ERNIE CLOSES THE ‘WONDER GIGS’ IN STYLE
Ernestine "Ernie" Deane, normally employed as the dynamic vocalist for
MoodPhase 5ive, played a much-anticipated solo set to bring the curtain
(and the house!) down on the first series of the ‘Wonder Gigs’ at the
Beach Road Studios in Sea Point on Saturday night. The ‘Wonder Gigs’
have proved to be a great success for both the organisers (Iain Harris
and Struan Douglas from Afribeat.com) and the artists who performed
these live-recorded sets including Blk Sonshine, Jimmy Dludlu, Richard
Ceasar, Alvin Dyers, Tribe, Golliwog, Alex van Heerden and Derek
Gripper, and Robbie Jansen. Although this is the final gig in the
current series, Afribeat are positive there will be a follow-up series,
and those live recordings should start appearing over the next few
months.
Ernie, a vibrant pocket-sized mixture of Ella Fitzgerald and Macy Gray,
performed a diverse selection of her own original material, accompanied
by fellow-5iver, Riccardo Moretti on keyboards, Brydon Bolton on bass
and Wayne Katz on drums. Ernie scatted, gasped, shrieked, and wrapped
her amazing voice around songs that included a reworking of ‘Praha
Paradise’ (her tribute to the city of Prague off the ‘African Dope Vol
1’ collection), a song written for the production of ‘Spirit’ (where she first worked with Bolton), an alternative version of ‘Amazing Grace’, and other hip-jazz vocal workouts about personal stuff like being on buses, demons, waking up with a hole in your head, and her ‘Fantasy Man’.
Ernie will be back with MoodPhase 5ive when they join Khadja Nin, Bongo
Maffin, Busi Mhlongo, Jive Connection with Vusi Mahlasela, Brasse Vannie Kaap, Robbie Jansen, and Loading Zone in celebrating Human Rights Day at the upcoming African Summer Stage music festival at the Cape Town High School sports fields in Gardens on Thursday March 21 and Friday March 22. TKZEE DO DALLAS
TKZee, the Kwaito/guz superstars arrived home this week from a
whistle-stop US tour, where they performed a one-off show in Dallas. In
their second visit to the Texas town in less than a year, the Dallas gig proved such a success that the guz trio has been invited back for a
10-city US tour later this year. 'Magesh', 'Bouga Luv' and Zwai flew
back to the welcome news that their latest groundbreaking album,
'Trinity', has seen them nominated for ‘Best Duo/Group’ and ‘Best Rap
Album’ at the SAMA 8 awards.
Top video director, Leigh Ogilvie, is nominated in the ‘Best Music
Video’ category for her direction of TKZee's epic 'Ibola Lethu (Our
Game)' hit - the award will be decided by public vote this year.
TKZee still hold the record for number of SAMA's won in a year, when
they won four in 1999, thanks to their hit debut album 'Halloween' and
their 'Shibobo' single featuring Benni McCarthy.

JIMMY DLUDLU OFF TO LONDON
Jazz guitarist and vocalist, Jimmy Dludlu, is set to embark on a
Commonwealth Concert Tour and will share the stage with veteran Courtney Pine from March. The five-date Commonwealth tour will kick off in London’s Manchester Bridgewater followed by Leicester De Montfort Hall, Bristol Colston Hall, London Royal Festival, and ends in grand style at the Brighton Dome. The London tour will be followed by another in Germany and Holland.
The release of ‘Afrocentic’ by Verve/Universal in London marks a
milestone in the career of Dludlu. A plus for Dludlu is that he was
approached by stable mate Pine to share the stage with him. The two have shared the stage twice at previous North Sea Jazz Festivals in Holland.
‘Afrocentric’ sold more than 10 000 copies within two weeks of its
release locally. It later surged to platinum status within a month.
Dludlu is currently working on a live recording of his follow-up
project called ‘Shape of Strings to Come’. The project will feature two
formidable guitarists, Richard Ceasar and Alvin Dyers, in association
with promoters Afribeat and SABC.
Dludlu is a composer, producer and songwriter. He has three albums under his belt with the previous two being his debut, ‘Echo From The Past’ and ‘The Essence Of Rhythm’.

GOLLIWOG TOUR INCLUDES NORTH SEA JAZZ FEST
Things are starting to happen quickly for Golliwog, the exciting new SA
groove-jazz-freeform-funk eight-piece dance band. After playing the Cape Town circuit for the past year, Golliwog had just announced their
upcoming national live dates, including a first brief tour to Gauteng
and Oppikoppi, when they were invited to appear at this year’s North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town over the Easter weekend. Golliwog will open the proceedings on the Bassline Stage on Saturday night (March 30). The band recently recorded a live set as part of the ‘Wonder Gig’ series of concerts and a single from that session, ‘Nasty’, is currently high on the SA Rock Digest charts.
Farrell Adams, the band’s vocalist and veteran of similar outfits like
Nine and Firing Squad explained: "We got that Funk ethic. We want to
have fun, that's it. And we got the chops to do it". Alongside Adams is
Gorm Espen Helfjord, jazz guitarist from Norway, Rob Nel (Interzone,
B-World) on bass, scratch-master The Blunted Stuntman (206) on decks,
and Kesivan Naidoo (Tribe) on drums. The horn section is Nick le Roux
and Daniel Shout on sax, with Lee Thomson (Hog Hoggidy Hog) on trumpet.

FLOWERHEADS NEW SINGLE
The honour of opening last year’s ‘Showcase 3: Unearthed’ CD, a
compilation of tracks by new SA rock bands, fell to "The Band from the
Strand", otherwise known as the five-piece Flowerheads, with their song
‘Satellite Filter’. Flowerheads are Morné du Preez (d), Arno Spies (g),
Wiehann Geldenhuys (g), Herman Rossouw (v), and AJ Graham (b). Just
released is the band’s second single ‘Spacegod’, b/w ‘Down’ and ‘Instant Karma’ (not a Lennon cover), which has already been playlisted on 5FM. The EP was recorded by Jurgen von Wechmar at the Sunset Studios and is a forerunner for the band’s planned full album. (SS)

THE DOLLY ROCKERS - GLORY GLORY (Huh? Records)
Taking their name from an obscure Syd Barrett song from 1970, The Dolly Rockers new release 'Glory Glory', doesn't really sound like Syd (or Pink Floyd), but that spirit of experimentation is echoed (pun intended) here.
Best described as Dark-Pop, this CD is growing on me after each listen. Lead singer Greg Donnelly has a distinctive and pleasant voice, which is perfectly suited to this style of music (or maybe the music chose him?). This album, released 7 years after their debut (which included 'The Book I Write'), features mainly slowly picked electric guitars (not a riff in sight), gentle drums, subtle bass and intriguing lyrics - so it's true then; quiet is the new loud.
Favourite tracks so far (and I'm sure there will be more): 'Sleepytown', 'Race past the sun' and 'Change The World'. (BC)

ROBIN AULD - DREAM OF BIRDS (Free Lunch Productions)
Originally released in 1998 in the UK only, this CD is now available as a limited edition South African release.
'Dream Of Birds' was recorded and mixed between Novasonics in Hertfordshire, Mantrix Music in London and Lloyd Ross' Valley Studios in Joburg. While continuing the work with loops, it features the acoustic Celtic and country influences from Robin's solo work on the UK folk circuit. The song 'Queen of the river' became well known and has been covered by UK folk artists.

OFF THE EDGE - UNFINISHED BUSINESS (Independent)
Despite its almost prophetic title this album, which was originally planned for release at the end of 2001, is now almost finished. One more instrumental song 'Riff Valley' needs to be added, the cover design needs to be finalized and then we can expect this album to be out by April.
After Judy Marshall left the band (and South Africa), Off The Edge driving force Peter Hanmer (no relation to SA jazz pianist Paul Hanmer) got involved in a side-project with Sherry Lee and brought out 'Nowhere Land' under the name Age Of Innocence (I guess Peter was the "age" and Sherry Lee the "innocence"). Peter and bassist Tony Groenewald then found a new female rock voice in Giselle Mynhardt and started work on the new Off The Edge album.
Giselle has a strong rock voice like the Wilson sisters from Heart. 'Alone' is not a cover of the Heart song, but this rock ballad would not be out of place on one of their albums. In fact there are no covers on this album, unless you count 'Still Want You Back' which Peter originally recorded with Age Of Innocence and redoes here in a harder bluesier style.
This will be Off The Edge's 4th Melodic Rock album since 1983 (not counting Peter's limited edition 'The Instrumentals' CD) and fans of Peter's guitar sound (think Trevor Rabin, David Gilmour and Boston's Tom Scholtz), his keyboards (Alan Parsons, anyone?), and powerful rock chick vocals are not going to be disappointed. I know I'm not. (BC)

LOUISE CARVER - NEW SINGLE
Cape Town’s 23-year-old singer-songwriter, Louise Carver, has teamed up
with deep house legend Kenny Hawkes under the UK based record label,
Music For Freaks. ‘Play The Game’ is the first single to be released and will be distributed from the UK to all top DJs around the world. It will be released on vinyl in April this year. The track, which was written, arranged and sung by Louise, has Kenny's trademark beats behind it as well as his production, which he describes as "sleaze hypnotica".

DAVE GOLDBLUM RETURNS WITH SECOND ALBUM
South African songwriter-guitarist-vocalist, Dave Goldblum, has a new
album, ‘Cape to Cairo’, coming out at the end of March 2002 (Gallo).
This versatile veteran of the Port Elizabeth and Eastern Cape folk scene released his debut album, ‘Valley Road’, back in the mid-90’s and has since performed in Switzerland, Scotland, Israel and Austria, where his original compositions were well received and his technical ability
highly praised. He has graced the stages of many popular South African
Art and music festivals over the past years and has built up a strong
underground following. He has been supported by local radio stations,
and a music video is due for release in conjunction with the launch of
the new album.

MIND ASTRAY
We’ve had some queries (band history, current plans, etc) about
Sharkbrother, the Joburg trio who released ‘Taj Mahala’, the SA Rock
Digest ‘Album of the Year’ in 2000. During 2001, two members of the
group fell in love, got married, and were last seen heading off into
Africa. So the band’s output slowed down for a while. But Cobus Rossouw, who stayed behind, assures us that there is new material and a second album slated for a late-2002 release.
In the meantime, here’s some pre-Sharkbrother info from Steve Savage,
somewhere in Zambia:
Mind Astray was the first band I recorded with in 1995. The band
comprised Julian Sun (vocals), Keenan Sun (Guitar), Craig Bennet (Drums) and Steve Savage (Bass). We played extensively at Wings in Braamfontein during its heyday, as well as various other venues. We shared the stage with bands like Damn The Icebergs, Esther's Tomcat, Sundogs, Biscuits, Urban Creep, and many more whose names have been lost in the mists of time.
An album was recorded called 'Daze Like This', with Willem Möller at
Sharp Street Studios. The album was never released for various reasons
not connected with the quality of the music. Julian went on to play with Karma in Henry Ate (http://www.karma.za.net/). Keenan emigrated to
Canada, and is currently paying with band called 'Distant Sun'
(http://www.metalforums.com/~distantsun/). Craig Bennet dropped out of
the scene. I went on to play with Sundogs and currently with
Sharkbrother (http://www.sharkbrother.co.za).
Keenan has put up a site for Mind Astray with a couple of tracks from
the album (http://www.metalforums.com/~distantsun/mindastray.html). The
name originally came from a line in a Metallica Song, but if you listen
to the music you will soon appreciate that things didn't quite work out
that way!
On another topic, I heard a pre-release of the Brixton Moord en Roof
Orkes album, 'Sperrgebied' last night and it is sounding great. It
should be released in a few months, and is something worth waiting for.

SHILOH'S CORNER
STRAWBS (fruit of the loom)

Occasionally England would return to its medieval roots like some lost and wayward pilgrim. So it would be with a progressive association called the Strawbs. The group started out as a jug-band called the Gin Bottle Four and was strongly influenced by Ewan MacColl, but changed their name to the Strawberry Hill Boys after the area where they rehearsed, Strawberry Hill Twickenham.
The Strawberry Hill Boys featured Dave Cousins and Tony Hooper as a bluegrass duet who featured regularly at the Cambridge Folk Festival in 1965. For those that frequented the London clubs like the Troubadour in Earls Court and Les Cousins in Greek Street memorable evenings are affectionately recalled by the regular patrons of those constabularies.
In 1966 they recruited double bass player Ron Chesterman for Dave's recently opened club The White Bear in Hounslow. The group officially were named Strawbs in June 1967. Due to the limited appreciation of bluegrass Dave ventured into traditional British and American folk music. The angelic Sandy Denny joined them for a few months somewhere between 1967 and '68 after which she moved on to Fairport Convention. Their debut album "All our own work" featured Denny as a guest and was released on Sonet Records in Denmark.
At this point Dave Cousins was regarded as one of the most outstanding folk guitarists in Britain. He backed Joni Mitchell on her first UK television recording, featured with the Clancy Brothers on an album and did session work with Leonard Cohen, Arlo Guthrie and Mary Travers (of Peter Paul and Mary). Strawbs became the first British group to be recorded on A&M Records (an American label, partly owned by Herb Alpert).
After the departure of Sandy Denny the group entertained vocalist Sonja Kristina for a short and uncomfortable period. Sonja finally found her niche with the progressive group Curved Air. Maintaining the acoustic vision the group released the eponymous album (1969) and "Dragon Fly" 1970. The latter of these featured a classically trained Claire Deniz on cello. A fine example of her talented ability is reflected on that rare single "Forever" which featured on the compilation album "Strawbs by choice". This was initially recorded in Copenhagen as an A-side single with "Another day" on the B-side. A worthy reflection of Claire is found on the debut album of Nick Drake. Claire's introduction to the group came through her husband, jazz/rock trumpeter Henry Lowther. "Dragon Fly"'s finest moment was written on a bleak moor in Yorkshire entitled "I turned my face into the wind".

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
PICKLED - AMERSHAM (BMG, 1996)
I enjoy the music of Amersham. I mean, I really enjoy the music of
Amersham. Not every band has such talented musicians who rock, and with
melody.
I do enjoy their music, and have bought almost their complete catalog. New band Starskii, with the singer and one of the musos from Amersham, must be worth checking out, as well.
Amersham has a fiercer guitar than The Usual, but at some moments the two bands compare favorably. Both had real singers fronting them (real singers as opposed to rock shouters), both were quartets of skilled musicians, not three guys showcasing one truly talented band member. And they both do well at the lively rock song requiring finesse not bludgeons.
This their debut CD EP has six tracks, runs seconds over twenty-three minutes, and has the hit 'Monkey' as the opening track.
The general tempo of this CD is upbeat, with a couple of songs slowing
things down for the sake of variety. 'Monkey' is an immediate sing-along, 'Birthday' has a nice spine-undulating rhythm, and the CD closes with a rollicking fun number that inspired a Scabby Annie song.
I would call this pretty rock, except that the drummer and guitarist belie that with their pure rock sensibilities and near hard-rock flairs. The earnest singing is backed by an often frenetic guitar and pushed along by a pounding backbeat, while bass pulses along, keeping the time impeccably.
Lately, I've been acquiring Amersham's back catalog a CD at a time, every One World order or so. Why? Because, as I said, I really enjoy the music of Amersham.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
Z-ASTAIRE - ROBIN AULD (Mountain Records, 1984)
My first introduction to Robin Auld was hearing the single 'Baby You've Been Good' on the radio. The song spent 9 weeks on the Radio 5 charts and reached number 8, but I never really liked the song. Even today as I listen to the 'Z-Astaire' album with this track on, I am not convinced that this a brilliant song, and with some angular sentence constructions in the lyrics, I suspect that Auld only had his learner's poetic licence when he wrote this.
Now that introduction may seem like I'm going to go on to trash the album, but I won't and that's because the rest of the album is a whole lot better than the single. The funky opener 'Cleaning up my Act' or the smoochy, smoky 'Leave Your Light On', would in my opinion, have made better singles. These songs more clearly demonstrate the talent that we know Auld to be.
What 'Baby You've Been Good' does do though, is lay down the ground rules for the album. Its mellow rock sound dominates throughout with a few excursions into reggae vibes, harder guitar led rock and warm funk. Leaning nonchalantly up against this laid back sound is the nicotine stained innocence of Auld's voice, effortlessly riding the gentle waves of sound.
But it's not all surf, sand and sun. In amongst these easygoing songs is one that lyrically stands out and is at odds with the rest. On 'Violent Stairs' he launches an attack on the apartheid propaganda that was rife in the 80's. Lines like 'They say that hate is okay, so put your love away' clearly show his dislike for the system of the day. Even the music takes on a more foreboding sound.
So despite the single probably being the weakest track, this is an album of solid laid back rock, with a touch of vitriolic politics thrown in for good measure. The relaxed sounds are unlikely to have you jumping up and dancing to 'Z-Astaire', that is unless you can find someone called Zinger Rogers.

Mealnie rediscovered the key to having a chart topper as she moved back into the top spot. The 2 Mothers on the chart were united at number's 4 and 5 with Barbra Streisand still ahead of John Lennon. The Congregation gathered at number 2, while Springwater flowed effortlessly into the number 3 slot.
Olivia Newton-John followed up her chart topping 1971 hit 'If not for you' with 'Banks of the Ohio' which eased it's way into the top 10 while The New Seekers dropped out. It was another week without local interest in the top 10.
Lower down the charts there was quite a bit of action. There was no less than 5 new entries, these coming from Nilsson, Chicory Tip, Paul Simon, Apollo 100 and South Africa's The Idiots. With their hit 'In the Park' The Idiots joined the list of 'least successful' artists whose chart history consists only of 1 week at number 20.
John Lennon's 'Imagine' exited the charts after having spent 12 weeks in the top 20, 2 of which were at the top spot. It was the 5th biggest hit of 1972 according to Top 40 magazine.

I am a keen collector of songs of the fifties and sixties. I have quite a number of South African songs on seven singles and lps. Some of these were bought way back in the sixties and their sound quality is not too good anymore. Are some of these old songs available on CD? If they are how can one get hold of them?

On Friday Burn nearly lived up to its name again, as a massive power
surge annihilated the club and most of the Umbilo area. As a result the
club had no choice but to do what it has never done before and close on
the night. Exploding tills, fridges and lights made for quite an evening and had the resident pyromaniacs in awe at the power of electricity.
After many hour’s work the next day, Burn resurrected and witnessed one
of the finest shows yet seen in this new venue in the form of Jimmy 12". The band had been quiet for some time, due to a reformation of the
line-up, and has now managed to come up with a formula that is intense.
On Monday night Burn launched its new folk club. The evening was very
successful with live appearances from Ian Henderson, Odyssey & Roly
Struckmeyer. The Folk Club opens it doors at 20h00 and costs R10 for
non-members and R5 for members.
In April Burn hosts the Regional heats of The Emerging Sounds
Competition. This competition is the country’s most respected, and
previous entrants include Jane Doe, Saron Gas, Not My Dog, Fruit Fly
Navigators, Never the Machine Forever, Sideshow, etc. The winner of the
regional heats will win three days’ recording at the local SABC and
compete in the national finals at Oppikoppi this year.
The band winning the National finals will win 10 days’ recording at RP
Studio's in Jhb under producer maestro Evert de Munnik. The regional
heats will be every Friday from the first of April and bands are
invited to contact Dave Campbell on 084-5111122 for details on entering.
