Fellow rock fans,

I hope you enjoyed the wildy schizophrenic show on Thursday, I reckon there was something for all tastes: from the new 'retro' riffs of The Tea Party, Porcupine Tree, Spock's Beard; the brass rock musings of Chicago Transit Authority, Blood, Sweat & Tears, The Electric Flag; pre-punk Detroit swagger from The Stooges, MC5 and the Amboy Dukes; prog leanings from Beggars Opera and Focus to the blues drenched fields of Savoy Brown, Joe Bonamassa and tons of classic rock from Deep Purple, Nazareth, Grand Funk, Spooky Tooth and the like ... Plus of course our 45 minute special on Rock's golden god, Robert Plant. Next week's special we will be honouring the Kings of 12 bar, heads down boogie Status Quo who will be cooking up a storm at Carnival City next weekend. Tune in for all the Quo classics plus tracks from their new album "The party ain't over yet" ... all things being what they are we are hoping to catch up with Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt for an interview plus a 'face to face' with Jack Hammer's Piet Botha.

Rock of Ages's recommendations

Some great new albums gracing the rock nation this week: First off is the brand new Rolling Stones album, whilst it's true that the last few albums from rock's greatest survivors have failed to ignite the faithful and in many cases sounded like they were going through the motions, the same cannot be said about "A bigger bang" ... what a return to form! It's back to the roots for Jagger and Co as they rip (and roll) through some of their strongest material for 2 decades, Ron and Keef's guitars snarl like rabid dogs whilst the perennially youthful Charlie Watts slams the backbeats as if his life depends on it ... and Mick? Well he sounds like the Jagger of "Exile on Main Street" and "Sticky Fingers", all attitude and sass ... do yourself a favour and turn it up ... really loud, you'll hear what I mean ......... For all guitar-philes a must-have album is the "Les Paul and Friends" - American made, World played" tribute ... How's this line-up: Kenny Wayne Shepherd with Edgar Winter, Sting teaming up with Joss Stone, Buddy Guy trading licks with Keef, Eric Clapton duetting with the legendary Sam Cooke who in turn scorches the air with Jeff Beck; Joe Perry wailing behind Mick Hucknall (they should do a rock album together!). Add in the likes of Richie Sambora, Billy Gibbons, Steve Miller, Peter Frampton and the man himself, Les Paul (the Father of the electric guitar and multi tracking recording) and you have one of the most exciting rock albums of the year. The highlight, for me, is the riveting collaboration between Santana/Journey axe man Neal Schon and the amazing blues rock wailer Beth Hart on probably what is one of the finest blues tracks ever heard, "I wanna know you" ........ Finally if there is one band that has earned the right to be HUGE (but sadly are not) it is Canada's The Tea Party. Coming on like a 'Kashmir'-era Led Zeppelin dipped in liquid adrenaline the new album "Seven circles" absolutely rocks and is one of the most played records on my iPod ... they have around 8 albums out, do yourself a favour and check them out on the Net.

Benjy Mudie
Then	Now

Benjy Mudie was inducted into the South African Rock Hall Of Fame on 14th August 2002. Of Scottish origin, Mudie started out in the music industry working in record shops. He later became the A&R man for WEA records, signing such luminaries as Lesley Rae Dowling, Baxtop and Falling Mirror. He has ventured briefly into the realms of songwriting, getting co-writing credit for Little Sister's song 'You Got My Heart', but it is mainly for his running of record labels, notably Tusk and more recently Fresh and Retro Fresh that he is honoured. With these labels he has tirelessly dedicated himself to putting South African music out there, showing an unshaking belief in the quality of SA music.
