I FEEL THE NEED FOR THE SA ROCK DIGEST
Last Thursday night (repeated on Sunday morning), on SABC3's "Greed" programme, the Million Rand question was: "Name the top 4 South Artists of the century, according to a poll among readers of the South African Rock Digest e-mag and visitors to the Amuzine online music magazine."
The team had elected to cash-out, but played this round as a "what if?". They got 3 out of the 4 right.

HERE'S JOHNNY!!
The releasing of classic SA rock albums on Benjy Mudie's RetroFresh label (many for the first time on CD) continues apace, with recent additions to the catalogue including Hawk's 'African Day', Lesley Rae Dowling's 'Conspirare (Best Of), and 'The Dynamics' collection. Now, Falling Mirror's infamous 'concept' album, 'Johnny Calls The Chemist' gets its opportunity to step up to the spotlight and display its murky and psychotic depths.
Although the 'Johnny' single still gets its fair share of SA airplay, and already appears on 'Shattered' (the 1992 'Best Of Falling Mirror' CD compilation), this is the first time any Falling Mirror album has been released on CD (releases of the other three albums - 'Zen Boulders', 'The Storming Of The Loft', and 'Fantasy Kid' - are imminent, as is a possible release of the band's previously-unavailable final album, 'Hammerhead Hotel').
The extensive sleeve notes for the 'Johnny' CD had to be edited down to fit into the booklet, but the full story (The Director's Cut, if you will) can be read at the Falling Mirror website:

RAMASES

Remember the obscure UK artist Ramases who recorded the cult album 'Space Hymns' in 1971 with the then newly-formed 10cc? Well actor Peter Stormare (the woodchipper man from "Fargo") is a huge fan of the music of Ramases and he set out to track down Ramases' widow Sel... and he found her!
Peter wrote on the 31st of May:

regarding 'Neanderthal Man', etc. They created that sound and song... but never recorded it... Hotlegs or 10cc did while RAMASES and SEL where in the US to promote the first album.

MELVILLE MIXER GOES MUSIC MAD
The Mixer in Melville, traditionally a supper theatre, has turned its weekend focus on to South African music. From 8 June, this quaint venue will host Afrikaans bands ranging from the alternative and obscure to the more commercially accessible. Each weekend will feature a different artist to keep the momentum running.
Coming on board as a sponsor is JIP Magazine, a Beeld supplement that comes out every Wednesday, which will also be highlighting the featured artists of the following weekend. Says editor, Hanlie Gouws: "We fully support the other Afrikaans music market, the so-called alternatives. These are the people who saved Afrikaans music just when it seemed we were going to have to listen to tunes about seagulls for the rest of our lives. These are the people who gave us a reason to geddup, standup and dance. It is rebellion personified. And it works. It's a JIP thing ..."
Anton Goosen will be performing on opening night. He is one of the most respected and talented artists in our country and his reputation precedes him across the musical spectrum. He will be performing with a four-piece band. It is a re-interpretation of his beautiful folk songs. On Saturday night The Mixer presents Paul Riekert and Anton L'Amour in an exclusive unplugged performance. Riekert is the brains behind the highly successful industrial band, Battery 9 while Anton L'Amour is guitarist for bands like Valiant Swart and Frank Opperman.

JIMMY 12" RETURN - PEREZ ARRIVE
It seems that Jimmy 12", the five-man Durban rap-grunge outfit who blew up a mini storm a few months ago, has survived the loss of its iconic vocalist Nic Olsen and is back in the rock fray. The band has a new lead singer, some new material, and is looking to return to those heady days of sold-out gigs, a strong word-of-mouth reputation and sharing bills with The Mission, Hothouse Flowers, Tree, and The Springbok Nude Girls.
Nic Olsen has moved on to front Perez, the hotly tipped new Durban rock band formed from the remnants of Pistolfish, Ichabod and Jimmy 12". Perez (isn’t that name a little too close to "Gomez"?) are Matt Wilkinson (guitar), Adam Connor (bass), Mike Goddard (drums), and Nic Olsen (vocals), and the band recently completed recording their first demo under the watchful ear of David Birch.

'THEN JAZZ MUST COME TO THE MOUNTAIN'
Does Randy Crawford belong at a jazz festival? Does South Africa support jazz festivals? Why does the Cape Town event call itself the North Sea Jazz Festival?
You can find out in SAFM’s ‘Then Jazz Must Come To The Mountain’, Nigel Vermaas’s documentary on the 2001 African Harvest North Sea Jazz Festival in Cape Town, held on 30th and 31st March. It’s the first of three documentaries - the other two will focus on the controversial music workshops tied in with the festival (4th & 8th July) and an in-depth look at the visiting musicians and their music (18th and 22nd July).
The first programme provides a sound picture of the event: Nigel takes you to the Good Hope Centre where you’ll hear the opinions of festival-goers, criticisms, management’s responses, live music, and the thoughts of musicians such as Phil Woods, Sathima Bea Benjamin and Marcus Miller.
"Inevitably", says Nigel, "there will be some similarities to my documentaries on the first Cape North Sea festival last year, but this year was a very different mix. Also last year I had to supply much more background to how the festival came about - in 2001 we’ve all moved on. And, thanks to Marilyn Thompson and her team, this year I had much greater access to interviews with musicians. To chat to jazz artists whose music I have always loved was exhilarating! Phil Woods and Joe Zawinul were totally honest and outspoken, Marcus was thoughtful, Mal Waldron cracked jokes, and Sathima was emotional about finally performing in Cape Town ..."

ERNIE SMITH RELEASES DEBUT ALBUM AND HEADS EAST
Ernie Smith’s debut album, ‘Child Of The Light’, has just been officially released and launched by Sheer Sound in South Africa. This fresh R ‘n B/jazzy pop mixture features Smith’s guitar and vocal skills and 12 smooth tracks. But Ernie isn’t around to celebrate, as this very highly rated new SA artist is currently visiting Singapore and Malaysia on a three-week promotional tour to coincide with the release of his new album in these countries.
The tour includes interviews on principal radio stations around the country, including Malaysia’s top station, ‘Lights & Easy’, where a number of tracks off the album have already been playlisted for a few weeks. An hour-long documentary of his tour is being filmed and will be flighted on MTV Malaysia. As part of the promo tour, Ernie will be performing at Planet Hollywood KL, as well as at the Telecom Towers, (tallest building in the world). This is the first time an international artist will be performing there. According to Ms Mastura, Marketing Manager for Music & Music, this event will be recorded for Guinness Book of World Records. The Queen of Malaysia will be attending the launch. This is the first time in the history of the Asian Pacific region that the Queen will launch the album of an international artist.

ASHTON SAYS "GOOD NYTE"
The sad end of an epoch is upon us. The Glam Vamp is soon to shuffle off this mortal coil (to join the choir invisible, etc), leaving thousands of Glitterbabies fatherless. Ashton Nyte, star of stage, screen and occasional bank-heist will be saying goodbye to the character of the Glam Vamp, the glittered feathered fiend who so delighted fans of Ashton's ‘The Slender Nudes’ album with his glam-rock posturing and camp theatricality.
In a shower of glitter and a flood of tears from bereaved fans, and a clear and respectful nod to the Bowie’s "Ziggy Stardust", Ashton Nyte said an emotional "Cheers" to his Glamorous creation last Friday in Pretoria at the Nile Crocodile in Pretoria. Ashton Nyte remains the rock upon which the hopes of the South African music-loving public's are built {Mmmm... really??? - cynical Ed}, and he will be back. Keep your ears and eyes open for the next chapter in the Ashton Nyte saga. There are rumours of a new album and a new direction, but whom can you trust these days? It's such a dirty world...

NEW ALBUM ON THE WAY FROM THE SSQ
There’s been nothing new (album-wise) from the Soweto String Quartet since 1998's ‘Millennia’, but the word is that the group is currently in the studio, readying a new album for release in a few months time! The main reason for the delay in getting something new on to the shelves from the squeaky trio is the incredible demand for live performances by the group from around the world!
Although the recording process is still in its first phase, we do know that the SSQ is working with renowned producer and solo artist, Don Laka. Laka, who recently scooped a SAMA Award for ‘Best Male Artist’, is expected to bring an element of jazz and kwaito to the trademark SSQ sound, making for many surprises in the 2001 release. Other news is that the upcoming album is likely to consist mainly of self-penned tracks, as opposed to the cover versions on the first three albums.

WAIT FOR ME - ROSWELL KINGS
The Roswell Kings are named after the legendary New Mexico town of Roswell (site of a 4th July 1947 UFO crash landing, apparently). But thats where the Southern and Outer-space links end as musically they are much closer to the down-to-earth Seattle sounds of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.
Their CD EP, 'Wait For Me' contains 3-tracks; "Wait For Me', 'Oxford Rd' and 'Headlights'. Produced by the legendary Robin Auld who, despite being better known for a more laid-back rock sound, has coaxed an epic grungy-rock feel from this talented trio consisting of: Andrew Lund (vocals, guitar), Nick Lord (drums) and André Lotter (bass).
'Wait For Me' is a fast-paced hard rocker, 'Oxford Rd' is a slow, blues-y song of pain and loss with a stunning guitar solo and a thundering climax. 'Headlights' is more of an acoustic rock song and would have fitted perfectly on last years Jayhawks album 'Smile', but by no stretch of the imagination is it a ballad.
The Roswell Kings supported Sunways at the Jam (review in next week's Digest) on Friday night (1 June). Sven McAlpine was the bassist here and his fluid bass runs complemented the powerful rock guitar of Andy Lund perfectly. Sven has been around with various bands like Ohm and Colossal Head and is both a drummer and bassist. (BC)

THE MISUNDERSTOOD (axe men of a finer nature)
Occasionally amidst the pink and purple surrealism of the flower world comes the sound of a fendor stratocaster, bold and significant, with ungodly force and determined to soar above the beatnik rabble that wallowed in the incense of fashion. Such is the case of an immaculate conception, born in 1963, Riverside, California, namely Greg Treadway (guitar & keyboards), Rick Moe (drums), George Phelps (lead guitar). Known as The Blue Notes, this surf guitar combo were predestined to smash the psychedelic barriers of ambient, and progress into a catalyst of niche electric blues. By 1965 Rick Brown had joined them on vocals and harmonica with Steve Whiting on bass, yet their line-up had become so uncoordinated and the diversity of their style so confusing that they changed the name of their group to The Misunderstood.
With a combination of surf guitar and blues classics The Misunderstood staggered up the spiral staircase of acknowledgement desperately trying to create some form of consistent individualism. By 1966 Phelps decided to leave and was replaced by the steel guitar genius of Glen Ross Campbell. Their first single, "You don't have to go" / "Who's been talking?" received considerable airplay on the underground stations of L.A. One particular station in San Bernardino had recently recruited John Ravenscroft (Peel), an eccentric Englishman who saw the opportunity to make it big in the States due to his exceptional knowledge on the Beatle history, strategy and the marketable Mersey power. In the words of John Ravenscroft "..Glen Campbell looked incredible thin and ill with exceptionally long hair, hunched over his steel guitar and playing the most unbelievable stuff I'd ever hear. Coupled with Steve Whiting's bass and bottleneck, the combination was electric and astounding." Ravenscroft immediately adopted the band as his own while The Misunderstood became one of the most significant live acts, notorious for cyclical feedback effect which hypnotised the masses wherever they were playing.
John felt determined to bring this cash cow to the UK, but fate struck a hardy blow when Rick Brown was drafted for Vietnam. Nevertheless these long haired flower cats arrived on English soil with hope and enthusiasm. A young guitarist called Tony Hill from South Shields replaced Rick and the rest of the story becomes sad and distorted. While staying at John's mom's flat and living off handouts Peel's brother Allen, decided to rid his mother of these freaks by getting them a deal with Fontana records. According to Glen the only two people that believed in them were producer Dick Leahy and a young engineer hooked on acid, called Roger. They recorded six songs, two in particular "I can take you to the sun" / "Who do you love" became their debut. Their following single, "Children of the sun", captured feedback and reverb with such intensity that even Hendrix would have marvelled at the ability of these psychedelic stalwarts.
British visas, work permits, and a further Vietnam draft for Rick Moe resulted in the end of The Misunderstood. Glen tried to hold his own but eventually revamped the group under its new name Juicy Lucy. Tony Hill left and joined an outstanding progressive group called High Tide while Rick Brown finally found his peace in India with the Vaishnava sect of Hinduism. His raga influence could still be felt in the rhythm guitar of Tony Hill. The Misunderstood can be described as a spiritual journey of five men, destined for great things under the trial and temptations of this imperfect world. John Peel once described them as "prophets of a new order", but in the better sense of the word, they were sincere wanderers, playing in the fields of God.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
YESTERDAYS BEST, Volumes 1, 2, & 3 -- MORCD 502, 536, & 563
I don't know about y'all, but in my world perfection is rare while pretty good is common. However, I believe perfection can be glimpsed by listening to the pop songs of the Sixties, and the songs of a million drums causing you to clap your hands and stamp your feet for two and a half minutes of pop perfection.
You know the basic pop song structure: verse/chorus/verse/chorus, break for the middle eight, the last verse/chorus, then fade into infinity.... Season with rhythm, melody, catchy lyrics, and emotion. In many pop songs this combination achieves perfection, and it seems to me that South Africans mastered this form absolutely, bringing to it a strong melodic sense as well their own sense of place.
It's a simple structure, but like the artwork of the ancient Egyptians, it only seems rigid to us temporarily moderns. There were great ancient Egyptian artists who worked well within their artistic conventions and rose above the commonplace. Pop songs might be simple, but there's a world of variety in the singing and playing. Think of 'Timothy' by Four Jacks and a Jill. Now think of 'Little Soldier Blue' by Gwynneth Ashley-Robin. I could never confuse the two, but they are both wonderful pop songs using the same simple pop song structure.
Despite some biases that some South Africans (none of them SA Rock Digest subscribers, to be sure) have held, local is lekker and local pop does sound great. Listen to the pop songs on the three CD discs of the compilation series 'Yesterday's Best'. Here you'll find that the melodic sense, beat, and musicianship are as strong as can be. When I listen to the 'Yesterday's Best' compilations, and 'The Best of SA Pop' series, I sometimes sense a parallel universe where 'I'm On Fire' by Maria, 'I Never Loved a Man' by Margaret Singana, 'Count the Red Cars' by Penny Croft, 'Shabby Little Hut' by the Bats, 'Butchers and Bakers' and 'Cry to Me' by the Staccatos, 'Miss Eva Goodnight' by Crocodile Harris, and many others, were worldwide hits and are part of the world's musical heritage, not just South Africa's. They are that good and fit in with any oldies' playlist that well.
The 'Yesterday's Best' series proves my point that SA pop is world class. While most of the songs on the three CDs are of South African origin, sprinkled throughout the series are some international pop songs. Due to the vicissitudes the light pop-rock playlist of the station I grew up listening to in the States, I was unaware of some of the international hits on 'Yesterday's Best' until I bought these CDs. For example, I had never heard the songs here by American artists Sandy Posey or the Mike Curb Congregation. And I'm still not sure if the "artists" The Wombles are British or American {British... Mike Batt in disguise! - ed}. But my proving point about SA local being lekker is that all of the songs on these CDs, American, British, International, or South African, all play well one after another -- each one is a slice of pop perfection no matter its nation of origin.
For a better understanding of what I'll trying to tell you... give a listen to any of the 'Yesterday's Best' CDs. Pop Perfection is achievable.
Out of the morass of conflicting information I have only a vague idea of what perfection in life might be. But I can glimpse pop music perfection by playing 'Yesterday's Best, Volumes 1, 2, and 3.' These CDs are full of lekker pop tunes which only happen to be local.

London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
This corner of the Digest has belonged to London-based John Samson for quite a while now. John's tongue-in-cheek style of writing has long been admired by readers of this Digest. His reviews of both classic rock albums and recent live concerts in London are legendary. John has also been a major contributor to the SA Rock Files archive websites, based mainly around his vinyl collection of 70s & 80s SA rock. He is also a lover of music charts and a dedicated statistician and has a draft version of the "SA Top 20 Singles 1969 to 1989" ready in book-form and looking for a publisher.

Commentary:
Olivia Neutron-Bomb took over the top spot at the expense of SA's Alan
Garrity who had spent 4 weeks at the top. Lance James continued to climb, jumping up 2 places with Vicky (Some references spell it Vicki), which was from a movie of the same name.
Des and Dawn came storming into the top 10 with probably their most well known hit, 'The Seagulls Name was Nelson'. It was to be their only hit between 1969 and 1989, but remains a seminal work that has become an integral part of the history of South African popular music.
Lower down the charts, the Dealians were making another challenge on the top 10 with 'When Love Comes Knocking at Your Door' jumping from 19 to 16 and Lincoln jumped from 16 to 14 with 'Lonely Days and Lonely Nights'.
Zimbabwean John Edmond entered the top 20 with 'Boom Sha La La', a song
written for him by Bruce Woodley of the Seekers. Also Starting chart runs were Neil Diamond's 'Shilo' and The Rolling Stones' 'Brown Sugar'.

Imagine a mixture of late '60s Donovan and 'Endless Journey' Acid Psych and that's what's on this disc. The tripped out "Sugar Man" is a fantastic piece of prime US '60s psych with weird electronic effects whilst "Only Good For Conversation" has some brilliant acid fuzz riffing. Mixing social protest and wigged out tripping this is one of the best '60s US albums we've heard in a long while...

UPLIFTING MUSIC
Oddly enough, after I listened to Otis Waygood [the recent CD re-issue from RetroFresh], I read some more in Ian Fleming's James Bond thriller 'Doctor No', and found a mention of a 'Waygood Otis' lift (in Doctor No's lair). Now, I had always thought the only part of their name that referred to elevators was the 'Otis' part -- maybe 'Otis', by itself, is the name of the American division of the company. I never heard of 'Waygood Otis', and I've been in plenty of elevators and have read in bronze 'Otis' overhead many times. The 'Waygood' part of the band's name I always took, reasonably and justifiably, to mean that they were better than good, that they were "way good, man."
Anyway, I learned something about SA music from a James Bond book.

LOCAL MUSIC
I'm a freelance journalist for the Big Issue and I'm in the process right now of gathering a selection of SA band members (we plan on 6 musicians from members of Honeymoon Suites to a variety of Kwaito acts) for a "round table" style debate about the current local music scene. We plan to publish this for the Sept issue of the Big Issue.
I was hoping that you may have some questions or issues that you think are worth addressing regarding topics such as the lack of international recognition that local bands get, the validity of the 'local is lekker' motif, the professionalism (or lack of) in the industry or anything else that you feel is worth bringing up with a group of people for whom this will probably be the only time they are in the same room together.

RATS AT THE GRAND WAZOO
Hi and Greetings from Sunny Prague. I come from Pretoria but have been living and working in the Czech Republic for almost 6 years now.
A few months back I was looking at the list of gigs that the Radio Rats played back in 1979 (http://w1.262.telia.com/~u26205642/ratsgigs2.htm) and got to thinking about the good times I had at "The Grand Wazoo" in Pretoria - the Rats played there on April 25 and May 16, 1979... and I was at both shows.
Suitably inspired, on my last trip back to SA in January, I dug out a whole stash of my Grand Wazoo memorabilia, and wrote up my recollections of the place. You may be especially interested in the "Tickets" link, which covers 45 gigs at The Grand Wazoo over a two-year period. Where are some of those interesting acts now... and who were they??
One memory of the Rats at the Wazoo on April 25, 1979 was hanging out with them in the basement parking in the Kingsley Centre. For some reason they were unable to leave the parking, and I had the same problem... it may have been a money issue!! Nevertheless, my friend Peter and I got speaking with Jonathan Handley, Dave Davies, Herbie Parkin & Bubbles Steventon, shared a few drinks with them at their van, and got a couple of great autographed album sleeves of "Into the Night We Slide". I still have them - in pristine condition!! Goooooood memories of a great era!! Pity about the politics of the day though, but that's a separate discussion!
Hope you find my stuff interesting! Just another tile to add to the interesting mosaic of SA music. Asylum Kids and Dog Detachment still rule!! BTW, when is the latter being released on CD?? I used to work with the Armstrong brothers at CSIR in Pretoria... wonder where they are now??

JAMMING WITH JESSE JORDAN
Saturday night saw the Jam hosting the belated launch of Jesse Jordan's CD 'Lately When She Cries', which was actually released late last year. Jesse's (and his bands) performance was superb, though they chose to perform mainly crowd-pleasing covers. Live, Offspring, Lenny Kravitz and Matchbox 20 songs flowed freely, interspered with 2 or 3 Jesse originals. I didn't hear 'Eastern Bridge' which is a pity as this was Jesse's winning entry for the Shell Road To Fame competition a year or so ago. The set closer was a great version of Lenny Kravitz's take on the Guess Who's US #1 smash 'American Woman'. I wonder how many of the audience knew they were singing along to a song from 1970. The encore, after much enthusiastic shouting from the crowd, was a powerful version of Creed's song from the "Titan AE" movie, 'Higher'.

BILLYGOAT & DELTA BLUE
It must have been the ongoing foot and mouth problem in England that kept people away from seeing Billygoat tonight as there was a mere sprinkling of people on the dance floor. However those that sprinkled did so to some fine rock and blistering blues.
Looking vaguely like Freddie Mercury, Parri, the lead singer for Billygoat, seemed at ease on stage, at times showing hints of the showmanship that made his look-a-like so famous, but stopping well short of parading around on stage in a pair of shorts.
Ably backed by some thundering bass, slick guitar work and pounding drums, he lead us through some heated rock, smouldering blues and a touch of Red Indian tinged country rock. An impressive set from a band who are surely destined for bigger and better things.
However, Billygoat were merely the lighting of the blues touch paper as they were quickly followed by Delta Blue on stage. Lead singer Gerald Clarke had borrowed Dave Ornellas' (from Hawk) haircut for the evening, but this wild (Shepherd's?) bush of red hair did little to detract from the hardcore blues that pulsated from the stage. Close your eyes and you're in some smokey joint somewhere in the deep south near the Mississippi Delta circa 1940. Open then and you're in a smokey Walkabout watching some ou's from the deep south circa 2000. A highly charged set, nicely rounded off with a blistering version of "Johnny B Goode" that made Chuck Berry's (original) version sound like a Spice Girl cover.
Despite the inaptitude of the sound engineer (which did detract slightly from the talent on show) and the poor attendance (although there were some non South Africans in the audience who responded positively), judging by those around me and the knowing smile on my own face, we had a blast.

E-mails in HTML format, or e-mails all in lower-case or all in CAPITALS will tend to be ignored as they can take too long to correct for inclusion in the Digest.
Any e-mail with an ".exe" file attached will automatically be trashed.
Bulk mailings which show everybody's addresses also tend to get trashed automatically. Just use the "bcc" (blind carbon copy) function on your e-mail programme.
