The festival is renowned for being the country’s gentler music festival. It’s also the country’s largest camping event. The landscape alters over night from green pastures to a vibey array of people and brightly coloured tents set against an exquisite backdrop of the southern Drakensberg. This year’s extensive line-up has some pleasant and exciting surprises for festival-goers. Breaking news is that the legendary Ishmael, previously of the renowned hip-hop outfit Prophets of Da City and former lead singer in Kwaito group Skeem, is the headline act for Splashy this year. His unique reinvention of R&B, using South African hip hop and kwaito with twists and hints of traditional style, has made him the current hero of the music industry and the nation’s dance floors. The Bamboo Mountain Stage offers a package of South Africa’s most distinguished singer/songwriters Roger Lucey and Syd Kitchen, and visiting sensuous singer-songwriter and guitarist Nicolette Aubourg who has made a trip from Los Angeles in the US specially for Splashy Fen. eTV arts man, Roger Lucey, will be playing electric guitar and accompanied by Brendan Jury on violin and Dan Chiorboli on percussion. This trio has almost completed a new album and will be headed for performances in Italy soon. The enigmatic Syd Kitchen, whose latest album has received rave reviews, will be accompanied by a special guest band. The line-up is a diverse mixture of world, rock, folk and hip hop and includes: Blindgait, Binary, Plush, Even Flow, Ketamine, Jimmy 12 Inch, Perez, Ian Henderson, Slugs of War, Starskii, Thirty Three, Golliwog, Ishmael, DJ Ready D Rebus, Sippies Blues Band and Chicago-style Wills Blues Band, Music First! The six bands competing in the finals were Aftertaste, Mann Friday, About Blank, My Latest Ex, Scarlet Host, and The Rudimentals. The judges for the contest were Francois & Theo (Kobus!), George Bacon (Hog Hoggidy Hog) and Paul Blom (from Flamedrop & F8), and they didn’t have an easy time picking a winner due to the general high standard. The eventual winners were Mann Friday, who have just completed the recording of their debut album (to be launched at The Jam on Friday night - see ‘Concerts’ section below). For their win, Mann will receive recording time from London Connection Studios, R500 cash and a bottle of Cuervo. Second was My Latest Ex and third was The Rudimentals This competition spanned a phenomenal month for the Purple Turtle, the unmissable purple building just off Greenmarket Square in the Cape Town city centre. The response to this competition, and the enthusiastic crowds it attracted, is sure to re-establish the Purple Turtle as a premier live venue in Cape Town. With the most of the entries of such impressive standard, the Turtle is currently planning events to incorporate the 6 Finalists as well as all those bands who came second in the half dozen Heats, whereby music videos will be produced for promotion. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES --------------------------------------------------- ‘SEIZE THE DAY’ - THE FULL STORY It all started when Brett Morris and Mike Barnwell, a creative team at FCB Johannesburg, were tasked to come up with a TV ad to launch the new Vodacom product ‘4U’, the first cellular package in South Africa to offer per-second billing. With this in mind they developed the payoff line "Make every second count" and the much-loved bungee jumping baby was born. This was quite a radical visual and they needed a song to match. When searching for a music track they realised that buying an existing song would prove too expensive and time consuming, so together with Creative Director Eoin Welsh, Brett and Mike approached freelance music producer Alistair Coakley (ex-Hotline). They then called in vocalist Clint van der Walt and literally overnight, the four wrote and produced a 55-second song called ‘Seize the Day’, to use as a soundtrack for the commercial. Soon after the TV campaign was launched, the ad agency, radio stations and music shops were all inundated with calls from people wanting to know the name of the band that did the song for the ‘4U’ commercial. But of course there was no completed track, so Vodacom commissioned Brett, Eoin, Alistair and Mike to produce a full-length version of ‘Seize the Day’. They formed a band name using the first letter of each of their names and in the tradition of bands like Gorillaz the virtual band BEAM was born. The song was then released on the Mark Pilgrim show and it became even more popular, at one stage being voted on to a weekly chart show alongside top international bands. It soon caught the attention of EMI and they signed a deal with Vodacom to release the song as a CD single, including an unplugged and kwaito version (for which Molefi Thulo and Lele Mokatsane wrote and rapped lyrics), which was released on 2 April 2002. Although they haven’t yet given up their day jobs, BEAM intends producing more music in the near future. Stay tuned. Compiled by Dave Chislett, it features 16 short stories that touch on many relevant aspects of life in SA during the past few years, and some of the not-so-relevant. Chislett contributes ‘Sisyphus Moon’, a strange tale about digging holes at night. Less strange is Andrew Bond’s simplistic and touching ‘The Growing Pains Of Godfrey Mhlungu’, which gently introduces AIDS and the resulting loss of innocence into a young boy’s happy domestic situation. There are also contributions from Gordon Glyn Jones, Peter van Straaten, and Hagen Engler (currently fronting the Jedi Rollers). There’s a "barmy" tale from Daryn Katz, a clever alphabetically written rock suicide story by Dror Eyal, and a great SA short story about retribution, in the classic Roald ‘Kiss Kiss’ Dahl tradition, called ‘The Vulture’ by Andrew Ing. Hopefully there will be an ‘Urban 2’ very soon. ‘Urban 1’ is now available online at R79.99 from One World: http://www.oneworld.co.za/index.cfm?bec=4321&ID=URB1 ------------------- MORE REVIEWS For more reviews of new and recent South African CD releases and re-issues please visit: AMUZINE http://www.cd.co.za/reviews.htm OPEN RECORD http://www.openrecord.co.za ______________________________________________ 4. CLASSIC ROCK ---------------- SHILOH'S CORNER VELVET UNDERGROUND (in the shadow of the avant-garde) Part 2 of 3 The social scene in New York was ever changing but still maintained a remnant of the early beatnik revivalists, in particular artiste Andy Warhol. Andy's charisma and influence in the pop circles was fundamental due to his social connections, art magnitude and MGM backing. Through a number of social gatherings at Café Bizarre he assembled Sterling Morrison, Mo Tucker and a German socialite actress Nico. Maureen 'Mo' Tucker replaced Angus on the drums and thus out of the rudiments of this strange combo came the notorious banana album "The Velvet Underground and Nico". Naturally Andy Warhol would join in with a theatrical blend of light shows and dancing. The debut master was recorded in the spring of 1966 and rejected by nearly all of the major companies. Eventually MGM (thanks to Andy) released the album in its entirety the following year. Content was always a problem and seemed to be a permanent cross for the Underground ventures. The group was fired from Café Bizarre for performing "Black Angels' Death Song" after been told not to. The rejection of their debut album was largely due to the track "Heroin" and the SMS ode "Venus in furs". In hindsight their debut was badly recorded, highly overextended on time and disturbingly overwhelmed by Nico. A watershed event took place in Boston when Nico and Andy Warhol arrived late for a gig. This was par for the course with Lou Reed and John Cale becoming increasingly tired of the egotistical prima Donna vibe. They hired Steve Sesnick as their new manager, divorced themselves from the socialite ambiance and theatrics and released their rowdy "White light / white heat". April 1969 their finest moment evolved out of the eponymous album with its charismatic melody and strangeness of charm. Different in all manner of speaking one is quietly hypnotised by the whimsical entry "Candy says" and the puritan "Pale blue eyes" / "Jesus" which had everything to do with folk rock inclusion Dough Yule. Dough was recruited from a folk rock group called the Glass Menagerie and featured as a multi instrumentalist - guitar, bass, piano, organ, drums and vocals. The eponymous album captured a life line for those that refused to become one part of the bourgeoisie embrace of flower power. Conclusion next week... Shiloh Noone, Cape Town mailto:shiloh@sarockdigest.com http://www.sarockdigest.com/shiloh Blues and Variation Fine Music Radio 101.3 FM Wednesdays 10 pm -------------- USA FOR AFRICA Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music BLUES BROERS - CELLAR TAPES The tone for fun is established in the opening Bo Diddley beat of the whimsical 'I'd Rather Be Sad Than Happily Married' and continues as the band plays a well done live set of electric blues. The liner notes quote Willem Möller, recording engineer, "The songs were recorded straight onto master, mixed on the premises, and not stirred in the studio." It shows, too, because this live album has that live musician chemistry of watching a performance. The second track, 'Life's a Melodrama' has a funky lounge rock feel with streetwise lyrics delivered in a c'est la vie voice. This song, like many on 'Cellar Tapes', has liberal doses of sharp electric guitar, right on time bass, and energetic, alert-to-the-moment drums. By the end of this Blues Broers set, you've been treated to flashy yet meaningful-to-the-song guitar work, up-tempo jams, a nice introduction to the band, and some fine original songs in various blues styles: blues-rock, walking blues, and so on -- with some slower, casually earnest numbers interspersed, such as 'Dragonfly'. Like y'all, I've heard my share of live albums. Most seem to fail to capture the fun, spontaneity, and special magic of live music. Not these guys. This CD captures live music so well I can almost feel the music, taste the beer, smell the cigarettes, and hear the bartender yell, "Last Call, everybody out of the pool!" at the end. I leave pumped up and with a head full of music. I've been hearing about the Blues Broers for some time, and have caught some of their tracks and musos on the Tassenberg live CDs. Here we've got Albert Frost, Agent Orange, Rob Nagel, John Mostert, the late Frank D. Frost, and special guest, Clayton Frick. You know these guys, and they know the blues, and rock. 'Empty Bars' is a melancholy treatise on the sameness of women the singer has met lately. The pace picks up with the road blues song 'Dragonfly', then goes to the heavy blues traditional-sounding 'Dolly Mae'. A band introduction, the rollicking 'Glove', then 'Cellar Tapes' closes with the ribald 'Black Eye Snake'. Treat yourself to some music about being blue that makes you feel good. Blues are for sharing. Treat yourself to some fun blues, to the Blues Broers. However, listening to this album I also end up smiling, mainly due to the fact that Robin plays feel good folk blues and does so in that wonderful laid back style that is his trade mark. 'Dream of Birds' is the next installment in the quality albums career of Auld and will not disappoint established fans and should attract some new ones. It is a well-produced collection of mellow rock tunes, that could well be subtitled 'Music to Watch Sunsets to' as it has that tranquil feel to it. Even the back cover seems to acknowledge this as it has a picture of a sunset on it. The album seems to have more of a blues feel to it than his previous offerings, and this is particularly so on 'Day I Said Goodbye' which features some fine guitar plucking and understated jaws harp. It conjures up images of the small band of musicians playing around a campfire on the banks of the Mississippi. Other stand out tracks are the opener 'Queen of the River' which is a flowing folky number and the bouncier 'Long Lost'. Well it's getting late and I must head off to bed, hopefully to dream of birds, but now I will do so to a cool soundtrack of catchy folk blues rock which, when my wife wakes me up, she won't know for sure why I'm smiling. English born Peter Stirling Lee entered the top 10 under the name Daniel Boone, knocking Springwater down to number 15. Springwater had spent 12 weeks on the top 10, peaking at number 2 with 'I will Return'. Time would tell if the songs title was to prove true. I am a musician (guitar player) living in Los Angeles now for many years, however I grew up in SA. I was there when Freedoms Children, Otis Waygood, etc etc were doin' it. Actually there was a band in Durban called Scratby Hud that were awewsome (as I recollect). I am not known outside of Durban although I was resident guitar player and leader of the rhythm section for Murray Campbell's Big Band for a spell, played on several tracks on Syd Kitchen's City Child, had a Fusion outfit with Mark (Spook) Kahn and pretty much held the #1 chair as studio guitarist in Durbs for about 2 years before I left to pursue it in the States. Having played pretty much all over the US especially the LA scene and having existed in the dark steamy underbelly of Hollywood for over 16 years I have now turned my attention to writing and recording at home on a Pro Tools setup and work as a Film/Television/Commercial Gaffer to pay bills.
