STEVE KIRKER

Steve Kirker has been trying to break into the radio industry since 1993 when he first arrived in Johannesburg from his job as a mine geological technician. "Mining was the pits" says Steve who studied geology for no other reason than he did well in Geography at school and had a more than passing interest in geomorphology. At various stages he had considered acting, singing (please no!), spaceman, fireman and radio DJ as ‘dream' jobs but never considered them realistic. After a couple of years in the mining industry he realised that his sanity(what there was of it) would be severely affected by a career in the mining industry so he packed up and headed for Johannesburg in search of fame and fortune. Now he's lost interest in fame but is still very keen on the fortune!
A 9 year stint presenting the early morning weekend show at 5FM was followed very briefly by some time working a graveyard shift at 702. "I loved the challenge of working in talk radio and learnt a lot but my system couldn't take it anymore" he says of that part of his radio career. Since then Steve presented a show on SAFM on Thursday nights until recently and still dabbles in sport reporting for the station, most notably sailing, which is his big passion in life.
"At Radio Today I have more freedom than I've ever had before, which makes a wonderful change" adds Steve, whose music tastes range from the likes of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Eric Clapton to Green Day, Third Eye Blind and The Finkelstiens. On The Eternal Apprentice's show you will hear all these and much more as Steve continues his quest for Zen and the art of radio presenting, which after 13 years makes him a perennial student of the craft.

Steve is married and has 2 children who have the unfortunate task of trying to live their Dad's Rock and Roll dream. Aimée is a drummer while Timothy plays piano and is turning into an Ace guitarist. Despite having owned a guitar for half his life, Steve's efforts with the ‘mighty axe' are far more suited for a lumber yard than a concert arena. Sadly for the neighbours and family that still hasn't stopped him from trying to emulate his heroes.
Parked in the garden of the family home is the family yacht, also known as the garden gnome. Work in progress to re-fit the boat is progressing at a pace that would embarrass the most lethargic of snails but is something that Steve hopes to have finished before the children leave home. One day Steve dreams of being able to make cruising a reality and it is for this reason that he takes a more than passing interest in the weekly lottery numbers, broken down lorries and unattended hand bags.
Even though he's well past the age when most people have decided on a career path, Steve is still trying to find something to get his teeth into….that is apart from the pizza, Thai food and ice cream that contributes to his middle age spread.
