SAMA AWARDS - ENTRIES OPEN
The 8th Annual Standard Bank South African Music Awards (SAMA) will be
taking place in April 2002. The Recording Industry of South Africa
(RISA) is proud to announce that entries for next years awards are open to any artist who has been resident in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana or Namibia for the last six months, provided the recording was done and released in South Africa. The awards provide artists with the opportunity to be judged by their professional peers.
The 8th SAMAs will see the inclusion of two new public vote categories, namely: Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. The public will be invited to vote for the winners in these categories as we get closer to the event. These categories have been included in order that the greater South African public can feel part of the voting process for two very sought-after awards. An independent panel of judges appointed by the Standard Bank SAMA Steering Committee will judge the awards.
The process for the Standard Bank SAMA Awards is threefold - firstly
record companies must submit their nominee, secondly, they will be
judged by over 100 professionals in the industry; and finally, the top
five artists in each category will contest for top honours at the finals in April. Entries are open to both RISA and non-RISA members.
All interested parties are invited to submit their entry forms to the
RISA offices in Randburg. Entry forms are available from RISA, Suite 1,
150 Hendrik Verwoerd Drive, Randburg. Entries must reach the RISA
offices before the 23rd of November at 12:00 midday (incomplete,
incorrect or late entries will not be accepted).
Entry forms are also available on the RISA website
http://www.risa.org.za, which should be completed, signed and returned
as soon as possible. For more information contact either Wilma De Villiers or Nono Suntele on tel (011) 886-1342 or fax (011) 886-4169.
The total number of categories will be announced soon, so watch this
space for details.

EMINENT CHILD NEWS
Eminent Child is at present working on songs for the 3rd full album.
They hope to record early next year and have an album ready for the
European summer 2002. Beautiful View looks set to be a popular track
on that album, judging by the response they get every time they play it! They are testing the material live at 'Tobie Joes in Port Elizabeth on Sunday evenings over this festive season and will also be playing at a large summer camp in Kimberley (N Cape - South Africa) over a week in December. Then down to Cape Town for a short tour and back to PE to start preparations for recording.
The South African based Eminent Child site is now up and running. Take a look at http://www.eminentchild.com. Of course the ever-popular

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------
FOCUS ON NEW SA BANDS - STARSKII
Author: Charne Jones
Simply put, Starskii is a hybrid of ideas resulting from two of the most accomplished musicians in South Africa, and has carefully and
unpretentiously been tailored to fit the most elaborate of tastes.
Formed in 2001, the founding members of Starskii are hardly strangers to the music scene. Adam Lomas and Nathan Waywell were both previously part of Amersham, and have thus had the opportunity to lace their musical talent with invaluable experience. Starskii is a shift in their musical pattern and upon first introduction sets the criteria for success in a toughened industry.
Starskii's debut album, Communate, is Adam and Nathan at their most
comfortable. The concept can be likened to a lyrical storybook
illustrated in melody and metaphor, and it's clear that both musicians
have (as Starskii and as individuals) found their feet in the new
project.
Two certain highlights on Communate are the extreme 'Did You See It
Coming?' and the ballad-inspired 'Ecstasy' where Lomas reminds us that
he has his self-penned lyrics down to a vocal science. The songs blur
genre edges and have both indefinite acoustic and live performance
potential, while the album promises to deliver interesting and
unexpected aural results. Starskii's sound is lyrically solid, and sells itself in an inheritance of passion. Keep a subtle eye on the Starskii arrival, and follow the militant take-over on http://www.starskii.com

SUCK - TIME TO SUCK
This hard rocking band was regarded as a musical menace to the SA
society of the 70s with their anarchistic assault on the minds and
eardrums of the day. Now their only full album has been given a
long-awaited re-release on Benjy Mudies RetroFresh label with full
liner notes by Leon "Dinosaur Days" Economides.

NIANELL - WHO PAINTED THE MOON?
Nianell is a Namibian born-and-raised artiste. She has written and
recorded three albums to date, showcasing the exceptional quality and
control of her 3½ octave voice. Her song-writing capabilities and
proficiency on guitar and piano / keyboard merge to create outstanding
live and recorded performances.
With a performing career spanning a decade, shes had some notable high
points - including being chosen to perform for Mr Nobel of Nobel Peace
Prize fame {Surely one of his descendants rather? - ed}. She performed
to great success in Ireland, Belgium and France in early 1999, and her
dynamic performance at The Majestic Hotel during Midem 2000
[International Music Trade Festival hosted annually in Cannes, France]
led to an equally successful performance at Forte Riga. Festival
representatives witnessed the performance and invited Nianell to the
Latvian festival held annually in Riga. Nianell currently performs
regularly in neighbouring countries, including Botswana, Zimbabwe and
Namibia. She also appears weekly at Johannesburgs top international
hotels, performing her own music to an international audience.
2001 has seen the completion of Who Painted the Moon?, Nianells most
ambitious project to date. This full-length album, produced by industry
legend Mauritz Lotz, is a moving and inspiring album. Opening with the
track As One, the album is a journey into Nianells heart and soul,
exposing deep emotion through the vehicle of beautiful melody. From the
moving Who Painted The Moon, written during a lunar eclipse, to the
exquisite Just For Tonight, the album leads its audience into a world
of spiritual bliss. The uplifting Have Faith reaffirms the need for
trust, respect and belief in life and love through an up-tempo and
inspiring beat.
Nianell also has as one of her long-term objectives to discover and
promote new talent from Southern Africa. In 1999 she launched Nia
Enterprises Limited. The company was registered for the purpose of
launching her international career and then to help other very talented
artists in Africa to do the same.

BRIGHT BLUE ARE BACK - THE FULL STORY
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/brightblue
Anyone who has been following the career of seminal South African band,
Bright Blue, for the past 17 or so years, will know that its entirely
appropriate that the release of their long-awaited retrospective set
comes with the title, Every Now And Then (The Best So Far: 1984 -
2001). For everything about Bright Blue has always been fluidity; about blurring the edges of what is expected of a band in the conventional sense ("We release music sporadically and intend doing it forever" announce the band) and, of course, extending that into their music which wholeheartedly defied the boundaries of the time becoming a forerunner of the "rainbow nation" sound.
With a name that reflected the paradox of being bright in a very blue
time {actually, it was also a tribute to Chelsea FC - Sporting Ed.},
Bright Blue created a sound that - through recordings and a raucously
rocking live show - organically fused the lilt and lurch of township
jive and the harmonies and rhythms of mbaqanga with a solid rock
musicality and smatterings of pop.
Whats more, the band - at first brothers Peter and Ian Cohen, Tom Fox
and Robin Levetan (now a Cape Town-based architect) and Dan Heymann - flew the flag of protest and liberation in astute songs about the contradictions of a life of white privilege that were, on first experience, uplifting and positive (perfectly matching the bands paradoxical name). This was no mean feat in apartheids final, dark decade which was marked by the apartheid regimes unrelenting oppressiveness; the spectre of an uncertain future; war raging in the townships; and a military call-up that many white youths found morally reprehensible.
And although a handful of other groups dipped into South Africas
broader musical well, few did it with such infectious results and quite in the winning way that Bright Blue managed. This they achieved by unleashing several fine recordings (among them two full albums, Bright Blue and The Rising Tide- both still unavailable on CD) gaining some significant radio play (with tracks like Window On The World, Weeping and Second Avenue) and moving from campus to campus, club to club, bringing their live show to staunch fans all over the country.
A mid-80s shift to Johannesburg pushed Bright Blue to new heights and
greater exposure. Reflecting on the time, Ian Cohen said: "Moving to
Joburg felt like we had arrived in New York City - we were real small town boys in the big smoke. But it gave us a chance to be amongst and play with some great musicians." Among these were Louis Mhlanga, Simmi Zeko, and Sipho (Scorpion) Mandono, all of whom added to the unique sonic swirl that Bright Blue crafted.
The bands strong connection to the anti-apartheid movement of the time
is evidenced by the song Weeping, which was penned by Dan Heymann
(although in typical Bright Blue democratic style, they are all formally credited with its composition). As Heymann recalls: "In 1986, responding to the Apartheid Governments clamp-down on the media, I wrote the words of Weeping, over a piece of music I had composed more than a year earlier, while I was stuck in the Army".
The song was originally recorded in 1987, at Orange 338 Studio in Orange Grove, Johannesburg, by Phil Audoire and Daved Moloele. In a mad burst of creativity, Bright Blue recorded two songs in one night (Yesterday Night being the second) pausing only at about 2am to dash off to the Market Theatre to pick up the late Basil Coetzee to blow his magnificent horn on this track.
At that time without a deal (the first album, Bright Blue, was the
extent of their recordings for Trutone, though an EMI deal was soon to
follow), the group pressed up 500 vinyl singles, featuring a black and
white cover shot of Bright Blue sitting outside the Imperial Café in
Cape Town. Astonishingly, Weeping soon made it onto the national
airwaves, despite the fact that it quite clearly contained a section of
Nkosi Sikelel IAfrika, which was then banned by the Nationalist Party government.
Weeping has been extensively covered since then, most notably by the
Soweto String Quartet and Vusi Mahlasela. A particularly poignant moment for Bright Blue was playing the song live at a Mitchells Plain concert for returning exiles, attended by former President Nelson Mandela soon after his release from prison in 1990.
To date however, the only Bright Blue material available on CD (besides
Weeping being included on many SA compilations), was the Open Your
Eyes CD single from 1996. Which makes the release of Every Now And
Then (The Best So Far: 1984 - 2001) such a welcome event for Bright
Blue fans. The compilation includes songs like Whos The Enemy, The
Rising Tide (a tribute to jailed SA conscientious objector David
Bruce), Living In Africa, Yesterday Night, Window On The World
and, of course, Weeping.
The album also features two new tracks, World Turns and Can You Feel
It. World Turns, is vintage Bright Blue, with just enough sonic
twists and threads to ensure the track resides firmly in the 21st
century musical terrain. Penned jointly by the groups remaining three
active members (Ian and Peter Cohen and Tom Fox), World Turns pivots
on Foxs distinctive yet subtle mbaqanga-influenced guitar piece and the chilled rhythm section provided by the Cohen brothers. But the musical ante is upped by the inspired use of gorgeous, jazz-influenced keyboards (played by Mark Goliath) and some elegant sampling.
Can You Feel It is as joyous a new slice of sound as you will hear
emanating from South Africa this year. Fast moving and showcasing Bright Blues feel for a groove and a blasting horn section, this is uplifting stuff that proves just how relevant the group still is today. Adding to the quality of the new material is the input of life-long friend and colleague Johan Griesel (who has been handling live sound for the likes of Steve Winwood and Jeff Beck recently) who assisted Bright Blue in mixing the two new songs.
The 1990s saw Bright Blue moving in a new direction as the political
situation in South Africa changed. After a decade of writing,
practising, recording and touring, Bright Blue became a looser set-up,
with the band members engaged in other pursuits. Peter Cohen worked with Mango Groove, and Tom Fox, alongside James Stewart, Yoyo Buys and Paul Tizzard, produced some excellent BB-influenced sounds (and three strong albums) with Cape Town band, The Usual.
But Bright Blue never "broke up" as such, and we can expect even more
musical magic from this hugely-popular band in the future. Dan Heymann
has expressed interest in recording with the group again (properly via
the Internet). Heymann currently resides in New York, working as a
computer programmer. Until September 11th, he worked on the 96th floor
of the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Fortunately, Heymann
arrived at the WTC subway station just after the first plane had crashed into the towers on September 11, and the area had already been cordoned off.
Music continues to dominate the lives of Peter Cohen and Fox who worked
under the Bright Productions banner, crafting music for soundtracks and
commercials (often with Ians input when time allowed). Ian, meanwhile,
continues to create music from his home studio, and he recently composed and performed the soundtrack for Main Reef Road, Nic Hofmeyers upcoming film about Johannesburg.
"Music is still a powerful part of our lives" the group attests, "We
want to be releasing Bright Blue stuff when we are sixty. Weve found a
way of working that works for us all; that suits our requirements and
with the availability of digital methods of recording, we hope to keep
creating far into the future".
Tracklisting: World Turns, Can You Feel It, Weeping, Window On
The World, Wouldnt Miss It For The World, One Of These Days, Open Your Eyes, The Rising Tide, Peace Train, Yesterday Night, Time On My Own (A Sentry's Song), Where Would I Go, 2nd Avenue, Whos That Girl, Living In Africa, Who Is The Enemy.

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------
SHILOH'S CORNER
THE GUESS WHO (Canada's secret weapon)
The place Kitchener, Ontario (hockey arena). Randy Bachman had just broken a guitar string and the group had to take a break. While Randy was tuning up, he started playing an edgy urgent riff. Taking it as a call to arms, Kale and Peterson jumped back on stage and began jamming. Burton Cummings was having a joint in the parking lot and oblivious to all of this, some-one asked him why he wasn't up there with the rest of the band. Cummings ran in, jumped onto the stage and asked what was going on. "We're jamming in E" yelled Bachman. "Play something". After ten minutes Cummings had run out of harmonica, piano and flute solos, Bachman said "Sing anything". Burton looked at the audience of fresh faced Canadian girls and thinking back to the gruelling American tour that they had just returned from, sang the first phrase that came into his head, "American woman stay away from me, American woman mama let me be". The crowd went into a frenzy and Cummings, drawing on their US experience added more images. "War machines and ghetto scenes" and "Coloured lights can hypnotise, sparkle someone else's eyes". By the time "American Woman" was released in the spring, 1970, it had transformed into a raging fuzz guitar, anti-war anthem which came in sync with the rising opposition to the American presence in Vietnam. The song sold more singles in 1970 than any act in the world, including the Beatles. It raced to the top of the US charts, helping the Guess Who to become one of the best selling acts of the year. Years later a psychedelic Lenny Kravitz would again smash the charts as a revived version crackled the air of the second Woodstock event in the nineties.
We turn back the clock to Winnipeg in 1964 with the release of a squeaky version of "Shakin all over" by Chad Allen and the Expressions. Although distantly removed when comparing to the quality and energy of the original by Johnny Kidd and the Pirates, the Canadians were loyal enough to support it all the way to the top of the charts (eclipsing the Beatles's "Eight days a week"). The single was released under the group name Guess Who due to the fact that Canadian radio stations rarely played records by Canadian artists. Toronto's Quality Records PR man George Struth's diabolical manoeuvre proved successful. In the states it reached #22 on the Billboards charts, a first for any Canadian band. Dick Clarke wanted the band for an American tour. In 1968 the Guess Who landed a regular spot on the CBC TV show "Where its at" hosted by their ex-leader Chad Allen (who was replaced by Randy Bachman). In September 1968 producer Jack Richardson mortgaged his house to pay for the recording of their first gold single "These eyes" (#6 1969) (album "Wheatfield Soul"). The group's second RCA album "Canned Wheat" favoured strongly due to the success of two hits "Laughing" (#10 1969) and the finest of their singles "Undone" (#22 1969). By 1970 their total record sales totalled 5 million which had much to do with "American Woman" #1 and "No time" #5 off the highly acclaimed album "American Woman".
One of the Guess Who's adoring fans was the daughter of president Nixon and as a result they performed at the White House in front of prince Charles, princess Anne and first lady Pat Nixon. The concert was allowed on the condition that they deleted "American Woman" from their live set. During the height of their success, growing tension between hedonist Burton Cummings and Mormon Randy Bachman, resulted in Randy leaving to form the heavy overdrive of the rocking Bachman / Turner. Sadly the group's finest live album was recorded without Randy Bachman at the Paramount theatre, Seattle, Washington, 1972. Newly recruited guitarist Kurt Winter and Greg Leskiw stepped in to energise the void. The kick-ass live show remains legendary with outstanding tracks like "Running back to Saskatoon" and "Trucking off across the sky" often chosen for compilation albums. The show opened with the high energy vocal ability of Burton Cummings and his octave wrenching "Pain Train". By the mid seventies the catchy commercial singles of the Guess Who such as "Clap for the wolf man" / "Albert Flasher", although chart toppers, had lost the flavour of the early days.
Their last album "The way they were" boasted a magnificent single "Silver Bird" and some astounding Guess Who gems such as "Palmyra", "The Answer" and "Species Hawk". Although released in the mid seventies, their album was a combination of singles recorded in the spring of 1970 at RCA's studio in Chicago. When it came to the blues strongly influenced by the Mason Dutch Blues band, the Guess Who were profound in this genre as heard on "Humpty's Blues", "Song of the dog" and "Glace Bay blues". Even the classic "American Woman" would occasionally intro with an acoustic bluesy rendition. In fact an alternate version of "American Woman" that had less fuzz guitar and more rhythm pattern captures a finer reflection of the ability of the Guess Who. Over and above the magnificent "Undone" came the understated "8:15" the energetic "Proper Stranger" and the classic acoustic dedication to folk singer Gordon Lightfoot entitled "Lightfoot". Often the albums would disperse the melodic Burton Cummings on piano with thought provoking ballads such as "Sour Suite" and "Dreams". Cummings would eventually release his first solo album in 1976 with a chart buster #10 called "Stand Tall". In 1983 Randy and Burton made their peace and re-united for one album and a concert video. Four years later the two of them toured together. Burton Cummings's 1981 album "Sweet Sweet" included a top forty hit "You saved my soul" dedicated to Randy Bachman.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
BEST KEPT SECRETS - DOG DETACHMENT (Retro Fresh FRESHCD 115)
If I had been disappointed in the music from RSA, Dog Detachment's
'Best Kept Secrets' would have redeemed all the rest. But I have been
pleased in nearly all the South African music I've acquired, so I can't say that. All I can say is that thanks to Retro Fresh these are great days to be a South African rock fan.
What I listen for in rock is beat, guitar, melody, and intelligent
lyrics. Dog Detachment has all of these on one CD covering 3 albums and
some single releases.
'Best Kept Secrets' is nearly a box set of Dog Detachment's complete
works on one CD: 16 songs, 8 mp3s, a gallery of photo files, lyric files, AND the liner notes booklet. That's nearly 100 minutes of radical melodic rock with a hard edge, with extras.
Gosh, all that's lacking to make this a perfect CD is a video of a song
performance, say 'Touch the Sky'. Can't have everything, but this CD is
loaded anyway -- and would be even if it only had the music.
I don't understand how some in the audience interpreted Dog
Detachment's music as singing of repression. According to the liner notes (by Andrew Rees), though, some people took the cool "Stormtrooper Rock" phrase in a different direction. Sure, rock is supposed to seize the listener's attention and provide a show, spectacle, or controversy. (Maybe the lead singer should have quipped, "We're more popular than Winnie Mandela."?). But Nazi-ism?
These are songs of the modern world: of despair, war, hope, and love.
But I wasn't there, so I don't know anything more than that the music and lyrics are intelligent and insightful. I'm just here now, enjoying the music.
Melodic, yet hard-edged, this is rock music to listen to over and over.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
ZEN BOULDERS - FALLING MIRROR
With a title like 'Zen Boulders' one can be forgiven for expecting a big Stones influence on Falling Mirror's 1979 debut album. However, the influence seems to come more from Pink Floyd than from Mick Jagger and the boys. Alan Faull's guitar work creates sonic landscapes of vast beauty in a similar vein to Floyd. Add to this Nielen Marais' brittle vocals that walk a tightrope between calm sensible and cracked psychotic, with a foot in each camp, but never taking sides, and you've got an album of serene psychotic beauty.
It's not only the guitar and vocals that grab one's attention, but also some wonderful piano playing that gives body and atmosphere to the album. Tracks like 'Time (is the Thief)' and 'I am the Actor' (both of which appear on the 'Shattered' compilation) benefit greatly from the added keyboards and those familiar with the version of 'Making out with Granny' on the 'Johnny Calls the Chemist' album may be interested to note that the screaming guitar intro to this classic song began life as some dramatic chords pounded on the piano.
The trade mark rock 'n roll number is 'Archie and Juggie went Down to the Store' which I don't think is as musically astute as ones that followed ('Neutron Bop' and 'Encounter in a Take Away Shop'), but lyrically surpasses the others, telling the story of America's favourite High School cartoon kids, but stripping the comic of it's innocence by having Reggie shooting Archie. All this action occurs around a cheerful chorus of 'Chom-Chom-a-Romma-Rom-Chomma-Rom-Chom'.
In 1979, the Boomtown Rats were riding high in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with their song about a high school massacre in San Diego 'I don't like Mondays'. The Rats' hit was regarded as controversial, but one wonders how the world would have reacted had they heard Falling Mirror's take on the same event, choosing to entitle their song 'The San Diego Sniping Event'.
The album ends with the epic 'Boy and Girl Alone on a Throne' which starts quietly with some beautiful Hotel California-ish guitar picking but builds to a frenzied orgasm of guitar and drums that leaves one highly satisfied and reaching for a cigarette.
Although not a huge commercial success, Falling Mirror's debut gave the SA music scene something to reflect on. The album balances delicately on the rim of the teacup of the psyche, not quite reaching the safety of the saucer of sanity but also not plunging into the murky brew of drugs and madness. One can say that 'Zen Boulders' rocks. Not in a barrage of drums and guitars kind of way (other than the finale of the closing track), but more in a refined edgy mellow kind of way.

9 [16] Papa's Gonna Kiss It Beter - William E.*
10 [8] Co Co - The Sweet
* South African Artists
Week 5 at the top for Charisma and still counting. 'Mammy Blue' was beginning to look unmoveable at the top. Despite it's dramatic entry into the top 20 the previous week, 'Amen' by the Peanut Butter Conspiracy only managed to climb 3 positions.
Mr Chameleon Name, Billy Forrest had his first top 10 hits under the guise of William E. It was his 5th top 10 hit in 3 years and his 3rd non de plume in that period. Interestingly, despite his enduring popularity, Billy never had a number 1 hit in the period 1969 to 1989, his closest brush with the top spot was when 'We're all playing in the Same Band' (as Quentin E Klopjaeger) reached number 2.
The food and drink new entries in the top 20 came from Hot Chocolate and Marmalade, while Daniel Boone made up the trio of newies. Those exiting the top 20 included 2 South African acts, Hedgehoppers (9 weeks on the chart peaking at number 9 with 'Hey') and Gert Potgieter (7 weeks, peaking at 13 with 'Sweet Maria'). Both of these were the only top 20 hits by these act.
South Africans at number 1 this week:
Mammy Blue - Charisma (1971)
Man on the Moon - Ballyhoo (1980)

5.RUK EN ROL
--------------
KAREN ZOID - ROCK CHICK
Theunis Engelbrecht Rapport 28/07/2001
They've got the money, but I've got the fun!" En die mense gaan mal. Hierdie vrou jaag die plesiervlakke hoër as hemelhoog op. Dit is so duidelik soos daglig.
Haar naam is Karen Zoid. Amper soos wat Suzi Quatro jare gelede was. Of soos Sheryl Crow.
Vir my is liedjies skryf 'n manier om my eie lewenservaring te express."
My ma is dood toe ek tien was. Die feit dat ek nie met 'n ma grootgeword het nie, het gemaak dat ek 'n ander mens is as wat ek sou gewees het. Toe ek 'n tiener was, was ek baie kwaad oor my ma se dood.
Rock is 'n skill. 'n Craft. En ek geniet my lewe."

5FM HITS OF THE 80s
At the end of 1989 (or 1990) 5fm had a broadcast of the top 150 songs of the decade. If I remember correctly, "Living years" by Mike & the mechanics was no 1 and other top 10'ers included "Lady in red" by Chris de Burgh and "Forever Young" by Alphaville. I am looking for the complete list of 150 hits that received broadcast on 26 December that year.
You don't by any chance know this one or know a potential source for obtaning the info? Don't try 5fm themselves, I got no reply on my request!
Thanks,

JONATHAN BUTLER
John Engel is currently writing a book on left-handed guitar players.
One of the famous musicians he is writing about is a South African
guitarist named Jonathan Butler who now lives in the US. He was a big
pop star as a teenager in South Africa from approx. 1973 to approx.
1982. He apparently had a lot of hits over there in that period.
John received some photographs of him, but he has nothing to show for
his South African days. Would you know of a photographic archives/library in South Africa (or a local photographer) that would/could have some pictures of him?
Thank you,

GILBERT ANDERSON - accomplished in many genres, we can expect some clever covers, fine original material and general good humour from this quietly understated player.
ANIKA - who completely defies categorisation, accompanies her own unique poetry with incisive, complex playing. if you missed her last time, don't lose the chance to catch this lady before she returns to Pretoria.

Bill Knight presents...
SMITSWINKEL CALLING
(a journey into the Interior)
Singer-songwriter, Bill Knight, an egte Kaapenaar, layers his authentic
contemporary Cape-folk music with poetical lyrics of depth and intensity, written in a characteristic Bredie of English and Kombuistaal, providing a personal but universal insight into the not so ordinary lives of everyday people.
Bill's new solo show "Smitwinkel Calling" is an intimate and personal
presentation of the Songs, Stories and eccentric characters brewed from the water of Smitswinkel Bay; a near-mythical haven at the foot of the Cape Peninsula. Hear about Roy and the Spanish Sherry - how Bill tried to run away from Home - about Hughie and the "Blaawbeck" - and of the Legendary "Varkie" and how he saw his Gat. Sub-titled "a Journey into the Interior", "Smitswinkel Calling" is a Personal journey of Discovery and an examination of the power of Myth and Legend.
Featured in the show are a number of Bill's well-loved songs, as well as an exciting selection of new material presently being recorded for his third album.
See it first at SIROCCO'S, Gordon's Bay. Saturday 24 November 2001.
Booking absolutely essential, Ph 856-0229. (Shows are booking-dependant)
