RODRIGUEZ: RATHER LATE THAN NEVER
"Woke up this moming with an ache in my head
Splashed on my clothes as I spilled out of bed"
Many music fans and critics have tried to prove over the years that Elvis and Jim Morrison are still alive. However with Rodriguez the opposite is true; on his last tour to South Africa in 1998 a number of people didn't attend his gigs because they believed he was dead. Well as his wife Konnie quipped, "Dead Men Don't Tour!". That also became the title of the excellent TV documentary shown on SABC 3 in July this year.
And there were many rumours of his demise once again as he missed 3 flights from his hometown of Detroit on his way to South Africa this past week. In an effort to convince the assembled and very dubious press at the Westcliff Hotel press conference on Wednesday evening Rodriguez sang "I Wonder" over a cellphone from JFK airport accompanied by the Big Town Playboys who had already arrived in SA. A surreal moment, to be sure.
"Rodriguez lives the kind of life he sings about," said the tour promoters. "He is against the establishment, suffers hangovers now and again and takes little notice of bureaucracy and schedules."

ROXYS ROCKS AGAIN
Roxys, one of Gauteng's most celebrated live music venues, is rocking big time once more.
The recent Woodstock 3 Warm-Up gig confirmed this to even the most hardened sceptic and Roxys are also playing host to Saron Gas and Boo! in the weeks to come and needless to say these are two of SA's elite live acts.
Roxys and Zer02Her0 celebrate Spring and the end of Winter passed's bitter cold fronts by putting on a special concert - hotROX Spring Festival - at the Melville venue on Saturday September 15. We have gathered some of the most exciting acts from rock, hip-hop, ska and folk for your listening pleasure.
Here's who you will seeing on the day:
ZEN ARCADE
Now in the 5FM top 5 with their cracking single 'Crazy Over You', Zen
Arcade are fully expected to follow in Saron Gas' footsteps as SA's Next Band To Make It Big Overseas. Their tightly played, well-structured, complex and engagingly melodic songs are finding their way into the minds and hearts of South Africans. Live, they are master craftsmen complimented by charismatic frontman Iain Mackenzie. Band of the moment.
EVENFLOW
Cutting-edge melodic rock band making waves on the gig circuit. Led by
their easy-on-the-eye female vocalist, Melody Kaye, Evenflow deliver hummable rock with an exciting edge. Band to watch.
THREE WEEKS ANAEMIC
Explosive hip-hop/rock crossover crew that deliver deadly shards of searing riffs and dramatic vocals that swoop from hoarse yells to mellifluous crooning. Modern rock for the Deftones generation.
340ML
Tight ska-dub four-piece that entertain and amaze with their experimental bent and funkified beats. The 340ml rhythm team lay down an immaculate groove that provides the rockbed for their guitarist to launch spacey sound-washes and the vocalist to draw the crowd in. Exercise for the ears and mind.
BASEMENTAL PLATFORM
Exciting nine-man socially conscious hip-hop collective walk the walk and talk the talk. No relevant issue escapes their penetrating gaze and the assembled MCs spit flowing verses that inform as well as entertain.
Basemental Platform bring the ruckus ... and how.
HALF MAN-HALF BEETLE
Andrew Kay's wonderful songs given a stripped-down treatment with acoustic guitar, sonorous violin - immaculately played by Louise Drosdzol - and the occasional big beat or hip-hop backing. Half Man-Half Beetle have reached the semis of the Emerging Sounds Lyrical Songwriter's competition. Come and see why.

THE HEART AND SOUL OF BILLY FORREST
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/billyforrest
This 2CD compilation could also have been titled 'The Many Faces Of Billy Forrest' as it features William Charles Boardman in many guises over it's 55 tracks. Billy was born in Kimberley in the early 1940s and had his first hit single in SA in 1961 when 'Dark Lonely Night' recorded with the Giants hit #1. His chart success continued under various names such as Quentin E Klopjaeger (remember 'Lazy Life?'), The Dream Merchants (the wonderful Righteous Brothers-style 'Time And The River'), Dennis ('Joey, The Lipstick Collector', anyone?), William E and Geli & Billy. He has also sung duets with Sharon Tandy & Joanna Field and during the 80s he reformed the Dream Merchants with Bobby Louw.
Billy has also produced some great names in SA's pop and rock history including McCully Workshop's 1st album 'McCully Workshop Inc.', 'Cry To Me' by the Staccatos, 'Tchaikovsky One' by Omega Limited, 'The Warrior' by Ipi Tombi featuring the vocal talents of the late Margaret Singana and a band called Sound Reason whose lead vocalist was one "Mutt" Lange!
This wonderful retrospective collection was compiled by Malcolm Lombard and the very informative and candid biography was written by Billy himself. Many album cover pics are included and the extensive discography was researched by SA Rock Files website archivist Tertius Louw.
This CD is only currently available from Books and Music Africa.

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------
SHILOH'S CORNER
COLOSSEUM
the brass fusion of blues
The acceptance of jazz rock in the UK was far and few between. Ronnie Scott's had no interest in the new expounding sounds that these long haired hippies were experimenting with. Speckled surges would occasionally dot the horizon - Dick Morrissey's If, SA-born Chris McGregor's Brotherhood of Breath (Chris played on Nick Drake's 'Bryter Layter' album), Keef Hartley and the avant-garde Circus by Mel Collins. Yet the nucleus of jazz rock has its source with a thoroughbred group of veterans known as Colosseum. The core of this group had initially featured on John Mayall's "Bare Wires" album comprising of Jon Hiseman on drums, Dick Heckstall-Smith on saxophone, Dave Greenslade on keyboards, Tony Reeves on bass, and James Litherland on guitar/vocals. Their debut album "Those who are about to die, salute you" smashed the structures of jazz in the UK. The year was 1969 and this particular album showcased each individual musician, fusing drum solo's, organ and bass patterns with deliberate wah-wah guitar. The core of the album was strongly influenced by Heckstall-Smith who started out with Chris Barber in the fifties, yet seasoned his talents in Graham Bond's Organisation and Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated.
The album explodes with an opening track called "Walking in the park" written by Graham Bond, reflecting the elaborate jazz body drumming by Jon Hiseman. From the avant-garde jazz rhythms to the Bach-influenced "Ides of March" (also known as "Whiter Shade of Pale"), Colosseum claim royalty in the world of jazz rock. An outstanding blues track by Leadbelly called "Backwater Blues" featured a rather unknown guitarist called Jim Roche. Within the same year, Colosseum released their "Valentyne Suite" masterpiece. Dave Litherland was replaced by a more pronounced blues guitarist called David Clemson. Furthermore the three octave ability of Chris Farlow from the Thunderbirds gave the album a harder edge than their previous work. Although "Valentyne Suite" leans more towards rock, the sixteen minute concept track called "Valentyne Suite" which included the service of Neill Ardley and the National Jazz Orchestra is one of the finest fusion of Hammond B3, guitar, saxophone and drum. Jazz bassist Tony Reeves was also displaced by the more rock orientated Mark Clarke. In 1971 their live album expressed the essence of Colosseum in true vibrant fashion. Mark Clarke and John Hiseman left shortly afterwards and formed the progressive Tempest. Mark joined Uriah Heep for three months, but before he left them he co-wrote the classic 'The Wizard' with Ken Hensley.
The power of Colosseum under the masterful pyrotechnics of John Hiseman remains unchallenged as a brass inferno of the late sixties. Little did John Mayall know what he would give birth to. Colosseum reformed in the nineties with the original line-up from "Valentyne Suite" and proceeded to pack the halls wherever they went. These old dog soldiers of brass only got better in time.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
THE HEART AND SOUL OF FOUR JACKS AND A JILL (Gallo CDREDD 661)
While primarily a rock fan, I make occasional reckless swerves into
happy pop territory. My favorite aural landscape of that region is Four
Jacks and a Jill. Since I own all of their CDs I am constantly seeking new Four Jacks and a Jill songs.
So it was a thrill to discover this surprise double CD that recently
slipped quietly onto the market. I hope the many Four Jacks and a Jill fans worldwide hear of it and make it a good seller like their two 'Very Best of' packages.
Predictably, all the old favorite hit songs are on 'The Heart and Soul
of Four Jacks and a Jill'. There's 'Master Jack', 'Timothy', 'Jimmy Come Lately', 'House with the White-washed Gables', Mr. Nico', and many others. All old friends come to visit again.
The delightful news is that the second disc has 21 tracks previously
unavailable on CD. Until this release, one had to be a diligent and lucky vinyl collector to find these perky, smiling tunes. Though I already owned the songs on the first disc, and a few on the second, the 21 "new" songs on the second disc are worth the price of admission.
Some of these "new" songs are 'Jingle Jangle', 'Puppy Love', 'Wake Up
John Peter', and 'A Better World Tomorrow'. One track is odd though, it has a male lead singer. It sounds like Five Jacks, with Jill adding only a few vocal frills. It's an okay song, and the Jacks are a tight band, but Glenys Lynne's beautiful voice is why I buy Four Jacks and a Jill.
Whoever arranged the track order (Malcolm Lombard?) remembered that the
hits are available on other CDs, even if they certainly also belong on this Heart and Soul edition. So Disc 1 is full of the hits, while most of Disc 2 has songs previously unavailable in digital form. This is the disc many Four Jacks and a Jill fans will pop in first, as I did.
Additionally, the liner notes are an updated and expanded version of
those appearing in 'The Very Best of Four Jacks and a Jill Volume 1', and some new photos are included. A neat part of the 20 page booklet is a double page spread reproducing 17 Four Jacks and a Jill album covers and The Zombies' album (the group before Glenys Lynne joined). Their back catalog has many more LP jackets than this, but these 18 are a pleasure to see.
Another plus on this double CD is that I finally heard Glenys Lynne
singing Christian praise songs. The mini-set of four songs sounds lovely. The Lord doesn't mind one who sings praise like a velvet frog as I do, but her beautiful voice graces the songs and makes them high praise indeed.
It's a good day, a happy day for smiling, when one receives new Four
Jacks and a Jill music from the sunny side of somewhere.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
THE SIDNEY SESSIONS - VARIOUS ARTISTS
In late 1987 the first of a series of albums featuring local unsigned bands was released. Called the Sidney Sessions, these were the brainchild of Radio 5's Rafe Levine and Craig Beyrooti. The aim was to promote local music and with the backing of Levine, a couple of the tracks from this album charted on the Radio 5 charts ('The Scheme of Things' by Sean Fury {son of world-famous jazz guitarist Johnny Fourie - ed} went to number 9 while Jax Myth's 'Jazz Collection' made it to number 4).
There are a variety of styles on the album, but the most predominant is a sort of lounge jazz type sound quite reminiscent of Shakatak, particularly the tracks by Mac the Nite and the instrumental piece by Cadillac. However, there is the quirky punk of Woke Up Wasted, the harder rock sound of South of Africa and the Siouxsie Sioux-ish (warning do not attempt this phrase when under the influence of alcohol) vocals on the track by Distant Calling to keep it interesting.
Generally speaking, the production on the album is pretty raw, which adds weight to the unsigned label attached to the bands. However this does not detract from that fact that there were some accomplished song writers lurking in various corners of the country. A few names listed in the credits are familiar, Nick Matzukis from the Helicopters bangs the drums for Special Envoy, Angie Peach does backing vocals for Sean Fury who's 'The Scheme of Things' was co-written by his brother-in-law Mick Jade, and Kate Normington and one time Midnight Masser Terence Reis make up the vocal content of Jax Myth's 'Jazz Collection'.
Few of these bands went on to bigger and better things, and listening to this album now, it sounds dated and lightweight. Despite this, it is an important record of what the sleeve notes refer to as 'musical groundswell' of the late 80s in South Africa. A good idea and a perfect album for someone interested in the SA pop scene of that era. Imagine if someone had had the foresight to do this in the late 60s and early 70s, how many 'lost' bands wouldn't be so lost now?

SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS: 30 YEARS AGO

This week [last week] Title - Artist
1 [1] Co Co - The Sweet
2 [3] You - Peter Maffay
3 [2] He's Gonna Step On You Again - John Kongos*
4 [4] I Did What I Did For Maria - Tony Christie

7 [6] Rain, Rain, Rain - Gentle People*
8 [8] Lady Rose - Mungo Jerry
9 [9] Me And Bobby McGee - Gordon Lightfoot
10 [10] How Can You Mend A Broken Heart - Bee Gees
* South African Artists
While the Sweet enjoyed their 11th straight week at no. 1 (5 with 'Co Co' and 6 with 'Funny Funny') John Kongos' challenge began to fade and the new contender for the top spot came in the form of Romanian born, but essentially German, Peter Maffay. After the success of 'You' Maffay seemed to be obsessed with getting the word into his song titles as the English translation of other songs by him were "You are Different' and 'Who are You'.
After dropping a bit, Peanut Butter Conspiracy made a second challenge on the top by bouncing up 2 places to 5. Meanwhile Gentle People continued to fall slowly. In the lower reaches of the charts, 'Never Ending Song of Love' was making a double appearance. The New Seeker's versions which had been a hit in the UK was at number 20 while at 19 was the hit version from the other side of the Atlantic by Delaney & Bonnie (Delaney Bramlett and his wife Bonnie Lynn Bramlett). The other new entry into the top 20 was Creedence Clearwater Revival's 9th hit in 3 years 'Sweet Hitch Hiker'. These 3 new entries came at the expense of 3 local hits with Lauren Copley, Tidal Wave and Dennis (aka Billy Forrest) falling out the charts.
South African at Number 1 this week:
Clap your Hands and Stamp your Feet - Maria (1973)
Ramaja - Glenys Lynne (1976)
Paradise Road - Joy (1980)
Woodpecker from Space - Café Society (1985)

BLONDIE CHAPLIN APPEARS ON JAPANESE ROCK ALBUM
Throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s ex-Flames and Beach Boys lead vocalist
Blondie Chaplin was a prolific and versatile session and backing musician for an amazing number of artists, ranging from the little-known, like Freida Parton (yes, Dolly's sister) to the extremely well-known, like the Rolling Stones.
Blondie Chaplin added his vocals to a Bonnie Raitt album, which also
featured Small Faces' Ian McLagan and Japanese Sadistic Mika Band
bass-player Ray Ohara. Later when Ray Ohara made his solo album 'Picaresque' for Japan-only release, he asked and got the services of Bonnie Raitt and Blondie Chaplin to help him colour the album in. Blondie takes the lead vocal on every track, making this almost a hitherto unknown Blondie Chaplin solo album.
Regrettably the album has sunk into obscurity since its release by
Eastworld/Toshiba-EMI in 1988, making it almost impossible to find a copy without keen contacts in Japan. I am deeply indebted to my new Japanese E-Friend, Masamichi, for his persistence in finding me one, in the Tokyo bargain bins.
The album has a strong rich late 80's high tech sound with thundering bass and drums. Some of the songs have an unmistakeable and understandable J-Rock feel to them, occasionally sounding like 80's Gino Vannelli. There is one goosebump tearjerker ballad entitled 'All My Love' which is this albums crowning jewel, with Blondie Chaplin at his awesome best. Certainly, all Blondie Chaplin fans should try to locate a copy. Good hunting.
Details: 'Picaresque' by Ray Ohara, Eastworld CD CT32-5090, released 1988.

THE A TO Z OF AFRIKANER ROCK
by Braai N Karring
The newest wave of Afrikaner Rock seems to start with an "A" (Akkedis [Afrikaans for "Lizard"]) and ends with a "Z" (Karen Zoid).
The new CD from Stellenbosch boys Akkedis 'Voortvlugtend' includes songs about Stellenbosch, getting stopped at roadblocks and the dangers of cocaine abuse. Highly recommended (the CD, not cocaine abuse). On her debut release 'Poles Apart', rock chick Karen Zoid sings in both English and Afrikaans about travelling through the Karoo under southern skies, being a waitress and bad taxi drivers (there are goods one?) and she rocks... big time.
Where to begin to discover this unique genre? Alt.Afr.Rock is not a genre of one musical style, but rather many styles with one big thing in common: Attitude. The best place to start to discover this attitude of "telling-it-like-it-is" is on the 'Alternatief Op Sy Beste' compilation CD from Hoezit Music released last year. The early pioneers like David Kramer, Anton Goosen and Bernoldus Niemand (James Phillips) are here as well as Johannes Kerkorrel, Koos Kombuis, Valiant Swart and Piet Botha. Bands like Voël, The Radiators, Akkedis and Battery 9 also get a track each.
The 2 'Tassenberg All Stars' live compilations from Trippy Grape and Rhythm Records are also a great introduction to musicians like Jack Hammer featuring Piet Botha (still going strong after more than 20 years, watch out for his 'Best Of' coming out soon on EMI), Valiant Swart, Koos Kombuis, Beeskraal, Not My Dog and many others.
In the early 80s the band Wildebeest (featuring Piet Botha and Freedoms Child Colin Pratley and produced by Anton Goosen) combined boeremusiek with rock and sang songs about real life in South Africa. Tracks like 'Hottentotsgot' (Praying Mantis), 'Mynhope In Die Bosveld', 'Bossies' (the army guys will understand this term) and 'Horings Op Die Stoep' (a medley of traditional boeremusiek songs with rock guitar) are unfortunately still unreleased on CD, but Beeskraal have captured this spirit of what Koos Kombuis calls Boerepunk and have made the banjo and the concertina the new icons of rock, I kid you not.
So if you want to hear songs about life and living in South Africa today, make sure your sense of humour is in full working order, dump any old pre- and mis-conceptions and buy these CDs... as Koos Kombuis sings (as do Not My Dog): "Ek is verslaaf aan Ruk en Rol"!

ZIMBABWE CHARTS
In my research into South African artists who charted in Zimbabwe on the singles charts during the period 1962 to 1980, there are some names which do not appear in the Chilvers/Jasiukowicz book about SA music {History of Contemporary Music of South Africa, TOGA 1994 - ed}. If anyone has any information concerning these artists, please contact me. Many thanks in advance for any help received.
AEROPHONE
Charted April 1972 with "Sweet Sweet Suzie"
Released on RPM. RPM 357. Other artists who charted on the RPM label at around the same time were: Gentle People, The Bats, Eddie Eckstein, Dan Hill. Perhaps they remember something about Aerophone?
Ray CURTIS
Charted October 1968 with "Flowers" (Pye. PYS 194) and with the Top 3 hit, "One day of your life" (MvN. MVS 302) in October 1970. The latter was produced by Grahame Beggs. Other artists with hits on the MvN label at around the same time were Gwynneth Ashley-Robin and Bernie Brown. Does anybody know anything about Ray Curtis?
The DREAMERS
Charted in 1978 with various hits (cover versions of songs by WINGS and SMOKIE) on the BULLET label (same label as Richard Jon SMITH). They were possibly a band who recorded as session musicians for the SPRINGBOK HITS album series. Due to sanctions at the time, most songs from the EMI and related labels could not be released here until 1981. Hence we had cover versions of the songs concerned and some of them charted. The cover versions, like those mentioned here, are believed to have originated from RSA and were probably the recordings used on the SPRINGBOK HITS albums, although this is not certain.
EX-RAY
Charted in March 1980 with "The part of me that needs you most" (cover version of the hit by EXILE) on TRUTONE. TOS 1239.
Bobby FRASER
Charted Nov. 1974 with ELDORADO on POLYDOR. PS 362, originally a German composition, with English lyrics by John Edmond. John Edmond thinks Bobby Fraser came from the UK. Does anybody know anything more? Could this be the Bobby Fraser who was once a member of FOUR JACKS AND A JILL?
Ray GARNETT
Charted August 1962 with "I can't stop loving you" on TEAL. TS 1. This was a cover version of the overseas hit by Ray Charles. Was this artist from RSA?
GRIT
Charted March 1974 with "CHARLIE" on GALLO. PD 9954. This was a version of the song "CHARLY", with which Sean Rennie had a hit (not the RABBITT song). The original version was a song from Spain.
HEAVYWEIGHT
Charted Feb. 1975 with "Muhammad Ali" on GALLO. PD 1062. A cover version of the UK hit by Johnny Wakelin which was entitled "Black Superman".
Jackie LESLIE & THE EM-VEES
Charted March 1976 with "Rhinestone Cowboy" (cover of the Glen Campbell song) on MvN. MVS 473.
J C LIVINGSTON
Charted July 1976 with "Did you boogie (with your baby)?" (cover version of a hit from Canada) on TEAL (PLUM). PLS 562. Other artists with hits on the PLUM label at around the same time were Barbara RAY, Jody WAYNE and Gwynneth ASHLEY-ROBIN.
ME & THEM
Charted Feb. 1970 with "Two little boys" (cover of the hit by Rolf Harris, based on a tune composed in 1903) on PANORAMA. PS 1010. (The Afrikaans artist Cora Marie had her 1980s hits released on the same label).
Joe STANTON
Charted May 1972 with "Lend me a dollar (the call)" on TALENTCOR. TC 105. No other hits charted on that label. Possibly Joe was related to Don STANTON who had a hit single "Je t'aime je t'aime" on the CBS label and a hit in RSA in 1975?
STROBE
Charted July 1977 with "Gimme dat banana" (cover version of a hit from Europe by the PIPKINS) on David Gresham's NITTY GRITTY label. Was this a session act confined to the studio? Perhaps "Gruesome Gresh" (alias Gries Heimer {remember 'Bonely Bonela' from 1972? - ed}) can comment?
SUGAR SWEET
Charted on the BULLET label in 1978 with cover versions of hits by HOT CHOCOLATE and TARNEY SPENCER BAND.
Jerry WALSH
Charted August 1977 with "Southern Nights" (cover version of Glen Campbell's hit) on the BULLET label.
Robin YOUNG
Charted Nov. 1979 with "We don't talk anymore" (cover version of the Cliff Richard song) on GALLO. PD 1772.
If anyone has further info on any of these acts, I would appreciate them e-mailing me. Grateful thanks.

6.ROCK ON - LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO
--------------------------------------
PRETORIA BASH AT COOL RUNNINGS
Tassenberg Varsity Rock Toer, 31 August
Pretoria celebrated SA Music Week in grand style on Friday night 31st
August at Cool Runnings in Wonderboom, with one of the best line-ups in SA rock music. Ironically the "Pretoria Bash" was organised and hosted by a Capetonian, none other than "Dagga" Dirk Uys. Well done and thank you Dirk "jou Ou Doring"!! A special thanks also to Tassenberg for their sponsorship of the event ... "Dankie Tassies!"
Between 800 and 900 religious rock fans and supporters packed the venue to show our appreciation of local talent, and of course we were not disappointed. Friday night proved one thing for sure and that is that SA rock music is alive and well and is right up there with the best in rock anywhere on the planet right now.
The bash kicked off with Karen Zoid and man oh man, does this lady pack one helluva lot of energy! Right from the word go, Karen rocked us right out of our socks with her powerful voice and scathing backing on drums, solid bass and lead guitar. She certainly kicked the night off on the right note..... If Karen Zoid is in your part of town, don't dare and miss them!!
This was followed by Beeskraal. "Kyk, hierdie boere is vir niks bang
nie!!" These guys pump good solid rock-and-roll ala "Blou Bul style!"
Great performance guys, plenty of woema.
Next up was Jack Hammer. Well what do we say, just like fine old Port, "The Hammer" (Piet Botha) simply seems to 'mature' and get better with age. We're certainly looking forward to hearing your new material Piet.
Valiant was "Die Missing Boer", however Albert Frost threw together a blues trio (Jorrie from Not My Dog on drums and Johan Meiring on bass), borrowed Piet Botha's guitar and proceeded to blow everyone away with a healthy dose of the blues.
Unfortunately we had to leave before Not My Dog's set, but we believe it really rocked. By all accounts a great night was had by all, especially the Digest's Brian Currin who's boots I had to douse with a fire extinguisher a few times!

DIRTY AULD DORP
Robin Auld & Dorp at the Halfmoon in Putney, 6th September
There was an interesting mix of SA music down at the Halfmoon in Putney on Thursday night. Robin Auld, a stalwart of the SA rock scene opened for relatively new comers Dorp. This made for a good natured, easy rocking, drum and bassing, eclectic, bouncing, moshing, sampling, bra throwing (yes, Dorp are suffering from Tom Jones syndrome) kind of an evening.
It began quite sensibly with Robin opening up to an empty venue with a great acoustic tune. This signalled to the audience to leave the main bar area and move into the back room. The full sound that Robin created with just the acoustic guitar was quite wonderful. He quickly moved on to include his group (a drummer and bassist) and moved into that familiar easy going rock sound that we have come to expect from him. However I found this live sound better than his studio work with a harder edge and more body to it. For a couple of songs, an old friend of his who had wandered into the audience, joined the band on stage and added a great bluesy harmonica which added an extra dimension to an already polished set. One can tell that Robin is an old master at the game. His easygoing nature showed through and he was the master of his guitar. An all too short set that was professionally executed.
The last time I saw Dorp, they were supporting Boo! With a UK record deal practically in the bag for them, they have moved up in the world and we could possibly see a change of name from Dorp to Stad as they have grown and matured. Pieter Bezuidenhout still has that mad glint in his eyes and is a sight to behold as he contorts his body and face in a manic dance to the spiky, angular sound emanating from around him. As the drum 'n bass and catchy sample sounds blare out, he bounces and jumps, grabbing the mike to sing the lyrics which seem to be mere samples themselves and are either really profound or utter nonsense, but usually quite funny ("I'll take my mom to the prom, cause she's a better twister than my sister").
Kevin Kieswetter adds a funky, sometimes reggae groove on his guitar while Fred handles the turntables. Not all the tunes are to my taste, some being too harsh sounding, but these are in the minority and so am I as the audience love them all.
As some lingerie lands on the stage and Fred and Pieter have a mock fight in the audience, I reflect on an enjoyable night out at what is becoming one of the favoured venues for SA Artists. The Halfmoon that was shining down as I walked back across the Thames was nothing compared with the shining that went on in the Halfmoon in Lower Richmond Street Putney.

EMINENT CHILD
http://www.eminent-child.com/
The optional flash introduction to the site consists of a photo of the band slowly coming into focus with the bands name and "Enjoy your stay" popping up as text. You are then moved swiftly onto the bands home page. Geri Halliwell recently revived the old Weather Girls' classic 'It's Raining Men', but what she omits to mention is that these are smiley face men. Obviously she hasn't visited the Eminent's home page, for these little yellow faced smilers float gently down the screen while you decide where to go on the site. How rock 'n roll is that!
There are quite a few options on this well put-together and informative site which over and above the standard options, allows fans to submit pictures, has some real-streaming videos (as opposed to fake ones?), a screensaver, a guestbook, chat room and for those of you whose geography is a bit rusty, a map of Africa. I did have problems accessing the guestbook, but recommend a visit to the Map, and particularly the South African part of the map. Why, you may ask, do I want to see a map of South Africa? Well, the answer is that when you hit the back button from this screen and the Map of Africa screen there are some unusual sounds that I can only guess are those of an elephant and/or a whale. Okay maybe it's not the most intriguing thing you will find on the Internet, but I had a laugh at these sounds.
Lots to see and do here. It's worth a visit.
