Kerkorrel (real name Ralph John Rabie) was found hanged in Kleinmond in the Western Cape last week. The 42-year old had emerged from those revolutionary Voëlvry years - as part of the Gereformeerde Blues Band and in tandem with Koos Kombuis and James Phillips - to build a solid and impressive catalogue of albums and songs, and a strong and loyal following in SA and in the Benelux countries. Listen to the 'JK Voëlvry' mp3; a special sampler of 30 second snippets of 6 Johannes Kerkorrel songs off the 'Voëlvry - Die Toer' CD released by Sheer Sound earlier this year. Read http://www.cd.co.za/legends/jk Listen http://www.samp3.com/favourites.html#link8 John Mair, the legendary Cape Town guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and founder of the group Sweatband, was killed in a car accident on Sunday 10 November while travelling to a gig at Gecko's in Hermanus. Sweatband, with John Mair and the band's vocalist Wendy Oldfield, recently made a heralded re-appearance at the 94.7Fm 'Heritage' Concert in Gauteng. To add immensely cruel irony to the sadness, Mair had recently been intensely involved in overseeing and preparing the long-awaited RetroFresh CD reissue of the band's classic album, scheduled for release last week. Benjy Mudie of RetroFresh said that "John Mair was regarded by all in the industry as a musician`s musician... a hugely talented songwriter who wrote the band`s many hits, a dynamic live performer and possibly one of the finest guitarists ever. He will be remembered for his absolute passion for, and his dedication to, the music of this country and his influence on countless young musicians will stand as a monument to his artistry. In the words of the Sweatband song... its time to 'sleep like a child'. Thanks for the music John". The SA Rock Digest extends its sincerest condolences to all the family and friends of Johannes Kerkorrel and John Mair. ------------------------- THE VARIETY SHOWS AT THE LABIA Brian Weinronk and Beverley Gough are hosting 'The Variety Show' in the main theatre at the Labia Theatre, in Orange Street on Sunday November 24 (8pm). The initial fortnightly event will kick off with a District Six-themed evening with music by the Goema Captains, followed by a mystery interview, and then some movies and memories, all relating to slices of life of this special community which was forcibly removed from the city during the apartheid era. Capetonians have a special relationship with the Labia. From its earliest days as a ballroom, then a live theatre and now as a cinema, The Labia has a history of entertainment, re-inventing itself as times change. The old fashioned variety shows, so popular in District Six, established the reputations of many musicians and entertainers, with their live performances before an enthusiastic audience as a prelude to a 'night at the bioscope'. The organisers are hoping to resurrect this concept in a contemporary form, with live performances and material unlikely to be seen anywhere else, followed by unusual, locally made movies. Among the main aims of The Variety Show are to use all proceeds taken at the door to enlarge the library of musical instruments, now at the Clarrie Centre of Care, for the use of street children. The organisers are also looking to heighten awareness of the plight of the Cape Town street children and encourage the many efforts being made to rehabilitate them. The library of musical instruments, a first for this country, was initiated after the successful 'Mountain of Music' benefit concert in April, co-hosted by Venessa Nolan and Smoke Signals, when a considerable sum was raised to buy instruments for street children. The Clarrie Centre of Care in Claremont took on the project with gusto, and a small library of instruments has been established at their premises, and is already in enthusiastic use. See 'Concerts' below for details. --------------------- CLEGG AT THE BAXTER Johnny Clegg, star of the Jerry Springer Show, and known to some of his fans as "The White Zoeliek", will be singing, dancing and stamping great holes in the stage at The Baxter Theatre in Cape Town from November 26 to December 7. I'd book as soon as possible if I were you. ------------------- 'ZIMBABWEAN RUINS' COMES TO CAPE TOWN Zimbabwean rock outfit Mann Friday will be bringing their acclaimed 'Zimbabwe Ruins' show to Cape Town for a three-night run at the Independent Armchair Theatre on Tues 19th, Wed 20th and Thurs 21st November. 'Zimbabwean Ruins' is a white boy's story of his life in Zimbabwe, portrayed through narrative, song and background imagery. The production was a sell-out sensation at the recent Grahamstown Festival and is being staged in Cape Town by popular demand. See Independent Armchair Theatre in 'Concerts' below. -------------------- JUDITH AND OLIVER REIGN AT KORA AWARDS SA vocalist Judith Sephuma sensationally scooped both the 'Best Artist in Southern Africa' and 'Best African Female Artist' awards at the 2002 KORA All Africa Music Awards held in Johannesburg recently. Sephuma added the Kora awards to her impressive collection, which now includes two SA Music Awards ('Best Female Artist' and 'Best Jazz Vocal Album') received earlier this year for her debut BMG album 'A Cry, A Smile, A Dance'. Zimbabwean Oliver "Tuku" Mtukudzi won the award for 'Best African Arrangement' for his album 'Vhunze Moto' on the Sheer Sound label. The prolific Mtukudzi was also nominated in the 'Best Southern African Artist' category. Judith Sephuma's sister-BMG stars, Alicia Keys and Angie Stone, were also KORA 2002 winners, taking home the awards for 'Diaspora African American Artist' and 'Best Video' ('Brotha') respectively. The KORA's are the only pan-African music awards, and the spectacular show is broadcast to an audience estimated to be over 500 million across the entire African continent and into Europe. --------------------- PAUL BOTHNER Paul Bothner (91), the founder and guiding light of the chain of musical instrument retail stores in Cape Town that bear his name, passed away in Cape Town last week. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- SA ROCK DIGEST TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.samp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. Other guest slots include Albert Frost's guitar playing on 'I Howl' and 'I Choose', and Nick Le Roux, from Cape Town funksters Golliwog, playing soprano sax on 'When It Rains' and tenor sax on 'Lowlife'. Graeme Currie also brought his double bass along for 'Can't Blame Me' and 'Content And Real', with Cammy Schlebusch playing electric guitar on the same two songs. 'Killing Time' will be launched at Up The Creek in Pretoria on 22 November. Tickets will sell at R25-00 and R20-00 if you present a valid student card. Wild, lewd and downright dangerous in parts this album grabs you by the balls (other parts if you're a girl) and just doesn't let up. Jo Day's awesome sometimes angelic, occasionally demonic vocals are backed by some terrific tunes that take the listener on a journey fuelled with desire, angst, rage and overall hope... And I tell you what, it's a lot of spirit-lifting, body thrilling, and powerful rock. I defy anyone to say these faves are not as rock-worthy as any rock this side of anywhere. This is rock as fine as fine can be. I preach to the unsaved as well as the choir, the uncommitted and the committed, and everyone who listens enjoys. These are tunes gathered like rock flowers from 'Sound Offerings', sundry 5FM CDs, 'Ocean Culture', 'C Weed', 'The Best of SA Pop Volume 2, CD 2', 'Disco Fever', 'Rocking Against the System, 'A Naartjie in Our Sosatie', 'Oppikoppi Live', and others. From 150 or so favorites I've even distilled a hard-rocking set of the Best of the Best. I've got big noise rock like Seether and Squeal, a sax honker from The Dynamics, 'Wild Warrior' by the wild Arapaho, Falling Mirror's super fantastic 'Johnny Calls the Chemist', a hippie pirate song in 'The Buccaneer' by McCully Workshop, and the cool 'Competition Rules' by No Friends of Harry. But wait, there's more. I've also been grooving to (yes, grooving) to groups like EllaMental, Henry Ate, Wonderboom, Sugardrive, The Helicopters, The Asylum Kids, Radio Rats, The Electric Petals, Dog Detachment, Battery 9, Springbok Nude Girls, and many more. I'm a lucky guy, thanks for letting me hang out at your party. Goddank vir klank! Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com _________________________________ 5.LONDON LEKKER ---------------- London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music 'TIEN JAAR LATER' - JOHANNES KERKORREL The Church Organ has fallen silent and the congregation sits silently in the pews each one coping with the shock to the senses as the silence expands into the space that had once been filled with music. The more powerful the organ piece, the greater is the shock and adjustment required. Ralph Rabie certainly gave us some powerful music. Under the name of Johannes Kerkorrel, he came to prominence alongside Koos Kombuis and James Phillips with the Voëlvry tour, a tour that broke the shackles that had been keeping Afrikaans music clear of the rock scene and challenged the apartheid government. Three songs from Kerkorrel's seminal debut 'Eet Kreef' can be found here as well as two live tracks from the tour which later appeared on the CD 'Voëlvry Die Toer'. 'Sit Dit Af' is a decidedly anti PW (Botha) song as is the live 'Wat 'n Vriend Het Ons In PW'. The former in particular highlighted not only JK's lyrical ability but also his wonderful keyboard playing. Alongside this is the wonderful 'BMW' which attacks the upper class attitude with possibly the most sardonic vocals ever committed to CD. But it is his paean to Jo'burg's one time jol centre that outshines almost all else on the CD. 'Hillbrow' is an incredibly moving and descriptive piece that anyone who ever spent any time in the shadow of the Hillbrow Tower in the 80's will immediately relate to. Its haunting sound compliments perfectly the words that will invoke many a memory (both good and bad) as all the important landmarks are name checked. After Voëlvry, Kerkorrel seemed to move in a different direction to his fellow Voëlvryers. His music became gentler and less political. The beautiful 'Halala Afrika' and the melancholic 'Somer' show a very different side to his song writing. These two songs in particular massage a weary spirit while his version of Koos Kombuis' 'Onder In My Whiskeyglas' on the other hand is packed with the pains of life. These examples alongside his version of the traditional 'Al Lê Die Berge Nog So Blou' show that he was a very talented songwriter and musician. 'Tien Jaar Later' gives a good insight into the varied career of Kerkorrel. From the Rock 'n Roll of 'Sit Dit Af' through to the dance remix of 'River of Love' this retrospective CD covers all the facets of the man. As the congregation files silently out of the Church, the question 'Why?' hangs heavily in the air. It's unlikely that we will be able to answer this, so let's listen to this CD and not look for answers here, but rather celebrate the Church Organ in full flow. And while the tears flow perhaps for a while you can Gee gee gee, gee gee gee, gee jou hart vir Kerkorrel, sy familie, sy vriende en al sy fans. R.I.P. Ralph, stuur groete aan James. Even though it was released in 2000, 'Skankers Union' has earned its place on the lists of the most legend albums ever, and Fuzigish have risen to become one of the best (and best-known) punk/ska bands in SA. Some even say they can match, and even beat, bands like Less Than Jake and The Mad Caddies. 'Skankers Union' was released on Croakroom Records and recorded at B-Sharp studios, so it has that excellent sound quality that B-Sharp has become renowned for. Examples on the CD are songs like 'High And Mighty', which is very ire and chilling, and the very up beat 'How Rude' and 'Secret Police'. There are also very melodic songs like 'Little Bird', and a noticeable African flavour is added in 'Skankers Union'. To top it all off there is the hidden track 'Bridges', which will have you up and skanking as soon as you hear it. So as soon as you have finished reading this week's Digest get going and get yourself a copy of this timeless album. GREEN ONIONS (FRIED OR CHILLED) part 2 of 4 The musicians adopted the name Booker T and the MGs (stood for "Memphis Group"). Once, while waiting to record a jingle, the group started jamming a slow blues that developed into an up-tempo jam. Cropper applied it to wax as a B-side entitled 'Behave Yourself', while the A-side, 'Green Onions', carried a completely different edge. The B-side was just too good to waste so they swapped the names around and 'Green Onions' became officially fried. The first authentic recording of 'Behave Yourself'/ 'Green Onions' was applied to reel to reel in May 1962 and released in September that year on the Stax label. The group's eponomously-titled debut album in November 1962, opened up with the 'Green Onions' riff which also spawned the brotherly 'Mo' Onions' from the same album. Bassist Lewis Steinberg was replaced by the ever capable Donald 'Duck' Dunn in 1963. Continued next week... In fact with Sharon Tandy & Billy Forrest lurking at number 6 with 'Hello-A' it meant that 5 of the top 6 were local. Barbara Ray & Lance James were replaced in the top 5 in 1977 by another local act Margaret Singana. Lady Africa as she was known hit the charts with 'I Never Loved a Man (The Way I love You)' which was not a cover of the Aretha Franklin hit. Also climbing into the top 5 was Meco with his version of the theme from the soon to become massive series of movies 'Star Wars'. 1982 also saw a local act in the top 5 with country singer Joanna Field sneaking into position 5. As in 1972 Billy Forrest was lurking outside the top 5 this time with 'She Can't Say That Anymore' at number 6. Trio clung to the top spot despite a strong challenge from Dexy's Midnight Runers. The 1987 top 5 saw positions 2 and 3 swap places. Pseudo Echo had fared better with 'Funky Town' than the original version by Lipps Inc. The latter only made it to number 5. Trippy, eclectic and quite challenging, this collection of artists on the African Dope label is at the cutting edge of chilled electronica dance music. The main protagonists on the album are the Moodphase 5ive who have 5ive tracks here, all culled from the SA Rock Digest number 1 album 'Steady On.' Aside from this the Moodsters leading lady Ernie (Lady Ernestine) features on the sublime Tricky-esque 'Praha Paradise'. Intriguing and demanding tracks from the Kalahari Surfers 'Akasic Record' also feature alongside the delightful studio noodlings of the King Noodler Felix Laband. An album for chilling, full of exciting and inventive sounds. This one's for the adventurous. And don't forget to hang on for the hidden track by Ronnie Zonked, it's worth it. Smokin!!! The band has just released a new three-track demo and has launched their new website at www.planetstarseed.com Thanks Andrew ---------------- LAVISH PRAISE INDEED Hi, I refer to issue #177, and in particular to the write up about Curious George. Have you heard about a band called Lavish, who are also from East London and play live in the Port Elizabeth/Grahamstown/East London area? Lavish are a four-piece grunge-rock band consisting of Brett Lotz (vocals, guitar), Glen Adcock (guitar), Jason Hein (drums), and Phil Wilkinson (bass). They are really into their original music and have made a demo CD of six of their own songs. When they do play covers, it's the likes of Seether and Nirvana through to Staind and Blink 182. Do yourselves a favour and go check them out. Brett, the singer, looks like a scrawny weed, but when you hear him sing, you will be blown away. It was an evening of original rock and blues as well as some superbly-crafted love songs, all with Afrikaans lyrics. Dale Collins from the Boulevard Blues Band guested on a long blues work-out and Jesse Jordan came on stage to play guitar and sing back-up on the closing number 'Binneland In'. Gian then left the stage and Jesse closed the show with a couple of tracks off his new, unreleased CD 'Flipside'. Spinnekop consists of Alex Power on bass and keyboards, Jeremy Schultz on drums, Guy 'Gys Hoendervleis' Veldman on guitar and Gian plays guitar and mouth organ and sings all his own songs. Laurika Rauch recently covered the haunting 'Vier Seisone Kind' (off Spinnekop's 'Soet September' EP from 2000) and made it the title track of her new CD. Spinnekop rocked hard on songs like 'Binneland In', 'Tiger and Louise' '0-100' and 'Kwaad', and also played ballads such as 'Alles Sal OK Wees' and 'Winde Van Drome'. We even had some fast-paced rapping on the intro to 'Duskant Mitchell's Plain'. Gian Groen is a highly talented performer and songwriter. We are going to be watching him very closely. Friday night saw the Guild Theatre rocking on its foundations when the band Humble Man put in one of its rare public appearances. Involving guest artists on various instruments and a full quiver of British, Delta and Chicago blues styles, it was an ambitious undertaking, which succeeded beyond expectations. Expert sound mixing by seasoned musician and soundman, Les van der Veen, combined with the well-known acoustic quality of the Guild Theatre and excellent light and smoke effects, helped pave the way for a memorable performance. The programme started with Waldo Malan tinkling away on the Guild's magnificent Steinway Grand piano while a dramatic smoke and light show developed out of the darkness. Waldo's solo started to take form, and the musicians filed onto the stage, picking up their instruments en route. Soon the place was pumping as they launched into their theme song, 'Humble Man Shuffle'. From then on it was non-stop entertainment to the end, with a cleverly blended repertoire of slow and fast numbers. Guitar and harmonica, or "harp" in blues parlance, featured in the old blues standard, 'Boom Boom'. There were some songs from their successful CD, 'One True Friend', and then Drummer Tich Wild took the vocals on Tony Joe White's 'Tunica Motel'. For the finale, the band did their own composition, 'Jesus Lovin'' a song which has received airplay on local and overseas Christian radio stations. This one always gets the audience excited and baying for more. As an encore the band played a Larry Howard composition, 'Nobody But You', demonstrating the undeniable virtuosity of the musicians on stage. The brass section was in top form, the bass was as fat as could be, and Larry would have been proud to hear this superb rendition of his song. The audience still wouldn't go home, and the band played another encore, the great blues standard, 'Sweet Home Chicago', before taking a final bow. ----------------- RECOMMENDED GIGS ----------------- THE VARIETY SHOW The Labia - 8PM - Sunday 24 November The first in a fortnightly series, The Variety Show will feature the Goema Captains, recently returned from Hong Kong, playing their own variety of Goema music, so popular in District Six, and during the Coon Carnivals of yesteryear.
