The eight-date tour will be working its way up the coast, and then on to Gauteng. The Cape-based singer-songwriter has already released over a dozen top twenty songs in SA, including two number ones. Songs like ‘All The Girls Cried’, ‘Love Kills’, ‘Zen Surfing in the Third World’, ‘All of Woman’, and ‘Heavy Water’ are well known to SA fans and still enjoy regular airplay. The ‘Dream Of Birds’ CD is a limited edition release of the UK album of the same name, now available in record stores through Auld’s own Free Lunch label. In recent years, Auld has divided his time between his home in the Cape and travelling abroad to perform. This will be his first SA tour for some time. Auld recently received a boost with the use of his most familiar song, ‘All of Woman’, on the MNet show ‘Idols’, sparking renewed interest in the ‘Best of Robin Auld Vol.1’ compilation. Auld and his band - Peter Cohen (drums) and Nelson Barbosa (bass) - will be playing a set of electric and acoustic guitar styles, performing many of those tunes familiar to SA audiences as well as showcasing new material. For the latter part of this year Auld will be overseas, following up on some full house performances last year at The C-Note in New York and The Exit Inn in Nashville, so it may be some time before he hits town again! The tour schedule is as follows: May: Thurs 30 - Tsitsikamma Conference Centre, PE (in association with Radio Algoa) Fri 31 - Buff’s Club, East London June: Sat 1 - S’khumba Crafts, Ramsgate Sun 2 - NSA Art Gallery, Durban Fri 7 - Barcelona’s, Pretoria Sat 8 - Johannesburg Civic (in association with Safm) Sun 9 - Saints, Benoni Fri 14 - River Club, Cape Town. Already available in good music shops in the Western Cape and Gauteng, Play Guitar is now also going to be available in shops all the way along the Eastern Cape Coast and into the interior. The programme’s creator, Ian Visser, has embarked on a personal odyssey, heading to East London, Uitenhage, Stutterheim, Grahamstown, King Williamstown and Humansdorp, ferrying stock and demonstrations to spread the word on computer-based guitar training. At around R300, it is still the cheapest, most in-depth guitar-tutoring tool you will ever find. The CD offers over 500 pages of information and interactivity whereby the program can calculate keys and chords for you, features a built-in tuner, comprehensive page links and exercises. The product was in development for almost 2 years before release and includes a chord dictionary of over 1200 chords! It also features 2 400 playable soundtracks so that you can listen and check that you are doing the right thing as you go along. So now, no matter where you are in South Africa, you can pop into a music store and pick up a copy along with your next set of strings. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- MOODPHASE5IVE NEWS Moodphase5ive are the six-piece live afro-funk-soul-hip hop-dub-jazz band, who have graced the stages of the North Sea Jazz Festival and WOMAD mainstage in SA, and already completed two successful tours of the Netherlands and Czech Republic in 2001. Their debut album 'Steady On' was released in December 2000, and has become a cult classic in SA and been reasonably received in Europe. 'Moodphase5ive In Superdeluxe Mode', a collection of remixes from 'Steady On', live recordings and new tracks, will be released in SA in May 2002, and in Europe in June 2002 - just before their European tour. The first single from the album, 'Got To Give', is already charting on most major SA urban stations, and is coupled with an excellent video, already screening on a variety of SA channels. Moodphase5ive's second studio album, currently in production, is scheduled for international release on 21 Sep 2002 - just after their European tour. african dope records http://www.africandope.co.za ------------------ KELVIN DECLINED - KELVIN DECLINED This fiery foursome has been scorching a trail across the rock stages of Cape Town and will be appearing further afield in the next few months. The question with this their 10-track debut album is, does it capture the energy and passion of those live performances? The answer is yes, and more. If you liked them live, then you’ll love this album, and vice versa. Kelvin Declined are Guido Helm on guitar, Justin Tee on drums, Neil Poynton on bass and keyboards, and Mark McCree on vocals and extra guitar. McCree is the focus of the band with his wiry, ginger intensity and bravado. But the band’s skilled and diverse rock attack masks McCree’s vulnerable lyrics that mostly arise from that emotional grey area between the unsatisfactory ending of a relationship and the aloneness of the aftermath - eased considerably by the prestige and promise of being the frontman in a rock band. There’s the rollicking crowd favourite ‘Standing In A Bottle’ with its "standing in a bottle, living in a can, waiting for the phone to ring" singalong chorus, and ‘Drugs Me’ whose alienation and groaning bass resemble the Beatles’ ‘I Want You (She’s So Heavy)’. But don’t be deceived, this eponymous album (is it so hard to find a title??) is a strong and rocking piece of work (take a bow Jürgen von Wechmar at Sunset Recording Studios!). Kicking off with first single ‘42’, whose first line - "We want friends we can undress" - clearly lays out the band’s non-musical ulterior motives. ‘Stan 229’ takes its slow, complaining verses into full-on yelling choruses in a most seductive way, and ‘Funky Chicken’ is a solid rock groove with its ‘70’s "wakka wakka" guitars. So Kelvin Declined have latched on to a winning formula - irresistable radio-friendly rock tunes with a vulnerable but cool-and-tough core, as best illustrated by the wonderful ‘Girls In Black’, which is surely the next hit for this red-hot band. (SS) Available at http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&id=RR022 Kelvin Declined http://www.cd.co.za/legends/2000plus/kelvindeclined.html PS one last question. What is the connection between the similarity of the four human figures on this album’s cover, and those on the covers of Max Normal’s ‘Songs From The Mall’ and Dorp’s ‘Boy/Girl’. Is this a SA rock conspiracy? http://www.cd.co.za/legends/2000plus/albumcovers.html ----------- ONE WORLD ----------- MELTING POT A dispatch from One World http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321 Recent reports indicate that the MELT 2000 offices in the UK have been closed and are no longer in operation, and a possible relocation to SA is also on the cards. One World are hoping that this does not impact on the availability of their excellent catalogue of albums and compilations. As a precautionary measure, One World has stocked up on all their old and new albums, enabling the online store to continue supplying both their SA and international customers, with titles off this excellent catalogue. The following MELT2000 titles are currently available at One World: Moses Taiwa Molelekwa - ‘Wa Mpona’ - This is a new release that features some previously unreleased material and some live recordings from the late great Moses Molelekwa. This is nothing short of genius and certainly way ahead of its time! Other albums available by Moses Molelekwa are ‘Genes And Spirits’ and ‘Finding One's Self’. Amampondo - ‘Vuyani’ - The latest release from this fine and internationally-acclaimed traditional act, celebrating their 20 years of music making. Also from MELT is their ‘Drums For Tomorrow’ album. Pops Mohamed - Melt has three albums from the man behind the Kalamazoo titles: ‘How Far Have We Come?’ - One of the earlier releases, recorded in 1995 in London. ‘Ancestral Healing’ - features the tracks ‘Ancestral Healing’ and ‘Mbira Jive’. ‘Live Meltdown’ - This album features live recording of Pops’ favourites like ‘Migrant Worker’ and ‘Sangoma Blues’. Various - ‘Outernational Meltdown’ (BOX SET) - Contains three various artist albums in a very neat and collectable cardboard box set at the bargain price of R219.99. All these albums have their own booklets with photos and interesting info on the albums, artists and philosophy behind the music. The albums are: ‘Free At Last’ - which features Sipho Gumede and Amampondo. ‘Healers Brew’ - which features Madala Kunene and Sangoma Healers. ‘Jazzin' Universally’ - with Moses Molelekwa and Zim Nqgawana. Robert 'Doc' Mthalane - ‘Respect’ - An album tribute to a man who earned the nickname "The Jimi Hendrix of South Africa"!!! Also largely responsible for much of the music performed by Busi Mhlongo in the mid-90's. The album was recorded in the UK and was 'Doc' Mthalane’s last release before he passed away. Madala - ‘Kon'ko Man’ - Based in Durban, Madala Kunene is widely regarded as the king of maskanda - untouchable Zulu guitar music at its best. Deepak Ram - ‘Flute For Thought’ - Senior disciple of world-renowned Bansuri maestro Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia. Various - ‘Tribal Ethno Dance’ - Tribal and spiritual rhythms and songs by Zulu Sangomas, Kalahari Bushmen, throat singers from the Transkei and traditional songs by Amampondo members. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER ------------ FRANK ZAPPA ------------ Part 2 of 4: In March 1966, Frank Zappa launched his debut double album ‘Freak Out’. This seminal masterpiece captured a variety of instruments and arrangements, which set the stage for a Beatles copycat version, ‘Sgt. Pepper'. Not only did the album list the musical influences, but it also powered into a variety of genres that were largely stimulated by the Watts riots in 1965. In terms of official members in the group, ‘Freak Out’ comprised Ray Collins (vocals and harmonica), Jim Black (drums), Roy Estrada (bass guitar), and Elliot Ingber (alternate lead and rhythm guitar). Zappa had an acute perception for the ugly, the freakish, and the future. He made singers like Tiny Tim acceptable in the cutting chase of the music market. His lyrics on ‘Freak Out’ are cautiously prophetic in relation to the recent New York disaster. "Mister America, walk on by, your schools that do not teach. Mister America, walk on by, the minds that won't be reached. Mister America, try to hide, the emptiness that's you inside. But you find that the way you've lied and all the corny tricks you've tried Would not forestall the rising tide of hungry freaks". Further mention must be made of the notorious female bass guitarist Carol Kaye (Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew), who displayed some highly improvised riffs on this seminal masterpiece. In 1967, Frank played London's Albert Hall with a 50-piece orchestra, pre-dating the classical George Martin input of the Beatles and the symphonic Deep Purple collaboration. A further departure of Art Tripp III and Estrada, who decided to opt for the blues wailing Captain Beefheart, was very much par for the course with the Zappa circus. Zappa's second album, ‘Absolutely'’, holds the disquieting position of being the first concept album to utilise visual aids. Not only did it pre-empt the Beatles’ ‘Revolver’, but it also gave Frank the undisputed reputation as the "anarchist king", and one of the first artists to produce a rock album as though it was a single piece of music. Continued next week... Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm ------------- KEEF HARTLEY ------------- Shiloh e-mailed Keef Hartley recently... and received a reply! Hi Keef You won't believe it that I feature most of your albums on a blues show in sunny Cape Town, South Africa. We have just had the North Sea Jazz Festival, so the fusion of blues is well received in this environment. Who am I? Well nobody in particular but I was one of those DJs that sat on a boat out at sea called Peace Radio off the coast of Israel in 1980. We played the whole album of "Halfbreed" continually while we played chess. I am particularly interested in knowing if they will be remastering "Halfbreed" / "North West Six" and "Time is near"? I am just on the brink of completing a book called "The Seeker's Guide" which has a definite couple of pages dedicated to your individual stance in the seventies. I would be keen to hear some hidden stories when you take a break from the carpentry. The pound goes a long way in Cape Town if you and your wife are looking for a sunny holiday. Like the Canadian band Lighthouse / Ides of March / The Flock and Chase you will never be forgotten. My radio show has approximately 75 000 listeners and focuses on the fifties, sixties and seventies. I would be keen to send you some recordings. Hope you don't mind if I mention the "Halfbreed" theme as a sincerely stolen riff from Herbie Mann's "Coming home baby" as in Quicksilver Messenger Service's "The Truth". Kind Regards Shiloh Noone KEEF REPLIED: Hi Just came in the office and Ian told me there was an email waiting. Good to know, some people are still getting pleasure from the old stuff. Is your radio station on the net? I'm not computer literate at all, but I'm sure Ian can "tune in" to it. Regarding Halfbreed / Battle of NW6: They had a remastered CD re-issue in Europe / USA during the mid 90s, but are now deleted. Time is near got a European CD re-issue but not USA. However, we licensed these (unofficially) to a firm in Russia who have pressed 500 copies of the 1st 6 of my albums. Both Halfbreed / Time is.. and Battle are still available at various internet sites. What is the book about? What questions would you like answering? fortunately I can work as and when I like on cabinet making, so usually have a few hours a day to mull over the old music stuff. How did my stuff sell in South Africa. The old royalty statements show a few sales, but not too many. Rhodesia seemed to buy a lot more. I'm in the process of trying to collect overseas issues of my back catalogue. So if you ever come across any of my singles they would certainly fill a few gaps. Flock...I remember them fondly. I always liked to hear violin in a rock context. Ides of March were good too. I still play their vehicle LP from time to time. Lighthouse were good too. Did they do the album called Sunny Days? I only vaguely recall Chase. What about bands from over there during the time? Ian has played me a few things his wife has but I can't recall most of there names. I know he has a few groups he is searching for from over there. Can you recommend any good on line shops for him? Can't remember where I pinched the Halfbreed theme from. To be honest I seem to remember using it coming from a live thing we used to do with John Mayall. Don't know where he pinched it from though! Good to hear from you. Keep in touch with any questions Keef -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music THE USUAL - SIX SONGS FROM THE INSIDE Street Level CDSLS(EP)111 With clever, melodic, intricate, and rocking songs, The Usual satisfy. This is music to go out to, to hear, to see, and to dance to. The Usual's music is polished, but don't think over-produced, slick, glossy pop rock overworked to the point of soul-lessness. Instead, think crisp, melodic, beat-full rock full of musicianship. Their songs are pretty, but that does not exclude rock. That they use lovely harmony vocals does not mean the tunes have no sharp edges. This quartet drives on rockfully, all musos participating fully and playing with precision. The musicians play out their lines and mesh smoothly in the compositions. In other words, this is not thud and blunder rock. This is hip, sophisticated music that moves along, and moves one, without losing its rock sensibilities. The Usual do not bash the listener over the head, but rather James Stewart, Tom Fox, Yo-yo Buys, and Paul Tizzard move the body and impress the mind. The six songs on this CD are: 'The Shape That I'm In', 'In My Head', ("There are angels and demons in my head" -- I understand this), 'I'm Going Nowhere' (but going at a driving-drum pace, a breathtaking song), 'From the Inside', 'Do You Know What I Mean?' (Not the old Lee Michaels song), and with 'If I Gave You My heart' the disc closes with a happy, yet laconic, skipping song. I don't know how The Usual named themselves, but I do know when I go somewhere and have "the usual", I'm enjoying a favorite -- as when I play one of The Usual's CDs. Kurt Shoemaker, Blanco, Texas mailto:kurt@sarockdigest.com ------------------ LONDON LEKKER London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music GIVE ME THE GOOD NEWS - CROCODILE HARRIS http://www.new.co.za/~currin/crocodile.html Robin Graham made the big time with the timeless hit 'Give Me The Good News', reaching number 14 on the local charts, but selling numerous copies worldwide with particular success in France {650 000 copies sold! - ed}. It should come as no surprise then when I say that this is the stand out track on the album. Although having said that, 'Miss Eva Goodnight' featuring a certain Allan Faull (of Falling Mirror fame) on guitar certainly vies for the title of stand out track on the album. This is different to the version on the 'Best of SA Pop' CD, being harder rocking and faster. This song fared better than 'The Good News' in SA as it made number 5 on the charts, perhaps the line 'Dictatorship was never honest' made 'Good News' a little bit too much bad news for the apartheid government. Like these two singles, the rest of the album features that same big production sound and driving piano which is somewhat reminiscent of Meatloaf. (However I don't think Harris would have fared as well had he called himself "Babotie"). The production comes courtesy of Tully McCully, who plays guitar on most tracks and wrote or co-wrote the majority of the tracks, including having a hand in both singles. Lyrically, a number of the songs cover the issue of marriage and infidelity. 'Savage Eyes' begins with the line 'The Battle of Marriage has just begun' while 'Great Seducers' talks of men having affairs and includes the line 'Another man's wife is sleeping alone.' With this album, Harris shows a consciousness of social issues and delivers this in full blown rock style with a powerful, passionate voice. Forget Elton, this is the real Crocodile Rock. Jim Hori wrote recently: Here is the section of the liner notes from the compilation "Blood and Fire - Niney and Friends 1971-1972" (Trojan Records TRLS 263) written by Steve Barrow which mention Rodriguez: "Shortly after the sessions which brought forth the music on this compilation, Niney prouced a hit for the great Jamaican soul singer Ken Boothe (a version of the US singer-songwriter Rodriguez' 'Silver Words'). He was also successful with another soulful vocalist Delroy Wilson ('Rascal Man', included here, and a cover of Rodriguez again with 'Halfway Up the Stairs)." This inspired John Samson to start some Reggae Sun Splash surfing and he discovered a list of covers of 'Silver Words'. John writes: Here's a link to a page that will give you a list of releases called 'Silver Words'. However, it often credits the song to Boothe/Brown. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=HSILVER|WORDS I've checked the following artists who have covered the song: Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy, Richie Stephens, Ken Boothe and Mafia & Fluxy. They are all reggae covers and all sound quite similar. I found a download of the Ken Boothe version: http://www.btinternet.com/~ranksreggaerevival/mp3_page.htm {this is a one minute MP3 - ed} Delroy Wilson's version of 'Halfway Up The Stairs' is included on an album called 'Rock On: Greatest Hits of The Observer Label' and can be found at: http://www.rounder.com/Album.asp?catalog_id=6346 {The song is listed as a '12" Discomix', nogal - ed} Brian Currin writes: I found a CD in Look and Listen at Canal Walk in Cape Town this week for R50, titled 'This Is Reggae - Rhythm Addict' which includes the Ken Boothe version of 'Silver Words' (though the line "it's not what I'm smoking" has been neatly edited out). Ken Boothe was the Jamaican who had a UK number 1 hit in 1974 with his cover of Bread's 'Everything I Own'. By co-incidence Boy George was topping the Springbok Radio charts this week in 1987 with his cover of 'Everything I Own'. The 'This is Reggae' compilation CD also includes a number of other reggae greats like Bob Marley, John Holt, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals and Inner Circle. Is there no end to the mystery that is Rodriguez? "...questions fell, but no-one stopped to listen..." Would everybody who owes Rodriguez money (and that includes US rapper Nas) please form a queue on the right... ------------------------------------ COME GET IT I GOT IT - DAVID HOLMES ------------------------------------ David Holmes' recent compilation CD has sold over 50 000 copies to date and is currently number 143 in the Amazon.co.uk sales rank. A "music fan" from Cambridge was moved to write on the Amazon.co.uk website that he would give David Holmes' CD 5 stars straight away for opening with "the fantastic 'Sugarman' by the rarely heard and criminally ignored Sixto Rodriguez. It's beautiful, a great opener, and I love it." He actually gave the whole CD only 3 stars. -------------------------------------- RODRIGUEZ CDs - The Current Situation -------------------------------------- This info is subject to change without notice (hopefully!) The trio recently added their musical talents to Koos Kombuis’ newie, ‘Equilibrium’, and last week Ross Campbell (d), Brydon Bolton (b) and Alex Bozas (g) were the "house band" at the Zem Kafé launch of the second Breyten Breytenbach CD, ‘Lady One’. Benguela’s stripped-down moody, ambient sound features strongly on this new album and slotted in perfectly alongside Breytenbach on songs like ‘Another Country’, and an emotionally harrowing new collaboration (not on the album) based on a poem written by the poet on September 12, 2001 in New York. On Friday night at the Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory (CT), these "current" favourites will be shrugging off all these plaudits, ignoring all their illustrious temporary frontmen, and laying on a full course of pure Benguela sounds. Also appearing are Honeybee and Crockette on the decks. It starts at 9.00 and it’s R30 to get in.
