JEREMY DOWSON MOURNED

South African Arts journalist, Jeremy Dowson, passed away on Monday 8 October after a suspected hit-and-run accident in Somerset Road, Green Point. Jeremy (41), who was born in Kenya, began his career as a political writer in Durban before moving to Cape Town where he worked as a journalist and sub-editor for many of the Cape Town and national newspapers and magazines. He helped develop the Intekom Alive website before moving on to other news-based cyber-publications, and was currently working as the specialist entertainment editor at IOL.co.za

Jeremy was a member of the '80's Durban new wave band, Ivy and the Creepers. He more recently helped form the "Prozac Pop" group Jump, for whom he played keyboards and guitar, sang back-up vocals, and wrote the songs. When not pursuing his own musical career, Jeremy saved his best and most positive writing for the SA music and theatre scenes, which he covered with grace, wicked humour and suss.

Jeremy had an astute and perceptive mind, vast experience, and a broad and deep general knowledge, gifts he generously shared with anyone and everyone. But most of all, he was a warm, gentle, caring, passionate and enthusiastic person who will be sadly mourned and always missed but remembered with a smile by his very wide circle of family, friends and colleagues. A big, brilliant, bright, funny, freckled, orange light has gone out in Cape Town. (SS)

There will be a memorial service at 2pm on Monday October 15 at Goodall and Williams, 368a Main Road, Observatory, Cape Town. From 4pm on the same day, there will be a tribute gathering and wake at Cafe Manhattan, 74 Waterkant Street, Cape Town. Tea and snacks will be available, and there will be a cash bar. Donations in lieu of flowers to The Big Issue (phone 021 461 6690).

PS - we're going to give the last word to Pieter Dirk Uys, Jeremy's friend and colleague, by borrowing a part of his tribute published on the special 'Hamba Kahle Jeremy' website created in his honour by his IOL.co.za colleagues at: http://www.iol.co.za/html/whatson/tribute/index.php

"Darling Jeremy,

I will miss you so much, especially in my work as you were one of the few theatre journalists who encouraged and enjoyed pushing the edge of the envelope. We did it with 'Trekking to Teema' which became an internet novel on iol because of your vision. Look after yourself up there because you're going to be freaked out with seeing so much of Elvis, John Lennon, Garbo, Dietrich and all the other icons. And if you see Hendrik Verwoerd cleaning the angels' toilet with his tongue, pee on his shoes for me.

Pieter-Dirk Uys"

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------

SHILOH'S CORNER

THE MANIC ADVENTURES OF THE MOOG AND THE MELLOTRON (PART 2)

Some of the finest hooks when it came to the mellotron could be sourced on the 1974 "Mirage" by Camel on the track "Nimrodel" where Peter Bardens intros and then blends mesmerising patterns with Andy Latimer's guitar work. So often we forget to acknowledge the Moody Blues and their achieving moment in 1968 with an album called "In search of the lost chord", Michael Pinder's spacey development on "House of four doors" and the melodic "Voices in the sky" create sinister visions which are acutely elaborated on this versatile album.

In 1967 Whitney and Chapman of the group Family released their seminal masterpiece "Music in a doll's house". Roger Chapman's voice hovers hypnotically over the track "Mellow in grey" which wreaks of subtle mellotron melody. One of the most memorable mellotron curves could be found on the track "Impressioni Di Settembre" ("The world became the world"), featured by the Italian band PFM. Flavio Premoli's grasp of the mellotron had so much stamina that is caught the attention of
lyricist Pete Sinfield (King Crimson) who strongly influenced their mid
seventies period.

The progressive rock world is inundated with moments of magic when the mellotron reached that sound higher than man's ear and would bend visions and pictures, taking you into the netherworld of fantasy and adventure. David Sinclair, keyboardist for the group Caravan, creates an aural symphony with the track "L'Auberge Du Sanglier / A hunting we shall go". His influence is strongly felt on the Decca releases of "In the land of grey and pink" and "If I could do it all over again".

The early seventies gave us the fantasia of a group called Genesis, in
particular their albums "Trespass", "Wind and Wuthering" and "A Trick of the Tail" flavour the talents of Anthony Banks. Tony's characteristic mellotron sound gave Genesis their notorious flavour during the mid seventies. During the early stages of the group, the twelve string acoustic guitar of Anthony Phillips would mould aptly with the mellotron of Tony Banks on tracks like "Stagnation", "White mountain" and "Visions of angels" off the album "Trespass".

When it came to the forerunners of techno music, German group Tangerine Dream could rightfully be labelled as the champions of electronica. The ability of Edgar Froese is powerfully expounded on the albums "Phaedra", "Rubycon" and "Stratosfear". This gifted musician would
forge a successful career with Virgin and would pay homage to the mellotron throughout his entire career.

The birth of the Moog synthesiser, or let us say the beginning of its life, started in 1964. Although various prototypes emerged in the mid fifties, the first revolutionised item was known as the Moog modular system. This analogue synthesiser was made up of various boxes linked to the keyboard. Timbres were built within to filter various harmonics (very much in the style of the North African guitar). Initially this monophonic instrument could only be utilised for studio performances due to its size. The 1968 "Switched-on Bach" released by Wendy Carlos (born Walter Carlos in 1941), utilised the large 3C version. During the early seventies the mini-Moog came to fame alongside the mellotron. The final climatic product that became the standard with the progressive rock revolution was the Prophet Five (a synthesiser with five voices in one). This particular instrument proved extremely popular with Edgar Froese from Tangerine Dream, but it was the global electronic visionary Terry Riley with his forerunner album "A rainbow in curved air" that set the stage for this symphonic instrument.

Few would know that one of the first main stream rock musicians to endorse the Moog synthesiser was Roger McGuinn of the Byrds. The instrument was featured on "The notorious Byrd brothers" album released in 1968. Another phenomenal visionary that the world has failed to recognise is Tommy James and his group the Shondells. In 1969 he released his album "Cellophane Symphony" which strongly featured the synthesiser. In fact the title track was heavily layered with its sound effects. One of the album's best cuts, "Changes", is highly utilised by the electronic effect to give it a spacey feel.

Even George Harrison of the fab four would release his 1968 ambient album "Wonderwall" which comprised of Moog synthesiser and Indian sitar. It seemed as though the whole world was mesmerised by electronica and those that were first in, got the glory. In hindsight the man to revolutionise the Moog synthesiser would be none other than Keith Emerson (of Emerson, Lake and Palmer). In association with its inventor, Doctor Robert A. Moog (his surname rhymes with "vogue"), ELP released their second album "Tarkus" which featured the twenty minute title piece, becoming the band's trade mark. Keith Emerson's full potential was highly utilised on the track "Aquatarkus" which eventually resulted in the album reaching #1 in the UK and top ten in the USA.

Conclusion next week...

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

AFTERLIFESATISFACTION
http://www.nudegirls.co.za

Just because South Africa's Great Nude Hope have broken up doesn't
necessarily make SNG classic rock, not just yet. They're still too fresh, even though the press release for the Generation Now show at Cool Runnings Wonderboom said that the old generation of a year or two ago is making way for the new generation of rock.

I'm sure Cutting Jade, Fruit Fly Navigators, and the others are
excellent modern rock bands, and I know the generations get shorter between rock waves (is a seventh wave about due?), but I'm also sure that the musos of SNG are not ready to go quietly into the good night of classic rock or, shudder, oldie-dom.

Right up front, I need to state: SNG's music is not too loud and I do
understand the words, okay? But there are rare moments on this album when the music is harsh, even abrasive. But most of the time: brilliant. Not smart, not intelligent, but brilliant.

The CDs that came in my One World order with this CD included
Sugardrive's 'Sand.Man.Sky' and Squeal's 'Man and Woman' so you know my
musical taste runs to rock, despite occasional dangerous swerves into Four Jacks and a Jill territory and the pure pop of Carikeland. {You just had to get that in, didn't you, Kurt? - ed}

I think of SNG as The Band of a Thousand Riffs. They can cram more ideas and rock passages into one song than another band might use in an entire album. Catchy riffs are used almost as attention-getting throwaways, played, displayed, then replaced with another neat rock rhythm or novel sound, so there is never a dull moment.

Depending on the track, my opinion of SNG goes up and down -- often due
to the before-mentioned and rare harshness of the sound. Mostly, my opinion stays up. Like many, I thought they could have-should have gone all the way from Stellenbosch to the world.

The songs on 'Afterlifesatisfaction' rock hard, jam on, and even play
tender. It is an amusing juxtaposition to have Nico Carstens play accordion on 'Beautiful Girl' (and I use "amusing" with no disrespect to Mr. Nico Carstens, I'm only referring to his unexpected instrument). The song works wonderfully, better than SNG's trumpet does sometimes.
That is one of the maddening aspects of SNG. They can play a rave-up
fantastic rock song of great playing, singing, and purposeful trumpet, then follow it with a song wherein the horn becomes silly, Arno's vocal stylings become a self-caricature, and the attempts at musical creativity fall flat. The next track redeems them, however, and I rise from thinking, "What a clunker!" to thinking, "These guys are great!" When the trumpet works, it is indispensible to a song.

I play this CD regularly, even if not frequently, and I enjoy it,
though is not my favorite SNG album. The laurels of that distinction rest on the brow of the giant subway ant on the cover of 'Surpass the Powers'. 'Afterlifesatisfaction' is mostly wild rock, with a few gentle, passionate songs. Overall, it is now-music full of high-voltage energy.

I'd say that a few of the tracks that insist on grabbing my ears and
demanding to be heard are 'Spaceman', 'Supergirl', 'Martha Jones', 'Totally Committed', and 'Beautiful Girl', but that would be leaving out 'Little', 'I Love You', 'Grrr', 'Ave Maria' and others.

I just start 'Afterlifesatisfation' with track two (track 1 is a 12-second burst of sonic abrasion), and play it through, taking a trip through SNG's aural landscape.

In a way, SNG are like Stephen King. King thinks he doesn't need an editor, and SNG felt they didn't need to excise a couple of tunes. Still, 'Afterlifesatisfaction's' best songs, most of the CD, make one rise and flex with the power of fine modern rock.

SNG could have gone all the way, and I hope Arno Carstens, Francious
Kruger, Theo Crous, Adriaan Brand, and Arno Blumer still soldier on in some other incarnation with who knows what other musos and band names. There is a container ship of rock talent here. I don't think Arno and the Nudies are ready for rock redundancy yet, though the band name may be retired.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music

A SHABBY LITTLE HUT - THE BATS (1965)
http://www.rock.co.za/files/bats_index.html

In this age of Eminem and Slipknot, listening to the Bats' 'A Shabby Little Hut' is like taking a break from chatting to a mass murderer to have a chat with a four year old. The difference is that stark with The Bats playing carefree, innocent music.

The album opens with the catchy title track which, with it's Tijuana brass bits is a bright and breezy pop song which has endured and endeared itself to a generation. This Shabby Hut is 'nothing fancy but it's paradise to me'. The simple pleasures is what the song and the album concentrate on. 'Shabby Little Hut' is also the only track on the album that made it onto the 'Best of the Bats' compilation CD which shows the depth of their back catalogue (or should that be bat catalogue).

Despite not being chosen for the Best of collection, there are numerous other strong tunes on the album to make for 30 minutes of pleasurable listening. Quieter ones like 'That's why I'm Low' sit comfortably next to the more up beat songs like 'Get your baggies on'.

With some fine twangy guitar and an injection of rich brass into the tunes, the Bats were the leaders of the beat sound in South Africa. Crafting fine tunes and delivering them with a sense of showmanship and professionalism, it's easy to make comparisons to the British beat groups of the early 60's. There's even a Dylan-ish feel to the closing track 'That's us' which places this album squarely in the 60's.

It's interesting to note that The Bats were only 3 letters short of being The Beatles. So close but yet so far. Still they were our fab four and they lasted longer than the Liverpool ones. However it's now nearly four decades since this album was released and while it's great to get out into the countryside and get some fresh air, life in the city must go on. Marilyn Manson anyone?

SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS: 30 YEARS AGO

9 [8] Sweet Hitch-Hiker - Creedence Clearwater Revival
10 [9] Hey - Hedgehoppers*

* South African Artists

Charisma came crashing into the charts with the infectious 'Mammy Blue'. Producer Grahame Beggs (produced Clout, Circus and The Flames to name a few) was the mastermind behind this SA classic. Entering the top 20 at number 7 meant that this song was surely one to watch.

But while Charisma were enjoying great success, The Peanut Butter
Conspiracy's 'Hold on to What you Got' rapidly lost favour and fell out of the top 20 from number 10. Groep Twee and the Hedgehoppers were also losing favour with both heading the wrong way on the charts. Other good news stories on the SA front though were Barbara Ray who gained a place and Lincoln who entered the charts at 15.

Otherwise it was business as usual at the top with Peter Maffay who had
broken the Sweet's stranglehold on the top spot last week, retaining pole position.

5.RUK EN ROL MUSIEK

This week we introduce a brand new section to the Digest featuring Afrikaans Rock artists and written (appropriately) in Afrikaans. Content supplied by http://www.musiek.co.za.

MEL BOTES
http://www.melbotes.com

"Ek was ‘n produk van my tyd," sê hy. "Jy is laat glo ‘n man moet ‘n dokter, prokureur of onderwyser word.

6.ROCKLINE - FORUM, REQUESTS AND FEEDBACK

SAN FRANCISCO

I am currently residing in Boston, Massachusetts, previously from
SA. In the 70's David Gresham played a song on his Springbok Hits Show.
I went through all your songs on the website and come to the conclusion it must be the 1977 song by Love Generation: San Francisco '69.
Any idea where I can found it?

PARIS PRODUCER LOOKING FOR SA TALENT

I am surfing the web looking for informations about music in South Africa (especially Capetown). I am a producer in Paris, France (pop music, rock, rap, etc...). And I would like to spend some time in Capetown. I would like to know if there are good studios (protools? SSL? etc...) and as I think there are very good musicians I would like to know if you know the rates per day of guitarist, bassist, etc...

Do you by any chance know how to get hold of either a vinyl or (preferably) a CD version of "Wie is Bernoldus Niemand?". Everywhere I try is sold out and the album appears to be out of print.

7.ROCK ON - LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
--------------------------------------

SPRINGBOK NUDE GIRLS
Three Arts theatre, 6th October

The dilapidated-looking Three Arts theatre was the setting for the final SNG gig on South African soil. The support band Semisane kicked off the show at about 9:30 and started psyching up the half-full theatre with their radio-friendly brand of pop-rock. Playing all their recent hits, including the much talked about 'Life' from the Big Brother reality show, as well as one of their old Black Diamond songs, they performed a tight set to what I must say was an amazing lighting rig.

With singer Tikara wearing her alien looking shades and the rest of the band looking decidedly slick they finished off their set with a cool hip hop style song featuring a guest artist rapping away to the groove.
About half an hour later the lights dimmed a bit and the smoke machines went crazy. SNG guitarist Theo Crous strode onto the stage and started the opening chords of 'Spaceman' driving the now three quarter full theatre into a frenzy. The rest of the band joined him with the enigmatic vocalist Arno Carstens causing a roar from the audience as he leapt up to the microphone.

The thing that has always amazed me about the Nude Girls is the way they can take their heavier songs, and out of the indecipherable noise, create a twisting groove laden with feedback and that delay on the vocals that they are so famous for. They tore through a blistering set containing their more popular hits including the likes of 'Supergirl', 'Smiley skull of faith', 'X' and an absolutely brilliant version of 'Giant love affair'.

During 'I love you' they invited one of the members of Moodphase Five on stage {probably Lady E - ed} and Tim Parr {ex-Baxtop, EllaMental, Tim Parr Band & Colorfields - ed} and the violinist from Sons of Trout were guests on 'Little'. I don’t know if the two girls dancing topless on stage during one of the songs were exactly guests but they got a good audience response. About halfway through the set Arno took a sentimental moment to thank the people that had been involved with the Nude Girls over the span of their existence including their manager Franie Kotze, the people from Sony and of course the loads of adoring fans.

Their encore included the great 'Blue eyes' and they left the stage leaving behind an ecstatic audience and a massive hole in the South African music scene. I believe their breaking up now, despite what some people might say, is probably a good thing. In the words of their manager they had reached the pinnacle of the S.A. music scene and had not managed to crack it overseas and as the saying goes "It’s better to burn out than to fade away."

I SAW THE NUDES TODAY.... OH BOY
13th October

The English Army has just gone to war, but a crowd of South Africans stood and stared. Well actually they did more than stare, they bounced, they shouted, they whistled, screamed and sang along at the tops of their voices for tonight was the night of the Nudies. And what a night it was.

From the moment I arrived at the Shepherd's Bush Empire you could feel the expectation in the air, it was tangible. This expectation was quickly realised as the support act Anti Gravity took the stage and moved the audience from cooking to just below boiling point with their grunge rap. Then it was the turn of the Nude Girls to take the stage for the last time, an emotional moment that brought a huge roar from the 3 000 capacity crowd. Arno Carstens sporting a pair of dark glasses was rock personified, sublimely cool and in excellent growling voice while Theo Crous on guitar was simply awesome, even doing a bit of crowd surfing.

It was hard to belive that this was a band about to break up. They were
tight, they were rocking and they were determined to go out on a high. From the heavy rocking grunge through the more melodic rock of 'Smiley Skull of Faith' and even taking a little time out for a couple of great acoustic tunes by Arno and Theo they had the audience eating out of their hands and raising the roof as they sang along.

You would have been hard pressed to find a disappointed soul amongst the crowd tonight. Yes the news (of the split) was rather sad, but ending this particular chapter in South African rock with the classic 'Bubblegum on my Boots' they left us with something that will stick in our minds (nothing tacky about this lot).

And as the final whistles died down, I was reminded of the euphoric feeling when the final whistle went for the Springbok Clothed Men at that Rugby World Cup final. Exhausting but hugely satisfying. As one guy in the crowd commented 'I've never experienced anything like that in my life!' and I would agree, it was nothing short of awesomely spectacular. A fitting farewell for South Africa's finest.

ROXY RHYTHM BAR TO SHOWCASE ZEN ARCADE
19 OCTOBER

Friday 19 October sees the eagerly anticipated return of Zen Arcade to the Roxy Rhythm Bar in Melville. The Jo’burg based original rock quartet has quickly risen to prominence in the past few months - their debut single, 'Crazy Over You', has achieved Number 1 position on the 5fm Top 40, a rare accomplishment for a South African act. Rested and refreshed after wowing crowds in Nelspruit (where they played with the Springbok Nude Girls) and at Woodstock 3, the band promises to deliver an uncompromisingly powerful performance, showcasing songs from their critically acclaimed album, ‘Snowflake’ as well as some exciting new material.

Some critical responses to ‘Snowflake’:

"... this debut sets new standards for South African rock albums... definitely the best South African rock album of 2001." Bill Botes, http://www.emergingsounds.com

"Hopefully they can be heard internationally as well, ‘cause they are right up there." Lizl Strauss, Stage Magazine http://www.stage.co.za

"...music this inspired is so infrequent and rare." Jason Curtis, Top 40 Magazine

Fans eager for a pre-taste of Zen Arcade can tune in to 5fm at 1.30pm the same day for a rare live unplugged performance.

Date: 19 October 2001
Doors at the Roxy Rhythm Bar open at 8:00, admittance is R25

STEVE NEWMAN AND TONY COX - GUITARS!

In South Africa, there are two names inextricably linked in people’s minds with that of guitar playing and we’re not talking average guitar players here, we’re talking exceptional. In the 21 years that have gone by since Steve Newman and Tony Cox first began playing together they have become legends of the instrument in their own right.

Each have pursued highly successful performance and recording careers, with Steve Newman and his band Tananas now on a performing circuit that is world-wide, and Tony Cox’s ‘Matabele Ants’ album having just won the ‘Best Instrumental Album’ award at the recently held South African music awards.

Needless to say, each guitarist has a string of album credits to his name. But the oddity with these two soul-mates, who share a driving passion for the purity of the acoustic guitar, back to back birth-dates, and the same second name, is that besides the now legendary ‘101 Ways To Use The Acoustic Guitar’ album, made by Mountain Records in 1983 and which put both guitar players on the map, there have only been a series of tapes made and sold at the thousands of shows that followed. A second album was never made, much to the confusion of the Cox/Newman fans and largely because at the time there was no record company in the least bit interested. Until now that is.

The well-known guitar duo hit the road again with a series of concerts that will run throughout the country from October to February next year, and they kick off at the Showcase Theatre in Johannesburg. They will have with them their new album titled ‘About Time’ recorded live in the Cape Town Planetarium by record label Instinct Africaine and set for country-wide launches early 2002.

The album revisits the tunes that helped them win guitar notoriety back in the early eighties and, judging by the reaction of the audience on these recordings, the tunes have lost none of their jaw-dropping power and instead have gained from the years of endless performance.

If guitar playing is your passion, or if you just want to experience the beauty of two great South African guitarists in full flight, do not miss this show.

Date: 23-27 October
Venue: The Showcase Theatre, Banbury Cross, Jhb
Time: 20h30

3rd EAR MUSIC
http://www.3rdearmusic.com

The HYMAProject is about to re-issue a host of re-mastered CD's & CD-R's to order - including an album of 10 new songs from Brian Finch - recorded in September by Alan Judd at Leopard Moon in Gillits, kwaZuluNatal. (Leopard Moon is Terry Rosenberg & Alan Judd's new studio & music venture; the quality of Brian's CD - the first commercial production from Leopard Moon - solo, unplugged, acoustic & Finch as he should be heard - is quite spectacular). Brian's CD should be ready November / December.

3rd Ear Music gets many requests for re-issues of our early analogue albums - with the site averaging between 10 to 20 visits a day. Clem Tholet, Azumah, Colin Shamley, Sipho Mchunu & John Oakley-Smith are currently topping our request lists - and we are in the (rather slow) process of digitally re-mastering these fading magnetic tapes - both concert & studio recordings.

If you have, or know of any, additional hidden years information on these musicians - anecdotes, photos or stories lying around in an attic or memory bank - we would appreciate hearing from you. We are constantly adding to our growing database - a virtual Digital Forest of Information in Zeros & Ones. Perhaps saving a tree or two in the process? You can send via eMail - if possible. If it's an attachment, notify us (per eMail, fax or phone) first; we can't open attachments, unless we know what's in it & who it's from.

We will continue using the "trust system" of payment for CD orders - it has worked faultlessly so far. You order, we send; you receive, then pay. (We do have an online banking / credit facility, but I'm not too sure how it works & if indeed it is adequately secured).

Roger Lucey's double CD - 21 Years Down the Road - is starting to move. If you didn't hear it on Radio in South Africa Yesterday (pre-1994) you will unfortunately, not hear it on Radio Today - post 2000. However, this historic collection of 21 'documentary love & protest songs' is getting some airtime in Canada, Australia & the USA. Read the London Review by the SA Rock Digest's John Samson by clicking http://www.3rdearmusic.com/hyarchive/theroad.html

Poetry Africa 2000 is another essential collectors item - a limited edition double CD of poems about Durban, recited in concert by some of the worlds greatest living poets. Click: http://www.3rdearmusic.com/project/project701/poetry.html

Stephane Grappelli's 1976 Live Durban City Hall concert, is another double CD-R collection that is taking off. The proceeds of this late great foreign artists' sales goes into the HYMAProject; as do the 7 Shawn Phillips CD-R's that we have on offer. Have a look & listen @ http://www.3rdearmusic.com/reissue/reisssa.html
