3RD EAR MUSIC
http://www.3rdearmusic.com
Thought you might like to know that the 3rd (& final) part of Rian Malan's Rolling Stone expose - "Mbube - The Lion Sleeps Tonight" - is on the site this month - http://www.3rdearmusic.com/forum/mbube2b.html Parts 1 & 2 are also up there if you missed them.
There's also a chapter on Roger Lucey from Ex-Security Policeman W/O Paul Erasmus - Foot Soldier For Apartheid. A sad & difficult if fascinating book (un-published). http://www.3rdearmusic.com/forum/footsoldier.html
Extract from "Footsoldier For Apartheid":
By now I had become, and still remain, a fan of Roger Lucey. I still listen to his music and (even at the time I began to) feel bad about the whole thing. What a waste of talent! I really believe that he would have gone onto great heights in the music scene. But, well he was just another 'red' that had to be stopped, by whatever means possible!
Other interesting new projects & some good old news to ponder over, include: The Danish hosted FREEMUSE (Music against censorship) seminar held in Johannesburg in March; How Hitler handled Jazz Music in the 1930's - this will strike an old chord or two http://www.3rdearmusic.com/forum/takeback.html
Rick Andrew has a book coming out - Buried in The Sky - a conscripts Army in the 70's - fighting an unknown war on the border & inside - black rock music & white guilt; Greig Coetzee's new play Seeing Red - Pietermaritzburg students & action on Campus in the 80's - the whole jorl or nothing but the jorl - confusion in between the bullets, the booze & the boys in the band? There's a lot of other stuff too. Check it out http://www.3rdearmusic.com

SA "NEW BAND" SPOTLIGHT ON - NATURAL BORN SWINGERS
Natasha Joseph
At the forefront of Port Elizabeth's emerging music scene are four self-proclaimed "purveyors of post modern rock", the Natural Born Swingers. Their sound has been described as "dark, yet sexy... fusing a number of styles including groove, pop and rock". They're a band with a mission: to "make a little noise - inhale the smog and exhale music".
The Swingers formed in August 1999 and played their first gig a month later. Their rock 'n roll career was launched with the immortal words "OK guys, I'M NOT KIDDING, it's half an hour before the gig - here's a list, now PICK A F*CKING NAME!"
At a time when many young musicians are guilty of apathy and non- professionalism, the Swingers pride themselves on organization, a tightly-monitored practice schedule and responsibility for their own gigs.
At the end of 1999, the Swingers - self-confessed travel addicts - undertook a tour of the Garden Route. They played to "warm receptions" in Knysna and the Wilderness, disliked George (it disliked them right back) and met South Africa's politest bouncers at the Purple Turtle in Cape Town. After a well-received turn on Splashy Fen 2000's Blunt stage, two of the Swingers took a step away from music and went their own ways. A lot of reshuffling and some fierce dedication to the music scene saw the Swingers reborn as a solid, exciting unit.
Currently based in Port Elizabeth, the Swingers have a strong following in their hometown and are greeted with open arms all over the Eastern Cape. They're closely aligned with Grahamstown's Rhodes Music Radio (RMR) and headlined RMR's birthday bash at the Rhodes Student Union last year. Regulars on the Port Elizabeth live music scene, they've been responsible for all sorts of musical high-jinks, including a "porno cheese party" - someone arrived wearing clingwrap and tinfoil - and the recent Friday the 13th party at PE's Lizard Lounge.
Splashy Fen 2001 welcomed the Swingers back in style, with a stunning half-hour set on the Marquee Stage. They've just laid down a demo at the University of Port Elizabeth's studios, so look out for this band to hit the airwaves with a vengeance. They're a young band, but - buoyed by the soaring, searing vocals of Trelanee Skein - they're a band on the move.
Bands line-up:
Trelanee Skein - voice, peacemaker and occasional feminist (in a nice way, she insists).
Caleb Eastwood - guitar, organizer and all-round music addict. He's got the biggest smile in PE and musical genius to match.
Darren Udemans - bass, vegetable-munching good guy. Kind to small furry animals and other band members.
Fraser Greenaway - drummer, whirling dervish. Comes fully equipped with naughty grin and alarming reserves of energy.

THE MOON IS A SPOON - SUNWAYS (Fresh, Freshcd 122)
Consisting of members Robbie Boake, Sarah Hills and drummer Jason
Horseman, Sunways are by no means a brand new band. Formed a couple of years ago by Boake when he left hard rockers Squeal, Sunways released the mildly successful 'Venus in her eyes' song {A live version appeared on the 'The Best Of 5FM TDK Music Explosion Vol.1' CD - ed}. They were then very quiet for a while until the release of their new single 'Style'.
Their debut album 'The Moon is a Spoon' is a well-produced, good looking package which also contains the video to 'Colour Me In' in CD-ROM format. The songs, all penned by Boake or Boake and Hills, are a collection of some of their best material. A very laid back album, 'The Moon is a Spoon' contains the single 'Style', currently doing the rounds on our airways. Boake has a very dreamy sort of voice which reminds me of James Iha (guitarist from the Smashing Pumpkins) on the few occasions that he sang. A bit of the Dave Birch from Squeal bark also seems to have rubbed off on certain songs.
A highlight on the album is definitely the song 'Colour Me In'. A short, powerful, melodic burst of talent that'll be a hit for sure if released as a single. {1 minute 50 seconds of glam smash and trash, Joey Ramone would have been proud - ed}
All-in-all a great, mellow album with some really melodic guitar work. My only real criticism would have to be that the vocals seem a bit
transparent or soft in some places. Sunways are good and I would recommend checking them out on their upcoming countrywide tour.

DREAMLAND - EDI NIEDERLANDER
After laying low for the whole of the 90s, Edi Niederlander is back with her long-awaited third album. And who but Edi could start her fresh new collection with a zippy little tune called Bye Bye? But thats just the first of many surprises on Dreamland, a welcome return (to form) for one of South Africas most respected and enduring artists. Edis first two albums - Ancient Dust (1985) and Hear No Evil (1989) - are well known, admired, and a little rare, especially on CD. Dreamland finds Edi drawing deep on the styles and spirit of those albums, and effortlessly fusing them with the sounds of this new century. The result is a joyful, jazz-flecked and diverse collection of Niederlander originals and a compelling, eclectic and consistently entertaining piece of work.
Producer Koos Turenhout built Dreamland around Edis distinctive guitar expertise, strong songs and versatile vocals (and he also contributed the odd keyboard solo and tabla loop!). But Dreamland is essentially a wonderful group effort from the musicians with whom Edi chose to surround herself. Kevin Gibson (drums) and Nelson Barbosa (bass) underpin every song with energy and verve, Matthew McKeon adds some lovely keyboard touches, and Karen Rutter displays some wondrous flute skills on Bye Bye and Love Is The Dream Of The Soul, and drums on Axis Mundi. On instrumentals like Spider Spins Again and Funka Munka, and the semi-rap workouts that are Love Is The Dream Of The Soul and Marathon Head, these musicians are given full license and plenty of room to flex their skills around Edis guitar sparks, giving Dreamland a spacious, cathartic feel.
Its not all strident and sterk stuff though. Certain of these songs - Strong Women In Africa, Axis Mundi (new age Baez), and the Hippie-clappie closer Shine A Little Love - do tend towards that twee, earnest 70s SA folksy style and are only saved by Edi Nederlanders obvious sincerity and focus of purpose. In Strong Woman in Africa ('We will make Africa strong') she also asks "Where is our story?"; and in Didnt Mean To Break Your Heart Edi crosses her fingers as she promises: "Ill buy you whiskey, Ill buy you rubies, Ill take you to heaven, Ill take you to movies".
But listen to the bright and shiny Undying Light, which features Edi solo on guitar and vocals recalling the optimism and clarity of Ancient Dust', and it all starts to make sense. Its a song that one could imagine an awe-struck, outer space-bound Jodie Foster singing in the "musical version" of Contact. Shine A Little Love is an optimistic, end-of-album knees-up, followed by a "hidden" afri-trip-hoppy coda to round things off. On Marathon Head Edi sings "Take me from this mental race, save my soul from cyberspace". Its obvious she still hankers after the old musical ways and styles, but Dreamland confirms that Edi Niederlander can still make music that is relevant and contemporary. (8) (SS)

4. CLASSIC ROCK
----------------
SHILOH'S CORNER
THE (YOUNG) RASCALS
Picture the scene. The year is 1964, and the twist craze had just hit America. A smokey cocktail venue in downtown New York called the Peppermint Lounge, where Joey Dee and the Starlighters were performing. Still in their teens this young foursome comprised of Eddy Brigati (vocals and percussion), Gene Cornish (guitar), and jazz drummer Dino Danelli. The group was headed by an outstanding keyboard player called Felix Cavaliere who had just left the Escorts that ironically also included Neil Diamond. Promoter/manager Sid Bernstein signed a contract with Atlantic records for the group and labelled them as the Young Rascals due to their age and naïve mannerisms. At that stage they were a show band, but during the latter half of the sixties, recycled their energy into a powerful combination of soul and R&B which mellowed out in the early seventies.
Their claim to fame was in August 1965 when they supported the Beatles at their final live concert at the Shea stadium. Their second hit "Good Loving" reached the number one spot in 1966 and the future of this white soul band was laid out by Atlantic with a collective group of soul melodies that would capture the black and white audience of America. According to Atlantic liner notes they are reputed to have been the first all-white group to play at the Apollo, yet historic evidence tells us that the Crickets nipped them in the bud. Further evidence and research shows that Dale Hawkins preceded this event, nevertheless the Rascals proceeded on a musical journey based more on texture and arrangement than compositional creativity.
It would be of interest to note that it was the Young Rascals, not Wilson Pickett, who first discovered and recorded two obscure soul songs, namely "Mustang Sally" and "Land of a Thousand Dances". "Not to take anything away from Wilson Picket", says Cavaliere, "but Atlantic copped those from us and gave them to him. He did them a little faster, but the seeds from those ideas he heard from our band at the Apollo."
Strongly influenced by Ray Charles, the group decided to opt for Felix's Hammond B3 as the leading musical component other than guitar. The Young Rascals sported the look of Lord Fauntleroy, a gimmick that was quite marketable when one considers that Paul Revere and the Raiders had a similar appearance in costumes of the American war of independence. The summer of love smiled upon the Young Rascals as their hit "Groovin" hit number one on the charts.
The Rascals dropped the "Young" and exchanged their peeked caps for Nehru shirts, beards and beads. Ye old flower power rose its poetic head and Dino changed record labels to Columbia and recruited guitarist Buzzy Feinten to augment the new sound. During the assassination of Robert Kennedy, Cavaliere was devastated due to the fact that the Rascals had been involved with the Kennedy election campaign. Felix wrote a track called "A Ray of Hope" for Ted Kennedy and was invited to a family function where he was personally thanked by Ted.
One of the greatest albums ever to be released by the Rascals was a power-driven album combining fuzz-based lead guitar and power keyboards called "See" (a US#27 in 1969), which contained their last single, the gospel flavoured "Carry Me back". The group disbanded in 1972 and Felix went on to do production for Laura Nyro and released a number of solo albums.

USA FOR AFRICA
Texas-based Kurt Shoemaker gives his unique views on SA music
MASS HYSTERIA - NOT THE MIDNIGHT MASS
I apologize to Not the Midnight Mass if they expect me to take their music seriously, it's too much fun for that. About half of the CD is witty and meant to be light-hearted, but there are some touching and serious songs here. In fact, to judge by the range of material, both serious and funny, I would be surprised if this CD was not a mirror of a Not the Midnight Mass gig.
On 'Mass Hysteria' there are sober-minded songs, Meaningful and Significant songs, but overall, this CD is just too much fun to stay serious. Fun does not exclude high purpose in discussing social issues, or personal ones either, so some of those songs are here.
Here in Texas, I've enjoyed a cappella groups at the Kerrville Folk
Festival, an eclectic festival that appears to have similarities to Splashy Fen. The a cappella groups I've seen perform seem composed of people who can't stay serious long, and Not the Midnight Mass reinforces this observation. Not all intelligent people have a sense of humor, but, I think, a certain amount of intelligence is necessary for wit above the pratfall sort -- and Not the Midnight Mass have intelligence, wit, and style.
One can feel a range of emotions by listening to this album. It has social commentary, a warm love song, good dance feelings, moral outrage, political anger, spoofy laughter, sadness, and ribald humor.
Among the final five songs is a devastating version of John Lennon's
'Working Class Hero'. It would be a powerful song even if sung by the
Drakensberg Boys Choir, but Not the Midnight Mass's version rivals John's own take for strength, irony, message and sneer.
An outrageous song is their version of Zeppelin's 'Whole Lotta Love' -- genius, Albert, genius! The penultimate track is one so true, honest, poignant and bittersweet that it hurts me, both a parent and a child, to hear it. Yet I always listen to 'On Children' when its turn comes around. The CD's last track is, in true showbiz style, designed to "Leave 'em laughing": 'All Around My (Tw)hat' is a classic-sounding round, a spoof on an ancient lay.
Dear Not the Midnight Mass: I'd love to see y'all perform, and the Kerrville Folk Festival goes on not far down the road from here....

JOHN SAMSON
London-based John Samson gives his own twist on SA music
éVOID (1993 tape sold at gigs)
Hands up who enjoyed the extra tracks on the recent Retro Fresh re-release of the seminal debut of éVoid. What do you mean you haven't bought it yet? Ed, please escort that person off the mailing list (and onto the nearest One World website <http://www.oneworld.co.za>).
With the exception of the alternate take of "I am a Fadget", the rest of the bonus tracks seemed to have been culled from a tape that éVoid were selling at their gigs when I saw them at the Springbok Bar in 1993. So (except for the person evicted in the previous paragraph) you should now have heard the alternate take of "Shadows", the highly jive-able to "Jiving to the Weekend Beat", the haunting, searching and thoughtful "Race of Tan" with its "Invisible Sun" by the Police intro, and the bittersweet tale of love in the Townships in "Jeremiah & Josephine"
My guess is that these recordings are going to raided again for the bonus tracks on the re-release of the often overlooked yet highly creditable second album "Here Comes the Rot". So what can we (and here I am including 1st paragraph person on the assumption that they have learnt their lesson) look forward to apart from the exceptional "Rot"?
Opening the tape is "Shoes" which sounds like "Shadows" would have sounded like if it hadn't been so deliciously dramatic. It is an upbeat jive tune that would have had the Springbok Bar bouncing. "Language of Love" and "Ordinary Life" have a sadness about them but is kept from being depressing by a gently lilting beat.
"Ikologi" works on two levels, one as a straight forward Green song
expressing concerns for the planet, but looking beyond the obvious, is a cleverly worded song about the ecology of the human spirit especially in relation to apartheid and posed the question "What do we do when the river runs dry?". Fortunately the floods came before the river ran dry.
"(Sing a Song) of Children Gone" despite it's subject matter is a lively tune as is "Civil Servant" and "Mix it Up" which all borrow heavily from township sounds and will keep the Fadgets happy.
The album ends with "Round and Round" an achingly beautiful song which sums up the generally introspective tone of the album. Like "Rot", the energy and rawness of the debut album is gone but is replaced by a mature sound and the most politically astute lyrics to date.
Two weeks ago we celebrated seven years of Freedom in South Africa. In those seven years we have seen many exiles return to the country they love. Maybe it's time that the Windrich exiles made a return visit to the country that judging by the sounds and words on this album, they never stopped loving. However, if they don't ever have a comeback tour we at least will have the re-releases to keep us company.
Lastly by way of note, I don't know where you can lay your hands on a copy of this tape as I have never seen it anywhere else since that gig in 1993 so don't bombard me with emails asking, but as mentioned above, most of these tracks should be available with the re-release of "Here comes the Rot".

MORE COLD FACTS
http://www.sarockdigest.com/rodriguez
Each week we will post some cold facts about Rodriguez here on the Digest. Rodriguez is not a South African (he was born and bred in Detroit), but he is very well-known in SA (and Australia) and unbelievely unheard-of anywhere else.
"The turn-key comes, his face a grin
Locks the cell I'm in again"
I am an Indigenous Australian and have been listening to Rodriguez since I discovered a tape in 1982. I can relate to his lyrics very
much and as I grew up, I grew to understand more and hear more in his songs. I love Dylan and The Blues and this music slotted in the middle so nicely. I wish he would have kept on composing songs. I have been in prison and this man is huge in Australian prisons (with the crims that is) particuly with us Aboriginal inmates.
The song I like best (if I had to choose) is "Establishment Blues" and I noticed on your lyric page for this song that there is a line missing. It is almost at the end of the song and I think is goes, "can you pass the ??? test". I've always wondered about this and what it means.
Jimi Haynes
mailto:nyamalmedia@netscape.net
{"Can you pass the Rorschach test?" Well-spotted mate... this line isn't printed on any of the lyrics sheets I have! "Rorschach test" is that ink-blot test that psychiatrists use... never done one, but seen it in the movies often enough. Visit http://www.rorschach.org for more info - ed}

SOUTH AFRICAN SLANG
Struggling to understand South African culture and slang are you? Then this website is just for you. Visit: http://www.supertubes.co.za/bot_bar/surfrikan/slang_intro.html
The focus is mainly on SA surfer slang, but most of it has also entered the linguistic mainstream, so this site serves as a general guide. Full info on pronunciation, expression and appropriate usage is provided.
Not for the faint-of-heart or politically correct, though... you have been warned.
Example:
Dagga ('Dag-gah')
(Marijuana, dope) The South African word for dope.
'G' is the Germanic 'g' sound, as if about to spit. As the Americans would say: "hawking a loogie".
Listen to Wonderboom's 'No Left Turn Unstoned' off 'Isit?' to hear "dagga" pronouced correctly.
OK, while we're at it...
Isit? (Izzit?)
This conversational word is used widely and in response to just about anything. Derived perhaps from the English way of saying "Is it really?" If you don't feel like participating in a conversation with a dik ou at a braai, but don't wish to appear rude, just say "Isit" at appropriate gaps in his description of how he decapitated a Kudu with his bare hands.
We will be featuring more choice examples from this list in future Digest issues with the kind permssion of Spike, editor of Wavescape http://www.wavescape.co.za

SATURDAY WIRED
Michelle Constant played an 'acoustic-rock outfit' (Sat 5th May on SAFM) who were apparently that week's most downloaded MP3 South African act. {Not many MP3 download sites to choose from nowadays, as both http://www.digitalcupboard.co.za and http://www.friedjam.co.za are down and have been for quite a while - ed}. Forgot the name but you may know who it is. I think they're from Cape Town and I was wanting to get a CD. Hope you can help. Thanks.

6.LIVE REVIEWS AND GIG INFO

ROCKING AND POPPING AT THE JAM
Friday night (11 May) saw a double bill of Flow and Semisane at the Jam in Cape Town. Flow are a new name to me (no relation to Even Flow, except maybe in rock attitude), but I would love to hear more from this rock band. Think U2 meets Creed with some Bon Jovi-type vocals. Stunning stuff, especially their closing number.
Semisane have just grown and grown and are destined for bigger and better things (like the Westlife support this coming Friday in Cape Town). Tikara was bouncing around the stage, obviously enjoying herself, as was the Jam crowd. I had to leave early, so I did'nt get to see the whole gig, but if it was anything like the Independent Armchair Theatre show from a few weeks ago, then everybody went home well satisfied. (BC)

BOERS, BLUES EN BROERS
Walkabout, London, 7th May
The "curtain" at the Walkabout tonight was a huge screen showing Sky Sports, Ipswich v Man City to be precise. As the curtain went up (and Man City went down) the band were milling around the stage still fiddling with their equipment. In the centre, the lanky figure of the Die Mystic Boer.
The first set started off in a really laid back bluesey way, but soon moved from Valium Swart to Valiant Swart with some great full on blues. For a couple of numbers, he donned a harmonica and was to all intents and purposes, South Africa's very own Bob Doellyn, with some meaningful lyrics, delivered in a tuneful folk rock style.
Good also to see South African music supporting South African music as all the members of Dorp and some of their fanbase were spotted mingling in the crowd.
At half time, the Valiant was abandoned at the side of the road in favour of a Formula 1 Ferrari as we went into overdrive with a full on rock set. Thanks in particular to some fantastic guitar work from Blues Broer Albert Frost, Die Mystic Boer and his band took the Walkabout (soon to be renamed Die Rondloop Kroeg if this trend continues) by the scruff of it's neck and soundly shook it to it's core. A blast if ever there was one.

VENESSA NOLAN IN OBS
It was a dark and Stormers night when Venessa Nolan brought her band and songs to a Cape Town stage for the first time. Luckily she chose the Independent Armchair Theatre in Observatory, as its a warm and cosy venue, bringing back memories of the lounge in that big house on the corner where they used to pull all the couches together to show (banned) movies with a projector and sheet for a screen. There were plenty of family and friends among the new fans in the full venue when Venessa kicked off the first of two sets with I Confess, the opening track on her short, sharp and sweet Burn debut album. That impressive 10-song collection is a slim-lined 35 minutes, but here all the songs were given slighty elongated arrangements, and a handful of new songs were introduced. These included the dazzling My Favourite Time Of Day, which was saved as the only encore song (a very confident move!)
The songs on Burn are already well known from radio play and decent CD sales, and most of them got appreciative roars and applause during their opening bars. Venessa slipped quickly into a relaxed and focused groove with her band - Carl Treunich (solid drums), Dave Adamson (Coldplay T-shirt and dour expression on bass), Yolande Carstens (sphinx-like on keyboards and backing vocals) and Bruce Muzik (Ziggy-zagging guitarist). Seated up front at her keyboards , Venessa conducted them, applauded them and led them through powerful and emotional versions of songs like Glorious Gem, Emptiness High, Haunted, hit single Fragile, and even the moving "existential despair" of Why.
This was all despite a sound system that buzzed, distorted and blustered (slack job Gavin!), and a brief interruption when a strolling punter knocked a stack of speakers into the front row (no injuries). But Venessa Nolan, looking like a young Wendy Oldfield (but sounding like a young Venessa Nolan!!), handled it all with genuine appreciation and obvious enjoyment. She needs a bigger venue and a far better sound system, but that will come. For now and for all those there, it was a thrill-filled two hours in the company of an important new SA talent. (SS)
