Benjy says...
Hail fellow rock fans,
There seems to be almost as many ROA Budgie fans as there are for the Sabs, Purple, Jethro Tull or Thin Lizzy!! ... Thanks for your emails and calls suggesting tracks for the Budgie special. In my opinion they were one of the best 'heavy' or hard rock bands of the early 70's that sadly were not given their due recognition. Perhaps that was because they didn't really have a 'star' front man like Phil Lynott, Geddy Lee or Glenn Hughes ... or maybe it was just that there were so many great bands around at the time and they got 'lost' so to speak ... what do you think? Email me at rockofages@icon.co.za. Anyhow I dare any true rocker not to jump up and down when the riff for "Breadfan" or "In for the kill " kicks in....
Next week's special will be one of the longest running current classic rock bands...Canada's mighty RUSH.
Rush
The progressive rock trio RUSH released their first album in 1974. Shortly thereafter, Alex Lifeson (guitars) and Geddy Lee (bass, vocals and keyboards) were joined by percussionist Neil Peart, who soon became RUSH's primary lyricist. After over 30 years together the band has released a total of 18 studio albums as well as numerous live and compilation albums. For detailed information on the band visit their amazing website at www.rush.com. Joining me in the studio on Thursday for the Rush special will be Martin Myers, who is just about the biggest Rush fan I know.
Rock of Ages's recommendations
Harvest Festival
Along with Island Records, Vertigo, Deram and Virgin, Harvest Records was one of the leading labels in progressive and heavy rock throughout the 70's. As an imprint label of EMI Records the label was responsible for introducing the musical wonders of such obscure artists like Kevin Ayers, Michael Chapman, Roy Harper and the Third Ear Band alongside such luminaries as Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Greatest Show on Earth, Edgar Broughton Band, Babe Ruth and the Climax Chicago Blues Band.
I have just acquired the "Harvest Festival" 5 CD box set covering this legendary label's output from 1969 to 1979 ..... 97 tracks in total from all the artists mentioned above PLUS The Pretty Things, Syd Barrett, Barclay James Harvest, The Move and many, many more. It is housed in a large coffee table book style with a 120 page, full colour libretto and is the best CD package I have ever come across and is highly recommended for Rock of Ages fans who want an early Xmas/birthday present. Richard Filmer from CDW is trying to source some copies of this amazing box set so get your orders in now (Richard's details below).

News from the World of Rock |
GNR April
Live Nation/Clear Channel reports that Guns N' Roses will release the long awaited Chinese Democracy album next month. The report however does not specify where this information came from. This news comes after weeks of speculation about the imminent release of the album after several tracks leaked and Axl Rose playing the CD for several people. However, nothing official has been announced as of yet but the band are set to play several festivals in Europe this summer.
AntiMusic's 'dolemint' offered up a review of the leaked tracks a couple weeks ago. Here is part of what he had to say about the track "Better": This is the third leak, and this song simply puts a smile on my face. It has chart-topper written all over it, but without selling out to today's scene. There's very few songs that I thoroughly enjoy on my first listen, but "Better" can be added to that short list. It's a definite hard rocker that includes a head-bangable bridge with a slight industrial edge, but without Axl sounding like a poseur. With "Better," Axl's shaping a style of current music instead of copying it. Hooks, melody, and the GN'R vibe. Thumbs way the hell up on this demo.
Cat Returns
YUSUF ISLAM, the artist formerly known as CAT STEVENS, has recorded his first pop album since 1978. The MORNING HAS BROKEN singer, who converted to Islam in the late 1970s and turned his back on his music career, has yet to decide whether he'll release his new material as Cat Stevens or Yusuf Islam. He has also yet to decide when the new material will be released, but he has three unnamed record labels fighting for the rights.
Roxy Music reunite
Roxy Music are working on their first album of new material with their original line-up for more than 30 years. The band released Avalon in 1982 but this will be the first to feature Brian Eno since 1973. All five original members of the group, Bryan Ferry, Andy MacKay, Phil Manzanera, Paul Thompson and Eno are involved
Van Halen RIP
Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony was interviewed recently on the current status of Van Halen: "Well never say never but we're currently in a state of limbo. After the reunion tour ended so abruptly we all went into our own corners and truthfully Ed doesn't want to tour right now or maybe ever again. I don't know what he's thinking at this point. So I would say that we're on a temporary hiatus that possibly could become permanent, you never know. With that said I realize that's not much of an answer but that's really where things are right now and tomorrow it could all change again."

Benjy Mudie was inducted into the South African Rock Hall Of Fame on 14th August 2002. Of Scottish origin, Mudie started out in the music industry working in record shops. He later became the A&R man for WEA records, signing such luminaries as Lesley Rae Dowling, Baxtop and Falling Mirror. He has ventured briefly into the realms of songwriting, getting co-writing credit for Little Sister's song 'You Got My Heart', but it is mainly for his running of record labels, notably Tusk and more recently Fresh and Retro Fresh that he is honoured. With these labels he has tirelessly dedicated himself to putting South African music out there, showing an unshaking belief in the quality of SA music.
