JOHNNY CLEGG TO PLAY NELSON MANDELA
http://www.johnnyclegg.com
SA music hero and legend, Johnny Clegg, is poised to perform Johnny Clegg - The Music and The Dance at the Nelson Mandela Theatre at the Civic Theatre, from 31st October to 3rd November.
The show will feature an acoustic 'unplugged' set, which will see old favourites given a new acoustic flavour while building to the heart-thumping finale, which will feature a full ensemble set complete with an array of traditional dance. This exciting concert will also give both old and new audiences a chance to gear themselves up for a new Clegg experience with a Juluka album due out in December, and his solo album, called simply Johnny Clegg, scheduled for release early next year.
Apart from the recent impromptu performance at WOMAD in Benoni, Clegg's five-year absence from the concert scene in Johannesburg has been keenly felt by fans. During that time Clegg has been actively involved in a wide range of musical projects including an internationally-funded AIDS awareness project, a performance for the royal family in Norway, two sold out shows at the Hammersmith Odeon in London {reviewed in Issue #117 - ed}, and a tour to Burma and Thailand, all of which have kept him on the road, and his music in the spotlight. In addition to his international work he has been involved in producing music for documentaries, not the least of which is Jane Goodall's highly anticipated documentary on the Great Family of Man.
Catch this memorable event from Wednesday 31st October to Saturday 3rd November, at 20h00 each evening. Tickets are available from R60 to R120 seated. Booking now open at TicketWeb on http://www.ticketweb.co.za.

MONDETTA - A NEW SA MUSICAL HYBRID
Mondetta are Steve Newman, Gito Baloi, Wendy Oldfield (SA), Elad Neeman (Israel) and Julia Kim (Canada/Korea).
What started off as a one-off gig at a very over-crowded Bassline, has now resulted in a serious collaboration of musicianship with Steve Newman and Gito Baloi of Tananas joining forces with vocalist Wendy Oldfield and violinist Julia Kim. Julia entered the picture at WOMAD Benoni 2000 She arrived with violin in case and asked Steve Newman if she could join his workshop. Steve having never seen Julia before welcomed the Jam.
Percussionist Elad has been coming in and out of SA for the last couple of years. Based in Israel, he travels the world following any world music beat. Together, this five-piece line-up produces ambient, world music with a bite. Beautiful melodies accompanied by some serious dance grooves; all live, no sequences. From Mozambique to SA to Israel to Canada and even to Korea, Mondetta represent musical multi-culture in its simplest and purest form.
Mondetta recorded their debut album, Mondetta, in early August 2001, and it was released on September 29th 2001 in conjunction with their performance at WOMAD SA. This project has been financed by SAFM.
Mondetta Dates:
Nov 1st - Café Barcelona, Pretoria @ 9.00pm
Nov 2nd - Barnyard Theatre - White River

OPPIKOPPI BAND WEEKEND [23-25 November 2001]
With Not My Dog & Perez
With the mammoth main Oppikoppi festival now successfully hosted at the Fountains Valley in Pretoria, there has been a serious call from the peanut galleries and other less grand audience carrying pieces of equipment (some on wheels) for action in the bushveld. The Oppikoppi
organisers viscerally agreed that a tune-proselytising band weekend was indeed a good idea.
The Oppikoppi band weekends have reached near legendary status amongst the tune-converted as an opportunity for etiolated city dwellers to hit the bushveld and the sun. These weekends were also the roots of what has now grown into Southern Africas biggest and most diverse music
festival. However they have never been planned or strategized within a framework of generally accepted management techniques. Rather the decision making process around Oppikoppi band weekends have been (and will remain to be) of a spur-of-the-moment type and fraught with enough
externalities to make corporate planners cringe and statisticians cry. However it is exactly this reasonably haphazard approach that gives these weekends their special status and unique appeal amongst the tune-faithful.
Apart from the bushveld and the sun, the weekends are built around solid dollops of tunes dished out in stand-and-deliver sessions until the audience give up or go away. The selection of Not My Dog and Perez for the next Oppikoppi band weekend should indicate the organisers
intention to add another not-very-nimble chapter in the Oppikoppi textbook for tunes. The weekend is not ideal for sun seekers who are allergic to guitars or the sound they make (or both).
The tickets for the entire weekend will be R50 and will include camping fees. More information can be obtained on the website http://www.oppikoppi.co.za or phoning the Oppikoppi hotline on
082 231 0 231. Accommodation bookings can be emailed to mailto:oppikoppi@yebo.co.za or by phoning 014 7860597.
Tickets will also be on sale through Ticketweb shortly.

3. LET'S ROCK - NEW, RECENT AND UPCOMING RELEASES
---------------------------------------------------
JUDITH ARRIVES WITH "A SMILE"
The highly rated SA vocalist, Judith Sepuma, has just released her long awaited debut album, 'A Cry, A Smile, A Dance', on BMG Africa's Giant Steps label. Two of the songs off this new album, title track 'A Cry, A Smile, A Dance', and 'I Remember', are already on high rotation on JHB station KayaFM, and the classy album promises to deliver several more hits.
Judith's awesome new album was produced by BMG Africa Afro-jazz star, Selaelo Selota, whose newly-released second album, 'Enchanted Gardens', is already doing very well in stores nationwide. Selaelo Selota has also found time to produce the new album, 'Wantolobela', by rising Afro folk singer Umanji.
-----------------
NEW 'ON TRACK' STUDIOS CD COMPILATION
Out of the On Track studios in Claremont comes a new home-grown CD compilation. Scheduled for release on 1st December 2001, 'On Track 2002' features a host of previously unreleased material from the nether regions of the Peninsula, all on one suicidally-priced CD.
This 15-track collection features various artists including the Sons of Selassie, RICHe, Language, Jogesh, Intylo, Dave, and Me. The music varies from rock through to reggae and trance, with a mixture of dub, chant, and folk thrown in for good measure. From the well-oiled 'Praise Him' by the Sons, through to the whimsical 'I Love my Dog' by Me, the album bursts with the pent-up energy of a collection of artists long since frustrated by a lack of affordable quality recording facilities and means to the market.
From what started as a wistful idea in a sandy back yard in Lotus River, 'On Track 2002' is the culmination of many months of hard work and careful co-ordination from both the studio and the artists. Many of the musicians featured had not had the opportunity to play with decent instruments, with real drums, much less hear mixed down recordings of their efforts. This has all changed with the formation of On-Track Studios, a part-time, individually financed operation, run by Derek Organ, who engineers and co-produces, and is partly responsible for transporting many of the car-less musicians to and from the state-of-the-art studio.
Making her debut on a music CD is Jogesh, a yogi from the Yoga Centre in Rondebosch East. Her mystical chants have been backtracked with some drum and bass to give an Oriental dub sound that is quite unique to the local music scene. Me is a busker from the doorway next to Kuzmas, and the Sons have long been experimenting with some of their tunes, dubbing away like crazy to give a thicker slant on their already full sound. RICHe has come to the party too, with solid trance grooves and for those who like their medicine straight up, Language rock in the good old fashioned way, with tearing lead and anthem-like vocals fronting a solid rhythm section, as evidenced on 'The Breeze'. Boy Band Intylo, make their debut too, bringing their particular brand of Delft harmonics, and a bit of peace and quiet too, to the On-Track compilation. Finally there is Dave, lead guitarist from the Sons, who has composed and arranged some solo material for your listening pleasure.
'On Track 2002' represents perhaps a more realistic cross-section of what is happening in South African music right now. Many of the artists featured are wet behind the ears, and some are old war-horses who have played many a gig on a shoestring budget, probably more often than not spending more than they earned on a particular gig. This is their chance to get exposure through quality presentation.

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------
SHILOH'S CORNER
CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (Mozart of the blues)
The conventional standard of the blues received a grating surgery from the improvised blend of delta blues via the eccentric Captain Beefheart. The group headed by Don van Vliet who started out with the Omens, played an aggressive harmonica and saxophone. Late 1959 he dropped out of college and joined the beatniks in California, along with friend and associate Frank Zappa. After much discussion Frank and Don decided to combine their talents as a group called the Soots with the motivation to launch a film called "Captain Beefheart meets the Grunt people". This far-fetched fantasy failed to capture interest and the Soots denied that they were ever an item. Both parties split, Zappa to Los Angeles to form the Mothers of Invention and Van Vliet to Lancaster to form his Magic Band in 1964.
In spring 1964 A&M Records signed the group and they released an outlandish version of "Diddy Wah Diddy". This classic Bo Diddley nugget features some of the biggest and baddest bass line ever recorded. After the release of this raucous single, the group made their debut at the fourth annual Hollywood Teen Fair in the spring on 1965. The Captain's wolfish howl and igniting harp is aggressively over the top, yet their teen appeal won them appreciation from the crowds. Strange as it would seem, the single was produced by David Gates of Bread fame.
Their second single, "Moon Child" written by David Gates, had little impact, yet both were local L.A. hits. In 1966 the band cut the notorious "Electricity" which featured the early stages of the mellotron. The Captain's prime influence came from the energy of Howling Wolf, yet his eccentric mannerisms could be likened to that of the Englishman Arthur Brown. This bizarre style would revive itself with an album called "Safe as milk", featuring the sliding blues of Ry Cooder (ex-Rising Sons).
The album features the outstanding rhythmic lead of "Zig Zag Wanderer", while the soul of "I'm glad" cries from the gutter. The Captain's "Drop out boogie" had a seminal influence on England's Edgar Broughton Band, specifically on their "Apache Drop Out" (The Captain's song in a medley with The Shadows' "Apache") released in 1971. It is now accepted that the album "Safe as milk" (recorded prior to "Sgt. Peppers") is a major forerunner and landmark to the future of rock in the seventies. This has much to do with the recent cult movie "High Fidelity" and further more the inclusion of Beefheart on the outstanding "The Big Lubowski".
Due to the sudden departure of Ry Cooder a booked appointment at the Monterey Pop Festival fell through. Ry Cooder once stated "I got out just in time". In December 1968 came the pure aggression of an album called "Strictly Personal" with the brilliant single called "Gimme dat harp boy" The essence of this single is reminiscent of the style of Papa Lightfoot from the Gondoliers. The gutsy and guttural style with a borrowed riff from Howling Wolf's "Spoonful" spearhead the distinctive qualities of Don van Vliet.
Don van Vliet's uncomfortable mannerism became even more horrendous when he kidnapped various members of a group called the HMS Bounty, in particular Merrell Fankhauser (former surf guitar Impacts). Merrell was trapped in the magic bathroom, with a collection of exotic and poisonous spiders, but finally secured his release after an all-night rap with the Captain. It was during this time that the Captain made some mistakes, and contrary to public opinion which seems to be the fashion, "Trout Mask Replica". Some times one would have to admit that when one reached into the murky octave of insanity all that would come forth would be a regalia of trippy balderdash. Some would even classify this album as reminiscent of Ornette Coleman. But let us come away from the album that hid his face when acid ruled the blues and focus on an album that is rarely mentioned in the rock annals, the soulful and melodic "Bluejeans and Moonbeams". Often regarded as commercial (when was the Captain ever commercial?), this 1974 masterpiece is imaginative and rich in the depth of soul. From the melodic "Observatory Crest" to the laid back "Further than we've gone" which not even Van the man could emulate, speaks of a love that only the Captain could paint.
His rendition of J.J. Cale's "The Same Old Blues" and the rhythm tempo of "Captain's Holiday" and "Pompadour Swamp", create an album diverse, listenable and far from commercial. The album is clearly reminiscent of his critically acclaimed "Unconditionally Guaranteed". In 1975 Beefheart and Zappa released their live album "Bongo Fury" - a reconciliation took place ten years after Don accused Frank of selling him out as a freak. These days he lives a recluse life in the Mojave desert as a painter. His paintings fetch a tidy sum of $25 000 a piece, but sadly in the mid nineties it was alleged that Beefheart was suffering from multiple sclerosis and more recently prostate cancer.

JOHNNY CALLS THE CHEMIST - FALLING MIRROR (1986, re-issued 2001 in by RetroFresh)
http://www.rock.co.za/fallingmirror
"Everything we do is psychotic..." - Nielen Mirror, 1985
I've heard concept albums, and a few albums that purport to be concept
albums but aren't (I'm undecided whether 'Sergeant Peppers' is a
concept album, for example). 'Johnny Calls the Chemist' by Falling Mirror defines the term "concept album" for me.
The album's mood is obsessive, dark, and appropriately claustrophobic,
without being at all depressing. Nielen Mirror, Allan Faull, and Tully
McCully have captured perfectly the mind-set of Johnny, the atmosphere and the culture of the pharmacy (okay, the chemist's), and the city street of Automatonsville, and mixed it with a man's fascination with a woman.
Stylish, classy, and cool, this is a high culture rock product of the
prescription drug world mingled with a blind and following attachment to a woman named Collette. The liner notes add some dimension to the story, but the music's the thing as it should be.
Beneath the dark surface are troubled rumbles, yet this is a fun CD. While it's better to experience the whole story, one can dip into it. Like the best series novels, each novel (or song in this case) can stand alone. So one can listen to 'I Fought for My Friend' or 'As Sly As the Fox' without feeling there's something missing.
Heavy on keyboards, guitars, and some Dylanesque vocals, this is
fully-realized rock, full of both style and substance.
Almost every word of the album follows one of Edgar Allan Poe's rules
for writing, that every word should be chosen for the way it aids the final effect of the story. "Almost" because I'm not so sure about the use of "chili beans" on 'Sly As the Fox'. Kinda clunky, but maybe kinda cute. Certainly every song contributes to the overall portrayal of this life and the obsession with Collette.
The droning, hypnotic chant of 'Chemist Girl' creates an obsession in
me to hear the song again. I love the chanted pharmacological shopping list and the chirpy-chirpy-cheep-cheep girlie chorus.
Placing the rock 'n' roll number 'Encounter in a Takeaway Shop' right
after 'Chemist Girl' provides a lightness, a break -- even pill-poppers have moments of joy and giddiness.
I always enjoyed the hit song 'Johnny Calls the Chemist', but it was
not until I read the liner notes and watched the cool video on this CD that I really heard the song. Then it hit me like the powerful virgin drug experience of a first-time taste.
The lyrics have an eye for detail in the bigger picture of this sort of
medicated life. Overall, 'Johnny Calls the Chemist' is a united, amazing work, one that proves that our rock music can be pop music, or that it can be art. Consider this a raving review, an endorsement even, by one who is only wired on black coffee.
In conclusion? 'Johnny Calls the Chemist' is deliciously sinister,
delightfully ominous, and a really rockin' CD. In summary? We get into
Johnny's mind, and he is a man who thinks too much and is chasing a
complicated girl who works in a chemist.
Where are you now, Colette? For whom do you inspire songs these days? Can I follow you home?

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
WHITEY IN LOVE - NIKI DALY (1977)
Niki Daley sounds like a psychotic philosopher. His clever lyrics are
delivered in an almost bored lecturer style, but there is an ever present hint of madness that makes the vocals edgy and interesting.
Responsible for the deliciously infectious 'Is it an Ism or is it Art?' which appeared on his 'Living in the Suburbs' album in 1984, Daly revisits this quirky formula on 'Be Bop Traffic Cop' but wisely refrains from making an album of 11 isms (or should that be 11 arts). Side 1 has mostly a relaxed almost lounge jazz sound and this somewhat lulls the listener into a false sense of security as side 2 gets more and more edgy and tense.
Opening track 'When Eddie Comes Home' is a sad intro but does feature some warm brassy bits. The pace picks up with 'Zeitgeist' and by the time the first side is finished, you are sitting with your feet up, nodding you head in time to the rhythm and probably feeling slightly melancholic. It is in such a frame of mind that you get up to turn the record over and just as you're about to settle back, sounds start eminating from your speakers that are somewhat like the sounds you hear in movies as the baddie gets up to mischief and you can't settle down. Daly's voice starts become cracked and desperate. At times it feels like you're in Falling Mirror terroritory with the guitars replaced by keyboards.
By the time you reach 'Sunny S. Africa' you are are quite on edge and the half whispered vocals on this closing track, along with it's uncomfortable anti-apartheid lyrics, leave you shifting uneasily in your chair, not quite brave to look your speakers directly in the tweeters. The song ends with Daly listing the statistics regarding reclassification of people to different races and concludes with the stark 'No blacks became whites and no whites became blacks' this album is too quirky and dark, let alone far too political to gain mass appeal in South Africa, but if you like your music to be challenging, give this a spin.

Week 2 at number 1 for Charisma and they were sitting comfortably. The
amazing revival of the Hedgehoppers' 'Hey' (up 8 places from 18 to 10 after having dropped from 10 to 8 the previous week) meant that having 2 versions of the same song in the top 10 only lasted a week as Delaney and Bonnie's version of 'Never Ending Song of Love' dropped to 17.
Danyel Gerard made good progress towards the top while the rest of the top 10 merely reshuffled itself a bit.
Lower down the top 20 a South African entry came in the form of Neville
Whitmill's 'Get Me Some Help', but this knocked another local, Lauren Copley off the charts.

5.RUK EN ROL
--------------
Miskien volgende week."
Die musikant Al' se ware identiteit, wie hy is en en waar hy vandaan kom, bly een van die bes bewaarde geheime in Afrikaanse musiek van die afgelope paar jaar. Al' stel dit as volg: "Soos my vriend Dirk glo ek in 'n hinderlaag. Lê laag en hinder niemand."
Die CD 'My Hond Fanie' bevat 'n wye en kontrasterende verskeidenheid soos die meesleurende en musikale 'Droomtowenaar', die ligte 'Rawsonville se Girls' en 'Worcester Kat', asook sterk alternatiewe lirieke soos die ernstig-siniese 'Justice' en die omgewingslied 'Neuk'.

6.ROCKLINE - FORUM, REQUESTS AND FEEDBACK
-------------------------------------------
STATION 1
I am looking for information on a local band with the name of Station 1. I don't know if you guys have featured them but a mate of mine bought a CD for next to nothing and the music was really good. There is no info on the CD cover except for a guy who almost looks like the bass player for Hotline. It must be a fairly recent band.
André Lourens
mailto:ailourens@ananzi.co.za
{Good recognition skills there, André; main man behind Station 1 is George van Dyk, ex-Hotline, also Gate, Wozani and others. We've asked George for some more info about Station 1 and are waiting for his reply - ed}

LUMIERE
"Lumiere are an alternative electronic-rock band from North London. They are Kim (vocals), Ryan (guitar) and Cade (synthesizer)
With musical roots from The Cure to Depeche Mode, geographical roots from South Africa and New Zealand, and Visual roots from Man Ray to Marc Bolan, Lumiere has united in London to reflect the diversity and isolation of all people. To shine a light on the darkness one feels being alone in a crowd."
Hello, my name is Irvine and I am from the production company that
represents the London based alternative rock band, Lumiere.
With 2 of Lumiere's members being South African, Lumiere has its sights set on SA. Although, Lumiere, are not a South African band, but one of the exciting upcoming British/London Rock bands, Lumiere is very much South African in its ideas and roots. Lumiere have already been featured on 5FM.
As Lumiere begin playing around England and reaching a wider and bigger
audience, as well as already establishing a buzz by headlining shows in
London every month, we are wanting to broaden our audience by having various magazines from around the world review our CD in their respective publications.
We would like to invite you to our headlining gig at The Barfly
@ The Monarch on November 16th in Camden Town, London. We will be onstage at 22:00 so best to be there a bit earlier. This is also the launch party for our new single, "Thirteen".
Regards

ZEN SURFING IN THE 3RD WORLD
I hope you can help me. Sometime during the nineties a Cape Town based artist recorded a song called "Zen surfing in the third world". The video got quite a bit of airplay on SABC. I hope someone can help me to find the song or album as well as the name of the artist.
Good Cheers
Etienne

{'Zen Surfing...' is a great album by Robin Auld; recorded by the power trio of Robin, Kevin Gibson and Robert Hack and produced by Lloyd Ross, released on Shifty Music in 1993. Cover scan and tracklist at: http://www.rock.co.za/files/robin_auld.html - ed}

I am looking for old LM Radio lead-ins and commercials along with the great Rising Sons, Staccatos, Flames, Peanut Butter Conspiracy, Alain D. Woolfe and Nicky Spiro. Your help will be rewarded both financially as well as deeply appreciated. Any Radio Rhodesia comms and leads will be great also.

MEADOWLANDS - ARCHIE COKER & THE METEORS
I live in Huntsville, Alabama, in the USA, and ever since I stumbled
onto the One World online music store, I've been having a blast
tracking down music from my younger days. I've already had a whole
bunch of CDs (mostly Afrikaans) delivered to me here in Huntsville.
Awesome!
I never thought that I'd ever be able to find and replace the singles
I have with CDs. What A Treat!! There is one single that I have
here (which is unfortunately in a not so good condition) that I would
dearly want to replace. "Meadowlands" by Archie Coker and the Meteors.
Is there anything available, either on CD or vinyl? Can a record
company help? Can Vangie Coker perhaps help me obtain a copy of
"Meadowlands"?
I would love to replace my scratchy copy. Apart from this being a
catchy tune, the history behind the song is also what contributes to
it's importance and significance in the annals of S.A. music. Remember
the forced move from Sophia Town, and the resistance portrayed in
"Meadowlands?"
"...ons dak nie, ons polla hier!"
I wonder how many people that jived to the rhythm of this song, ever
gave the meaning of the lyrics a second thought.
Regards,
Robert Cottrell

GEORG VOROS
This is Georg Voros, ex-drummer for bands such as éVoid, Neill Solomon's Bazaar, Snakeshed, Wizard, Wozani, amongst others. I currently live in London and will be in SA from December 8th to January 12th. As I've been away from SA quite a while I'd like to make contact with any old friends/acquaintances who'd like to meet up - Neil Johnson, the first round's on you, you tight arse! ha ha. Jorge Bastos where are you hiding? Colin Heaney, see ya soon! Trevor Brown (drummer) hope you see this? Cedric Saffy (guitarist) whereabouts? Dan Chiorboli (percussionist)? Carlo Mombelli (bassist) are you back in SA?

SOUTH AMERICA MEETS SOUTH AFRICA
This is Gustavo from Cabriten Panchen Records in Argentina. I'm going to South Africa for my holidays, and I'd like to know if you can help me with some things. As I'm a maniac record collector I'd like to know if you can give me some record shops addresses or meeting places where I can find some South African and maybe another African countries records. I'm into punk and hardcore music mostly with all their derivations (ska, grind, crust, oi!, etc.).
I'd also like to know some venues addresses as maybe I could have the time for seeing some SA bands alive. And if any of you would like to contact me there, it would be great as you can make me know/meet some places/people/bands. I could take with me some of my releases just in case you could be interested in trading some of my stuff against yours (let me know this in advance please). I don't know exactly where I will spend my time but I intend to stay at least 3-4 days in every place such as Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Johannesburg, Pretoria, etc.
I don't have any contacts or e-mail addresses for other African countries, so if you know something that could help me I'll be very grateful. I intend to also visit Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Seychelles. Well, I hope I have not bored you, and please, if you could help me with something, try to e-mail me before November 4th, the day I'm leaving there.
Thanks a lot in advance and I hope to hear from you soon.
Cheers, Gustavo.

7.ROCK ON - LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
--------------------------------------
5FM/EDGARS BIRTHDAY BASH
Supersport Park, Centurion, 27 October
For an ex-pat SA music lover back in the country for a quick visit, what could be better than timing your visit to coincide with the 5FM/Edgars birthday bash? Well possibly watching all the same bands playing the Glastonbury Festival with R.E.M. playing on one of the smaller stages, but we're still a few years away from that.
The Unearthed Stage featured some of the upcoming bands like Cutting Jade, Zen Arcade and Perez, all of whom impressed. Playing mostly hard rocking grunge, these groups gave the tent successive solid blastings. Of the 3 acts mentioned, Zen Arcade were, in my opinion, the best with a roaring Pearl Jam sound and great stage presence, but we're talking small margins here as Cutting Jade also produced a polished set.
On the main stage, the first act of the day was Mean Mr Mustard who did get up my nose a bit by sounding a bit too much like they were trying to be Bryan Adams. They were followed by Max Normal with a mostly rap set that again didn't do too much for me. Fortunately we didn't have to wait for Watershed for the turning point on the main stage as Wonderboom came on next and produced a manic set of wild punkish rock, including the recent (and rather intriguing) cover of Rabbitt's 'Charlie' as well as a hard rocking version of éVoid's 'Shadows'.
The crowd nearly went mental when Semisane played 'Life', the theme to Big Brother, and most of Watershed's hits were received to a huge roar of appreciation from the crowd, none more so than 'Indigo Girl'. However, it was a spicy set from just returned Just Jinger that was the highlight for me. Art and the boys blasted out the favourites, including a wonderful version of 'Sugarman' and ended with an awesome group drumming session that drove the crowd so wild that they screamed for an encore and got it. Saron Gas made some excellent hardcore grunge growlings and screamings, clearly showing how they landed their recent US record contract.
The Springbok Nude Girls final ever show was eagerly awaited and the band were welcomed on stage to a huge roar. Being a stadium, this final ever gig lacked the intimacy and atmosphere of their previous final ever gig in London 2 weeks ago, but was as good a performance by the band. It left me looking forward to their next final ever gig.
Overall I was very impressed not only with the quality of music coming out of South Africa, but with the stage presence and showmanship of most of the bands on offer. As Art Matthews so eloquently put it "SA MUSIC ROCKS MAN!!!!"
Oh, Danish group Hopscotch and the UK's Feeder also performed.

BEDROCK
http://www.bedrockband.com
Bedrock's new internet site is up and running so we have managed to abandon that long-winded URL which, although it served us well for three years, couldn't be remembered by anyone.
Apart from that our hottest news is the fact that the band will be appearing at the Perron in Darling on the night of Saturday, 10 November. We will be playing from eight-ish and the cover charge is R35-00 which includes a light meal. If you've not heard us before or would like to hear material from our CDs "live", this is one not to miss. If you think we sound ropey when recorded just wait for our live performances - it's utter chaos!! Still, as long as you have a good time our objective will have been achieved!
If you'd like to get along to the Darling gig please give our "special agents" in Darling a call - Kotie or Tasha Reid on 022 - 492 - 2858 or mailto:cyclopes@intekom.co.za. There is plenty of accommodation at Darling if you want to night-stop and I'm sure Tasha will refer you to the Darling website if you wish to make bookings or seek advice on this score.
We fully intend making this a party to remember!!

COMPACT DISC WHEREHOUSE CAPE TOWN UPCOMING WEEK EVENTS:
November 2nd-4th
All the following performances are free events and open to the public:
Friday November 2nd 6pm Four Days Notice
The music of Cape Town band, Four Days Notice, has been described as acoustic rock with jazz, folk and classical undertones.
Their 'coffee house rock' or 'folk pop', characterised by soulful lyrics and infectious rhythms, has quickly ensured the band an enthusiastic following in their native Cape Town since its inception in May 1999.
They have just released their debut offering, a self-titled EP containing 5 tracks which is available at Compact Disc Wherehouse.
Saturday November 3rd 2pm DNA Strings
One of the most exciting projects for Afrimusik yet! The sound of DNA Strings spells "cross-over", all over. These new guys on the block are truly unique - not only for their fusion of Irish fiddling and Afro-Spanish beats on the drum and guitar, but also for the unusual situation of an all instrumental band finding great popular appeal.
Whether it is the great tunes, the fresh blend of the acoustic instruments, or the lyricism of the violin or the beat of the bass drum bound together by the flamenco sounding rhythms is of little consequence.
The band will be playing in-store ahead of their much-anticipated debut CD to be released before the end of the year.
Sunday November 4th 11:00am Classical Breakfast
The Sunday tradition continues with live classical music at Compact Disc Wherehouse. Every week features local classical talent in a calm and soothing environment. Relax and enjoy a breakfast special from House of Coffees while taking in the strains of live classical music.

THE INNER EAR: on SAfm

TO HEAVEN & BACK ...with a little hell on the way
- Nigel Vermaas on the 2001 North Sea Jazz Tour to Europe
(or FROM ROOTS TO TOOTS?)
On 11th July, 46 or so people from South Africa travelled to London, Amsterdam, the Hague and Paris on a Radio Listeners Tour, the primary focus of which was the 26th North Sea Jazz Festival from 13th -15th July in the Hague.
North Sea Jazz is one of the biggest jazz festivals in the world: 16 stages in one gigantic conference venue, each hosting music simultaneously for 3 days. Names this year included Herbie Hancock, Ray Brown, Dianne Reeves, George Duke, Cesaria Evora, Toots Thielemans, Joe Lovano, Ahmad Jamal, Chick Corea, Bobby McFerrin, Al Jarreau, Miriam Makeba, John McLaughlin, Van Morrison, Erykah Badu.. and hundreds more. Imagine the Cape version times 6 (4 times as many stages plus one extra day).
Nigel Vermaas's latest documentary takes us on tour with the listeners of two radio stations, SAfm and P4. We dodge bicycles and party in Amsterdam, luxuriate in the festival music and spend a day in Paris. We also meet members of the touring party: Bobby who couldn't believe his eyes and ears, Deonita who didn't quite cope with Amsterdam, Duma (also known as Gus) who didn't feel he got what he wanted, a highly critical Ricky, a disgruntled Mark, who partied all the same, Sue - on tour only to keep her husband company - who learnt that jazz is many kinds of music..
"The people, the music, the places were wonderful," says Nigel, "the travelling was hell. But then that's touring." And the final verdict?
"Roll on 2002!!!"
