BENGUELA CURRENTS
Benguela is a Cape Town trio comprising Alex Bozas (guitar), Brydon Bolton (bass) and Ross Campbell (drums). The group has already released one highly desirable (but not too available) live album called Sputnik on cassette and CD. Although these three members have some impressive names in their collective band experience - Urban Creep, Dynamics, Fetish, ELX, and Wildflower, to name a few - Benguelas sound is their own singular blend of trippy, rhythmic SA-world instrumental jazz-rock... so to speak!
Benguela will be launching their upcoming second album, Digital
Inability, at the CD Wherehouse on Friday 30th Nov at 6pm, and will be
appearing live, which is appropriate as Digital Inability is again a
seamless collection of new and old material as performed live over the
past year or so. The album is 59 minutes short, and has the following 13 tracks - 1. afterthought 2. rob4 3. sleepwalk 4. eastcity 5. jesus takes the cake 6. xnic 7. pink pork noise 8. bushmatic 9. hell's teeth 10. digital inability 11. ganda ganda 12. "one more and we've got them" 13. paper weight
The albums will be on sale and theres more info at

3RD EAR NEWS
There's a host of new archived photos, a few sad untimely tributes, some re-issues and a brand-new CD on the way.
Allan Pierce, Mike Smith & Dave Pollecutt have sadly left the studio...
Jazzanians are on CD at long last - That great UND Student Band that
Darius Brubeck put together in 1988. Brian Finch has finally recorded a
new album - his 10th and the first production out of Alan Judd and Terry Rosenberg's impressive and laid-back Leopard Moon Studio in Hillcrest, KZN. {I had the privilege of hearing an early pre-release of Brian's new album 'Hero For Heroes'... and it is stunning. Strong & powerful folk rock... can't wait to get my hands on a copy - ed}
On December the 9th at 6:00pm we start producing Live (acoustic mainly)
music at the Blue Bottles in the harbour - a programme of events will be announced soon.
Penguin Books will issue the Hidden Years Story - maybe in 3 phases - starting with book/part 1 in mid-2002. We aim to digitise and issue Malombo (Music of the Spirit & Dr. Malombo's historic 1976 Wits concerts), Shiyani Ngcobo, John Oakley-Smith, Colin Shamley, Clem Tholet & Guitars for Africa, among others in 2002. Then there's a host of new songs & hopefully an album by Allan Judd and Terry Rosenberg.
Then there's the Arts Funding Dilemma. Are we beggars or buskers? Should the HYMAProject survive on hand-outs? We regret that MMINO / NAC will not be contributing to the HYMAProject in 2002... so it's back on the road we go! If there are Arts & Music funders or benefactors out there who would like to consider contributing to the HYMAProject, please contact 3rd Ear Music.

JENNIFER FERGUSON: IN BETWEEN / TUSSEN IN
Having completed her annual migration between Sweden and South Africa,
Jennifer Ferguson lands in the Western Cape to present a reworked
version of her critically acclaimed Baie Lewendig in Oudtshoorn series of concerts. Her performance won her the Best Female Artist Award at the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival 2001.
The concerts consisted of an exciting fusion of sounds: Swedish
traditional songs in the modern South African idiom, Ferguson's
distinctive arrangements of traditional Afrikaanse Liedjies, some Ingrid Jonker poems alongside powerful new compositions and some of the earlier popular songs.
Her repertoire includes a distilled tribute to the late Moses Molelekwa
of their collaboration during the eighties. From the North and South and somewhere In Between/Tussen In she brings with her a collection of new songs. Jennifer has recently been chosen as one of the first composers to be inducted in the new Sarral Composers Hall of Fame. The award ceremony takes place on the 27th of November at the Civic Theatre in Johannesburg.
See Jennifer performing Upstairs@the River Club on Friday 30 Nov & Sat 1 Dec.

BEDROCK
Well, as some of you know, The Band In The Sand staged their Western Cape debut at Pieter-Dirk Uys' Evita Se Peron in Darling recently and what a Hot November Night (and occasion) it turned out to be. Not even the rugby Test match between South Africa & France could draw people away - and the few that were ended up regretting it. Sorry, guys, we warned you that Bedrock would perform better than the Bokke - and we did! Read all about our experiences in the DIARY page of our website http://www.bedrockband.com
Our latest CD "Recovery" has been enjoying really brisk sales thanks to the independent South African music industry. We have thrived on the back of some great support, especially from the folk at the SA Rock Digest. It's largely thanks to them that the opening track of our CD, "Rock 'n Roll Man", sat in the Top 20 of top South African songs in September/October of this year. If you are unfamiliar with this crew please visit their site at http://www.cd.co.za for write-ups and reviews on Bedrock and their activities. Our CD is also carried on the OneWorld internet music shopping site at http://www.oneworld.co.za.
Thanks, also, to Sugar & Bruce Millar for the very positive exposure they have given us, Namdeb and Oranjemund on the "Rock Slot" of Bruce's Wednesday morning music show on SAFM. Similar thanks, also, to those radio stations who have seen it fit to give our material airplay, including our friends in Windhoek. We have recovered our costs on the first CD and are now busy writing for next year's release which will really "blow your socks off". (We'll try to release it in summer so your feet don't get cold!). I'm afraid I cannot say any more than that!
We would really appreciate it if you folks, when you're out doing your music shopping, would ask your local music store manager if he stocks RECOVERY by BEDROCK. This is one small way which we can spread our name around the retail trade as our direct approaches have met up with the usual lack of enthusiasm one expects from the local formal music sector.
This is the busy time of the year (as usual) and we're on the road. Our next out-of-town gig will be in Luderitz on the night of Friday, 30 November, where we will be rockin' RUMOURS PUB & RESTAURANT in the Kapp's Hotel building. If you wanna have a night of real, live, down-to-earth fun and rock be there. You won't regret it.
For our Oranjemund supporters, we will be playing the following afternoon, 1 December, at Don Esteban.
Finally, thanks once again for all your support. As long as you folk are out there to encourage us, we'll keep doing it.
Cheers
Pete, Kenny, Mike & Eddie

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------
TAMARA DEY - ...THE FIRST LADY
This is a strangely addictive release. Its the five-song debut EP from
Tamara Dey, Gallos new dance-pop bright hope, and its quite an
intriguing package all round. The cover has Tamara looking like a dusky
Jackie O, singing into an old microphone, and looking very exotic in her evening dress and fur wrap, elbow-length white gloves and long string of pearls flying. So the slick and soulful kwaito-brushed house grooves on this EP come as some surprise. This (First) lady can rock!
Theres Belgian, Italian and South African in the young Ms Deys
background, and a musical lineage, knowledge and training that has left
her ready to take her music to a wide audience. This album was produced
by Alexis Faku, Mandla, and Pepsi. It was Pepsi who first spotted and
contracted Tamara to sing in his clubs. Appearances on SATV (Ziwa Mo), on the new Brothers Of Peace album and tour, and on the e-tv soapie 'Backstage', brought her into the public eye, and songs off this fresh and funky EP are already getting plenty of radio play. Choose Life is a duet with Lebo Mathosa, and there is also the TV Mix of the hit Woman as performed by Fly Divas.
The Fly Divas was the name given to the trio comprising Tamara, Lebo and Bongo Maffins Thandiswa, who were commissioned to write and perform a song for the Womans Day celebrations. The other songs on /...The First Lady are What Am I To Do, Deeper, and Just Maybe. A stunning debut!. (SS)
-----------------
VARIOUS - EVE, WOMEN IN THE GARDEN OF SONG
Luna Pieterse, the new SA singing talent who performed at the CD
Wherehouse last weekend, is just one of the voices to be heard on this
new collection of SA singers. Alongside Luna one can hear a selection of tracks from Lesley Rae Dowling, Eugenie, Nicole Holm, and Laurinda
Hofmeyer. These recordings were made during some short sessions over a
few months at Sunset Studios, with each of these artists contributing
their own time and songs.
The title of the album was chosen to indicate the intimate and delicate
personal and feminine flavour of the song writing. The percussion on the album, by master drummer, Barry van Zyl, lends a distinct world beat of African grooves to the production. Schalck Joubert, on bass, makes up this sterling rhythm section.

A-LIVE - TARA FATAAR
Privately released cassette of 1996 live concert recording, by Flames guitarists daughter.
by Bas Möllenkramer
http://www.the-flames.com
Most readers of the SA Rock Digest will know the Flames, the sixties Durban soul band who made it to number one with their stunning For Your Precious Love and who delivered a brace of magnificent soul albums. Now the next generation of Flames offspring stands poised to carve their own personal artistic niche. Tara Fataar is the daughter of Durbans Steve Fataar, spiritual leader of the Flames and their guitarist and sometime lead vocalist.
In 1996 her live concert recording was distributed on cassette, to a limited group of fans and curious listeners. So why review Tara Fataars recording here? Because this young lady has immense potential to become a major star. Then you can say you knew about her before she was famous! And you heard it here first.
On this live recording Tara Fataar is backed by the Fantasy Band, consisting of Craig Nash on drums, John Randall on bass, John Ellis on guitar and finally Taras dad Steve Fataar on guitar.
The 11 songs presented here are from a variety of sources. The Cranberries 'Zombie' starts the set off. Alanis Morissette is represented no less than three times, and The Flames 'Dove' from their 1971 Carl Wilson produced album is included, albeit with a slightly shaky vocal. Tara Fataar also sings her own composition 'Alive and Living'. Led Zeppelins 'Dyer Maker' provides an interesting rhythmic challenge.
Tara Fataars vocal delivery, fronting a sympathetic band, varies from brash self-confidence to shaky insecurity. This is surely a young artist still developing and searching for direction and attitude. Most live perfomers will have experienced the difficulty of keeping the audiences attention. While listening to this show you get a sense that Tara is learning her craft, and has presented her mid-term exam as testimony.
But just when youre wondering where this show will go next, a solid gold moment happens which absolutely sets Tara Fataar aside from the mainstream for all time. Despite her apparent youthfulness and inexperience she throws caution resolutely aside and launches into an intensely gripping and vulnerable solo vocal delivery of Alanis Morissettes 'Your House'. The effect on the listener is to be pulled from your comfortable if distant listening chair, right up on stage and become a part of Taras dream world, willing or no. The personal nature of the lyrics only intensifies the hypnotic effect. It is a moment of pure musical magic.
Without doubt, this is where Tara Fataars future as a performer lies. Her ability to transport her listener into an almost hypnotic trance will determine her careers next turn. This album is therefore indispensable to all readers who enjoy viewing an artists career in its entirety. This is Tara Fataars first step to stardom.

FOCUS ON NEW SA BANDS - Tidal Waves
If you thought Reggae was dead - think again. It's going strong - and
growing - thanks to the talents of musicians like the foursome in Tidal
Waves. Sweeping into Johannesburg from the NorthWest like a storm of
African dust, came the musicians who were later to form Tidal Waves - a
band still passionately true to their roots, and the Rasta message.
When the reggae wave of the early 80s swept through the world, the
message penetrated even the arid townships of the old Western Transvaal. In Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom and Stilfontein, teenagers with music in their blood were doing everything it took to form bands and make their music. Years later, they had perfected their craft, shaken the red dust of the NorthWest off their boots and drifted to the cultural melting pot of Yeoville. And Tidal Waves was born.
Tidal Waves features Jacob "Zakes" Wulana (36) on vocals and guitar,
Sonnyboy "Mahlangu" Tshotetsi (36) on bass, Samuel "Jumbo" Shoi (32) on
drums and vocals and Reuben "Andile" Faku (32) on keyboard. Wulana and Shoi were instrumental in forming the band, having grown up in the same townships in the early 80's. They write the music and lyrics for the band, and are still deeply committed to the message they convey. "The Rasta message has always been one of peace and brotherhood," they point out. "In South Africa, this is a sentiment we need now more than ever."
Their first CD, Hard Work (BMG Records Africa), was released in 2000.
Featuring tracks such as Hard Work, Bing Bong, Khoteyg ina YoVille and Tink Bout Tings, the album calls for an end to urban crime and violence and speaks of love and brotherhood. It's relevant stuff, speaking from the heart of Johannesburg. And the music is still reaching people of all ages. "We have a great response from our audiences," they say. "When we play at concerts like Oppikoppi, people of all races and all ages get up to dance, and buy out our CDs."
Catch Tidal Waves at a gig near you soon.

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------
SHILOH'S CORNER
JOE SOUTH - the honest sound
When it came to originality and downside Southern grit, Joe South stands tall and prophetic in the rising slipstream of the hippies. During his early years he featured with a country group headed by steel guitarist, Pete Drake. He made his debut on the Atlanta radio show case "Georgia Jubilee" in 1957 with a range of country originals that were never applied to wax. Joe's strong interest in electronics and communications would lead him to build his own radio station with financial assistance from a renowned DJ, Bill Lowery.
When Bill Lowery set up his own music publishing and recording company, NRC Music, Joe was the first to sign. His first hit "The Purple people eater meets the witchdoctor" written by J.P. Richardson (the Big Bopper), smacked the charts at #47 in 1958. The follow-up regional hit, "I'm snowed" gave the magnetism to Lowery which resulted in a host of artists joining the fold (Billy Joe Royal, Ray Stevens and Tommy Roe). Joe's talent as an acoustic rhythm guitarist became sought after in the Nashville circles. Coupled with his astute song writing, he would forge a profitable career as an understated session song writing power behind the scenes.
In 1962 Joe wrote and produced the soul driven "Untie me" for an R&B quintet called the Tams. Under the management of Bill Lowery it reached #12 in 1962. Then the river started to flow with rapid results. Billy Joe Royal reached #9 with "Down in the Boondocks" (whatever that meant?) in the summer of '65. Across the waters Deep Purple released his urgent rhythmic ballad "Hush" which lavished at #4 in the US in 1968. This was Deep Purple's chart debut and breakthrough into the American charts. Joe's session work (rhythm guitar) was highly varied, from the 1966 "Sounds of Silence" (Simon and Garfunkel) to Bob Dylan's "Blonde on blonde".
Providing the steel backbone for artists such as Wilson Pickett, Fats Domino, Marty Robbins and Conway Twitty, the classic Joe South guitar lick trade mark became a must for every rising star. Thanks to Aretha Franklin's "Chain of fools" with Joe's opening guitar lick, he became one of the most highly paid session musicians in Muscle Shoals. Billy Joe Royal first coined the phrase "The Joe South sound" and eventually his efforts were rewarded when he earned the music industry's highest award for song writer by receiving two Grammys in 1969 for his song "Games people play" (Song of the year and Best contemporary song). To place the cherry on the cake, a third Grammy came, courtesy of an instrumental version by the immortal King Curtis (Best R&B instrumental performance).
Joe's universal plea for tolerance resulted in the very hip "Walk a mile in my shoes" which became a concert standard for Elvis Presley. By 1968 he became a regular on major network television shows, often featured with future Beach Boy and country guitarist Glen Campbell. By 1970 the river was overflowing, "Rose Garden" by Lyn Anderson went gold, the Osmonds would achieve great success with "How can I unlove you", "Fool me", "Yo-yo" and "I knew you when".
During the mid seventies drugs and the tragic suicide of his brother Tommy, resulted in Joe going into seclusion in the jungles of Maui for at least four years. Eventually the sadness would end as the river flowed into the sea with a reborn Joe returning to Georgia with a wife and newborn son. A magnificent album called "Midnight rainbows" was released in 1975 and Joe would find his peace amidst the games that people played. In 1994 he performed at the Bottom Line in New York City alongside Pete Seeger and the Byrds. Roger McGuinn described him as a humble man with little to say and a lot to sing.

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
EIGHT FAVOURITE SA ROCK SONGS
I know, the rock traditions of singing about girls, love, breaking up-making up, girls, partying, driving around, and girls are more important than anything else in the world, but there are some songs that don't concern only girls that have some merit, as well. Honest.
The following songs are in no order. They are not my top favorite eight
songs, but eight out of hundreds from my imaginary 12CD box set sampler of the Best of South African Rock.
'The Homecoming' by Freedom's Children -- The chain-swinging instrumental rhythm these guys get into before Colin displays his virtuosity on the drums is astounding. It's about the heaviest, coolest, and deadliest three minutes I've ever heard in rock. Then there's the other 14 minutes of living rock....
'Bury the Body' by Squeal -- Lean, muscular, and tirelessly loping rock. I get a kick out of the expression Birch uses to suggest he is disappointed in a friend's behavior. We Americans sometimes use the word "buddy" in a similar expression.
'Paradise In Summertime' -- by Just Jinger. In the music of my people, rock music, are sub-genres with long and noble traditions (eg, make-out songs, cruising songs, unrequited love songs). The summer song about freedom, fun, and girls, girls, girls, is such a tradition. This song is as joyous a summer song one will find in any country whose shores are kissed by oceans...
'Mad Hatters' -- by Henry Ate. This song careens along with an urgent,
driving rock beat. It gets stuck in one's head, but one does not want to kick it out for eating crackers, or biscuits. Hi Karma, invite me over for tea (though I live more than a scone's throw away) -- I won't natter on like the guy in the song, honest!
'Weeping' by Bright Blue -- This is a great rock song even though it doesn't slam the drums under a sinister guitar. Call it what you will, pop, vocal, rock, non-traditional ballad, it's also a brilliantly written parable bigger than its primary South African theme.
'Buccaneer' -- by McCully Workshop. A big wall o' sound rock song, with an even bigger sound on the McCully Workshop 'Buccaneer' CD. Both versions are required listening. In an attempt to keep the term fresh and meaningful, I reserve a reviewer's otherwise hackneyed phrase for this song only: 'Buccaneer' is a killer rock tune.
'ZX Dan' -- by Radio Rats. I just love these wild lyrics! "From pole to
shining pole your world transmits rock 'n' roll....". A pure rock song: teenaged girl, rock 'n' roll, incredible lyrics, and a distinctive (shall we say) singer.
'The Sound of Silence' by The Awakening -- Now here's a version of this
classic song that delivers the dark lyrics in the ominous and portentious tones that they themselves summon. Atmosphere so thick you can serve it on a plate. Also, how Paul himself dreams of singing it, in leather pants.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
TAKE WHAT YOU WANT - FLASH HARRY
During the early 80's a milkman's son and a couple of his mates started
playing what was termed white man's reggae. Sting and the Police went on to become one of the biggest bands in the world in the mid 80's with this sound. In South Africa, Keith Berel (not sure what his father's profession was) and some mates (including Fred Knowles who had played with early versions of the Climax Chicago Blues Band) started playing white South African reggae. Flash Harry went on to become another in a growing list of great SA bands who few remember today. Now where's the justice in that.
'Take What You Want' was FH's second album and contains 11 strong tracks of edgy punk-tinged reggae and reggae-tinged rock featuring some masterful guitar work (by Berel) and astute lyrics (also by Berel). From the bouncy 'New Girl' to the punky 'Down at Marlene's' this album will have you nodding appreciatively and tapping your feet. But it's not all bopping and good times. While the tunes are uplifting, the lyrics are generally of a more serious nature.
Opening track 'Going Straight' is a good example starting with the phrase 'Stay off the left side, Keep off the right - Going Straight'. On the surface it's a song about a man living an average life, but the obvious deeper meaning of not questioning things (particularly in apartheid South Africa) is quite blatant. This is re-enforced with the line 'I depend on the news, My wife makes me breakfast, and the boy shines my shoes'. And that's just one example. 'Toe the Line' and 'Television' contain further evidence of great lyrics.
After the demise of Flash Harry, Berel went on to release the highly rated, but hardly know 'Far Cry' under the guise of Carte Blanche and this, along with the 2 Flash Harry albums ('Going Straight' and 'Take What You Can') showcase the undoubtable songwriting skills of Berel.
As 'Take What You Want' was released during the height of apartheid, I would be loathe to say that Flash Harry were The Police of South Africa. Even if apartheid hadn't happened, I would still be loathe to say that as, despite also playing white reggae, Flash Harry were not Police clones. They stamp their own sound on the album and don't sound derived. This strong second (and final) album from Flash Harry is a little masterpiece that demands a hearing. As the History of Contemporary Music of South Africa puts it, 'The songs are
not there to be merely listened to, but to be explored.'

Frank Sinatra's daughter Nancy teamed up with Lee Hazelwood to crack the top 10 with 'Did you Ever' and Tommy Roe was the other new entry in the top 10.
The Sweet's top 10 run which had begun on 11 June with 'Funny Funny' finally ended 25 weeks later as 'Co Co' dropped from 10 to 17. Groep Twee was the other casualty from the top 10.
SA's Dave Mills and Les Crane (real name Lester Stein) from the US were the new entries into the top 20.

DID YOU KNOW?
Watershed's 'Indigo Girl' has been receiving a lot of airplay in SA over recent months and went to number 3 on the SA Rock Digest song charts, but did you know that the Indigo Girls from USA recorded a song called 'Watershed' on their 1990 album 'Nomads, Indians, Saints'?
Thanks to Glen du Toit for spotting this strange co-incidence... or is it?

GIVE US A RING-OU
Hey we're looking for a decent drummer who is ready for gigs, has own
equipment and is committed. we are into punk/alternative rock. the
drummer must be able to make up his own stuff, be able to practise long
and hard. We (guitarist and bassist) are 17 years old so if the drummer
is around our age it would help. We wanna start playing from around
December. If you could help us find someone we would be extremely
grateful
you can contact me either at 011 884 7055 or email me at
mailto:james1@webmail.co.za

GEORG VOROS
Hi, this is Georg Voros (ex-éVoid, Neil Solomon blah blah...) from London. As a drummer and endorsee of Sabian Cymbals in the UK I've hit upon a great idea. After speaking to a few drummers recently in SA, I've had the idea of organising a Sabian day in Jo'burg featuring three name SA drummers and three international drummers (Dom Famularo and others). Pretty much like the Zildjian days in New York, London etc. If it comes off it should be a blast.
To look at it seriously I need to show Sabian in the UK (and USA) that there is serious interest, and that it would be well attended - I've no doubt that it will, I just need... shall we say a little evidence. So the best way is for people to send me reply emails stating that they think its a great idea and that they would attend. Ideally, I would like to have around 100 emails. I can then present this to Sabian over here and proceed from there. Also, would it work in Cape Town as well? So you need to tell me where you are, and where you would like to see this happen. But it ain't gonna happen in Blikkiesfontein!
Maybe those in contact with Bennie at TOMS music shop (JHB) and similar can let them know about this and anyone else that you can think of who could spread the word, so we can set the wheels rolling. So send me your mail now at mailto:voros@georgvoros.com. And.... oh yes, I will be playing as well.
Georg Voros

7.ROCK ON - LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
--------------------------------------
PEREZ LIVE @ MILLERS
To most music fans across the country, Perez are a band which quite
simply, needs no introduction. Their blend of melodic hard rock has
been holding audiences across the country spellbound, and their single
Wasted Out, which has received extensive daytime airplay, has had
people from all walks of life humming along. ("and the music makes you
scream a little").
Perez are Nic Olsen on vocals and guitar, Matt Wilkinson on vocals and
guitar, Adam Connor on vocals and bass, and Mike Goddard on vocals and
drums. Having all been in very successful bands previously, the members
were already well acquainted by the time of their conception in early
2001. One unfortunate outcome of this is that Perez has too often been
compared to the members previous bands, and seen as little more than an amalgamation of the three (Wilkinson and Goddard-Pistolfish, Olsen-Jimmy 12 inch, Connor-Ichabod). However, they have from very early on proved that Perez are something very different.
Perez recently played a gig alongside PMB locals Phatlip, as well as
Gautengers, The Diesel Whores at Millers (PMB). Unfortunately, the event was plagued with sound problems (2 blown tweeters, thereby giving the PA the clarity of Roy Orbison singing from the inside of a coffee tin), resulting in the performance being halted three times in order for things to be sorted out. Still, the crowds (one of the biggest and most enthusiastic the venue has seen in a long time) were kept on their feet, and the band had to politely decline a second encore.
With the unfortunate break-up of Sugardrive earlier this year, and more
recently that of the Nude Girls', as well as the eminent departure of
Saron Gas for greener pastures overseas, there is definitely going to be something of a vacuum in the local music scene. Perhaps the right time for a fresh young band to really make their mark? Perez are currently busy in the studio along with David Birch, and the release of a full length CD is planned for December this year. (Their demo EP is available at most of their live performances.)

SARON GAS TRIBUTE CONCERT
Their debut gig was at the Nile Crocodile in Lynnwood, Pretoria. Their
second, third and fourth gigs culminated in the finals of the third
season of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition. Since then this
trio have toured the country, had a number one hit on 5FM, released a CD and in 2002 head off to the USA on a seven album deal. So it seems
fitting that Emerging Sounds host a Saron Gas Tribute Concert at the
Nile Crocodile on Saturday, December 1.
In action are five Pretoria bands plus one Johannesburg band - Cutting
Jade, Rhutz, Syrup, Almost There, Dunnaway and Critical Deceit. Each
band will as part of their set perform one Saron Gas track, but in their own style. Expect a Saron Gas medley from Cutting Jade; Fine Again by Critical Deceit; Take Me Away from Syrup, Your Bore by Rhutz; Beer by Almost There and 69 Tea from Dunnaway.
First band is on stage at 20:30 with the last band starting its
performance just after midnight. Entrance fee is R30 per person and
during the course of the evening there will be lots of give-aways. The
members of Saron Gas will also be present to party with their friends
and fans alike. The band will not be performing on the night but will
mingle with patrons at the venue which gave them the opportunity of
making their debut.
Tickets are available from the six bands performing or at the venue on
the night. For further information contact Simon "Squire" Foulds on 082 770 7524. http://www.sasounds.com

GET YOUR OAR IN FAST FOR THE SAVANNA UP THE CREEK 2002
As all SA Rock Digest readers probably know, February is Up The Creek
time, which means that right about now, it is being finalised and booked and gotten ready to fly.
Chameleon Indabas, who organise the fest would like to bring to the
attention of such stalwart supporters of SA music the fact that, not
only are tickets limited to 600 units this year, but that the price has
gone up to R295.00 per head. However, there are 200 early
bird tickets available at a cheaper rate whereby those of you who are
really keen can already secure yourselves a piece of the action.
These tickets will be sold on a first come first served basis at
R245.00. Once these are all gone, the remaining 400 will be sold at
R295.00 per head for adults. Kids under twelve get in for free. Email
sueh@felix.co.za or phone 021 6714360.to book your place in the sun!
The changes are due to a survey of festivalgoers sentiment, which
revealed that most enjoyed the smaller, more intimate winter festivals.
Thus The Savanna Up The Creek 2002 will bring you a more relaxed,
intimate and enjoyable festival than ever before. The
big lapa and stage are a thing of the past, with the stage now being
situated on the porch next to the bar as in years gone by. Headliners
for the festival include the likes of Valiant Swart, Watershed, Sons of
Trout, Moodphase5ive, Bill Knight, Delta Blue, Breakfast Included; Marc Maingard; and Frosted Orange.
The website http://upthecreek.mweb.co.za is being updated as we speak,
and you can visit that for more information as well as a complete
line-up. Watch this space for more details. Please note that booking of
bands is complete and the line-up is confirmed.

ROCK ART CAFE, OUDTSHOORN
The Rock Art Café in Oudtshoorn is, apart from being "die lekkerste kuierplek in die Klein Karoo", the only significant live music venue in the region. It draws a steady audience of live music fans throughout the year, but offers peak exposure to performers during the annual kunstefees, when many thousands of eager music addicts from across the country literally storm the premises. Rock Arts policy is to promote original local music, as opposed to cover bands, and, in particular, to offer opportunities for up-and-coming artists to "test the water", although we continue to welcome more established artists. Some of
the better-known musicians who have performed at Rock Art include: Anton Goosen, Theuns Jordaan, Akkedis, Spinnekop, Beeskraal, Blues Broers, Boulevard Blues Band, Duusman, Delta Blue, Frosted Orange, Jesse Jordan Band, Robin Auld, Semisane, Valiant Swart, Karen Zoid, and Zen Arcade.
