It is called 'MP3', and it is by Steve Louw. 'MP3' is one of the songs on 'Beyond The Blue', the just-released fourth studio album by Steve Louw and Big Sky. 'MP3' offers Steve Louw's view on this new way of promoting music online. 'Beyond The Blue' has 11 songs including 'Flying', 'Chainsaw Blues', 'The Road Ahead' and 'The Story Of Vicky And Dan', and features drummer Anton Fig (ex-Hammak, ex-Spider, currently with Paul Schafer's house band on the David Letterman Show in the USA), Keith Lentin (ex-Alpha Set, ex-Hammak, ex-Spider, bass), Blondie Chaplin (ex-Flames, ex-Beach Boys, ex-Rolling Stones, guitar, backing vocals), Pat Thrall (ex-Asia, ex-Meatloaf, ex-Glenn Hughes/Pat Thrall, guitar), Adam Holzman (ex-Miles Davis, ex-Chaka Khan, solo, piano and keyboards), and Steve Louw on acoustic guitar and vocals. 'Beyond The Blue' was produced and mixed by Kevin Shirley at Hit Factory in New York City. Here's an extract from the lyrics of the song 'MP3': "The MP3 means a lot to me, I'm back on my feet, I'm not down on my knees; The MP3 means a lot to me, You get your tunes, I get my royalties." SAMP3.com is about promoting and marketing SA music online to encourage sales of CDs in South Africa and internationally. Many SA labels and artists already understand this, and SAMP3.com is getting flooded with songs from new, unsigned, and unheard artists, as well as old campaigners like Steve Louw, Koos Kombuis, Roger Lucey, Piet Botha, Sons Of Trout, Amanda Strydom and Anton Goosen. Big Sky's new track, 'MP3', is available to download at http://www.SAMP3.com/mp3.html by kind permission of Steve Louw and is also available on the official Steve Louw & Big Sky website at http://www.SteveLouw.com --------------- WOODSTOCK 4 - BLUNT STAGE 2002 LINE-UP The annual 'Woodstock 4' SA music festival again takes place at the Aventura Resort in Heidelberg, Gauteng over the weekend of 26, 27, 28, and 29 September 2002. NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------- ------ MP3s ------ 'BELIEVE' - MAURI MONCADA This outstanding demo track has been raising eyebrows and ear hair since its first spin on the Digest beatbox. Some thought it was an obvious wind-up by someone sending us an album track off one of the better contemporary US modern rock bands. But Mauri Moncada, a young Cape Town Varsity College student, confirmed that he wrote, recorded, produced and played the entire track on his own at the City Varsity Studios in Gardens, apart from the drums which were played by Craig Schouw. Some around here were/are still unconvinced... Mauri picked up all those performing and recording skills as frontman for the band Koosh (mmm, me neither!), but was keen to work alone in the studio. The slow-burning 'Believe' is the first song to be released, with 'Reflection' and 'Turn The Page' to follow soon. Mauri Moncada is planning a gig at The Independent Armchair Theatre on October 20th (tbc) after finishing his exams and before he heads off for a six month trip to the US. He must be sure to take this demo with him! Listen to 'Believe' by Mauri at http://www.samp3.com ------------ 'DON'T SAY' & 'ALL EYES ON ME' - SEVEN DAY STORY Aidan Harper has been in the SA music industry for some years now, as a member of the original Awakening and later as sound engineer for Black Diamond. But music was the last thing on his mind when he visited the Cash Converters branch in Brackenfell a while back. He saw a video player priced at R50, and the shop assistant, Michael Naranjo, told him that it only played in black and white. Naranjo also told him that he had a pretty decent band called Seven Day Story and gave Harper a copy of the band's new demo. Harper subsequently discovered to his joy that the video actually played in colour as well (there was a special switch on the back which they had both missed), and that Seven Day Story was indeed a very impressive band. So Aidan Harper is now the manager of Seven Day Story, and Michael Naranjo (lead vocals, guitar), Darin Martini (drums), and Neil McKay (lead and rhythm guitars, backing vocals) are the members of the rock trio behind these power rock songs. Naranjo has already recorded two solo albums and one album with an earlier Seven Day Story line-up. This sparkling demo is the first by this current line-up who have been working together for the past six months. 'Don't Say' and 'All Eyes On Me' are already getting a lot of airplay courtesy of Barney Simon and Mark Pilgrim at 5Fm. This story should run for longer then just a week! 'Geraamtes in jou kas' is about the nightmares that are suffered by the soldiers that had to go into the townships to "maintain the peace". "Jy onthou die vure/ en die wiele van 'n Casspir/ en die reuk van brandende rubber/ deur die neus van jou gasmasker". To mis-quote Syd (Kitchen, not Barrett), this song (and the whole album) is not for sissies, but the brave listener who ventures into this Restricted Area will be rewarded with some very unrestricted Afrikaans Rock. DNA Strings tunes are haunting tunes, and the upbeat numbers are fun and carefree. Their all-instrumental debut makes for ideal and refreshing background music for both coffee shops and beach parties. The Irish fiddling on some of the traditional influenced songs with African djembe drumming sets off the long slow and atmospheric beauty of the ballads." This is the first time that the band's debut seven song album from 1984 is available on CD, although the hit, 'See Yourself (Clowns)', has already made a few SA compilation appearances. The bonus tracks on this welcome reissue include a version of 'Once Awake', recorded live at the Chelsea in 1984, and 'See Yourself (Clowns)' from the band's slot on the historic 'Concert In The Park' at Ellis Park in January 1985. From Heather Mac and Tim Parr's first meeting at Mangles in 1981, until the band eventually disbanded in 1991, Ella Mental continued to strike a popular chord among the edgy '80's SA rock fans. With a settled line-up of Heather Mac (vocals), Tim Parr (guitars, vocals), Adrian Levi (bass), and Herman Eungster (drums), Ella Mental's music and travels took them around South Africa before the band left to try their luck in Ireland, England and eventually the US. The members of Ella Mental are all still actively involved in the music industry, and Deon Maas' excellent liner notes trace their history as "one of the greatest groups ever in this country". Listen to 'Uncomplicated Dreams' and you'll know why! Tracklisting: 'See Yourself (Clowns)', 'Magic Mother', 'Dancing In The Moonlight', 'Pressure (I'm Getting Stronger)', 'Ain't Nobody Like You (Uncomplicated Dreams)', 'Wet Washing', 'Monsters'. The group launched the Joe South composition 'Hush', which went to the fourth position in the USA charts. The alternative generation of the Nineties would again be bombarded by this classic via son of actress Haley Mills, Crispian and his group Kula Shaker. Deep Purple resided in the States, and rumour has it that Ian Paice almost got drafted due to the time they spent across the pond. The 'Hush' single pre-empted their debut 'Shades of Deep Purple'. The group covered the Beatles track 'Help' which was probably the finest rendition ever applied to wax. The 'Shades of Deep Purple' album also spewed forth an untidy version of the Skip James-penned 'I'm So Glad'. The inclusion of 'Hey Joe' in the style of Hendrix (thanks to Tim Rose), opens with the Hammond vibrato theme 'The Miller's dance' (from a ballet score called 'The Three Cornered Hat' by Spaniard Manual De Falla). In November 1968 Deep Purple launched their cover of the Neil Diamond single 'Kentucky Woman' which went to #38 in the US. The American influence was decidedly based on covers and a further onslaught of the Ellie Greenwich, Phil Spector & Jeff Barry composition 'River Deep, Mountain High' (a US #88 for Ike & Tina Turner in 1966) went to #53. An original track, the slicing 'Emmaretta', only managed to reach #128, and still Deep Purple were unable to crack the charts in their UK homeland. In June 1969 the group launched their 'Book Of Taliesyn' album. The opening track, 'Listen, learn and read on', was dramatically inspiring with authoritative narration by Rod Evans. The reading carried its flow into Rod Evan's next association, 'Captain Beyond', and a similarly devised composition entitled 'As the moon speaks (to the waves of the sea)'. The 'Book of Taliesyn' also reflected an ambient and complex structure entitled 'Anthem', which has Jon Lord utilising the mellotron. The album also contains the instrumental 'Wring That Neck', which became a magnum opus in Purple's live set. On this driving classic, Ritchie Blackmore would sometimes stretch the set up to 30 minutes with heavy improvisation. A similar experience would evolve out of 'Mandrake Root'. Continued next week... The Band: Ian Gillan - vocals, Steve Morse - guitar, Roger Glover - bass, Ian Paice - drums, Don Airey - keyboards, guest appearance by Jon Lord - keyboards The Setlist: Fireball, Woman From Tokyo, Mary Long, Ted The Mechanic, Lazy, The Well Dressed Guitar, When A Blind Man Cries, Space Truckin', Perfect Strangers, Speed King, Smoke On The Water, Encores: Hush, Black Night, Highway Star The Review: All right, so I was there, when Deep Purple played at the Apollo Hammersmith in London on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th of September 2002. I'm glad I was there, because these two concerts were very good. It was the first time I saw them at two concerts back-to-back, and that gave me a new insight as to how good musicians Deep Purple really are (as if I didn't know that already...). That band was unbelievably tight, and from the first drum roll of 'Fireball' they were really giving it all they could. Roger and Steve were often right up front with the audience, touching them, and Roger and Steve let the audience fiddle with their guitars quite a lot - to my surprise. Roger often lost plectrums because of this, and had to improvise while getting back to his amps for new plectrums. Speaking of Roger and his bass playing; the long bass solo in 'Speed King' gave me a flashback of old Ritchie Blackmore's dramatic tricks; melodic, partly repetitive, and sudden dramatic changes in volume and tone. All in a different feel though, as this was Roger Glover. Delicious! The shows lasted for one hour and forty minutes, but with a lot of songs. Ian Paice was driving the show forward with enormous force. Ian Gillan didn't even have time to get to the jokes and comments, as Ian Paice started the next song almost right next to the end of the previous one. It helped keep the motion of the concert going, and I just stood there swaying in the breeze of it all - enjoying it all. And then the surprise; Jon Lord's appearance at the start of 'Perfect Strangers'. Now, I do feel that Don Airey is doing a very good job. His percussive style fits Deep Purple just perfectly, but he does not have the sheer force of presence that Jon Lord has. And now I am going to try to say two things at the same time; it was enormously good to see Jon Lord at the Hammond - it was my main reason for being at the concert - and his playing is admirable, but I somehow got the feeling that an era was past and that he somehow didn't have anything to add to the performance anymore, and that Don would do equally good. That is, if Don can be a little less subdued; he needs to stop being so anonymous. But he will learn, as Steve has done. I never thought I would say something like this, because Jon Lord is really my hero, and actually one of the reasons I'm in music business, but I am looking tremendously forward to Jon Lord's solo outing in the years to come, as I believe he has a lot of ideas that will no longer fit into Deep Purple, but be perfect in a solo setting. Having said that, I must add that when Don and Jon shared solo duties during the encores (they even played four-hand on the Hammond!), that was just awesome. Two really great players having fun, pouring out their craft and musicianship without any restrictions. And when Jon leaves stage, he even takes the time to shakes hand for a "thank you" to the keyboard technician. Man, that is one cultivated artist! During 'Smoke On The Water' we had the "fan appearance" from the Iron Maiden guys (Nicko McBrain, Bruce Dickinson & Janick Gers) and during the encores Don and Jon did completely different things from the first to the second night. The two shows were very tight and seemed to leave no room for haphazard improvisation, but watching the two shows back-to-back clearly showed that this band can twist anything around as they want to, with a perfect balance of the familiar and the unexpected. They often joke with us musically, trying to confuse us of what is coming next. And another thing: usually Deep Purple songs (when played live) have a clear ending with everyone stopping at the same time. On these two concerts it was not so; there was always someone (often Steve and Big Ian) who wanted to make more noise even after the song was over. It was as if they didn't wanted to music to stop. I know the feeling - and I agree; I don't want the music of Deep Purple to stop. There is just too much life in there. Terje Winther, Norway (Reprinted here by kind permission) -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music THE DREAM MERCHANTS -- 'PREDICTIONS AND THINGS' (Decca 1966, re-issued on CD by Gallo in 1991) Sparkling pop, and some folk-pop songs. These two singing guys (Billy Forrest & Billy Andrews) make a folk sound, but most of the songs are decidedly pop. Their few forays into then-modern folk are, for me, their strongest moments. Though I have a wide and deep appreciation of Sixties and Seventies pop, I'd have to say the standout tunes on 'Predictions and Things' are those with more meaningful lyrics than a boy-girl song such as 'Can't Live Without You Can't Live With You'. These more resonant songs include 'The Land of Milk and Honey', 'No Time', 'Time and the River', 'The Rattler', and 'Love Minus Zero'. And that's almost half of the CD. The rest certainly are pleasant, but these songs make me listen. Among the pop songs are love songs, of course. There's no harm in a love song. There's even the classic R&B song, 'Land of a Thousand Dances' given a nice treatment here (with "La-las" instead of "Na-nas"). A nice version of Phil Ochs's 'Changes' is included and proves again why it is covered so often. It readily becomes the song of whoever is singing it. A pretty and versatile folk song. 'Predictions and Things' is folk-pop with a difference, and an odd cover photo. No echoes of Simon and Garfunkel here, The Dream Merchants aren't that pretentious. But if I had to compare their sound, I'd say it is reminiscent of the Righteous Brothers. The Dream Merchants do it light, bouncy, and occasionally meaningful. Clark, startled from his apparent daydream stutters an apology, catches up to Lois who had gained a few paces on him and retreats into his 'daydream'. However, what Lois can not appreciate, but what the viewer can, is that Clark is actually in Superman mode, and his hypersensitive ears have picked up a most distressing sound. Distressing that is to him and his fellow Superhero's as there is a new Superhero in town threatening their box office supremacy. This new Superhero goes by the name of Scabby Annie, and it's not just one man, it's four. These four upstarts from planet SA, landed in 1997 and spent the last few years of the decade making some thrashy punky noise that must have had numerous parents shouting 'TURN THAT RACKET DOWN!!!' This usually marks an album as one to listen to and 'Superhero 2000' is one to listen to and listen to loud. It may be thrashy, but it is certainly melodic punk that has that sense of abandonment that makes it fun. Throughout the album, there's the grinding guitar that underlies the punk sound, there's the wild banging of drums, and anger-tinged voice. It's punk that you can pogo around your room to, singing along at the top of your voice, banging your head and forgetting your worries. Tracks like 'What it Takes' and 'The Crunch' and 'Hanging out with Dave' are punk gems while the hidden track is not for those who are squeamish about various bodily functions. Superman crashes through the front door of Way Cool records, looking anything but way cool. He hasn't shaven for a few days, and he's been drinking. There's a ragged look about the man with his underpants on outside his tights. 'Scabby Annie! He roars, your time is up.' Hearing the commotion, the band saunters calmly out of the studio and confronts this sad excuse for a superhero. Pointing his laser loaded finger at the 4 lads, he roar 'Ask yourselves, do you feel lucky punks?' As the sparkling blue beam shoots out from his super fingertip, lead singer Jody Preshous grabs a nearby copy of 'Superhero 2000' and defends the group with it. The laser beam hits the kryptonite coated disc, causing the room to reverberate to the sound of the Scabbies in full cry and simultaneously causing Superman to be fried to a small heap of ash. We can't wait to hear Scabby Annie take on Spiderman (who, by the way, is not the Eight-Legged Groove Machine). Peter McCann entered the top 5 in 1977 with his US top 5 hit 'Do you wanna make love'. Well, its a 40 year old instrumental called 'Green Onions' and it was a #3 hit in the US in 1962 for Booker T & The MGs. The best version I've ever heard of this song is the live version performed by Booker T & The MGs at the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Museum in Cleveland in 1995. The MGs (Memphis Group) were also the House Band for the evening. {And I suppose it's just co-incidence that "Audi" means "to listen" in Latin? - ed} ----------------- AG PLEEZ DEDDY - JEREMY TAYLOR Hugh Taylor asks how he can get a copy of this Jeremy Taylor song on CD. (Weekly Audio Visual Experiment) Tuesday 17 The Most Amazing Show Wednesday 18 Perez Unplugged Much fanfare has been made of this band and their combination of melodic hooks, grinding guitars and the very different vocal styles of the two front men, Nic Olsen and Matt Wilkinson. Perez are on a National Tour during September to promote the re-release of their debut album 'Picture Perfect'. The album includes one new song and a bonus disc with five acoustic tracks. Also on the album are the three no. 1 hits, 'Wasted Out', 'Picture Perfect', and 'Dreams and Troubles'. Their latest single, the ABBA classic 'Mama Mia' (currently at no. 2 on 5Fm) is not on the album, but is available as a single at CD stores. Thursday 19 Straight and Narrow Line up: Mark Fransman (leader and composer): Fender Rhodes; Lee Thompson: Trumpet; Buddy Wells: Soprano and Tenor Saxophones; Dominic Peters: Double-Bass and Sean O Tim: Drums, samples, loops The group fuses the hard bop jazz quintet sound (of the late 1950's eg. Jazz Messengers) with the compositional and harmonic structures of the 'new' jazz sound, incorporating such rhythms as drum-and-bass, jungle, hip-hop, funk and South African rhythms into compositions, making the music accessible to jazz-heads and/or dance heads. All the music performed by the group is original and composed and arranged by Mark Fransman. Friday 20 Steve Newman Saturday 21 V d Want/Letcher and Benguela Double Bill Van der Want/Letcher released the spoof EP 'ep Tombi' late in 1997 and then released their first full-length CD, 'Low Riding', recorded by Lloyd Ross, in 1998. 'Low Riding' received much critical acclaim and was nominated in two categories in the 1998 South African Music Awards. Van der Want/Letcher recorded their latest CD, 'Bignity' with Lloyd Ross in Cape Town between September 2000 and March 2001. They are currently on a National tour to promote 'Bignity', which has already received massive acclaim. This will be their only gig in CT. Benguela will do a set before and will also be playing a few songs with Chris and Matt, so this one is going to be very cool indeed! Details are subject to change.
