It is with much sadness I pass on this message to you - we lost a true soldier of folk music today. Some of you will know that without Keith Blundell, we would not have had the privilege of enjoying and taking part in folk music, such as it was in South Africa during the 60s and later. Thank you Keith, we indeed celebrate your life. In apppreciation, Mel Green ------------------ THE JAM/206 IS NOW THE MERCURY Two of Cape Town's most popular live venues, The Jam and 206, now have new owners and new names. The side section of the Shack complex in De Villiers Street that houses these two upstairs and downstairs venues will now be known collectively as Mercury and will be run as a joint, linked single-door venue. The larger upstairs venue, previously known (loved and remembered) as The Jam will now be known as Mercury Live, and the cosier, downstairs 206 venue will now be called the Mercury Lounge. The new owners, and managers, of Mercury are Sean Wienand and Kevin Winder, who have both been actively involved in the venues for many years. Renovations to both venues are already underway with the Mercury Lounge being the first to get an overhaul during October, and Mercury Live to get its makeover in November. However, Sean Wienand has assured all those Jam devotees that the new décor will not be too far from the old clubs' edgy, industrial interior. So it's (live music) business as usual at the Mercury. -------------------- JUSTIN BERGH WOOS NEW YORK Cape Town singer songwriter, Justin Bergh, is back in the US for two high-profile New York showcase gigs, hoping to secure a major label record deal that will include the worldwide release of the follow-up to his 2000 hit debut album 'Love the Sinner'. The first showcase was on Oct 10 for a host of music industry movers and shakers at the Bitter End, the famous Greenwich Village club, on Bleeker Street. The second showcase, on October 16, is at Arlene's Grocery, the hip rock club downtown on the Lower East Side. Bergh recently performed a warm-up gig at the New Jersey club, Saint, in Jon Bon Jovi's hometown Redbank, a short distance from Asbury Park, the town where Bruce Springsteen launched his career. Bergh is being backed by a band of top New Jersey musicians assembled by US manager Dave Novik, the former senior vice president of A&R at RCA in New York who is now mentoring emerging talent at his own independent music company. Novik is best known for launching the US careers of N'Sync and Natalie Imbruglia. Bergh's New York showcases are a culmination of a creative process that gained serious momentum in mid-2001 when he travelled to the US on the invitation of RCA New York who were impressed by his support act for their multi-platinum rock band Collective Soul during their South African tour. Since then Bergh has returned to New York and LA twice to work on the upcoming second album. -------------------- MANN FRIDAY TO LAUNCH 'THE ORCHARD' Since forming in June 2001 this five-piece group (mostly) from Zimbabwe has recorded a 10-track demo album and notched up over 70 live gigs around the Cape. The group also won against 30 other Cape Town bands in the Last Band Standing competition. In June, Mann Friday performed the nostalgic rock opera, 'Zimbabwean Ruins', at the Grahamstown Arts Festival for five nights, selling out all dates and hauling in rave reviews. As a result, the 'Zimbabwean Ruins' production is being brought to Cape Town in November (and may find its way to some overseas festivals). In early 2002, the members of Mann Friday quit their jobs, relocated an entire studio outfit to an apple farm on the banks of the Theewaterskloof Dam, and moved into the lakeside cottage for 52 days. There, along with a producer and engineer, they workshopped, recorded and produced 'The Orchard', their fascinating and spirited 11-song debut album. 'The Orchard' includes certain songs from the 'Zimbabwean Ruins' production and will be launched at the Riverclub in Observatory on Sat Oct 26. See 'Concerts' below for the details of that and other gigs. ------------------- WESTERN CAPE MUSICIANS FORUM The Western Cape Musicians Forum (WCMF) is an initiative recently set up by venue owners, musicians, media members and recording industry representatives to improve the viability of live music in the Western Cape and to represent the common interests of all live musicians in the Western Cape. However the WCMF needs to proceed with the mandate and ongoing input of all interested parties. Therefore they will need to elect an executive committee of individuals who have the skills, time and will to fulfil various portfolios on the WCMF. The organisers are asking everybody to consider nominations to this committee in advance and encourage anyone who feels that they would like to get involved to put themselves forward. Anyone who has specific skills or interests is welcome to stand. They encourage anyone from all genres, including jazz musicians, folk clubs and cover bands to stand for election to ensure that your specific concerns are addressed. The elected committee will assume the mandate to represent all Western Cape Musicians unless exceptions or objections are made. Meetings - The WCMF meets on the 1st Monday of every month at 206 (the Mercury Lounge) at 8pm. Please feedback to the Western Cape Musicians Forum at mailto:niki@3i.co.za until an official WCMF address and website are set up. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- SA ROCK DIGEST TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.samp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ Anton Goosen's brand new single 'Pampoene Oppie Dak' is a bouncy fast-paced tune about the girls who can never forget their small-town heritage (and a good thing too!). This track is taken off the ''n Vis Innie Bos' CD and features the violin-playing of Sons Of Trout's Mike Rennie. For those of you who are not aware that Anton also sings in English (c'mon you know who are!), Anton has authorized mp3s of 'Dancer' and 'Come To London' off his 'Danzer' CD from 1992. Both these songs are also on his 'Riviersonderend - 21 Greatest Hits' CD released in 1994. 'Dancer' is a wonderful afro-pop style song (penny whistle and all) which encourages the listener to, well, dance. In 'Come To London' Anton implores us to come to London while Stellenbosch goodtime band Skallabrak look at the other side of South Africans in London in 'Permitte Word Gereël' ("al wat jy hoor is 'mind the gap!'") Bruce Watermeyer and the members of The Led have approved 2 tracks off last year's '8 Days' CD which went to number 1 on the SA Rock Digest album charts. Download their number 1 hit 'And I Reason' and also 'Working Day' (a #4 hit). 'Hoenderman' by Kobus! refuses to leave the charts (its been there since May!) and ENT Music have kindly okayed another track off their debut album. The slow melodic 'Jou Oë' is very different to the uptempo 'Hoenderman' and will give newcomers to Kobus! a better understanding of their depth and range. Another long-timer on the SA Rock Digest charts is Ian Henderson with the wonderful 'Beautiful Life' which spent 18 weeks on the charts. Ian's new song (also off the chart-topping 'Freefall') is 'I Believe' (which is not a cover version, but an Ian Henderson original) and features the superb sax-playing of Paul Kock. 340ml ("340 millilitres" is the capacity of a beerbottle!) are from Moçambique and Rui Soeiro has approved an mp3 of the slow-grooving reggae sound of 'Michelle'. Chill, baby. The rollicking 'Die Son Sak...' ('The Sun Sets In Durbanville') is the tragic story of 2 young lovers, Kobus & Karen, and is classic rock and roll, particularly the piano solo by Simon Orange (from the Blues Broers, Frosted Orange and soon to be heard on tour with Steve Louw & Big Sky). Drums on most tracks are by Francious Kruger (Springbok Nude Girls), bass is by Schalk Joubert (Billygoat, Sons Of Trout, Anton Goosen and also part of the new Big Sky tour) and guitars by Anton L'Amour (Koos Kombuis, Karen Zoid). Oh, and of course Valiant Swart on vocals, guitar, harmonica and bass. Kwaito, hip-hop, rock, Afrikaans rock, blues, reggae, house, electronica and other genres that have yet to be named are all included on these cover discs each month. And the October issue of SL is no exception. There are 15 tracks including songs from Frosted Orange, Ian Henderson, Fuzigish, Skwatta Kamp, Ryan Dent, Zen Arcade and Mikanic. Some of the tracks are also exclusive to 'Selection' making them real collector's items. Each song and artist is given a well-written and brief profile inside the magazine as well. Oh, and each month there are usually a couple of overseas artists thrown in as well. This month's CD has 2 or 3 including Badly Drawn Boy's 'Silent Sigh' from the 'About A Boy' soundtrack - nice choice. The highly rated five-piece have also included their debut album, 'So There We Were' as a free bonus disc in the same packaging. Cutting Jade's line-up is Shaun Collins (g), Jörn Dannheimer (d), Andrew Duggan (v), Raoul Dippenaar (g), and Marliese Botha (b). The band built a strong live following in Pretoria before signing to DGR 12 months ago, and have subsequently headlined many of the major SA festivals, had a 5FM Top 40 No.1, and appeared on 'Playlisted', the 5FM hit compilation. The first single off 'Between Two Lives' is '10 Seconds', which has already racked up top spot on seven SA radio stations over the past months. The second single to be released will be the storming 'Look At Me Now', and another three songs could also be released over the next few months. The bonus 'So There We Were' CD features some special mixes of that first album's tracks, as well as the semi-rare mix of the song, 'She Says', that was previously only available on the 5FM 'Showcase 3: Unearthed' compilation from 2001. The band is signed to New York-based Wind Up Records and their latest single, 'Sympathetic', can be currently heard all over the radio in SA. 'Disclaimer' picked up a three star rating in a review in the September issue of Rolling Stone magazine. Under the heading "A South African slice of Nirvana", reviewer Robert Cherry threw in some other "Seattle in the '90's" comparisons referring to Shaun Morgan's "Eddie Vedder vocal timbre" and describing the song 'Fine Again' as "a jackhammer lullaby that carries the DNA of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit". The review concludes with the observation that "there's not much optimism here, but a little toe-tapping catharsis counts for a lot". Cape Town pop rockers Semisane, fresh from a storming gig at the recent 'Woodstock 4' festival, will soon be releasing their new album, with the first single, 'Girlfriend (Of Mine)', being released to national radio this week. Fellow Cape Town resident and recent 'Backstage' guest Justin Bergh (see 'News' above) is currently over in the US doing record label showcases in New York. East Rand-based power trio Siamese - who by all accounts also took Woodstock apart - will shortly re-release their EP, 'Three Piece Project', to include their 'Fear Factor' theme song entitled 'Fear'. Also look out for a number of the above-mentioned artists appearing on the 'Fear Factor' compilation album coming soon. 'Idols' winner Heinz Winckler is wrapping up the recording of his much anticipated debut album (if it is, as anticipated, a cover version album, then maybe they should call it 'Heinz Makes Beens'?). Also keep an ear on popular Jo'burg-based punksters Tweak, as their album 'The Romantic Lure Of Possum Worship', spurred on by their latest radio hit, 'Sweet Memories', continues to rack up impressive sales. * the band formerly known as saron gas Read http://www.cd.co.za/legends/2000plus/saron_gas.html Buy http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&searchfor=saron gas --------------- MORE REVIEWS --------------- More reviews can be found at: Open Record http://www.openrecord.co.za Amuzine http://www.cd.co.za/reviews.htm ______________________________________________ 4.CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ---------------- SOUTH AFRICAN ROCK 'N ROLL IN THE 60s Part 2 of 2 Johnny Kongos arrived in London in 1966 and formed Floribunda Rose with various ex-pat South Africans. After one unsuccessful single they evolved into a paisley group called Scrugg and released an outstanding single called 'I Wish I Was Five' (1968). After two more singles the group split in 1969 and Kongos went on to a successful solo career (as John Kongos) with his 1971 hit 'He's Gonna Step On You Again' (hit UK #4, later successfully covered by the Happy Mondays as 'Step On') followed by the African chant 'Tokoloshe Man' (another UK #4). Meanwhile down in the south drummer Robbie Kearney, a one time G-Man filled the drumming position for the A-Cads. To complete the circle Peter Rimmer recruited an outstanding guitarist Dick Laws, after cajoling him over a pint to return to South Africa. Then came the humorous Scot, Sam Evans, a vocalist to be proud of, and bass guitarist Les Goode, an Englishman who was formerly with John E Sharpe & the Squires. (made his name while touring South Africa with Billy Forrest). Their debut single, 'Hungry For Love' (b-side 'Road Runner') broke into the charts while the group was on a Rhodesian / Zambian tour. The ill winds of political change blew from the north in the late sixties when Gram Parsons and the Byrds arrived for an ill-fated tour which resulted in Gram leaving the group. To add to the fury many will remember the disastrous performance by the robotic un-emotional Troggs at the Three Arts Theatre. Things got even worse when Barclay James Harvest played to an unappreciative audience at the Stellenbosch Town Hall. What a long and strange trip its been and grateful or dead, it all formed part of a change that Dylan sung about. The next curtain about to open gave way to the extravagant prog rock of Freedom's Children, Hawk, Suck and Abstract Truth. But now the darkly shadows of Fascist politics would weave its spell upon those reaching for freedom. The space for African rock was now limited to border and colour. The whole album is a wonderful listen, but, like you, I have favorite songs on any album. 'Donkerpad' cautions wanderers not to get lost, with hints of blues legend Robert Johnson. 'Maanhare' and 'Horison Hotel' comment on transient urban life, the high and the low rollers. 'Matrooslied' is a quiet, metaphorical song using sea and nautical imagery. 'Whisky 'n Reën', and 'Waar Die Dromers Dwaal' talk to me about relationships and dreams. The tinges of the Country & Western-South African-rock-reggae genre that have popped up on Valiant's previous work are not here. Here is more Valiant and less splash from other places, except for the Western guitar twang he plays like he holds its international trademark. Valiant Swart consistently does good work, and often surprises me, too. I first thought he was a folkie, after hearing 'Dorpstraat Revisited'. Then I thought he was a rock 'n' roller with a talent for songwriting on 'Die Mystic Boer'. Then there is the profound 'Deur die Donker Vallei'. Now 'Maanhare', a work unlike his others except how he marks it by his talent, style, and friends. The lyrics and music blend perfectly, each ideally suited to the other. While 'Maanhare' tends toward mid-tempo and slow, it does move with an easy art, and Valiant is all of these: folkie, rocker, writer, mystic Boer, and the ubiquitous et cetera. In fact, I feel this is a personal album. I identify with these songs, they sing for me. The opening track 'Donkerpad' reminds me of my wandering years, 'Matrooslied' is for my meditative moments, 'Diep in Die Bos' is where I live, and so on. A personal album, personal for me. The band and a few friends add up to a healthy list in the credits, like this: Liela Groenewald, Tonia Selley, Anika, Schalk Joubert, Simon Orange, Barry van Zyl, Albert Frost, Anton L'Amour, Willem Fourie, Mike Rennie, and Jaco Viljoen. From across the Atlantic, Afrikaans music sounds like exciting and fresh, a vibrant and creative music scene. In that scene, Valiant is one of the Big Three, and, personally, this album has exquisite beauty. Although the album starts with the heavier rock drenched 'Bomber' with its chorus of clashing vocals, it soon calms down to a simmering pot of tortured emotion, but it does speed up occasionally for heavier tunes like 'Infidel'. This dark rock, reminiscent of Alice in Chains, pervades the album, spreading a sense of desolation and desperation. These songs pierce your psyche drilling to your very core with their grinding guitar, edgy drumming and biting lyrics. It does not and cannot rest easily on the ears, yet is arresting and demanding of your attention. The mournful sounds of Brendan Jury's viola adds a sinister quality to the album and this matches the rather scary photo's of the band in the sleeves notes. Lyrics like 'No One is every going to hurt you like I do' further this intense feeling. The vocals either lash out against the harder rocking tunes, or melt in with the quieter ones, quite dark and bordering on the psychotic. Perhaps the most unsettling of all is the drum 'n bass beats and disturbing sounds on the Gaston Goliath remix of 'Dissolve'. It is a difficult track to listen to and makes the rest of the album far more accessible. Despite being somewhat chilling, this is not an album to chill out to. It's hard, bruising and uncompromising, both musically and lyrically. It should really carry a sticker warning the purchaser that listening to this could seriously disturb your mind. Strangely the song had been wandering around the rest of the top 20 for 5 weeks, climbing to 6 and then dropping to 8 before it suddenly took hold of the record buying population and rocketed to the top. Lauren Copley had recorded her first record at the tender age of 11. 3 years later she had her first top 20 hit with 'Flower of Life', and a year after that she was in the top 5. Reg de Beer is probably better known for his radio work in South Africa, yet in 1977 he hit the top 5 with 'We Salute' You', his only top 20 hit. Peter McCann clung to the top spot despite some good pressure from Brotherhood of Man. Trio and the Pet Shop Boys also held on to their top spots in 1982 and 1987 respectively. Trio were enjoying their 2nd week at the top while the Pet Shop Boys where spending their 4th there. Chris Rea found himself in the top 5 for the first time with his second top 20 hit 'Let's Dance'. This was not a cover of the David Bowie song of a few years earlier. There were no South African Artists at number 1 this week. ------------ BIRTHDAYS 14 Cliff Richard (1940) 14 Alan Garrity (1947) 15 Chris de Burgh (1948) 18 Chuck Berry (1926) 21 Manfred Mann (1940) 22 Mike Eager (1953) 24 Peter Hanmer (Off The Edge, 1959) ------------- MABU VINYL http://www.sarockdigest.com/mabu Cape Town's finest record shop @ 34 Kloof Street, Gardens (by Longkloof Studios) Little Ronnie Joyce and Jonathan Butler - 'It Takes Two' (LP) The Genuines - 'Goema' (LP) Rabbitt - 'A Croak And A Grunt In The Night' (LP) Rabbitt - 'Boys Will Be Boys' (LP) Rabbitt - 'Rock Rabbitt' (LP) Various - 'Concert In The Park' (2LP) Cash paid for records in saleable condition. Mostly you guys got the details right. A couple of things, though ... Rob van der Linde and I were originally a duo and Monica joined us, along with Kevin Yates and Len Ericksen to form Round The House, named after a Chieftains dance set. You should know that the Irish stuff we did was absolutely NOT of the pub singalong variety, but closer to Planxty/Bothy Band/De Dannan etc (in intention, if not execution). I also played the tin whistle in that outfit. Monica, Kevin and Len were then replaced by Thijs Ruhrup from Holland and Floyd Stamm, a preacher from the USA who had been a steel player with country stars Eddy Arnold and Cowboy Copas (who died in the Patsy Cline plane crash), who was much older than us, and who was a superb dobro player as well. Eventually Thijs joined the Silver Creek Mountain Band and we did a couple of electric country-rock gigs with Paul Slatter (ex-Shinnery) on fiddle and Glen Turrell and Dennis Brunton (both very much ex-Howard Carpendale's Kinsmen) on bass and drums respectively, before Robert, Glen, Dennis and I were joined by Zimbabwe's ex-Holy Black guitarist/harmonica player Nic Pickard and we changed the name of the band to Roundhouse and the style closer to general roots rock. This band lasted a couple of years until Nic went to Johannesburg where he started his recording studio. A couple of guys filled in on guitar for a while, but the band eventually fell apart. Last year there was only one night dedicated to punk and hardcore bands but this year the format changed and there were at least two punk bands playing every night of the festival. First up on the list (and by complete chance the first band to play at the festival) was Sedwick the Salesman. At 7 PM the doors opened and people started to flock in. The sound was probably the best STS have ever had and as a result proceeded to playing a ripping one-hour set including all the favourites and a cover of 'Time Warp' from the 'Rocky Horror Picture Show'. Serving Suggestion really impressed me, and their new-found punk rock style works very well. They gave the crowd a very energetic set and were forced to play the song 'Grateful' twice by a screaming crowd. Both bands had the pit heaving and provided a very good start to the festival. On the second night everyone prepared themselves for a night of 'Hard Core' and, hopefully, an insane moshpit. The crowd was not disappointed, Not Guilty was first on the bill, the first chord was played, and the pit started moving. With a very tight set these guys rocked the stage. Their new drummer added some volume and power to the set. The bass sounded really phat seeing that there was such a big amp on stage and the bassist played a ripping bass line to the new song (which has no name). One can always expect an awesome show when Aftertaste play, and they didn't disappoint. It was a wild show on stage, and I think Wilber stole the hearts of some future bass players with a crowd of five guys staring his bass out of his hands The third night hailed the return of the punk bands to the stage, and the Durban-based loonies, Roshdag, opened. They seemed to have lost some of the energy that they had last year but didn't disappoint the crowd. They played their very entertaining song, 'No More Stealing', and I can safely say that almost everybody in that hall was skanking it up. They also told a very interesting story between songs about their tour through SA. Next up on the stage was Late Night Showing, the melodic threesome from the Eastern Cape. They also provided a thoroughly entertaining set and did a very good cover of 'Chick Magnet' by MXPX before a rather large punk with a Mohawk decided that it would be a good idea to render himself concussed by stage diving, with no one ready to catch him. The last night came and everybody managed to drag themselves to their feet and skank one last time to the sounds of Crystal Clear and Quoin. Crystal Clear really impressed the crowd that night with their amazingly good covers of Dogwood songs and the diversity of the set they played. These boys from Cape Town are going to go far and have already got a reasonable bunch of roadies following them around. Quoin played a rather disappointing set as their rhythm guitarist broke his amp and could not get a reasonable distortion out of the one he borrowed. All in all the four day 'New Song' festival showcased some of the best punk/ hard core bands around today and everybody went home very tired but really amped for next years festival.
