Barry Jarman of the legendary (and still active) SA pop group The Bats, passed away last week; and Eddie Boyle, who was best known as the bassist for SA rock group Stingray, died on stage during a live performance at the Blues Room in Sandton on the 19th June. FRUIT FLY BIRTHDAY
June is the two-year birthday month for Durbans Fruit Fly Navigators,
currently doing well on the Digest charts with the Seratonin album and Shout single. Shout is also the Fruit Fly Navigators contribution to the just-released 5FM Showcase 3: Unearthed compilation of new SA rock bands.
To celebrate this landmark anniversary, the band will be launching their unplugged set at selected venues. The band will also be showcasing the new material they have been writing over the past couple of months. Reuben Kinsella of the Sunday Times had this to say about the FFNs unplugged set: "Many fail dismally by simply playing as normal on other instruments, but the Flys had intelligently reworked their repertoire for an occasion to show off a different kind of musicianship."
More unplugged shows will be confirmed soon. Those upcoming Fruit Fly
Navigators dates (with support acts) are:
Sat 23 June - The Winston (Durban) w/ Not My Dog & Dwarf Project Crew
Thu 05 July - Churchills (Pietermaritzburg) UNPLUGGED with 340ML
Sat 07 July - Burn (Durban) with 340ML
Sun 08 July - The Jam (Margate) UNPLUGGED with 340 ML
Wed 18 July - Rivets (Durban) UNPLUGGED
Sat 21 July - Cloud 9 (Umhlanga) with Saron Gas

THE ZEN RISES
Zen Arcade are a new rock quartet out of Joburg, who are grabbing a lot of attention and interest following a string of blistering live
performances over the past few months. The bands sparkling first album, Snowflake, has just been released, and the lead single off that album, Crazy Over You, also appears on the new 5FM Showcase 3: Unearthed compilation. Named after a Hüsker Dü album, Zen Arcade are Alistair Mathie (bass), Andrew Cleland (drums), Ian McKenzie (vocal/guitar), and James Donaldson (guitar). Andrew Cleland was the drummer for Afrikult band The Kêrels and the other band members have all been involved with an assortment of bands before combining to form this strong line-up.
Zen Arcade delivered a stunning live performance to the assembled bands, mediatrons and music industry bigwigs (actually, they were all sporting their own hair) at the launch of the 'Showcase 3: Unearthed CD at the Radiopark Studios last week. The performance was broadcast live on 5FM who, alongside SonyMusic SA, are the driving force behind this CD compilation. Fueled by fine liquor, plus other sparkling live sets from the powerpopping Gauge and the punkadelic Tweak (to mention but two), the launch was described as "an absolute cracker". Kudos for this release and launch and general boost to SA rock to Barney Simon and 5FM, Paul Thackwray and Sony, and Beth and the Authentic team! (SS)
See below for upcoming Zen Arcade dates and tour news. {Zen Arcade have beaten to the bottom of the alphabetical gig list by newcomer Karen Zoid! - ed}

3. NEW AND RECENT RELEASES
---------------------------
THC RELEASE APHRIKA
THC is the sprawling Durban-based trip-Afrika collective who are still
among the leading lights in the African trance movement alongside Jorge
Carlos and Nagual. THCs trippy indigenous and acoustic compositions
have been recently used on National Geographic documentaries and
promotional videos for the KZN tourism board. Aphrika, the groups
new, second album is an eclectic fusion of world music, drum 'n bass,
rock and trance. Aphrika was produced by Durban sound engineer and DJ, Matthew Fink, and is distributed by Intervention Arts. It features a wide selection of instruments, from the traditional didjerido, djembe
drums, Congo drums, steel drums, marimbas and trumpets - to the digital. It also features a guest appearance by Ampie of BOO!
The bands legendary live performances are not easy to forget. A massive spectacle of writhing bodies, fire, Ultra Violet art and dance, fused with a super-energetic frontman and solid musicianship (and lots of smoke, but no smoke machine). Their latest album emulates these live
shows in every way, taking listeners from the techno-tribal dreamworld
of Aphrika and off Towards Higher Consciousness {THC, aha! - alert
ed}. The eight-piece band were in Zambia last week to support The
Orb at the Solar Eclipse festival. Coming to a head-space near you soon!

MONDMUSIEK - BREYTEN BREYTENBACH
A famous poet, reading his own stuff? Easy to screw up, easy to make it sound as boring as a mute Velvaglo ad. Not so here. Haul in soundmeisters Paul Riekert, Jean Marais, Jurgen von Wechmar and Albert du Plessis and employ able-bodied musicians like Laurinda Hofmeyr, Schalk Joubert and the good people from Benguela, among others, and you get a benchmark album. As probably Afrikaans' most influencial poet, Breytenbach's words can normally speak for themselves, but the music takes them to a new level. So say hello to the darkest chill-out album ever to hit the market, dripping with words richer and sharper than the blood-diamond trade. It lurches from almost rap to drunken song, then back to meandering, but driven, spoken word. 'Ek sal sterf en na my vader gaan' is inspirational; 'Song of the masters' something whistled on the battlefield. Any author trying to emulate this: quit now. Oh yes, the packaging is also awesome.

WATKIN TUDOR JONES JNR - MEMOIRS OF A CLONE (Chameleon)
To his friends he's just Waddy, but on this, his eclectic and eccentric debut, solo album he begins by introducing himself (on the cover) by his full "title". It seems WTJ Jnr has this thing with names, identities, and alter egos, and 'Memoirs Of A Clone' is his attempt to fuse all these different characters and diverse musical influences and styles, into a cogent and entertaining whole. No easy task, but a notable success regardless. Waddy first appeared as a member of the (original) Original Evergreens and made a large contribution to 'Puff The Magik', the group's deservedly award-winning first album. But a few "creative differences" later, Waddy left the group and little was heard from him over the past few years.
But now he's back with a wildly inventive and hugely popular live act, and an album that reflects his multiple personas, musical tastes, and relevant and irreverent views on the world around him and us. 'Memoirs Of A Clone' continually spills over with fresh ideas, strange voices, and a wide and weird range of sound effects and bytes. His clipped and funny hip hop lyrics are delivered in a variety of droll but sussed voices ("Don't treat objects like women", "You talk too loud in the movies, won't you please be a little bit considerate"). And each song seems to arrive from another musical planet.
'Max Normal' introduces us to Waddy's best-known persona, a combination of Mr Bean and the robot from 'Futurama' ("I'm Max Normal, Dang-dang-de-dang-dang-dang, dress code, strictly formal"). The song 'Watkin Tudor Jones' is autobiographical and intensely personal and the opening track, 'Good Old Fashion Loving', is a languid electronic love song in the Massive Attack mode. Producer Adrian Levi yet again adds his name and expertise to some of the more innovative recent new SA music. Here he retains and supports the general feel and mood of the album by keeping the musical arrangements stripped down and sparse. This ensures that on songs like 'You Talk Too Loud', 'Precious Things' and 'Doing Nothing' specifically, and generally throughout this absorbing album, the emotion in the words and the alienation in the mood is clear and almost tangible.
There's also some kind of general sub-plot involving a chocky-socky Kung Fu character called Ching who pops up now and then to explain the plot. So 'Memoirs Of A Clone' really is a weird and swervy ride, but then, just when you think you've got your head around this inventive and evocative modern musical smorgasbord, the album finishes off with a groovy, jazzy version of the old Chords' classic, 'Shaboom', with Johnny Fourie on guitar, and its well-known pay-off line, "Life can be a dream, sweetheart". In this context obviously a throwaway clue. "Where's Waddy?" you may well ask after hearing this song and all that's preceded it. Judging from this modern, snappy, electronica-with-a-rock-heart, funny, trippy and imaginative collection, it's just impossible to know, we just have to keep looking and listening. Maximum Abnormal! 4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------
SHILOH'S CORNER
LIGHTHOUSE
Canada has always been an understated highlight for the seminal flower power invasion of the late sixties. The very talent that has risen up from the Rocky mountain way includes Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, the Guess Who, Joe Walsh and many more. One particular group known as Lighthouse stands branded as a peace band, achieving no less than three successive Juno awards as Canada's finest group. With nine gold and platinum records under the belt this fourteen piece brass ensemble smashed the bluesey barriers and parameters that Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears had set up. Out of the paisley defines of a Long Island hipster group called The Paupers, came the diverse and complex wrist drumming of Skip Prokop. Having sessioned with Richie Havens, Steve Miller, Santana and a number of the Bill Graham discoveries Skip came to international focus during the Super Session album with Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper. Largely called upon to assemble a group to back Janis Joplin after Big Brother and the Holding Company had folded, Skip disembarked from this assignment due to his artistic and obsessive interest in combining rock and jazz with classical.
In the latter part of 1968 he put together a diverse combination of highly talented musicians in particular Ralph Cole on lead guitar, Paul Hoffert on keyboards and the burley Bob McBride on vocals (latter stages). During the birth of 1970 Lighthouse did numerous concerts with various symphony orchestras - one in particular the Edmonton Symphony which was referred to Gary Brooker for Procol Harum's live concert. Beyond these complex projects Lighthouse performed at the Isle of Wight alongside Jimi Hendrix and collaborated with the Japanese to perform at the Expo 70 in Osaka, a momentous occasion that marked the first rock ballet under the close guidance of choreographer, Brian McDonald and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.
Skip Prokop became the first rock musician to address the Canadian Parliament and departed from the group in 1974. Ralph Cole kept the boat afloat with one last tour in 1976 and to date one memorable reunion in 1982. During the Isle of Wight performance a standing ovation resulted in them appearing twice only to be equaled by the evening show with Jimi Hendrix. Yet even success would have its complications when comprising a large number of musicians with brass and classical ensemble. They turned down an invitation to play at Woodstock on the basis that they did not believe the festival would be a success and the following year refused to tour South Africa due to the political status quo. A total of nine albums were released and one in particular "One Fine Morning" gave them the international breakthrough.
In 1972 they performed at the Carnegie Hall and brought the house down. The following year they released their underrated "Can You Feel It". This album featured some of the most formidable back breaking brass rock ever applied to wax. The seven single "Pretty Lady" had reasonable penetration in the world market and Lighthouse go down as a testimony of spiritual power combined with highly talented individuals that created the possible during impossible times.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
BARRIERS - DOG DETACHMENT (1989)
http://www.rock.co.za/legends/dogdetachment
To my taste, 'Barriers' is a better album than Dog Detachment's excellent 'Fathoms of Fire' {Reviewed in Issue #109 - ed}. "To my taste" means not only more up tempo rock songs but more substance to the lyrics as well. The lyrics are intelligent, cleverly written, and the rhymes flow effortlessly. 'Fathoms of Fire' is excellent; 'Barriers' is great. And I don't use the word "great" lightly. This one strikes a chord in me.
On 'Barrier's', Dog Detachment forsakes the ambiguity of the previous album (by "ambiguity" I mean a statement of two meanings, not a statement that is unclear). 'Barriers' is clearly about the changing times in South Africa during the mid-Eighties, and the struggle for freedom. Also, to me, it is clearly about the world in the year 2001 and beyond.
'Barriers' begins with a bang, with a song titled 'Barriers'. This song accuses those in the way of progress of crying "crocodile tears" and of
claiming the problems are not their fault, while "...the mountains and the rivers all scream your guilt...." Like the rest of the album, this is powerful and timeless music that still resonates, and could apply to other peoples in other lands.
The rock anthem 'White Flag' is a plea for an end to violence and war.
"Give me a white flag...." Nice background thrushes, too.
'I Will Be There' promises: "I will be there to catch you when you fall." A love song if any song on 'Barriers' is one. Though there are more traditional love songs here, too. 'I Come Running' is one, with the refrain, "Love is blind". At times rock is, and should be, about love, no?
The unavoidably infectious thumping tune 'Beat the Drum' is one of the songs on this album with overtly political lyrics (but one without specific names, places, times, etc.) is one of several that you will later enjoy without playing the album. It lodges in the brain, pleasantly. "Beat the drum, Africa, beat the drum if you can/ Say what's on your mind when no one really seems to give a damn...."
'Monochrome Man' -- a song about society, along the lines of 'Mr. Jones' or 'Nowhere Man', as well one that is overtly political. It sings of not wishing to "...live in slavery...." and "Don't make me a monochrome man...."
The dirge-like in pace, but not depressing, 'Love Will Come' closes the
album. A sober and thoughtful finish.
There are other songs on the album equally melodic and smartly written, but those mentioned stand out by virtue of some musical hook or lyrical
cleverness that makes them noteworthy.
All in all, 'Barriers' is a wonderful set of songs. As on 'Fathoms of
Fire', Dog Detachment has the 80s sound, which still sounds great to me. Additionally, the lyrics are still relevant for all nations today, not just South Africa -- however you interpret the lyrics.
Musically, this album is fine rock, and when one listens closely to the
well-crafted lyrics, a powerful and intense rock album emerges.
While 'Barriers' is partly of its place and time lyrically and musically, it also has the timeless rock quality of Dog Detachment's 'Fathoms of Fire'. Both are rock albums for thinking people everywhere.

LONDON LEKKER
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
FORBIDDEN FRUIT - HOT RS (1978)
Listening to the disco music coming out of South Africa, one thing that
immediately stands out is how it rocks. International disco classics tended to be somewhat lightweight, relying on the repetitive disco beat for character (e.g. 'I Feel Love' by Donna Summer) or were funk laden floor stompers like Hot Chocolate's 'You Sexy Thing'. Not that there was anything wrong with this. They are rightfully classics, they just don't rock.
Like their contemporaries Buffalo, Hot R.S. created some memorable
floorfillers with disco covers of rock classics. In the case of 'Forbidden Fruit', the centrepiece is a cover of Iron Butterfly's 1968 classic 'In a Gadda Da Vida', a song that would rock even if Carike Keuzenkamp were to sing it (...then again, maybe not). Hot R.S.'s version fairly pounds along at a pace more furious than the original, with added Russian Cossack type chanting of "Hey!", a stirring guitar contribution {by Trevor Rabin - ed} and an interlude for a bit of serious drum banging {by Kevin Kruger - ed}. This was destined to be a classic cover.
Side 1 of the album is essentially one long megamix, starting with 'In a gadda...' merging into 'The Garden of Eden' {UK#1 hit for Frankie Vaughan in 1957; also a US#12 for Joe Valino in 1956 - ed} and flowing back into Act II of 'In a gadda...'. It's a practically seamless piece, although the middle track does tend to conform more to the international standards of disco music with
a strong female vocal, standard disco beat and some brassy bits for good measure.
The opening track on side 2, 'Temptation', lives up to the expectations of the rather naughty cover featuring a naked man & woman sitting 'inside' an apple. The male vocals are somewhat seedy while the breathy female French vocals includes some heavy breathing that doesn't quite rival Meg Ryan's 'When Harry met Sally' faking, but is more convincing than the average German porn film.
The other two tracks on this side conform more to the normal rules of disco with 'Adam's Apple' being a brassy, sassy somewhat funky number and 'Snake Dance' being pretty straightforward disco complete with girly 'Na na na' chorus backing the main strong male vocal.
All in all it is surely one of the greatest South African disco albums, for the most part rocking, but leaving space for some conventional vanilla disco tunes (Häagen-Dazs vanilla mind you).

SPOTLIGHT ON BLONDIE CHAPLIN
A 3-part review of a rare talent by Bas Möllenkramer
PART 3
FRAGILE THREAD
First release expected very soon
Any day now we may look forward to the new Blondie Chaplin solo album, nine years after Ostrich Man. Rumours abound that Blondie Chaplin has a bit of help on this album, from a few members of the Rolling Stones, with whom he toured extensively a few years ago.
Fragile Thread is a tremendous record, and we find Blondie Chaplin creating a whole new playing field all for himself. The quality of the singing and playing and the warmth of the songs themselves, make this a definitive statement.
One of the albums up-tempo songs "52 Letters" has already received its live debut on an obsure charity concert video recorded in Chicago by the Nicolas Tremulis band a few years ago. Due to the appearance of the Band's Rick Danko, the concert is suitably titled The First Waltz.
Another very powerful song "Semolina" was played live by the three remaining Flames in South Africa as part of their reunion concert appearance in late 2000. Regrettably this reviewer was unable to attend the show, in part due to the small matter of 15 000 km.
And a third song, "Where I Should Always Be" was premiered on the Band's comeback album, High On The Hog, from 1996 on which Blondie Chaplin participated.
One of the albums heart-stopping moments is the sparsely accompanied "When I'm Walking" where we hear just Blondie's voice and acoustic guitar, superbly driven on by some stunning Hammon organ playing, and nothing else, no bass, no drums, nothing.
So we continue to wait patiently for Fragile Thread to hit the shops. If you only have money for one new CD this month, then hold everything, and put it aside for Fragile Thread, from the incomparable Blondie Chaplin.
We invite all readers to email their 50th birthday wishes to Blondie Chaplin to this reviewer (see below). They will be collected and published on the Flames website from June 2001, in time for Blondie Chaplin's birthday in July. Do it now!

BEDROCK IN 'NAM
BedRock is a four-piece rock band based in Oranjemund, which is situated in southern Namibia, and which is still a thriving bastion of rock 'n roll in the area. The band released its first CD, 'La Cantina', in May 2000 and the second CD of original compositions, entitled 'Recovery', is scheduled for release in the second quarter of 2001. The band consists of four members: Peter Shout (bass and vocals), Kenny Ramage (guitar and vocals), Mike Millad, (guitar and vocals) and Eddie Heusdens (pots 'n pans).
To download sample MP3 files of tracks contained on 'Recovery' and to get all other details (including how to get hold of Bedrock if you're thinking of throwing a party anywhere in that quite large area):

RABBITT
I love Rabbitt and I think it to be one of the world's greatest injustices that they never made it internationally. Otherwise, browsing the SA Rock Files website, I was reminded of acts like Johnny Clegg and Clout, both of which surely brought back memories for me of days gone by. I'm originally for Iceland (I've lived in Japan for 12 years now) and I remember songs like "Substitute", "Save Me" and "Scatterlings Of Africa" being big radio hits there.

LOOKING FOR JOHNNY
I am particularly interested in JOHNNY KONGOS & THE G MEN who I saw perform live in the early sixties. I wish just to make it known that I would be especially keen to acquire ALL their early albums if they were to be re-issued on CD. Selections from Dickie Loader & The Blue Jeans, Staccatos, Mickie Most, etc would also attract my attention. I hope you may be be able to channel my input in the right direction.
Kind regards and sincere thanks.

WHAT IS SACD?
What the hell is SACD? Well it does not stand for South African CD.
Super Audio CD is poised to become the preferred music listening format of the 21st century. It's a next generation carrier that reproduces not only the musicician's artistic expression, but also recreates every detail of the atmosphere, nuance, and space surrounding the original music source. In plain English {yes, please - ed}: it will make you feel like you are right there in the studio with the recording artist.
The difference between CD and SACD? CD uses a PCM (Pulse Code Modulation) recording format to convert music signals into digital sounds for recording and playback, the SACD uses new DSD (Direct Stream Digital) technology, a whole new approach to digital recording. One of the key advantages of DSD is that it can carry four times as much information as the old CD/PCM format. DSD also has a superior frequency response and dynamic range across the audible frequency range, which combine to reproduce music that is remarkably pure and faithful to the original.
But rest assured, SACD will not replace conventional CD. There are a
variety of discs including single layer, dual layer and hybrid layer. The latter combines technology for the new and the existing format.
"So what about the availability of the discs in SA" you may ask. In their lastest Winter Style promotion catalogue Sony SA advertised a range of SACD players and a small selection of titles from Sony Music. Only one call to Sony Music and I found that they are importing quite a range of titles from light classical to pop and rock. Of course you won't find these titles at Musica. Yet. But Look and Listen will be stocking them soon and what they haven't got they can order for you. And the hardware is available from most top-end Hi-fi shops.
Happy listening

SA ARTISTS LIVE IN LONDON

MIDWEEK AT TURNPIKE LANE
Piet Botha, Valiant Swart and Akkedis
at the Salisbury Pub 13 June 2001
Being a school night, the crowd was not as strong as it had been on Saturday, but there was a good helping of dedicated groupies and those just wanting a midweek jol to make it happen. It was also Valiant's "last night with the poms".
There was no messing around tonight as Piet Botha and Jonathan Martin
launched into an in-your-face, hard hitting rock set. Two guitars have never sounded better together. They were joined for the last few numbers by the Akkedis boys and blasted out a spine chilling air guitar inducing couple of songs, definitely not for the fainthearted.
Valiant Swart has a guitar called "ice cream" which is the colour of vanilla ice cream, but the sounds were far from vanilla flavour. Determined to leave on a high, Valiant, accompanied by Albert 'the stuff that legends are made of' Frost, Rudi Dennis and Schalk van der Merwe, performed the set of the tour. Each songs was a orgasm of sound, flowing from the stage in forceful torrents. Of particular force was 'Cyber Sakkie' and 'Roekeloos'. The latter, for the non-South African readers, translates as 'Reckless' and I know what you're thinking, you thinking Braai-ing Adams, but comparisons to the man who did everything for you would be like comparing raw wors still in it's clingwrap with piping hot, flame grilled, juicy, freshly braaied wors. A fitting farewell.
I left after this set and just as Akkedis was starting theirs. Nothing personal ouens, but I needed some sleep, besides which there's always Friday night. Still the little I saw tonight only entrenched my belief that Afrikaans Rock music is alive and well, and boy is it kicking.
