MUSIC INDUSTRY ANTI-PIRACY CONFERENCE FOR CAPE TOWN
The international music industry's annual anti-piracy conference takes place in Cape Town this week, bringing together more than 120 industry representatives, investigators and senior enforcement officials from over 40 countries.
The conference will focus on global strategies to fight a criminal pirate business that is estimated to be worth more than US$ 4 billion a year. Three days of presentations will tackle the global fight against CD piracy, the proliferation of the CD-R disc, and progress in the fight against piracy on the internet.
Subjects discussed will include case studies of investigations from around the world; technologies in the fight against piracy; and the industry's legal and litigation strategies.
The keynote theme of the conference is "Public/Private Partnership", reflecting the growing co-operation between the industry and government and enforcement authorities across the world. Participants will include senior enforcement officials from China, Hong Kong, Mauritius and UK and the international police agency Interpol.
The conference is organised by IFPI, the international recording industry's trade organisation, and is hosted by the Recording Industry of South Africa (RISA).
Piracy is a critical issue for the music industry in South Africa, hurting artists and record companies alike. The conference will also be an opportunity to step up anti-piracy strategies at both a domestic and regional level, in co-operation with the enforcement authorities in South Africa.

There will be an informal meeting with the media, hosted by RISA, at the Mount Nelson Hotel on Thursday Oct 11 from 13H00 - 14H30 in The Lady Hamilton Room.

WATERSHED'S DEBUT GOES GOLD IN SA - GIGS ANNOUNCED

South African band Watershed's debut album, 'In The Meantime', has achieved Gold selling status with sales in excess of 25 000 units. The band, best known for their hit singles 'In The Meantime', 'Angel' and 'Indigo Girl', has taken the country by storm and are currently Top 10 on both the Musica and the official SA Album Charts this week (not to mention a consistently strong showing on the SA Rock Digest Charts!)
Watershed are Craig Hinds (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, harmonica), Paul McIver (lead guitar, vocals), Tulsa Pittaway (drums), Vernon Hodgetts (bass guitar) and Lizzie Rennie (violin, keyboard). Over the last 18 months, the band has toured South Africa extensively and was nominated for two SAMA Awards (including Best Pop Album of 2000 and Best Adult-Contemporary Album of 2000). The band also won People Magazine's Crystal Awards for SA Band of the Year 2001. On 5fm's recent SA Music Week's Top 25 Chart, Watershed had two songs - 'Indigo Girl' and 'In The Meantime' - in the Top 5.

FAREWELL STATION ROAD - WAYNE PAULI
"It's everywhere, just look around, there are pieces on the ground;
and I don't want to look around, cause I might hear the sound of crying".
For a while after that horrific day, all music seemed inappropriate and unhelpful. But then again so did all our other usual, handy healing devices. After a while the contrast between the war talk on the news and the enviable unawareness and unbelievable banality of the Big Brother guinea pigs forced us back to the CD pile for comfort. There lay this grey and white, unpretentious soft-looking album with "Farewell" in the title that just seemed the right, as-yet-unheard choice to listen to for some distractive comfort.
It turned out to be an inspired selection. 'Farewell Station Road' is mostly Cape Town-based Wayne Pauli, his very-expressive guitar and voice, and ten of his favourite original folky-blues compositions, some of them produced by the rising team at the Sunset Studios in Stellenbosch, some self-recorded on 4-track for that special 'Nebraska' feel. It's not all easy listening though, as 'Deep Black Hole' is a harrowing (black and) blues meditation on depression, with groaning guitar strings echoing in the gloom. That song arrives after the strong opening trio of the radio-friendly 'Who? (Can Relate To You)', the JJ Cale-like scorched back- and crossroads of 'Just Another Day', and the poignant violin-washed 'Your Silent Ways'.
The middle of the album is reserved for family, with tributes to Dad ('My Father', which sounds like Leonard Cohen's 'Suzanne' as recorded by Daniel Lanois), to Mom ('Santa Maria', with its haunting Spanish guitar and chorus), and Andrea ('Andrea'... about whom we are told "You know I'm so In love with you", although the album is dedicated "To Karin, with love", so I'm not getting involved here..).
'Like A Child' and 'The Sound Of Crying' add to the general downbeat emotional feel of this varied and graceful collection. Besides the obviously unintended contemporary relevance of its lyrics (quoted above), 'The Sound Of Crying' sounds like Pauli's attempt at writing the kind of song that Dylan would also tuck away at the end of an album. Certain borrowed phrases in the song ("Protect you and defend you", "...give you shelter from the storm") could also be clues as to his noble intentions here.
The extended narrative and sombre mood of the title track closes off the album, with our hero riding off into the sunset, guitar across his back. Actually, that should read, "with our hero riding out of the Sunset Studios, guitar across his back, and a (glorious) little gem of an album in his saddle bags". Welcome to Wayne's world. (8) SSS

ALTERNATIEF OP SY BESTE VOLUME 2
Despite comments about "Alt.Afr.Rock" no longer being a valid genre (see an Afrikaans article by Dirk Uys, at: http://www.rock.co.za/files/boereplaas1.html), Hoezit Musiek have decided to release a Volume 2 after the success of the compilation CD 'Alternatief Op Sy Beste' last year.
A few issues ago we talked about the "A to Z of Afrikaner Rock" (see issue #121 <http://www.sarockdigest.com/archives/issue_121.html>) citing Akkedis and Karen Zoid as 2 of the pioneers in the newest wave of Afrikaner Rock. Both these artists have hit the number 1 spot on the SA Rock Digest album charts in recent weeks. On the 'Alternatief Op Sy Beste Volume 2' compilation are tracks from both those recent chart-topping albums; 'Jannie Cocaine' is taken from Akkedis' driving 'Voortvlugtend' album and Karen Zoid's 'Maak Nie Regtig Saak Nie' is taken from her stunning debut CD 'Poles Apart'.
There are also 17 other great tracks; some old (Piet Botha's 'Staan Saam Burgers' from his classic 'Suitcase Vol Winter' CD, 'Onder in my whiskeyglas' from Koos Kombuis), some new (Mel Botes' 'Reënvoëls' and the aforementioned 'Jannie Cocaine' by Akkedis, both currently on the Digest song charts), some borrowed (Wouter van der Venter's cover of Koos Kombuis' 'Johnny is nie dood nie' and David Kramer's 'Stanley en die Koei' which "borrows" its tune from the old Irish folk-song 'Whisky in the Jar') and some blues ('Tiger and Louise' from Spinnekop and 'Joey' from Dozi).
This album also includes tracks by Ricky Conn (the wonderful 'Stellenbosch se spoke'), Johannes Kerkorrel ('Energie'), Voël, The Buckfever Underground, Mathys Roets (with the lively 'Vodka') and Khaki Monitor with 'Warrelwind'.

THE MANIC ADVENTURES OF THE MOOG AND THE MELLOTRON (PART 1)
In the present-day ambient revolution very few would venture or re-wind to the minimalist root that emancipated the seventies and dissipated in the nineties. During the dominating Hammond organ era of the nineteen fifties and sixties a large range of smaller organs would challenge the giant, namely Wurlitzer, Lowry and the Farfisa and Vox continental organs. We focus on one keyboard that bridged the gap between the organ and the synthesizer, namely the Mellotron. Invented in 1962 by Bill Fransen, it received a electronic face-lift in 1964 known as the Mark 2. Although the instrument was monophonic, it became a very popular instrument during the progressive rock explosion of the early seventies.
Its first commercial exposure could be sourced on "Strawberry Fields Forever" by the Beatles, yet by the mid-seventies it weighed 300 pounds and was known as the Mark 5. The mellotron sound projected a character that was synonymous with the German group Tangerine Dream. Keyboard maestro Rick Wakeman utilised the Mark 5 during his recordings of "The Six Wives of Henry the VIII". The 1967 recording "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" was largely the influence of minimalist composers Cage and Stockhausen. Although it has been ranked as the best audio milestone of the times, if one listens closely, in particular the poorly recorded "Fixing a Hole", one realises that much of the splendour of this album was based on marketing hype. A more credible focus should be given to the album "Freak Out" by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention who utilised a variety of sounds which included the likes of Kim Fowley on hypophone. The genius of this album largely eclipses the Beatles's "Sgt. Pepper's", all considering that it was released one year before in 1966.
A more deliberate use of the mellotron could be heard on the 1967 Hendrix track, "The Burning of the Midnight Lamp" which comprised of the electric harpsichord and mellotron sampling. One of the most magnificent manipulations of the mellotron is displayed on a 1969 debut album "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson. Flautist Ian McDonald defines the sound of King Crimson by weaving magical spells throughout the album. The entirety of this album captures the awe inspiring musicianship of jazz drummer Mike Giles and the excellent bass and vocals of Greg Lake. Robert Fripp's electric guitar could move from harmonious tranquility to a devastating onslaught of electric tenacity. Although the influence of the album is largely based in Stravinsky's works, it remains a cornerstone in the electronic adventure of the mellotron. Occasionally the mellotron would
commercialise as in the birth of glam rock with the release of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" single in 1969. Rick Wakeman would carry his virtuosity into the next stage of his career by utilising the mellotron with the rock group Yes. But it was the 1975 "Myths and Legends of King Arthur" where Rick would release the power of two mellotron 400s and every other capable mini Moog available to him.

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
JEREMY TAYLOR - AG PLEEZ DEDDY

For a Texan like me this is twice the CD than it is for y'all. For me, this CD is both a collection of entertaining folk songs and a window into a certain time in South Africa's past. The Puritan-practical side of me is pleased to listen to music and to learn something at the same time.
Sometimes I need to know something about a subject before I can see it at all. Meaning: I don't yet get all the jokes, cultural nuances, and accents on the CD 'Ag Pleez Deddy'. Some things I'm sure I don't even notice because, out of ignorance, I'm blind to their existence, even when they're right in my ears, so to speak.
Having announced my ignorance, I still didn't need any special training to enjoy the title track on this Best of collection by Jeremy Taylor, 'Ballad of the Southern Suburbs'. I still laugh along with Jeremy's audience.
Sure, the slang (such as all of it!) was nearly undecipherable at first, but by the context I made reasonable Americanism substitutions. For example, I could figure out, "...'Cause Willy's gonna donder that blerry Yankee!" But for others ("Mura on the ugies next door"?) I needed to call in professional Souf Africans for help.
A number of the songs are liner-notes-described as banned when first
released, or not even released. They seem harmless enough now. Time and
space diminishes danger, I suppose, but I also suppose that at one time the TNT-labelled powderkeg Jeremy is sitting on might have been real enough. I know enough to know that.
Most all of these songs are folk-style: an ou standing up before an
audience, playing an acoustic guitar and entertaining with his engaging
lyrics. There are some departures from the folk standard, though, such as the pennywhistle 'Tsotsi Style' number with Lemmy "Special" Mabaso.
Other songs are topical, dealing with news and issues of the day. They
remain interesting, though more as time capsules than as timeless tunes.
It's Jeremy Taylor's lively wit that I enjoy best. Of course, there's the title track, then there's the self-parody of 'The Ballad of the Northern Suburbs', followed by 'Lift Girls Lament', 'Northern Side of Town', 'Go for the Gap!', and 'Safe My Mate'.
There are things on earth Yankees weren't meant to know, though. I may
understand much of 'Ag Pleez Deddy', but beyond the basic story, 'My Doll's House' remains incomprehensible. Is there something here I'm missing? Also, 'Transplant Calypso' is meant to be satirical, but lacks relevance in a world where transplants are routine, thanks to the late Dr. Barnard.
Understandably, many of Taylor's songs are earnest pleas for us to make
tomorrow's world a better place. The more serious issues addressed are
segregation and conscription -- which were also topics in folk songs here in the USA. In both our countries, these issues created temporary rips to make a new social fabric. In Jeremy's hands these divisive issues aren't inflammatory, but fun to discuss.
Even in his songs with serious themes, the light touch is foremost -- there is nothing heavy, pedantic, or preachy in Mr. Taylor's deliveries of songs containing liberal doses of social consciousness. Satirical songs, such as 'Black and White Calypso', 'Hennie Van Saracen', and 'Bonzifar the Baboon', make us laugh while making us think of ourselves at the same time.
The serious songs here are still easy to listen to. 'Confession' is a
cleverly written song wherein the word play and unexpected rhymes hold the attention and deliver the story, or message, if you will, in a dose if not sweet then one easy to swallow. 'Mommy I'd Like to Be' is such a song.
Taylor intends 'Clifton Beach' to be critical of the old men watching the girls, I suppose, but as a subject I'd like to touch upon, it only makes me want to visit Clifton Beach....
Taylor demonstrates that serious social topics are best expressed with a light touch. Make people laugh at themselves to make them think about
themselves. People are funny creatures, and if we can laugh at ourselves with no harm done, then maybe laughter can heal everyone within the sound of the sensible, and humorous, voice.
I have a fair ear for American accents, and I know that England has more accents than just Cockney and Constipated. But after listening to this CD I wonder: Out of 16 tracks, how many South African accents does Jeremy actually sing in, anyway? Gosh, there almost seems to be a new accent for each song.
Though I listen mostly to SA rock and pop, I have learned that to completely study all styles of South African music one needs to be not only a musicologist but an ethnologist as well. But even for an ignorant Yankee, 'Ag Pleez Deddy' by Jeremy Taylor is not only fun and easy to listen to, but a musical book that helped me learn more about South Africa.
Some of the songs may have lost their punch over the years, but certainly not the title track. At best this CD is laughter-provoking, and at worst pleasant folk. Has 'Ag Pleeze Deddy' changed my life? For one thing, I've added "Go for the gap!" to my vocabulary.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
WINGERD ROCK 2 (SQUEEZE MY TROS) - VARIOUS (Trippy Grape)
Two years after the first CD in this series, Dirk Uys and his Trippy Grape mates released Wingerd Rock 2. The format was the same, 18 tracks featuring 2 each by 9 acts. The only difference this time was that the net was widened from Stellenbosch to include the Western Cape and the Boland.
Although the album doesn't feature big names like Koos Kombuis and Valiant Swart (though Valiant does guest on Raaskopleef's tunes), this is not just a bunch of also-rans. There are tracks by the early version of Dorp, the soon-to-become-Akkedis Dennis Brothers and the much touted Honeymoon Suites.
Once again the sound is generally grunge rock, but this compilation has a fair smattering of Ska sounds (mainly due to a proliferation of saxophone) and even 2 reggae tracks by Ras Tamie. Dorp and the Honeymoon Suites are the most Ska-ish while the grunge comes from Government Car, Sunfish and 508. Both the Dennis Brothers and Calamity Jane offer pleasant rock and the latter features some great vocals from Mandy Currie.
There is a good mix of English and Afrikaans lyrics. My favourite lyric being in the Honeymoon Suites 'Just another notch in my Bedpost' which goes "just another hair on my chest now baby". Boy, do those guys know how to make a girl feel special or what.
This is as good a collection of tunes as the first compilation and it's now 3 years since it's release and no Wingerd Rock 3. Come on Dirk, we want another helping of the Grapest Hits of the Western Cape.

For Sweet haters, this must have been a great week as their stranglehold on the top spot was broken by Peter Maffay. They had spent 14 consecutive weeks at number 1, 6 weeks with 'Funny Funny' and 8 with 'Co Co'. This was the longest unbroken run by any artist at the top and included a week where they held the number 1 and number 2 spot..
Creedence Clearwater enjoyed their 9th top 10 hit in 3 years as 'Sweet
Hitch-Hiker' climbed to 8 while the no longer "anonymous" Hedgehoppers were also enjoying top 10 status with 'Hey'.
John Kongos dropped out of the top 20 after having spent 11 weeks on the charts and peaking at number 2 with 'He's gonna step on you again'. He was replaced in the charts by France's Danyel Gerard with his hit 'Butterfly'.

NUDIES TO END OFF IN LONDON
The Springbok N*de Girls will be performing their last ever gig at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London on Sat 13th October. Saturday night (7th) saw them bidding a frenzied farewell to all their Cape fans with an electric and sentimental set at the Three Arts in Plumstead.
For this final N*de Girls gig in South Africa, as part of ‘The Fat Lady Sings’ tour, singer Arno Carstens led the fired-up Stellenbosch five-piece through a selection of their finest moments from their four albums and five EP’s released over the past five years. Favourites like ‘Baby Murdered Me’, ‘Supergirl’, Spaceman’, ‘Ricochet’, ‘Lonely’, ‘Smiley Skull Of Faith’ and others, were all given the usual sonic hurricane treatment. A large and vocal crowd created one final, traditional, South African, swirling N*de Girls mosh pit and gave a roaring send-off to this adored band that has ruled the SA rock roost from the mid-‘90’s with power, class and great music.
So cheers and salutations to Francious Kruger, Theo Crous, Adriaan Brand, Arno Blumer, and Arno Carstens (and Franie Kotze!). As you all move off into new paths, may the bubblegum of life stay far away from your boots!
New SA pop sensations, Semisane, played the support slot and displayed their growing maturity and confidence with a solid hit-studded set. Rapper Redds joined the band for a performance of their current SA smash hit ‘Life’ (the theme from ‘Big Brother’).
Tickets for the N*de Girls London concert are £12 advance and £14 at the door. All ticket holders will receive free entrance to Bushed Out Night Club (worth £5) after the show.
The doors open at 6:30pm, it’s an early start. The support band is Anti Gravity.

November sees the first ever staging of the Monsters of Rock show in South Africa, presenting Motorhead, DIO and Jerusalem in a three-city tour.
Monsters of Rock is a tour made up of three of the biggest rock bands from around the world. For the first time ever heavy metal lovers have the privilege to watch legends Motorhead, Jerusalem and DIO live.
Motorhead were formed in 1975 in London. Their extremely loud and fast style of heavy metal was one of the most groundbreaking styles of the ‘70s and have melded punk influences with metal to create a distinctive sound. The group’s leader, Lemmy Kilminster, had his roots in Hawkwind and Motorhead were the first group to create speed-metal and thrash-metal. Lemmy has remained at the healm of Motorhead for
many years and even though the line-up has changed many times, the raging sound has never changed. Lemmy continues to make music for the leather-clad masses and their performance promises to be a hectic and hard one not to be missed.
Ronnie James Dio, a well-known figure in the heavy metal world, has sung with Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow and Black Sabbath and formed DIO in 1983. DIO was one of the top metal bands during the ‘80s and after many break-ups and getting back together the band finally resurfaced again in 2000 with their album 'Magica'. Ronnie James Dio also appeared with Deep Purple recently as part of their Concerto 30th Anniversary tour. Fans are in for a treat from this top heavy metal band whose menacing and rowdy tones come through in their music.
Jerusalem is a hard rock Christian band from Sweden and is made up of Dan, Klas, Anders and Ulf. Jerusalem has received a lot of criticism in their radical proclamation of Jesus. Jerusalem address the youth and after a long uphill struggle to get recognised they released ‘Jerusalem’. Their latest album ‘Those were the Days’ delivers the message that heavy music will again bring with it a heavy message. South Africans prepare yourself for a totally unique heavy rock experience.

Friday 28 September saw Zen Arcade playing back to back with the legendary Springbok N*de Girls, the two bands performing to a frenzied 1200-strong crowd at The Blue Moon in Nelspruit, as part of the
Nudies' swansong tour. As if spurred by the news of the SNG disbanding (still relatively fresh), the crowd partied harder than ever.
Woodstock 3 - Saturday 29 September - Rushing straight from Nelspruit to Joburg and thence to Heidelburg, Zen Arcade arrived for their 2.45pm slot with just minutes to spare, to deliver a blistering set to the festival crowd, gently baking in the 30-degree sunshine! By all accounts ZA impressed the crowd strongly. Other highlights of the Saturday line-up were Sunways' incendiary performance, the relentlessly grooving BVK and the Springbok N*de Girls, who did not let stage sound hassles get in the way of a powerfully driving, kick-ass set.
