The album is a mixture of acoustic, folk, pop and rock versions of both classic Christmas songs, and some more recent and unusual like Tweak doing Wham's 'Last Christmas', Toxic Shame handling John Lennon and Yoko Ono's 'Happy Xmas - War Is Over', Sugardrive's (hello there! you back?) version of 'Shoplifters Of The World Unite' by The Smiths' (huh?), and 'Psycho Xmas' by the Psycho Reptiles. '5FM presents The Santa Sessions' will be available in mid-November and is released through Sovereign Entertainment and Sting Music. Tracklisting: Henry Ate ('Winter Wonderland'), Just Jinger ('Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas'), Mean Mr Mustard ('When A Child Is Born'), Tweak ('Last Christmas'), Jimmy 12" ('Santa Claus Is Coming To Town'), Sugardrive ('Shoplifters Of The World Unite'), Wess-Lee ('Blue Christmas'), Toxic Shame ('Happy Xmas - War Is Over'), Zen Arcade ('Rudolf The Red Nose Reindeer'), Kreesan ('Away In The Manger'), Jo Day ('Do You Hear What I Hear'), Perez ('The Twelve Days Of Christmas'), Danny and Martin (from Wonderboom) ('Little Drummer Boy'), Q Zoo ('O Holy Night'), Psycho Reptiles ('Psycho Xmas'), Marlowe ('Silent Night') & Kelvin Declined ('Auld Lang Syne'). The tour will consist of four shows, two in Pretoria and two in Johannesburg at the end of November 2002. Moses Khumalo and Albert Frost will support him at all four shows. Harry (Cuby) Muskee was born on the 10th of June 1941 in a Dutch town called Assen. The most famous blues band in the history of Dutch music was formed in 1964 when Cuby joined up with some friends who got tired of the cover band they played for until then. Their recording career started in '65 with the recording of 'Just For Fun'. Since then all their singles made the Top 20 in Holland. In '67 they won the Edison award, the Dutch equivalent of a Grammy. In the late '60's and early '70's, Cuby And The Blizzards was one of the most requested bands on the European festival circuit where they played alongside some of the hottest acts of the time including The Fugs, The Nice, John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac, The Mothers of Invention, The Spencer Davis Group, The Small Faces, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Jethro Tull, and others. In a career spanning over almost four decades Cuby never lost sight of his roots, he has played the blues to thousands of people and recorded and sold many albums. And now, as this living legend continues to make history, he will be adding Africans to the long list of people for whom he has sung the blues. Special Edition are Richard Black (guitar and bass), Rupert Mellor (vocals and harmonica), Peter Hunt (keyboards), and Glen de Freitas (drums). The song was written by Richard Black and made its brief radio debut on KFM last year. Rockey Street, and the characters that populated it at the time (late 70s to mid-80s), are name-checked on this track which was recorded in 1996 by The Glee Club, an off-shoot of The Radio Rats. Ramsay MacKay (Freedoms Children), Patric van Blerk, Cheryl van Blerk (Radio Rats manager), Linda Dawson (The Insisters), Ronnie Robot (Rabbitt) and many others all get a mention on this song. http://www.samp3.com ----- CDs ----- BIG BROTHER II AND FERDIE TOO Is it my imagination, or have the recent batch of Big Brother housemates disappeared a little too quickly off our media radar? I saw Mandy on a TV ad the other day, and no sign of Ilse-Marie in the latest Loslyf (so we're told), but otherwise all we have with which to remember those great times in the jacuzzi is this second collection of songs featured (meaning played occasionally but strategically) in the BB house. So, among the 21 songs available here is the BBII theme called 'Cabin Fever' sung by those Pop Idols, Mel and Ezra. There is also Nickleback's 'How You Remind Me' {so, are having fun yet? -ed}, 'Adrienne' by the Calling instead of the very popular 'Wherever You Go' (which was an emotional House favourite), the Pink-ish new Semisane single called 'Girlfriend (Of Mine)'and other tracks from Westlife, Pink, Right Said Fred, Nianell, Heinz, and Natalie Inbruglia. As with last time, the Rodriguez song 'Sugar Man' was a usual housemates' sing-a-long favourite. However, here that classic, slow, trippy drug song gets thrown screaming into a by-the-numbers pounding disco mix. And the proud perpetrators of this cynical act preferred to remain anonymous on the sleeve notes, you chickens! And while we're on the subject, the esteemed millionaire winner of the first Big Brother series has just added a music CD to his list of post-House successes. Now a celebrity of TV talk and travel shows, Ferdie has recorded and released 'Wakka Wakka Ek Sê', his debut 14-track album on the EMI label. The album was recorded at Street Level Studios in Cape Town and the songs were fortunately mostly written by Al Etto, with minor contributions from Ferdie himself ('Babalas Blues'). Besides the title track, there's also 'Jy Maak My 'n Jas', 'Gatvol', and of course, 'Boesman Lambada'. I'm sure that all those Big Brother fans, Al Etto fans, and Ferdie fans will adore this. But for all those who were not happy back then that this ou got paid a lot of money after depositing a smelly package in the full media glare, you'll be disappointed to hear he's done it again! Buy 'Big Brother' CDs at: http://www.kalahari.net/e-trader/referral.asp?linkid=25&partnerid=1101 --------------------- DUNCAN FAURE - 'TAKE THE GOOD' We all remember Duncan Faure from his Rabbitt glory days in the '70's, the band's cutesy blonde keyboard player and songwriter. Following that band's demise, Faure joined the Bay City Rollers and then had a reasonable solo career, releasing a few albums, and touring with a variety of musical combinations. He later settled back in Pretoria with his family, and works out of his own home studio. Now this accomplished musician-songwriter is back with a new collection of 14 self-penned pop rock songs on his new album, 'Take the Good' (EMI/Capitol). On the album, Faure performs tunes ranging from confident rockers to vivid love songs, all featuring his expressive tenor voice, and an army of guitars and keyboards (nearly all played by himself). Higlights include 'Turn Me Back On Your Radio', 'Take the Good', and 'Not Enough Hours'. The new, as yet untitled, album should be out in February 2003. Five of the nine songs are nice covers dominated by keyboards, yet I wonder, with twenty singles and four other albums, why is over half this CD cover songs? This must reflect the live show of the trio that is now Ballyhoo. Nothing wrong with performing other people's material, nothing at all. Perhaps I am spoiled by the quality and quantity of original music I hear from South Africa, and one of the strongest movers on this CD is the apparently original 'No Good Advice' by F. & A. Ferguson -- Fergie Ferguson of Ballyhoo? The cover of Neil Diamond's 'Sweet Caroline' is pretty, and there's a lovely version of 'Brown-Eyed Girl'. The 'Do You Feel My Love' section of the 'Reggae Medley' gets into some nice fuzz that approaches the beginning of a start of an almost raw rock sound. These musos are accomplished pros, a fun party band with devoted fans in the Jo'burg area. They can still hit the young man notes with clean, clear singing and play melodies to make the listener sway, but in the end, the overall impression is that the album doesn't weigh much. Still, Ballyhoo would be a fun band for a wedding reception, private party, or to dance to in a club. Both versions of 'Man On the Moon' are sweet singles with smart lyrics. 'Man On The Moon 2001' is a nice version on its own, recorded with added busy modern sensibilities and instrumentation. If y'all have fun at a Ballyhoo gig, go ahead and pick up a copy from the person selling 'em at the show. Just don't expect Jack Hammer. He was part of the superb Baxtop in the late seventies. He was also part of the driving force that was Ella Mental in the eighties. In the nineties, he released this solo album and even in the naughties, he joined Just Jinger on stage at the 5FM birthday bash, thus showing he is still a musical force to be reckoned with. One could possible call him the grand Parr of South African rock. 'Still Standing' is, as one would expect from Parr, a quality album. It's the more serious rockers ('Back Room' and 'Seeds') that open the album. It sets a somewhat moribund tone, but this is soon dispersed as there is an upbeat feel to the some of the songs after that. This is especially so with the lilting eco-friendly 'What can be Done' with its reggae vibe, while the township jive rhythm of 'Sangoma' could power any taxi along the streets of Mamelodi. The anthemic chant of 'Freedom!' in 'Love Will Find a Way', the unadulterated optimism and the sheer feel good factor of the music should cheer up even the dourest of Jewish princesses in the northern suburbs (it's important to remember that even Kugels get the blues). Lyrically, Parr concentrates on the issues facing the new South Africa. The album was released in 1996, 2 years after the historic elections, and is certainly influenced by this time of change. In 'What can be Done' he asks 'What about the Rainbow?' only adding the word "nation" in the last verse. The song is a plea for reconciliation using images of nature to good effect. Having been around for so long, 'Still Standing' is an apt title for this fine work by one of South Africa's finest. Made up of 4 Parr-ts rock and 1 Parr-t township, this will appeal to lovers of African tinged rock. And, if you think my puns are bad, take a moment to consider that this was released on Tim Can records before you Parr-ss judgement on me. --------------- LIVE IN LONDON http://www.sarockdigest.com/london SA artists performing in London THE BATS Please note that the gig at the Springbok Bar seems to have been cancelled. There is something we need to address in SA punk, especially after hearing that New World Inside and My Latest Ex were the targets of glass bottles at this year's Woodstock! Think about this... 1) If a band such as Rancid, Anti Flag or NOFX wrote a song where they make reference to being in love, or having been in love, the "die hard" punk rockers would either scream "sell-out" or decide it was OK for them to sing the song, because they obviously really mean what they are singing or have an excuse because they hardly ever sing these songs. 2) If a band like New Found Glory, Less Than Jake or The Ataris wrote an all-out angry punk rock anthem these same punks would either scream "posers" or be outraged by these "commercial pop" bands trying to be punks. 3) The "pop" punks, or posers as they are most usually called, also play a part in this pathetic hate circle, and refer to bands like NOFX and Rancid as "krusty punk" or "too punk". 4) The "pop" punks and the "punk" punks don't associate at shows, don't really talk to each other unless totally necessary and are usually quite spiteful towards each other, be it in the pit, on stage or just in an every day situation. 5) The actual simple four chord wonder style played by the pop punk bands is closer to the old school punk style than this super fast technical hardcore punk style. So when I hear the "hardcore" punks ripping off the style the pop punks play, I can't help but laugh, and when I hear the "pop" punks ripping off the style the hardcore punks play, I laugh because it's just music, not life or death. In my opinion, this has got to stop. There are a few of us who want to stay straight down the middle, not just by wearing a spiky belt with our tight "sissy emo" T-shirts or a Blink 182 badge on our studded jackets. I mean, we don't want to fight this stupid little war! I personally listen to a wide variety of punk, ska and emo(*), everything from Dead Kennedys to Blink 182, Against All Authority to Less Than Jake, AFI to New Found Glory and NOFX to The Offspring. I like pop punk because its easy to listen to, and the harmonies and vocals are rad to listen to. I like hardcore punk because I like the rough raw emotion and feeling they put into what they do. I'm not a pop punk or a hardcore punk, I'm a punk, and nothing else. There is too much conflict between all the Punks in SA, if we want the scene to grow we have to learn to live together and have some respect for each other. In the words of Operation Ivy, "Stop This War"!!. If you don't like someone, make sure it's because of who they are, not because of what they listen to, for sanity's sake! * Emo-punk is "emotional punk" -------------- NEW RELEASES -------------- NEW WORLD INSIDE - 'DREAM HOPE FEAR' (Revolution) I was quite amped to listen to this first full-length release from New World Inside, the melodic emo/punk band from Da Mutha City. Having heard NWI's first demo/EP recording (which I thought was very good), I was immediately impressed on first listen with 'dream hope fear''s far better sound and recording quality. The album was recorded at B-sharp Studios in Johannesburg, and all 11 tracks are superbly mixed. 'dream hope fear' has a great range of songs from the strongly emo 'Song In A' (featured recently on Revolution's 'Family Business' compilation) to the recharged 'Since I Met You', which is even faster-paced and more energetic, clearly showing influences from bands like New Found Glory. But my favourite song by far is 'Rock City', which is a very fast and frenetic song about Bellville (where most of the band's members grew up) and how fun it is to hang out there with their buddys from the band 22 Stars. 'dream hope fear' is a mandatory CD to add to your SA Punk collection. 8/10 Read http://www.cd.co.za/legends/2000plus/new_world_inside_index.html Listen http://www.samp3.com/artists_l_s.html ----------- GIG GUIDE ----------- DURBAN - Sat 23 Nov - Burn (R15, 9pm) * The Finkelsteins * Aleda BOKSBURG/BENONI - Sat 23 Nov - Trotters (R20, 8pm) * LEEK A T B U * Humphrey the Teacup * Ill Audio * + more This is gonna be a live recording so come make a noise Daniel mailto:daniel@sarockdigest.com?subject=gigs _________________________________________ 7.HISTORY & TRIVIA ------------------- ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ---------------- Our rock historian with an eye for the obscure, the conspiracies, and the real facts. GREEN ONIONS (FRIED OR CHILLED) part 1 of 4 At one stage it was called the second anthem of South Africa thanks to the above the line media in South Africa embracing the groove-hooking 'Green Onions' with a passion. This tune is so infectious that even our teenagers can recognise its foot shuffling rhythm from its pounding out of numerous jingles over the past twenty years. The 'Green Onions' groove has maintained an epic accountability filtering into a variety of styles over the last thirty years. Our story starts in 1961 with a group called the Royal Spades. That band later evolved into the Mar-Keys and backed up rockabilly/blues singer Billy Lee Riley. The Mar-Keys made their debut with a single called 'Last Night' (1961) which propelled the emerging Stax label into prominence. The Stax in- house musicians on hand then were Hammond B3 player Booker T Jones, bassist Lewis Steinberg, drummer L. Jackson (ex-Roy Milton band), and guitarist Steve Cropper. Continued next week... Dr Hook made a surprising recovery after having dropped down to number 5, it sprung back to number 2. The South African content of the top 5 was restored to 3 as Denise Freeman jumped up from number 8. Denise was British born, and after spending some time in SA she returned to England, however this is counted as a South African hit as the song was recorded while she was a South African resident. 1977 was the only one of the years above that saw a change at the top this week. Joe Dolan was only in his 4th week on the top 20, and had captured the top spot. Brotherhood of Man had only been at number 1 for 2 weeks. Heart's 'Barracuda' had shot up the charts, in at number 17, then 6 and now 3. Dexy's Midnight Runners finally broke the stranglehold at the top in 1982. For the previous 5 weeks, the contents of the top 5 had consisted of the same songs in differing order. Duran Duran's 'Hungry Like the Wolf ' made way for 'Come on Eileen' which was a world wide smash, topping both the US and UK charts. Since the heady white trousered days of the 70's the Bee Gees had been surprisingly low key. 'You Win Again' was their 12th hit on the charts, all 12 of which had made top 10. The gap of about eight and a half years since Tragedy was in the charts was tied 18th for the biggest gap ever. They tied with Crocodile Harris who also had a gap of 3067 days between 'Miss Eva Goodnight' and 'Give Me The Good News'. It collects together studio tracks from artists involved in the highly influential and groundbreaking nation-wide tour (in 1989) as well as tracks by like-minded artists who weren't actually on the tour. This album is now perfectly complimented by the fantastic collection of tracks recorded live on the tour. The live album only features Die Gereformeerde Blues Band (under the leadership of Johannes Kerkorrel), André le Toit (more commonly known as Koos Kombuis) and Bernoldus Niemand (the sadly departed James Phillips). These 2 albums were the soundtrack to the crumbling of verkrampte attitudes towards rock music and are not only essential for any interested in the roots of Afrikaans Rock, but are essential for anyone serious about South African rock. I'm looking for old punk bands, especially formed in the years 1976-82, for e.g. Asylum Kids, Wild Youth. Do you know where can I buy this stuff? Maybe someone can record them for me on mp3/CDR or may want to trade Africa reissues for Polish punk reissue?! Thanks! Cheers Paul mailto:czarnobylski_homik@wp.pl --------------------- MIDI FILES I'm a muso ex-PE, Grahamstown and Cape Town. Currently in Melbourne Australia. Currently I'm performing solo and have had to succumb to performing with sequenced backing - actually it not that bad - it's fun doing your own arranging, but there's nothing like playing with other musos. I'm DESPERATE to find midifiles of SA songs, as there seem to be none on the international search engines like musicrobot and vanbasco. I'm new to the sequencing lark and sequencing a song from the ground up is not wholly within my current capability, and anyway it's so much quicker to edit an existing file, even if it's from a pay site. At this point I am looking for a midifile of 'Weeping', one of my all-time SA favourites, and, believe it or not, I'm also looking for 'Love Is A Beautiful Song' (Dave Mills-70's). I actually won the Herald "On The Go" talent contest at age 21 singing that one, along with 'Cry To Me' by the Staccatos. Are there any SA midifile sites? If there aren't, someone is ignoring a huge opportunity to run a successful site. I'd be very grateful if you can help. Contrary to expectations they certainly don't look, act or sound like relics from the 60's, even less so when they bounce onto the stage and launch into an energetic 'All I Got'. It is instantly apparent that they still "have it". Marvellous harmonies and musical virtuosity abounds throughout the performance. There is instant rapport with the audience who alternate between hushed silence and tears of laughter. Rotund Eddie Eksteen, drummer, vocalist and comedian extraordinaire, need only mince across the stage, groan piteously or shake his hips and flip his collar Elvis Presley-style to have the audience in stitches. Their exceptional musical talent shines through all the stage buffoonery. Paul Ditchfield eases from guitar to bass to keyboard while Eddie leaps off the podium and into a comedy routine, to be smoothly replaced on drums by Derek Gordon, who has just relinquished the bass or keyboards to Paul. Pete Clifford, guitarist of note, launches into a sizzling solo during J.J. Cale's 'Cocaine', accompanied by some show-off slapping and popping bass from Derek. Pete also demonstrates the "voice box", a device made famous by a namesake of his, Peter Frampton. Pete was already playing professionally at 15, and went on to back top artists like Dusty Springfield, Gene Pitney and Tom Jones. Suddenly he grabs his tenor banjo and the group launches into a barbershop quartet type number bemoaning their lack of fortune at Lotto. Changing direction, Derek, as a dedication to ex-Dealian Len Cooper, does a powerful rendition of 'Unchained Melody', hitting the high notes perfectly despite a touch of flu. After interval we are treated to one of their greats, 'A Shabby Little Hut', with some nice Spanish trumpet played on keyboard by Paul. In a beautiful tribute to Madiba, we hear some haunting guitar by Pete and harmonies by the others. Years ago Paul wrote a song dedicated to his four-year-old daughter, and tonight he treats the audience to a dazzling keyboard display with his composition 'Three to Tangle', written for his triplet grand daughters. This is basically a tango which has its dramatic, classical and frenzied fusion moments. Eddie pretends absolute amazement: "Did you see that? His fingers never once left his hands!" Their love for sport comes through in many of their songs. There is a little Caribbean thing about a Springbok cricketer and the effects of a certain "herb". Then the audience is reminded of one of their most famous songs, 'Vat Hom Dawie', before being cajoled into singing along in some other cricket songs. 'Sound of Sirens' is a satire which, though funny, reflects uncomfortably and accurately upon the high rate of crime in the country. The highlight for many would be the brilliant renditions of Shadows numbers, complete with unison movements. All in all, a show not to be missed, and judging from the wide range of ages at the first performance, not strictly for the old fogeys.
