These short and punchy pieces covered a wide range of cultural genres and activities in the Cape, and are sorely missed by arts fans and publicists alike, due to Lucey's constant enthusiasm for exposing the new and the interesting. Lucey left e-TV a while back, but his curious and searching nature began an unexpected new chapter in this SA singer-songwriter's musical career. Lucey had been listening to a copy of the Putamayo album, 'From Dublin To Dakar', a compilation which focused on the Celtic music traditions and the sweep of its influence and popularity through Europe and parts of Africa. A track by the Modena City Ramblers caught his attention due to its Italian lyrics, and Lucey played it to Dan Chiorboli, his close musical colleague and the man behind the Awesome Africa annual musical festival in KwazuluNatal. Through the Awesome Africa Festival, Chiorboli has established a fruitful exchange program with Italy. On his following trip to Italy, Chiorboli made contact with the Modena City Ramblers and invited them to the next Awesome Africa festival. This led to the Modena City Ramblers' collaboration with Landscape Prayers on the Durban group's album 'Lontana' in 2001. This Italian connection also saw Roger Lucey touring Italy in 2001 with an extremely controversial, Italo-Celtic, Euro-socialist group called Casa Del Vento. Since then, Lucey has been working to complete his new album, 'Gypsy Soul', which he made with percussionist Dan Chiorboli and Brendan Jury on viola. 'Gypsy Soul' is Lucey's first album proper since 'Half Alive' in 1982. The release of 'Gypsy Soul' will begin a yearlong project between Lucey, Chiorboli, Jury, and the Modena City Ramblers, which will result in a collaborative album called 'Songs Of The Revolution'. Thereafter the trio will be accompanying the Italians on the Modena City Ramblers World Tour in 2003, taking in countries like Mexico, Cuba, Argentina, Venezuela, Chile, Brazil, Romania, Spain, and finally Italy. Roger Lucey will also be travelling to Denmark to attend the opening of the Royal Danish Film Society conference on music and censorship. This conference will be opened by a screening of a documentary made by Free Muse, a Danish organisation who examines censorship in music. The documentary features the overlapping stories of Roger Lucey and Paul Erasmus, the apartheid cop who worked to harass and ultimately destroy this SA folkie's career. Roger Lucey's debut album was called 'The Road Is Much Longer', quite prophetic don't you think, Paul? Next week Kurt Shoemaker reviews 'The Road Is Much Longer' under his 'USA for Africa' section. The SSQ spoke of their commitment to music education and to breaking down the myths and stereotypes about so-called Eurocentric instruments or classical music education and went further to explain the importance of building an industry where young people can "make a living out of playing violin". The six-month weekly workshop series is aimed at aspiring musicians and the music-loving public at large. The birth of the concept is through a unique partnership between the retail sector and development world, Compact Disc Wherehouse & Paul Bothner`s Music, who are committed to assisting with the promotion and development of musicians and the music environment of South Africa. See 'Concerts' section below for dates for The Living Workshops series for September. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- SA ROCK DIGEST TOP 30 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.samp3.com This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. This track was composed by Joe South (born Joseph Souter, 28 Feb 1940, Atlanta, Georgia). Released on a single by Deep Purple it reached number 4 in the USA in September 1968, achieving the first million-selling single for both composer and artist. Originally recorded by Billy Joe Royal (and produced by South) in October 1967 reaching US #52. Also recorded by Joe South himself, and released as a single in 1970 and on 'The Best Of Joe South' in 1990. Recorded by Kula Shaker in May 1997 in a very similar style to Deep Purple's version and released as the title track of a CD single which went to #2 in the UK. Cape Town band Desert Velvet also play an awesome version of 'Hush' at their live gigs. The MP3 featured at SAMP3.com is off the Rock Rebel's CD 'Get This', by kind permission of Bobby Louw. ----- CDs ----- WANNA BUY SOME DOPE? http://www.samp3.com/africandope.html Forthcoming new releases from African Dope include: Various Artists - 'Cape Of Good Dope' (CD and Cassette) ADOPECD007 in stores 23 September "...a ripping compilation of upfront hiphop, ragga, weirdhop and breakz, featuring new and exclusive tracks from Constructus, Moodphase5ive, Godessa, Felix Laband, & DJ Dope, and introducing Red Lion, Lions of Zion, Mr Mo, Tykoon Suit, Pug, Joshu and more...." In the late 1980's he also began working with bassist Carlo Mombelli and drummer Kevin Gibson. Mombelli moved to Europe for a number of years but has since returned and it was at his urging that this project came into being. Recorded in only a few hours on the 3rd of September 2001, this project represents the mastery that these three musicians have over their respective instruments and their chosen genre. Carlo is renowned as a master of the modern bass guitar, drawing on the influence of Jaco Pastorius, but fusing it with his unique love for Africa. Kevin Gibson is a drummer of great repute, having worked with many great musicians, here and abroad. But the leadership is Johnny's, fusing influences from the past present and future, he draws on the musical heritage of jazz, jazz from the world over, Europe, America, South America and, most importantly, South Africa. This recording is no political statement, but a reflection of what jazz really is, three great minds, meeting, interacting, and drawing the listener in to a world full of newness, oldness, but most off all pure music for its own sake. He specialises in indigenous instruments like the Kora (a harp from West Africa), the Mbira (a thumb piano from Zimbabwe), the Didgeridoo (native to the Aboriginal people of Australia), and the Birimbau and the African Mouth Bow - developed by the South American Indians and the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert respectively. Pops was born in South Africa, raised in Benoni, and initiated into the worlds of both traditional music and jazz music, by his visits to Dorkay House. There, from a young age he was exposed to legends like Kippie Moeketsi and Abdullah Ibrahim. At the age of 14 he formed his first group 'The Valiants', playing Kwela, Soul, Pop and Latin music. His next band, `Children's Society`, gained Pops his first Townships hit with 'I'm a Married Man'. He then teamed up with Abdullah Ibrahim's saxophonist, Bazil 'Mannenberg' Coetzee and Sakhile's bassist, Sipho Gumede, landing a record contract which resulted in four distinct albums: 'Black Disco', 'Movement in the City', 'BM Movement' and 'Inner City Funk'. His 'Kalamazoo' and 'Sophiatown' albums, released in 1991 and 1992 were both nominated for 'Best Jazz Album' in South Africa's OKTV Awards. Pops is also a record producer, who has travelled widely recording ancient music and producing what is now being labelled as 'World Music'. Pops produced the late Moses Molelekwa's double award winning album 'Finding Ones Self', which won both the 'Best Contemporary Jazz Album' and 'Best Traditional Jazz Album' in the 1996 FNB music awards. Recently Pops toured Switzerland with Andreas Vollenweider's band featuring Max Lasser and Busi Mhlongo. As a result of his travels, he is constantly developing new approaches to music and strives to preserve ancient musical instruments as well as ancient performance techniques. Pops, along with Kalamazoo partner, Sipho Gumede, was nominated for 'Best South African Traditional Jazz Album' at this year's SAMA Awards for their album 'Kalamazoo 3'. On Pops' latest release, 'Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow', he takes a fresh look at some of his songs from his past and present, re-recording them all to create a kind of 'Best Of' collection, but with all the songs in new versions. There's 'Gauteng Vibes' off his classic 'Ancestral Healing' album as well as 'Cup o' Jo'burg' off that album, here retitled, 'I'm Going Back'. There's also 'Kalamazoo', 'Spirit', and the two-part 'The Journey'. The music on 'Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow' combines the rich cultural traditions of the continent, with the technological breakthroughs of the 21st century, as only Pops can. Buy Pops CDs at: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&searchfor=pops mohamed ---------------- THE AWAKENING - 'Roadside Heretics' and 'Sacrificial Etchings' Undoubtedly South Africa's most successful Gothic Rock act and one of the top bands in the far broader Alternative scene, The Awakening have a new album, due out in October 2002 (South Africa only). Ashton Nyte, The Awakening's vocalist, songwriter, sole studio musician and producer, announced that the title of the new album will be 'Roadside Heretics', a reference to the album's primary theme of empathy for the rejected and excluded. Musically, the album incorporates styles that up until now have not featured much in The Awakening's work. Strong classical influences rub shoulders with harmonized vocal layering on the more epic tracks, while uplifting and extreme rock forms, with the occasional nod to electro and industro-pop form the core of the album. Authentic melancholy and cathartic tragedy share the thematic stage with subversive sprituality and poetic Romance to make this an album that will please both the established Goth audience and the braver of Alternative Rock fans all over the world. In addition, while the brand new album is being released in South Africa, The Awakening will be releasing a greatest hits, 'Sacrificial Etchings', in Europe (Europe and South Africa will enjoy reversed exclusive releases of 'Roadside Heretics' and 'Sacrificial Etchings' in October this year and 2003). It is interesting to note that drummer Ian Paice is now the only original member still in the band. For links to the World of Deep Purple please visit: The Deep Purple Web Index at http://www.cd.co.za/deeppurple "The Deep Purple Web Index is the best place to start looking for all things Purple on the World Wide Web" - Record Collector Magazine, March 2000 ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ---------------- DEEP PURPLE Part 1 of 10 One particular group, listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest rock band, managed to sell 15 million albums by 1974. Known as Deep Purple and headed by the falsetto-gifted Ian Gillan, Deep Purple (Mark II) managed to capture the English market with a very large and dedicated loyalty. Ian Gillan's finest performance could be heard on the concept album 'Jesus Christ Superstar' by Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice. Thanks to the dominating guitar of Ritchie Blackmore, Deep Purple were regarded by rock peers and critics as the eye of the storm when it came to hard driving power combination. By 1975 personal problems resulted in various changes in the line-up and, although Deep Purple proceeded to perform at various live concerts, up to this present day the former glory of Blackmore's tenacity would never be repeated. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music SARON GAS - 'FRAGILE' and SEETHER - 'DISCLAIMER' http://www.cd.co.za/legends/2000plus/saron_gas.html I did a free demographic study for Windup, Seether's US label. I played 'Gasoline' for some fifteen-year-old males, from the SA CD 'Fragile', Seether née Saron Gas. All I told the guys was, "This is a new band, do you think they have a chance to make it in America?" The guys responded enthusiastically as the song seized their attention quickly and positively. 'Gasoline', certainly storms in demanding to be heard. Then I told them the band's name, Seether. Some knew 'Fine Again', the radio release, and one recalled seeing them on MTV. 'Disclaimer' is getting the big push here. Wal-Mart, the nation's largest discount department store, stocks the edited version, Seether is touring with OzzFest (which cachet gives them instant credibility to an American teenaged male), and 'Rolling Stone' reviewed 'Disclaimer'. Both CDs are rock of the PLAY LOUD variety (like I need to be told to play it loud?). But how does the CD 'Disclaimer' by Seether compare to 'Fragile' (a Digest #2 in December 2000) by Saron Gas?' First of all, eight songs made it from 'Fragile' to 'Disclaimer': 'Gasoline', '69 Tea', 'Fine Again', 'Driven Under', 'Pride', 'Your Bore', 'Fade Away', and 'Pig'. Second, with a minute diminution of rawness, 'Disclaimer' shows the gleam of additional polish in extra flair and flourishes of drums and guitars. The original SA recording moves a bit more urgently, or hungrily. Windup probably thinks it improved the trio, but I suspect any changes between the two albums only show a natural growth and improvement in the trio. Aimed at a younger audience, Seether's music has a fair amount of angry teen screaming (as on 'Your Bore'). But the hard rock moments of fierce fuzz guitar, deep bass, pounding drums, and Shaun's strong, yet melodic singing keep me coming back. Though this CD has an explicit language sticker, there are really only a few naughty words. They fit the mood of the songs, and are, if you will, artistically justified. 'Disclaimer' and 'Fragile' are both aggressive rock, and I enjoy them though having more years enjoying rock than the typical Seether fan. I may be a high mileage model, but I still run good and recognize plenty of modern rock power. While slamming through 'Pride', I felt a bit of the old-time sense of rock wonder at the powerful music of my people. Saron Gas & Seether http://www.cd.co.za/legends/2000plus/saron_gas.html Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music WAITING FOR THE DAWN - BIG SKY http://www.stevelouw.com There's an old joke about the guy who sat up all night wandering where the sun went, until it finally dawned on him. 'Waiting for the Dawn' is a phrase often used to talk about the hope for a new and better era and the title track on Big Sky's 1990 debut album talks exactly of this in relation to the slow decline of Apartheid and the historic 1994 elections. Big Sky, for those of you who don't know is the brainchild ex-All Night Radio man Steve Louw, and the band played alongside Rodriguez during his 1998 tour of South Africa. Like All Night Radio, Big Sky's lyrics are concerned with 'working man' issues like beer bottle inspired love, being out on the town till the early hours and even the sleazier side of life. The latter is most evident in the cover version of Tom Wait's 'Downtown' with its references to drugs, sleazy sex and booze. Interestingly, my copy of this album is an ex-SABC copy and while it has a little sticker saying 'Avoid' by 'Downtown', it gives a XXX rating to the title track which I believe means this is the best track off the album to play. Along with the title track there is the politically charged 'Power in the Darkness' (a cover of the Tom Robinson song) which contains lines like 'Freedom for black and white'. It's quite interesting to note the shift in the SABC's censorship as the new decade dawned. Sex was still banned, but politics was slowly being allowed to be heard. Musically this is tuneful rock. There are Springsteen-esque moments particularly on 'Shine On' as well as Dire Straits-y guitars on the gentle and beautiful piano led 'Slow Dancing'. The Scottish blood in me is stirred by the bagpipes that lend body to the quite magnificent title track while there's ample opportunity to hone your air guitar skills, and those of you who like to play the air harmonica, try and keep up with the band on 'Blood Money'. So you can stay up all night wondering where the sun goes, listening to All Night Radio or as an alternative you can choose to wait for the dawn with this highly polished quality rock album. And keep your eyes (and ears) open for Big Sky's new album being released in September. She sat there on the elevated stage, inches away from the youngish party crowd only armed with her guitar and some attitude. Unplugged it was for sure giving a 'close-up and personal' testament through tune and just to put some clothes on her body, she borrowed a Scandanavian guitar player who's ability to randomly churn bass, rhythm and some soulful licks out of his six-string, gave her the adequate backing to colour and play with her powerful and so distinctive voice. Summer radiant in the air, but she stayed so cool chirping the audience in good fashion, bringing her sister on the stage for a song and just letting her hair down! Although its six years down the line and actually one of the last pre 2000 rock acts from South Africa to still live the dream, she seemed so vibrant and energetic that its hard to believe thats its the same girl who walked with thunder in her eyes most of the time. Karma is back and that means Henry Ate are back big time - yes, new plans already drawn up to try and conquer the unknown elusive international market (see Interview below). Musically, technically and soundwise nearly flawless, but it seemed that the crowd sometimes were looking for something more faster and dancable. Some new songs requested were never before played live in SA and singing the chorus back to her, showed the huge following she still enjoys. The full band are back in October, from where they would depart to the States to go and 'dream it up again'! Its a good time to be into Henry Ate again. INTERVIEW Sitting opposite Karma-Ann Swanepoel (lead singer/song writer of Henry Ate) in a smoky pub in Putney, London some news about Henry Ate's new venture were reveiled: They are packing their bags for Miami and a shot at making it big in the land of opportunity. "We're off to Miami not only for holiday but for some gigs too! I mentioned it to the band that I have this new vision and.. and they took it. So we're off to the States!" Julian Sun who features on all the recordings thus far, starter member of the band and guitar player will not be going along. "Jules just feels that he is not ready to come with... he still plays gigs with us, but at the moment it's just not for him. So we are ready to sleep on someone else's floor, maybe not even making money and getting anywhere, but Henry Ate are playing good music at the time and why not give it a shot in the States!" Karma looking happy and excited stated that after reaching the ceiling in the South African music industry and nothing evolving in the past three years, its the natural thing to do. She is still bitter about the whole Primedia incident but ready to leave it behind and move on to a new record company and adventure. "We had it very lucky cause just after playing a few gigs, two songs were raked up by 5Fm and topped their charts making us household names over night. SA has been very very good for us and we live quite nice lives but all the new exciting bands emerging are finding it so hard to get backing from their labels and the industry, and no record company are going to help you go all the way abroad. Its just another ball game together." Moving on to a lighter note I asked her a couple of questions to reveal more of the woman concealed for all her fans throughout the years. What do you have in your pockets right now? "Twenty pounds, cell phone, plectrum and a pack of ciggies.. oh and a tube ticket." Whats your idea of hell? "I am a very spiritual person so I believe heaven is all about the joy and happiness that there could be offered and then hell must just mean, personally to me, a place where the opposite reigns." Best rumours about yourself that you've heard so far? "Well.. the ones I would just clearly like to disappear are the ones linking me to fellow musos in the country. No, there was no relationship with a lead singer of one of the biggest SA rock bands, ever and I didn't have a child with him. I don't have children yet, me and Jules (Julian Sun) are just mates.."
