hadn't heard before, but is already a personal favourite. Both CDs are recommended, but proceed with caution; 'Skouspel!' might be too poppy for some and 'Afrikaans Met Attitude' might just have too much attitude for some tastes. Here is rock in evolution with a new voice, while remaining praiseworthy in the old American Bandstand tradition: "I give it a ten, it sounds cool and you can dance to it." Uptempo rockers serve for musical mountains, other songs are aural landscapes of male voices floating in front of guitars, inspiring a sense of rock wonder at these now-controversial rock wonders, Theo Crous and Francois Blom. I also appreciate musos who play original music with awareness of their musical history and traditions. That's why I get such a big kick out of the first tune, 'Wie is Kobus?', a song that name-checks dozens of South African performers, past and present, such as Glenys Lynne, Piet Botha, Koos Kombuis, Min Shaw, Gert Potgieter, and so on. So, of the music, it's stylistically unified variety. Some wacky, radio-friendly rock tunes mingle with a number album-oriented songs. Kobus is not Boeremusiek ruk 'n rol without an accordion, but it is part of the cool Afrikaner rock consciousness as performed by Koos Kombuis, Piet Botha, Valiant Swart, Beeskraal, and others. Of some of the songs, 'Aardskok' is melodic vocals and a simple catchy rhythm, about earthquakes and love. Like several of the songs on the CD. 'Sondagmiddag' is a drifting, lovely mood piece about lazing about at home with the extended family. 'Hoenderman', a wild number wherein guitars licks duel with chickens. 'Gee Raat!' ends the CD with a whirlwind of musicianship and studio skill. There's nothing plastic about the music, though in performance, 'Jou Oë' has Francois eyeing his stage girlfriend. But that is consensual, there is nothing violent about the music. Lovely, odd, rocking, and lovely again, 'Kobus' rocks, flows, and keeps me listening. Who is Kobus? A pair of talented rock musicians who I hope keep making CDs like this one, and even better. Go well, be well, do well, guys. However, the three Snakeshed albums all show an Oriental influence and none more so than Music for Shogun. I believe that this album was inspired by the TV series Shogun that starred Richard Chamberlain. The album opens with a keyboard driven instrumental that features a woman speaking a little bit of Japanese. The piece is flighty and spacey, reminiscent of Vangelis, but with more of an eastern sound to it. Throughout the album the music remains slightly ethereal, which makes for an atmospheric and mystic feel. And it is the music that dominates. Vocals are used sparingly, allowing the musicians space to explore and create. Perhaps the most vocal intensive and hardest rocking track is 'Kamakura Dragons' which also appeared on the classic 'Classic Epics'. This song features a searing guitar that battles against a passionate almost screeched vocal. It's a hard fought battle with the guitar narrowly winning on points, but leaving the vocals with their honour in tact and the listener looking forward to the return match. Although 'Karmakura Dragons' is the hardest rocking track, one can in no way regard the album as raucous. The rock here is finely controlled, and laid back. It seems that Linnegar took the Eagles seriously when they told us to 'Take it Easy' as that is what he does. However, he does it in a more meditative way than bands of the Eagles ilk did. There are spoken parts in some of the tracks, talking of samurai and Zen Masters. The deep voice that delivers these pieces has a wonderful resonance, which is slightly spoilt by the South African accent. Not that I have a problem with the accent, but it seems at odds with the Japanese feel of the album. Overall this album has the feel associated with the beauty of the Japanese countryside and the spiritual meditative side of Oriental culture. This is more geisha than sumo. Frenzel Rhomb, probably the most wacked out punk band ever, are going to be visiting us from Down Under and we are finally going to get a Fat Wreck band in South Africa. They will be playing seven shows in South Africa, in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. They might play some other shows but those still need to be confirmed. The venues for these shows and their dates will be released later along with information on where to get tickets. ------------ GIG REPORT ------------ This report was written by one of our fellow SA punks who was lucky enough to have seen Fuzigish in action overseas. Venue: Downe House School Hall, Middle-of-*******-nowhere, Oxfordshire, England Bands: Skirtbox, Fireapple Red, The Bombjacks, Fuzigish Right, so they said it was in Oxford, right? Well they were ***** lying. It was at least an hour's travelling from Oxford. But hey, it was fun. The show was held at an all-girls school and thus the audience consisted entirely of under-age beauties. Fuzigish were given the privilege of headlining the show. Wow! Let me first say that the guys are definitely showing the effects of touring for more than two months. Skankin' Daddy had a nice black eye courtesy of Rob Dog, and the back window of their van was missing, contents being held in perilously by a lattice of small branches and a veneer of plastic. I was so glad that they had rested their weary bodies, because they were able to deliver their Fat Ska Beatin' without compromise. I don't know what it was. Maybe it was the fact that I hadn't had space to skank it up properly at all the British shows I'd been to so far. Maybe it was because I hadn't seen Fuzi for so long. Maybe it was because I was staring at an avenue of underage posteriors. Maybe it was because it was such a ***** mission getting there. Maybe it was all these things, but this was one of the best shows I've seen Fuzi do. Ever! From start to finish my body was acting as though sudden bolts of electricity were being shot through it. This is the madness that belongs to Fuzigish. Perhaps I am being biased. Perhaps I want to believe that it was as good for everyone else as it was for me, but the whole room seemed to be in frenzy. Maybe it had more to do with ZOLtan being topless but the girls really seemed to be enjoying themselves. Completely eating it up. and a brilliant choice for headliners. And this is the thing that is wonderful about Fuzi. Somehow their sound is completely accessible to people who may not like punk, and yet they are a definite favourite of any SA punk. It's good to see, and good to hear. Well Done. Need we say more? ------------- LIVE REVIEW ------------- PUNKS IN KLAPMUTS: The 3rd Mother City Alliance Gig By Lindsay Ravenscroft - 30th November 2002 Three chicks cruising in the country by the light of flickering, far-spaced street lamps. We pull up outside the small town's apparently only bar to get directions. An invitingly banal wooden exterior. The only person privy to the information is the hippy. Something... landing. We give our best used-car-salesman smiles and get what we want. Then we flee before the overly curious bar furbishing become animate. As we stride inside, our timing is perfect. The Rudimentals have just begun their set. We greet them with a smile and get absorbed by the time warp of the 'lang-arm' dance hall. The walls glare back at us, only a light coat of dust separating us from them. Blank. Not one useful sex tip. Less than an hour outside Cape Town, at the beginning of the wine district, the Mother City Alliance takes to the backwoods for their third concert. On the Blair Witch's top 10 list for sure. A great turnout, half of them familiar faces, the other half, aspiring local delinquents. The audience is eager and excitable. Like a garden gnome set free in Knysna forest. The fresh, energetic atmosphere charges up the bands in turn. Good old-fashioned Duracell bunny bedlam. The Rudi's deliver their cheerful ska-reggae sound passionately as usual, keeping up their excellent level of music. The perfect catalyst to an extraordinary evening. The cows catapulted themselves over the moon. Excellent sound all around. The Hogs are up next. George, the frontman for the renowned and happily infamous group, whips the crowd into a moshpit maelstrom. Frenzied and as fanatically rude as ever. A couple of 'mallets' pop around the corner to witness the punk circus first hand. Oh please don't wink at me, that's so gross. They should've just used the tried and tested "Want to race my motor" line. The keys would have been mine in a second. And they'd have been left choking in the dust. Bring on the dirt roads! Following Hog Hoggidy Hog on the stage is the fast and furious New World Inside. Very tight. Breaking speed punk records and unsuspecting hearts. Great to see such supportive fans. The three chicks by then had had their fill of drunk punks and barnyard bewilderment, and head back into the night. Hmm what a great location! Quaint and obscure, or rather, "Hey I've never had a bar tab here before!" The song was LM Radio's song of the year 1972. 20 years later they were charting with 'You Win Again'. The arrival of the Bee Gees in the top 5 ended a second spell in the top 5 by 'I Need Someone' by Alan Garrity. The first run had lasted 10 weeks while this second run lasted 6. Heart's 'Barracuda' was into it's 3rd week at the top but looked like being caught by McCully Workshop who edged closer to the top spot in 1977 as 'Buccaneer' climbed from 3 to 2. 'Angelo' by Brotherhood of Man gallantly clung on for a 10th week in the top five, a run which had included 2 weeks at 1. The song would end up as the 13th biggest of the year. Dexy's Midnight Runner's had only spent 2 weeks at number 1 with 'Come on Eileen' before they where upstaged by FR David. David was born on New Year's Day in 1947 and had worked with the likes of Vangelis, the Doobie Brothers and Toto before having the world wide smash with 'Words'. Olivia Newton-John was enjoying a bit of a revival when 'Physical' topped the US charts. The song stalled at number 11 in SA, but he follow up 'Heart Attack' went top 5. The Belle Stars where riding high with a take of Shirley Ellis's 'The Clapping Song'. 'La Bamba' spent it's 8th week at the top in 1987. Rick Astley had charged into the top 5 at the beginning of November, then flittered around the number 4 and 5 positions before suddenly making a late charge for the top.
