Sanele Sobantwana

I was born in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape in January 1977. All my schooling took place there and in 1995 I matriculated from the Mqikela High School.
I come from a very humble background and family circumstance, but I was able to commence Social Work studies through UNISA in 1996. Between 1997 and 1999 I transferred my studies to Wits University, but I was ultimately forced to cut this short due to my own financial circumstance, since I was responsible for funding my own higher education.
In 2000, I was fortunate to join FAMSA, West Rand as an Auxiliary Social Worker, but I have to admit that I found social work stressful given the poverty and other societal issues in the country. I decided to seek my fortune elsewhere, whilst retaining a very keen interest in philanthropic matters.
My big break came when in 2004 I became indentured to 1485am Radio Today. Having completed the six-month course offered by the station, I found myself as a competent Sound Controller and Producer. I then joined the staff of the station full-time as a controller.
My career with 1485am Radio Today has been very challenging, rewarding, educational and motivational. All of which has resulted in me being appointed the Station Manager of 1485am Radio Today in March 2005. I am very pleased to say that additionally in May 2005 I was appointed an executive director of the section 21 company that owns the station. In my current role I am fully responsible for all aspects of the management of the station and it’s outputs. I work very closely with the board and the Chief Executive. I also carry responsibility for public and media relations as well as the ongoing mentorship programme offered to previously disadvantaged individuals.
At the end of 2005 I successfully completed the Rhodes University Sol Plaatjie Institute’s Certificate in Radio Management. Additionally, I also successfully completed the British High Commission sponsored Radio Branding and Marketing course, through the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (SA). I studied strategic radio programming through the Durban Institute of Technology. Also governance and directorship though the Institute of Directors (SA). If plans work out, I will be attending a leadership and management course in Israel in mid-2006. Pending this and my career success it is my intention to study business and management either via the Gordon Institute for Business Science or Wits Business School.
My leisure time activities are varied: I enjoy the arts, music, theatre, and friendship and have learnt to love the bush. I love my garden and pets. I am also responsible as guardian to my young nephew who lives with me. In 2004, I was extremely privileged to be appointed by the British Sovereign as an Esquire to a Knight of Justice in the Order of St John.
I am very motivated by the challenges my new career direction has taken.
