More info at: http://www.thewho.net --------------------- MADIBA MUSIC DVD RELEASES FIRST TWO SA MUSIC COMPILATIONS Madiba Music DVD has just released the first two South African music compilations to appear on the DVD format. These two inaugural titles on the Madiba Music DVD catalogue are 'Madiba World', a collection of SA's finest world music artists, and 'Madiba Jazz', which highlights a selection of SA's jazz giants. Artists appearing on these inaugural compilations include Bongo Maffin, Tananas, Hugh Masekela, Sibongile Khumalo, Moodphase 5ive, Moses Taiwa Molelekwa, Kalahari Surfers, and Yvonne Chaka Chaka. Madiba Music DVD is a new South African initiative by the Digital Content Company (Pty) Ltd (DCC) in conjunction with the Madiba Music label. DCC successfully launched Africa's first DVD film catalogue in November 2001 with six classic titles - 'Mapantsula', 'Jump The Gun', 'The Native Who Caused All The Trouble', 'Yizo Yizo', 'Shaka Zulu', and 'Chickin Biznis'. These titles, which are already selling well in stores across South Africa, have also stimulated immense interest in African content in a number of territories worldwide. Kerry Friedman, owner of the Madiba Music label, explained the motivation behind these two pioneering releases: "The interest in African music world wide is huge and increasing daily" says Friedman, "What was once considered "underground", has now entered into the mainstream market over the past couple of years." Globally, DVD is increasingly consolidating its position as a home entertainment product. European sales of DVDs have shown a huge rise in 2001. The International Recording Media Association projects that 1.32 billion DVD discs will be distributed world-wide during 2002. DCC is a producer as well as a distributor, offering a turnkey solution to DVD production. All parts of the process (bar the Glass Master) are conducted in South Africa, and are in line with world standards. The development of a high-tech industry and digital delivery platform that can service Africa's needs is a priority for DCC. With these releases, Madiba Music DVD becomes the first African music label to operate exclusively in the DVD arena. The highest quality music content, coupled with slick authoring and full surround sound will create products that give African music the vehicle and context that lower the barrier to entry into local and international markets. BUT I GOT HEINZ' 'Once In A Lifetime', the BMG-released debut CD single by Heinz Winckler, the recently crowned 24-year-old 'Idols' winner, has achieved Platinum plus status*, making it an instant smash hit, with over 30 000 copies having already been delivered to music stores across South Africa. With the radio-friendly track receiving saturation airplay across a number of stations, all indications are that Heinz, who scooped a major record contract with BMG Records Africa as part of his prize, will emulate the staggering local sales figures for releases by the UK 'Pop Idol' Will Young, and that show's runner-up, Gareth Gates. 'Once In A Lifetime' was written by the Norwegian pop songsmith, David Erikson (S Club 7 and Hear'say), and recorded and produced in Johannesburg by top SA pop/rock producer Brian O'Shea. Also included on the single is Heinz's popular version of the Westlife tune 'Soledad' (which featured on their Platinum album 'World Of Our Own'). Also in the pipeline for July is 'Idols: The Album', which will feature Heinz and all the finalists performing the songs off the show. M-Net will be screening a one-hour 'Heinz Winckler' special feature on Sunday 7 July, starting at 18h00. * In the South African music market, Gold sales status for a single is 10 000 plus units, with Platinum being awarded for over 25 000 units sold. ----------------- KOPPI-CUTS Sporting a wealth of talent, the SA film industry is producing some specialised and fine material, covering a multitude of topics, contemporary issues and concepts. Unfortunately, the majority of these works are rarely seen by the general public, and it was this concern that led to the birth of OppiKoppi's 'Koppi-Cuts', a film festival dedicated to showcasing these young creative talents currently specialising in the fields of documentaries, films and music videos. As Oppikoppi broadens the depths of its content, spreading its reaches to other artistic media in South Africa, it has become a formative canvas (sic) upon which various dynamics, like film, can be displayed. With this, the growing interest in visual-tech media can be catered for, whilst stimulating the burgeoning world-wide call for South Africa's unique blend of homegrown projects. This festival of film piggy-backs onto Oppikoppi's 'Premix' festival from 30 August - 5 September. The choice pieces will be screened at the 'Plunge' main festival (5, 6, 7, 8 September) at Fountains Valley, Pretoria. Material will be selected from the following categories: 1. Short films (Under 30 min) - 2. Documentaries - 3. Features - 4. Music videos - 5. Flash design - 6. Animation - 7. Advertisements OppiKoppi are on the search for original and diverse material, visually tantalising images and rich, robust ideas. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- -------------- NEW RELEASES -------------- VAN DER WANT / LETCHER - 'BIGNITY' 'Bignity' is a welcome return for the popular SA duo, Matthew van der Want and Chris Letcher, after the success of their previous album, 'Low Riding', which received a SAMA nomination in 1999 and was voted by the Mail & Guardian as one of the best albums of that year. The duo have been on a longish sabbatical but are now back with an album that is already getting many murmurs of approval. The first single off the album, 'Saving the Scenes', introduces us to a "happier" Van der Want/Letcher, who are known for their more "serious" music. Also on the album is 'One Time', a track that brought Matthew van der Want back on to the music scene when it reached No. 6 on the 5fm Top 40 charts. The track was originally recorded for 'Bignity', but Van der Want's solo album, 'Play My Way', was released a year earlier, and a remixed version of 'One Time' appeared on that. 'Bignity' features some of South Africa's best musicians such as Robin Auld (who appears on 'Lenscap'), Ian Herman and Kevin Gibson. Van der Want/Letcher will be embarking on a national tour from the end of August until the end of September and will be playing at local clubs (Bassline, Up The Creek, Mystic Boer, etc.) and festivals such as WOMAD, Oppikoppi and Woodstock. Tracklisting 'Deadends'; 'Pianist'; 'Saving the Scenes'; 'Badmouthing'; 'Fugue'; 'Easy'; 'Lenscap'; 'One Time'; 'Turning Tables'; 'Low Riding'; 'Roses'; 'Misheen'; 'Blue Eyes'. ------------------ MAMA DANCE! RECORDS NEWS Mama Dance! Records in Observatory, Cape Town have had a great run recently. Jerusha, one of their signed artists, is currently number 43 on the UK Club Charts with a remix of her Pop/R&B smash, 'Are You The One' (see Music Week UK). The track is also due for release in various other territories with major labels beginning to show interest, and negotiations are underway for the SA release. KB, the new 'Backstage' soapie queen, singing sensation, dancer, feature film actress, and now a Mama Dance! artist, will release her debut CD, 'Beautiful Vibrations', through Universal in July 2002. The Carla Dimondes track 'Time To Fight' stayed at number one on GHFM for four weeks, and was voted number 4 on the top 100 of 2002 on the station. It will be included on an anti-woman abuse single called 'Every Six Days...' that will be extensively sampled to national radio in the next two months. Mama Dance! Records are also in negotiations with overseas labels for the release of 'Love Grows', a powerful R&B/two step international pop single that has been grabbing everyone's ears. Carla Dimondes' debut EP is almost complete. Listen out for 'Every Six Days...' a very powerful single about woman abuse featuring KB, Carla Dimonde, Miriam Gondwe, and Diggy Bongz. It has already received extensive airplay on GHFM. Release date July 2002. Dantai's second album is due out through Gallo in the next few months and it could surpass the success of the hit single 'Pyjama Jam', off their debut album, 'Operation Lahlela'. A track from the album has already been licenced to a UK compilation album called 'The Shrine', with tracks by Fela Kuti, Cesaria Evoria and others. Also, 'You Touch Me Horny' by Dawnay and 'Fabulous Day' by ReddAngel, which were both originally recorded at Mama Dance! Recording Studios, both charted at number 1 on various radio stations. Other studio projects worked on recently were tracks from TKZee's last album, Loyiso's upcoming album, remixes for Afrikan Meltdown records due for international release in September. Keep Mama Dance! Recording Studios in mind for album/single/remix production and don't hesitate to contact them for more info on the artists and releases. Contact: Craig McGahey - Mama Dance! CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ------------------------------- CHRIS FARLOWE (Thunder Heart) ------------------------------- Part 3 of 3 A worthy exploration should be made of the album 'Extremely Live', performed at the Birmingham Town Hall 1989. Backing musicians included Zoot Money (keyboards), Spencer Davis (guitar), Miller Anderson (guitar and vocals), Colin Hodgkinson (bass guitar), and Pete York (drums). Powerful arrangements of Dylan's 'Watching The River Flow', and the BB King standard 'The Thrill Is Gone', clearly prove that the old soldier had matured with time and providence. During the Eighties he worked with Jimmy Page on the soundtrack 'Death Wish II', and, thanks to Mike Vernon, released an excellent blues album called 'Out Of The Blue'. The Generation X got to know Chris when a multi platinum album called 'Outrider' smashed into the charts in 1988 featuring Jimmy Page and John Miles. In 1996 he went back on the road with a re-formed Colosseum and was definitely sounding better than ever before. These days Chris has left the ballads and embraced the blues, and somewhere between his personal collection of antiques and WW2 Nazi memorabilia you may find him skulking in the shadows of a late night club. But be patient because you can be guaranteed that the "Stormy Monday" will rise again and quake as it bellows forth like it did for the last forty years. Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music BATTERY 9 - 'STROP' (1996, One F Music/Tic Tic Bang, BANGCD022) http://www.cd.co.za/legends/90s/battery9_index.html 'Strop' is mostly aggressive, high-energy, and if Paul Riekert and company slow it down for a few songs, well, it's still aggressive. Hearing that Battery 9 are releasing a new album on July 1, I pulled out my Battery 9 CDs to recharge my own batteries with the power of Paul Riekert and B9. After the attention grabbing opener 'Kiss the Machine', then 'Cross No More Rivers' (a lovely ballad B9 style), and the panicking chain saw sound of 'Scream', the album turns to a threatening sonic landscape with chanted vocals, heavy unstoppable rhythms, and occasional eruptions of power. 'Strop' comes from mysterious factories where the sounds of B9 are born, like the Krell machinery in the film 'Forbidden Planet' that has been running and repairing itself for tens of thousands of years, and whose purpose is unfathomable. But the machinery sounds cool. At times, 'Strop' sounds right out a futuristic film noir world like 'Blade Runner', or some other film based on Philip K. Dick's works. But again, 'Strop' is not depressing, but rather puts the mind in gear, sometimes third, sometimes fifth, and it moves the flesh. Tape loops, machine sounds, guitar, and percussion of hitting various objects, usually big metal things, sound effects, and Paul make up the Battery 9 sound. It's a good one. The ominous vocals all make for varied and stimulating listening. To get fancy in deep jargon, this is a musical form that in lesser hands could turn monotonous, but Riekert's hands work in the B9 factory. The B9 musos present beat-driven and well-decorated songs, and they don't repeat themselves or get boring like listening to a two-cycle engine or a boy band. The CD closes with a brief and driving tune, full of B9 swagger and justified musical arrogance... but stick around for the hidden track. Okay, I'm recharged now, only needing more B9, the new one. Many have tried to merge these earthy rhythms with their own rock music sounds, some even coming from far off lands to have a dose of the infectious beats. The results varied from really good to really embarrassing, but one group who managed to blend these sounds to near perfection was Bright Blue Although the best of Blue was to come on their second album, 'The Rising Tide', their eponymously titled debut was, and still is an essential part of any serious SA music collection. Opening with the deliciously funky jive guitar led 'Who's that Girl' the music is fresh and feel good throughout. Whether it's the jazzy piano intro to 'Window on the World' that melts wondrously into the bouncing body of the song, or the glorious refrain of 'Living in Africa' on the song of that name, the album is full of moments. This album is not nearly as political as later material, but does feature the anti conscription/anti apartheid 'Who is the Enemy' and is probably the most straightforward rock tune on the album. For the most part though the songs are about life and generally feeling good about it. Three tracks from this album were omitted from the 'Every Now and Then' best of CD released last year. Of these 3, only the brooding 'Japanese Samba' can't feel aggrieved as I would regard this as the weakest Bright Blue track. However 'Drop in the Ocean' and 'Anyway Out' would certainly have stood their ground on the CD, especially the former with it's sunny steel drum addition. This album is not available on CD, but as mentioned above, you can hear most of it on the 'Every Now and Then' collection. The Best of CD is highly recommended but you would do well to lay your hands on a copy of 'Bright Blue', as it is in itself a great record. These guys mixed black music with white rock sounds and the result is anything from grey, it's Bright Blue. All 3 of the artists who moved up to number 1 had had previous number 1's. The Hollies had already topped the charts with 'Sorry Suzanne' (1969) and 'He Ain't Heavy' (1969) and John Paul Young had been at the top in 1976 with 'I Hate The Music'. Dr Hook last saw the top spot in 1972, and this gap of almost 10 years made it the second longest gap between number 1 hits, beaten only by Cliff Richard who had a gap of nearly 11 years between 'Devil Woman' in 1976 and 'All I Ask' in 1987. (The 3rd biggest gap was between Elton John's 'Don't Go Breaking My Heart' and 'Nikita' 169 days less than Dr Hook.) The charts were given a world flavour with Greek born Vicky Leandros entering the top 5 in 1972 with 'Come What May' and Argentinian Bebu Silvetti at number 4 in 1977. With Australia's John Paul Young, Holland's Pussycat, and Sweden's Abba in there as well, there were 7 different nations represented in the 20 songs above, but not a single South African entry. The term 'Rock' was given a wide meaning to include pop, folk, etc. The results proved quite interesting, although it was no surprise that Rabbitt topped the poll. I have been trying to find it for about 2 years now and I'm not having any luck. I first heard it on a mix tape I bought in NYC and recently I heard a sample of it (performed by someone else) on a record called 'Bollywood Breaks' which is remixed Bollywood soundtracks. Was 'Temptation' originally written by someone else? I DJ weekly in Germany and really want to spin the Hot R.S. version of 'Temptation'!!! Dan mailto:chill_pil@hotmail.com Hot RS http://www.new.co.za/~currin/hotrs_index.html {'Temptation' was off the 1978 album by Hot R.S. titled 'Forbidden Fruit'. Re-released (with bonus tracks) in 1997 by Gallo as 'Forbidden Fruit and Other Delights'. 'Temptation' was written by Arthur Freed (words) and Nacio Herb Brown (music) in 1933 for the film 'Going Hollywood' and sung by Bing Crosby. It was a million-seller for Perry Como in 1945 and again in 1947 for Jo Stafford - ed} ------------------ SOUND SOLUTIONS http://www.cd.co.za/soundsolutions A Cape Town-based music resource that offers two main areas of expertise and assistance: 1) Music Searches - Assists in recommending and finding relevant music soundtracks for television, cinema and radio commercials and productions. 2) Music Licensing - Assists in obtaining the publishing and recording rights for music to be used as soundtracks for commercials and other productions. AND ZOID AT ROXY'S The last time I went to Roxy's in Mellville was to see The Springbok Nude Girls pack in hundreds of people at their peak. Last Saturday I went to see Karen Zoid with supporting band KOBUS! (which features ex-Nudie guitarist Theo Crous). KOBUS! opened the show with six tracks from their album. While the sound was below par, the band took Joburg by storm. They played 'Wie Is Kobus?', 'Aardskok', 'Jou Oë' and ended off with three amazing tracks - the intense 'Die Swart' which includes Francious Blom (ex-singer of metal band VOD) scream in the middle of the song which sets the hair on end, the eccentric 'Gee Raat' with the hilarious lyrics and high pitched "Chipmunks" chorus ("Gee Raat vir die pyne, gee raat asseblief ou toppie raat vir die kriewelrige Hypothalamus in my brein") and the tour de force 'Hoenderman' . The crowd who were there mainly to see Karen were stunned and the catchphrase of "Wie Is Kobus?" was heard the entire night. Karen went on stage to huge applause and this being the first time that I have seen her live, she really rocked the house. The sound was vastly improved and she played a variety of new and old songs. A highlight for me was an old FAK song she sang 'Vat Jou Goete En Trek' (or something like that). After a solid 50 minute set, I was impressed that Karen came back for more. She opened the second set with a cover of Bruce Springsteen's 'Fire'. Karen proved to be very gracious by calling up Amanda Strydom (who was in the crowd) to come and sing with her. Amanda did a rendition of Janis Joplin's 'Mercedes-Benz' and she surprised me with a very strong voice and gutsy performance. The final Karen track had to be the hit single 'Afrikaansers is Pleisierig' and the track blew me away. The performance was awesome. The band stormed through the track and had the crowd calling out for more. And more was just what we got. Karen called up Theo and Francious from KOBUS! and the band launched into a rip roaring, no-holds-barred, loud, ball-breaking jam. It was a sight to behold Karen and Francious screaming into the mics, with Theo and the band blasting a heavy metal riff. As Francious mentioned "Now Its time for The Power!!". How about some KOBUS! Zoid anyone? A great gig with two awesome SA bands who do things on their own terms. Who says we need TV to find some SA Idols? They are out there gigging every week. On 22 June 1998, I arrived at JFK Airport in New York, never expecting to stay in the USA so long. I also never expected to get to be on the radio all these years, and continue to play our great South African music to listeners across the state of Oregon. Last Saturday (22 June), I started the anniversary celebration on my New World show on KRVM. Listener response was so great, I continued on my Women In Music show on Tuesday 25th, and kept it going on Saturday 29th!! South African music of all genres is really appreciated here! Here’s what my listeners have been hearing: Saturday, 22 June 2002 - New World: Johnny Clegg; Mondetta; Joe Nina; Lucky Dube; African Jazz Pioneers; Hugh Masakela; Abdullah Ibrahim; Sipho Gumede; Louis Mhlanga; Ernie Smith; Vusi Khumalo; Gito Baloi; Tlokwe Sehume; Tony Cox; Mauritz Lotz; Spokes Mashiyane; Kwela Tebza; Devante; Brothers of Peace; Lungiswa; Amampondo (with Juno Reactor). Tuesday, 25 June 2002- Women In Music: Famous Curtain Trick; Mondetta; Egyptian Nursery; Naked; Little Sister; Liesl Graham; Tony Nguxi; Lebo; Bongo Maffin; Lungiswa; Amampondo; Pops Mohamed; Ernie; Ibomvu; Nina Sister; Mango Groove; Busi Mhlongo; Qzoo; Blacklist; Fetish; Suthukosi Arosi; Foot C Foot C. Not only that, but I’ve been filling in on a few daytime shows this week, and have managed to sneak in some good stuff like Big Sky, Lesley Rae Dowling, Springbok Nude Girls (getting quite a following amongst the late night listeners - the dj’s play them often!), our honorary South African Rodriguez, Dog Detachment, and others. Thanks to all those at Gallo, MELT 2000, Fresh, Sheer, Arc Music, Sony, for sending me the best music in the world to play for the people here, as well as those who listen on the Internet. If you want to tune in to probably one of the best public radio stations in America, here’s how: Go to http://www.radiodestiny.com Download the Destiny Media Player. Click on Listen Now. Find KRVM on the list. Enjoy! Don’t forget, I’m on the Pacific time zone, so tune in Saturday mornings Pacific time 10h00 (you can find it on your computer clock), and every second Tuesday (next date 9 July) to hear me. If you do listen at any time to KRVM, send them an e-mail letting them know. We are building a list in the studio that reads: "Wow! Check out who listens to us!" It would be very cool to see South Africa mentioned on that list. Unlike commercial stations, nobody at KRVM gets paid to do this - we’re all volunteers, and we do it because we love the job. Ed, one of the dj's who follows my show on Saturdays, came in last week and said, "I just realised why I love your show so much - the music is so filled with joy, even when they're singing about sad stuff! There's so much emotion and feeling, that American music just doesn't have!" A great compliment to our musicians - keep up the good work!
