5FM EASTER ROCK FESTIVAL
The following artistes are confirmed for the 5FM Easter Rock Festival
taking place at The Rand Show in Gauteng on Saturday March 30: First
Project, BOO!, Max Normal, Semisane, Sunways, Tweak, Watershed,
Wonderboom, and Zen Arcade.
This line-up represents some of the best rock and pop artistes in South
Africa with Zen Arcade, Sunways, Watershed, Wonderboom and Semisane all
nominated for SAMA’s (South African Music Awards).
The show starts at 13h30 and will close at 21h00. The official after
party will once again be held at Roxy Rhythm Bar in Main Road, Melville. Entrance to the after party is R10 with your Rand Show ticket or R30 without. Sunways, Cutting Jade and Barney Simon will provide the
after-party entertainment. Fans are encouraged to come and meet their
favorite artistes from the 5FM Easter Rock Festival as well as industry
VIPs and celebs. Band merchandise will be available at the concert as
well as at the after party.
The 5FM Easter Rock Festival entrance is free to all Rand Show patrons.

FREE JAZZ CONCERT AT V&A WATERFRONT AMPHITHEATRE -
A TASTER FOR THE BIG EVENT!
In what has become the traditional warm-up for the annual North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town, festival organisers ESP-Afrika will again be hosting a free concert for all the city’s jazz fans in the Amphitheatre at the V&A Waterfront on Thursday 28 March from 6-11pm. This appetizer for the two-day North Sea Jazz Festival 2002, which starts two days later at the Good Hope Centre, will include some of the Festival’s star attractions, as well as an emerging and acclaimed Cape jazz ensemble.
The line-up includes the Gauteng duo, Absolute Zero, currently drawing a lot of attention with their ‘Spirit’ debut album, who will be making
their Festival debut this year. The duo, comprising Angelo Angelos
(piano, electric piano) and Mervin Naidoo (bass), blend the European and Latin American smooth jazz styles and sounds with those of Africa. Also making his NSJF debut is Wambali, the very highly rated (and politically controversial) singer from Mzuzu in Northern Malawi. Wambali’s music encompasses a range of influences including gospel, traditional Malawian music, and western pop and rock. His fifth album, ‘Zani Muwone’, has just been released on the Instinct Africaine label in South Africa. Andy Narell, who completes the Festival contingent at this free concert, is the American steel pan virtuoso whose musical hybrid of Latin Jazz, Afro-Caribbean, and some pop influences, has gained him a huge SA following.
The only act appearing at this free concert that is not on this year’s
NSJF-CT line-up is Little Giant. This 12-person group plays a broad
selection of Light Jazz and African Jazz, and features a range of Cape
musicians all extremely talented, and all under the age of 18. The group was assembled by Ezra Ngcukana, following a request from the organisers of the 2000 Jazzathon in Cape Town for a more representative collection of Cape musicians, and was subsequently a big success at the 2001 Grahamstown Festival. Ngcukana is the group’s conductor and musical arranger and George Werner is the group’s musical director and will be making a rare Little Giant appearance on piano. Claire Forbes, the only female in the group, is on saxophone.

OLD MUTUAL JAZZ ENCOUNTERS 2002
"Proudly Celebrating South African Jazz"
In line with its commitment to developing South African jazz talent, Old Mutual is proud to announce the launch of Old Mutual Jazz Encounters 2002. The panel of judges, who will be tasked with the tough job of adjudicating the 2002 competition, are Don Albert; Don Laka; Judith Sephuma and Dizu Plaatjies. The competition is open to all citizens and permanent residents of South Africa (including non-residents with valid study permits). Auditions and Showcases will take place in three central metropolitan centres, namely Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
The six adjudicated categories will be: Vocal Jazz (solo contemporary
jazz vocalist), Vocal Afro-Jazz (solo African jazz vocalist), Jazz
Group/Soloist (contemporary jazz instrumental prize for soloist or
group), Afro-Jazz Group/Soloist (African jazz instrumental prize for
soloist or group), Composition (musical writing), Merit Awards
(additional awards for those "deserving of special mention" in the above five categories) The Prize Money for the National winners is R20 000 per category.
Entries will be accepted from 13 March until 26 April. There is a

Applicants will be required to submit a completed entry form as well as
their best jazz performances recorded on audiotape, CD, DAT, or
videotape. The adjudication process begins with the selection of the
best candidates in each category from the initial entries. Those
selected will then perform at the regional auditions and winners will be chosen to perform in regional showcases alongside a headline act.
The national adjudication also takes place at these regional showcases
and the selected national winners will be invited to perform at the
National Gala Event in Johannesburg.

WHO ARE PEDXULU?
Robert Trunz, MELT2000 supremo, explains the origins of this new SA
group who will be making their major debut at the upcoming North Sea
Jazz Festival in Cape Town over the Easter weekend:
"For me this is a realisation of a dream that started during the
‘Outernational Meltdown’ recordings in 1994 when musicians from all the
South African tribes and their friends from Brazil and the UK united.
Airto and Jose Neto came from California where the two Brazilians
reside, Byron Wallen and Andrew Missingham ventured out of their London
Acid Jazz scene to record and perform with Mabi Thobejane, Madala
Kunene, Amampondo, Sipho Gumede, Pops Mohamed, Mxolise 'Dave' Mayakne,
Shaluza Max and the late Moses Taiwa Molelekwa.
Throughout the years I was able to work with the finest drummers and
percussionists and I feel very privileged to unite the first full
PedXulu Tribal Gathering during the North Sea Jazz Festival in my
beloved Cape Town. The Pedis said the Zulus can't play their songs and
the Xhosas didn't want to play the Pedi rhythms but they were just given an infusion by Airto Moreira. A year later we returned to South Africa with the master congalero Changuito and bata player Mayito from Cuba. Then the Xhosas added the Pedi to their show and the Pedi went on to change the Techno and Trance scene with Conga Fury by Juno Reactor -
essentially PedXulu is the story of Mabi Thobejane and Amampondo".
So PedXulu is the United South African Tribal Gathering:
The "Ped" - PedXulu is a revolving and changing gathering headed by Pedi veteran master drummer Mabi ‘Gabriel’ Thobejane (ex-Malombo Jazz) who’s joined by his 23 year-old cousin Thabang Philip Tabane (son of Phillip Thabane, also ex-Malombo Jazz). Both Thabang’s drumming and vocal range have impressed and humbled me to a degree where I feel the international press should look at his profile more carefully. The unplugged recordings made of the two Pedis, Mabi and Thabang, at my South African home suggest it to be a welcome change to the World Music landscape of Africa - free MP3 downloads are available from http://www.afribeat.com
The "X" - Amampondo, from the Xhosa tribe, are represented by Simpiwe
Matole, Michael Ludonga and Mandla Lande, who have followed Mabi in
joining Juno Reactor touring both the USA and Japan.
The "Ulu" - From Zululand are those friends and collaborators for many
years, Madala Kunene with Baba Mokwena on guitar and Sibusiso (Bernard)
Mdaweni on bass.
Esp-Afrika, the North Sea Jazz Festival organisers, announced last week
that Ernestine "Ernie" Deane (vocalist from Moodphase 5ive) will be
performing with Pedxulu on the ‘Kippies’ stage at the NSJF-CT2002 as
will Madosini, from rural Transkei.

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES

KOMBUIS MUSIEK - VARIOUS ARTISTS
Isn’t it much nicer these days that artists can get to hear their own
tribute albums? (the three remaining members of the Doors even played on theirs!). Here the only contribution to this album by the tributee is a few snatches of dialogue and guitar samples from his previous work. But this collection of Koos Kombuis songs, as interpreted by other SA artists, had the KK seal of approval before Gary Herselman and Matthew van der Want began this project. It was originally planned as a series of hip hop interpretations of some of Koos’ songs and the two believed that Koos wasn’t taking them seriously, but he gave his blessing anyway, "pleased that at least we f**ken asked him". And the "Baard van Gordon’s Baai" likes the results too - "...dis a collectors item wat ek trots sal wees om in my huis te hê", he confirms on the sleeve.
Gary Herselman’s association with Koos goes back to their co-involvement on the ‘Vöelvry’ tour, when Koos was then opening all those shows as Andre le Toit, just before he "gemorphed" into his new Koos Kombuis identity. As ‘Piet Pers’, Herselman played bass for the Gereformeerde Blues Band, and as ‘Bokkie Buys’ contributed bass to the ‘Niemandsland’ album. A conversation between Herselman and Matthew van der Want (also a longtime Kombuis devotee) eventually became a reality as the two produced, engineered and played all the instruments on almost all these tracks, with a stream of SA artists lining up to add vocals and ideas to the diverse arrangements.
The bulk of these 12 songs are drawn from the two epic albums
‘Niemandsland’ and ‘Elke Boemelaar Se Droom’, both released on CD in 1994. Frank Opperman’s opening version of the usually rocking ‘Johnny Is Nie Dood Nie’ gets deep into the soul of the song with his sensitive vocal over a restrained drum & bass beat. Michael Simpson gives ‘Paranoia’ a full kwaito make-over, Tonia Selley sings a straight-forward, soundtracky and utterly-gorgeous version of the classic ‘Onder In My Whiskeyglas’, and Liela Groenewald sings Koos’ ode to his long-missed domestic servant ‘Kytie’ with a dour tone over a beaty Mbaqanga backing. Q-Zoo then tackle ‘Lisa se Klavier’ and, although it’s a sweet and decent enough version, it somehow fails to catch the emotion in this often-covered song.
The rest of the songs are from other KK albums and sources - ‘Jive Baby
Jive’ by Barbora Tellinger is a reworking of an old KK demo, ‘Imagine Ek En Jy’ was located on a rare KK home tape/bootleg by Paul Riekert and given some special treatment. Herselman and Van der Want (here credited as ‘Streak and Tweak’) also put together the dancey house opus, ‘Diep Huis Kombuis’. Afrikaans "geraas-masters", Not My Dog tear ‘Verslaaf’ to pieces in the grand old "Ek is veslaaaaaaf op rok en rol" tradition. On ‘Autobank Vastrap’, Gary Herselman uses a ‘Da Da Da’ Casio beat to close the album off on a typically weird note.
The really great tribute albums are rarer than a Randall Abraham
compliment, and ‘Kombuis Musiek’, as with most tribute albums, lands up
being a respectful and appropriate but quite strange mixture that is
recommended mostly to all Koos Kombuis fans. But if you want to find out what all the fuss is about, then start with those two albums from 1994 or buy yourself ‘Mona Lisa’. (SS)

At this stage Rick Wakeman was recruited by the progressive rock group Yes and in stepped Blue Weaver (Mick), ex-Amen Corner, future Keef Hartley. Blue Weaver operated under a pseudonym Wynder K. Frogg. Internal friction resulted in Dave Cousins leaving the band in 1971 and recording his brilliant solo album "Two weeks last summer". Dave carried the true beauty of Strawbs through his 1972 release with the mesmerising nine minute masterpiece "Blue Angel". His all star backing band comprised Rick Wakeman, Roger Glover on bass (Deep Purple), John Hiseman on drums (Colosseum) and guitarist Miller Anderson (Keef Hartley Band).
During this time Hudson and Ford decided to venture into their own folk duet and captured the mid seventies with classic singles like "Burn baby, burn" and "Floating in the wind". At this stage Strawbs went through a sickly spurt of commercial release with singles like "Part of the union" and "Lay down". After Blue Weaver left John Hawken (ex-Nashville Teens / Renaissance) entered a season where the Strawbs were about to venture into the rock arena. With recently recruited Chas Cronk, bass / Rod Coombes, drums (ex-Steelers Wheel) and Rod Lambert on lead guitar the group recorded their landmark rock album "Hero and heroine" in April '74.
During the late seventies a number of albums came to the fore with a much harder genre in keeping with the times. But for those who wish to discover the mystical dimension and inner beauty of the Strawbs a more introspective focus should be given to the 1974 album "Ghosts" which featured the haunting "Grace Darling" with full choral backing by the choir at the chapel of Charter House School (where Genesis had attended). Further focus should be given to the 1975 release "Nomadness" with classics like "Hanging in the gallery" and "Golden salamander". It is these gems that separate Strawbs from the predictable rock rhythm of the late seventies.

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
GREATEST HITS - JUST JINGER
On every popular album there are some songs everyone likes, a few personal favorites, and then some songs that don't strike a responsive chord. Of course, that's why greatest hits packages were invented.
Like you, gentle reader, I use greatest hits albums as a means of acquiring the best of a band (usually just the hits), and to see if a band's individual albums might be worth buying. Just Jinger's albums are worth owning, but this 'Greatest Hits' is the one to own if only one is possible.
This greatest hits CD starts of with the gentle 'Shallow Waters', moves to their phenomenal 'Sugar Man', then the melancholy 'Father and Farther', the philosophical 'No God?', and on through eighteen tracks, without a dog in the bunch, for almost 70 minutes of music.
Despite some personnel changes from album to album, the Just Jinger style has remained remarkably consistent due to front man Art Matthews's warm yet rock-worthy voice. Behind his sincere singing, these songs have solid, professional playing by the various sidemen Art has worked with through the years.
How does one determine musical quality? Songwriting? Got it, on 'Father
and Farther', for one. Melody? 'Shallow Waters' for one example and
'Perfect Ground' for another. Real Rock? There's 'Paradise In Summertime', a song that belongs on every disc jockey's set of summer fun songs.
As usual, JJ's cover graphics and interior design are excellent. On their greatest hits, the cover is eye-catching and strangely evocative. Where in the past their CD covers were quiet, this one silently screams: a reverse-color print of a bullet-riddled car.
No matter what one thinks of Just Jinger's other CDs, their 'Greatest Hits' is 100% fine music, track after track. This is one of a handful of South African albums that make me paraphrase Samuel Goldwyn: "I don't care if it makes money or not, I just think every South African should own a copy of 'Just Jinger's Greatest Hits'.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
MADIBA BAY - KOOS KOMBUIS
Koos Kombuis was one of the voortrekkers of Afrikaans music, boldly going where no Afrikaans troubadour had gone before. Ja, he was the oom who helped Afrikaners get in touch with their plesierig side, singing Afrikaans lyrics to great rock and folk rock tunes. Okay cool, so now charf me how come are nearly half the songs on 'Madiba Bay' in English. Isn't he sending out some confusing messages here, (or should that be gemors code)?
No, once you have discovered something, you can't discover it again, you have to move on, and this was what he did. The language he chose to sing in, although important, took more of a back seat to the message in the music.
On 'Madiba Bay' he focuses on the emerging New South Africa, embracing it with warmth and joy as well as sheer relief that the past was now the past. Virtually every song has some reference to the negative past, or a positive outlook for the future or both. Lines like 'The pain is all gone, wake up to the sunlight, wake up to the dawn' from the title track and 'We were victims of the struggle and victims of apartheid, but we've got to reach the sun before it's too late' from 'Duco Box Rasta' are prime examples of this. Even the sing-a-long 'Huisie by die See' contains the line 'almal hoop die struggle is verby'.
A deviation from the New South Africa theme comes in the form of the tribute to the ex-Nirvana singer, 'Who Killed Kurt Cobain', described by some as the greatest song that the world has never heard. With its grungy tune and biting lyrics, this is a classic tune that features some excellent guitar work from Anton L'Amour.
Despite admitting that he 'can't play a damn note, and I'm not sure how to sing' (on the title track), Koos manages to play a variety of styles from folk rock, through reggae rock to the delicately beautiful love song 'Atlantis in Jou Lyf'. He even distorts his vocal chords for a fine Tom Waits-y blues soaked 'Voortrekker Road'. So Koos, it's not as bad as you think, although rhyming Mona Lisa with pizza (my favourite rhyming couplet on the album) might be pushing things a bit.
Like the picture of bright sunshine lighting up Table Mountain on the cover of the album, the music is generally bright, upbeat and optimistic. To paraphrase one of the great Afrikaans poets 'Almal wil dié CD in hul huisie hê.'

It took the Congregation just 6 weeks to make the top spot with the Roger Cook/Roger Greenaway hit 'Softly Whispering I Love You'. Called The English Congregation in the US, the group were one hit wonders, not seeing chart action outside this hit in the US, UK and SA.
Barbra Strisand gained some lost ground as 'Mother' climbed back up to
number 2 after dropping to number 4 from the top spot a few weeks earlier. Meanwhile John Lennon's version headed downward after 4 weeks at number 5.
Harry Nilsson (one of the Beatles' favourite singers) entered the top 10 with 'Without You' as did Neil Reid's 'Mother of Mine'. This meant there were 4 mothers, a son, a father and a child in the top 10. Lower down the charts, Apollo 100's adaptation of Bach's 'Jesu Joy of Man's Desiring' simply called 'Joy' entered the charts at the expense of South African Andre's 'Ek is Verlief op Jou'.

THE NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL - CAPE TOWN 2002
The 4 stages continued...
The ‘Manenberg' Stage
Three of the North Sea Jazz Festival venues at the Good Hope Centre are
indoors, and not directly affected by the occasional Southeaster or
other unusual Cape Town weather patterns. But the massive outdoor
'Manenberg' Stage is still the place where anything can happen, where
the crowds mingle and dance in the open air, and enjoy a broad variety
of eclectic jazz and multi-talented musicians.
First up on the 'Manenberg' stage at the 2002 Festival is the Virtual
Jazz Reality quartet from Cape Town, featuring Ian Smith (trumpet,
flugelhorn, and vocals), Andrew Ford (keyboards, drums and bass), Sammy
Webber (bass and vocals) and Frank Paco (drums and vocals). They’re
followed by the highly-rated SA guitarist Louis Mhlanga, and Andy Narell with the Chakalaka Band. Though a native of New York, Narell has spent more than two decades developing a global reputation as a steel pan virtuoso whose multicultural style embraces a range of Afro-Caribbean, Latin jazz and pop traditions. Following the end of apartheid, Narell discovered his huge South African fanbase and is now regarded as an "honorary", respected and adored SA jazz musician. The final act on the 'Manenberg' Saturday night bill is the Cuban singer Maria Ochoa, who is a world-famous exponent of the Cuban Son style.
Sunday night on the 'Manenberg' stage begins with a set from Absolute
Zero, a Johannesburg duo featuring Angelo Angelos (piano, electric
piano) and Mervin Naidoo (bass). These two ex-Wits Science students play a smooth jazz blend of African, European and Latin American sounds as heard on their popuar 'Spirit' debut CD. Following them will be Afro
Cool Concept featuring Barney Rachabane (sax) and Darius Brubeck
(piano), Lulu Gontsana (drums) and Bongani Sokhela (bass). Up next is
the Jesse van Ruller Quartet, with the Festival's favourite special
guest, Roy Hargrove. The final act of the evening on the 'Manenberg'
stage is a special appearance by the Malawian singer Wambali Mkandawire. Known simply as Wambali, this exciting new talent on the African and World music scenes will be performing tracks off his recent album, 'Zani Muwone', on the Instinct Africaine label.
The 'Bassline' Stage
The fourth venue at the NSJF-CT is the 'Bassline' stage, which many fans unofficially refer to as the 'Basement Stage'. The 'Bassline' is a
low-ceilinged, broad venue with a slightly raised, close-up stage, where all the festival's fusion, experimental and "new" jazz acts appear. Many of the hottest gigs at the two previous NSJF-CTs took place in this funky, smoke-filled room.
The running order for the 'Bassline' stage on Saturday night begins with the new SA outfit Golliwog, a sensational groove-jazz-freeform-funk eight-piece dance band from Cape Town. Hip new SA group Jazzworx appear next on the 'Bassline' stage, featuring guest spots by Paul Hanmer and McCoy Mrubata. Jazzworx are Tebza (vocals, keyboards), Craig Massiv (keyboards, programmer, DJ), and Robi Funk (guitarist, programmer). Closing off Saturday's line-up is French trumpeter Erik Truffaz and the Ladyland Quartet.
Opening on the 'Baseline' Stage on Sunday night is a new Cape Town
"Afro-Latino" group, Tucan Tucan, comprising Frank Paco (drums, vocals), Tony Paco (percussion), Tutu Poane (vocals), Muriel Marco (piano), Jacqueline Wyatt (vocals), Ivan Mazuze (alto sax), and Norwegian Ragnel Tveitan (tenor sax). They will be followed by Daniel Kuffer with Stereodogs, a four-piece consisting of Daniel Kuffer (saxophone), Chris Lohr (Hammond organ), Steve Grant (drums), and Ben Allen (DJ). The Stereodogs' material is an intelligent and danceable fusion of jazz, hip-hop and funk, and their stage act is an exuberant and energizing experience.
Making a welcome Festival debut on the 'Bassline' stage is South
Africa's coolest "hip-pop" group, Max Normal. Fronted by rapper Waddy
Tudor Jones, the group's wicked words, funky beats and dynamic live
performance have conquered audiences across SA and in Europe. Closing
off the Sunday night's entertainment on the 'Bassline' stage for 2002
will be a repeat performance by Martinez Move.
At the conclusion of both the Saturday and Sunday evenings' performances on the 'Bassline' stage (around 1.30am), there will be the traditional Festival After-Party hosted by the Festival organisers.

The Rustlers’ organisers write:
Hi Everybody! Well, the Easter Festival is a week away. People are
starting to arrive to set up the site. Here are a few tips and
answers to the many questions that have been asked:
1. Get out of Gauteng before Friday. We will be opening the gates on Wed morning and you are welcome to come a few days earlier at no extra
charge. In past years, nearly half the people are in by Thursday night.
2. Tickets are R300 per person. Try and get your tickets at Computicket
before you come to ensure a speedy entrance.
3. Bring Mosquito repellant, towel, tent, some warm clothes, a torch and a toothbrush.
4. Friendly bus company is offering a very reasonable bus service to the festival from Durban and from Gauteng - call Ryan at 031 209-8528 or 011 648-7397.
5. The weather seems to be playing along for a change and the rainy
season seems to be over, so temperatures could drop and although it has
been warm, bring some warm stuff in case.
6. To answer all the e-mails asking about ice, there will be ice for
sale as well as Firewood. There will be child care as well as children's entertainment. Under 12 get in free. This year the Mountain Campsite will be opened as a musicians campsite with its own showers and toilets. To keep it exclusive there is an extra charge of R50 for anyone wishing to camp there.
7. We have put up new maps on the website, have a look at these before
you leave. Getting lost can add hours on to your journey. The line-up is complete and the playlist has been put up on the web site, take a look.
8. The offer for discounted tickets is now closed. Don't miss the
Climax. See you soon!

March 29th-April 2nd - It’s a North Sea Jazz Festival weekend at
Compact Disc Wherehouse with some of your favourite North Sea
Jazz Artists performing live, or appearing in store for CD signings. It
is a magical music weekend in Cape Town and Compact Disc Wherehouse is
at the heart of it all. Be sure also to visit our stall at the North Sea Jazz Festival where many of your favourite artists will be available to sign CDs.

Fri. March 29th
1:00pm Ringo Madlingozi - This Cape Town-born vocalist has emerged as
one of South Africa’s strongest new live performing acts. His latest
success is being chosen to perform alongside UB40 on an internationally
released single in benefit of AIDS education for the United Nations.
Ringo will also be performing with UB40 on their upcoming South African
tour. He will also be performing at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and his performance at CD Wherehouse is a rare opportunity to get up-close and personal. Ringo will be available to sign CDs after his performance. There will also be 5 pairs of tickets to see UB40 live in April to be given away after Ringo’s performance in-store!
1:45pm Louis Mhlanga - Mhlanga started his musical career in Zimbabwe in the seventies, at a time when young musicians were inspired by the international sounds of bands like Earth, Wind and Fire and a whole generation of groups were working to fuse those sounds with Shona and Ndebele musical traditions to produce an indigenous African pop groove. Mhlanga played lead guitar in most of those groups. But his interest in traditional music and composing took his talent in directions far more varied than pop music.
Trips overseas broadened Mhlanga’s perspectives. In London he worked with Paul Weller and with a number of London-based African and Caribbean bands featuring names like Dennis Brown and Julian Bahula. Louis is also in town to perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival, and will also be available to meet his fans and sign CDs after his in-store performance.

of the country - that has earned him the respect and the place in the
