First off is US R&B star Usher who will be opening the SA section of his current world tour at the Bellville Velodrome in Cape Town on Nov 20, before moving on to Johannesburg and Durban. Danny K will be Usher's support act for these SA concerts. Then P Diddy will join multi-Grammy Award winner, Alicia Keys, at the MTV HIV/AIDS Awareness 'Staying Alive' concert at Green Point Stadium in Cape Town on November 23. This concert is twinned with the first 'Staying Alive' concert, which will be taking place earlier in the month in Seattle on Nov 7. A selection of top SA acts is expected to be included on the Cape Town bill. Footage from both the 'Staying Alive' concerts will be screened as a special on MTV on World AIDS Day on December 1. -------------------- 'GIANT STEPS' AT SPIER BMG Records Africa have announced the inaugural 'Giant Steps African Music Festival' to take place in January/February 2003 at the open-air amphitheatre at Spier Estate in Stellenbosch, featuring a star-studded line-up of top South African recording artists. Acts appearing include the globe-trotting Soweto String Quartet, Mamelodi's renowned troubadour Vusi Mahlasela, singing sensation Judith Sephuma, the multi-talented Selaelo Selota, Afro folk star Umanji, and Afro jazz newcomer Sasha Sonnbichler. For four nights running (Thurs 23 - Sun 26 Jan), the Soweto String Quartet will enchant the Spier crowds with their Afro/classic fusion sound. Thur 30 Jan will see Afro jazz vocalist Judith Sephuma take to the Spier stage with her backing band. Selaelo Selota, who has emerged as one of the brightest Afro jazz music stars since the release of his 2000 debut album, 'Painted Faces', and his latest offering, 'Enchanted Gardens', will perform on Fri 31 Jan, supported by Umanji. Hailing from South Africa's most northern Limpopo province, troubadour Umanji is one of the freshest new musical talents around. His gold selling debut album 'Moloi/The Witch' has proved a major hit and his latest offering, 'Wantolobela', was released earlier this year and produced by Selaelo Selota. Vusi Mahlasela will be closing the festival on Sun 1 Feb. Since 1992 Mahlasela has released five superb solo albums, including the gold selling and double SAMA award-winning 'Silang Mabele'. His new self-produced album, 'Jungle Of Questions', was recorded alongside his Proud People's Band backing outfit, who will appear with "The Voice" at Spier. Opening this show will be exciting newcomer Sasha Sonnbichler. Hailing from a rock and classical background, Sasha is a young Johannesburg-based guitarist who is going to surprise a lot of people with his classy, Afro jazz-drenched debut album which was produced by Selaelo Selota. Until recently, the Vibes branch at N1 City sold both CDs and LPs, but that shop has now moved to a smaller CDs-only venue in the same mall. Alan Hilton, the owner of Vibes Music, has long recognised the increased demand for vinyl of all kind from both collectors young and old, as well as DJs looking for new sounds and samples. 'Vibes Vinyl' will be selling South African and international LPs, 7", and 12" singles from the '40's to '90's and all tastes and styles should be adequately catered for. Vibes Vinyl will also be looking for record collections to buy. Tel 021 6835676 mailto:ahilton@mweb.co.za -------------------- VIRGIN RECORDS SA SIGN OTHER 'POPSTARS' GROUP Virgin Records SA have announced the signing of Afro Z (pronounced "Afro Zee"), the new SA R&B/Pop sensations, featuring Richard Hala, Ernest St Clair, Nigel Morkel, Lois du Plessis & Naseera Timm. As with the UK's Liberty X, the members of Afro Z, were the runners-up in the recent Coca Cola Popstars competition on SABC3. The winning five are now known as 101 (the total of the members ages). The band's first single, 'Phenomenal', will be released on 11 November, followed by an album release early in the New Year. The direction that they're taking (as defined by themselves) is "Urban Pop" and will, as the term suggests, be a distinctly South African "urban" pop sound {Well, that explains that - ed.}. -------------------- 'WIRED UP VOL 2' LAUNCH PARTY AT THE ROXY RHYTHM BAR 'Wired Up Vol. 2', the second in a series of rock compilations featuring the very best in international rock singles, will be launched at the Roxy in Melville on Friday 29th November, with special guests Perez, and Jimmy 12". Barney Simon will be there to play all your favourite hits in between the bands and there will prizes and specials during the evening. Perez' new single, 'Mamma Mia', is the only SA contribution to the compilation, albeit an ABBA cover. The band has just completed a sold-out national tour. All three of the bands performing on the night are leaders in the rock gig circuit and are currently causing heat waves wherever they play. Marlowe and Jimmy 12" will also have returned from a national tour in which the two bands performed side by side all over the country. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- SA ROCK DIGEST TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.samp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ JAMIE JUPITER - 'Mama Yea' Ex-Honeymoon Suites bassist goes solo and gets even more funky. Watch out for his 6-track EP including his tribute to Jeffrey's Bay, 'The Blue'. MANN FRIDAY - 'The Orchard' Powerful title track from this fascinating album launched last Saturday night. Recorded over 52 days on an apple farm on the banks of the Theewaterskloof Dam and produced by Craig Ormond. AKKEDIS - 'Sweet Stellenganga' 'Die Leeu Slaap Vanaand' ('The Lion Sleeps Tonight') combined with Valiant Swart's song about scoring in Stellenbosch. Great sax solo by Swart Gabriel. Taken off last year's chart-topping 'Voortvlugtend' album on Rhythm Records. ROGER LUCEY - 'The Day Harry J Went To War' The story of a man who has just had enough, taken from Roger's stunning 'Gypsy Soul' CD. Great violin playing by Brendan Jury. SONS OF TROUT - 'Jeff' A second track off the wonderful chart-topping 'Odd Times' CD by Cape Town band Sons Of Trout. Listen to all these songs at http://www.samp3.com ----- CDs ----- SUNWAYS RELEASE 'THREE' What do you get when you combine the band who won this year's SAMA Award for 'Best Rock Album', with the producer who won the SAMA Award for 'Best Producer' at the same ceremony? You get a new album from Sunways, produced by Peter Pearlson, called 'Three'. Sunways will release 'Three' on October 28 and the album is being touted as their best work yet. It features five new tracks, and unplugged versions of three of the tracks from their SAMA award-winning album, 'The Moon Is A Spoon'. 'Three' also has a Multimedia Package featuring three music videos, one of them being footage from their recent live show in Belfast, Ireland. The release of the album also introduces Sherene Hustler, a new member in the band, who joins Sunways on drums. The band has picked up a lot of publicity after Robbie Boake took off all his clothes on stage at the 'Woodstock 2 Warm-Up' concert' at Carnival City in August. So the CD cover for 'Three' is a reminder of this "daring" move from the lead singer. If he had been involved, no doubt he would have called in some big names like Santana, Eminem, Dido, Andrew WK, and Britney's ex-boyfriend to collaborate on some tracks. But Carike decided to stay focused on the (very) young pop market that she has dominated for so long and has released 'In Kinderland 2', the eagerly-awaited follow-up to, um, 'In Kinderland Vol 1'. So, these 23 tracks include some newies as well as all your old favourites like 'Haasdaas Se Nuuskaas', 'Die Paddakonsert', 'Willie Wouter', and a new version of 'How Much Is That Doggie'. A Carike Sampler may be available soon at samp3.com. Buy http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&searchfor=carike -------------------- VARIOUS - 'FEAR FACTOR' A rough and tough collection of some of the songs featured on the soundtrack of the insane 'Fear Factor' reality show, currently churning the stomachs of many M-Net subscribers. Tracks by SA rock bands Seether ('Needles'), Tweak ('Birthday Card'), and Boksburg's own Siamese, who contribute 'Fear', the theme from the series, mingle confidently alongside international offerings from Trik Turner ('Friends And Family'), Death In Vegas ('Hands Around My Throat'), Faithless ('Tarantula'), and others from Rob Dougan, The Electric Soft Parade, Skinny, Kosheen, Busta Rhymes, and The Color Red. Fearsome! --------------- MORE REVIEWS --------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://www.cd.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________ 4.USA FOR AFRICA ------------------ Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music FALLING MIRROR - 'THE STORMING OF THE LOFT & ZEN BOULDERS (FRESHCD124) Given a choice between owning 'Shattered' or this twofer of the Falling Mirror albums 'Zen Boulders' and 'Storming the Loft', I'd have to still go for owning both CDs. In 'Zen Boulders and The Storming of the Loft' I'm listening to two albums and a total of twenty songs. Who are these Falling Mirror guys? Neilen Mirror, Allan Faull, Tully McCully, and Patrick Humphries. Faull and Mirror write the songs, Tully adds his special touch and comprehensive talent, and Patrick is on drums and percussion. The Falling Mirror collection 'Shattered', also put together by Benjy Mudie, has eleven songs from the albums on this new Retro Fresh re-release, but not 'Dreamer (We Shall Be Free)', 'Who's That Noisy Boy Who Never Says a Word', 'Boy and Girl... Alone On a Throne', 'I Wish I was a Purple Door', 'You Think You're So Great', and five others. The new-to-me Falling Mirror songs make this CD a must-have. That one of those songs is an alternate version of 'Making Out with Granny' just sweetens the mix, as do the detailed liner notes and masterful Retro Fresh remastering. Delicate musical moments, wild rock bursts, but Falling Mirror are always in control. The lyrics are beautifully fractured, the music stylish without being pretentious. Another plus on this double-album CD is that since Falling Mirror include at least one pure fun rock 'n' roll number per album, here we get two, 'Archie and Juggie Went Down to the Store' and 'Neutron Bop' "Chom-chom-a-rom-a-rom-chom-a-rom-chom!" I don't care for only one song on this CD, but that's because the topic is not pleasant, not because of any fault with the singing, playing, or lyrics. It's about a student who takes a gun to school because she doesn't like Mondays {Kurt is a school teacher - ed}. That it makes me feel uncomfortable attests to the success of the song's intent. {Was this before or after Bob Geldof covered the same theme, based on a true incident, I wonder - ed}. In sum, given a choice between 'Zen Boulders and the Storming of the Loft' and 'Shattered', I'd say, "Play either one first, then play the other one next. I feel like hearing both 'Grannys'." There will be those I guess that will be put off listening to this purely by the fact that it's classified as Christian music. After all it's said that the devil has the best tunes. However, listening to 'Still Learning' I think God's nicked a few for his own purposes. Lyrically though, these are not in your face 'Amen! Hallelujah! Have you been saved?' songs, but are more personal, clean cut songs about life with the occasional reference to God or Jesus. This means that they can be listened to by believers and non-believers alike where the former can read deeper meanings into the words while the latter can take them at face value. Musically, the album starts brightly with the 'long early morning walks on St Francis Bay Beach' inspired 'Misty Morning Sun' which is a bouncing sunny tune. It's followed by 'Bright Green Day' which contains some of the raunchiest guitar work on the album which opens the song and joins in for each chorus. The song borders on being grunge. Other bright and breezy pop rock tunes like 'Sensual Stare' and the wonderful reggae tinged title track make up the first part of an album that changes gear about halfway through. As a 'Bourbon Sky' comes out, the pace mellows and the feel becomes much more introspective. 'Vision' starts out with a similar guitar to Pink Floyd's 'Goodbye Blue Sky' while there is some quite beautiful guitar on 'She's Lovely' which is dedicated to Brad (vocals, harmonica) and Darren (vocals, guitar) Peens' mom. 'Still Learning' is a C-Rock album that can be enjoyed as a Christian album, or merely a great rock album. Obviously the band would like the listener to be influenced by the album, however they never force their message on the listener, it's there if you want to hear it. Being such a polished debut album, one may be forgiven for thinking that if these dudes are 'Still Learning' then what's to come must be pretty impressive, and believe me 'Into the Universe', the follow up album is better than this great album. If there is a CD heaven, 'Still Learning' is certainly good enough to make it through the pearly jewel cases. We were all very shocked to hear the news, and we cannot find the right words to explain the pain and loss we are feeling. Everyone in the SA punk community is still in shock and we all mourn his tragic death. Derrick will be missed among the band. He was our bro, and we will never forget him. Editor's Note: The popular Port Elizabeth musician also worked for Oakley Africa, and his company and the police have raised a joint reward of R200,000 for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the persons responsible. The Digest sends it deepest condolences to all Derrick van Niekerk's family, friends and fellow band members. RIM 3 TOUR - GIGS AND ROOMS WANTED Rim 3 are looking to be touring from the 9-17th December and are going from Pretoria to Durban to East London to Port Elizabeth and then to Cape Town. They are looking for help with regards to shows and accommodation (one night max at each city) so if there is anyone willing to help for a good cause please email the band at mailto:followclose@yahoo.com.thx. And keep the beat alive. ------------ GIG REPORT ------------ MCA EPISODE 1 Purple Turtle, Cape Town - 19 Oct The Purple Turtle was the venue for this first episode of the Mutha City Alliance shows. Almost 250 people had already passed through the doors before 8.00 so the place was packed when the guys from 350 climbed up on stage to play their short opening set. This was a great opportunity to get some recognition and publicity so they had to play well, and they did just that. The pit was wild and it has been a while since I have seen one that big at the Turtle. Hugh got up on stage during 'Destroying Christmas' and 'I Know Your Tricks' to play the second trumpet and it sounded so good that I'm looking forward to when he plays second trumpet in all 350's songs. Next were the guys from New World Inside, one of my favourite bands, who as usual rocked the house. If you haven't yet seen them play live then do yourself a favour and pull a mission to one of their shows - you won't regret it. After NWI, Aftertaste played a reasonable set but seemed a bit unamped and not as good as they were at 'New Song'. But the pit was still wild and one guy even managed to break his nose and spread blood across the floor. The infamous Hog Hoggidy Hog crew hadn't played in Cape Town for a while, so everybody was lank amped to hear them again and they just took control of the crowd. They played all their classics, like 'Peter Wino' and the 'Naked Song', and as usual everybody climbed on to the stage to sing John and Phillip's song for George. Then came the Rudimentals, probably my favourite band on the night. They brought it down a couple of notches and played some of the best reggae/ska around today. They have expanded and got a phat brass section and it works so beautifully with the rest of the band. All in all it was a rad show and I am so looking forward to Episode 2. The second single by Les Fleur De Lys, 'Circles' (1966), was originally released by the Who, and featured an elaborate guitar solo by Jimmy Page, producer of the group's debut single 'Moondreams'. But after listening to Jimmy Page for many years I am convinced that this is not the normal Page dexterity and can only be the vibrant guitar work of Phil Sawyer. On the B-side 'So Come On, the monkey wrench guitar solo is high energy and quite emphatically Sawyer's. The group also jammed with Jimi Hendrix at London's nightspot the Speakeasy. But the three recordings done with Hendrix were never released. The group's follow-up single, 'Mud In Your Eye', delivered some of the most grinding and throbbing guitar to soak their repertoire. The single also showcases a staggering guitar solo by Bryn Haworth. The group went on to act as a session band for singers like John Bromley, and the South African vocalist Sharon Tandy. At this stage two bands were co-existing under the same name. Pete Sears eventually crossed the waters and joined Jefferson Starship and Hot Tuna, while Gordon Haskell ended up singing and playing bass with King Crimson in 1970. Concluded week... 'I Need Someone' had spent 10 weeks in the top 5, dropping down to number 6 for 2 weeks and was now back for another run. Lower down the charts that year, 'Hello-A' by Billy Forrest & Sharon Tandy entered the top 20. Sharon (real name Sharon Finkelstein) was the first non American female to be signed to the famous Stax soul label in the US. She released a number of singles for Stax, backed by Booker T & the MG's. Brotherhood of Man took over the number 1 spot from Peter McCann in 1977. 'Angelo' had topped the UK charts, but failed to dent the US charts. Bubbley was a Dutch group who went under the name Champagne in their home country. 1982 saw no change in the top 5, in fact this was the 4th week running that these 5 songs had, in varying order, made up the top 5, and there was still another week of these 5 songs, but tune in next week to see what order they were in. 1987 also saw little change in the top 5 with 'Funky Town' and 'Let's Dance' swapping places. They are all available at One World and will also make great Christmas gifts. 'THE BEST OF SA POP VOLUME 2' This double CD set was my introduction to South African rock and pop, and remains a favorite, the King of the Comps, if you will. Both discs are crammed full of music, but the second disc digresses from the classic pop into rock territory with tunes like 'ZX Dan' by the Radio Rats, 'Buccaneer' by McCully Workshop, 'Weeping' by Bright Blue, and fifteen others. A pleasure to listen to, and a well-received gift that I've given folks. Once 'The Best of SA Pop Volume 2' is bought, I hope most everyone will turn completist and buy Volumes 1 and 3. Other SA classics include: 'For Your Precious Love' (The Flames), 'Master Jack' (Four Jacks and A Jill), 'Cry To Me' (The Staccatos), 'Substitute' (Clout), 'Shadows' (éVoid) and 'Charlie' (Rabbitt). I have not yet met anyone from my country who knows or have heard of Rodriguez. I first heard his song "Sugarman" 8 years ago... when I was backpacking in Thailand, in a tribe on the high mountains of Chiangrai. A village girl had received an old tape recorder and a few dubbed cassettes as gifts, which one of them contained the song, and she was playing it. I tried looking on the cassette cover for the name of the song and artist, but was not written. For 6 years, I kept humming the tune in my head, not knowing the title of the song nor who sang it. On my first day at work in Oct 2000, I heard someone humming the very familiar tune! I was at last able to find out about the song! That's how this person and I got to know each other very immediately. When this person told me the title and artist, I still could not find it anywhere in Singapore. Months later, he bought me the CD from the Internet. 'Cold Fact' was the first album he ever owned, so it really meant something to him. Now 2 years later, this man and I are happily married and we just had a 3-mth-old daughter. Mr Rodriguez, I just want to say THANK YOU VERY MUCH. The lyrics may be painful to the heart, but your music has brought much love to mankind. Lastly, PLEASE PLEASE let me know when and where if there's gonna be a concert. I will travel the world just to see Rodriguez perform. Curious night owl Don Bryce finds them at their favourite haunt, Buccaneers. The boy band phenomenon has taken the world by storm, and East London has its fair share. Only difference is, ours are not pallid or wimpish, and they rock much more. Curious George, who take their name from the naughty fictional monkey created by Hans and Margret Rey sixty years ago, are going places. Full of charm, musical intelligence and visual appeal, they have the acumen and drive to succeed in a competitive and exclusive market. Soft blue lighting, a Spiced Gold promo and Curious George in top form set the atmosphere for an agreeable evening at Buccaneers. But ugh, Castle Draught from a plastic tumbler, that's NASTY. You just taste the plastic. No plastic music here, thank goodness, no robotic sequencers or on-stage PC's, what you see is what you hear, and what you hear is good. Tim Kroon on vocals, Andrew Bryson on guitar, Cheyne Harris on bass and Greg Wild on drums make up the fearsome foursome. They are quite prolific song writers and already have a number of quality originals under their collective belt, but at gigs they adroitly keep the crowd's attention by blending in their stock of best-loved covers, playing creditable versions of Pearl Jam, Springbok Nude Girls, Counting Crows and Live tunes. Although Tim and Cheyne will be at varsity next year, they give the assurance that Curious George will rock on regardless. They say that they are planning a new sound project encompassing "atmospheric and industrial" sounds, and if you want to know what that means, listen to some Filter and Nine Inch Nails. Filter has been described as "energised, optimistic and inspired" and it's hard not to keep drawing parallels when talking to Curious George. Not that they are cloning or trying to clone anyone, but what harm is there in being motivated by a winning formula? "Filter has taken rock to a new level", says Tim, "We want to go further." Tim says their new sound will be "very electronic". "But definitely not rave or disco," adds Cheyne. They are still talking about the project they are embarking on in the New Year. "Although we will be using computer generation, this will complement rather than detract. Our music will be essentially live, with lots of detail," says Tim. Curious George has supported acts like Semisane and Henry Ate, but they rate their best gig so far as last year's 'Battle of the Bands' at Club Nine Thirty. Curious George cut a nine-track CD of original material last year, one track of which was selected by Radio Algoa during Sound Search 2001. They have also received a good mention in the SA Rock Digest and had a single, 'Trippin', featured on the samp3.com site (Went to #1 - Charts Editor). Future plans? Finish school, work on the sound project, play a huge New Year's Eve party, go to varsity and keep developing musically. Back to Bucs, and the guys take a short rest while the resident DJ goes mad. After a Disco set, which has everyone on the floor, it's make or break the party. Curious George is up to the midnight challenge and the crowd keeps dancing. Quality modern rock, well played, saves the day and takes us through to the next. (DB) Listen http://www.samp3.com/artists.html ------------------ SONS OF TROUT The Jam 12 October 2002 By Nadia Neophytou I arrived at The Jam (now known as Mercury Live) to see that onstage the band, only two songs into their set, were already all hot and sweaty, giving new meaning to their song 'Getting Hotter' for the show was definitely going to get hotter. Sons of Trout received a warm welcome home from their Cape Town fans, who have not seen them perform in quite some time. Playing fairly new songs off their most recent offering, 'Odd Times', and off old favourite albums like 'Ticks On George' and 'Take Me To Your Fishmonger', Sons of Trout delivered a passionate performance. It's amazing how just a few seconds of a song on an advert like the one currently showing on TV and playing on radio can make you feel as if you know a song in its entirety. As Mike sang the lyrics "lost in Amsterdam", it was clear that the feeling of belonging to the fans and friends of Cape Town and South Africa, made performing back in their hometown a magical occasion, leaving the band little reason to feel lost. Front man, Mike Hardy acknowledged that 'Odd Times' has been out for some time now but recent punting from national radio station, SAFM, has given it a much-appreciated extra push. Fans can expect to see the music video for 'Extra Larry' soon, as the band has promised. After 6 years of fan collecting, Sons of Trout enjoy a following of people as passionate about their music as the band is; who join arms to make-up-as-you-go-along dance routines and smile at each other in united enjoyment, and comprise all that epitomises a Sons of Trout gig. Welcome home, boys! * Apologies to Mann Friday for having missed their set and so I am unable to comment on it. Band leader Colin Clur talks to Don Bryce: Good news for those who missed last November's sell-out performance by Humble Man at the Guild Theatre, and even for those who didn't, is that Humble Man will be back at the Guild on Friday 8 Nov with a bigger, even better, sound. Since that immensely successful show, Humble Man has not been idle. Despite hectic work schedules, the guys have been hard at work writing new material and touring. They went down so well at the 'Joy of Jazz Festival' in Grahamstown, that Festival organiser Henry Shields immediately booked them to play five prestigious gigs - three at Cape Town's Green Dolphin and two at the Hermanus Whale Festival. They also played at East London's Portnet Harbour Festival, the Grahamstown Christian Arts Festival and more recently at Hudson Park's Regeneration Concert in aid of flood victims. In addition, they have appeared regularly at East London's upmarket Smoky Swallows Restaurant. Restless with the original 3-piece configuration consisting of Colin Clur on guitar and vocals, brother Greg on bass and Tich Wild on drums, Colin progressively increased the line-up by inviting guest musicians to join them on keyboards, harmonica and backing vocals. Latest addition is a brass section, which will be unleashed publicly for the first time at the Guild Theatre concert. This hugely enhanced sound, together with freshly penned material, promises a mouth-watering treat for discerning music lovers. Music of this calibre, particularly when homegrown and played in a venue offering the excellent acoustic quality of the Guild Theatre, is well worthy of support. Seating is limited and only one performance is scheduled, making early booking essential. Don't miss this one. ---------------------- INDEPENDENT ARMCHAIR THEATRE 28 October - 3 November Monday 28: Manga by W.A.V.E.
