SA MUSIC WEEK 2001
(25 August to 2 September)
The sounds of South African music are set to flow through the country when South Africa’s second National Music Week takes place over two weekends from August 25 to September 1. Now in its second year (after the introductory South African Music Day in 1999) SAMW is already recognized as one of the more important tools in the promotion and strengthening of South African music, its artists and its stature, not only in South Africa, but internationally as well.
The organizers - a partnership between Music Industry Development Initiative (MIDI Trust) the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology (DACST) - together with the National Arts Council (NAC) and sponsors SAMRO, RISA, Fishwick Printers and Sonnenburg, Murphy Leo Burnett (who created the campaign pro bona), plan on creating a week of musical celebration that reaches a wider audience in an even more exciting manner than last year.
"Music plays an important part in South African industry and business and hence influences South Africa’s economy. Tens of thousands of people are employed annually in South Africa’s music industry," says MIDI Trust’s Rosie Katz. "So not only is its growth desired by all music-loving people in the country, but it is also vital in its support of those who make a living from South African music - from musicians, producers, management, technicians, stage hands to DJs."
South African music will dominate South African culture for the entire week as live music venues, retail outlets, radio, TV, print, conference rooms, studios, schools and community centres are bombarded by the sounds of not just South African songs, but South Africa’s heritage. The South African public will be made aware of both South Africa’s deep-rooted musical past and its exciting, dynamic future.
To do this SAMW will be filled with activities from live shows and live performances at your favourite music shop to education and training programmes, while marketing South African music to all media. One of the major successes of SAMW last year was The Studio Recording Project, which will be hosted again this year. This project is an initiative aimed at emerging musicians and songwriters who require assistance with laying original demo tracks in professional recording studios for the first time.
Twenty-four studios donated studio time for the project in 1999; 30 studios with 33 bands being recorded in 2000. Demo compilation CDs were then made from these recordings in 1999 and in 2000 and were distributed to record companies, radio stations, promoters, participating studios, the artists and any other party that could help promote these musicians.

OMJE2001 - CLOSING DATE FOR ENTRIES EXTENDED
The closing date for entries to the Old Mutual Jazz Encounters 2001 competition has been extended to August 17th to accommodate requests for late submissions. The categories in this year’s Talent Search are Vocal Afro-Jazz, Vocal Jazz, Jazz Group/Soloist, Afro-Jazz Group/Soloist and Jazz Composition.
Each of the Regional winners will receive a cash prize and a place in the National Finals. The National winners in the National Finals will each receive a R20 000 prize. The panel of National adjudicators for the 2001 event is Don Albert, Sipho Gumede, Dizu Plaatjies, Don Laka and Mpho Mohape.
Who is eligible to enter: The competition is open to all citizens and permanent residents of South Africa (and non-residents with valid study permits); any musician or group who has not signed any recording deals to date, and who has not released any official albums or singles.

FUDGE GOES TO THE MOVIES
Die musiekgroep Fudge stel op Saterdag 18 Augustus 2001 hul eerste
musiekvideo vir die snit 'Selfdefy' (wat op hul nuutste CD verskyn) in

Into the SA rock playground stride the boys of Zen Arcade. They’ve heard all those "Rock is Dead" whispers but know better. They also know that there’s still nothing to beat a good, old fashioned guitar, bass, drums and stirring vocals four-piece rock band. So the name on their T-shirts gives a respectful nod to their favourite Hüsker Dü masterpiece, and the seven songs on their mighty but measured (and quite short) first album, jokingly titled ‘Snowflake’, pay similar allegiance to a broad sweep of rock influences. Yet ‘Snowflake’ has a now-ness and newness about it that is refreshing and cause for much optimism.
Each of these seven hard rock "ballads" have their own special charm, even though some of them wade well over the six minute mark. Opener ‘Ode’ hints at things to come with its restrained edgy backing before ‘Sister’ established the band’s current rock credentials with its big and brash nu-metal swagger. Then it’s back to the soaring, soulful and touchingly vulnerable vocals of the addictively melodic first single, ‘Crazy Over You’, which stood tall among the many other worthy contributions on the ‘Showcase 3: Unearthed’ new SA Class of ’01 rock mixture.
Up next is the album’s clear highlight, ‘Not About You’, which finds singer Iain McKenzie letting his vocals swoop in and out of the band’s almost funky rock groove, creating a thundering Zep-like stomp.
‘Step Back’, ‘Up’ and closer ‘Take Out The Trash’, continue to raise the tempo instead of letting us down lightly. But it’s all very controlled and well-paced, leaving the songs to expose their strengths and sustain our interest all the way through. Credit here to producer Neil Snyman for finding a way to simultaneously harness and unleash the band’s energy and sound. ‘Snowflake’ has nothing in its sounds or styles that is startlingly new or innovative, but its solid, wired and deceptively tuneful contents indicate plenty of potential and promise. ROCKETS BLAST OFF
'Bridge', the new Rockets CD is their biggest & brightest project to date. Leading the way on this CD is the Rockets own R.E.D.-produced 'Gimme A Break! - turning their former dance hit into a House-stormer. Following the 'sunshine-reggae' treatment of their recent 'This Is My Song' (also included), the Rockets have applied the same treatment to the legendary 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' - spine-chilling.... also featuring Alistair Izobell on guest vocals.
Completing the 4 new tracks being issued to radio across-the-country
(and already on RSG) is the bonus Afrikaans track, 'Papa Papa' - with
superb lyrics by Richard van der Westhuizen (of 'Tussen Treine' fame),

versions of 'House Of The Rising Sun' and the Rockets salute to the South African anthem, 'Weeping'.
For Liverpool soccer fans, the Rockets have included their own
'sunshine-reggae' version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone'. A stunning version of 'Smile' (VW TV-ad) is also included (by the same writer as 'This Is My Song' ... Charlie Chaplin!).
By specific request from KwaZulu Natal, the Rockets have included a

RHYTHM RECORDS OPEN A NEW ‘BRANCH’
New Cape Town reggae group, The Branch, who have recently been carving out a respectful reputation around the Peninsula, recently launched their debut album, ‘Kuyatsha’, at the Drum Café. The 10-song African reggae-pop collection, featuring highlights like ‘Khululuma’, ‘Write Your Name’, and ‘Sanna’, has just been released by Albert du Plessis’ Rhythm Records label.
The Branch is essentially Judah (lead vocals), Lennox Olivier (percussion, keyboards, backing vocals), Daniel ‘Dials’ Gouws (lead guitar) and Ben Amato (sax, flute, guitar, bass, keyboard and pennywhistle). Amato, who produced the album, is also a card-carrying member of one of Cape Town’s most enduring musical outfits, Colorfields. Both these bands collaborate and perform as part of the ‘Alkhebula’ project. So you’ll also find Colorfields members Ash Read (drums), Eric Michot (bass) and Kerstin Olivier (vocals) helping out on a few tracks. All one big, happy, musical family.
‘Kuyatsha’ joins an impressive bunch of albums by signing to Rhythm Records. After only a short stretch in the (Cape) music market, this label is already gaining a credible reputation for the diverse, innovative and quality albums so far appearing on their catalogue. There’s Venessa Nolan’s ‘Burn’, Breyten Breytenbach’s collaborative ‘Mondmusiek’ album, and the ‘Tassenberg All Stars’ and ‘High On Blues’ live collections.
Another new Rhythm Records release is ‘Dorpe, Stede & Streke’, which is a collection of songs about towns, cities and regions of South Africa by a range of SA artists. There are not many CDs where you can find David Kramer and Anton Goosen next to Randall Wicomb and Lukas Maree on the same disc or listen to the West Coast sounds of the late Worsie Visser rubbing shoulders with the urban blues of Valiant Swart. BEDROCK BLAST OUT OF ORANJEMUND
Oranjemund, according to all who live, work or visit there, is Namibia’s best kept secret. It’s a smallish mining town under the collective patronage of NamDeb (Namibia De Beers) and most who live there are involved with the mine is some way or another. It’s not known as a big rock music town, but recently some of its more mature citizens have been making a huge racket and inspiring the younger rockers to do the same. Bedrock is a four-piece band comprising Pete Shout, Kenny Ramage, Mike Millad, and Eddie. They play the occasional live gig and recently found the time to fashion their debut rock album, ‘Recovery’.
Seeing as Oranjemund does not have a full, state-of-the-art recording studio, ‘Recovery’ was produced in slightly lower-key surroundings (see the sleeve for clues). It tips its hard-hat most prominently to the rock sounds of the ‘70s and celebrates rock’s history, and its effects on the band-members, in the album’s opening track, ‘Rock And Roll Man’. Here all those seminal rock heroes get name-checked and honoured in a sort of ‘Namibian Pie’ way.
But the rest of the album is a mixture of original rock songs performed by a group of older rockers who clearly realize and accept that an NME correspondent is unlikely to pitch up in the near future, but don’t care at all. Sometimes the joy is purely in the writing, recording and releasing of music from the heart, and of course, getting to play it with your (band) mates. Doesn’t matter where you are, or how old you are. (SS)

THE GOODE NEWS
It was his stand-out ‘Coffee’ track on the second ‘Future Sound Of Cape Town’ collection that first brought young Roger Goode to the attention of the SA dance-pop devotees. Since then he’s had two number one hits on 5FM - ‘In The Beginning’ and ‘To Move You’ - and both are included on his just-released debut album, ‘Coming Up For Air’. This light and bright house-pop album is on the Sheer Dance label, thanks to the efforts of MD Mark Conner who signed this exciting 20-year old DJ and producer.
Purple Eye, a leading Dutch dance label, heard ‘In The Beginning’ and arranged a remixing by Ferry Corsten. This will result in a vinyl release and copies will be sent to the likes of Judge Jules, Pete Tong, Graeme Gold, and Sonique in the weeks to come. Purple Eye is also positioning the single to be a contender at the Ibiza Summer session and will be blowing it up for the summer period.

PAUL REVERE AND THE RAIDERS
Formed in Oregon USA in 1961 and originally known as the Downbeats, Paul Revere included Mark Lindsay and reinstated the line-up as Paul Revere and the Nightriders. Due to guitarist Johnny Winter having a back-up group with the same name, they settled on Paul Revere and the Raiders to avoid royalty conflict. Their first single "Louie Louie" was pipped by local rivals the Kingsmen who secured a national hit. Thanks to Dick Clark and his television show "Where the action is" the Raiders launched into a series of excellent singles such as "Louis go home" (something for the Kingsmen), "Kicks" and "Stepping out". The Raiders would wear revolutionary costumes with thigh boots and frilled shirts and three cornered hats. Their producer Terry Melcher was largely responsible for the classic 1965 release "Kicks". Son of Doris Day, Terry would expound the song writing ability of Mann and Weill utilising the Raiders energy. (Of interest, it was during this time that Terry refused to sign up Charles Manson which resulted in a revenge attack on his residence with the death of Sharon Tate and other celebrities).
Although Paul Revere and the Raiders were a real group, their first big hit "Just like me" aired a defiant message to the public that they were not some virtual surf ensemble. Their high television profile as hosts of a show called "Happening '68" gave them nationwide popularity. Another US chart topper that reached the top twenty was the John D Loudermilk "Indian reservation" which had previously been a UK hit for Don Fardon. Classic albums like "Midnight Ride" or the "Alias Pink Puzz" album with the outstanding single "Let me" remain untouchable in the changing sixties. This single could well have pioneered the false ending gimmick that captured the commercial singles of the sixties.
In 1969 the gifted Mark Lindsay embarked on a solo career with the classic "Arizona" which sold over a million copies. In 1983 The Raiders re-united for a re-mix of the old classic favourites under their new Raiders America label. Revere still fronts a portion of the group for the nostalgia circuit, and occasionally pops up at various US Bicentennial celebrations. The power energy of Paul Revere and the Raiders with Freddy Weller on guitar, Charley Coe on bass, Paul on the organ and occasionally Mark Lindsay (vocals), created some of the finest middle-of-the-road energy during the flower-power boom. A worthy observation is the fact that their "Greatest Hits" compilation outsells most of the other collections from this period.

Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music

I missed Binary at Oppikoppi this weekend because I was in Texas, not in South Africa. But Binary played at the festival, and, if this album truly reflects the band, I'm sure they pleased the crowd immensely. Did y'all have your Oppikoppi survival kits?
Binary is another SA group that puts out a fine first CD and gives me the urge to see them live. There's just something about SA bands that makes me want to go to a club or festival and enjoy their performance, then listen to the CD at home afterwards.
When I first played this CD, my initial thought was, "Holy son of fuzz
guitar!" because Binary's guitars have rich distortion mingled with electric guitar fills. Real nice sounding.
The drums are active and obvious, and the bass creatively makes perfect
time. Instrumentally, 'Xero' is rock in which all the instruments are
well-separated and can be appreciated individually or working together
through the songs.
The singer has an earnest, easygoing voice, one that is emotionally
expressive in the rock mode. His distinctive husky singing works well at either creating a personal-sounding song or belting a song out. And he sings in harmony with the guitars, or they accompany him perfectly. For one example of this, give the track 'Cannonballs' a listen.
The lyrics on 'Xero' are intelligent and mature, also, sensitive to details. The songs are in the fine rock tradition of songs about inter-personal relationships, love, or the emotions that accompany relationships.
Somehow, while maintaining a big rock sound, Binary manage to convey
personal and intimate lyrics, as on their single release 'Barefoot Girl', for example. But the album changes according to the volume one plays it. Low, it is a warm and pleasant rock album, Laconic Rock, if you will. Loud, say at 11, it fun-blasts a party or a barbecue. There is something addictive about this big guitar rock sound.
Oxymoronically, 'Xero' is a romping mid-tempo throughout. That is, until the surprise finish of the long dance track version of 'Barefoot Girl'. Before that point, however, there is a nice flow to this music that definitely doesn't let the listener forget this is rock.
This CD reminds me of Wonderboom's first -- though the two bands sound
nothing alike -- in that this is a fun first CD, one indicative of great things to come. I look forward to Binary's second release, or rather, future work from Binary, as they have released songs and an EP before. This is their first album-length release.
The band's website worked fine for me (http://www.binaryonline.co.za). While there, I took advantage of their generosity to download the five songs offered. These songs complement the album and represent Binary's sound well.
To judge by their constant playing schedule, Binary is a hard-working band, with the chops to back up their ambition. I hope they succeed, but stay hungry and ambitious at the same time. If musos like these guys are the future of rock, sign me up for the future, coach. And for Oppikoppi.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
BEST KEPT SECRETS - DOG DETACHMENT
I recently saw a play in London called 'Lloyd Cole Knew My Father'. It
featured 3 ex-NME writers reminiscing about their days at the paper. One of them, David Quantick tells of how, before becoming a journalist he wrote a letter to the NME and ended with the sentence 'Bob Seger is not enough!!'
Before I became a regular contributor to the Digest a "letter" of mine was published that began 'Has the record company executive who has omitted to release the entire Dog Detachment back catalogue on CD been imprisoned yet for his crime against humanity?'
I'm not quite sure who's comments are more embarrassing and neither am I sure whether David Quantick got more than Bob Seger, but today I got my wish as 'Best Kept Secrets', the Dog Detachment retrospective from Retro Fresh, landed in my postbox.
The CD contains 16 tracks and 8 MP3s drawn from all 3 of the group's albums, and 3 non-album tracks ('Young Days', 'Third World War', and 'Machines') from singles released by the band. You can access the MP3s, as well as some lyrics and pictures through webpages that are on the disc. These correspond with the online pages at http://www.dogdetachment.co.za.
For fans, this is a must have. Available on CD for the first time and
digitally remastered, it's great to hear the tunes again, but crisp, clean and free of the snap, crackle and pop that dogged (no pun intended) vinyl releases. Full marks to Benjy Mudie and Retro Fresh for the work done in restoring these tracks.
The tracks are not chronological which means you can swing from the angry, angst-filled punk of tracks from 'The Last Laugh' to the darker, more brooding songs from 'Fathoms of Fire' to the more world wise and prophetic offerings from 'Barriers' then back to the spiky punk of the single 'Third World War'. Despite this, you are always treated to hard rocking, hard hitting but, and this is the bit that set them apart from the others, always melodic tunes.
Those of you that missed out on the Dogs the first time around, here's your chance to see what the fuss was all about and experience first hand one of the the greatest SA bands, probably of all time, certainly of the 80s. For ardent fans, it's a chance to at last replace worn out records and tapes.
It's easy to listen to this with a dog (especially if you've got one as a pet), but I challenge you to listen to this with a sense of detachment. This, like their 3 albums, draws you into the dark, apocalyptic, punk rocking world of Stormtrooper Pop that was Dog Detachment.

Mungo Jerry returned to the top 10, after their follow up to the number 1 hit 'In the Summertime', 'Baby Jump' had stalled at 18 in March of 1971.

ALL THE WAY FROM AMERICA
Greetings all
Before I launch into the latest good news update, a quick reminder: I am a South African, working (unpaid) on public radio stations KRVM and KWVA in Eugene, Oregon. On KRVM I present a show called Women In Music, in which I try to include as many South African ladies as possible, and KWVA is a news show called Africa Digest, which covers news (and a little music) from all over Africa.
KLCC is the largest public broadcaster in Oregon, and is the only radio
station to broadcast live from events like the Oregon Country Fair.
(Speaking of which, the biggest draw this year was Zimbabwe’s Thomas
Mapfumo, who drew the largest audience ever to Main Stage, and was certainly the biggest "name" they’ve had at the Fair in many a year. Thomas now lives in Eugene and we’re lucky to have him play at many of the local events. His mbira band also plays a lot of local gigs when they’re not with him.)
Whilst KRVM, with whom I’ve been involved since November 1998 doing the
Women In Music show, is extremely popular, KLCC reaches a far greater
audience, and carries news programmes as well as music. It has extremely high quality programming and is a highly desired spot on the radio network! (Listen to some of the shows on http://www.klcc.org)
I spent a week or so compiling CDs containing samples of songs from discs that record companies as well as individuals have sent me over the last year or two. Each record company had a separate CD compilation. These were passed on to Michael Canning of KLCC in a very fruitful meeting on Tuesday. KLCC already plays a lot of world music, and much of that is South African music, in their daily programming. Whilst they do have "world music"-type shows, the SA music gets more airplay during the 9-3 Monday to Friday shows, called "Fresh Tracks".
Since introducing SA music (and other world music) to my listeners at KRVM, other DJs have started broadening the playlist to include world music - very encouraging! This area has an audience very receptive to music from different parts of the globe, and all African music is extremely well received. Not just the traditional stuff, either, but pop and rock are being played as far as possible. (Meaning, where DJs have access to the music.) All things African are very popular here, with African dance and drumming lessons being taught around the area daily.
Growing an audience is something I have been doing since I started working on radio here (although "working" suggests I have a paid job - public radio work is done on a voluntary, unpaid basis). With KLCC being receptive to playing the music I have now given to them, this means the audience will be growing even greater.
The result of this will be a demand for the music in the CD stores, and a desire to see the players in performance. It is a slow task, and difficult for one person to do alone, but I am encouraged by the reception my work here has received so far.
I am also encouraged that the SA Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology is prepared to support my idea of a South Africa Festival, an event in which we can introduce audiences here to all genres of SA music, arts and culture. A proposal will be heading to the SA Ambassador in Washington shortly. I am also working on a collaboration between the local Eugene Ballet Company and Amampondo (certainly Africa’s greatest percussion group). Should this happen, it could form the basis for a Festival in the Pacific Northwest, and possibly California. By that time, the audience will have grown even more than it already has done, and success is assured.
So, in closing, thank you for supporting my efforts to bring SA music to America, and I hope our collaboration continues to develop.

My hands are sore from clapping, my throat is raw from singing and if the Hammersmith Apollo wasn't an all seating venue I would probably have put my back out trying some high kicking Zulu dancing, and do I care? Hell no, I've just watched Johnny Clegg.
He may have aged a bit, lost some hair, gained a few kilo's and the dancing is more sedate than what we have been used to, but the power and the passion is still there in the music. The crowded venue was on its feet throughout, dancing and singing along to a greatest hits (Juluka & Savuka) package of life and Africa, wrapped in pure energy. Roars of appreciation went up as favourites were recognised and none more so than for 'Impi', where the proverbial roof was raised, rarely have I seen one song so eagerly anticipated and so gratefully received.
After the first few songs, he slowed the pace with a sit down acoustic set, starting with 'African Sky Blue' that had us immediately standing again and singing 'Ian Botham' along with his 'yum bo hum'. An interesting addition to the Johnny Clegg sound was some jazzy interludes during one or two of the songs. This was slightly at odds with the driving Afro rock that I have been used to from him but added a new dimension to his music.
The South African press in London seems to be currently bombarded with
letters from ex-pats who love South Africa, but only the old South Africa. However it was heartening to hear the roar that went up when, for his encore he launched into one of his most moving songs, 'Asimbonanga' and it was lump in the throat time when he came to the 'role of honour' bit and cheers went up for Steven Biko and Victoria Mxgenge. His intros to the various songs gave insight to the songs' meanings and inspirations as well as giving us a good helping of social and political messages, without pushing the impatient in the audience too far.
From what I witnessed tonight, it is no small wonder than Johnny Clegg has been one of South Africa's most successful artists on the international stage. His powerful sounds and lyrics helped many of us through the dark days of apartheid, yet such is the depth of his songs that 7 years after the fall of apartheid, they still sound fresh and relevant.

KAREN ZOID LIVE ON TELEVISION
Once upon a time Johannesburg appeared like plain rock. Then someone
discovered gold in the rock and the future was born. On the 20th July, on Kyknet Television, Johan Botha presented his programme Draadloos and, in a tour de force, chipped away at rock in South Africa to deliver solid gold in the form of Karen Zoid. Someone who crosses language barriers and delivers innovation. The future is here.
For a full hour, with only two minutes of interviewing time, Karen Zoid was a magnet on stage, sucking every viewer into one of the most electrifying live television concerts in recent years. For those who had not yet seen her live, it was an eye opener that proved why her EMI debut CD is entitled "Poles Apart". She is poles apart from anybody else and in a class of her own.
Opening solo on her guitar with the plaintive Afrikaans songs "Engel" in which she sings of Potchefstroom "die mense daar rook almal boom", she moved on to "Vleesbaai" which is really very much about the cold winters of the heart in Melville. Karen honed her songwriting and singing skills as a busker in Melville for two years.
The band then jumped in with "Set of Wheels (Karoo Anthem)". Don Reinecke, the Prins of Prins Albert on lead and the co-writer of two songs of the evening, Jonno "Gentleman" Hall on terrific drums and Roland Westgate on great bass. "Set of Wheels" is getting lots of radio play now with words like "I heard they built a road out in the desert that goes on and on for miles and miles. Too hot for the cops. Just right for beginners."
She played the soulful "Southern Skies" and "Yuppie Scum". In "Waitress" she sang of her own experiences. "I’m smiling ‘cause it pays. I cry on my off days." The concert then picked up speed with "Afrikaners is Plesierig" - a delightful satire on old style Afrikanerdom and a song which has subsequently led to a petition in Pretoria by concerned Afrikaners who charged Karen Zoid with mockery of the sanctity of the past. Throwing her blonde tresses about in wild abandon she sang and screamed "Luister hier jou yuppie scum, jou preconceived millennium man. Ek maak jou kwaad want ek weet ek kan. Gee my nog 'n vatlap government plan. En die bedelaar staan met sy uitsteek hand en vra my vir net nog twee rand. Mense vrek oor die hele land en die res lê op Clifton se strand. Afrikaners is plesierig dit kan julle glo. Hulle hou van partytjie en dan maak hulle so. Babe is jy nog lief vir my. Ek gaan iemand anders vry."
Karen sang eleven songs in Afrikaans, in English and even in Zulu with an incredibly funny song entitled "Taxi". ("Move over, use your indicator, the brake is next to your accelerator"). She ended with "Maak nie regtig saak nie" in which she sings "Jy’s lief vir die party en lief vir die jol maar die kerk is leeg en die tronke vol en dit maak nie, maak nie regtig saak nie."
Her hour on TV ended too quickly. I felt sucked into her world, drained, yet wanting more. The following Monday night Kyknet repeated the show. Of course I willingly allowed myself to be sucked in again.
Take it from me, if Karen Zoid does a gig in your area, be there. She has only just begun. Catch her. You will love the ride into the future of music in this country. Chances are good that it will be a ride into the international scene with more English songs on a second CD. Maybe EMI could merge her English songs for an international release.

HARBOUR MUSIC CLUB
The Harbour Music Club ceased to exist a few weeks back, when the
Troubadour in Kalk Bay was taken over by a new lessee, who intends
to turn the venue into a Bakery (just what the world needs). We
hope the the HMC will rise again - if a new venue can be found.
The club ran for 18 months, every wednesday night, during which time we
featured 164 different acts (286 acts including repeats). Thanks to
all the musicians who came and played (there is some superb talent
out there), and to Rob Whiting for a lot of sound.

After a very successful "Tassenberg Stalteater" production at the KKNK this year a CD has been recorded and will be launched at the High Street Theatre in Bellville. The Tassenberg All Stars Live @ KKNK 2001 is a compilation album that includes songs of 14 different artists. The CD is 74 minutes long and was been recorded live at the KKNK.
