OBITUARY: MIKE SMITH
With enormous sadness we record the death of MIKE SMITH on November 2nd, following a virulent chest infection. All who knew him will remember a wonderful friend, a superb musician, one of Lifes' Special People.
Mike was born in Big Bend, Swaziland, and moved to northern Kwazulu-Natal at the age of 5 or 6 following his father who'd found work there, his mother having died when he was an infant. He earned his keep as a herdboy, milking cows and, when old enough, driving a plough behind a team of oxen.
His irresistible stage presence, a huge, warm, persona which reached
everyone along with his big-hearted music, was extremely well received
wherever he played, particularly at Splashy Fen. And always that smile.
After considerable local acclaim, here and in Namibia, this year Mike
achieved a long-held ambition to travel overseas for the first time and
test his material on an international audience. A three and a half month European tour as opening act for Elkie Brooks was his test ... and he cracked it, they LOVED him.
It must have been difficult for a lone unknown to walk out on stage with one guitar, attempting to win over a critical audience who'd paid to see the main act. Yet win them over he did, quietly delighted that his music had such broad appeal and he never mentioned the difficulties.
But circumstances were arduous, living in a tour bus, working on all but five or six days of that time, days which were spent travelling, and that's when his illness appeared. He'd been home only six weeks or so when he died.
Mike's passing so suddenly and unexpectedly has shocked us all. No doubt many people will wish to pay their respects. The Barleycorn intends to hold a Tribute Concert in the near future, inviting Mike's friends to perform and speak of the man, the proceeds of which to form a Trust Fund for his beloved daughter Miya.
Farewell, Mike, play on in peace brother.

NU STEP ON THE BREAKS
Since its creation in the early 80’s breakbeat culture has crossed the boundaries of all the genres of dance music, from Hip Hop to Electro, ‘ardkore to drum’n bass and 2 Step to Nu Skool Breaks. So come and celebrate 20 years of breaks, over 2 floors, with the DJs making it happen today.
In 206 we represent one of the strongest drum ’n bass scenes in the world with 4 DJs who have dedicated their lives to breakbeat science. Fletcher is the DJ behind the ubiquitous Krushed & Sorted duo making waves globally with their African Dope Records. Alon, or A-33 as he calls himself, is the strongest member of Cape Town’s infamous Sublime crew, and a co-host of the drum ’n bass show broadcast on Bush Radio
every Tuesday night.
Animal Chin and his Algorythm Recordings stable are now global playaz in the drum ’n bass arena and host the hugely popular Homegrown parties. Trouble is the hardest working breaks DJ in Cape Town. His input is ever present, his nights at The Lab are the talk of the underground and now that he has time in the studio, beware!
The Jam with a fresh vibe plays host to the more boppin’, get down beats. The real party pot that throws in all the best bits and comes out with a sound championed by 206 since the Mad Blunt Posse took over Friday nights in 206live (JHB) in 1997. It has continued to rock a Friday crowd in Cape Town and promises to do just that on this occasion. Damani has known how to rock a crowd since he opened The Shack all those years ago, his keen interest in breakbeat music has led him to be one of the key residents at the club weekly.
Blunted Stuntman is fresh from a stint up north where he got to play a couple of impromptu sets in Belgium and a great gig at Oppikoppi. He is constantly promoting breakbeat music nationally and is the key playa at District 206. Chesh, along with his partner, Anton, are prominent on the outdoor circuit and touch on the more psychedelic edges of the music. He, at one point, described their style as "Gangsta Trance", but yes, breakbeat all the same! AK-47 finishes off the line-up as the success story of the year. Adam is now giving lectures on DJ technique and the culture that surrounds us.
On Friday 9 November, this event will take place at the home of Cape Town breakbeats. The Jam & 206 venues are situated at 43 deVilliers Street in District 6. With a fresh vibe, it will cost R30 before 11pm (be aware that by this time you have already missed Fletcher and Damani!!!) and R30 thereafter. DAWNAY MAKES HIS MARK
Dawnay launched his debut album, 'U Touch Me - The Album' (Robroy/EMI) by kicking off as support on the Shaggy bill in Durban on Sunday October 28. That’s a good area for Dawnay, as last week he hit the No. 1 spot on East Coast Radio with ‘U Touch Me’, the opening single off the album. This coincided with ‘U Touch Me’ making its first-ever appearance at No.16 on the SA Rock Digest Album Charts.
The Big Concerts Shaggy bill with Dawnay, played Johannesburg on Nov 2
and Cape Town on Nov 4. Radio stations around the country have latched
on to the Dawnay album, and highlight tracks featured are ‘You’re my
World’, ‘High... Oops Baby!’, ‘The Real Thing’, and of course, ‘U Touch
Me’.

MONSTERS OF ROCK TOUR POSTPONED
ME Productions regret to announce the postponement of the Monsters of
Rock South African Tour, featuring Motorhead, DIO and Jerusalem
The tour has been postponed due to the FBI in the United States issuing
a warning to all travellers, ahead of a suspected Halloween terrorist
attack, not to fly during this period. This has led to the cancellation of almost all internal American flights. As a result, it is proving to
be almost impossible to get the artists to South Africa.
Promoter, Magnus Erikson, has assured the South African public that the
tour will go ahead as soon as these problems have been resolved. Tickets can be refunded via Ticketweb or retained for the future event.
A further announcement will be made shortly.

SOME FRUIT FLY NAVIGATOR UPDATES
THE PAST:
September saw the Fruities head north twice, firstly to an Intervention
Arts showcase gig in Pretoria with Cutting Jade, Zen Arcade and Four
Ounce Freedom at Cool Runnings Wonderboom. The show was well put
together and the "shooter girls" were most accommodating to ALL of our
needs. Next up was WOOOOOOOOOODSTOCK 3. Wow wow and more wow. This show gets better every year.
Had a killer set on the Friday night and pretty much passed out for the
rest of the weekend. Da Boys from Diesel Whores organised a free
compilation cassette on the weekend which featured ‘Crush' and ‘Just an
Inch’ as well as the cream of the Woodstock alternative bands. Try and
get your hands on a copy if they are still available.
THE CURRENT:
We have been working really hard in our new rehearsal room and will
emerge next month with a whole new repertoire of songs and sounds. We
have taken a slightly different approach to our songwriting and it seems to be working really well. Look out for the new songs ‘Let her go’ and ‘Shooting Down the Stars’ as well as the usual noisy stuff. Thanks to our homies in The AK Massive for letting us crash their rehearsal room. The website is nearly ready and it is expected to launch on the 10th November. (Cool)
THE FUTURE:
The band is currently negotiating the release of their first full-length album scheduled for February 2002.

TSUNAMI SA TOUR
The talented, new jazz and world music trio, Tsunami, is set to embark
on a national tour which kicks off at The Bassline in Melville on
Thursday the 8th November. Having just released their self-titled debut
album, ‘Tsunami’, through the Gallo Jazz Division of Gallo Music South
Africa, the trio will be taking their instrumental sweet sounds across
the country over the next two months.
Tsunami consists of three core musicians, all well known in the music
industry for their credibility and long-standing commitment to their
craft. Max Mikula on guitar, Peter Auret on drums and Brendan Ou Tim on
bass form the core of the group, with additional instrumentalists and
musicians adding a unique touch with additions such as the saxophone,
violin, trumpet, keyboards and percussion on some tracks during their
performance.
Their style ranges from jazz standards to Afro-funk to world music and
although all three members have performed with rock and pop bands in the past, their true passion lies in their chosen genre. Tsunami has
established itself as a popular live act - a performance not to be
missed.

Melville and Nile Crocodile in Pretoria and on Saturday, November 10 the first such festival takes place at Bugsy’s in Randburg. At these festivals patrons are entertained by some of the top emerging
bands doing the rounds in Gauteng at present..
Saturday, November 10 will be no different when Pyramid Tongue (winners
of season 7 of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds Competition), Jessica
Rabbit, Shryke (finalists at season 7 of the RP Studios Emerging Sounds
Competition), Mercurochrome and Meretrix are in action.
First band takes the stage at 20:30 and as per usual there will be lots
of give-aways during the course of the evening.

Beeskraal is almal puik! My seuntjie, Coenraad (4), se gunsteling is
ongetwyfeld "Stoute boude" en met reg. "'n Vis innie bos", "Sms", "Pampoene oppie dak", "Tokkelossie-toktokkie-bokkie" en "Tom's Trading Store" is almal liedjies wat nog baie gehoor gaan word. Daar is ook 'n baie interresante "hidden track".

THE FAT LADY SINGS (BEST OF 1995-2001) - SPRINGBOK NUDE GIRLS
Sony have released the Springbok Nude Girls’ swan song album, ‘The Fat
Lady Sings’, an 18-track compilation of the band’s best, favourite, most adored, and unforgettable songs from the six hectic years of their
glittering career. Sixteen of these songs have appeared before on the
various albums and EPs, but two of these (the farewell single ‘J59’ and
the pounding, sentimental ‘Dimmer’) are brand new Theo Crouse/Arno
Carstens’ compositions. These two previously-unreleased songs were added to this collection as a bonus, and also possibly as a signpost to where the band’s guitarist and vocalist are heading, as they attempt to find a new musical path, still under the Sony banner.
The 16 other tracks however, prove beyond all doubt that this band had
it all. The look, the unique sound, the blistering energy, and the best
collection of solid gold rock songs by any SA band since... well, since
no-one. Like triumphant, returning heroes, the band and these songs
deserve a ticker-tape parade down the main streets of Stellenbosch in an open-top Kombi, and it will be a long time until another SA band can
achieve their dominance and match their consistent quality.
The album’s cover is classic and effective, with its colourful tribute
to those Springbok Hits cover version LPs that were the source of the
band’s name. The song selection is spot on with no controversial
omissions. All the hits, favourites, and better B-sides are included.
It’s a fitting finale to a great band that may not have achieved all
they believed they could, but must surely be very content with where
they landed up. Goddank vir die Nude Girls’ se klank!

TKZEE - NEW LPEE

THE WHO (Juggernaut Energy)
Who is the Who? Tuesday night was considered the one night of the week not to visit the Marquee in London. It was one of those nights when TV offered more entertainment than the boring repertoire that usually on Tuesdays. 1965, 14th June all hell broke loose with the appearance of a juggernaut quartet called the Who. On that fateful night the face of rock changed forever as eighteen year old Keith Moon destroyed 36 drum sticks while Pete Townshend decapitated four guitar necks in two hours.
The innocence of this renegade group evolved out of a youth club band called the Detours formed in 1964. The initial foursome included Colin Dawson (vocals), Doug Sanden (drums), Pete Townshend (guitar) and John Entwistle (bass). Thanks to manager / publicist Peter Meadon the group changed their name to the High Numbers, refurbished their clothes in the mod style and replaced Colin Dawson and Doug Sanden with the charismatic Roger Daltrey and a high speed drummer Keith Moon.
Three singles were released during the High Number phase: "I'm the face", the tight and explicit "Zoot suit" and the bluesy "I'm leaving here". Pete Meadon was largely responsible for introducing Pete Townshend to the Scene Club where the Mods hung out. During the Detour phase, he assisted the Who in writing a song called "I'm the face" which was going to be the Mods' national anthem. Meadon re-christened the High Numbers as the Who after they were rejected by EMI with a vision to give the Mods a group a cult heroes. The reformation of the High Numbers came to fullness as a group called the Who, finding their spiritual solace and freedom at the Goldhawk Social Club in Shepherds Bush.
London's seedy night club scene became the shadow land for the likes of the Kray brothers. The English mafia scene were keen to exploit the rising rock scene in the UK. After much controversial wheeling and dealing film directors Kit Lambert and Chris Stamp overwhelmed Peter Meadon and were largely responsible for negotiating a deal with Shel Talmy.
Years later Meadon's shady deals would result in his death in 1978. For the next couple of years, Townshend reflected the hopes and fears of a rising generation. Meadon's influential facelift spearheaded the group's first album "My Generation". Townshend's magnificent youth anthem song "My Generation" with its stuttering vocal which had everything to do with the breakdown of heaters in the studio, reflected a voice for the renegades of the time. The Who were the English pestilence of an era that transformed energy into electricity, and electrocuted the presence of all those that beheld them. Their 16 week residency at the London's Marquee Club was a total sell-out. By 1965 they had made their TV debut on the Beat Room.
Their first single, "I can't explain" reached #8 on the charts. Much of the promotion and popularity of this single was stimulated on the British "Top of the pops" and "Ready, steady, go". Who would believe that this fearless foursome would first appear on the BBC Joe Loss Pop Show. Few would know that Roger Daltrey was fired from the band November 1965, but after "My Generation" reached #2 in the UK, was quickly reinstated. Although the Who never accomplished a #1 hit, the chart single "Something in the air" by Thunderclap Newman managed to smash the charts in June 1968 under the production of Pete Townshend.
In 1967 "I can see for miles" reached #10 on the UK charts but had a far better penetration across the waters. After their appearance at the 1967 Monterey pop festival, their popularity permeated the USA. The 1968 rock opera "Tommy", fundamentally influenced by a former failure, "SF Sorrow" (by The Pretty Things), captured the individual genius of Pete Townshend. With a major hit "Pinball wizard" the orchestrated rock interpretation resulted in a film under the guidance of the eccentric Ken Russell. It would be of interest to note that this was Pete's second attempt at the rock opera, the first being a mini version on the album "A quick one" which was re-titled "Happy Jack" in the USA.
When it came to rugged expression the power drive of "Live at Leeds" (#3 in the UK, #4 in the US), could well be regarded as the finest and most energetic live album ever recorded. Pete Townshend's 1973 release "Quadrophenia" reflected the inner aspirations of the mod era but failed to capture the glory and stamina of the "Tommy" era. In 1978 "The kids are alright" soundtrack again exposed the bountiful gems that the seventies rock generation may have missed. A number of fine compilation albums "Meaty beaty, big and bouncy" and "Odds and sods" capture the unique energy of the mid sixties. One of Townshend's aborted projects, "Lighthouse" received an energetic boost as a new album called "Who's next". This album became the landmark seventies milestone, reflecting the aggressive "Won't get fooled again" with wonderful acoustic delights such as "Behind blue eyes".
Pete Townshend remains one of the most talented rhythm guitarist to emerge out of the eclectic sixties while wrist drummer Keith Moon remains unsurpassed when it comes to ferocious speed and rhythm change. A brief experience of this talent could be viewed on the sound track "That will be the day" where he is featured as J.D. Clover.
During the classic Woodstock set, Pete Townshend removes political activist Abbie Hoffman from the stage with a slashing swing from his guitar, and the words "F*ck off my f*cking stage". This same arrogance was repeated three years before at Monterey when they refused to perform after Jimi Hendrix. English arrogance at its best the Who will fondly be remembered for classics like "The Seeker", "Substitute", "See me, feel me" and the Jimi Hendrix favourite "Pictures of Lily". In 1978 Keith Moon died of an overdose of medication which was supposedly taken to alleviate alcohol addiction. As the energy died, it karmatically evolved in the rising punk of "London calling". Like Led Zeppelin and many others, a number of reformations took place, but nothing could emulate the mod energy that shook the vibrations of the Brighton Pier in the fashionable sixties.

The more I think about it, the more I think Bedrock is a cool band
name. They play fundamental rock, with "fun" a big part of that. A further implication of the name goes back to the sexual origin of the term "rock 'n' roll", that these guys make bed-rockin' rock.
In the liner notes, they regard their music as "garage rock", but I
think they're too good for that term. The tons of garage rock I've heard has been made by unknown Sixties kids who didn't make it beyond their high school gym, and whose bands broke up due to college, the draft, or even just graduating from high school. 'Recovery' is better than garage rock, but is still pure fun like classic garage rock.
On 'Recovery', our men in Namibia perform a varied set of originals,
and most of the songs are up-tempo. They include rock anthems in 'Rock 'n' Roll Man' and 'Take a Look'. There's a bluesy number (at least the singer feels sorry for himself and his friends) on 'I'm a Loser'. We have the slow song for getting close to someone special, 'Shadows In Your Eyes'. An ode to love, 'Man Who Needs a Woman'. And, perhaps in keeping with the CD's title, the final track, the amusing 'Babbelas Blues'.
Drinking with friends and music seems to be a theme -- so is it a sport
in Namibia like it is here in Blanco, Texas? For this activity, there's
'Cold T' and 'Saturday Night'. After listening to Bedrock's 'Recovery' I feel like I went out and caught their show, complete with their sense of humor.
'Recovery', rocks with clear and distinct instrumentation, no fancy progressive noodling stretches -- only good ole rock with a nice lead guitar. These guys have the party-in-the-garage sense of fun.
Overall, 'Bedrock' is a cool name -- and they make cool, honest, rock
music.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
DANCING IN THE MOONLIGHT - WOZANI (1990)

Firstly, Wozani's 'Dancing in the Moonlight' has got nothing to do with the recent Toploader hit. Now that we've cleared that up we can get down to the nitty gritty of the album. From the first beat, you are made aware that the word 'dancing' has earned its place in the album title. Opening with the title track, the songs fairly bounce along and if they don't lure you into jumping up and dancing round your living room, they will at least cause heads to be bobbed in time or feet to be tapped.
There is some of Michael Jackson's voice in George van Dyk's vocals (other offcuts from Jackson were used to make Destiny's Child). This strong voice is set against some great African rhythms and sounds, reminiscent of Johnny Clegg and Hotline. Songs like 'Loved by You' are bright and brassy with SA's Mr Sax, Mike Faure, providing the warmth.
Like Clegg, Wozani mix the African sound with rock, although Wozani tend to be more rock oriented and less rootsy than Clegg so you have more raunchy guitar, particularly evident on 'Working for Changes'. There is a thread of reggae flowing through some of the songs and is most prominent in 'Tired', while 'Lonely People' has hints of the Police's 'Every Little Thing She does is Magic'.
If you listen to 'Feeling of Love' you may hear some of what influenced Blk. Sonshine with the simple guitar strumming, handclaps and beautiful vocal harmonies. It's the small gem of the album.
The second side of the record lyrically concentrates on the changes that had started occurring in South Africa in the early 90's with song titles like 'Working for Changes', 'Changes are Coming' and 'All Eyes (are on us)'. There is a great sense of hope for the future in the words as wells as in the tunes.
A good solid Afrorock album that will brighten up your day with its uplifting and upbeat tunes as well as its positive lyrics.

Guy Fawkes night 1971 and Charisma were still making sparks fly at the top, their third week in pole position. It was a good week for South Africans in the top 10 as both Groep Twee and Barbara Ray climbed a position while Neville Whitmill charged up a staggering 11 places to number 8. Most of the rest of the top 10 was heading downwards.
Whitmill was one of the stalwarts of the SA music scene during the 60's and is described in the History of Contemporary Music in South Africa as being "the best white soul singer South Africa ever had". His group Sounds of Brass had supported Tommy Roe on his 1969 South African tour and 2 years later, he shared chart space with Roe who entered the top 20 at number 18 this week with 'Stagger Lee'.
Another stalwart of the SA music scene, Billy Forrest was also entering the charts with 'Papa's Gonna Kiss it Better', this time under the guise of William E. It was his first hit under this pseudonym. The other Top 20 entry was Joan Baez with a cover of the Bands 'The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down'

Maar benewens hierdie en veral sy liefde vir Neil Diamond en Leonard Cohen se musiek, is hy veral ‘n kêrel vir Afrikaans. Aan die musiek van Koos du Plessis, Koos Kombuis en manne soos Lucas Maree verleen sy stem ’n anderse uniekheid wat vinnig byval vind by liefhebbers van goeie Afrikaanse musiek.
En terwyl hy, volgens sy eie getuienis nie juis ‘n man is wat self liedjies skryf of komponeer nie, is hy nie bang om nuwe talent te gebruik en met sy ryk stem te ontgin nie.
Die musiek van Mathys Roets is werklik ‘n lafenis vir ’n afgematte werksweek-gees en voedsel vir ‘n kultuur-hongerte wat nie altyd so gereeld in ons gejaagde plastiekwêreld gestil word nie.

BARLEYCORN SONGWRITING COMPETITION
The finals of the annual Barleycorn Song Competition were held last Monday night at the River Club, well attended by an enthusiastic Crowd who certainly contributed to the warmth of the evening. There was a strong feeling of mutual encouragement, respect and comradeship.
The three Judges had a difficult time in whittling their choice down to the following three:
1. "Soap Opera Diary " by Gail Schenker
2. "Be there" by Andrew McPherson
3. "Crazy 'bout your Love" by Dayle Scott
Congratulations to the Finalists.
We were also of the opinion that "Clouds" by Elma Gildenhuys deserves
special Mention. Elma has tons of talent and is lacking only in experience.
I would like to thank all present for coming, and hope that you will
continue to support us by attending, as hopefully the musicians will
continue to perform at the Club. Please remember that it is only with your support that Local Music can grow and take its rightful place.

A WEIR'D AND WONDERFUL SCHOUW WITH COMMENTS FROM THE PEANUT GALLEY-RY
It's a little over five years since I last saw the Midnight Mass live, so it was with tremendous excitement that I caught them at On Broadway in Cape Town on my recent visit to Cape Town. With both my wife and younger brother being fans, any change in line-up always needs to get the Samson Seal of Approval (SSA) (well amongst the three of us anyway). The Weir siblings Graham and Christine were awarded lifetime SSA's a long while back so relative newcomers Adrian Galley and Tina Schouw were under the microscope. I am pleased to say that they quickly earned the SSA, Adrian with his warm goosebump-inducing bass tones and Tina with her mostly jazzy, but very versatile voice.
Singing mostly original numbers (the majority penned by Graham Weir), the old magic is still there as they continue to enchant and amaze as the four voices intertwine, flirt with and cajole each other in a bubbling cauldron of harmonic perfection. There's a powerful cover of Roger Lucey's 'The Night Harry J Went to War' and an emotional version of James Phillips' 'You Light Me A Light'. The original numbers include the striking 'Free to Be', the beautiful 'Sweet Valley', the Sinead O' Connor-ish 'Guardian and Keeper of the Flame' and the sublime 'Eh Bah Ran', the latter, as always sending shivers down my spine. They even take a break from the mikes to bring us an unplugged version of the outstanding 'Sad Day'.
Amongst these more serious songs, there are a number of playful fun numbers. Their cover of the Beatles 'Piggies', performed with the lights down and the performers shining torch lights onto their faces, makes the word 'delightful' redundant. The rendition of the nursery rhyme 'Thumberlina' is an old favourite and not for fairy lovers, while 'Eggnut' has Tina in her best girlie voice.
And if after all this you are in any doubt about the ability of the Mass to concoct perfect vocal arrangements, take a listen to 'Rondo Alla Turka' by Mozart as this should put an end to that discussion.
With both the Weirs in better voice than I've ever heard them (and that's saying something) and the undoubtable talents of Tina and Adrian, you are unlikely to be disappointed by this outstanding advertisment for a cappella music. A heartwarming romp of a voicefest.

It is so darn easy to promote SA music here in the States, simply because there is so much darn good music coming out of South Africa right now! As a DJ here in Eugene, Oregon, I get to play so much SA music for listeners to KRVM and KWVA, it's easy to leave out any other country's music. During SA Music Week, KRVM and KWVA averaged nearly 10 hours of pure SA sounds on various shows. The beat goes on...
