THE WONDER GIGS
- Live recordings at the SABC Beach Road Studios in Cape Town
The SABC Beach Road Studios in Sea Point, in collaboration with the
Afribeat.com website, have made their recording and performance studios
available for a series of gigs that will represent the emerging voice of Cape and South African music. This wonderful initiative will allow the musicians the space to do something for the sake of the art and not for the sake of the industry.
It's about music for the sake of music; it's about creating the space
for something to happen where there was nothing before. It's a unique
meeting point for creativity and a unique opportunity to witness the
depth and beauty, the inspirational core that our music is based on.
The music is being played for a live audience and will result in a live
recording that will be etched in the future and history of this country. And it's going to be fresh, exciting and every Saturday night at 8PM starting with...
Saturday 19th January - acoustic duo Blk Sonshine will be recording
their follow-up album to their successful self-titled debut. They've
expanded, their ideas have grown and for this record they're bringing in percussion, an upright bass and Neo will play some piano.
Saturday 26th January - Tribe, a fresh Cape Jazz quartet that
continually grows, gets more creative and gets tighter is going to use
this date to put out the debut album that captures all the talent and
spontaneity of their exciting existence.
Saturday 2nd February - there is something entirely new, a bit of a
risk, but very exciting indeed. Alex Van Heerden, trumpeter and
accordion player from Gramadoelas will be combining his ghoema spark,
jazz enthusiasm and trancey licks with the sobriety and delicacy of a
string quartet. The quartet will be led by classically trained and
Indian master-inspired Derek Gripper.
The final dates have not been confirmed yet. However, to keep you all
from fainting, let us mention that Waddy Tudor Jones of Max Normal is
going cocktail, bossa nova, sexy cheese and bond whilst Ernestine of
Moodphase 5ive is planning on continuing the beauty and subtle
spirituality that her collaboration with Brydon Bolton inspired at the
recent run of Spirit. Big funk band Gollywog is ready to let loose with
those crazy fab big-jaw riffs whilst Robbie Jansen fresh from his voyage to Cuba is looking multi-media and collaborative.
It's a collaborative platform and if there are any suggestions, queries
please feel free to contact us. This project has been set up by http://www.afribeat.com, the multi-media African music web portal. For any information and pre-booking please contact them on mailto:info@afribeat.com or at 021 4617797.

UPsideDOWN RECORDS - NEW SA LABEL
UPsideDOWN Records is a new independent record label formed by Matt
Allison, former frontman of the Cape Town based folk-pop band 'Four Days Notice'. UPsideDOWN is a label that will focus on the release of quality South African music to an international marketplace. Their focus will be on "artists that show astounding creative flair and talent and who are passionate about what they do." says Allison.
The first release on the label will be Allison's debut solo offering
called 'The Same Old Struggles' which hits stores in mid-late February
'02. The disc contains 10 tracks covering various genres and inspired by the songwriting craft of artists like David Gray, Travis and Coldplay. The album will be distributed in South Africa by Sarepta Music and both European and American releases are in the pipeline for a mid-year release.

DAVE TARR APPEAL
Many of you might recall how Dave Tarr never thinks twice about jumping
into a session or a gig with his violin; to enhance a concert, add
texture to a recording session or create magic at a festival in
countless show bands. He has been plying his fiddle/violin since 1965.
{Dave's violin skills can be heard on Wildebeest's 'Bushrock 1' CD, for example - ed}
As a Master Yachtsman/ Skipper from East London, Dave Tarr has been
known around the world as the Fiddle Skipper since the 60's. Music first - play now, pay later. Dave has played on more recordings, festivals, films and sessions than any other SAfrican violinist we know of - often free of charge.
In 2000/2001 Dave sailed over 26 000 miles delivering yachts around the
world - not to play music, but to raise funds for his wife (Stella's)
cancer treatment. This must be the first time ever that he did not take
his violin on board. We recently heard that Dave had been diagnosed with Melanoma - skin cancer - and he too is in need of urgent (expensive) treatment. As musicians we are (usually) all in the same financial boat - but collectively we could come up with the required amounts for his treatment. Now maybe it's our turn to help him.
We have subsequently had a wonderful response to our request to assist
him. Thanks to you all, it's amazing how people's generosity at times
like this can heal and spread much needed hope. Weak physically, but in
great spirits and extremely positive - due largely to the encouragement
and support from his many music friends - Dave recently visited 3rd Ear
Music to collect a Violin from Ken E Henson and Arlene. Arlene had heard that Dave was having problems with his legendary (heavy) 5 String
Barcus-Berry, so she and Ken kindly donated their own lighter 4-string
Yamaha for his trip. Another generous offer came from long-time friend
Wendy, who took a bond out on her home to loan Dave a portion of the fee for his expensive treatment.
Herewith the details of the trust account as requested. David's
treatment started on the 10th January 2002, in Johannesburg for 5/6
weeks.
All transactions will be strictly confidential & detailed summary of
deposits / donations into the Trust will be emailed to you directly. An
overall summary will be posted on the site in edition 10 (February/
March 2002).

STEVE NEWMANS 50TH BIRTHDAY PARTY!
Steven Jeffrey Roy Newman was born in Salt River, Cape Town almost fifty years ago and is now one of the most recognized and beloved South
African guitarists that we have ever produced. He turns half a century
on the 25th of January 2002 and will be celebrating his birthday after
the Aquarian Quartet (comprising himself, Tony Cox, Greg Georgiades and Syd Kitchen) complete their show in the Whale Well of the Cape Town Museum.
His brilliant band Tananas managed to capture the ears of thousands of
South Africans more used to a traditional diet of Euro/American pop, with the most intricate and groovy arrangements of simple drums, bass, acoustic nylon string guitar and the odd vocals. Tananas now perform on a world circuit and have just completed eight Womad tours. The music of Tananas is a manifestation of Steve Newman's thinking. Its rich and varied textures and rhythms, its non-conformity to anything known are all deep echoes of the man himself.
Steve lives in the Baviaan's Kloof (75 Km on dirt road from
Willowmore), an area of immense natural beauty. There, the roof over
his, his wife and three little boys heads was constructed out of reeds, a craft that goes back in that area hundreds of years and much admired by him. From music to arts and craft and on into radically alternative lifestyles, his love of all things ancient and traditional, is absolutely profound. In the 70s, one of his favourite records was by Ladysmith Black Mambazo, then utterly unknown to the white population of South Africa. Steve is a long-time vegetarian with
Yoga and meditation as part of his daily routine. He also has the most
alarmingly excellent memory and can still play and sing every old rock
tune that he used to play in the bands of his youth. He can resurrect at moments' notice any complicated arrangement of any tune that he has ever played and remember names and faces that he met once ten years ago.
Steve Newman is one of South Africa's greatest sons. He is a unique and
extremely gifted individual and over these fifty years has crafted an
identity with his guitar playing that will last in our minds for many
years to come. Catch this extraordinary guitarist live in concert with
the Aquarian Quartet on Friday the 25th January at 8pm in the Whale Well of the Cape Town Museum. Stick around after the show and say happy
birthday!

"WELCOME TO THE MACHINE" - ROGER WATERS TICKET DEBACLE
The merger between ticketing companies Computicket and TicketWeb is completed and all events are now on sale through the Computicket channels. Unfortunately, Ticketweb experienced some major system problems prior to the merger, resulting in a loss of certain sales data.
This mainly affects two of this year's biggest tours, "Spirit of the Dance" and "Roger Waters". It is therefore imperative that all members of the public who purchased tickets from TicketWeb during the month of December contact Computicket immediately to check the validity of their tickets.
Two designated numbers have been made available by Computicket in order to minimise inconvenience to patrons. If you booked tickets through TicketWeb in December please call (011) 340-8146 or (011) 340-8018 as soon as possible. This affects ticket-holders around the country who purchased tickets for these and other shows that were on sale though TicketWeb at the time.
Anyone wanting to purchase tickets for the hit Irish dance show, "Spirit of the Dance", and the Roger Waters tour should now do so at Computicket outlets.

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------
FRAGILE bonus disc - SARON GAS
'Fragile' by Saron Gas was originally released on Musketeer Records in October 2000. It was number 6 in the SA Rock Digest albums of the year for 2000. Since then Saron Gas have stormed various SA charts with songs like '69 Tea' and 'Tied My Hands'. Last week on Monday 7th January the trio flew out of Joburg International airport on their way to the USA for a recording deal with Wind-Up Entertainment... and fame & fortune (we hope!).
Recently Musketeer Records re-released 'Fragile' with a bonus 3-track CD. Their current hit single and gig-opener, the super-charged 'Gasoline' (sometimes mispelled as 'Gasolene') is the first track. Once again the boys combine hard-hitting modern rock with catchy lyrics; "she's got nothing to say, she's got bills to pay...".
The other 2 tracks on this bonus disc are both unplugged. The acoustic version of "Tied My Hands' is as strong as the album version. And Shaun Welgemoed's voice really shines through on the quietly powerful 'Senseless Tragedy'. (BC)

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------
SHILOH'S CORNER
BADFINGER (the evergreen apple)
Few would remember the acoustic finger-work behind "Here comes the sun" as featured by George Harrison at the concert for Bangladesh in 1971. Even though George gave acknowledgement to a very nervous Pete Ham, the dexterity of the Apple band Badfinger would be highly overlooked in the jaded years to come. Often cited as the shadow Beatles, the musical diversity of this talented foursome would be locked into a legal battle that resulted in the destruction of gifted and sensitive musicians that were destined for greater acknowledgement.
In 1968 a group called the Iveys (named after the Hollies) released their debut single "Maybe tomorrow". Sadly the single only appeared in Japan and on the continent. Fortune smiled on the Iveys when the Beatles formed Apple Records and signed up the group. Initially the Iveys constituted Pete Ham (lead guitar), Mike Gibbons (drums), Ron Griffiths (bass) and Dave Jenkins (rhythm guitar). The history of the group rewinds back to 1966 when the musicians backed singer David Garrick at various live and studio performances (In particular his biggest hit "Dear Mrs. Appelbee").
Just before the group signed to Apple Records, David Jenkins left and was replaced by Tom Evans. With the signing to Apple Records, the Iveys changed their name to Badfinger, sourced from the working title of "With a little help from my friends - Badfinger Boogie". A magnificent album called "Magic Christian music" was released in 1969 with the classic hit single "Come and get it" written by Paul McCartney.
One month later the film "The Magic Christian" arrived starring Peter Sellers and Ringo Starr. "Come and get it" reached #7 in the UK on the eve of Christmas in 1969. The surreal brightness of this album is reflected in the diverse array of outstanding melodies such as the magnificent "Walk out in the rain" and the prophetic "Carry on 'till tomorrow". Bonus track included "Storm in a tea cup", although included on the album, was also featured on the promotional "Walls ice cream" EP. Other Apple acts that featured on this promotional release were James Taylor and Mary Hopkin. The original "Magic Christian" UK release sported the chart busting "Something in the air" by Thunderclap Newman (which featured The Who's Pete Townshend on bass).
Many would assume that the group's link with the Fab Four created an extravagant launching pad that most would dream of. Yet if one considers the innumerable acts such as Elephant's Memory, White Trash and James Taylor, Badfinger were one of the only two Apple acts to achieve a chart career other than Mary Hopkin. For the next four years Badfinger became understated session musicians for a variety of Beatle releases which included "Imagine" by John Lennon, "It don't come easy" by Ringo Starr and the triple album by George Harrison "All things must pass". The English homeland accused them of copying the Beatles which would result in America embracing the Apple band with open arms.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
REWIND - WONDERBOOM
It's about time someone did this. And Wonderboom is composed of just the master rock musicians to do it. I'm talking about making a CD that's an homage to SA rock.
Five out of the seven tracks on 'Rewind' pay tribute to some superlative SA rock artists, Rabbitt, éVoid, Johnny Clegg, and Falling Mirror -- tracks by some great rock musicians in their own right, and write. With members from 8 Legged Groove Machine and The Electric Petals, the Wonderboom musos obviously know and love South African rock.
Wonderboom also perform a cranking guitar take on Kris Kristofferson's
melancholy 'Sunday Morning Coming Down', and do 'Kiss or Kill' by B World who, like Simple Minds, as they say, "closed for Wonderboom" on tour.
Additionally, The CD includes "Barney Simon's Shadows 2001 Remix', and lets us see a multimedia track. The multimedia track consists of rapid-fire short clips of indoor and outdoor performances, interviews, music videos, and a flurry of media articles.
You also get high quality Wonderboom music. My particular favorites are
'Shadows 2001', 'Johnny Calls the Chemist', and 'Africa'. None of these
songs are slavish covers, all come across as eclectic Wonderboom songs
written by other people. Though perhaps recorded in slight haste, the CD's songwriting and performing both sound polished, professional, and
rockworthy.
Wonderboom's 'Rewind' is a fun CD, musically and visually, and an homage to SA rock that stands on its own electric legs. And I'm glad that the somebody who had this tribute idea was Wonderboom.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
INDIGENOUS JEWELLERY - DORP
Even in this incarnation of Dorp, it is clear that you are dealing with a quirky, eclectic talent. Pieter Bezuidenhout is the only surviving member from this album in the current line up and it's his handiwork that has ensure the (relative) longevity of the group. Song titles like 'Simon Gothfunkle' and lyrics like 'Your description is the reason for my prescription' from 'Sweet Temptation' are just some examples of the wordsmith qualities of Bezuidenhout, and many more examples abound in later works (an album title of 'Five steps off the Pacemaker' being another example.) This gives the music a humour and a cleverness that sometimes leaves you say 'did I hear right, is that what he sang?' and then chuckling quietly to oneself.
Musically, the songs are spiky, funky tunes that are given a huge injection of Ska by David Poole's bouncing sax playing. The pace changes within most songs, going from manic chorus to slower reflective moments or anguished howling verse, but maintains the interest at all times. Elements of the indigenous come in with some scattered penny whistle sounds, but mostly this is music that is driven by rhythm, given a saxy body, sprinkled with some Cape Coloured 'ay-chukka-lay' sounds and rounded off by some 'ou's in the studio' vocals.
Like indigenous jewellery this is a colourful album, full of beads of wisdom and made of natural ingredients. There are no polished stones here, no rough diamonds, no hidden gems and it is certainly in no way jaded. It's just pure musical energy bouncing around a studio that has been canned is a very flat looking can (or CD to some) and distributed for your listening pleasure.

Following my review last week of David Kramer's 'Bakgat' I was sent the
following by Scherritt Knoesen:
'I asked Edi [Niederlander] about the credit for bass on 'Bakgat', about a million years ago (say, 10?) in Cape Town and she said, no Phil Schmit should have had the bass credit, she was only on electric (on the live Barleycorn side).'

SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS: 30 YEARS AGO

10 [-] I Will Return - Springwater
* South African Artists
The spell was broken, 'Mammy Blue' had lost its charisma and its
stranglehold on the top spot. Still 12 weeks at pole position is an admirable feat and even more so in that it was a local act, so congratulations to Graeme Beggs, the mastermind behind the most successful South African tune in the history of the singles charts.
So the new number 1 was 'Soley, Soley' by Middle of the Road. The song had been written by Fernando Arbex, a Spanish songwriter and was recorded at RCA's studio's in Madrid and followed up their top 5 hit 'Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum' from 1971.
Hot on Middle of the Road's heels was a certain John Lennon with a little ditty entitled 'Imagine' followed by the faith trio of local hits. For the second week running there was a new entry into the top 20 at the high position of number 10. This week it was Springwater with the instrumental 'I Will Return'. However, the song that achieved this feat the previous week (by Tony Christie) had surprisingly dropped down to number 12. Springwater's new entry came at the expense of William E's (aka Billy Forrest) 'Papa's Gonna Kiss it Better'.
South African's at number 1 this week:
Look Out, Here Comes Tomorrow - The Dealians (1971)

RODRIGUEZ: ALL THE COLD FACTS
MOTORCYCLE FUNERALS
"I've played every kind of gig there is to play now
I've played faggot bars, hooker bars, motorcycle funerals
In opera houses, concert halls, halfway houses."
-- A Most Digusting Song, Rodriguez 1971
"In 'A Most Disgusting Song' the people are like someone we all know. I think it was a depiction of a place my father played, a bar called "The Sewer" near the Detroit River, that was demolished a long time ago {In the song 'Cause' Rodriguez speaks to Jesus (his brother?) at the Sewer - ed}. One of the places that Rodriguez played, a "motorcycle funeral", was for one of Heikkis friends {Heikki is immortalized in 'Heikki's Suburban Bus Tour', but that's another story - ed}. The motorcycle club was called "The Penetrators".
-- Eva Rodriguez, October 1997
I write having found your page in memory of Rodriguez. I'm currently researching motorcycle funerals with a view to writing a book on this subject and would value any photographs, history, information on club traditions and undertakers insights. 5.RUK EN ROL
--------------
THEUNS JORDAAN

6.ROCKLINE - FORUM, REQUESTS AND FEEDBACK
-------------------------------------------
LOOKING FOR ROYALTIES
I would like to ask you for your help regarding the fate of 2 of my songs. I used to live in South Africa during the mid 80's and I had a record deal with MINC Records in Jo'burg. We recorded 2 singles in 85 but I didn't agree with the producer (Hilton Rosenthal) on the production of the 1st one, so we didn't release it. However, the 2nd single was more to my liking and it was called 'Perfect Signs'. The B side was called 'Blue Guitar'. The label was MINC and the distributor was EMI. The single became a Radio 702 'powerplay' and in 85 it was nominated for a SARI Award.
I had already left SA by this time on my way back to the UK. MINC was sold to EMI with most of the catalogue and Hilton set himself up in Los Angeles. EMI now have my 2 songs on their roster but I didn't receive royalties and I would like to make contact by e-mail with EMI SA, so that I can find out was has happened to my copyrights and if any cover versions were ever generated. MINC'S main act at that time were Juluka and Johnny Clegg. I was also friendly in those days with éVoid, Tully McCully, Bobby Angel and Zayne Adams.

8.LISTEN HERE - SA ROCK ON RADIO
---------------------------------
WORLD MUSIC RADIO
At Last! After three years of playing SA and other world music in every slot I could find on KRVM (Eugene, Oregon, USA) I finally have my own "world music" show - every Saturday from 11 - noon!
Timely as always, I received a parcel of Sheer's releases - including the incredible Mondetta - a few days ago, so will definitely be including that, as well as all the other "world" stuff that has been sent to me over the past couple of years from the likes of Sheer, Fresh, Gallo, BMG, Sony and some independent artists too.
As a matter of interest, the theme for the show (as it is called "New
World") is Mango Groove's 'New World (Beneath Our Feet)', so thanks Claire and the rest of the gang for that song!
Perhaps in time, the SA record companies will get on my little bandwagon of supporting and selling SA music in USA - you won't believe the interest here, folks! I really have tried to get CD stores details through to some of the SA record companies, but I cannot make them contact the owners! Maybe in time, people will realise there is a market here for SA music, and make the call! Here's hoping.
Regards from the drizzly Pacific Northwest..

PS: Just wanted to add a note to my earlier e-mail:
New World, my new show on Saturday mornings on KRVM Eugene, Oregon, USA, started today. Instead of a 1 hour show, it was a 2 hour, as Putumayo didn't send their show to us in time - lucky for me!
I was thrilled to be able to open with two tracks from Mondetta: "Sun" and "Yezzman", followed by Gito Baloi's "Hinkwayo" from his new "Herbs & Roots" CD - wonderful stuff, Gito! Tananas followed with 2 tracks from their "Live in Joburg" CD, and we heard "Sambanessa" and "Inhlalini". All of which received compliments from the listeners, and a hope that someone, somewhere, will get their *ss in gear and get the stuff into the stores here! (A familiar gripe of mine by now!)
Regards
Leigh
