Read a review under the 'New Releases - Re-issues' section below. --------------- ARNO SHOWS OFF HIS NEW PORN Arno Carstens, lead singer with the now defunct Springbok Nude Girls, is back with his new band called New Porn. The Nude Girls, arguably South Africa's most popular rock band ever, broke up on September 11 last year after a series of final gigs in SA and London. Since then, guitarist Theo Crous has already re-emerged alongside Francois Blom as the mighty Kobus! Carstens, however, has been laying low, apart from making the odd magazine cover and gossip column appearance (mostly storms in a d-cup). But the blond vocalist stepped back into the SA rock spotlight last week, when he introduced New Porn with a storming launch gig at the Hidden Cellar in Stellenbosch. The other New Porn band members are Albert Frost (lead guitar), Hanro van Wyk (drums), and Woody Swart (bass). Sales of the band's recent 'Odd Times' album have been brisk following the popularity of the 'Extra Larry' single on SA radio and here on the Digest MP3 charts. The band's current popularity has no doubt been helped by their recent dynamic live performances in the UK, at the Grahamstown Festival, and at the Billabong Pro Surf competition in Jeffrey's Bay a week ago. Jason Rosenstein, the band's drummer, is confident the SA tour will attract a lot of interest as the band's profile has never been higher. This Billabong Pro Surf international event was closely followed in Australia and other countries, so the Sons Of Trout gig was beamed to millions of watching fans. A full list of dates for the Sons Of Trout SA tour are below in the 'Rock On' section. 'Odd Times' is available online at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Listen to 'Extra Larry' at http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 info on Sons Of Trout at: http://www.cd.co.za/legends/90s/sonsoftrout.html --------------- VUSI VISITS JERUSALEM Vusi Mahlasela made his debut appearance in Jerusalem recently. The SA singer-songwriter was accompanied by Proud People's Band, his backing outfit, and they all performed to great acclaim at 'The Jerusalem Festival - Songs Of Freedom' event that took place in the historic Tombs Of The Kings venue in Jerusalem. The festival was sponsored by the French consulate, and drew together acts from Cuba, India, America, Chile and Palestine. Vusi and his band - who will also be releasing their album 'Jungle of Questions', next returned home from the Middle East to perform in 'African Nights Live'. This show at the Spoornet State Theatre sponsored by MmiNO (a SA/Norwegian agency developing music education), the National Arts Council, and Vusi's own Mahlasela Music Development Foundation. __________________________________________ 2.CHARTS ----------- SA ROCK DIGEST TOP 20 SOUTH AFRICAN MP3s OF THE WEEK http://www.sarockdigest.com/mp3 This week [last week] (highest position) Title - Artist (Album/Label) 1. Jayne Mayne wrote in the Cape Times recently: "Overall, it's a mix of chilled lounge and homeboy house." So if that's what you are into, this is for you. Fans of Tangerine Dream, Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre will probably find a lot to enjoy here as well. Favourites: 'Space Invaders', 'Dot Co Dot Za' and all 3 versions of 'Le Mystique Sonar'. More info at: http://www.soundfx.co.za/album.htm -------------- INTERNATIONAL -------------- ÉISHTLINN - ÉIST LINN I'm sure a number of SA music fans remember Alison Williams (aka O'Donnell) from the Irish band Mellow Candle and South African band Flibbertigibbet. Folkroots magazine refer to her as "one of the most unique yet underrated voices in Irish contemporary music". Alison (known as "Assie" to her friends and fans) also performed and recorded in SA with artists like Des and Dawn, Roger Lucey and Plastik Mak. Ever wondered what happened to her? Well, she currently lives in Belgium and has joined a band of musicians who call themselves Éishtlinn, meaning "listen to us" in Gaelic. They have recently released their debut album 'Éist Linn' on the UK label Kissing Spell Records. Éishtlinn play traditional and contemporary music in an Irish style, blending their own songs and tunes with traditional music not only from Ireland but also from other European countries. Fans of bands like Steeleye Span, and more recently Blackmore's Night, will enjoy this diverse collection of World, Celtic, Folk and Bluegrass sounds. Their name says it all... give them a listen. More info at: http://www.folk.be/eishtlinn ----------- RE-ISSUES ----------- RODRIGUEZ - COLD FACT (PT MUSIC) by Brian Currin The recent re-issue of the timeless classic 'Cold Fact' by Rodriguez is a dream-come-true for me. Let me explain; I first heard this album in the early 70s and it crept into my heart and soul and is still one of my top 10 albums of all-time. This album has been a friend through many ups and downs in my life and I always felt that "at least Rodriguez understands". However, the various mistakes regarding the track listing, missing lyrics, track times and the lack of info about the recording and release dates and the musicians involved, always irritated me. The South African and Australian CD re-issues in the 90s never bothered to rectify these errors and omissions. With this 2002 re-issue I was asked for my input, and Terry Fairweather from PT Music and Bill Robb from Robb Graphics allowed me the freedom to fix all the mistakes, as well as including one of my personal concert photographs from the 2001 tour. 'Cold Fact' album producer, Mike Theodore, provided some valuable info, as did Gary Harvey, co-composer of 2 songs on the album. Nils van der Linden let us use a shortened version of the biography he wrote for the special Rodriguez 60th birthday edition of the Digest. And Rodriguez, the original Sugarman, supplied a quote or 2 and a signature. Mint copies of 'Cold Fact' vinyl are selling on the collectors market for between £50 and £100! But if you can't afford that, then buy this CD for only R90 (less than $10) at One World. And even if you already own a copy, buy it again, because this is the proper Rodriguez-endorsed and updated re-issue. Buy Cold Fact at: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&ID=CDADTA7000 And 'After The Fact' is coming soon. Visit the official http://www.sugarman.org website for the most comprehensive information resource on Rodriguez on (and even off) the Net. ---------- ONE WORLD ---------- Buy South African CDs at One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 JULY RELEASES AT ONE WORLD - NEW COURIER OPTION! CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER BUDDY MILES (Locomotive Power) Part 3 of 3 During the fall of 1968, Buddy toured and recorded with the Jimi Hendrix Experience in Los Angeles. In February 1969, Hendrix was recruited by Buddy Miles to produce his second album with the Express. Buddy's group was known as one of the hardest working live acts on the scene and would regularly open for groups such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Miles also holds the record for the most performances at the Fillmore East and West. Out of the Hendrix friendship came the Black Panther ensemble called Band of Gypsies. According to Buddy, it had nothing to do with race or politics, but simply the desires of Jimi and Buddy to jam together Jam they did,as few would forget the electric fuselage of machine gun on the album 'Band Of Gypsies Live'. Buddy's eclectic repertoire included sessions on John McLaughlin's album, Devotion', the seminal Jimi Hendrix album 'Electric Ladyland', and the Muddy Waters blues release, 'Fathers and Sons'. He is also well-remembered for recording two albums for Carlos Santana - his live album, and a 1987 release called 'Freedom. During the Express years Miles achieved reasonable success with a single called 'Them Changes' off his self titled album. The song described the break-up of the Band of Gypsies, and ironically managed to enter and remain on the Billboard charts for an impressive 74 weeks. Much of the Buddy Miles repertoire reflects brassy renditions by musicians that Buddy admired. This included a 14-minute interpretation of 'Down By The River' by Neil Young, respectable renditions of 'Midnight Rider'/'Dreams'/'Don't Keep Me Wondering' by Greg Allman, and a power-based interpretation of 'Wholesale Love' by Otis Redding. In the following years, Buddy spent a short time in the penitentiary and then powered back into the arena with the Hendrix tribute 'I Don't Live Today', alongside Paul Rodgers, Slash and Billy Cox. He goes out as loud and proud, black and bold, with a discography of embryonic rock and soul fusion. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music BLACKMILK - 'THE SUMMER EYE' I don't think I can review this complicated rock CD by the sons of Lithium. I mean, I enjoy 'The Summer Eye', over and over I enjoy it, and it most definitely is rock, often heavy rock. How to describe rock songs containing a multitude of riffs and a variety of sonic pleasures otherwise uncategorizable? This is, is not, prog rock. So what sort of rock is this? Maybe Blackmilk is the next step in rock's evolution, so I lack terms to adequately describe it because some description relies on comparison? Hmm, perhaps it is too modern, too avant garde, for some. But every fan of fuzzy electric guitar, strong percussion (which means a drummer who is a musician, right?), and a nice bottom bass, will recognize this as pure rock. Even if it is different. I could say it is thinking rock music, progressive without any keyboard noodling. Right, just a rock quartet working within the guitar, drums, and synthesizer form, with a Skilsaw. Not Dick Clark fare. In fact, when they slide into conventional rock rhythms it is almost surprising. There is some Springbok Nude Girls-type rock variety here, such as on 'Goodbye Satellite', but they don't sound like SNG. But just because Blackmilk doesn't sound like Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man' or Robert Johnson/Cream/Jack Hammer's 'Crossroads' doesn't mean this is not solid rock. So how to describe 'The Summer Eye'? Well, if it were jazz-rock, I'd be less inclined to listen to it. I prefer music that has not been emasculated, and 'The Summer Eye' definitely has cojones. Like the title track and the controlled wild rock frenzy of the CD closer, 'Exotic Matter'. Some may think Blackmilk sounds like Pink floyd, but I don't hear it -- different style of guitar for one thing. I hear a polished, artistic, and new sound. Well, since I can't review 'The Summer Eye', I guess I'll just listen to it again. (With thanks to Dave Chislett). Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music ELLAMENTAL - UNCOMPLICATED DREAMS One of the first concerts I ever went to was the Free People's Concert at Wits University. It was during the turmoil of the 80's and at a time when South Africa was producing some excellent music. One of the acts on the bill was EllaMental who were just rising to fame with the singles 'See Youself (Clowns)' and 'Pressure' getting some good airplay (the former managing to reach number 16 on the Radio 5 charts). One of my abiding memories of the concert was standing near the stage being concerned at offending Heather Mac as I was standing with my fingers in my ears (that and my friend's girlfriend favourably comparing my rear end with Bruce Springsteen's. Butt I digress). The reason I was blocking my ears was not that I disliked the music, but I hadn't realised how loud it would be. EllaMental's debut album 'Uncomplicated Dreams' contained the aforementioned singles and five other tracks. The dreams may have been uncomplicated, but the music is sophisticated rock. Heather Mac's mature and commanding vocals immediately set the tone on the opener 'See Yourself (Clowns)' and maintain it throughout the album. These strong vocals and the guitar playing of one of South African's leading axemen, Tim Parr, meant that this album was bound to be something special. Apart from the wonderful pop rock of 'See Youself' and the edgy 'Pressure', the album has touches of Anglo-African sounds, particularly evident in the éVoid-y guitar on 'Dancing (in the Moonlight)', a great rockabilly track in 'Wet Washing' and closes with the punky 'Monsters' (which was the B-Side of the 'See Yourself' single). The big question that surrounds this album for me is the meaning of the song 'Magic Mother' with the lyric 'Magic Mother cast spell on us/teach us to dance away all of our fears". Is the mother referred to Mama Africa, or is Magic Mother used here a code for Magic Mushroom? You never know with these rock musician types. I can't recall ever hearing this tune on the radio, so I guess the SABC protected us from this highly subversive song. After the success of this album, EllaMental recorded the single '30 Million Lonely People' which had limited success. They then headed over to the States possibly more as self-imposed exiles rather than seeking fame and fortune. There they recorded the less impressive 'EllaMental' an album that grew out of the cracks in the pavement of New York and lacked the passion of 'Uncomplicated Dreams' which was firmly rooted in the fertile soil of 80's South Africa. Jessica's attempt at gold faltered as she slipped from 2 to 3 with Vicky Leandros seeing off the advances of Dr Hook. The Doctor meanwhile was content with a 6th week at number 1 in 1982. 1977 saw country singer Kenny Rogers charting with one of his classics 'Lucille' which included one of my favourite misheard lyrics: 'You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille/ With four hundred children and a crop in the field'. Also new to the top 5 that year was another country tune 'Crossfire' by the Bellamy Brothers (Howard and David Bellamy). But it was disco that ruled in that week as 5000 Volts shocked the nation with 'Walking on a Love Cloud'. In 1987 Canadian Gino Vanelli was riding high on the charts with 'Wild Horses'. Info: 011-646-6467 ----------------- BLACK ROSE'S ROCKING REUNION The long-awaited Black Rose reunion will take place at the Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory on Friday 9th August. Be sure to get there as this is probably a once-off and a rare happening, Black Rose, who were a very successful young SA rock band about seven years ago, began gigging at an average age of 11!. In their three-year career, the band supported some of the cream of SA Rock, including Squeal, Sugardrive, Lithium, Springbok Nude Girls, and the Dolly Rockers. Black Rose released a demo tape and CD, and were played on 5fm, Vaal Radio and SAFM. Although playing mainly rock, one of their punk songs was included on an International Punk compilation tape. They were regional finalists in the Shell Road to Fame in 1996 and semi-finalists in the Willards MDP in the same year. Due to various other commitments the band split in 1998. When they recently got together for a jam, they realised that the magic was still there - just better and more polished - that knowledge plus the constant nagging of ever faithful fans gave birth to the reunion idea. The band is Jason Guile (lead singer/guitar), Sebastian Guile (drums), and Ryan Matthews (bass). The band's original rhythm guitarist, Tim Smith, is unavailable and is replaced by Jonathan Mellor. This ticket allows you to camp at Fountains Valley from the 30th August, right through the PREMIX festival until the end of the main show, PLUNGE on the 8th September (10 days). On Thursday 5th September there will be a special "warm-up" evening at Fountains, featuring Koos Kombuis (his only set at the festival), An Pierlè (Belgium) and other OppiKoppi favourites. Only weekend ticket holders have access to this special event. The radio interviews and magazine adverts are rolling, with promotional gigs coming up at venues around the country over the ensuing weeks. Punters stand the chance of winning festival tickets and T-shirts at the promotions as well as on radio and in magazine competitions. This list will be available early next week. Premix Festival Update As you probably know by now OppiKoppi has an exciting new addition to the festival this year. This would be Premix, the first official OppiKoppi Fringe Festival in Pretoria from 30 August until 5 September. Premix will be held on two free stages, one on Hatfield Square, and one in Arcadia on the lawns at the Pretoria Art Museum, as well as in scores of venues all around Pretoria. For the free stages we have invited a number of promoters to host various themed days. There will be jazz days hosted by the Gauteng North Jazz Council, a traditional day hosted by the Midi Trust and the national final of the RP Studios and Emerging Sounds Band Competition. Stuku Tuks will host a kwaito evening; the Pretoria Technicon Music School will showcase the talent of their students and lecturers alike. There will be a Punk day, a Deep House day, a Reggae Day, a 206 day and a Rock day- the list goes on. In addition to this, twenty-one venues will also be hosting live music and entertainment during the week of Premix. In total more than 260 sets of live, original music and performances will take place. The list of artists confirmed for Premix is huge and diverse, including Anton Goosen, Not My Dog, De Heideroosjes (Holland), Millionaire (Belgium), Beeskraal, The Zef Sketse, Shana, Tidal Waves, Johnny Fourie, Karen Zoid, Syd Kitchen and Madala Kunene and the Sanscapes Project, etc. The general idea behind Premix is to have something along the lines of KKNK and the Grahamstown Arts Festival in Pretoria in a few years' time, but with the focus on Music. The feedback we've received after initiating the project has been overwhelmingly positive and goes to show that the time is right for something of this nature.
