SEMISANE GET BIG BROTHER
BMG Africas Cape Town pop rockers Semisane just got a big, big break. The young quartet was selected to record the official theme song for the massive Big Brother reality TV show, which began airing on M-Net this weekend. The slamming track is called 'Life', and Sascha, Chris, Nic and Tikara recently spent a day in the Big Brother house in Johannesburg, where they wrapped shooting of a music video for the song.
'Life' has already been receiving exclusive airplay on (Big Brother co-host) Mark Pilgrim's 5FM weekend shows, and will shortly be playlisted on the national pop station. The daily Big Brother show is expected to be the biggest thing to hit South African television, ever. Thats if its success in other countries is anything to go by. 12 final contestants were chosen from thousands of entrants, and will compete for the main prize of R1 Million. So be sure not to miss all the excitement, and watch out for Semisane's 'Life' single and the first Big Brother compilation album out soon on BMG.

SAFM SONG HITS THE #1 SPOT... WORLDWIDE!
Lionel Bastos, whose latest album, Rising Above the Madness, was recorded and released by SAfm earlier this year, has achieved international online success. The album's first single She Can't Let it Go recently rocketed to the top of the Adult Contemporary chart of MP3.com, holding the number one slot for two consecutive days. The site is the Internet's oldest and most established music distribution vehicle.
The chart is updated daily, and is based on the music listened to by millions of visitors to the site each day. There are currently in excess of a million songs available to choose from, of which around 1700 feature in the Adult Contemporary category. Over 150 000 artists are featured on the site - ranging from one-man garage bands in Japan, through to industry big guns. Bastos held the top position for two consecutive days, before being ousted by Swedish group Roxette.
MP3.com has a business model that is widely believed to be the most democratic online. Artists upload their music; visitors to the site select what they want to listen to. Their selections determine which songs do well, and which ones don't. Artists then, in turn, receive payment for the number of times their music is listened to.
"As the world's entertainment moguls are frantically searching for models that that can earn them some cash, sites like MP3.com have quietly been going about their business and putting money directly into the pockets of the artists", remarked SAfm Marketing Manager Tony Lankester. "It's great that Lionel has done so well on the site - it shows that South African artists can easily hold their own when the playing fields are levelled".
Lionel Bastoss homepage on MP3.com can be viewed at: http://www.mp3.com/lionelb
'She Can't Let It Go' is dedicated to the victims of rape. It is being offered royalty-free to any woman's organisation worldwide that wishes to use it for promotional, fundraising, awareness or advertising campaigns. Email mailto:lionelbastos@hotmail.com for more info.

THE STORY OF SOLOMON LINDA
"Who is Solomon Linda?" I hear you ask. Only the guy who wrote one of the most well-known songs in the known universe, that's who. He died without a cent to his name in 1962 aged 53. Solomon wrote 'Mbube' in 1939 and recorded it the same year with the Original Evening Birds.
"I've never heard of 'Mbube'," I hear you cry. No? Maybe you know it better as 'Wimoweh' or 'In The Jungle' or even as 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight'.
A proper CD compilation of all the recordings of this track would probably be a box set and would definitely include some of the following artists:
The Weavers (Pete Seeger's group), The Tokens (US #1 in 1961), Karl Denver (UK #4 in 1962), Bert Kaempfert (on his 'Swinging Safari' album released in 1966), Tight Fit (featuring Richard Jon Smith, UK #1 in 1982), Lebo M, Hotline, (with PJ Powers), Roger Whittaker, Timon & Pumbaa (from Walt Disney's "Lion King"), Helmut Lotti and Akkedis (in Afrikaans).
A 6-track CD 'The Story Of Solomon Linda' has recently been released by Gallo Record Company and includes the original 1939 version (I doubt this has ever been released on CD before) as well as Robert John's 1971 US #3 hit version which sold over a million copies. This CD, available from Musica for only R29.95, also includes versions by Mango Groove, Mahotella Queens, Ladysmith Black Mamabazo with Gcina Mhlophe and The Elite Swingsters.
All profits from the sales of this CD will go to his estate. So buy this CD and become part of the Solomon Linda story.

SPOTLIGHT ON MAX NORMAL
Max Normal, the exciting new four-piece hip-trip-hoppish band from Johannesburg, have been described as "An audio-visual unit designed to enhance the vibrational frequencies of its listener or viewer". The band is: Mark Buchanan (electric bass, electric guitar), Sean Ou Tim (drums, keyboards, sampler), Simon Ringrose (turntables, backing vocals), Watkin "Waddy" Tudor Jones (vocals). Mark and Sean are certainly no strangers to the music industry, each being involved with numerous experimental, and many successful South African bands over the years.
Waddys talents flow in an intoxicating stream of consciousness, covering genres from beautiful melodic notes to hard-core hip-hop and rap. His character captivates his audience, mesmerizing, hypnotizing and seducing the crowd into an incredible crescendo. Simon AKA "Sibot", is the youngest member of the band, and truly is a classic DJ, in every sense of the word. This "Sultan of Scratch", turns the tables like no other, spinning through each sensational set with a rare sense of presence and style.
Max Normal fuses various elements ranging from hip-hop and jazz, through to "electronica", into a highly spontaneous theatrical performance that dazzles the mind. Their music is electrifying. Behind every successful band is a management team. In the case of Max Normal this team is headed by Alan Freeman, the man who turned 206 Louis Botha Avenue into one of the most successful clubs in SA history. The "206live" chilli brand is arguably, the most recognizable club brand in SA.
At the end of 2000, Waddy released his debut solo album entitled Memoirs Of A Clone (Chameleon Records). The album featured the band on some of the tracks, and it was decided that a second album should be released, this time using the entire band. The new album, Songs From The Mall, was released on the 23 July 2001. Both albums were produced, recorded, and engineered, by Adrian Levi, the head of Chameleon Studios.
Following their acclaimed appearance at OppiKoppi, Max Normal have embarked on a two month, whirlwind European tour, where they will be playing at the world-renowned Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium alongside Krushed n Sorted. In November, they will be heading off to New York City to seek opportunities there.

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------
SHILOH'S CORNER
JACKSON C FRANK
A well-dressed musician in a three-piece pin stripe suit and a bowler hat would slice into the folk clubs of the mid sixties in London.
Jackson's roots came from the coffee houses of New York City when he jammed with John Kay, who later found fame and fortune as the lead singer in the group Steppenwolf. Although strongly influenced by Muddy Waters and Sonny Terry, his perception of folk music got blown away when he first saw Bob Dylan performing in a folk club in New York. Yet his own confidence made claim to the fact that he could do anything Dylan could do, and even better the vocal ability. Jackson's strength was his ability to compose ballads and protest songs. In the early days he met Elvis Presley while travelling South to collect folk material for an album based on the civil war. In the winter of 1965 he made his way across the Atlantic to the UK and while aboard a luxury liner wrote a fascinating ballad called "Blues run the game". He shared a London flat with Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel to the point that Paul Simon produced his first album. A young admirer called Al Stewart made his recording debut with a track called "Yellow Walls" written by Jackson C. Frank.
"Blues run the game" became a popular folk standard on the circuit, performed regularly by Bert Jansch and Jackson's girlfriend at the time, the wonderful Sandy Denny. John Peel of the BBC invited Jackson to do a live radio broadcast due to the popular demand of his songs. Then tragedy came, with bouts of depression, writer's block and the steady depletion of his bank account due to a diet of expensive guitars, hotel rooms and vehicles. Jackson left the UK and fled for Woodstock in 1969 and married a former fashion model. The downward spiral pathway gained momentum as his marriage broke up and his infant son died of cystic fibrosis. From this point onwards Jackson became addicted to the anti-depressant drugs he was prescribed, and gained weight due to a thyroid problem. He checked himself into a mental institution and later escaped and for twenty years lived on the streets of New York as a homeless man. All contact with friends and family were lost, and at one particular stage, a gang of street youths shot him while he was sitting on the porch of a mental asylum. The bullet became permanently lodged in his left eye and he lost his sight.
Thanks to a wonderful man called Jim Abbott, an American folk music fan, Jackson was tracked down to a night shelter. They found him ravaged by arthritis to the point of having to use a cane to get around. Abbott nursed him back to health and this tragic story ends with Jackson fully recovered in 1996 and constantly writing new material.
On the original Sandy Denny album, two outstanding tracks "Milk and Honey" and "You never wanted me" are featured by songwriter Jackson C. Frank. Today Jackson claims "Everyone gets a second chance, don't mess up the second time." His tracks have been featured by Tim Buckley and the most diverse of folk singers. He remains an icon of salvation for those that believe that there is no escape from the blues. He only released one album, the "Blues run the game", published by Moon Crest Records.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
THREE BIG SOUTH AFRICAN CDs:
'African Day' by Hawk (1971, re-issued 2001)
'Physiognomy of the Soul' by Bernard Binns (1999)
'Polynation' by The Electric Petals (1995)
I frequently return to some special SA artists by whom I have but one
work. These are three albums out of many that linger in the memory
musically and lyrically, and stand the test of repeated playing.
Hawk -- 'African Day' -- This is a sophisticated rock album, though don't think I'm getting pretentious and suggesting I'm sophisticated just because I listen to it with pleasure. Also, I don't think the term "progressive" does this album justice, as it surpasses the form. In 'African Day' are musical colors, a musical journey, a message of brotherly love, along with real rock passages.
The title track flows along through movements and rhythms for over 17
minutes. A wild and rewarding musical trip of drama, drums, and
polyrhythms.
Songs like 'Look Up Brother', 'Kissed By the Sun' and 'Here Comes the Sun' soar dynamically -- if this be Afro-pop, then it is a seamless melding. Despite some musically dark moments on 'African Day', the overall mood of the album is of joy, which makes it music for all people, not just those of a certain... mature bearing.
Bernard Binns -- 'Physiognomy of the Soul' -- An entirely world-class album by an intelligent and creative man who knows his music and the studio. Even his pop songs rise above pophood.
There is a range of song here: love ballad, pop, rock, and a few sub-genres in between. Yet loud, fast, soft, or hard, 'Physiognomy' flows and holds together. The man loves the music.
I'll bet Bernard is a perfectionist who not only crafts songs
conscientiously, but agonizes over the song sequence as well. I got so used to the song order being appropriate that playing this on shuffle mode is odd.
From '80s The Helicopters maestro to 'Physiognomy of the Soul' impresario, Binns holds my interest. The first few times I listened to my compilations containing Helicopters' songs, whenever one came on I reached for the CD case to see who was playing.
A new release in the future, Bernard? A 'Best of The Helicopters', maybe?
The Electric Petals -- 'Polynation' -- There's greatness here, without using the word lightly, greatness in a burst of creativity. These musos know where they come from musically (both South Africa and the world), and make fun musical allusions to The Beatles, Dylan, The Stones, Hawk, Freedom's Children, Abstract Truth, and the ubiquitous et cetera. The wonderfully rockin' numbers are fun, too.
Replete with lyrics that make astute comments ('Maid In Africa', for one example), 'Polynation' is for both rocking and for thinking. It's rock, though -- don't get the idea that it's ponderous.
In South Africa, 'Polynation' belongs alongside 'The Best of SA Pop Volume 2' to tell someone what South African rock music is all about. In the rest of the world, this album belongs on many more CD players. 'Polynation' is meaningful music that is not obvious or preachy -- it's great rock music that can be listened to for the sheer fun of it.
These three are but three out of the many bands I've been taking another listen to lately as I continue to explore South Africa's rich music that, new or old, sounds alive. In fact, I've passed some level of musical consciousness and become aware that South Africa's music scene is more complicated, diverse, dynamic, and broad and deep than I had previously surmised back when I thought it merely complex and rich.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
CLASSIC EPICS - STEVE LINNEGAR'S SNAKESHED
Despite the decidedly Oriental look to the cover, and song titles like 'Tao Ch'ang Wu Wei' this classic epic is neither Tai Chi nor feely more drum stick than chop stick and as removed from saki as it is from sakkie.
Released in 1982, this album harks back to the American rock of the late 70s. It's textured rock that is laid back and perfect for mellowing out to with a few good friends and a bottle of wine. The electric guitar, although rocking is played down and is subtly interwoven with the acoustic strumming creating a silky backdrop for the sweetly subdued, almost whispered vocal harmonies, the effect of which at times is quite startling.
There are deviations from this formula with 'Kamakua Dragons' where the
electric guitar comes more to the fore and features a harsher screech-edged vocals. The hillbilly violin on 'Lamplight Shines' adds another texture to the album. But the centre piece and indeed THE classic epic of the album is 'Desert'. A vast song, spanning over 13 minutes, it builds from a strummed intro, adds an aching landscape of electric guitar and sax and is polished with gently atmospheric and psychedelic vocal performance. There is a hint of 'Hotel California' flowing through this masterpiece.
Ignoring some questionable lyrics ('Ooh I've got a heart/ Don't hit me you tart' from 'Kamakura Dragons'), this is an album of fragile, beautiful rock that has been known to change hands on the internet at a price in excess of US$160! It's not surprising that people are prepared to pay these sums of money for an album that has the word classic written all over it (well at least once in the top left hand corner of the cover).

SPRINGBOK RADIO CHARTS: 30 YEARS AGO
http://www.rock.co.za/charts
Friday, 27 August 1971
This week [last week] Title - Artist
1 [1] Co Co - The Sweet
2 [2] I Did What I Did For Maria - Tony Christie
3 [5] Banner Man - Blue Mink
4 [8] He's Gonna Step On You Again - John Kongos*
5 [9] You - Peter Maffay
6 [3] Rain, Rain, Rain - Gentle People*

8 [6] Lady Rose - Mungo Jerry
9 [14] Me And Bobby McGee - Gordon Lightfoot
10 [7] Funny, Funny - The Sweet
* South African artists
The Sweet retained the top spot for the 9th consecutive week, the 3rd with Co Co. John Kongos continued to climb the charts, jumping 4 places to number 4. The other 2 SA artists in the top 10, Peanut Butter Conspiracy and the Gentle People both lost ground, falling to numbers 7 and 6 respectively.
The first every recording of Kris Kristofferson's 'Me and Bobby McGee'
performed by Canadian Gordon Lightfoot entered the top 10. Ironically,
Lightfoot who's own compositions had been covered by the likes of Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis, made his South African chart debut with someone else's song.
Lower down the charts Groep 2 (the name Gert van Tonder and Sias Reynecke went under) entered the charts with 'Daar's niks soos ware Liefde), while Lincoln's 'Lonely Days and Lonely Nights' ended a 13 week run on the top 20.
South Africans at Number 1 this week:
Clap your Hands and Stamp you Feet - Maria (full name Carmelia Maria Neto Lopez) (1973)
Ramaja - Glenys Lynne (1976)
Paradise Road - Joy (1980)

BLACK PLASTIC:
Current SA Vinyl shops and outlets of note - the first in a series
MA BU VINYL
A comedian on TV recently explained how Hairdressing School works. He said its a two year diploma: the first week is spent learning the basics and essentials of hairdressing - cutting, perming, highlighting, washing etc. The rest of the two years is spent thinking up bad puns for the name of your salon ("Hair Today", "Curl Up And Dye" spring to mind). Thinking up a name for your new vinyl record store in Cape Town in 2001 is an equally difficult situation. Consequently, during the course of finding this new store and writing about it (a period of about 3 weeks), its official name has changed from Ma Bu Vinyl to Supreme Records, to Jack-Amp Records to Mr Boos Records. It is currently (and on good authority, definitely) called Ma Bu Vinyl, so that is the name well use until further notice. (Watch this space, etc)
It is good to see that despite the volumes of music available on CD, DVD and MP3, there is still a huge market for vinyl. In London one can pick up pricey vinyl reprints of classic rock records at most of the larger music emporiums, and second-hand vinyl stores in areas like Soho and Camden Town do a brisk trade as well. The prices at which these albums are changing hands is good enough reason to prune your collection, shop around, and take an annual trip to London with a case full of records.
Here in Cape Town one can still find both imported and locally-pressed second hand albums at Vibes in N1 City, at the three Outlaw branches (City, Claremont and Wynberg), at the Green Point Market on a Sunday, and many other smaller sources and second-hand stores around Long Street. Vinyl Junkies was a small shop in Kalk Bay that offered a reasonable selection of albums (mostly from owner Boogies own collection), but that closed down in 2000 leaving only the odd shabby copy of 4 Jacks And A Jill or Mantovani records available in sidewalk boxes in that area.
But a chance browse through the well-known second-hand shop in Kloof Street (#34, just below the Longkloof Studios and Bardeli's) led to the discovery of a new, neat and well-stocked vinyl shop lurking in its depths. Ma Bu Vinyl has been operating from this backroom for a few months and is poised to move to larger premises right next door. Owner Jacques Vosloo has assembled a worthy selection of reasonably-priced imported and SA-pressed albums and (12" and 45) singles that take a while to browse through.
Jacques buys and sells vinyl and the quality of the records is generally very good. There are always many interesting bargains to be found and there is a steady flow of new titles daily. Some early purchases included Captain Beefhearts Safe As Milk; a reasonable copy of Tim Buckleys final studio album, Look At The Fool, hiding in the under-R10 rack; The Flames For Your Precious Love single in its picture sleeve; Falling Mirrors 'Johnny Calls The Chemist' LP with the printed inner sleeve; the Carolyn Hester LP with a previously-unrecorded Bob Dylan on Harmonica, Rosemary Cloonys Cloony Tunes, and Clouts debut album with those white boxing gloves on the white cover.
Those titles are probably all sold by now, but theres still a steady flow of new titles into Ma Bu Vinyl, and they are always looking to buy new stock provided it is in good condition.
Jacques Vosloo can be contacted at mailto:die_vos@hotmail.com if you are looking for a specific title. You can also phone him at - (021) 423 7635 or 082 534 6006.
This is the first in a possible series on Vinyl Record sources, shops and outlets in SA. All recommendations, suggestions and articles are welcome for inclusion, as are vinyl wish lists (you know youve got one!) (SS)

BAND O'GYPSYS
I'm sure you know of this band - used to be a father and three sons, say 20 years ago. The father died since and the three brothers kept going (one of them is called Lawrence). I saw them playing last at Dockyar, a pub in Centurion (the town that used to be called Verwoerdburgstad) in '99. They also played at OppiKoppi the first time it was staged in the Norhern Province.
They mostly do cover versions of Jimi Hendrix and some Doors and some
Purple. Brought out a CD (now that everybody can) perhaps in 1999.
A group of friends and myself are trying to put them up for a night as
we like their playing (I think their Hendrix covers are superb). Thus
the quest to find one of the members.

OPPIKOPPI TUNED 2001
http://www.oppikoppi.co.za
A festival of this magnitude, featuring as many acclaimed artists and newfound talent as this one, can best be described in terms of highlights. It is physically impossible to be in three places at once - believe me, I tried! At one stage I even had to resort to dividing my hour into three slots of fifteen minutes just to try and catch it all. Even then I still missed out on special moments, like Sky 189 dropping rhymes alongside Max Normal.
In total there were six and a half stages. The half being the Travelling Wheel-bearing Blue Carpet Stage, which in essence, was a blue mat which transformed into a magic carpet of sorts, travelling all over Fountains Valley, as dancers, actors and contortionists performed on it. The Mainstay Mainstage was, of course, the largest stage. What an incredible stage! At night, with lights fully lit, it resembled a spaceship from another world. Stand too far back and the artists on it seemed to disappear, as if beamed into outer space. The half-oval shaped stage hovered over the festival grounds as a reminder of the standard to which South African music aspires, a standard we are not very far from at all. Watching Brasse Vannie Kaap, Max Normal and Bongo Maffin showed the incredibly high calibre of stage performers South Africa has.
Although not as big, the Tassenburg Old Brown Sherry Rock/ Hop stage still held its weight in musical gems. A smaller version, complete with fantastic sound and light system, this stage hosted acts like Firing Squad, Karen Zoid and, all the way from Malmesbury, Ghost.
Treasures to be found on the Bernini Dry Jazz and Folk Stage were priceless: Carlo Mombelli, Blackmilk, Aavaaz, Kaolin, to name but a few.
The STA Travel Unplugged Stage was the place to relax on the grass, sparse as it was, and appreciate the quiet music, void of loud guitars and heavy drums. The huge response drawn from stalwarts like Koos Kombuis and Valiant Swart, and newcomers like Simba Morri and Roots 2000, bore testament that a man and his guitar are a powerful thing.
The Gordon's Gin Comedy and Theatre Stage was one of the most popular. This stage, housed in a marquee, showcased some of the Cape's finest comedian exports as well as theatre productions. This stage, in its second year, is a great addition to the festival as it brings all aspects of the arts to Oppikoppi.
The Musica Progessive Dance Stage was phenomenal. Beats of all sizes were to be found within this marquee. SAs own Blunted Stuntman and Bob and international DJs Gavin Hardkiss and Luke Vibert all dropped killer sets.
